news Watchdog “satisfied” with contamination approach The state’s environmental watchdog has defended its reaction to the discovery of toxic chemicals in three creeks at Maitland. Heavy rainfall in March reportedly caused per-and-polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) substances to overflow from the now-closed Truegain waste oil factory in Rutherford and subsequently enter Stony, Fishery and Wallis creeks. Two months later, the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) issued precautionary advice after tests showed levels of PFAS up to 22 times the recommended drinking water guideline. PFAS is the same chemical found to be contaminating waterways near the Williamtown RAAF Base. Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison quizzed the state government over the process, claiming the community was not made aware of potential risks. But the EPA’s north branch director, Adam Gilligan, said it went

out with “specific advice” after a “thorough look” at the results. “As soon as the issue arose [in March], we put out a media release to warn people,” he said. “We referred the results off to a statewide PFAS taskforce, they’ve had a thorough look at the issue, and then we went out with specific advice. “We are satisfied that what we’re dealing with is a precautionary one.” Ms Aitchison believed the government had not been “clear and transparent”. “I understand you want to get information correct, but putting out a release and hoping that media outlets pick up on it...is a bit divorced from reality,” she said. The EPA hosted two information sessions in Rutherford last week, while Mr Gilligan said about 85 properties had also been included in a letterbox drop. Among the EPA’s precautionary advice was a warning not to eat

home-slaughtered livestock that had drunk from the waterways. “The key issue raised [at the sessions] was understanding why it’s acceptable for livestock to still be sold into the market,” Mr Gilligan said. “We’ve explained that and people have been generally satisfied.” The EPA stated residents could sell their produce into the market because it was then diluted before consumption. A tender process to manage the former Truegain site, which

had its environment protection licence suspended in 2016, closes today (Thursday 14 June). Ms Aitchison said the site needed to be cleaned up properly. “Two years after Truegain closed the site, it remains a ticking environmental time-bomb for my electorate,” she said. “First, it was the so-called ‘Rutherford Stink’, now farmers downstream are dealing with potential contamination issues.” - Ben Murphy

University’s robots on target for world domination

Australia is set to kick off its FIFA World Cup campaign against France on Saturday, but the Socceroos will need to compete for national attention with a team of teen robots. The squad, dubbed NUbots, will represent Australia at the RoboCup soccer world championships in Montreal, Canada, from 16 to 22 June. Standing at almost one metre tall, the NUbots will contest the teen division of the humanoid league, where autonomous robots with a human-like body and senses verse each other in a game of two, 10-minute halves. University of Newcastle computer engineering student and NUbots team leader, Alex Biddulph, said a NUbot could kick a ball and wave to its fans.

“We’ve programmed the robots to visually locate a ball on the soccer field, navigate a path to it, judge space and distance, and attempt to score a goal,” he said. “Like professional soccer players, NUbots may also be inclined to drop to the ground and throw a tantrum if they miss a shot. “Our NUbots were world champions of the RoboCup in 2006 and 2008, so we’re hoping to reclaim the championship title.” The RoboCup aims to develop a team of fully autonomous, human-like robots that can win against the human world soccer champion team by 2050. But, most importantly, it represents a global launch pad to collaborate artificial intelligence breakthroughs that

could transform the world. Head of the Newcastle Robotics Laboratory, associate professor Stephan Chalup, said the future of artificial intelligence was bright. He added coding created and shared between teams at the RoboCup competition could provide a boost in health and medical imaging, agriculture, facial recognition, transport, and defence. “While assimilating human behaviours so that robots can interpret emotions still presents a challenge in the automation industry, events such as the RoboCup encourages global collaboration, bringing us one step closer to our goal of creating meaningful outcomes for society,” associate professor Chalup said. - Ben Murphy 3

Council marks milestone

Marine rubbish app to launch A new app will encourage people to record rubbish found in local waterways, beaches and seas to make it easier for volunteers to clean up the mess. Hunter Local Land Services has supported Tangaroa Blue Foundation – a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to the removal and prevention of marine debris – ahead of the app’s launch at Black Head Surf Life Saving Club on 19 June. Its timely release comes amid plastic littering the Hunter’s beaches after more than 80 containers fell off a ship near the coast of Newcastle earlier this month. Debris such as car bumper bars, print cartridges, lollies and packaged drinks have washed up at Port Stephens and further north. The new app is linked to the Australian Marine Debris Initiative

(AMDI) – a national database of rubbish collected during beach and river clean ups. Tangaroa Blue Foundation’s Heidi Taylor says it will make a big difference. “The app is going to make our data collection so much easier as volunteers can automatically record GPS data, add photos and even scan the barcode on rubbish so we can track it back to its source,” she says. “The AMDI database helps identify the types and amounts of marine debris impacting specific sites. “We work with community, government, and industry groups to identify sources to find practical solutions to stop marine debris entering our waterways.” The app’s launch will be supported by three short training events for interested volunteers at

Newcastle council has marked a milestone in the construction of its future premises. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes and chief executive Jeremy Bath affixed the city’s seal to a concrete support on the emerging office tower at 12 Stewart Avenue. The new West End building’s construction is expected to be completed in March 2019. “We’re just over a year away from enjoying a modern day headquarters and [this] is a reminder that soon council’s administrative staff will be better equipped to serve ratepayers in the heart of the future CBD,” Cr Nelmes said. Mr Bath earlier claimed the council would save up to $14,000 every year per staff member by moving into the new building.

news Vinnies’ annual sleepout raises funds for homeless With evening temperatures dropping, no-one feels the bitter conditions more than people without a place to call home. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, on census night in 2016 there were 37,715 people facing homelessness in NSW compared to 27,479 five years earlier – a shocking 37% increase. An annual Vinnies CEO Sleepout aims to educate participants about the realities of living life below the poverty line and experiencing homelessness. Since its inception in 2006, the sleepout has raised almost $36.5 million to fund Vinnies’ homeless services across Australia. This year’s local event will take place from 6pm on 21 June until 8am on 22 June at McDonald Jones

Stadium. In the Hunter Region, about 50 business leaders have already raised more than $50,000 for Vinnies’ homeless services, but another $100,000 is the target. Representatives from five Hunter Valley companies are leading the race for the highest fundraisers. A cot, clothes and a baby car seat: everything was ready to go. “Then, when we went home, we had nothing,” Toronto resident Cheryl Leach says. “Instead of flowers of congratulations, we were getting flowers of sympathy.” Ms Leach’s son, Taylor, was stillborn at 32 weeks in 2005. A stillbirth is typically defined as a baby born with no signs of life at, or after, 28 weeks’ gestation. It was Ms Leach’s seventh attempt at In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF), and the experience had a lasting impact. “They did a 10-page autopsy and nothing showed up as to why he passed away,” she says. “My husband and I dealt with it differently – our marriage broke down and we got a divorce because of it. “I was trying to run a dog

Port Stephens’ iconic Tomaree Coastal Walk is set for a $6.7 million upgrade. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said funding would be delivered in the NSW Budget on Tuesday 19 June. The upgrade will link and expand the coastal walk to 23 kilometres, as well as provide whale watching and interpretive facilities. “This means more people not only get to see the beautiful Tomaree coast but also have the opportunity to appreciate the remarkable Aboriginal and World War II history of the area,” Mr MacDonald said. The project will be delivered in stages and is expected to be completed by 2022. It aims to include: improved access, walking tracks, and visitor amenity for Tomaree Headland, as well as new links to establish a coastal walking connection to Birubi Point.

Inquiry into stillbirths in Australia grooming business in Sydney at the time and was suffering from a bad migraine, so I took myself to hospital and was eventually diagnosed with severe depression. “In hospital, and when I got home, no-one wanted to talk to me about my loss [the stillbirth]; it was such a sad and lonely time.” Unfortunately, Ms Leach’s experience is not uncommon. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, 19 children were stillborn in Newcastle and Lake Macquarie in 2016. The Stillbirth Foundation Australia has called on families touched by the issue to raise their voice and make a submission to the Senate’s Select Committee Inquiry. chief executive, Victoria Bowring, says it’s vital for people to discuss their experience if they feel comfortable doing so. “For too long, families have suffered stillbirth in silence, and this inquiry presents the first real opportunity for those families to have their voices heard,” she says. “This, right now, is our best chance to see the federal government take action to properly fund research and education campaigns. “There is nothing more powerful than simply telling your story and communicating the pain that is caused through stillbirth.” The closing date for submissions is Friday 29 June. Bus services to increase

Civic station’s future mapped out An active hub with a light rail stop, near a thriving university, local museum and waterfront destination. That’s the proposed future for Newcastle’s Civic Station precinct, which a state government program claims is at the “geographical heart” of its plans. Revitalising Newcastle director Michael Cassel says the recent lodging of a development application (DA) with Newcastle council is a major milestone for the former station. The DA proposes the retention and reuse of the building to enhance the use of the structure as a great gathering space for the community. “The city is in the middle of significant transformation and we are really excited about revitalising this precinct into an attractive public domain that people will want to stay, play, and really enjoy,” Mr Cassel says. “We are looking to amend the former station to create a café in the heart of the original building, as well as remove parts of the building to open more north/south connections between Hunter Street and the waterfront. “Getting this right is important for the city.” Mr Cassel adds Revitalising Newcastle sought feedback on its plans in late 2016 and, since then, has worked with stakeholders, heritage experts and

landscape architects to deliver “what we believe is in line with what most people wanted”. The DA also proposes the re-interpretation of the former footbridge into the public domain design. “The heritage experts and landscape architects have designed a way to celebrate the heritage of the footbridge, while also allowing the space to better connect the future university areas and the waterfront,” Mr Cassel says. Following DA approval processes, construction could start by the end of the year, with the new public domain opening in the first half of 2019. - Ben Murphy

Additional route 262 and 263 buses from Cameron Park to Charlestown will be rolled out over the next 12 months, the state government has announced. The increased services are part of a $1.5 billion investment throughout NSW, which includes regional and metropolitan bus services, school services, and financing new and replacement buses. “We’ve already added more than 2,300 extra weekly bus services to the Newcastle and Hunter region since 2011,” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said. “Customers using route 262 and 263 from Cameron Park to Charlestown will soon benefit from even more weekly services, giving them greater travel options and improved access to Cardiff Station.” The additional services will be introduced later this year.

cover story Husband, father takes the plunge for MND It’s hard to imagine how anyone finds the strength to carry on after an incurable disease diagnosis, let alone parents of young children. But if anyone can find a silver lining, it’s the Bell family. Four-and-a-half years ago, Matt, Jodie, Mia and Lucy’s lives were changed forever when Jodie was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) – a neurodegenerative condition that causes muscles to progressively weaken and waste. Sufferers slowly lose the ability to walk, talk, breathe and swallow. Jodie was 30 weeks’ pregnant with her youngest daughter, Lucy, when she started to experience pins and needles in her hands. Doctors put it down to carpel tunnel, and told her if the issue didn’t resolve itself by the time Lucy was six weeks’ old, to come back then. When it didn’t subside, Jodie was

sent to a neurologist, who suspected she had multiple sclerosis (MS). She underwent a spate of tests over the next 12 months before she sought a second opinion. On 23 January 2014, Jodie was finally diagnosed with MND, and was told she’d be lucky to have nine months left to live. “We didn’t even know what to say to each other, let alone to family and friends,” Jodie told Newcastle Weekly. “But when you have young kids, life just goes on. “The day after I was diagnosed, I still had a: ‘Mum, what are we doing today?” Jodie said this gave her and Matt the strength to keep going. “Sure, life’s different now, I have a full-time carer and I’m pretty much confined to a wheelchair; but when Matt gets up and goes to work in the morning, I’m still thinking about

school lunches, homework, hats and notes – everything that mums do,” she said. “It’s the new normal for us.” Since her diagnosis, Jodie and Matt have found solace in community organisations that give hope and support to individuals and families affected by the disease, such as MND NSW, Fight MND, and the MND and Me Foundation. They are both passionate advocates of the cause, and grasp every opportunity to give back to those who have helped them, while inspiring other people impacted by MND. So, on Saturday 23 June, Matt will join other community leaders in The Big Freeze Newcastle at No 1 Sportsground. Organised by Fight MND, the fundraiser sees sliders take the plunge into an inflatable pool filled

Maitland council has been asked to extend an invitation for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to visit the city as part of a potential tour of regional NSW. Royal newlyweds, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, are set to visit Sydney in October for the annual Invictus Games. The state government has reportedly been in discussions with Kensington Palace in a bid to organise a tour. Maitland councillor Mitchell Griffin moved a Notice of Motion at council’s meeting this week, urging the city to throw its hat into the ring alongside the likes of Bathurst and Orange. “A royal visit to Maitland would potentially attract thousands of visitors, who would spend money in our city,” the motion read. “It would also provide an opportunity for international media exposure for the [area]. “Maitland is in the perfect

position as a regional player to host this significant event.” The last major royal visit to Maitland occurred in March 1983 when Prince Charles and Princess Diana attended a civic reception at Maitland Town Hall and signed the visitors’ book. The NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet (DPC) Hunter Office advised Maitland council that expressions of interest should be submitted by the end of June.

Communicating with children? We’ve got some useful ideas Q I would really like some advice on how to communicate better with my two children (aged six and nine). I feel I am not listened to, despite my trying to teach them to respect others. I often tell them not to do something - but they seem to do the exact opposite! This is very frustrating as I know they are great kids but they constantly seem to be pushing the boundaries, as if in defiance of me. A Human language is very interesting. When we want our children to stop or change a negative behaviour, it is common to say things like “stop hitting your sister” or “don’t jump on the bed” or “don’t run down the driveway or you will fall”. And what do kids do with such common directions? They often do the opposite of our intended instruction! The language we use in trying to change behaviour can make a big difference in the outcome. It seems perfectly reasonable to use the words “don’t” and “stop” in achieving change. But we as humans (children and adults) are actually driven by what psychologists call “dominant thoughts”. This means that we are primed and ready to act on key words in sentences, whether the instructions are stated in the positive or negative. What this means is that the brain does not particularly care if you say “don’t” or “do” – the brain focuses attention on the words following this and gets ready to act – this is the idea of “priming”. So what does this mean for communicating in every day life? If you would like someone to stop doing something, don’t ask them to stop doing it! You tell them what you would like them to do instead. Let me provide some examples: Instead of saying:

The bolded words are the dominant thoughts, and often the brain is primed to act on these words, and not what you really intended these words to mean. Language is influential and we are constantly using it to for a purpose when communicating with others – to manipulate, influence, to convey positive and negative thoughts. So think about the power of language the next time you want to send a message to your children. You can also apply the ideas of dominant thoughts and priming in many contexts. I’m going to be a bit cheeky here and give you an example of communicating with someone you really hope you don’t need to speak to often (for example an adult). If you say “don’t hesitate to call” the receiving person’s brain may act on the dominant thought which is “hesitate to call”. On the other hand, if you really would like to hear from this person, you would instead say “call me anytime”. Get the idea? Good luck in trying this different way of influencing others!

I’ve been working here for the past year, and before that, I was the head chef at The Kent Hotel in Newcastle, where I was lucky enough to be sponsored by the owner of Hunt Hospitality,

Stephen Hunt, in 2012 to come over from Ireland. I’m originally from England, where I started as a chef after I left school. Q: What is your signature dish? A: Here at the Lakeside, we have varied dishes, from our braised lamb shanks to our slow-cooked barbecue pork ribs. Though our monster schnitzels with multiple toppers and the grilled salmon with cherry tomatoes, prawns, chat potatoes and parmesan salad also stand out. Q: What three ingredients couldn’t you live without? A: This is a tough question, because there’s so many, but for me: chillies, garlic, fresh herbs, along with salt and pepper and many more. Q: What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a chef? A: It can be a tough job with the hours and pressure of the daily running of the kitchen, but putting good food out, working alongside the kitchen and restaurant staff; there’s a great sense of achievement in that, which is very rewarding.

time out Riotous R-rated magic Mike Tyler and Christopher Wayne have nothing to hide. Best known as Australia’s own cheeky duo, The Naked Magicians, Tyler and Wayne are in the midst of a national tour, which makes its way to Wests New Lambton on Saturday 30 June. But this is no ordinary magic show. The Naked Magicians do away with top hats and capes to embrace full-frontal illusions that combine magic and muscles with riotous laughs. “Good magicians don’t need sleeves and great magicians don’t need pants,” Tyler says. “Being on stage doing magic without relying on pockets or sleeves does add that extra challenge,” Wayne adds. Tyler and Wayne had been mates for years before joining forces in 2014. Wayne was the first Australian magician to secure his own TV series, whilst Tyler was

performing at high-end corporate functions. “We wanted to create a different kind of magic show,” Tyler tells Newcastle Weekly. “There were a lot of tricks we enjoyed performing, but we had to reinvent those to perform them with no clothes and no pants. “The show also had to be themed around naughty topics.” Tyler says that, while the R-rated show has evolved over time and shifts ever so slightly to adapt to each audience, most of the core material had stayed the same because it was well received – not only in Australia, but overseas, too. The Naked Magicians have performed in more than 200 cities around the world, including in the USA, Hong Kong and the UK, with an extended run on London’s West End. “Everyone has that naughty, cheeky side to them; some people just have it buried further

Life in the digital age has a sense of permanence. Once you put something on the internet, it exists there forever. There are some decisions in life that are irreversible; a sobering thought, and one that Valentine

author Gabrielle Reid explores in her debut young adult novel, The Things We Can’t Undo. The book explores topics such as social media and sexual assault, at a time when they are at the height of public discussion. It follows the story of Samantha and Dylan, two teens in love. They’ve been together for nearly a year, when, one Saturday night, they leave a party in favour of a quiet bedroom. Malicious rumours soon spread throughout their Sydney private school, and Sam finds herself on the verge of making a decision she can’t take back. As a former high school teacher, Reid has witnessed firsthand the modern-day issues teens face, and wanted to bring these to the surface. “When I had my eldest son [now six years old], it kind of changed

how I thought about [sexual assault]; I was no longer just thinking about how to protect myself and my friends and family, but how I could make sure my son grew up respecting women,” Reid told Newcastle Weekly. Reid started working on the novel in 2015, well before the #MeToo movement gained traction on social media, encouraging sexual abuse and harassment victims to speak out in solidarity. But Reid said this made her

novel even more relevant in a contemporary context. She describes it as a must-read for “every teenage boy who thinks he’s a nice guy”, and “every teenage girl learning to speak her mind”. Spectators will reap the rewards of an annual competition between Lake Macquarie boaties later this month. Hot off the heels of last year’s successful inaugural event, Float Your Boat returns on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 June to wow crowds with a dazzling flotilla of lights. Boat owners will once again drape their vessels in every colour of the rainbow to illuminate the lake, in an effort to scoop one of three awards: People’s Choice, Mayor’s Best Boat (five metres and over), and Mayor’s Best Boat (10 metres and over). Onshore, viewers can watch the boats parade from Marmong Point Marina to Wangi on Friday night, and Marmong Point marina

to Belmont on Saturday night, ensuring both sides of the lake catch a glimpse of the action. The parade will go from 6pm to 8pm both nights. There will also be live sites happening at Toronto foreshore (5.30pm to 8.30pm) and Wangi RSL foreshore (7pm to 9pm) on Friday night, and Warners Bay foreshore from 5pm to 8pm on Saturday night. These will include food stalls,

kids’ activities, live music, fire twirling and workshops. Fireworks will round out the event with a bang at Warners Bay on Saturday night. When it’s dry, it’s dry; but when it rains on the coast, it’s incessant. Time to watch for fungal problems – for example, roses will be smitten with black spot and powdery mildew, which can be treated with copper oxychloride. Shrubs such as gardenias and murrayas can present with yellow growth during winter, which can be attributed to the rain leaching the elements from the soil – particularly iron, which keeps them glossy and green. Correct this problem by applying

Earth worms will return to the garden, but if you are really stressed over those little mounds of dirt, shake around some soap powder, water and froth it up and the worms will return to the garden.

Dave ‘Robbo’ Robertson is a man who loves to move and loves motivating others to get moving as well. As a health professional (physio), Dave is passionate about prescribing physical activity to promote better health. In 2012, this passion led to him setting up Newcastle’s first parkrun event, Newy parkrun, which has helped thousands of locals get moving as they grab their five-kilometre fix each Saturday morning. When he’s not running himself, ‘Robbo’ can often be found at events all around the place with microphone in hand, cheering runners on excitedly as event MC or commentator. He is also often seen supporting a cause, such as the upcoming Big Freeze Newcastle event, which raises money to help fight Motor Neurone Disease. 58

Being pretty mad about sport, I love engaging with a big sporting event. That may mean cheering from a pub, being in the stand for a big match, or being lucky enough to attend a Commonwealth or Olympic Games.
