This week... From the editor I was pleased to hear mental health came out on top in the 2018 federal budget. Lifeline is a vital national crisis service, including here in Newcastle and the Hunter, so it’s reassuring that the government has allocated $33.8 million to the 24-hour helpline, as well as funding for beyondblue and $125 million in additional research. Mental health is not clouded by as big a stigma as it once was, but we still have a way to go. I read an interesting article in the Sydney Morning Herald the other day, that boldly proclaimed it was time to give people the ability to call in sick to work on an “off day”. It discussed changing corporate culture to let employees know it was okay to talk about having “off days” in the same way they took sick days. It’s true, physical illness is rarely questioned, but a bout of anxiety or depression is not so widely accepted as a sound reason to take time off. Perhaps because some people still feel like it’s a taboo topic. In any case, it’s important to look after ourselves first. It’s not selfish, it’s necessary. You can’t pour from an empty cup. If you or someone you know needs help, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14.

news Man on a mission for kids It might be difficult to spot Mark Wattus as he takes his place among more than 100 Variety Bash cars at Newcastle Foreshore this weekend. He will be seated behind the wheel of his camouflaged vehicle and decked out in military gear – a man on a mission. His goal is to raise as much money as possible for Variety – the Children’s Charity. Each year, a raucous parade of adventurers embark on a week-long road trip to schools throughout NSW, bringing donations that provide opportunities for children to reach their full potential. Mr Wattus says it’s a rewarding experience. “We go to some special schools, where the kids – their challenges are something that I’ve never had to face on a daily basis, so it’s all
about what we can do for them,” he says. “I have taken part in three Variety NSW Bashes and my favourite memory was our visit to Wauchope Public School in 2016 when a little guy spoke to us via an electronic device, which we had just donated to the school. “All of us had a tear in our eyes or a lump in our throats; it really showed me why I do the Bash and raise money for these kids. “They are our future and they need our help.” Mr Wattus’ wife will join him on the road for this year’s event. Participants are set to visit Nundle, Glen Innes, Tulloona, Narrabri, Eumungerie, Forbes, Euabalong West, Griffith, Caragabal, Orange, Mullion Creek and Mudgee. The Bashers will then return for

a Family Fun Day at Newcastle’s Foreshore Park on Saturday 26 May from 11am to 3pm. “It’ll be a great trip and we’re going to some great towns,” Mr Wattus says. “When we get back, it’s just a chance for people to have a look at
the cars and it gives us a chance to give back to our sponsors. “It’s a bit of exposure for their business, so hopefully they can get something out of it too.” The Variety NSW Bash departs the foreshore at 8am on Sunday. - Ben Murphy

Academic joins global list A chemical engineer at the University of Newcastle has joined the likes of the late Stephen Hawking and a galaxy of renowned scientists such as Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin and Albert Einstein as a fellow of the Royal Society. Laureate Professor Graeme Jameson AO was recognised by the Royal Society – the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence – for his work on fluid and particle mechanics, especially the flotation process for recovering valuable minerals. As the director of the university’s Centre for Multiphase Processes, he is acclaimed for his invention of the Jameson cell, a revolutionary mineral processing technology installed around the world. More than 300 Jameson cells are now in operation across 25 countries, with the invention estimated to have earned nearly $40 billion for the Australian export industry. The technology has been widely used to remove fine coal from waste streams and is also used to recover metals such as copper, gold and lithium; to remove suspended solids
from dairy in ice cream factories, at breweries, chicken factories and wineries; as well as to treat industrial effluents and remove hydraulic oil from cooling water streams. Professor Jameson, who joined the University of Newcastle 40 years ago as the Professor of Chemical Engineering, said being elected as a fellow of the Royal Society was a very prestigious accolade for working scientists. “This is a great honour for me, the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment, and the University of Newcastle,” he said. “I never imagined that I would become a fellow, and I’m still rather dazed about it. “I am very grateful to be included among a list of distinguished scientists and engineers who have been recognised by the Royal Society.” Each year, up to 52 fellows and up to 10 foreign members are elected from a group of about 700 candidates, who are proposed by the existing fellowship for having made a substantial contribution to the improvement of natural knowledge. Professor Jameson joins two other University

news Fee scrapped People power leads to koala funds Inner-city businesses are set for a much-needed weekend boost thanks to a move by Newcastle council and Newcastle Now to offer free parking on Saturdays at the King Street car park. The council has scrapped the $7 parking fee at the Mall Parking Station until the end of the year. Under the joint-partnership, Newcastle Now, a business improvement association, will lease the car park for a nominal fee each Saturday, with council staff continuing to operate it. One Penny Black café owner, Josh Gibson, welcomed the move. “All the local businesses are working together at the moment to try and help each other,” he said. “We’re all doing it a bit tough at the moment, so hopefully things will improve when the light rail construction is finished.”
All the hard work and dedication finally paid off. Port Stephens Koalas – a volunteer-led, koala rescue and rehabilitation organisation – has received $3 million from the state government following a community campaign that called for a koala hospital to save the local population from extinction. The first stage of the hospital was made possible via $124,000 seed funding, provided through the
Community Building Partnership grant program two years ago. Since then, Port Stephens Koalas has worked hard to establish rehabilitation pens while seeking support from other sources to develop the remaining stages. Port Stephens MP Kate Washington praised volunteers’ persistence. “They give so generously of their time and energy to protect our local koalas from extinction,” she said.
“The koala hospital will support them and their important work.” The government’s Koala Strategy, announced last week, also allocates $20 million from the NSW Environmental Trust to purchase prime koala habitat for reservation. Ms Washington again called on the government to buy back Mambo Wetlands, which was sold to a property developer for $250,000 in an online auction in 2016.
New hospital’s design unveiled The state government has unveiled its design plans for the new $450 million Maitland Hospital at Metford. Minister for Health, Brad Hazzard, encouraged residents to offer feedback on the plans. “Earlier this year, work commenced on site at Metford to ensure we deliver
what the region needs - a world-class hospital close to home,” he said. “The NSW Liberal and Nationals Government is focused on making that happen as soon as possible.” The community is invited to view the new designs and learn more about the hospital at an information desk in
Stockland Green Hills on Saturday 19 May, from 9am to 4pm. The new hospital, which is located on a greenfield site, will provide a raft of services, including emergency, medical, surgical, paediatric, maternity, critical care, palliative care, mental health, and chemotherapy.

cover story Paws for a cause Hunter RSPCA Million Paws Walk organisers hope a change of scenery for this year’s walk will draw more people and their fourlegged friends. The 2.5-kilometre walk to fight animal cruelty and raise money for the RSPCA’s services will be held at Newcastle’s Foreshore Park on Sunday 20 May. In previous years, the event has been held at Morpeth Common and Speers Point Park. Hunter Animal Care Services senior manager, Debbie Jaggers, believes the event may have been held at Foreshore Park some years ago. “We look around every year at different venues in terms of what will attract the most attendees and provide the most fundraising opportunities,” Dr Jaggers says. “Foreshore Park is a great venue

and it’ll be fantastic to be by the water, hopefully in the sunshine. “Newcastle council has been extremely supportive [of the event].” The Million Paws Walk is the RSPCA’s biggest annual fundraising event, and all proceeds are kept in the Hunter Region to fund things like school holiday pet care educational programs and inspectors. The event is a great opportunity to learn more about these services, with inspectors, information stalls and even dogs up for adoption on the day. For those interested in animal foster care, you can also find out how to become a volunteer. And if you’re just there to have a good time and enjoy the great outdoors, well, there’s plenty of opportunity to do that too. Following the walk at 10am,

there will be competitions, food stalls, and the chance to mingle and “make new friends”. “Mixing with other dog owners is a highly social activity,” Dr Jagger said. “We just want everyone to come out, enjoy the day and have fun.”
Walkers and their furry friends can pre-register for the Million Paws Walk online at millionpawswalk.com.au/locations/ NSW/hunter Registrations will also be taken on the day from 8.30am. - Georgia Osland
news Lace up for a cause If you love the treadmill (or at the very least can tolerate it), there are two ways to pour your passion into a cause later this month. Both Genesis Fitness and Anytime Fitness clubs in the Newcastle and Hunter Region are holding treadmill challenges to raise funds for two important causes. The first kicks off at 9am on Thursday 24 May across all nine of Genesis’ gyms in the region, with the aim of raising $10,000 for a special little boy named Ashley Armstrong. One-and-a-half-year-old Ash has FoxG1 Syndrome, a rare, non-hereditary genetic neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts brain and development function. There are roughly only 350 people with FoxG1 in the world, most of whom are tube-fed and
suffer epileptic seizures. The eldest known person living with FoxG1 is 17 years old. Despite this, Ash’s family – mum Jess, dad Scott, and older brother Karmichael, of Rutherford – remain positive and focused on making Ash’s life as mobile and inclusive as possible. This includes making sure he has all the equipment he needs. Right now, that’s a $15,000 chair, so Ash can sit upright. It is hoped the funds raised during Genesis’ 24-hour challenge, where staff and community members will each donate $10 to walk or run part of the way, will help the family significantly. The challenge’s end at 9am on Friday 25 May rolls into Super Hero Day and Healthy Cake Day at Genesis Fitness Rutherford. The same day, at 3pm, another

Recreational spaces a focus of capital works program New and improved recreational spaces will be a focus of Lake Macquarie council’s capital works program over the next 12 months, with parks, playgrounds, sports fields, swimming areas and a new public art trail among the facilities planned for the growing community. Construction of Belmont Baths, Pelican Boat Ramp and Charlestown Skate Park, completion of the Pasterfield Sports Complex at Cameron Park, and the installation of artworks for the Creative Lake Initiative are part of more than $100 million worth of projects forecast in the council’s Draft Operational Plan 2018-2019. The plan also details more than $30 million in roadworks, including the extension of Munibung Road to provide a
direct link between Boolaroo and Cardiff. Lake Macquarie mayor, Kay Fraser, said the council was keen to hear from the community about the proposals and priorities outlined in the plan. “We’re inviting the community to find out what works will be done in their area and meet their councillors at drop-in sessions across the city,” she said. “These drop-in sessions are an opportunity for our community to review the proposals and share their feedback, as well as have a chat with their local councillors and meet other people from their area.” Visit shape.lakemac.com. au/our-future-in-detail to view the plan or provide feedback by Monday 28 May.

news Salvos turns Frank’s life around When Frank Gorman was serving jail time, he never intended on changing his ways. “In jail, there’s a mentality to become a better criminal – not stop,” Frank says. “I wasn’t thinking about getting out and getting a job, I was thinking about getting out and doing better robberies.” Frank had a rough childhood, and often went without. He quickly learned that if he wanted anything in life, he had to get it himself. At nine years old, he committed his first break-and-enter. Of course, when police arrested him, Frank refused to confess, and was released from custody. Eleven years later, he would be sentenced to eight years imprisonment for armed robbery. Frank has spent more than 20 years behind bars. But his life took a new direction when he was released on parole, and Salvation Army officer Simon Adamo was waiting for him on the other side. Simon doesn’t look like your average Christian. But under the biker image is a man who was also

rescued from a crime-fuelled life by the Salvos, and is now passionate about giving back. Frank knew, when he was released, that it would be different this time. He had support. Simon helped Frank organise accommodation, welfare, and other necessities to get his life back on track. “For the majority of people [on parole], they come out of jail with a plastic bag full of crumpled clothes, with half a cheque, if they’re lucky,” Simon says. “They’ve got to get themselves to appointments and it becomes all too hard, so you go back to your old mates and get stuck in the same old ways. “I think it does make a difference that I’ve been there and I can relate.” Today, Frank has his own home, with his own belongings, and works as a cleaner at the Salvos’ Oasis Hunter outreach centre in Hamilton. He’s saved up to buy a car and is working towards his driver’s licence. What’s more, he’s reconnected with his daughters. “I see the good that goes on here, and I hope that what I do, contributes in some way,” he says. “I’m living a normal life, and I’m happy.”

Light rail on right track
Get active to beat dementia professionals provided a lifeline to me and my family, and I would encourage anybody in similar circumstances to reach out for this vital support.” The Hunter Memory Walk & Jog, which offers the choice of a two-kilometre walk, 7.5km walk or 7.5km run, has set a fundraising target of $300,000. Apart from Ms Younane, fellow participant Kate Brown is also fully aware of the devastating impact of dementia. “I don’t have any family or friends affected by it, but I work with a lot of people with dementia every day as a registered nurse,” Ms Brown said. “[The event] was advertised at work and I also love a good crosscountry run, so I decided to sign up.” An estimated 425,000 people have dementia in Australia. This number is projected to reach more than 1.1 million by 2056.

Revitalising Newcastle program director Michael Cassel says the city’s light rail project has made significant progress this year. Workers have surpassed half a million work hours since construction began in September 2017; the sewer main replacements on Hunter Street are finished; and the first fully completed section of track near Brown Street is now open. “So much of the construction is below ground and, with most of that part of the job done, you can now see track coming together along the route by the day,” Mr Cassel says. “More than a quarter of the track is now built, and we’re on schedule to have construction completed on time later this year and trams operational in 2019.” Footpaths are also being upgraded along Hunter Street.

Actress Doris Younane has been a long-time supporter of the Memory Walk & Jog. The annual event raises muchneeded funds for Dementia Australia, which provides invaluable support, education and resources for people living with dementia in the Hunter Region, as well as their carers, families and friends. Ms Younane will again join participants at Speers Point Park this weekend in honour of her mother, who lived with dementia. The McLeod’s Daughters star said being touched personally by the condition had given her an understanding of the life-changing impact it could have on the entire family. “That’s what makes the support of Dementia Australia so important,” she said. “Being able to talk to experienced

Racing into debut After growing up in Newcastle and spending every moment of his childhood riding all of the region’s trails, Cameron Ivory’s local knowledge is second to none. But, ironically, he has never competed in Port to Port – one of Australia’s premier mountain bike stage races – due to commitments overseas. That’s about to change as Ivory gears up for his debut in the event. He is excited to join riders among the region’s state forests, wine country, hinterland, and national parks. “I know most of the tracks up there, especially now that the format has been changed up a little bit, but I have never raced Port to Port before, which is why I am super excited to get there this year,” Ivory said. Ivory started his career on two wheels, riding his BMX every day with the local kids in the bush behind his house. He soon started racing against the world’s best on the international stage. “We used to go to the skate park and do jumps all through the holidays until we had blisters on our hands,” he said.
An error-riddled performance saw the Newcastle Knights spiral to a second straight defeat as visitors Penrith cruised to a 29-18 victory at McDonald Jones Stadium on Friday night. The Knights, looking to bounce back after losing to South Sydney in round nine, started slowly and were down by 12 points at half-time. From there, playmaker James Maloney kicked Penrith clear with two penalty goals and a field goal and then found Corey Harawira-Naera with a classy chip to seal the match. Newcastle will face the Gold Coast Titans at Cbus Super Stadium from 3pm on Saturday 19 May.

“Being a fit child, playing as many sports as I could and with the skills from BMX, cross country mountain biking just seemed to work.” Port to Port begins at Pokolbin on Thursday 24 May and ends at Glenrock, Newcastle, on Sunday 27 May. Visit porttoportmtb.com for more information.
Northstars’ six-point haul The Newcastle Northstars returned home bruised, bloody, but with six points after an Australian Ice Hockey League (AIHL) double header in Victoria. The Northstars downed the Melbourne Ice on Saturday 5-4 before fending off a fast-finishing Melbourne Mustangs to record a 4-3 win on Sunday. Newcastle will hit the road again this weekend, with two fixtures in Adelaide against the Adrenaline.

WHAT IS FLOATING? This form of therapy involves lying in a specifically designed tank that is filled with water warmed to your skin temperature. Dissolved in the water is up to 400kgs of Epsom salts. This extremely dense solution enables people of all body types to float effortlessly and escape the pull of gravity. Here at Lacor Float Centre we use the Apollo tank, which is perfectly designed to eliminate all outside distractions such as sight, sound, tactile sensations and, of course, gravity. Once you are settled in the tank, it is virtually impossible to distinguish between parts of the body that are in contact with the water and those that aren’t, in effect “tricking” the brain into believing that you are floating freely in mid-air. What happens when you take away all external stimulation? Your body and your mind go into a blissful meditative state which is perfect for alleviating symptoms of stress, anxiety and muscle soreness.

Get to the root of back pain
B
ack pain treatments are doing more harm than good, according to a recent report in the esteemed Lancet medical journal. In landmark research, Australian and international back experts assert that back pain has increased dramatically in recent years and is now the leading cause of disability globally. The three papers, published in March this year, found millions of people were given pointless drugs, surgery and injections, with one-third prescribed dangerous opioid prescriptions. “This type of approach is simply ineffective
The friendly staff at Family Life Chiropractic endeavour to keep you and your family’s spinal health in tip-top shape.
and more harmful to the patient,” Family Life Chiropractic’s founder and principal chiropractor, Dr David Diehm, says. “Continuing down this path is seen as mismanaging back pain. “The research for lower back pain treatment is pointing us in the direction of less invasive approaches that support movement and stronger emphasis on lifestyle advice for self-management.” Sedentary lifestyles and the emergence of technology has both affected our posture and reduced the amount of movement our spines receive. “Our focus when we first meet someone suffering from back pain is to determine the cause. Pain is like an alarm bell in the body, trying to motivate change; the actual cause of the pain is often elsewhere,” Dr Diehm adds. “We find the best results come from addressing other areas of tension in the spine and nervous system that have contributed to the problem.” A gentle adjustment to the spine helps realign and restore the correct joint function. This supports the body’s ability to heal and repair itself naturally. With the stretching of a joint, gas is released, and
a popping sound can be heard. For those of you who cringe at the idea of a pop, we have invested in state-of-the-art technology that allows us to make gentle spinal adjustments without the accompanying “pop” noise. At Family Life Chiropractic we place a strong emphasis on education. Each new client’s first two visits are spent finding the cause of their problem and empowering the individual to be able to make informed decisions about their health.

The sell-out sensation, who stars in the BBC television show by the same name, is about to return to Australia for the fifth time on his Mister Maker Returns tour, and is expecting a warm reception. “The Aussie kids are so enthusiastic and always want to come up on stage,” Gallagher tells Newcastle Weekly. “We’ve done huge UK tours, but sometimes the English kids aren’t as confident to come up on stage. “In Australia, we don’t have that problem!” Since his debut in 2007, Mister Maker has gained international
success with his unique ability to encourage children to use their imaginations in fun and creative ways. Screened in more than 100 countries, and dubbed in several different languages, Mister Maker’s crafty approach to children’s entertainment sees mini-makers transcend culture and age, with a fan base ranging from toddlers to adults. “As Mister Maker, I always try to really encourage kids to have a go at making stuff, even if they’re not sure they can,” Gallagher says. “Often that same approach will work for grown-ups, too.” Joining Mister Maker on stage during the tour will be his famous sidekicks, The Shapes, as well as the

When Lisa Greissl underwent treatment for a rare and malignant cancer, many of her friends and family didn’t know what to say or do. “Everyone’s journey is different, so you can never put yourself in their shoes,” she says. Luckily, Lisa won her battle with cancer, and she immediately began to think of a way that loved ones could show their support. Eventually, she set up a heartwarming initiative called The Big Hug Box. Each box is fi lled with natural and organic products sourced from small businesses in Newcastle and all profits are donated to Cure Cancer Australia. “The products are chosen from my experiences and other people's experiences, so there are things for hair loss, nausea, and other side-effects of treatment,” Lisa says.
“We’ve also got a few pampering products – I’m really grateful that a lot of small businesses have reached out and donated additional products.” Lisa’s initiative has already been recognised by Awesome Newcastle – a foundation that helps the artists, creators, ideas people and leaders of the city – after The Big Hug Box took out this month’s $1,000 grant. “The Big Hug Box is only close to five months old and it started with next to nothing,” Lisa says. “It was fantastic to win the grant, but equally as great to have the support of business people and to network as well. “[Awesome Newcastle] is a fantastic initiative and I recommend it to other startup businesses. “I didn’t realise how big this charity would become, so I’ll use the grant to give the website a more professional

Spellbinding performance Ask anyone who grew up in the 70s and they’ll be able to tell you exactly when and where it was they first heard Tubular Bells. Composed by Mike Oldfield in 1973, the album was the first release on Richard Branson’s fledgling record label, Virgin Records. The album went on to sell more than 30 million copies, kickstarting the Virgin empire, and became the soundtrack to the cult-classic film, The Exorcist. Fast-forward more than 40 years, and two young Australian multiinstrumentalists, Tom Bamford and Daniel Holdsworth, are presenting a modern masterpiece in a challenging stage show, titled Tubular Bells for Two. Two blokes juggle more than 20 instruments live on stage in a spellbinding performance. They must perform every part

Cstudios wants everyone to know that, despite ongoing light rail works in the city centre, it’s still open for business. “It is affected, but don’t let that deter you,” gallery director Jo Chisolm-Ray says. Cstudios is an open, airy, inner-city gallery that exhibits a wide range of works by local and out-of-town artists, including those from the Central Coast, Sydney and Melbourne. Chisolm-Ray places great emphasis on supporting local artists, and welcomes new exhibitors – beginners or advanced. “It’s important to encourage people to buy local art instead of going and buying a print that’s been reproduced over and over, overseas, when we’ve got so much talent here in Newcastle,” she says. Cstudios’ current installations include The Industry of Us, a
collection of works by Central Coast artists Karen Bloomfield and Leasha Craig. Bloomfield has produced a series of paintings, while Craig worked on sculptures. Despite being from out of town, both artists have managed to capture Newcastle’s industrial history well, Chisolm-Ray says. The Industry of Us is on display until Saturday 2 June. Finding the right fit Finding the perfect pair of jeans is no simple task. The hunt for the right fit and cut to suit your unique body shape can be overwhelming. Comfort and style should be considered equally, and a one-size-fits-all approch rarely works. Let’s explore some of the options to help you narrow it down.
Love It Again SATURDAY 26 May 2018
MEGA
SALE
Straight
Flared
As the name suggests, straight jeans are not too skinny and not too flared – they’re straight down the line. They’re a safe bet and suit most body types. As a bonus, straight jeans can make your legs appear longer.
Oh yes, flared jeans are back. While bootcut jeans open up subtly, these 90s throwbacks flare out around the ankle with a bang.
Boyfriend Skinny Skinny jeans hug the entire leg, from the hip to the ankle. This tapered look highlights every feature (or flaw), so choose wisely. They’re suitable for women with an hourglass body shape or slim legs. Avoid if you have a round or pear-shaped body.
Bootcut Think straight jeans, with more flare at the bottom. New-age bootcut jeans are more tapered than the original style, fitted up to the knees before subtly opening out past the calf muscles. The bootcut is perfect for curvy women.
You can probably guess that these jeans got their name because they look like you borrowed them from, well, your boyfriend. But their stylishness shouldn’t be underestimated. Boyfriend jeans are usually fitted at the hips and somewhat baggy from there down, broadening as you go. Avoid them if you’re short, as they might make you look shorter. - Georgia Osland

Think about size How many family members are using the sofa? How big is the room? Where are your windows and doors placed? What is the sofa’s main function? You must ask these questions when shopping for your next sofa. Sizes range from twoseaters to huge, modular eight-seaters, so consider the amount of people who will be using it regularly.
Measure up Before you buy a new sofa, measure the size of your space in length, width and height. Write the measurements down so you have them handy
on the showroom floor. Also make sure there is plenty of room for delivery; many people forget to measure their hallway or stairwell and end up disappointed when their beautiful sofa can’t make it to the loungeroom.
Select your style From contemporary upholstered lounges, to classic premium leather suites, there is a wide variety of sofa styles, shapes and designs to suit every home and budget. Consider your choice of upholstery and the quality and comfort of your new sofa before you go shopping. Do you prefer modular sofas or are
you seeking a recliner suite? Check out the latest trends and don’t be afraid to ask for advice.
Select your fabric This is one of the most important decisions you will make. The type of upholstery you choose will set the feel for the whole room. The right choice of fabric for your living space will ensure years of comfort and durability so it is best to consider your lifestyle. Do you prefer leather sofas over fabric lounges? Do you have kids and pets using the sofa? Many stores will include a variety of fabric samples for you to browse.

in the garden
Wonder of winter whites IN THE We had a taste of winter last GARDEN weekend. Finally, we can begin JUDY SHARPE planting ‘winter white’. It is surprising how many white plants are planted prior to and during winter. Until the popularity of succulents, the trend was for an all-white garden. Iceberg roses dominated the landscape and, in some gardens, this prolific bloomer still does. Though, I’m going to jog your memory or maybe introduce you to the wonder of white through the planting of annuals and perennials. There isn’t a more economical way to garden than filling bare beds up with punnets of flowers. Once we planted out rows of whited impatiens, in sun or shade, these wonderful perennials bloomed continually, glowing in the dark. But unfortunately, several years ago, they were smitten with downey mildew and are no longer readily available. However, we have substituted them with the New Guinea hybrids, which are generally sold as a grown plant in a pot already on bloom. Not quite as economical, but certainly rewarding flowering over some years. The carnations little sister, dianthus, is a wonderful perennial which keeps re-shooting and blooming continually – it looks wonderful planted as a border in front of white snapdragons. Planting white stock and foxgloves will create a great cottage garden, to which a border of white alyssum will seed and continue to produce new plants. One of my favourite bedding plants is Primula obconica, a beautiful white perennial that can also be grown indoors. It is the larger-leafed form of Primula Gillhams white, which becomes massed with pure white flowers. Plant this form in front of a row of bright green parsley to get the ‘wow’ factor. If you have a small garden, balcony or courtyard, all of the above look fabulous in pots or window boxes - remember to use a quality potting mix and apply Flourish weekly to the garden or pots.
Could your kitchen do with a facelift...at less cost?

• Spring bulbs should be out of the fridge and being planted by the end of May - don’t forget to fertilise on planting and on emergence. • Houseplants should be given a fertilise and then be allowed to rest during winter. • Keep trying to revive those brown patches in the lawn - apply Seasol or Green Flourish with a light top dress to encourage growth. • Winter grass is appearing - nice green tufts now, but wait until the seed heads appear and it is too late to treat. Spray now with Endothal.

PICK OF THE WEEK Enemy Of The State
The Terminator
Monday, 7MATE, 9pm, M (1998) A breathless thrill ride for all the paranoids out there who whole-heartedly believe the government truly is watching them. Will Smith (pictured) is the straight-as-a-die lawyer who comes into possession of a disc that contains footage of the murder of a congressman by unknown assailants, and he soon becomes the prime target of government goons. With thrills and chills that seldom lapse into hysteria this is a well-paced techno-conspiracy theory film that will make you more than wary of those little cameras in the corners of the supermarket.
Friday
Tuesday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (1984) James Cameron’s seminal sci-fi film found Arnold Schwarzenegger (pictured) a niche as the cyborg sent back in time on an assassination mission that is thwarted by soldier Michael Biehn. And in the role of the apocalyptically burdened Sarah Connor, Linda Hamilton staked her claim (alongside Sigourney Weaver) as the toughest heroine ever to grace the big screen. Imitations followed, but this entry and its fullblooded, effects-enhanced sequel owns the territory.
The Bourne Legacy
Sunday, 7MATE, 8.45pm, M (2012) Set in the same world as Matt Damon’s outstanding trilogy, The Bourne Legacy makes do just fine without the series’ original protagonist, Jason Bourne. Taking on the lead role this time is The Hurt Locker star Jeremy Renner (pictured) as super soldier Aaron Cross. After surviving an attempt on his life during a training exercise in Alaska, Cross embarks on a quest to find those responsible for his genetic enhancement. His hunt leads him to biochemist Rachel Weisz, who helps his search for those behind the top-secret operation that spawned him – and Bourne before him.

INTRODUCING GOOFY Goofy is a 6 month old large Male Catahoula x Great Dane Mix and I’m on the search for my forever. I’m a big boy already so I need a home that is looking for a large sized dog. I’ll need a home that wants to continue my training as I’m young and my previous home didn’t provide much training. My basic obedience is progressing and I’m walking well on a leash. I do great out on walks and even like visiting the beach.
NW0276-V9
Everything is just so new to me so a home that is looking for a loving boy is what I need. I’m located in the Newcastle Region and my adoption fee will be $400. Please contact Tiki Rescue if you are interested.

He will also develop greater maturity and discover a true feeling of faith and destiny, both in himself and in events that occur. This year will also be putting him back into contact with people from his past, old friends, associates and even past romances.
ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
Venus in Gemini indicates that if you have something to say to a certain someone, you won’t hold back. Maybe you feel you didn’t sort things out when you had the chance and now need to clear the air finally. Just avoid being a bully or bad loser.
You’ve had your doubts about a certain person recently but before you pin them down, ask yourself whether it’s any of your business to begin with. Join a group that caters for one of your interests so you already have something in common with those you’ll meet there.
Try not to let worry about what might go wrong in the future stop you from taking practical steps here and now. Your sensitivity is both a strength and a weakness and a comment made by someone at work will test your ability to rise above hurt.
Jupiter is in your house of partnerships bringing with it a fresh start on the love front. You’ll exude charm and put it to good use. Singles, someone new may cross your path at a public gathering, a meeting where you work or at a party. New horizons look promising.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
Venus is in Gemini until the 20th and personal pleasure and the promise of great satisfaction are clearly indicated for you. Business prospects look good; certainly the pace is picking up. You’ll be focusing on ways to increase your prospects for long-range financial security.
Mercury squares Saturn indicating that communicating with colleagues or clients could be a challenge, so be crystal clear in all you say. If you don’t understand something, ask the person to clarify it. Important documents might also get misplaced so save extra copies of your work.
This month, the more you work with others, the greater your progress will be. Use those close to you as sounding boards and present them with your ideas; it’s very unlikely they will steal them. You may possess great intensity, but that doesn’t mean you have all the answers.
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
With Venus in your sign it’s the ideal time for livening things up. If you’ve been rather predictable lately or stuck in a rut, think about how you can get things moving once again. Be open to other people’s suggestions and embrace trying something for the first time.
Venus is in your 10th house and you’re likely to receive an offer of work that you haven’t done before. Don’t dismiss it; you’ll find you have the expertise required. You’re a good manager and will reap the rewards of your foresight when you’re able to afford something you really want.
Your ruling planet Jupiter is on a retrograde path and whilst you may not feel like it, you need to look into your financial situation and work out a sensible budget for the future. On the personal front, don’t let yourself be drawn into things that don’t really matter.
Friends are important to you and significantly, you’re sometimes a lifeline to them. Be generous with your time and patient when an old friend turns up with a familiar problem and asks for help. If you’re thinking of enlarging your family circle, this is the right time.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
Venus in Gemini until 20 May indicates that a piece of financial luck may come your way so be certain to spend some of it on yourself. Your popularity is going to soar and your diary is going to be full of chances to have fun.

My favourite things GOLF I have been a pretty good golfer since I was young and spent a lot of time in and around golf clubs. I don’t play competitively anymore, but love being on the course with my mates telling stories and sledging each other.
BEING A DAD I am lucky to have two healthy and happy children – Will and Amelia – and my wife Bridget and I just love spending time with them. I am very lucky to work for Variety, which is focused on supporting kids and families that aren’t as lucky as mine.
MOVIES One of my favourite ways to relax is to watch a new release movie. I am a huge Tom Cruise fan (sorry), who I think is the best action man of all time. But I also love watching old school slap stick comedians like Chevy Chase, Leslie Nielsen and Bill Murray. I think the best nowadays are Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller and Will Ferrell.
Jason Bourke
GOOD PEOPLE I am really drawn to people who are positive, energetic and don’t like to talk about themselves too much. I have been so lucky in my life to have had a beautiful and supportive wife, great parents, and a good circle of friends and work colleagues.
HEAD OF REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT, VARIETY – THE CHILDREN’S CHARITY
Jason puts his reputation as a “people person” down to his upbringing in country towns like Muswellbrook, Taree and Orange, following his Dad’s police postings. Meeting people from different places, classes and walks of life is something Jason really enjoys. He has built a career focusing on helping people through his work in community development in local government as the inaugural executive officer of the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, and now as the head of regional development for Variety – the Children’s Charity. Away from work, Jason is a longsuffering Parramatta Eels fan, Seinfeld tragic and avid landscape gardener. 58
MUSIC My tastes are pretty eclectic, with everything from Elvis to dance music to Muddy Waters and The Cat Empire on my playlists. We also love going to concerts at one of the Hunter’s wineries, Lizottes, or down in Sydney.
