thursday 22 March 2018

This week... From the editor Today marks one year since I took up post as editor. How do you like my celebratory new look? I remember, when I first stepped up to my new role after working here as a journalist for just shy of 12 months, Newcastle Weekly's founder and publisher, Nick Samaras, said to me, "You won't recognise yourself in a year's time." It's true. This past year has tried and tested me more than I thought possible. And yet, here I am, still smiling – nay, thriving! In the words of the great Nelson Mandela: "It always seems impossible until it's done." Have you ever taken a leap of faith and, in hindsight, realised it wasn't that much of a stretch to think that maybe, just maybe, you had the talent and the drive to pull it off? Self-doubt is part and parcel of the human condition, I suppose. All you need to do is have a little faith (and be prepared to put in the hard yards). Of course, I wouldn't be where I am today without the support of my wonderful colleagues. And a big 'thank you' to you, dear readers, for sharing this journey with me. Let's continue, shall we? P.S. Catch me on FM 97.3 from 11am on Monday 26 March, talking Lake Mac Life with Martine Paterson. - Georgia Osland

news Ditch the plastic; go green instead The difficulty of remembering to take reusable shopping bags to the supermarket is not lost on Steve Dewar. It’s a conundrum we’ve all faced: we’ve arrived at the supermarket, only to find we’ve left our green bags in the car boot, or worse still, at home. The most convenient solution? Plastic bags. But Mr Dewar, a board member on the Lake Macquarie Sustainable Neighbourhood Alliance, warns that even ‘biodegradable’ bags take 30 to 40 years to break down. “Even then, they break down into smaller pieces of plastic, which get caught up in our waterways,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “Reusable cloth bags are the best solution.” New South Wales is the only Australian state or territory yet to implement a plastic-bag ban. However, from 1 July, supermarket giants Coles and Woolworths will phase out lightweight, single-use plastic bags and introduce more durable, reusable plastic bags for 15 cents each. Or, shoppers can bring their own. To help people make this transition, the sustainable neighbourhood alliance is hosting a

series of educational booths across Lake Macquarie in the lead-up to Easter. The alliance will be handing out hooks to place in the kitchen or garage – so the forgetful Freds and Fionas among us remember to take their reusable bags with them – as well as reusable cloth bags. Passersby can also learn about the damage plastic bags do to the marine environment, and Upcycle Newcastle will be on hand at three of the five venues to show people how to make their own reusable bags from recycled t-shirts. “We’re trying to prepare customers [for the switch], as a lot of smaller places, like bottle-os, should follow suit,” Mr Dewar says. It’s just one of the educational campaigns developed by the alliance to inch the community that bit closer to a sustainable lifestyle. Mr Dewar says the alliance has been working on a “swap bin” concept in supermarkets, whereby shoppers who have been “caught out” with no bags can borrow a reusable bag from a communal bin, and bring back two next time they shop. It’s already in place at IGA Blackalls Park and Boolaroo, as well as two local chemists in Toronto.

Educational booths will be set up at Toronto Town Square on Thursday 22 March (today); Stockland Glendale on Saturday 24 March; Belmont Citi Centre on Tuesday 27 March; Morisset Town Square on Wednesday 28 March; and Charlestown Square on Thursday 29 March. Each booth will be open from 3pm to 6pm, except Glendale, which will run from 9am to 12pm. Upcycle Newcastle will join the alliance in Glendale, Belmont and Charlestown. news Community’s delight at Belmont Baths upgrade It was once a “hub of summer activity” as hordes of people and beach umbrellas stretched along the sandy foreshore. Now, after years of rallying, the Belmont community’s much-loved swimming spot is one step closer to returning to its pre-1980s heyday. The state government has contributed $432,422 towards an upgrade of the Belmont Baths, with construction expected to start in October. The project is set to include a new 70-metre long jetty and 45-metre wide protected swimming enclosure to replace the finger jetty destroyed in the 2015 super storm, as well as a fullyaccessible, modern amenities block and ramp. Belmont and District Residents’ Action Group president, Robin Gordon, says she’s delighted the baths will be restored. “It is going to be great to have a safe space to swim away from the sharks and it’ll be fantastic to have new dressing sheds,” she says. “[The baths] were built in the 1940s and last brought down in the 1980s. “It was a hub of summer activity back then, and we hope that the upgrade will not

only serve the local people, who expect to be able to swim in this beautiful lake, but also help it become a great tourist attraction. “There’s talk of having an over-50s swimming club [at the baths], plus exercise classes, and handicapped people will come here for activities – it’ll be used by everyone.” In April 2017, Lake Macquarie council

voted to rebuild the baths after a sustained push by the local community. Mrs Gordon says the “people really spoke” through rallies, letters, petitions, and face-to-face meetings. The tender for the baths and amenities block is expected to go out early next month. - Ben Murphy

news Clinical trial for prostate cancer drug A new drug that may extend the lives of terminally-ill cancer patients is being trialled in the Newcastle region – one of only five sites across the country. The clinical trial, at Genesis Cancer Care Newcastle, will investigate whether the drug NOX66 can make cancer cells respond more effectively to palliative radiotherapy treatment. This is a widely-used treatment for symptoms of terminal prostate cancer. Genesis Cancer Care Newcastle radiation oncologist, Dr Anne Capp, is leading the clinical trial. She says the drug, if proven effective, will give prostate cancer patients improved quality of life, allowing them to spend more time with family and friends. “This drug, in combination with radiotherapy treatment, aims to lessen the symptoms and reduce the size of the tumour for end-stage prostate cancer patients,” Dr Capp says. “We are also investigating whether the drug also shrinks tumours at other sites in the body. “We would encourage patients or

.

8

doctors who have patients with stage four prostate cancer to seek further information about this trial.” The drug is based on Genistein, a naturally-occurring plant hormone, which can be found in a number of plants including soybeans, lupins, and fava beans. The study, managed by the Trans Tasman Radiation Oncology Group, will go for 12 months, consisting of 24 weeks of treatment and monitoring for patients. Apart from Newcastle, four other centres – in Sydney, Orange, Tamworth and the Gold Coast – will take part in the trial. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, prostate cancer was the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia in 2013. Last year, it was the second most common cause of male cancer deaths, while one in seven men were estimated to be at risk of developing the illness by the age of 85. In 2018, it is predicted that 17,729 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed across Australia.

Regatta sails to fundraising feat This year’s Heaven Can Wait Charity Sailing Regatta in Lake Macquarie raised a record $44,000 for Cancer Council NSW. The annual event, held from 24 to 25 February, saw 59 boats line-up for the One Lap Dash, with competitors including the likes of Olympic gold medallists Nathan Outteridge and Iain Jensen. Of the 59 starters, 19 boats went on to complete the 12-Hour Challenge, while 15 boats carried on to do the 24-Hour Endurance Race. The gun boat in the 24Hour category was Austral, sailed by Peter Mayo, covering 120 nautical miles. The Heaven Can Wait Charity Sailing Regatta funds the Home Help Program in the Hunter, overseen by Cancer Council NSW. It provides domestic assistance to people recovering from cancer and terminal cancer patients who, because of their illness, are unable to perform many day-to-day duties at home.

Newcastle’s Labor MPs have again called on the state government to fix the city’s bus timetable. Hundreds of commuters attended a public rally at Gregson Park, Hamilton, on Sunday. The rally was part of Labor’s push for NSW Transport Minister, Andrew Constance, to conduct a detailed, transparent and independent review of the timetable, publish the terms of

reference for the review, and guarantee public consultation. The opposition claims the new bus routes and timetabling has resulted in longer journey times, poorer connectivity, a more inconvenient service, cuts to services, and reduced operating hours. A debate will now take place in NSW Parliament on 12 April after a petition attracted more than 20,000 signatures.

Honeysuckle works draw near Crucial seawall works are set to start along Honeysuckle’s waterfront. Hunter Development Corporation (HDC) chief executive Michael Cassel says the works, expected to take about five months, will see 250 metres of shoreline repaired and built for the future. “We know that locals enjoy walking along the popular

promenade and that cyclists use it as a key transport route, so we hope that improvements will only make it more attractive and more inviting for people to use,” he says. Mr Cassel says HDC will ramp up its efforts to activate public spaces over the next two years amid plans to link the Honeysuckle promenade with Bathers Way.

news Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle president, Jill Maclachlan, centre, helps Swansea Men’s Shed members Mark Jarman, Wayne Salmon, Stephen Dunn and Max Cameron load the play bench onto a trailer. Photo: Peter Stoop

Many hands make light work What started as a simple idea to help a Lake Macquarie women’s refuge has since grown to involve the whole community. The Zonta Club of Hunter Newcastle is heading a project to transform a local refuge’s backyard into a creative play space for

children in need. The seed started with club president, Jill Maclachlan. “We’re a club that’s very interested in supporting women affected by domestic violence, and it is a big issue in the Hunter Region,” Mrs Maclachlan told

Newcastle Weekly. “When I saw this refuge’s backyard, it was very uninspiring, so, I put it to the board and the members voted to allocate $3,000 to the project.” This spurred a chain reaction. The Downer Group, which is delivering Newcastle’s light rail infrastructure, caught wind of the project, and staff chose to donate $320 from their own pockets. The construction company then bolstered this figure with a further $500, bringing the total donation to $820. Over the past few weeks, Zonta has used this money to buy brightly-coloured tables and chairs, a water play table, garden tools, a wheelbarrow, and materials to install garden beds for the children to grow vegetables.

Swansea Men’s Shed then stepped in to build a play bench, which was transported to the refuge last week. With the original $3,000 untouched, Zonta can now invest in a shade sail to cover the revamped backyard, with which Swansea Lions Club has expressed interest in helping to set up. “To combine with the men’s shed and Downer is quite a coup for us,” Mrs Maclachlan said of Zonta, which strives to empower women through advocacy and service. “It is quite a success story for us working with business and other volunteer groups for the benefit of those disadvantaged women in our community.” The project is expected to wrap up by mid-April. - Georgia Osland

news Maitland to recognise history They say you need to know the past to understand the present. With this in mind, Maitland will celebrate the city’s growth and diversity over the past 200 years. In 1818, eleven men and one woman were granted possession of the river flats between Pitnacree and Oakhampton. It was the beginning of the city of Maitland – once the manufacturing and commercial hub of the northern inland; and the educational and cultural centre of northern NSW. The city’s creation caused the destruction of local Aboriginal society and culture, their firestickmanaged wooded grasslands, riverside wetlands, and rainforest and associated fauna. Maitland 200 Years committee member Janece McDonald says a series of events will recognise the

town’s history and development. “The first permanent white settlement happened in 1818 – it wasn’t called Maitland then,” she says. “The idea was to acknowledge the first 12 people who probably started Maitland. “But, while acknowledging them, also recognising what came before them, and then celebrating all the groups that have since arrived from all over the world.” Maitland 200 Years events are set to kick off on 20 April with a walk from Brough and Grossman House along the historic Church Street. During the walk, there will be a number of vignettes by the Maitland Repertory Theatre as its members narrate true tales of action, scandal – even murder. In July, the Mindaribba Local

Maitland 200 Years committee members Tom Skelding, Sandy Earle, Ruth King, Tara Dever, Maree Farrelly and Peter Hogan share a laugh near the riverbank.

Aboriginal Land Council will lead NAIDOC Week celebrations, while other events include a Looking Back 200 Years exhibition at Tocal from 7 to 9 September. The series is then expected to wrap up with a Community Heritage Day on 16 September at Maitland Park.

The Maitland 200 Years committee is made up of people who can offer a wide perspective on the city’s past, including Aboriginal and nonAboriginal people, history groups and rotary clubs, a clothing museum, and a choir. - Ben Murphy

news Equipment eases care concerns Australia’s first dedicated loan pool of medical equipment has been established in the Hunter Region, offering families the choice to provide “end-of-life care” for seriously-ill children in the comfort of their own home. The Nicholas Trust, Hunter New England Health and the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation have worked together to set up One Less Worry, which provides devices such as oxygen tanks, special medical mattresses, wheelchairs, and pulse readers. It will help close the gap for up to 400 children with cancer, a genetic disorder, neurological disorder, heart or lung condition, or other serious illness, across the Hunter, Mid North Coast and New England areas. Families can access One Less Worry’s equipment loan pool to gain out-of-hospital support care for their child. This means they will have the choice to spend their last days at home where possible. The Nicholas Trust founder, Jenny Butters, learned there was a dire need for special paediatric palliative care facilities and services

through her own family’s personal experience. Her son, Nicholas, was diagnosed with a brain tumour and received ongoing medical treatment for nine years before succumbing to the illness in 2004. “During Nicholas’ final days in hospital we were in a busy children’s hospital ward,” Ms Butters says. “While our world was falling apart, we could hear all the noises of a busy paediatric ward – the laughs, good news being given to other parents, and their relief that followed. “It was a really long, difficult time. “It’s my hope that One Less Worry will mean that other families in the same situation as us will have the choice as to where they spend their final days with their child.” While there’s been significant improvements in palliative care services and facilities for children over the past decade, Ms Butters says these have focused on providing for children in hospital. Now, thanks to a $77,000 Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation grant, One

Palliative care nurse Amy with 10-year-old Braith and his mother Kellie Wall, of Medowie.

Less Worry can offer support to families when they need it. “We have enabled end-of-life care to occur in the home,” Ms Butters says. More than a dozen families have accessed the equipment since the loan pool’s establishment last October.

Social enterprise The Grateful has finally found a place to call home. The pay-it-forward initiative, which Newcastle Weekly first reported on in February 2017, now has a bricks-and-mortar shopfront in Carrington. Since Jessica Shuwalow, Gemma McBurnie and Amee Duncan founded The Grateful 15 months ago, more than 1,000 flower bouquets have been paid forward to John Hunter Hospital and Ronald McDonald House. For every bouquet bought, another is donated.

The new shop, labelled The Grateful Boutique, sells clothing, gifts, homewares and flowers – still with the same, do-good mission. For every item bought, a portion of the profit is used to donate a similar item to someone in need on the customer’s behalf. This includes helping to fund self-defense classes for domestic violence victims, coordinated by Got Your Back Sista. The Grateful Boutique is located at 79 Young Street, Carrington. news Shave to support CanTeen When Brittany Pinder’s mother passed away from bowel cancer 12 months ago, CanTeen was there to support her. The Hunter Christian School student has since been determined to give back to the not-for-profit organisation. So, she organised a head shave at the Mayfield-based school last week as part of her fundraising effort for CanTeen. The group offers counselling and other support services for young people who deal with the challenges of cancer. Brittany says it played a crucial role in helping her cope. “I started going to CanTeen maybe a couple of months into mum’s diagnosis and did some art therapy and counselling through them,” Brittany says. “I also went on quite a few

camps and was in the office at least once a week.” Brittany says the fundraising effort is in honour of all cancer patients, not just her mother. With one week remaining, the 16-year-old has already raised more than $5,000 – well exceeding her original goal of $3,000. “I want to give back to CanTeen for all the fun and helpful things they do for teenagers going through cancer,” she says. “I’ve been really amazed by how quickly everyone has become involved in this.” Apart from Brittany, CanTeen also offered support to the rest of her family, including older sister Alicia. The organisation was formed by a group of young cancer patients in 1985. It helps young people to explore and handle their feelings

news Heritage plan lent a hand A new project that seeks West Wallsend residents’ help to develop a heritage conservation plan for the area has received $100,000 from the state government’s Heritage Near Me program. Lake Macquarie council will receive funds to set a clear plan for the West Wallsend Heritage Conservation Area, and guide staged improvements over the next 10 to 15 years. “This heritage blueprint will help to reinforce the unique sense of place and historic character

of the village, provide an opportunity for residents to be involved in decisions about the revitalisation of the area, and promote a sense of pride in the local area, raising awareness of the rich local heritage that survives,” Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said. The project will incorporate a streetscape plan for the revitalisation of the Main Street commercial precinct, as well as a pedestrian access and mobility plan.

New service helps environment Residents from three local government areas have been praised for their use of a kerbside garden organics collection service. Cessnock City, Maitland City and Singleton councils launched the joint initiative on 6 March 2017, with a whopping 13,500 tonnes diverted from landfill since then. According to the councils, not only are residents enjoying the new service, but figures also show that contamination is at a rate of 0.3%, well below the

state average of 2.1%. “Each resident using the service is helping their local environment,” Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said. “The garden organics service has far-reaching benefits, including reducing greenhouse gases, recovering vegetation for processing into quality compost, and extending the life span of our local landfill sites.” Visit yourorganicsbin.com.au

Recognition for emergency workers Community members are encouraged to nominate exceptional emergency services personnel in the 2018 Rotary NSW Emergency Services Community Awards. District 9670 Governor Helen Ryan said the awards were a fantastic opportunity to recognise the contribution made by emergency services workers. “These awards allow the community to celebrate the many quiet achievers who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of others in times of disaster and devastation,” Mrs Ryan said. “Emergency services workers are some of the hardest-working people in our community and this is an opportunity to thank them for the work they do.” Nominations are open for individuals from Fire & Rescue NSW, Marine Rescue NSW, NSW Ambulance, NSW Rural Fire Service, NSW State Emergency Service, and the NSW Volunteer Association. Nominations close on 28 March. Finalists will attend an awards presentation dinner at Bankstown Sports Club on 1 June, with winners for each service to be announced. Visit rotaryescawards.org.au to submit your vote.

cover story Marathon Aussie career winds down Kurt Fearnley knows it’s the right time to hang up the green and gold. After two decades of success, Newcastle’s champion wheelchair racer will draw the curtain on his Australian career at next month’s Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. The 36-year-old is vying for a third consecutive medal in the 1500-metre T54 event, following his gold in Delhi in 2010 and silver at Glasgow in 2014. “I won’t be racing for Australia anymore [after the Games],” Fearnley tells Newcastle Weekly. “I’m going to race in New York and Chicago for as long as I can, but the Australian stuff, it just [takes up] a massive chunk of time. “It’s not just the one race, the greenand-gold stuff; it’s six months of your life really that just disappears. “The thought of finishing at home on the Gold Coast was too much to let go.” Fearnley says a new addition to the family, as well as taking on an ambassador role, has given him a totally different experience to previous Games.

“My wife and I have a four-monthold, and just knowing it’s the last time, knowing it’s the last Games,” he says. “I’ve been part of the bid process, I have been part of the sport and technical advisory committee as well, and I’ve been an ambassador for the Games. “Just the experience with the overall event is something I’ve never seen before.” Fearnley shares the Gold Coast 2018 ambassador title alongside a number of other stars, including hurdles champion Sally Pearson OAM, swimmer Cameron McEvoy, and cycling queen Anna Meares OAM. He will end his Australian career with a swag of medals. Since Sydney 2000, Fearnley has bagged three gold, seven silver and three bronze across five Paralympics, as well as four gold and a bronze at the world championships. He has also tasted success at marathons around the world, including multiple wins in the prestigious New York, London and Chicago events. Away from the track, Fearnley’s crawled the 96-kilometre Kokoda Trail, sailed on a winning

Newcastle hit back just two minutes later, though, as Connor Watson dived on a pin-point grubber to make it 28-26. Then, a penalty to the Knights with seven minutes left on the clock saw the visitors spread the ball wide and Sione Mata’utia stretched across the line on the right-hand side to score what would be the match-winner. Next up for Newcastle is the Sydney Roosters, with kick-off at 6.30pm this Sunday 25 March at Allianz Stadium.

Newcastle made it two wins on the spin to start the 2018 NRL season, coming from behind to beat Canberra 30-28 on Sunday. The Knights, full of confidence after the round one golden-point win against Manly, scored first in the 10th minute when Aidan Guerra crashed over. But, in a back-and-forth affair, Raiders captain Jarrod Croker looked to have finally put his side out of sight after posting eight straight points midway through the second period.

A hard-fought 1-0 win on Saturday night has all but assured the Newcastle Jets of a second place finish and a home semi-final. Jets fullback Jason Hoffman broke Wellington’s resistance in the 43rd minute, taking advantage of the hosts’ inability to clear their lines. After re-collecting his deflected cross, Hoffman’s shot on goal was blocked by the Phoenix

defence, but his second attempt in heavy traffic somehow squeezed past ‘keeper Tando Velaphi. The win put Newcastle five points behind A-League leaders Sydney FC with four matches left in the regular season. Melbourne Victory sits in third spot, 12 points behind the Jets. Newcastle will now face Adelaide at Hindmarsh Stadium this Friday 23 March. Kick-off is at 7.50pm.

time out Community buoyed by festival It’s long been regarded as one of Lake Macquarie’s most anticipated annual events. Easter long weekend in Toronto is reserved for the Lakemac Heritage Festival, formerly Lake Macquarie Classic Boatfest, and Heritage Afloat before that. Despite the name changes over the years, it is still the same, wellloved, all-ages event – now in its 23rd year – with classic boat and vintage car displays. It also features children’s activities, such as the Easter egg

hunt; live entertainment; Lake Macquarie Historical Society and vintage farm machinery displays; market stalls; art exhibitions; a sail past; blessing of the fleet; and, of course, the Quick ‘n’ Dirty boatbuilding competition. Ex-president of the Wooden Boat Association, Ross McLean, says, “It is a great weekend filled with country hospitality.” The event’s aim is to present a unique festival focused on Lake Macquarie’s rich heritage. Michael Edser is Grayson.

From Newy to Nashville Dudley and Redhead beaches star in Nashville-based Aussie artist Grayson’s latest music video. A Newcastle boy through and through, Grayson relocated to the USA music mecca in 2011 to pursue his dreams as a singer-songwriter. However, he still finds ways to give a nod to his hometown. The Americana/country folk

artist, who was born as Michael Edser, chose the stage name Grayson as a reference to his childhood street, where he spent many years developing his talent to write, sing and play music. And now, Grayson’s newest single, Margarita, from his forthcoming fifth studio album, offers another piece of home. Margarita, in Grayson’s own words, is about leaving it all behind, heading to the beach and having a drink; a remnant of summer we can all hang on to. It was recorded at Yellow Hammer Studios in Nashville. Before Grayson settled in Nashville, he spent a stint in Europe, where he toured with some of the biggest names in Ireland, including Aslan, Bagatelle and John Spillane. His debut single, Stand Clear, put him in the Top 40 Commercial Charts, and reached No.1 on the Indie Downloads charts in Ireland. Grayson’s third studio album,

Little Doors, peaked at No.16 on the iTunes Album Chart. He’s also performed at a number of international festivals, including Wildlife West Festival, Woodstock Folk Festival, and state fairs such as the Du Quoin State Fair in Illinois. But not all of the magic happens overseas. He has also performed with Aussie legends Jimmy Barnes, The Whitlams, and Vanessa Amorosi (to name a few). Grayson was home in January for the Tamworth Country Music Festival, where he performed headline shows and supported 2017 The Voice winner, Judah Kelly. And the cherry on top: Grayson has been cast in reality TV show, Another Country: Nashville, which stars a group of talented musicians and songwriters who have left their home countries, followed their hearts and travelled to Nashville, where they are ‘making it’ in Music City. - Georgia Osland

Japanese-inspired Modest and understated, Japanese style invokes a feeling of zen where you need it most. The home should be a calm, peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Thousands of years, steeped in tradition, have influenced Japan’s architecture and interior design. You can draw inspiration from natural materials and muted colours to create your own zen den.

Bathroom The ritual of soaking in a bathtub is held in high regard in Japanese culture. Opt for minimalistic design and clean lines. For example, Highgrove Bathrooms’ new Lucini range, including the freestanding bath ($1,099, 1500mm), offers fresh, organic vibes, bringing about a feeling of calm and relaxation.

Living As Japanese bathhouses are minimalistic, so, too, are their living spaces. Often shared by big families, Japanese homes focus heavily on communal spaces. Natural materials, such as timber and bamboo, are a perfect fit for furniture. The Alavus buffet ($999) from Focus on Furniture is one such example. If you need privacy, a screen, like the one pictured, from freedom, will do just the trick.

Could your kitchen do with a facelift...at less cost?

Autumnal appeal After a long, hot summer, now is the time to reinvent your living space with earthy tones and rich colours to create cosy spaces. Interior prop stylist Melissa Gullifer shares her top five autumnal styling tips:

1. Beautiful beds Upholstered beds have been trending for some time now, and it’s not hard to see why. They are super comfortable, and they look glamorous. Cosy up your bed with lots of warm and inviting layers.

A dining table is the focal point when family and friends come together to embrace food and conversations. Choose a dining table that looks fresh and enticing.

Pay a fraction of the cost of a new kitchen by keeping your existing cabinetry, but adding the features and design of a brand new kitchen.

3. Buffets are back Buffets are the best for storage,

Choose from a huge range of the latest door styles and colours, handles and benchtops. From pull out pantries, to corner drawer systems, we have you covered.

and with so many styles out there, you can’t go wrong.

4. Lazy lounge As a stylist, I enjoy mixing and matching cushions and introducing new warmth with a quality throw to add a bit of luxury and cosiness to my lounge.

5. Timeless timber Timber transcends seasonal trends. To create a warm and inviting space, choose rich timber pieces as the perfect accent for any living space. Small details can make a big statement.

PICK OF THE WEEK Braveheart Friday, SBS, 9.40pm, (1995) Mel Gibson’s (pictured) triumphant 13th-century epic based on Scottish warrior William Wallace and his quest to free Scotland from England’s yoke is a spectacle of immense proportions. Gibson’s riveting star performance sways you to Wallace’s cause almost immediately, keeping you there right until the tragic, horrifying finale – and the generous running time (nearing three hours) allows for plenty of political and historical background to add to the eye-popping imagery. A stirring and stimulating masterpiece.

Friday

Children Of Men

Zootopia Saturday, Prime, 7pm, PG (2016) These days we are spoilt when it comes to family-friendly movies, the majority of which involve cute animals, top-notch animation and sharp humour. In a world where animals live in a breathtakingly realistic city, we follow Judy (Ginnifer Goodwin), a rabbit who lands her dream job as the city’s first bunny cop. When she is relegated to mundane duties by her boss (Idris Elba), Judy befriends a hustling fox (Jason Bateman) and they set about uncovering their own crimes.

Saturday, SBS VLND, 8.30pm, MA15+ (2006) Absolutely brilliant sci-fi thriller from director Alfonso Cuarón (Y Tu Mamá También), based on a P.D. James novel which presents a chilling vision of 2027. In a world where women are infertile, a one-time activist (Clive Owen) is forcibly recruited by his “terrorist” ex-lover (Julianne Moore, pictured) to escort humankind’s sole pregnant woman to safety – an act that could potentially save mankind.

Christine says “ in my experience handling hundreds of Family Law matters, a Collaborative approach causes the least trauma for people and has achieved the most happy outcomes. But it is not a ‘one size fits all’. At CMI Law Firm we adopt the best model for your situation whether that be collaborative law, mediation, negotiation or litigation. INTRODUCING MACY

URGENT

58

Our beautiful girl Macy is ready to find a home of her very own. A gentle, kind and loving 3 year old girl who is looking for a cruisey and loving household. Being so low energy she won’t bug you for walks or runs, and is happy for a simple stroll. She can be quite nervous so a chaotic and noisy home isn’t what she is looking for. She would suit acreage perfectly as she is great off leash and doesn’t roam. But may suit a quiet suburban life also. Macy is around 45-50 kilos in size and fully grown. She is located in the lower hunter valley region of NSW and her adoption fee is $350 Foster carers urgently needed. You get support and you don’t pay vet or food bills. Jessica will need to be diplomatic, cooperative and empathetic if she is to progress this year. This is going to be a marvellous year for asking for favours and for making things happen. However, on no account should she force her opinions onto others. A spoonful of honey will get her a lot further than a spoonful of vinegar. It is important that she takes extra care with her health and it is the ideal time for check-ups with her health practitioners.

24 March 1977

ARIES: 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER: 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA: 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN: 22 DEC – 20 JAN

If you’ve been isolated or lonely it’s best to be out and about rather than staying home. Call or text a few friends to create a social situation for yourself rather than living in a bubble. An older person, who may not be considered that worldly, will be worth listening to.

Have you ever noticed how much better you feel when you’re busy? The good news is that you won’t have to wait long for the good times to come rolling in. Concentrated effort early in the week will leave time for a livelier social scene later on.

This is a month when your lifestyle comes into clear focus and you will be asking yourself: Is this really how I want to live or is there a better way? The secret of success is to live a life of love and passion and from that money naturally flows.

Someone who depends on you could cause anxiety. Differences with others at work become more obvious. Don’t let conflicting perceptions obstruct you from finishing your work. Try to keep work fun, especially if you’re tempted to walk out on someone who’s too serious for their own good.

TAURUS: 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO: 23 JULY – 23 AUG

On the career front, hard work is ahead but the good thing is that despite feeling insecure about your ability to handle certain challenges, you are more up to the job than you realise. Not everyone can do things and see things the way you do; different strokes for different folks.

With so many planets in fire signs (Leo, Aries, Sagittarius), you’re going to be fired up and ready to launch into everything that has to be done by you. There will be plenty of reward for steady effort, so roll up your sleeves and get on with it.

Singles, Uranus indicates that you’ll be excited about all the new prospects you will come across. All sorts of unusual characters are likely to come your way. You’ll also be happy to spend time with someone who’s been a support to you and points you the right way.

GEMINI: 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO: 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS: 23 NOV – 21 DEC

Treat yourself: you’re worth it. You’re likely to want to externalise your inner contentment and in some cases this will mean putting down roots by changing residence, purchasing a house or at least renovating your current dwelling so that it reflects more accurately who you are.

Unexpected events bring unexpected joy. Either someone you’ve been thinking of will pop up out of the blue or someone from your past will call. Some of the spurts of excitement may not be long lasting, so savour every moment. Work commitments may cause you to miss a social opportunity.

Try not to give into frustration or anger if you feel misunderstood. Instead, take a walk around the block and get things into perspective. At work, your forbearance will be appreciated by a superior. Be certain to rest up when needed and to allow yourself some small indulgences.

SCORPIO: 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS: 21 JAN – 19 FEB The harsh facts of life aren’t really your scene, but you’re always amazingly effective when you need to be. If work commitments this week should cause you to miss a social opportunity, look at this as a positive opening for you to explore other avenues.

PISCES: 20 FEB – 20 MAR If differences between you and others in your workplace seem more pronounced, don’t be afraid to use your sense of independence and humour; you could inspire a few wet blankets. When it comes to financial issues, someone older or in authority will point you in the right direction.

My favourite things AUTUMN Autumn is my favourite season. I love the cool mornings, mild days and even the darker evenings. I do enjoy the beaches and sunshine of summer, but I think every year I get less tolerant of the heat!

KIDS’ ART My two boys bring home all kinds of art, and it always brightens my day. It covers the house as well as my work desk. It’s lovely to hear about the dinosaurs and flowers and people they see in their creations.

EARL GREY TEA

Jenny Marchant

I’m not a coffee drinker but I love Earl Grey tea. The fragrance, the taste and the morning ritual. What’s not to love? I’ll have mine with a splash of milk, thanks.

1233 ABC NEWCASTLE MORNINGS PROGRAM PRESENTER

Jenny grew up in Newcastle listening to what was then 2NC. After moving around a little with the ABC, she is thrilled to be settled back in the best place in Australia, in a job where she gets to speak with the people who make the Hunter tick each morning. Jenny lives in Lake Macquarie with her two sons, aged five and three, a loving and patient husband, and a cranky but spoiled elderly cat. Jenny was part of the Walkley award-winning team from Newcastle’s ABC, which was recognised for its work during the 2007 Pasha Bulker storms and floods. You can hear her on the radio or online each weekday morning between 8.30am and 11am. 66

MY PARENTS’ GARDEN My parents have a beautiful garden full of Australian natives. It’s a hobby for them, but they’ve created a peaceful suburban oasis full of flowers and wildlife, and we’ve made some great family memories there.

DIGITAL AUDIO From podcasts to radio apps and online music - any chance I get I’ve got my headphones in my ears. Digital audio gives me the chance to broadcast beyond the ABC’s local AM radio frequency, and has also opened my ears to a world of new experiences and music.
