This week...

From the editor For the longest time, I couldn’t warm to January. There's something about the absence of school zones and commuter traffic, combined with out-of-office replies from every third person you email, that makes you feel like life is moving in slow motion.

The Christmas holiday hangover really knocks the wind out of your sails.

What day is it again? Do chips and dip constitute dinner?

But this year, I'm sad to see January go.

I've come to love this transient month for the same reasons it once irked me. I think it has a little to do with getting older.

These days, I don't mind if time slows down. It gives me a chance to stop, breathe, and appreciate.

As Ferris Bueller (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, 1986) once said: "Life moves pretty fast.

If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it."

That said, there’s a lot to look forward to this month. I have a birthday coming up, plus a trip to visit our sister publication, the Canberra Weekly.

February also means Surfest – Newcastle's flagship international festival of surfing, and the largest in the southern hemisphere. I caught up with 16-year-old surfer Elle Clayton-Brown, of Corlette, who is competing on the junior circuit and vying for a spot in the women’s pro. Her ambition is truly refreshing. Cover story on page 12.

news Liquor licence conditions reviewed Newcastle council has recommended extended cocktail service and potentially longer trading hours for 14 CBD venues with good track records.

In its submission to the NSW Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority’s review of licence conditions, the council suggests that “lowimpact” venues – those that manage noise well and serve alcohol responsibly, with a low rate of alcohol-related violence – should be exempt from some conditions that currently apply under “The Newcastle Solution”.

Introduced in 2008, the solution encompasses a suite of measures designed to reduce alcoholrelated violence and antisocial behaviour, particularly during late-night trading.

These include no stockpiling of drinks, no shots, no mixed drinks containing more than 30ml of alcohol, no more than four drinks per person, and no ready-to-drink beverages after 10pm; as well as a quarterly compliance audit.

The conditions apply to: the Cambridge Hotel, Civic Hotel, Clarendon Hotel, Crown & Anchor Hotel, Customs House, The Family Hotel (formerly Ducks Nuts), The Argyle House (formerly Fanny’s

of Newcastle), Hotel CBD, King Street Hotel, Lucky Country Hotel, Finnegan’s Hotel (formerly MJ Finnegans), Queens Wharf Brewery, Grand Hotel, and the Great Northern Hotel.

However, the review seeks to determine if these conditions are still valid.

In its 14-page submission, Newcastle council highlights that, in the past 10 years, “the culture of nightlife has changed considerably” for the better.

The council supports the retention of a 1.30am lockout time and 3.30am closing time for all premises subject to the conditions, as well as the existing 10pm alcohol trading restrictions, bar one: cocktail service, which would be lifted from 10pm to 12am. The council would also consider extending premises’ trading hours on a case-by-case basis.

Prominent hotelier and Newcastle & Hunter Australian Hotels Association (AHA) president, Rolly de With, welcomes the council’s support.

“The AHA is not seeking to remove the lockout or vary closing times,” Mr de With says.

“The continual use of the term “The Newcastle Solution” is inhibiting Newcastle from properly developing a vibrant night-time economy.”

But Hunter Multicultural Community Drug Action Team chairperson, Tony Brown, disagrees, citing Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research figures that Newcastle remains a violence hotspot, with the assault rate nearly double the state average.

“The principle and precedent of rewarding a small number of influential businesses for complying with the existing legal obligations is extraordinary,” Mr Brown says.

“The council has completely ignored the [solution’s] benefits.”

Childcare package to shortchange families: Conroy Childcare is an essential service for working families, when both parents must put in the hard yards to make ends meet.

It has been revealed that 1,372 families in the Newcastle area will be disadvantaged when the Turnbull government’s new childcare package comes into effect on 2 July.

Under the government’s policy, families will have to satisfy a set of rules to qualify for government assistance and undergo a work and means test.

The work test will require families to satisfy minimum levels of “approved activities”, such as paid employment, volunteering or study, each fortnight to qualify for the maximum number of subsidised hours of childcare.

Low-income families on $65,710 a year or less who do not meet the activity test will be able to claim 24 hours of subsided care per child, per fortnight without having to meet the activity test, as part of the Child Care Safety Net. The subsidy rate for families below this income threshold is 85%.

This new package follows an 18% increase in childcare fees in March 2017, which means families are paying an average of $2,000 a year more for childcare.

Federal Shortland MP, Pat Conroy, says that this new package will hit vulnerable families hard.

“This is another kick in the guts for families who are struggling with flat wage growth, and facing massive hikes in their electricity, education and health bills,” he said.

On-demand on-the-go An on-demand bus service is being trialled in Lake Macquarie, where travellers can download a free mobile phone app to order a bus to their front door.

The Newcastle Transport On Demand App matches customers travelling in the same direction, creating an “optimised, flexible route” where there is demand.

The on-demand bus trial operates in addition to existing routes in Dudley, Whitebridge, Mount Hutton, Windale, Tingira Heights, Eleebana, Warners Bay, Gateshead and Charlestown.

Depending on the trial’s success, Newcastle Transport operator Keolis Downer says it will consider rolling it out on a larger scale.

Centrelink wait times slammed Reports of hours spent waiting on hold, unexpected disconnections and unhelpful staff have undermined Centrelink’s supposed average wait time.

An annual Centrelink report pegs the average customer call wait time at 15 minutes and 44 seconds.

But anecdotal evidence suggest call times have been getting longer and longer.

The community has taken to Facebook to voice its concerns.

Federal Paterson MP Meryl Swanson said it’s been a major issue for many of her constituents, labelling Centrelink’s online services as “generationally unfriendly”.

Ms Swanson implored the government to address the issue.

news Study volunteers sought We all have those days when we can’t remember where we put our keys, our phones, or even why we entered the room. But could our diets be the problem?

The Hunter Medical Research Institute is recruiting volunteers for a joint study with The University of Newcastle that aims to get to the bottom of just that.

Previous studies conducted by the Clinical Nutrition Research Centre team, led by Dr Rachel Wong and Professor Peter Howe, have shown that adults who are overweight and who don’t exercise regularly have stiffer blood vessels in the brain, which leads to memory loss.

Professor Howe believes the demands of a hectic lifestyle can make it difficult for people to maintain a balanced diet and find time to exercise.

for overweight adults (body mass index between 25 and 35) between 50 and 80 years old (women must be post-menopausal), who do less than two-and-a-half hours per week of intentional exercise (walking not included) and are not currently taking fish oil or curcumin supplements, to participate in the 16-week intervention trial.

Super seamstresses save the day for the tiniest of superheroes

Many kids dream of being a superhero.

Whether it’s leaping tall buildings in a single bound, having superhuman strength or flying, kids love to copy their favourite Marvel or DC Comics character, and find comfort in their special abilities and sense of justice.

Superheroes don’t fight baddies without their capes, and, for superhero children in hospital who brave scary situations, it’s no different.

Capes 4 Kids Australia is a registered charity that provides capes of all colours and characters to children who are receiving medical treatment in hospital.

Fassifern resident Glenda Chase has always loved fabric and sewing, so, when she answered Capes 4 Kids’ call-out for more sewers on social media, it was a match made in heaven.

The capes bring comfort to children during their treatment, and embody the values of all superheroes, mainly cooperation and following instructions.

Mrs Chase’s mother, Hazel Rose, does the bulk of the sewing, while Mrs Chase sources fabric from local op shops.

Most of the capes are made from children’s bed linen with characters on them.

“There’s one set pattern so that all of the capes are the same,” Mrs Chase explained, “but it’s a mix-and-match process, and you can make your own designs.”

The dynamic duo is set to become a terrific trio with Mrs Chase’s friend, Lynne Osland, joining them in her retirement this week.

“I’m a sewer from way back, but I’ve had no time for it when I was working full-time,” Mrs Osland said.

Capes 4 Kids Australia is always in need of super sewers; however, they are also looking for super sponsors to help with shipping costs to hospitals in need of capes. The charity is seeking heroes to prepay shipping bags, or a caring courier company that can donate its services.

news Australians all let us rejoice Australia Day was a big one for many in the Hunter, with citizenship ceremonies held throughout the region among a spate of celebrations.

While locals revelled in festivals, barbecues and cricket in glorious weather, 180 people took the citizenship pledge at Newcastle council chambers – the biggest naturalisation ceremony in the region.

Thirty-seven more were inducted in Lake Macquarie, while Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens gained 17, 14 and 13 new citizens, respectively.

In separate ceremonies, Australia Day awards were bestowed upon worthy residents, sportspeople and community groups lauded for their significant contributions to their local communities.

Discussing domestic violence in the workplace Domestic violence doesn’t just affect victims at home, despite what the term implies.

Perpetrators often follow their targets to work, threatening them through phone calls and text messages and jeopardising their jobs.

An innovative domestic violence awareness training program has been developed by Newcastlebased women and children’s refuge, Jenny’s Place.

The workshop, called Healthy Relationships, Positive Communities, aims to educate people about domestic and family violence; what constitutes domestic violence; the effects it can have on victims; and where to seek help.

news Funds keep wings in the air Caring for a critically-ill child can be stressful and upsetting at the best of times.

When the family lives in an isolated area, far from medical care, that stress is compounded by worries of how to get to hospital for appointments.

Extended periods of time spent travelling takes a financial, physical and mental toll on sick children and their families.

Commercial flying and public transport are often unsuitable options for children who are fighting cancer, due to compromised immune systems and the risk of infection.

Little Wings swoops in to save the day by transporting sick youngsters and their families to and from major hospitals, free of charge, so they can receive vital treatment, yet still have the support of family

close at hand.

Established in 2012, Little Wings fledged as a service to ferry children to and from Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney.

Nowadays, its capacity has extended to Sydney Children’s Hospital and John Hunter Children’s Hospital.

The not-for-profit charity recently received $15,500 in funding from the Newcastle Permanent’s CommunityAssist program.

“We were really excited to hear that we were the recipients of the money,” Little Wings chief executive officer, Richelle Koller, told Newcastle Weekly.

“One of our volunteer drivers, Gina Williams, nominated us to her fellow staff at the Newcastle Permanent.”

Young gun carves it up As a child, Corlette surfer Elle Clayton-Brown could barely muster the courage to stand up on a board, let alone catch a wave.

Then, one day, galvanised by her younger brother Mike’s ability to do so effortlessly, she did it.

That was about four or five years

ago, when, guided by her father, master competitor Mark Watson, Clayton-Brown made the natural progression from Nippers to surfing.

Now, she’s staring down the barrel of her third Surfest – Newcastle’s flagship international festival of surfing, and the largest in the

southern hemisphere.

More than 700 national and international competitors from more than two-dozen countries flock to Newcastle to compete in the event.

No pressure!

After earning a wildcard in the women’s QS6000 event in Port Stephens recently, which saw her battle it out with the world no.7, Clayton-Brown is poised to take on the Surfest Women’s Pro QS6000 trials – another open-age contest – on 17 and 18 February.

But she has her work cut out for her on the junior circuit, too.

“Even the junior girls have all stepped it up,” Clayton-Brown tells Newcastle Weekly.

“It’s definitely a lot harder to get results but it’s good because it creates a challenge.”

Clayton-Brown is in line to compete in the 16s girls and Pro Junior divisions.

If she qualifies for the women’s event, she says her main goal is to “learn how the pros do it”.

She’s already had a taste, going head-to-head with Merewether’s Philippa Anderson in the final of last year’s Mattara Surf Classic.

“I learnt a lot from that heat; [Anderson] doesn’t sit and wait for the waves – she makes it happen,” Clayton-Brown says.

One day, she hopes to be seeded up there with the big players.

“My ultimate goal is to get up there and become a world champ, but I’m going to take it bit by bit and not rush it; just train hard and hopefully get there.”

Pedal power boosts downhill season The 2018 Downhill National Season won’t be an uphill battle, with Lake Macquarie council pushing forward as a stakeholder for Round 2 of the mountain biking competition.

Mountain Bike Australia chief executive officer, Shane Coppin, was delighted about the council’s support for the event, which brings riders from all over Australia to the Lake Macquarie area.

“Races do not just happen without the support of a host of stakeholders, from event volunteers through to organisers and supporters,” Mr Coppin said.

Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser said the council was pleased to support the event for another year.

“Last year’s event saw riders from across the country descend upon our city to compete at a world-class venue in a stunning natural setting within the Awaba State Forest,” Cr Fraser said.

“We can’t wait to once again welcome the competitors and spectators to Lake Macquarie, and I wish all the riders the very best of luck for the 2018 season.”

The Awaba Round 2 event is one of four rounds of

Thursday’s Jets game against Melbourne FC was both a win and a loss, with a 2-2 draw.

Before the match, the Jets were seven points behind Sydney FC and four ahead of Melbourne City, who then had a four-point lead on Melbourne Victory.

Should City have won, the gap on second place would have closed to a point, with the lead opening on Victory.

However, despite the best-laid plans, the draw resulted in both teams gaining a point on both Sydney and Victory.

A strong defensive scramble from Jets player Steven Ugarkovic stalled City, as he ran full-tilt down the pitch to beat the ball back from the Jets’ goalline and earned praise from players, spectators and commentators.

The Jets remain second on the A-League ladder at 34 points, and will battle Melbourne Victory at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday 3 February.

Fun run in your underwear Cupid’s Undie Run, a community fundraising event to support The Children’s Tumour Foundation, will be held on Sunday 18 February at Nobbys Beach promenade from 11.30am. Law on the Beach The University of Newcastle Legal Centre is bringing Law on the Beach back this summer for Novocastrians to seek free community legal advice.

Law on the Beach is a student-run program that gives later-year law and social work students the chance to gain practical experience towards their studies.

The clinic is open to everyone, but, this year, the centre is focusing on younger members of the community. Clinics will be held from 9.30am to 2.30pm at Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club (Newcastle Beach) on Wednesday 7 and Wednesday 21 February, as well as NeW Space (Hunter Street, Newcastle) on Wednesday 14 February.

Honest insight into female psyche Stand-up comedians Mandy Nolan and Ellen Briggs are two women on a mission; a mission to tell it how it is.

After two-and-a-half years on the road, the pair have chalked up an impressive 72 performances of their no-holds-barred show, Women Like Us. Almost 20,000 people from Moree to Melbourne, Townsville to Tamworth, Bundaberg to Brisbane, Surfers Paradise to Sydney, and Pottsville to Perth have witnessed Nolan and Briggs’ honest, “real-woman download”.

“We want our comedy to demystify a lot of the garbage that we’re fed about being women,” Briggs says.

“We tell everyday stories about our struggles: our failure to parent, the beauty industry, getting fatter, strange surgeries, obsessions, frustrations, and, at the end of the day, who unpacks the dishwasher.”

“Sure, we’re making jokes,” Nolan adds,

“but in the end, if you laugh at something, you disempower it.”

Nolan and Briggs pride themselves on speaking to a female demographic that doesn’t always hear its story told on stage.

Rockers take Bar on the Hill Melbourne rock legends The Smith Street Band are set to visit Newcastle in March on their first headline tour in almost a year.

Gallery’s golden jubilee Celebrating 50 years is an important milestone for any organisation, and this group of ceramic artists is proudly celebrating in 2018.

Newcastle Studio Potters Inc was formed in 1968 by an energetic group of potters who wanted to share ideas and techniques in the field of ceramics.

The group owns a large workshop space and the Back to Back Galleries. One gallery space is used for exhibitions, while the other houses a shop where members sell unique, locally-made pottery, both functional and non-functional.

The celebrations began with an exhibition of the work of current students who are tutored at the workshop.

In the following exhibitions planned for 2018, clay artists from Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Taiwan will bring their works to Newcastle.

The gallery will also host the exhibition that accompanies the Newcastle Writers’ Festival. Local artists are included in the 17 exhibitions.

In June there will be a joint exhibition with Central Coast Potters Society, with the theme of “Jubilee: 50 Years 50 Ceramic Pieces”. This group is also celebrating 50 years.

2018 also sees the return of the bi-annual exhibition, Small.

This year the theme is habitat – a valued refuge and resting place that supports life. Art that is inspired by the home, family and nurturing; or by culture, civilizations and architecture; or by environment, nature and our land.

This exhibition is supported by the Newcastle art community and beyond, and work in any medium is accepted, as long as each artwork measures no more than 15 centimetres in every direction.

Elle Clayton-Brown SURFER

Elle Clayton-Brown realised she wanted to be a pro surfer when she was 12. She grew up doing Nippers and then started surfing as well, so she has always had a special connection with the ocean, with dad Mark Watson taking Elle and her brother Mike to the beach every day. Elle’s first competition was the u/14 regional titles in 2015, which she won. That year, she balanced competitive surfing and competitive Nippers, but eventually, she made the choice to focus on surfing, which landed her a second-place finish in Wahu Kiama and third at Wahu Coffs. In 2016, Elle won regionals, finished fifth at state, and won the first female Mattara Surf Classic. She also attracted several sponsors, including Kaos Surf, JCD Surfboards and, more recently, SWOX and Burton Automotive. 2017 was a breakthrough year for Elle, taking a win in the Billabong Oz Grom Cup, third in several Surfaramas, first at regional titles and several more. After a run of good results, Elle went through a rocky patch, but she stayed positive and bounced back with second place at the Mattara Surf Classic and an Australian Allstars title with her teammate Nyxie. Her next competition is Surfest. Elle has one goal: to become a world champion.
