This week... From the editor There are so many ways to commemorate Anzac Day in the Hunter Region, short of travelling to the Australian War Memorial itself. While Anzac Day marks the anniversary of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps landing at Gallipoli during World War I, it’s also a time to remember those men and women who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping operations. There is no greater sacrifice than putting one’s own life on the line. In this, our Anzac Day 2018 special, you’ll find Commanding Officer of the 5th Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel Renée Kidson, on the front cover (with thanks to the Australian War Memorial and the Canberra Weekly team). Based in the capital, Lt. Col. Kidson travels frequently to the Hunter to train part-time engineer soldiers at the Adamstown and Singleton squadrons. She also has operational deployment experience in East Timor, leads Force Design at the Australian Defence Science and Technology Group, and holds no fewer than five degrees. Her story is on page 10. If you’re looking for your nearest Anzac Day service, you’ll find it in our two-page guide on pages 28 and 29. Lest we forget. - Georgia Osland

Ann Morgan surrounded by ash in her unit after a blaze tore through it on Easter Saturday.
Positive outlook after life of hard knocks She’s had more setbacks in her life than most could handle. Ann Morgan is a domestic violence survivor who remarried, rebuilt her life, and cared for her second husband prior to his death. Now, the 77-year-old has lost everything she owns after a fire tore through her Bayway Village unit in Fern Bay. “My granddaughter said to me: ‘Nan, you’re so resilient, I’ve never seen anybody bounce back like you do, but I wish they’d stop throwing you up against the wall,’” Mrs Morgan said. In the early hours of Easter Saturday, her neighbour was charging a battery when it exploded, burning his property to the ground in a matter of minutes before igniting her unit. Mrs Morgan said the reality of the situation had not yet sunk in. “When I rang triple zero, I said:
Welcome to your new home...
‘My neighbour’s house is on fire and mine is going to be next,’” she said. “I watched it [the unit] burn to the ground and I just felt numb. “[Then] I started to shake, I didn’t cry – I don’t think it’s hit me yet.” While Mrs Morgan was lucky to escape with her life, she lost all her disability aids. An inside walker, worth $500, was destroyed, as was the bathroom, which had recently been renovated so she could access it properly. The blaze also ruined an outside walker, a shopping trolley, and most of her medication. With building - but no contents - insurance, Mrs Morgan said it would be impossible for her to replace the items. “I bought the [unit] but I wasn’t moving into it for two months, so I just insured it because I had no contents [at the time],” she said. “I was on a widow’s pension
when I moved out and then went onto the old age pension, my only source of income, and I didn’t know that I was going to get burnt out.” Mrs Morgan said she felt “blessed” by the community’s response, with several residents digging deep to help her out financially. “I’ve found out who my friends are and my family – most of them are wonderful,” she said. “People, strangers really, have donated, so I feel really blessed.” Mrs Morgan’s insurance company has found her alternative accommodation for the time being, but she believes it will be at least three months before she’s back on her feet. If you’d like to help Mrs Morgan, a GoFundMe page has been set up. Visit gofundme.com/mum039sfire-recovery to donate. - Ben Murphy

news Council refuses rate reduction Maitland council has shot down Labor’s election promise to provide rate relief. A motion, brought forward by councillor Ben Whiting last week, called for the council to scale back a scheduled 7.25% rate increase for the next financial year. It proposed, instead, that year five of the Special Rate Variation (SRV), approved by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) in 2014, limit the increase to the rate peg of 2.3%. The motion cited stagnant wage growth over recent years and the associated pressure on household budgets as key reasons for this. It was estimated this would provide the average household with a saving of $77 and cost the city $3 million next year, which, the motion claimed, could be fixed through a halt in the council’s level of service across all areas and a delay in less urgent roadworks. However, in his response to the proposal, general manager David Evans advised it would ultimately amount to a revenue deficiency of $40 million in the council’s 10-year financial plan. “This raises implications for project delivery over our 10-year forecast for debt servicing and our
eligibility to borrow funds through the State Treasury Corporation borrowing facility,” he wrote. “The impact of not taking up the SRV increase for year five, therefore, is not limited to the 2018/19 financial year. “It raises, again, the long-term financial sustainability of council as a matter to be addressed in rating deliberations by this, or a future council, in subsequent financial years.” Mr Evans added that Maitland council’s level of unpaid rates had trended downward from 2.71% in 2013 to 2.05% in 2017. He noted the council revised and maintained policy provisions to help ratepayers experiencing financial hardship. During the 2017 election campaign, Labor pledged to revisit the SRV amid plans to offer a one-off rate reduction of about $100 per ratepayer. Labor’s mayoral candidate, Loretta Baker, pointed to soaring electricity prices as an example of how stretched household budgets had become. However, only Cr Baker and her fellow Labor councillors – Cr Whiting, Robert Aitchison, Henry Meskauskas and Don Ferris – voted for the rate reduction. - Ben Murphy
Operation to reduce car thefts Operation Bounce Back is in full swing in Lake Macquarie, in an effort to reduce the number of car thefts. The National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council initiative aims to raise awareness and reduce complacency when it comes to car thefts. In 2017, Lake Macquarie had the fourth-highest number of vehicle thefts out of the 130 local government areas in the state. Lake Macquarie council’s manager community planning, Wes Hain, said cars were one of the most common targets in home burglaries. “Simple things such as choosing your car park wisely, removing valuables from your vehicle and protecting your keys at home can help reduce the risk of your car being stolen,” he said. To safeguard your vehicle’s keys, keep them out of sight when you’re at home, and always lock your vehicle.

Hunter actress’ big break in Hollywood
Geraldine Viswanathan at the Blockers premiere in California earlier this month. Photo: Getty Images
Geraldine Viswanathan is living out her dream under the bright lights of Hollywood. The former Hunter School of Performing Arts student has played a breakout role in the blockbuster comedy Blockers. Viswanathan’s character, Kayla, must fend off her overprotective, emotional and sports-obsessed father, Mitchell (John Cena), after making a pact with her best friends, Julie (Kathryn Newton) and Sam (Gideon Adlon), to each lose their virginity on prom night. She said working alongside professional wrestler and actor, Cena, and other stars such as Leslie Mann was a “dream come true”. “I learnt so much by watching and working with them,” Viswanathan told Newcastle Weekly. “The younger cast – Kathryn, Gideon and I – became so close; we’re still best friends today.
“We were living in a hotel for three months, so it felt like camp. We hung out all the time and instantly got along.” Blockers was released in Australia late last month before its premiere in the USA on 6 April. Viswanathan, who first watched the movie with an audience at South by Southwest in Austin, Texas, said the reception had been unbelievable. “The audience was laughing so hard we couldn’t hear the next line,” she said. “I think people are responding to it because we haven’t had a blockbuster comedy for a while and Blockers is not only really funny, but really reflects this day and age. “It’s a contemporary fresh twist on something we’ve seen before, but only from the male perspective.” Viswanathan’s parents flew to Los Angeles for the film’s premiere. The 22-year-old said they had
been supportive of her young career, while she also expressed her love for her former high school. “I feel like doing drama and putting on my own little plays and sketches at that school is where my love for acting and writing really started,” she said. “My mum is a wonderful actress herself – she does some local theatre and television. “Dad’s also a total creative at heart and is so supportive – enough to encourage me to drop out of university to follow my dreams.” After filming for Blockers wrapped up, Viswanathan starred in a Netflix movie called Eggplant Emoji, produced by Ben Stiller, while she also shot a television show with Daniel Radcliffe and Steve Buscemi. It’s safe to say the past 12 months have been a whirlwind for the girl from Whitebridge. - Ben Murphy

cover story Born leader answers call of duty Lieutenant Colonel Renée Kidson answered the call of duty some 22 years ago. As an engineering student at university, she searched for a postgraduate job that would develop her leadership skills, personal character, and sense of community. She found it in the Australian Army Reserves. “The reasons I stay are a bit different to the reasons I enlisted,” Lt. Col. Kidson told Newcastle Weekly. “Every day I put this uniform on, it inspires me to become a better person. “There is no greater privilege.” Today, Lt. Col. Kidson serves part-time as the Commanding Officer of the 5th Engineer Regiment, which spans from the Hunter Region to Canberra. She is one of very few female engineer officers, and the first to command this regiment. It’s her responsibility to help train part-time engineer soldiers for deployment operations and to serve the Australian community in times of need, having served in East Timor herself from 2011 to 2012.
With squadrons at Adamstown and Singleton, Lt. Col. Kidson has racked up quite a few “frequent flyer” miles travelling at least once a week between Canberra, where she is based, and the Hunter. “There’s strong support for Defence in the [Hunter] region, and a strong military history, so it’s very important to our regiment,” she said. Lt. Col. Kidson will again return to the Hunter on Anzac Day (Wednesday 25 April), to give an address at Charlestown Lions Club’s 11am service at Charlestown Lions Park. The 5th Engineer Regiment sends catafalque parties to no fewer than 13 Anzac Day services – to pay tribute to all of those who have served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations – from the Hunter to Penrith to Cooma. Lt. Col. Kidson is looking forward to giving her first Charlestown address as Commanding Officer. “This is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to the Australian community,” she said. Airshow to take off in Cessnock
Sponsorships soar for initiatives Community events and organisations will benefit from a record windfall this year through Newcastle council’s grants and sponsorships program. A funding pool of $560,000 has been allocated to help activate public places, enhance community wellbeing and strengthen the city’s reputation as a tourism destination. For the first time, applications are being taken online only, via the SmartyGrants platform. Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said this was designed to streamline the application process. Community place-making grants of up to $4,000 will be offered for community-driven activations and activities. This stream of funding has been revamped this year, and combines the former community assistance and place-making programs. Event sponsorships will also be provided across five categories: community events (up to $5,000), major community events (up to $15,000), major destination events (up to $20,000), commercial events (up to $10,000), and business events (up to $5,000). The Australian Bowl-Riding Championships, Newcastle Toy Run and the Light Up Newcastle Lantern
The Australian Bowl-Riding Championships was one of several events funded in Newcastle in 2017.
Walk were among the events the council sponsored in the last round of funding. “Our events sponsorship program is always the most hotly-contested, with so many fantastic events, both big and small, showcasing our city,” Cr Nelmes said. Economic development sponsorships of up to $20,000 each are also available, with the council seeking organisations aligned with its Economic Development Strategy to support business growth and employment. Applications are free, and close on Monday 7 May. Go to newcastle.smartygrants.com.au to apply.
AirVenture Australia’s premier airshow will land in Cessnock for the first time this September. The three-day event at Cessnock Airport is expected to attract about 400 aircraft and a crowd of up to 10,000 people. It will feature trade displays and educational seminars, as well as an airshow on the Saturday afternoon. Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said he hoped to see the exciting event added to the annual calendar. “We’ve never hosted anything like this before; it will not only attract more visitors to our region, but also be a great event for local residents to experience,” he said. “It’s wonderful to attract another fantastic event to our region and no doubt it will provide a healthy injection into our local economy.” The event will take place from 20 to 22 September. Visit airventureaustralia.com.au for more information.

Clubs closer to life-saving device
Pamper day leaves lasting impression The difference Bald & Beautiful Day makes to men and women diagnosed with or recovering from cancer extends well beyond the four-hour annual event. You only have to look as far as organising committee member Julie Harris. According to event founder Judith Taylor, Ms Harris attended her first Bald & Beautiful Day at Wests New Lambton last year as a cancer survivor. “She enjoyed herself so much that she wanted to be a part of it,” Ms Taylor said. “She’s now on the planning committee helping to organise [the event]. “It’s a great feeling because that’s the essence of Bald & Beautiful Day; it’s the environment of giving.” Men and women are invited to take time out, kick their feet up and be pampered by up to 100 volunteers, with massages, manicures and pedicures, facials, makeup and hair styles. The music, fun and laughter is designed to take their minds off cancer, if only for a day.
Men and women diagnosed with or recovering from cancer can participate in Bald & Beautiful Day.
This year, the event will be held on Wednesday 2 May from 10am to 2pm in the Starlight Room at Wests New Lambton, and will feature entertainment, dancing, tai chi, craft, and a men’s den. Tickets are $25 for guests and carers, and bookings are essential. Phone John on 4963 1992 or email info@baldandbeautiful.org.au See baldandbeautiful.org.au for more information. - Georgia Osland
Accommodation options for ageing Australians Take advantage of our free seminar at our offices on Thursday 26 April at 5.30pm
Sporting clubs across the Hunter Region have been awarded funds to help purchase life-saving defibrillators. The successful organisations applied for a grant under the first round of the state government’s Local Sport Defibrillation Program. There were five successful recipients in Lake Macquarie, seven each in Newcastle and Maitland, four in Cessnock and two in Port Stephens. Adamstown Rosebud Football Club was one of the organisations that received a grant in the Newcastle local government area. Club president Andrew Licata said a defibrillator could one day save a life at Adamstown Oval. “Defibrillators are an important piece of emergency equipment that can significantly improve survival rates from a sudden cardiac arrest and are a vital resource in developing a safe and resilient football environment,” he said. The government’s initiative will see more than 2,500 defibrillators installed at community facilities statewide over the next four years at a cost of $4 million.
With housing and accommodation options becoming more diverse, Australia’s ageing population are faced with more questions than ever before. Monique Smiles will highlight the risks, benefits and effects on your estate when considering a range of differing options such as:

news Pole position for ceremony The flagpole at Allambee Park, Valentine has been moved from the top end of the park closer to the centre. A rededication ceremony to celebrate the flagpole’s 30th anniversary was held on Tuesday, ahead of Anzac Day. New plaques were added to the flagpole to officially mark the rededication. In attendance was Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser, as well as members of the Valentine Lions Club and the community.
Housing for rail corridor Not-for-profit provider Evolve Housing has been chosen to build 30 affordable housing units on Newcastle’s former heavy rail corridor. The rental units will be available to key workers, such as police, nurses and teachers. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said it was a milestone in the city’s revitalisation. “Evolve Housing has been successful and has committed to
delivering 30 affordable rental housing units, which includes three specialist disability accommodation dwellings, giving more people greater access to a thriving city centre,” he said. The Hunter Development Corporation (HDC) released expressions of interest late last year for the Merewether Street site, which incorporated 1,600 square metres of former rail corridor land adjacent to Newcastle Museum. Construction is planned to start in December.

Funding to support the arts
Donations assist Cambodia project It all began in Wallsend. Mia Higgins, her sister, and a friend from school decided to create and sell 200 pet rocks and bookmarks as part of an Australia for Cambodia fundraiser in January 2017. The donations helped to buy a water pump and filter, as well as a toilet, for the remote village of Romdoul in Cambodia. Now, 10-year-old Mia has reignited her campaign by collecting and cashing in empty cans. Inspired by her school teacher’s own efforts to fundraise for the village, Mia joined forces with her grandmother, Trudie Sherborne, and started collecting cans from her grandfather’s workplace and local supermarkets. “I was thinking about how much stuff we have here, and how much stuff they don’t have, and we raised a lot of money but I just thought it wasn’t enough,” Mia says. “I wanted to do more; I was inspired by my teacher and seeing the photos of the village made me feel sad that [the children in the village] weren’t getting an equal amount to us.”

The Commercial Hotel Boolaroo and the Lake Macquarie Tavern have already pledged to donate their cans to the project, while other hotels are being encouraged to do the same. Mia’s original goal was to raise $1,000 this year but, as of last week, she had already surpassed the mark. A donation as little as $50 will provide a uniform, a hot meal every day, and a pair of shoes for one child. Since 2013, Australia for Cambodia has provided the village of Romdoul with a three-room brick school building, toilets, mosquito nets, bio-sand water filters, and sporting equipment and stationary. To pledge your cans, contact AHA Newcastle Hotels representative Nikki Taylor on 0435 791 363.
Newcastle Studio Potters will receive a $15,000 state government grant to replace two aged and unreliable kilns. The money, allocated through the Arts & Cultural Development Program, will fund two new Woodrow kilns, including shelving and dedicated ventilation, with the aim of improving and increasing access to ceramic art equipment, workshop amenity and health and safety. “Newcastle Studio Potters is a vital part of the arts community in our area, and this funding will encourage it to go from strength to strength,” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said. “Arts funding is not only important for the continued cultural vibrancy in Newcastle, but also has economic spinoffs, creating employment and a place where people want to live.” Newcastle Studio Potters is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

sport Simmons flying high in playoffs Jets heap misery on Mariners Hunter product Ben Simmons has made a flying start to his first postseason in the NBA. The Philadelphia 76ers’ star fell just short of a triple double in a 130103 first-round, game-one blowout against the Miami Heat on Sunday. Simmons, in his playoff debut, recorded an impressive stat line of 17 points, 14 assists and nine rebounds as Philadelphia claimed its first playoff victory since 2012. He then backed that up with a team-high 24 points to go with eight assists and nine rebounds on Tuesday. However, an inspired performance by veteran Dwyane Wade, who finished with 28 points off the bench, saw Miami level the best-of-seven series at 1-all with a 113-103 win. Game three will be played in Miami on Friday 20 April.

The Newcastle Jets bounced back to form with a ruthless 8-2 thumping of dismal rivals Central Coast Mariners on Saturday night. Teenager Riley McGree brought his shooting boots to Central Coast Stadium, bagging a hat-trick, while striker Roy O’Donovan grabbed a double against his old club. Further goals to Joey Champness, Dimi Petratos and Lachlan Jackson heaped misery on the Central Coast, with the recordbreaking win handing the Mariners the wooden spoon for the 2017/18 A-League season. Newcastle had lost three matches in a row prior to the clash. The elimination finals kick off this weekend. In week two, champions Sydney FC and the second-placed Jets will play the lowest-ranked and highest-ranked winners from the elimination finals respectively.

Cancer recovery centre opens Australia’s first dedicated not‑for‑profit cancer exercise recovery centre has opened in Warabrook. The Kaden Centre was founded by Windella resident and three‑ time cancer survivor Suzanne Clark‑Pitrolo. Keenly aware of the importance and benefits of exercise, and with all kinds of medical specialists encouraging her to workout, Mrs Clark‑Pitrolo could not find a gym or exercise facility that was able to give her the support, information and programs she needed. So, with the help of son‑in‑ law and physiotherapist, Loukas Nadiotis, she developed an exercise program that was safe for her. The program aimed to build bone density and regain muscle
strength, rather than targeting weight loss. From this, stemmed the idea of creating an exercise centre to help others who face the same problems in cancer treatment and survival. “When I had cancer, I felt as though I didn’t have control over anything; I felt powerless,” Mrs Clark‑Pitrolo said. “Everyone was making decisions for me and the doctor spoke to the other person in the room rather than to me. “Then I realised exercise and diet were the two areas I could control, and taking control of these two important areas would increase the chances of a positive outcome in my recovery.” The name for the centre, Kaden, means ‘fighter’ in Gaelic.
Mrs Clark‑Pitrolo said she wanted to empower people through all stages of their journey by offering targeted exercise programs, oncology massage, mindfulness yoga classes, and a library and sitting area. “We want to create a supportive community,” she said. “Most people don’t want to go back to hospital when they’ve finished their chemo. “That’s where we come in. We don’t have the word ‘cancer’ on the door; we are about empowerment, action and support.” The Kaden Centre is open to anyone who is living with a chronic disease. Visit kadencentre.org.au or phone 0447 462 050 for more information.

LACOR FLOAT CENTRE With up to 400 kilograms of Epsom salts in each float tank, you are immersed in an environment so buoyant that you float effortlessly and experience a deep state of relaxation and meditation. This relaxation is supplemented by the full-body absorption of magnesium from the water – perfect for recovery from muscle tension, stress and fatigue. A: 6/8 Hall Street, Newcastle West T: 0403 687 696 W: lacornewcastle.com.au
WHAT IS FLOATING? This form of therapy involves lying in a specifically designed tank that is filled with water warmed to your skin temperature. Dissolved in the water is up to 400kgs of Epsom salts. This extremely dense solution enables people of all body types to float effortlessly and escape the pull of gravity. Here at Lacor Float Centre we use the Apollo tank, which is perfectly designed to eliminate all outside distractions such as sight, sound, tactile sensations and, of course, gravity. Once you are settled in the tank, it is virtually impossible to distinguish between parts of the body that are in contact with the water and those that aren’t, in effect “tricking” the brain into believing that you are floating freely in mid-air. What happens when you take away all external stimulation? Your body and your mind go into a blissful meditative state which is perfect for alleviating symptoms of stress, anxiety and muscle soreness.

Clinic’s program offers hope to isolated people Lakeside Clinic Day Program Unit is a group psychotherapy service based at Warners Bay Private Hospital.
T
he unit is dedicated to providing a safe and supportive environment while delivering best-practice psychiatric care and treatment for consumers. It offers a range of different group therapy programs, including: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Loss and Change (based on the Seasons of Change model), Men’s Emotion Regulation, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy, Over-65s (addressing issues such as managing change, anxiety, relationships and loss and grief), Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Psychodynamic Therapy, and Relapse Prevention. Lakeside Clinic Day Programs Manager Jess Westcott said group therapy was an opportunity for people to regain a sense of hope. “People with mental health difficulties can often feel lonely and isolated,” she said. “These groups have a healing nature in that
our group members are around other people who genuinely care, so they walk away with a really hopeful experience.” Ms Westcott said she understood it could be daunting to come and speak with a group. However, she believed many people ended up feeling more connected. “We have an interview process with people to match them into the appropriate group, so we make it more relatable that way,” she said. “It can be nerve-wracking or anxietyprovoking to do something like come and be a part of a group, but many people have walked away wanting to do another group.” Referrals for the Day Program Unit are accepted from either a GP or Psychiatrist. Lakeside Clinic accepts both private (those with appropriate health fund cover, workers compensation or Defence funding), and selffunded clients. The clinic is part of Warners Bay Private Hospital, which has an excellent reputation in the wider Newcastle community.
Group therapy programs can help people with mental health difficulties to feel more connected.

Beauty queen Baker After being forced to graciously withdraw from last year’s NYX Cosmetics FACE Awards in Australia, Jewells makeup artist Lizzie Baker is back, more determined than ever. The 27-year-old self-taught body paint and special effects artist has again landed in the top 30 artists in Australia, vying for the title of Beauty Blogger of the Year plus a $10,000 cash prize and a trip to Los Angeles to watch the American FACE Awards. Baker qualified last year, only to lose all of her footage when her camera broke just 24 hours outside of entry deadline
for the fi rst challenge. “I was devastated,” Baker told Newcastle Weekly. “It broke my heart. The look I was going for took four hours to create and five hours to upload, and I’d already lost it three times because my computer kept crashing.” Now, Baker is concocting a look for the fi rst challenge of 2018 – and she’s since upgraded her tech. She’s exploring realism; things like skulls and animals. Baker originally discovered her talent in cartoon drawings. As a teen who barely wore any makeup, let alone knew

her way around a brush, Baker believed she was destined to become a cartoonist. Then, when her high-school friends started investing in quality makeup, Baker took an interest in it. She saved up for a makeup course with the master himself, Napoleon Perdis. That was the beginning

of Baker’s love affair with makeup artistry. Since then, she’s branched out to body paint and special effects – both of which she has learnt through YouTube tutorials. Should she win the FACE Awards, Baker dreams of developing her skills through further training, and eventually opening her own makeup artistry school. The Australian FACE Awards fi nale will be held on 8 July in Melbourne, where six fi nalists will be flown for a live show. Follow Lizzie Baker on Instagram, @iamlizziebaker

This last summer has proven that, although current garden designs exclude Australian natives, they have survived. Perhaps it is time to forget the minimalistic concept and replant hardy, bird-attractive plants, which can create a modern garden. A good example are the native grasses that create a wonderful border, in front of a row of lillypillies, which are great for screening. They grow quickly and are ideal for hedging. Planting larger natives such as eucalypts has lost favour because of their size and the results of storm damage when large trees are planted too close to homes. From my experience, if a tree grows 10 to 15 metres tall, that can be an indicator of root spread. A lovely specimen tree, native

Shape the westringia into balls for a formal look. When my current home was built, its architectural design didn’t encourage native planting, but I chose the western boundary to plant a mixture of grevilleas – great for picking, and the native birds love them. Mix and match is the name of the game, keeping in mind the height as some grevilleas can be short. I planted Honey Gem, Moonlight, Misty Pink and Sandra Gordon.

• Prepare gardens to plant poppies on Anzac Day (Wednesday 25 April). Dig in poultry manure as poppies like an alkaline pH. • Begin disbudding Camellia japonicas if there are more than two or three buds in a cluster. This allows the blooms to open. • Until last weekend, I thought army grub had finished decimating lawns – but they are back. Keep applying a product to eliminate them. Apply a light top-dress to brown areas and water Green Flourish over damaged grass to stimulate root growth.

PICK OF THE WEEK 10 Cloverfield Lane Saturday, PRIME7, 9.30pm, M (2016) The “blood relative” of Cloverfield (2008), this flick doesn’t feature a big, bad, computergenerated monster. John Goodman inhabits the role of baddie in this creepy tale, taking place mostly in an underground bunker after a woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Scott Pilgrim vs The World, pictured) wakes after a car accident in the confined space, with two men present. Goodman insists he saved her life after a chemical attack ravaged Earth, and they are the only survivors.

Fast & Furious 7 Sunday, 9GO!, 8.30pm, M (2015) Vin Diesel might have gotten a little carried away when he declared Fast & Furious 7 would clean up at the Academy Awards, including Best Picture, “unless the Oscars don’t want to be relevant ever”. For fans, this is the final chance to see Paul Walker (pictured) as Brian O’Conner after the actor was tragically killed in a 2013 car accident during production of the film. Fans of the series will know what to expect: fast cars, hot women, cartoonish bad guys and Vin Diesel getting emotional while swigging a beer on a porch.
Thursday, 7MATE, 8.30pm, M (2004) Will Smith (pictured) plays Chicago cop Del Spooner in this thriller set in 2035, directed by Australian Alex Proyas. When the inventor (James Cromwell) of the robots that dominate the city is found dead (allegedly suicide), Spooner is put on the case. He believes rogue machines might be to blame and calls on robotics whiz Bridget Moynahan to help him find out. Smith is at his wisecracking best and the flashy production design and effects round off a thriller with more brains than you might expect.

Opposing trends and a hint of restlessness emerge in Miranda’s working life. If Miranda is tempted to make a change or start something new, she should trust her instincts but tread carefully. There may be some tricky moments involving money and property, perhaps an investment or longer term plan. Whilst she should be cautious, she will find that some wise advice comes from an older person who will be worth listening to. Her romantic life sparkles this year.
ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
Aries is a fire sign and ruled by energetic Mars, so when Mercury squares powerful Pluto it gives you the opportunity to transform unnecessary aspects of your life and make them better. The focus will be on sorting out financial affairs and joint assets. The devil is in the detail.
When it comes to issues with a flatmate or family member, you know that sometimes you can come on a bit too strong but there is a fine line between being diplomatic and being a doormat. Disruptions to travel plans and miscommunications with others are likely.
If you have any health issues that require a second opinion, you’ll find plenty of people willing to guide you. Stress could be an issue both at work and at home. Singles, separating the wheat from the chaff is something you do instinctively when it comes to potential suitors.
Mars is in Capricorn and you and
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
The Sun continues to speed its way through Aries and daily life will be very busy for you. You’ve probably taken on a little too much, but knowing you, you’ll handle it very well. From 16 April, communications with your partner will improve owing to passionate Venus in Taurus.
Raising a family causes all manner of issues. One of the kids may come down with the snuffles and although you want to put them first, you can’t help yearning for the cut and thrust of your career. Do your best to prioritise and don’t overload your schedule.
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
If you have an allergy or symptoms that are ongoing you should not worry or procrastinate, but get yourself to a doctor or specialist straight away. It is important that you don’t overload your schedule or take on more than you can comfortably handle.
It might feel like colleagues have
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
Venus is in your own sign from the 26th of April and one colleague or acquaintance seems to be making a special effort to cultivate your friendship. You have absolutely nothing to lose by letting this relationship develop. Just take things one step at a time.
Your communication skills are still being put to the test this week, so be certain to engage your brain before you open your mouth. Everything you say is likely to come out wrong. Also don’t be surprised if ex partners are suddenly back in touch. Tread carefully.
You must take responsibility for your own decisions. With Venus preparing to move into Gemini from the 26th, whether you have been warming up a new relationship or re-heating an old one, the planets will help you to get things moving in the right direction.

been letting you down lately. Even those on whom you can usually depend to get their job done efficiently could be uncooperative or even off sick just when you need them most.
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR Venus is in a favourable aspect to Neptune, making you feel especially passionate for much of April. It could be romance, sport or politics that gets you all fired up. You are feeling much more open, friendly and confident enough to let others see your more vulnerable side.

My favourite things ACAI BOwLS I love enjoying an Açai bowl on a summer’s day.
SPORT I have been competing and training all my life, whether it be Nippers, swimming or triathlon. It’s my happy place. I just love sport and keeping fit and healthy.
Lauren Parker
2018 COMMONwEALTH GAMES MEDALLIST
Lauren Parker grew up in Caves Beach and, along with joining Nippers at the local surf club, was a swim champion at state and national level. At the age of 19, she turned her attention to triathlons and was competing around the world as an elite athlete. Then, on 18 April 2017, her life changed in an instant. She was on a training ride two weeks out from competing in Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie when both her tyres blew out and she was thrown into the guard rail, sustaining multiple injuries and spinal cord damage. She was told that she had 0 to 1% chance of ever walking again. But, with help from family and friends, she began to channel positive thoughts and set new goals. Lauren was chosen for the Australian paratriathlon team to compete at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. She went on to claim the Hunter’s first medal of the Games – a bronze. 58
COFFEE Love my coffee. It gets me going in the morning.
MUSIC Keith Urban is my favourite artist. I also love to play guitar and sing. Music keeps me balanced and helps me focus on happier thoughts.
MALLORCA I’ve spent the past three years training in Mallorca for four months at a time, enjoying the Mallorca summer and swimming in the Mediterranean. It is definitely my second home and I have come to love the island.
