This week... From the editor I think we should all be open to trying new things, from the smallest to the most (potentially) life-changing. Maintaining an open mind, I believe, presents far more opportunities in life than sticking to what we know and like. In the past month alone, I’ve tried: a 30day challenge at my gym, switching from plastic to stainless steel straws and drink bottles, house sitting, frozen fruit soft serve (a serious game-changer), turning off social media notifications, and a new supermarket. Look, not all of these things have changed my life drastically, but some of them have been very beneficial, all because I decided to give it a go. I’ve never tried chestnuts, but I think maybe I will after seeing this week’s recipes on pages 32 and 33. What will you try today? A reminder, with school back in session this week, to slow down in school zones. Children are some of our most vulnerable road users, and, whether out of ignorance or arrogance, I see too many people speed. It is reassuring to see Roads and Maritime Services is installing mid-block pedestrian traffic lights and a new shared pathway on the busy Hillsborough Road in Warners Bay, two years after 15-year-old Jade Frith was fatally hit by a car while crossing the road. A sobering thought. - Georgia Osland

news Pledge to end homelessness The common perception of a homeless person is an old man with a mental illness or drug or alcohol problem. He sleeps in a park, tent, doorway or under a bridge. Newcastle’s Jenn O’Sullivan believes it is an inaccurate stereotype. “There’s the misconception that they might be lazy or on drugs or mentally ill, but only 7% of homeless people have severe mental health and substance abuse issues,” she says. “We can all be two pay cheques away from homelessness; if we have to move out of rentals and there’s nowhere around, then we are in trouble. “I’ve personally experienced homelessness and I know first-hand that it can happen to any of us.” Ms O’Sullivan is now the executive manager of Path 2 Change – a Hunterbased, not-for-profit, early-intervention and homeless prevention program.
The organisation provides young people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, with specialised support and access to education, training and employment opportunities. It was one of the first groups to sign a pledge at Newcastle City Hall last week. The Hunter Pledge to End Homelessness saw businesses and councils from across the region agree to act to reduce homelessness. A new, national Everybody’s Home five-point plan to fix Australia’s housing system has set a target to end homelessness by 2030. The latest 2016 Census figures, released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in March, showed homelessness rates are on the rise, up 12% in the Hunter Region since 2011. Ms O’Sullivan says there needs to be more community support to solve

the growing epidemic. “This pledge is important to us, as a homeless service, because we want to get the community more involved and break down barriers and the perception that ‘oh, they’ve got themselves into that situation,’” she says. “The community really needs to
know what’s going on right under their noses.” The pledge was an initiative of the region’s Big Ideas Homelessness Network. Each year, the signatories will be asked to renew their pledge and report on what they have achieved. - Ben Murphy

Community groups have underlined a lack of publiclyaccessible land as the main reason for their opposition to a proposed development at Toronto Foreshore. Lake Macquarie council will embark on a 12-month development application process for a mixed-use residential, tourism and commercial building near Bath Street. The proposed site forms part of Toronto’s foreshore park. The council’s manager for property and business development, Kate Cramp, says proactive measures are needed to ensure key town centres, such as Toronto, remain viable. “We believe projects like this can enhance our town centres, and already there is excitement building as we consider what impact major tourism and investments like this could have on our local economy,” she says. The council states it has earmarked the site as an ideal tourism opportunity for decades. But Coal Point Progress Association president, Suzanne Pritchard, believes that, with Toronto’s population expected
to grow 20% by 2030, there is a dire need for open space and recreational facilities. The population prediction was made in the council’s Development Contributions Plan. “When council first started acquiring the land, there wasn’t this population pressure on Toronto,” Ms Pritchard says. “If council can’t provide the community with the public facilities it needs, who will? “Toronto has the least amount of publicly-accessible foreshore of any lakeside town in the city and they want to take half of that away and put development on it.” Rotary Club of Toronto Sunrise member, Jeff Jansson, claimed the council bought parcels of land from locals who believed the intent was to provide a parkland for the community. “Now council views this valuable foreshore real estate as something that council can profit from, reneging on the deal they made with the people of Toronto,” Mr Jansson says. The council will study the proposed development site and carry out community consultation. - Ben Murphy

news Vital tool for victims of violence
Site joins heritage list
It’s a widespread problem in Australia. One woman a week, on average, is killed by a partner or former spouse, while one in three has experienced physical violence since the age of 15. For the past 12 months, the Newcastle Domestic Violence committee has worked tirelessly to produce a vital tool for victims of domestic and family violence (DFV). The Hunter Domestic and Family Violence Resource Card provides a directory of local and national services, information on DFV, and safety planning. Newcastle Domestic Violence committee secretary Colleen Mullins says the regionwide resource has been a team effort. “Women experiencing domestic or family violence will be able to have access to all of the resources that they can tap into,” she says. “We’re really thrilled that it was a collaboration between all of the domestic violence committees in the region: Cessnock, Port Stephens, the Upper Hunter, Eastlakes, Westlakes and Newcastle.”
The site of Newcastle’s first drinking water reservoirs has joined an esteemed list of significant places and buildings on the State Heritage Register. Number 1 Reservoir, also known as ‘The Res’, provided the city with its first town water supply, holding two million litres of water pumped from the Walka Water Works near Maitland. Built in 1882, its design features a unique arch structure and 32 four-metre columns, which are remnants of Newcastle’s colonial past. The now decommissioned reservoir remains a valuable community asset, with Hunter Water reopening the site for public tours in May 2015. Thousands of people have taken advantage of the free tours, which are run by ballot. Number 2 Reservoir is also located on the corner of Tyrrell and Brown streets, and continues to serve as a functioning reservoir for Newcastle’s East End. Minister for Energy and Utilities, Don Harwin, said the Newcastle Reservoirs Site was an important part of the region’s water supply history. “The reservoirs were integral to the growth and industrialisation of Newcastle, allowing for population growth and industry to flourish,” he said.
The card was officially launched at the Hunter Women’s Centre late last month. A number of organisations helped fund its development, including Got Your Back Sista and the Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy Service (WDVCAS), while Newcastle council vowed to chip in a further $5,000 for a second print of the cards. Ms Mullins says the committee’s focus will now turn to the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence campaign, which starts on 25 November – White Ribbon Day. The committee also hopes to raise awareness of domestic violence through education. “We’re looking at having an early intervention program in high schools,” Ms Mullins says. “The younger generation – we can shift the culture there with what’s a healthy relationship and what’s okay.” You can email ourtownonevoice@gmail. com to request a resource card. - Ben Murphy

Luncheon’s landmark One of the nation’s 100 living treasures will headline the Maitland Black and White Committee’s 50th anniversary luncheon this month. The Fred Hollows Foundation’s founding director, Gabi Hollows AO, is set to appear at the annual fundraising event as a guest speaker. Ms Hollows, who was born in Newcastle, graduated as an orthoptist and worked with her late husband, Fred, to screen for, and treat, eye disease within remote indigenous communities. Since its inception, the Maitland Black and White Committee has raised more than $1 million for Vision Australia – the leading provider of blindness and low vision services in the country. Committee president Heather McLaren hopes the 2018 luncheon will be another great success. “[Last year] it was the 50th anniversary of the committee’s inception; we had about 500 guests and [ABC TV presenter and political journalist] Annabel Crabb was our special guest,” she says. “This time, we’re celebrating the 50th anniversary of when we had our first lunch. “We are delighted to have Gabi attending – she’s so involved with
The Fred Hollows Foundation and we’re there to raise money for the visually impaired and blind in the Hunter, so to have her there is a great association.” During the luncheon, the committee will present Vision Australia with a cheque for $85,000 from last year’s event, which, due to its popularity, prompted a change in venue from the town hall to the Maitland Showground pavilion. Ms McLaren says the event receives incredible support from the local community. “We’ll be at the showground pavilion – a wonderful Maitland icon – again this year,” she says. “The [Hunter River] Agricultural and Horticultural Society has been very helpful and the local Lions club is doing our parking on the day. “It’s wonderful to be able to associate with other service clubs in the area and work in partnership, and we have marvellous support from local businesses.” The luncheon will start at 11.30am on Thursday 17 May. Tickets cost $90; contact the committee’s treasurer on 0425 248 425. - Ben Murphy

Learning to ride a bike is a huge milestone in any child’s life, but even more so for seven-year-old Kyneen Honess. Young Kyneen, from Tarro, has cerebral palsy, which significantly restricts the use of his right arm, and, therefore, his ability to balance. But, thanks to a generous gift from TAD, mum Jamie says Kyneen will be able to “keep pace” with his three siblings, and maybe even
outride them. The organisation, which provides personalised equipment, technology and services to people living with a disability, gifted Kyneen a custom-built Freedom Wheels bike with a back pedal brake, full toe clip support, custom handlebar and a medium hi-riser. It’s the bike Kyneen was prescribed 18 months ago by an occupational therapist, but the family’s funding application to the National Disability Insurance Scheme was rejected. Then, about two months ago, Jamie received a phone call from TAD, notifying her that the organisation had secured a grant through Aurizon’s Community Giving Fund to buy Kyneen’s bike. Now, he can finally ride with his friends and family at the park. - Georgia Osland
Young people have their say
Skills stem from coveted program While thousands of Hunter students returned to school this week, 16 school-leavers each took up a coveted position in TAFE NSW Newcastle’s STEMship program. A joint initiative by Regional Development Australia Hunter, Training Services NSW, and TAFE NSW, STEMship is Australia’s first STEM-based, VET pre-employment program. It provides an employment pathway for secondary school students as an alternative to university. The program aims to foster job creation in the Hunter by producing a talent pool of workready employees for industries such as defence, advanced manufacturing, engineering, resources, electronics and aerospace. Year 11 Francis Greenway High School student and Rural Fire Service volunteer, Zane Folpp, says he hopes the program will better equip him with skills and qualifications for employment. “I believe that by doing this program and having valuable contact with industries, I will be a step above other candidates,” he says.
The STEMship program cohort.
“I am very interested in the engineering and manufacturing side of things and enjoy getting my hands dirty, pulling things apart and putting them back together. “I believe I will be learning up-to-date information and skills related to the industry I am interested in, and I will be able to experience and put these skills into place.” In addition to relevant training and work experience, STEMship participants will develop skills around resume writing, team building, workplace behaviour, and address any numeracy and literacy issues that could otherwise form employment barriers.
Mission Australia has opened its annual Youth Survey to canvass the opinions of young people aged 15 to 19. This year’s survey will delve deeper into issues around social media, alcohol and drugs, employment barriers, and how young people feel about their community. With a record number of 24,000 participants around the country in 2017, Mission Australia hopes to reach more than 30,000 participants by the survey’s closing date on 31 July. Last year’s respondents identified mental health, alcohol and drugs, and equity and discrimination as the top three issues affecting young people, with mental health ranking as the numberone concern for the first time in the survey’s 16-year history. news Notorious stretch needs quick fix, MP says Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison has described the Maitland Railway Station roundabout overpass as the state government’s $51 million “white elephant”, amid a call for urgent funding. Ms Aitchison says the eastbound fly-over, completed in September 2016, has fallen short in addressing the dangerous conditions local motorists and emergency services face each day. She argues that, with a development application being lodged for a new ambulance station at Rutherford, it’s vital for emergency services to travel quickly and safely through the notorious stretch. “This just can’t wait – it’s been a problem for nearly two years
and the government needs to act immediately to address the safety concerns,” she says. “We all knew that the roundabout was never going to be the solution. “I am deeply concerned that there will be a fatality on this stretch of road or someone will die waiting for assistance as the ambulance is stuck in traffic.” Ms Aitchison says she has been in constant discussions with the Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Melinda Pavey MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Regional Roads, Maritime and Transport, Kevin Anderson MP, and Roads and Maritime Services about the community’s concerns since the roundabout opened to traffic.

Passion propels Jets into A-League grand final Coach Ernie Merrick says attitude has played a key role in the Newcastle Jets’ march to this Saturday’s A-League grand final. The former Melbourne Victory and Wellington Phoenix trainer oversaw a meteoric rise in his debut season as the club climbed from last in 2016-17 to second at the end of the current campaign. Now, Newcastle is in the decider for the first time in a decade after the Jets downed Melbourne City 2-1 in the semi-finals. Merrick believes the squad’s eagerness to embrace his approach and tactics has been crucial to the change in fortunes. “It can be very hard to coach and develop a team when some players have ingrained habits,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “I wanted us to go on the front foot, play in the opposition half, get into goal-scoring opportunities as much as possible, but not neglect defence. “From day one, they’ve accepted that and
taken it on board.” The Jets started the campaign in red-hot form, thrashing rivals Central Coast Mariners 5-1 in the opening round to kick off a six-match unbeaten run. Despite suffering a number of setbacks throughout the season, including a serious injury to star recruit Ronny Vargas and the departure of Andrew Nabbout, Newcastle continued to exceed expectations. “We’ve shown great resilience when we have conceded a goal and not put our heads down,” Merrick says. “No matter how many times they’ve scored the first goal, we’ve always looked to respond and that was clear in the very first game when we conceded first against Central Coast and came back to score five.” As for this weekend’s historic grand final at McDonald Jones Stadium – the first time an A-League decider has been held outside a capital city – Merrick says he simply can’t wait.
He believes the passion of football supporters in the Hunter Region is something to behold. “I’ve coached previously at Wellington and Victory and you can sometimes take for granted the emotion of the fans and the size of the club,” he says. “But fans and people in this region are really passionate about their football and they love to get behind their team.” Merrick says the grand final, which has sold-out after an unprecedented demand for tickets, will be even more memorable given the Jets face one of his old clubs. “We want to play the role of the perfect hosts with high-quality, skillful football,” he says. “I’m sure Victory will want to play that way as well, without the animosity, and it’s really special to be going up against a club where I spent six years.” The Jets will take on Melbourne Victory from 7.50pm on Saturday 5 May. -Ben Murphy 15
sport Errors prove costly for Northstars The Newcastle Northstars went down to Canberra 4-2 on Saturday night in the club’s first home game of the season at a sold-out Hunter Ice Skating Stadium. CBR Brave and Newcastle’s rivalry has always led to big build-ups and a physical game. This clash was no different, and the teams were tied 0-0 after the first period. Midway through the second period, Newcastle’s Pat Nadin broke the stalemate and put the Northstars on the scoreboard. However, CBR Brave answered back just minutes later through Joey Hughes, who benefitted from an assist by new goaltender Matt Hewitt. It was proving to be a tough tussle between the two teams but, in the third period, CBR Brave capitalised on two costly slip ups from the Northstars to secure the win. Despite the loss, Newcastle’s assistant coach Joe Theriault said the Northstars would be a formidable force with a full squad available. New import Sam Lawson was not able to play after picking up a major penalty in the season opening game against the Sydney Ice Dogs. The Northstars also have five players – captain Robert Malloy, alternate captain Mat Lindsay, Richie Tesarik,

Newcastle then returns home to take on Sydney Ice Dogs on Sunday 6 May, with the clash starting at 4pm.

Knights win breaks drought Newcastle broke a long drought with an 18-12 win over Manly last Friday. Despite a poor possession rate and only 12 men on the field, after Daniel Saifiti was sinbinned late in the first half, the Knights kept their composure to restrict Manly to a 6-4 lead at the break. Then, with just five minutes to go in the second period, Newcastle fullback Kalyn Ponga produced a precision pass to winger Nathan Ross, who glided through a gap to score the matchwinner. It was the Knights’ first victory at Manly since 2006. Sixth-placed Newcastle will now play South Sydney Rabbitohs on Friday 4 May at McDonald Jones Stadium. Kick-off is at 6pm.

Candied chestnut, blue cheese & fennel salad Prep: 15 minutes
METHOD
Cook: 7 minutes
Candied chestnuts
Serves 4
Heat a non-stick frypan over medium heat, add cooked, peeled and quartered chestnuts, sugar and butter.
INGREDIENTS For the candied chestnuts 150 g cooked and peeled chestnuts, quartered 1/4 cup white sugar 1 tbsp unsalted butter For the salad 1 bulb fennel, trimmed and halved lengthways (reserve fronds to serve)

To make salad, using a V-slicer or sharp knife, very finely slice fennel.

How to cook and peel chestnuts When baking, microwaving or roasting chestnuts, firstly cut a shallow cross into the flat side of the shell to prevent it from overheating and bursting. When boiling, cut the chestnuts in half widthways.
To roast Preheat oven to 200°C (180°C fanforced). Place prepared chestnuts onto a baking tray and bake for 15-20 minutes or until the shells split open.
To microwave To grill or barbecue Place prepared chestnuts on a tray under a moderate to hot grill, or place chestnuts directly onto the barbecue grill, turning a couple of times, for approximately 15-20 minutes or until the shells blacken and split open.
To boil Place prepared chestnuts into a pan of cold water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the flesh is tender and easily separates from the shell.
Place 6-8 prepared chestnuts in a single layer on a microwave-safe plate. Cook, uncovered, on full power for 2-3 minutes or until the flesh is tender. Timing can vary depending on chestnut size and microwave power. Once cooked, remove chestnuts from the heat and wrap in a clean tea towel for 5-10 minutes and then quickly peel off the outer brown shell and remove the papery-thin skin underneath. Peel while they are still warm because they can be tricky to peel when cooled.

THORPE & CO SEWING MACHINES Thorpe & Co Sewing Machines has been an institution in Newcastle since 1935, providing a wide range of well-known quality European brands. Due to the light rail arriving in Hunter Street, we made the decision to move to Boolaroo. We still provide the same excellent service and advice on the new sewing machine that is right for you. Come in this Mother’s Day and let us help you with all your quilting and sewing needs.
LACOR FLOAT CENTRE
A: 15a Main Road, Boolaroo T: 4929 4456 W: thorpeandcosewingmachines.com.au/
With up to 400 kilograms of Epsom salts in each fl oat tank, you are immersed in an environment so buoyant that you fl oat effortlessly and experience a deep state of relaxation and meditation. This relaxation is supplemented by the full-body absorption of magnesium from the water – perfect for recovery from muscle tension, stress and fatigue. A: 6-8 Hall Street, Newcastle West T: 0403 687 696 W: lacornewcastle.com.au
WHAT IS FLOATING? This form of therapy involves lying in a specifically designed tank that is filled with water warmed to your skin temperature. Dissolved in the water is up to 400kgs of Epsom salts. This extremely dense solution enables people of all body types to float effortlessly and escape the pull of gravity. Here at Lacor Float Centre we use the Apollo tank, which is perfectly designed to eliminate all outside distractions such as sight, sound, tactile sensations and, of course, gravity. Once you are settled in the tank, it is virtually impossible to distinguish between parts of the body that are in contact with the water and those that aren’t, in effect “tricking” the brain into believing that you are floating freely in mid-air. What happens when you take away all external stimulation? Your body and your mind go into a blissful meditative state which is perfect for alleviating symptoms of stress, anxiety and muscle soreness.
For bookings and enquiries, please visit our website at www.lacornewcastle.com.au or call us on 0403 687 696. 6-8 Hall Street, Newcastle West NSW 2302 36

YEAR GURANTEE
THE DREAM DOORS ADVANTAGE
Garden sings with cool change Rain and cooler weather, fi nally! Watch the garden say, ‘thank you’. Autumn is the best season for planting trees and shrubs, and the milder weather encourages a return to digging and weeding. All new plants require a daily drink, but it becomes less of a chore during autumn when there is also warmth to establish new plants. Spring bulbs such as tulips and hyacinths need a couple of weeks in the fridge crisper, to trick them into thinking it is winter. Remember to plant them out before the end of May. Bulbs should be fed when planting, on emergence, and again when they fi nish flowering. Cymbidium orchids are just starting to bloom. These beautiful, hardy plants are wonderful to have inside for colour during the winter months; the tall spikes spring from the green, strappy growth, blooming over a long period. Once cymbidiums have

fi nished flowering, they will require a spot in partial shade, in the garden or in a larger pot of necessary. The cooler weather is ideal to divide perennials such as calla, clivia and agapanthus. Fertilise after division. In flower now are Camellia sasanquas (smalller leaves than japonicas). Sasanquas are great for sun or shade, making great hedges for narrow spaces. Cyclamen are the most soughtafter for indoor colour during autumn and winter. They will flower for many months if given a spell outside at night in the cooler night air. Remember to water under the leaves, not on the crown. Winter grass should be treated now before it goes to seed. Their pretty green tufts fool many gardeners. Don’t be tempted to plant roses this month – it is too early and the result will be die-back. Plant roses in June instead.

Choose from a huge range of the latest door styles and colours, handles and benchtops. From pull out pantries, to corner drawer systems, we have you covered. You won’t suffer the stress, mess and upheaval that comes with a new kitchen. All doors and cabinets are made to measure by Australian manufacturers, with a 10-year warranty.

PICK OF THE WEEK Rise Of The Guardians Friday, GO!, 6.30pm, PG (2012) Think of The Avengers, then substitute Santa Claus for Iron Man, the Easter Bunny for Thor and the Tooth Fairy for the Hulk, throw in the Sandman and you have The Guardians. It’s another classic tale of good and evil, the latter being a character called Pitch Black (voiced by Jude Law) intent on stealing the faith the children of Earth have for Santa and co, using fear to do so. The heroes turn to Jack Frost, a young boy sent by the Man in the Moon to help them stop Pitch and save the day.

Sunday, GO!, 8.30pm, M (2012) Tom Cruise (pictured) plays author Lee Child’s titular cop-turned-drifter who becomes part of the investigation when a former army sniper takes the rap for gunning down five innocent people. But as defence lawyer Rosamund Pike quickly discovers, Reacher may prove to be more trouble than he’s worth. Directed and adapted from the ninth Reacher novel One Shot by Oscar-winning writer Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects), the first movie outing for Child’s vigilante hero should do for Cruise what Taken did for Liam Neeson.
Saturday, PRIME7, 9.30pm, MA15+ (2016) Based on a true story, this gritty action flick recounts the 2012 attack on the US diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya, that left four Americans dead, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens (Matt Letscher), leaving it to a security team to make sense out of the chaos. In a reconstruction of the horrific 13 hours, the movie focuses on two CIA operatives caught in the battle – Tyrone Woods (James Badge Dale) and Jack Silva (John Krasinski, pictured).

Henry will enjoy some exciting money making opportunities during the next 12 months – not just for himself, but for a cause close to his heart that will benefit others. He should seek the advice of an older friend or family member if he is committing to anything that he cannot go back on. Henry is moving into a period of harmony, when effort is recognised and there’s a natural progression of important events. In his long standing relationships, he should listen carefully to avoid problems.
ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
Have a good look at your finances this month; if you’ve been neglecting them recently, it’s time to go over them with a fine-tooth comb. If you spot any discrepancies, you’ll be onto them like a cat pouncing on a mouse and won’t be happy until everything is resolved.
If you haven’t had much time for your friends recently, you’re now keen to get back in touch. Get out your diary and start booking some social events. If your social circle has dwindled recently, use the next four weeks as an opportunity to make some new friends.
Mercury squares Pluto until the 15th which indicates a disruptive phase is on the way at work. You might have to go back over old ground or redo a job you thought was sorted out ages ago. Sometimes obstacles are put in front of us to test our staying power.
Mercury squares Pluto until the 15th and short distance journeys are going to be disrupted due to roadworks or breakdowns. If you have to be somewhere on time be sure to allow extra travel time. Also mobiles and computers could act strangely. You are feeling more open and friendly.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG If there have been any rifts between you and a friend, take this opportunity to make a fresh start and you’ll be very glad you did. You will be a lot more confident and friendly enough to let others see your vulnerable and sensitive side.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
Mercury, the planet of communications, squares Pluto until the 15th placing the accent on relationships. Unfortunately misunderstandings are likely. However, patience and understanding will win the day. It’s important you don’t overload your schedule or take on more than you can comfortably handle.
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
Happy birthday, Taurus. During the coming year you’ll feel a lot more ebullient and forthcoming than you have for some time. You’ll want to take the lead in many different ways and will also have a surge of confidence, enabling you to forge ahead or enjoy the limelight. You may find it difficult to motivate yourself into achieving much; it could be that your get up has got up and gone or because you’re feeling down. You may have to do some clever acting if you’re dealing with someone who always expects you to perform.
Mercury squares Pluto until the 15th and there may be issues with technology so expect your internet service to go on the blink. Whilst this may be frustrating, it will be a test of patience as everything will be okay in the end. An unexpected invitation could surprise you.
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
Mercury squares Pluto until the 15th and although you are supposed to be incredibly patient, it doesn’t mean you’re immune to stress. You will be busy playing peacemaker but you won’t be able to keep this act up for long, or an explosion of volcanic proportions could occur.
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
Mercury squares Pluto until the 15th indicating that you and your partner need to sort out some important issues at a personal or business level. You’ll be able to get your ideas across to others easily and they’ll be happy to take action on your behalf.
Mercury squares Pluto until the 15th and indicates that you may find it hard to reach any kind of objective at work. Your status and standing could be undermined in some way, possibly because someone puts in a bad word about you at your place of work.

Heart-warming flick Academy Award-winner Charlize Theron stars in Tully, the brilliant new comedy-drama from the Academy Award-nominated director of Juno and Up in the Air. HOUSE-SITTING Nearly seven years ago I came back from an overseas holiday and had a few house-sitting gigs lined up. I haven’t rented since. I still pinch myself that I’ve been able to do it full-time for so long, and I’m very grateful that people trust me with their pets, pools and plants. I’ve looked after an indoor toilet-trained rabbit, hermit crabs and prized orchids.
My favourite things E-READER I start early at the ABC so I love reading in the afternoons after work. There’s nothing like the smell and feel of a paperback, but I’ve become a massive convert of the e-reader. It’s more convenient when travelling, you can purchase a book at any time, it has a built-in reading light, and you’ve always got a dictionary handy.
WATER I think my thermostat is broken! I don’t cope well with heat so, if it’s going to be hot, I need to be in the water – either along Newcastle’s amazing coastline or in the backyard pool that I’m looking after. On a hot summer day it’s my happy place.
Dan Cox
1233 ABC NEWCASTLE JOURNALIST AND TREASURE HUNTER PRESENTER
Dan started his journalism career as a teenager delivering newspapers around the suburbs of Newcastle. He grew up in a very medical family and became the “black sheep” when he chose to become a journalist. He’s worked in marketing and public relations for a local charity, and in 2008 he started working for ABC News as a broadcast journalist. This year he started hosting the popular “Treasure Hunter” program on 1233 ABC Newcastle on Saturdays from 10am. Apart from his day job, he’s a professional house-sitter, part-time wedding singer, fulltime red wine lover, avid traveller, amateur photographer (and a massive coffee snob). 66
TRAVEL Just like Susan Sontag, “I haven’t been everywhere yet but it’s on my list!” There’s nothing like heading off with a passport, a backpack and a good camera. I love other cultures, cuisines and meeting the locals. I’ve had some incredible adventures in Europe and the Americas, and most recently on safari in Africa. Where to next...?
DOGS I’ve loved dogs for as long as I can remember. My first family pet was a much-loved fox terrier called Toby. We’ve since had several breeds, from miniature chihuahuas to Australian kelpies. One of the joys of house-sitting is that I look after lots of dogs. I’ve got my top five – they know who they are!
