thursday 08 march 2018

This week... From the editor I still remember the Newcastle Knights’ 2001 grand fi nal win against the Parramatta Eels. I was seven years old. I knew very little about footy, but I was pretty pleased with the red and blue ribbons my aunty had very creatively done my hair with for a grand fi nal party. Everyone made a great big hoo-ha; eyes glued to the telly. These days, I still don't know much about football (or any sport, I must admit), but I know how seriously many Novocastrians take the NRL, and the pride they have in the Knights. It’s the fi rst and last thing you see at Broadmeadow train station: “Home of the Newcastle Knights.” You know a Knights fan when you see one. The other day, on my morning commute, I spotted a car covered in member stickers dating back to 2010. You can bet they’re not coming off anytime soon. Staring down the barrel of the 2018 season, which kicks off tomorrow (Friday 9 March) with a home game against Manly, we can report the Knights are feeling optimistic about the season ahead. The club is under new ownership by The Wests Group, and has signed several new recruits to see it through, hopefully with some success. That story on page 18. Go Knights!

news Youth program funding knocked back The state government has rejected an application to fund Youth Frontiers in the Hunter Region, despite last year being the youth mentoring program’s most successful. Delivered in schools across the state, Youth Frontiers pairs students aged 12 to 16 with older, more experienced mentors to develop young people’s leadership, teamwork, communication and decision-making skills. The work culminates in an end-of-year showcase for parents, mentors and peers. Until now, the program was delivered in the Hunter Region by Toronto-based Community Activities Lake Macquarie (CALM), in partnership with YWCA NSW. However, the government

rejected CALM’s funding application for 2018, instead awarding $6.6 million to Tuggerah Lakes Secondary College Tumbi Umbi Campus, MTC Australia, Raise Foundation and Save the Children Australia. CALM chief executive officer Sheena Harvey expressed disappointment at the government’s decision, given that 120 young people across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Port Stephens and the Hunter benefited from the program last year. They finished the year with three nominations for state awards, and all three students won. “We strongly believe CALM presented an excellent application, which took on board the 2017 feedback from students, schools and the wider community,”

Ms Harvey said. “I would like to reassure you, despite our disappointment, CALM will continue our work as a locallyresponsive community organisation driven to help children, families and young people. “We will continue to provide a range of youth programs,

news Take heed of new speed

Cancer education goes mobile A “potentially life-saving” cancer education program will hit the road to reach more people. Cancer Council NSW’s Beat Cancer @ Work program is now accessible in the Upper Hunter and regional NSW, thanks to a $33,000 Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation grant. The grant enabled the Cancer Council to buy a specialised vehicle to deliver the program. Piloted in the Lower Hunter over the past 12 months, the free program delivers 15-minute talks and educational resources to businesses, community groups and service clubs on how to reduce the risk of cancer. The talks cover three main areas: information, prevention, and support. Participants learn about what measures the Cancer Council has in place to help and support cancer patients and their families and carers.

To date, 55 businesses and 5,000 workers in the Hunter and Central Coast regions have participated in the program. This is expected to significantly increase as the program’s roll-out continues. Cancer Council NSW’s community programs coordinator, Glen Parsons, welcomed the program’s expansion. “The information we deliver through Beat Cancer @ Work is potentially life-saving, as there are many thousands of Australians diagnosed with some form of cancer every year,” Mr Parsons said. “The impact on the person, families, carers and communities is significant, so providing workplace education simply makes great sense.” Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation chair, Phil Neat, said the program was unique because it delivered vital cancer prevention

information directly to the workplace. “When a cancer diagnosis is provided, it can sometimes be an information overload for everyone involved,” Mr Neat said. “This grant enables more workers to participate in the program.” Visit cancercouncil.com.au to find out more.

The speed limit along a stretch of heavy arterial road from Wallsend to Hamilton will drop from 70km/h to 60km/h on Sunday 11 March. The new speed limit will affect Newcastle Road, Griffiths Road and Thomas Street. It comes after a Roads and Maritime Services review of speed limits in the Hunter, also influenced by Newcastle Road’s extensive crash history. Wallsend state MP Sonia Hornery urged people to take heed of the new speed limit, as, quite often, these changes caught drivers by surprise. “At most times of the day the road is heavily congested and the changes won’t make a difference to some people, but for others it will mean a big change,” she said. “I hope motorists heed the warning of the speed limit changes.”

news Stellar turnout for Newcastle show More than 30,000 people flooded Newcastle Showground last weekend for the 2018 Newcastle Regional Show, initial figures reveal. The finalised figure is expected to be closer to 38,000. Organisers are attributing the show’s success to the reinvigorated program focusing on bringing the country to the city, harkening back to the show’s roots. Newcastle Regional Show acting president Graham Poole said the country-city connection was a hit with little and big kids alike. “It was great to see everyone interacting with the animals, whether they were a toddler fascinated with the hen and her chicks, through to the adults trying to spot the queen in the bee display,” he said. Fine weather on Friday, Saturday and most of Sunday also helped draw more revellers. The most popular event was the rodeo on Saturday night, with the grandstands overflowing and the centre ring surrounded by people three-deep. Competitions attracted high-calibre animals,

particularly stud beef cattle, and many of the competitors will use their experience and points to qualify for and exhibit at the Sydney Royal Easter Show later this month. Newcastle show organisers plan to build on this year’s hit country-inspired events when the show returns next year from 1 to 3 March.

Call to maintain disability funding Labor’s acting shadow minister for disability services, Kate Washington, has renewed calls for the state government to maintain advocacy funding. From July, about 50 disability advocacy services, information providers and representational organisations will have their funding slashed as the government continues to roll out the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Newcastle Weekly reported in December that the Disability Advocacy NSW Hunter and Central Coast organisation was concerned about the mooted cuts. It stated the NDIS did not fund advocacy to help with making complaints, reviews, or attending meetings where someone needed to speak about unfair treatment. Ms Washington claimed that, despite marking the 25th anniversary of the Disability Discrimination Act, people with a disability were still fighting for respect. “This government can find $2.5 billion to knock down and rebuild stadiums but wants to cut funding to disability advocacy services,” she said. “The cost of continuing this funding is 0.5% of the government’s stadium funding.”

Funds to manage lead Lake Macquarie council has welcomed the state government’s commitment to provide $800,000 in funding over four years to help manage legacy contamination issues caused by the former Pasminco lead and zinc smelter in Boolaroo. It follows the government’s decision in November 2017 to adopt all 22 recommendations of the Lead Expert Working Group (LEWG) on managing residual lead contamination. The funds will go towards the

long-term management of lead contamination, including the establishment of a grant program to assist landowners to understand their contamination status. “We look forward to working collaboratively with the government to implement the recommendations and we are grateful to both the LEWG and the Lake Macquarie Community Reference Group for their work in this process over the last four years,” Lake Macquarie mayor, Kay Fraser, said.

news Grand plans for iconic hub It’s long been known as Newcastle’s cosmopolitan hub, but a lack of funding since the 1989 earthquake has left Beaumont Street looking “tired”. Now, a Hamilton Concept Masterplan will seek to transform the area in a bid to attract more families and reduce crime. Newcastle council is set to develop the plan over the coming months alongside the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce. The plan will include an improvement of facilities at James Street Plaza, explore the possibility of crime prevention through design techniques, and take community feedback into consideration. In April 2017, residents offered suggestions of a new playground, lighting upgrades, an amphitheatre, and more pedestrian zones. Hamilton Chamber of Commerce

president Nathan Errington believes the potential redevelopment cannot come soon enough. “Nothing has been spent [on Beaumont Street] since the 1989 earthquake,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “The street looks a bit tired, so it’ll be great if it can get a facelift. “The community told us what they wanted and this is an opportunity to put things into place.” Mr Errington says the chamber will turn its attention towards the plan after this Sunday’s Beaumont Street Carnivale – an annual celebration that showcases Hamilton’s rich multicultural heritage while supporting local businesses. Newcastle council has requested the Hamilton Business Improvement Association match its funding for the plan’s development. - Ben Murphy

Kids club’s special milestone The group’s numbers might have dwindled over the years, but its impact on the community remains as strong as ever. In the past 12 months alone, the John Hunter Children’s Hospital Kids Club has supplied a sleep machine worth more than $18,000; a special sofa bed priced at about $3,550; a blood pressure monitor that cost over $3,300; plus funds to Child Life Therapy and Oncology Life Therapy amounting to $1,000 each. The kids club also secured a $186,000 grant from the Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation last year. It went towards the purchase of 42 cameras at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which enable parents and families to use their computer or phone remotely to view their newborn babies. After more than two decades

of fundraising, the highlyrespected kids club celebrated its 25th anniversary this week at the hospital’s Royal Newcastle Centre. A special guest was Linda Hurley, patron of the United Hospital Auxiliary and wife of the NSW Governor General, David Hurley. The celebrations included morning tea and a presentation on the group’s efforts over the years.

Seeing double They’re “proud” as punch. Brothers Tom and Noah Proudlock are the first set of twins in Jewells Primary School’s history to make captain and vice-captain. There were just seven votes between them. As identical twins, their teachers and peers have a tough time telling Tom and Noah apart, but one thing is for certain: they are well-loved by all. “They’re just beautiful boys, not just as twins but as individuals,” teacher Samantha Skinner said. It was the lure of extra responsibilities that inspired the boys to nominate for the roles, as they prepare for high school next year. Plus, there was always a chance they could end up captain and vicecaptain together. “Our speeches were the same,” Tom said. “I said how cool it would be to

have Noah as my vice-captain, and Noah said the same about me. “One of those turned out to be true.” “I felt really proud when we got it,” Noah added. Noah is now head of the Sport & Rec Committee, while Tom looks after the school’s public relations, which includes the sandpit and other common areas.

According to Tom, they each couldn’t have picked a better righthand man. “There’s a bit of arguing between us sometimes, but we’re mostly happy,” he said. The first reverse vending machine has been installed in Maitland as part of the state government’s Return and Earn container deposit scheme. The machine, which gives 10-cent refunds for eligible drink containers, is located at the BP service station at Thornton. A second will soon be placed at the Home Consortium on Mustang Drive, Rutherford. “Return and Earn is the largest litter reduction initiative to be introduced in NSW, and now the Maitland community can get involved,” Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, said. More than 115 million containers have been returned across the state since the scheme started on 1 December. Visit returnandearn.org.au for more information.

news Historic building’s new direction When it comes to wedding venues, the Hunter Region’s beaches and wineries have obvious appeal. But, after years of painstaking restoration works, an historic building in the heart of Maitland now offers soon-to-be newlyweds a different option. Mansfield House, built in 1887, previously operated as banking chambers, firstly by CBC and then NAB, until 1990. Since 2012, Tom Richards and his business partner, Christian Cramp, have spent countless hours restoring the High Street site to its former glory. This included repainting walls, replacing tiling, and re-varnishing seating. Their long-term vision was to turn Mansfield House into a popular location for weddings, private functions, and other community events such as fundraisers. “It’s about the public having some sort of access,” Mr Cramp says. “[Mansfield] is a beautiful building, but we didn’t spend hundreds of thousands of dollars for it to just look good from the outside. “We’ve put a lot of thought into every little detail.”

As the venue’s wedding coordinator, Mr Cramp believes it provides a flexible alternative for brides and grooms. “There’s nothing of this complete standard in the middle of Maitland – you have to go to the vineyards or the middle of Newcastle,” he says. “Both have beautiful locations, with the beach and city views and the wineries, but we’re a different option – not better, just different.” Mr Richards, the events coordinator, praised the community for showing patience during the lengthy refurbishment. “We’ve looked to restore [the building] to its original form as much as possible,” he says. “The colour of the paintwork, for example, is in keeping with the time – we have methodically taken the time and effort to get the building back to what it was in its former splendour.” In the past few years, Mansfield has hosted various fundraisers, including The Umbrella Foundation Australia’s An Evening of Gatsby and an open house for the Friends of Grossman House. - Ben Murphy

news Charity ride’s change of pace

SPONSORED BY

There will be a change of pace as a new circuit awaits at this year’s Loop the Lake. The iconic charity ride, which is hosted by the Warners Bay Rotary Club, takes place on Sunday 11 March. It is set to include three options – an 85-kilometre loop from Speers Point Park to Doyalson and back; a 43-kilometre half-ride from Doyalson; and a flexible family course. The new circuit has been designed to improve rider safety, following negotiations between police and event organisers. Rotary club member John Evans says Loop the Lake is an important annual fundraiser, with all profits going to local and international charities. “The old circuit that we did for 20 years was a bit dangerous

around the back end of the lake, so we had to come up with a new circuit,” he says. “[Loop the Lake] has donated more than $1 million to John Hunter Children’s Hospital since it began, and other charities like the Cancer Council and Camp Quality have also benefited.” There will be two starting points for this year’s event. The first, at Speers Point Park, takes riders along the Fernleigh Track, down to Catherine Hill Bay, and on to Doyalson RSL. Mr Evans says participants can then opt to enter the event from this point onwards. “Doyalson RSL have agreed to fund morning tea for riders in the carpark, which has saved the [rotary club] quite a bit of money,” he says. “After muffins, coffee and cold drinks, we’ll then go

sport Sprinting towards Games success It’s been a mammoth few weeks for Charlestown athlete Erin Cleaver. The 18-year-old was named Lake Macquarie Sportsperson of the Year at an awards ceremony in Belmont after being confirmed on the Australian team for the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Cleaver, who has a form of cerebral palsy, is set to compete in both the T38 long jump and T38 100-metre events at the Games on the Gold Coast. The track and field star’s silver medal at the world championships in London last year earned her an automatic selection. It’s been a tough road to qualification, but Cleaver, and her sprint coach Shaun Fletcher, have ticked off little goals along the way. “I’ve trained five days a week for two hours each day over the past so many years to get to each

international competition,” Cleaver tells Newcastle Weekly. “I train as hard as I can [for the Games]; there are little goals to get to before each competition and my coach and I plan for situations like how to get around an injury if it occurs. “But everything has been quite smooth to get there really. “It’s just been about me getting older, growing different muscles, and becoming used to that change.” It will be Cleaver’s second appearance at the Games. During the teen’s debut, at Rio in 2016, fellow Novocastrian and legendary wheelchair racer, Kurt Fearnley, played an important role in easing her nerves. “At my first Games, I was only 15 [years old] and Kurt became like a father figure in that I was so

Nabbout jets off to Japan Fan favourite Andrew Nabbout will fly to Japan this week, fresh off bagging the winner in Newcastle’s sensational 2-1 victory over rivals Sydney FC. Nabbout agreed to join Urawa Red Diamonds after the J-League heavyweights triggered a clause in his contract. The Red Diamonds offered a significant transfer fee for the bustling winger, who scored 18 goals in 46 appearances for the Jets. On Saturday, in what would prove to be Nabbout’s final game, the Jets were reduced to 10 men when Roy O’Donovan saw red for a swinging arm. But, with the score locked at 1-all, the Jets’ talisman, Nabbout, cut inside and unleashed a fierce strike, which found the bottom right corner of the net. It eventually handed Newcastle all three points against the defending champions.

sport Knights primed for season opener Jamie Buhrer is adamant heightened expectations will not hinder the Newcastle Knights as the club prepares for its first-round clash against Manly. After a decade of struggle, both on and off the field, the cashed-up Knights, under new owners The Wests Group, made several key recruits ahead of the 2018 season. Newcastle’s signings include the likes of Sydney Roosters trio Mitchell Pearce, Connor Watson and Aidan Guerra; North Queensland young gun Kalyn Ponga; Melbourne’s Slade Griffin; and Brisbane duo Tautau Moga and Herman Ese’ese. Despite claiming a morale-boosting 26-22 win over defending premiers Melbourne in a closed trial, the new-look side then suffered a heavy defeat to Parramatta in its final preseason hit-out. got a lot of new players and they’ve brought plenty of enthusiasm with them,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “There’s a certain level of excitement over our expected growth and also a bit of relief that it’s the end of preseason.” Buhrer says the Knights haven’t discussed the added expectations placed on the squad. “I don’t think it’s completely necessary,” he says. “We’ve got good depth at the club and there are a lot of guys who have played 150 to 200 [NRL] games. “The expectation within our own club is the only thing we’re worried about.” The 28-year-old utility adds he is looking forward to facing his former side. Buhrer played more than 120 NRL games for the Sea Eagles over a seven-year period before signing with Newcastle last season. “I’ve got a lot of good friends there [at Manly]; they are a good, strong, proud club,” he says. “They’ll come here ready to play but we want to kick off the season with a win and we’re

Go Bananas for hearing health Did you know that potassium, found in bananas, can help preserve your hearing? Research shows that maintaining a balanced diet, and high levels of potassium, can help slow down the rate of hearing loss. With more than 25% of Newcastle’s

population aged over 60, it’s important to test your ears. That’s why the HearingLife Newcastle team has launched its Go Bananas campaign. To find out more, visit campaignforbetterhearing.com.au, or phone 1300 460 460 to find your local clinic.

Nerd’s the word Newcastle funnyman Clark Gormley has struck an unusual balance between the left and right sides of his brain. Most people are either creatively-inclined (right brain) or analytically-inclined (left brain), but seldom both. Gormely, however, is a part-time engineer, part-time comedian, allowing both of his passions to flourish in symbiosis. “There aren’t many engineers who are also creative,” Gormely told Newcastle Weekly. Later this month he’ll present his newest (and self-professed “nerdiest”) act, Clark’s Nerdy Science Show, at The Royal Exchange as part of the Newcastle Fringe Festival. It’s got everything: original music, comedic bits about famous eccentric scientists and the periodic table of elements – even an amusing PowerPoint presentation.

time out Clark Gormely’s scientific set-up for Clark’s Nerdy Science Show.

Gormley is no stranger to public performances. He’s one half of the Nerds & Music duo, which has played around town and at folk festivals for a decade, and is currently recording its third album. Gormley has also emceed for Club Sandwich at The Royal Exchange since its inception in 2012. “A one-man show felt like the next step,” Gormley said. This will be his third year with the Newcastle Fringe Festival, and his third show; his first being Up the Nerdsville Track, followed by the equally-successful Dial N for Nerder. Wherever he goes, Gormley pulls big crowds. Last year he performed at the Melbourne and Adelaide fringe festivals, as well as the Tamworth Country Music Festival in January.

Three months in the making, Clark’s Nerdy Science Show is on at The Royal Exchange from Thursday 22 to Saturday 24 March at 6pm each day. They’re just three of 78 performances by 27 different acts in the Newcastle Fringe Festival, from Wednesday 21 to Sunday 25 March. Other venues include The Cathedral, the Grand Hotel, Catapult Dance Studios, The Edwards Bar, and the Gallipoli Club. Performers hail from the world over, including England, Germany, Canada, Perth, Melbourne, Sydney, and, of course, Newcastle. Dulux 2018 Colour Trends – Kinship Palette. Styled by Bree Leech. Photo: Mike Baker

Earthy tones add autumnal appeal With autumn here and longer nights setting in, there’s no better time to turn up the cosiness factor in your home. This season, sophisticated, earthy shades partnered with light neutral tones are expected to dominate alongside tribal-inspired textured furnishings – perfect for creating the cocooning and nurturing space we all crave in cooler weather. Dulux has identified Kinship as one of four key palettes in its Dulux 2018 Colour Trends forecast. The Kinship collection of rich hues is inspired by traditional cultures and folklore, and features warm terracotta, russet, soft grey-greens, cosy neutrals and pops of vibrant red that hint at an Eastern influence. It pairs beautifully with the natural materials that are so popular right now, such as warm timbers, stone and linens. If you’re daunted by the idea of introducing deep colours to your space, you needn’t be. Even a dash of these richer hues against a white or neutral background, in the right spot, can make a big impact. Whether you choose to go all out or keep it minimal, the key is to pair these rich colours

with a complementary white or neutral with similar undertones. This will create a sense of balance, allowing the bold hues to enhance, rather than overwhelm, your space. Interior stylist Michelle Halford, of The Design Chaser blog, shares her top styling tips: • Offset rich colours with a soft, complementary neutral to create balance. • Introduce furniture and accessories in warm, neutral materials, such as a vintage timber console or dresser, rattan chairs, woven lighting and baskets. Bold, abstract art, textured wall hangings and plenty of greenery provide the perfect finishing touches. • Up the cosiness factor by adding lashings of texture. Think oversized knits, luxurious velvets and linens. • Seek out cushions and rugs that pick up on the earthy shades in the Kinship Palette, and layer them for impact. • Bring a fun, folkloric style to the space with patterns, embroidery, fringing and tassel detailing. • Use accents of black in furniture and artwork to ground your scheme.

Digging up the truth about olives

What is the difference between black and green olives? The answer is that the colour determines ripeness. Both green and black olives are born on the tree together; black being ripe, while green need to be pickled. The olive is a superbly versatile tree, great for a tropical

Now in le t Newcas

garden or even in formal gardens, but wonderful for a Mediterranean-style garden. I love its hardy grey foliage, which works perfectly with white, also using lavender and buxus as a border. Olives are quick-screening plants and tend to weather coastal salt. Indeed, with minimal care, olive

trees will live and produce fruit for more than a thousand years. This hardy tree will grow virtually anywhere in Australia where there is a cool winter and a warm summer. They are happy in average daily maximum temperatures above 30 degrees but they can survive in temperatures as high as 50 degrees. Some varieties prefer a winter frost, while most varieties survive as long as the winters are cool enough. The olive is droughthardy and will tolerate most varieties of soil conditions, preferring a neutral pH level. Don’t plant in heavy soils that store water after excessive rain. A better choice is a hilly, rocky site (remember the olive’s home is Greece). Never plant in clay. Olive trees require very little watering.

THE WEEK • Prepare garden beds for planting sweet peas on St Patrick’s Day by fertilising with poultry manure. • Keep fighting lawn grub and apply Seasol to stimulate root growth in lawns before winter. • Roses will respond to an application of Sudden Impact now we have had a little rain.

PICK OF THE WEEK Kung Fu Panda 2

Gnomeo & Juliet

Saturday, WIN, 7pm, PG (2011) Hoodwinked! and Kung Fu Panda were two animated films from the past decade that impressed audiences beyond expectations. Now the sequels have rolled around, and while Hoodwinked Too! was a bit of a stinker, this follow-up from Dreamworks – the studio behind Shrek – delivers in spades. The hilarious Jack Black again provides the voice of our hero, Po, as he fights to save China from the evil peacock Lord Shen (Gary Oldman). The effects are amazing and the script is funny.

Friday

Sunday, ELEVEN, 6.30pm (2011) Shakespeare’s classic tragedy gets an unlikely makeover in this animated comedy set in British suburbia. Two warring clans of garden gnomes separated by a fence are plunged into more chaos when young Gnomeo (voiced by James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt) from each clan meet and fall in love. Frog nurse Nanette (Ashley Jensen) and flamingo Featherstone (Jim Cummings) offer advice as the two try to negotiate a romance in the face of their families’ wrath.

The Martian

Friday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (2015) Matt Damon (pictured) heads to space to play botanist Mark Watney, an astronaut who must survive alone on Mars after being left for dead by his crew during a fierce storm on the Red Planet. With only a meagre amount of supplies, the stranded spaceman must use his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists, led by Jeff Daniels, work tirelessly to bring him home. Another winner from Ridley Scott (Blade Runner, Alien).

FAMILY LAW PROBLEM? Want freedom from ongoing conflict? Consider Collaborative Law If your matter is suitable we can contract with you and your ‘ex’ and their solicitor not to go to Court. Instead we take a collaborative apporoach with the other side which is aimed at problem solving in a series of meetings. The meetings are aimed at achieving a negotiated outcome based on your needs. Your needs take priority.

NW0958

Both sides’ lawyers are committed to helping you to achieve an out of Court settlement without conflict, being a transition to a new phase of your life. Mel Zambelis and Christine Iwaszkiewicz

The collaborative law model offers a fixed price to resolution at a fraction of

149A Adelaide Street Raymond Terrace | Ph: 4987 3844

the average cost to litigate a contentious matter. Christine says “ in my experience handling hundreds of Family Law matters, a Collaborative approach causes the least trauma for people and has achieved the most happy outcomes. But it is not a ‘one size fits all’. At CMI Law Firm we adopt the best model for your situation whether that be collaborative law, mediation, negotiation or litigation. The alternatives are discussed at your initial consultation which costs only $82.50 upon mentioning this ad”.

INTRODUCING ODIN

58

Odin may be named after a god, but he is a real galoot. He will have you in hysterics with the antics he gets up to. Odin loves getting out and about in the car to go on leisurely walks and dates at the local cafe. Odin is in care with other pet greyhounds and is happy to wait patiently at home while his family are out. He will amuse himself with his favourite toys and sunning himself in the backyard. Could Odin be the boy you have been waiting for? Please contact Friends of the Hound to find out more about this gorgeous boy.’

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

If there’s a problem on your mind, something that has been worrying you or you feel needs to be said, now’s a good time to air it. Try not to apportion blame; just tell it the way it is and you’ll be surprised how good a response you may get.

Mars in your 6th house indicates a consolidation, both personally and in your working life. You have made great progress - perhaps more than you realise – and it’s always a great idea to stand back and wait for changes to work themselves through to a conclusion.

Mars in Sagittarius has you seeking for the subtext in what’s being said, searching out the true meaning of a deep relationship. Your hidden romantic nature will serve you well, so if you want to revitalise a relationship or start a new romance, just tap into your well of fantasy.

If you feel unfairly criticised, your opportunity to turn the tables will come. With so much focus on your 4th house, it indicates that past actions are yielding their harvest, both good and bad, and the vision of a new way is opening up before you.

Mars in Sagittarius heightens your interest in the mysterious so you will need to be wary of temptation to stray, especially if someone very attractive shows an interest in you. If you are in a long-standing relationship, it will pay to listen carefully to your partner.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

While secrets and lies can add spice to an intimate relationship, they can also cause hurt if things get out of control. If you think that’s harsh advice, you’ll nevertheless be glad you followed it when a loving relationship shows an exciting bonus.

The Sun and Uranus create a delicate balance between longstanding difficulties in your circle of friends and a positive need on your part to make changes and move on. Nothing will be resolved overnight, but you’ll win respect for staying true to your principles.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

If you’re in a business for yourself or home based, you can expect significant progress with a plan you’ve been working on for a while coming to fruition. There is a positive outcome to your financial affairs and it would be an ideal time to invest in property.

With Venus in Aries, it’s a good time to nurture important work contacts and perhaps mix a little business with pleasure. It’s also an ideal time to start a new health regime or join a gym. Outdoor exercise will help settle your nerves and enhance your mental health.

Travel will be linked to a developing relationship, so expect the arrival of someone from afar. Alternatively you may be hopping on a plane yourself. Your spiritual self is trying to tell you something important that will affect a close friend or relative, so pay special heed to dreams.

March is the ideal month to take a short break with your partner. There are plenty of forces working on your behalf right now, but keep your own counsel and don’t place too much faith in what others may promise. Focus on managing your health, emotional and monetary resources.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

Getty Images

10 March 1984

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MARCH Be generous with your time and patience when an old friend turns up on your doorstep with a familiar problem and asks for help. If you are thinking of starting or enlarging your family, this is an ideal time to make plans in that regard.

Adult humour in a box From Crown & Andrews and Goliath Games comes The Game of Nasty Things. It’s a hilarious game, where players read a topic card and write down a response. It can be anything that springs to mind – there’s no right or wrong answer. All the responses are read aloud, and players must decipher who said what. You won’t believe the shocking things the people you know will come up with! RRP $39.95, available at all leading retailers. Suitable for ages 18+.

My favourite things MUSIC Music plays a key role in my life. I can’t live without it. It is a source of inspiration for all of my creative projects. It is the closest thing we have to being able to physicalise the subconscious. From Frank Sinatra to Led Zeppelin, from AC/DC to Garth Brooks, Billy Joel to Cat Empire, these are my jam!

THEATRE The theatre scene here in Newcastle is growing at a rate of knots. There are so many new theatre companies popping up in our city producing some edgy and compelling stuff. There’s nothing better than sitting in a room with a bunch of strangers and being told a story by a bunch of live actors. It takes us back to our roots as humans, sitting around a campfire being told incredible stories by our tribes’ best storytellers.

FAMILY We are a busy little family! My wife Hayley is my biggest supporter and my three kids (ages four, six and 13) keep me well and truly out of trouble. Never a dull moment.

Daniel Stoddart HUNTER DRAMA CEO

Daniel is one of the most established performers and event producers in the Hunter. The 35-year-old actor/director founded Hunter Drama (an academy for young actors) in 2007 and has since gone on to win multiple international awards at the Junior Theatre Festival in the USA. He cofounded the Junior Theatre Celebration Australia in 2016 to celebrate the life-changing impact of musical theatre on young people. Daniel is a multi-award winner both in Australia and the USA for his services to the arts. Most notably, he has been awarded the keys to the city in North Carolina for his contributions to the arts in the USA. 66

BOOKS Nothing like a good old-fashioned book! I just finished reading Insanely Gifted by Jamie Catto and have started reading The Cocaine Diaries: A Venezuelan Prison Nightmare by Jeff Farrell and Paul Keany. I love reading play scripts as well.

TRAVEL I do a lot of travel backwards and forwards to America and I will never grow sick of meeting fellow performers, young and old, and exploring other places people call home. New York is my second home.
