This week From the editor I'm a big believer in bucket lists, and I regularly tend to mine. As Helen Keller once said, "Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing".

Last weekend I got stuck into my bucket list early in 2018 with a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the gorgeous Hunter Valley with my aunt Nicole.

Aside from the 3am wakeup call (and even then, the excitement overrode the inconvenience), it was a spectacular experience. The flight was a lot smoother than I expected, and it was so peaceful in the air: the only noise the delighted murmurs from our fellow passengers and the occasional roar of the gas cylinders keeping us aloft.

2017 was a big year for my bucket list, scratching off a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon in Arizona, cycling across the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and reaching the top of the Rockefeller Centre in New York City. What can I say? I live for adventure.

This year, even if I don't cross as many big-ticket items off my list (for one thing, I'm not planning a major holiday like the USA‌ yet), I'm resolving to find adventure in the everyday. A New Year's resolution, of sorts.

No matter how you rang in the new year, I hope it's off to a grand start. And, if not, there's plenty of time to change that.

news Frustration over bus route changes It’s been a familiar routine for Jane Musgrave.

The Adamstown Heights resident catches the bus on route 322 with her wheelchair-bound daughter Amelia so they can attend medical appointments and social outings.

But the convenient stop on Northcott Drive is set to be removed as part of sweeping changes to Newcastle Transport’s bus and ferry network, which will come into effect on Sunday 14 January.

Ms Musgrave believes the two closest options from then on, along the Pacific Highway, near Kahibah Road, and Park Avenue, Kotara, are fraught with danger.

Since her husband, David, needs the family’s only car for work in the city, she will have to push 10-year-old Amelia, who is blind, epileptic and non-verbal, around a winding, uneven footpath and across Lexington Parade, where cars come from three directions, before labouring up a hill.

“We have got a car and, in desperate situations, [David] can come and pick us up,” Ms Musgrave says.

“But Amelia and I do like our independence, especially during the school holidays, and she does

have a lot of appointments.

“It’s not just about us though, I’m speaking for people who don’t have a voice.

“I’m thinking of elderly people, who have had the bus route for all these years, and those with special needs, who had to learn [the route].”

Newcastle Transport, which has released new timetables ahead of the network’s launch, opted to change route numbers to double digits.

For instance, route 322 will be replaced by route 22 (Charlestown to Newcastle Interchange via Kahibah, Merewether and Marketown) and route 48 (Belmont to Warners Bay via Redhead, Dudley and Charlestown).

Private operator Keolis Downer says the network will provide more than a thousand extra services, better connections and increased frequency across Newcastle and eastern Lake Macquarie.

But the company’s Hunter general manager, Mark Dunlop, urged people to plan ahead.

“Most bus routes have been revised and new routes have been added, so I encourage customers to be prepared,” he says.

news Council sprouts waste plan Newcastle City Council believes the creation of a new organics recycling plant will save thousands of tonnes of waste and at least $800,000 a year in state government landfill levies.

“That’s a significant sum going back into the local economy every year, rather than into state coffers,” the council’s chief executive officer, Jeremy Bath, says.

A development application for the $12.8 million facility is expected to be lodged in the first half of the year.

It will be built at the council’s existing Summerhill Waste Management Centre at Wallsend, with a capacity to recycle 50,000 tonnes of organic annual waste.

Newcastle’s residential organic waste is currently shredded at Summerhill before being sent to Muswellbrook for processing.

“The opening of this facility in

2020-21 will close the loop on our city’s organic waste cycle,” Mr Bath says.

“It will take organic waste produced across the LGA and convert it into soil conditioner, compost and mulch to be reused by the local community.

“This is a win for the city and a win for the environment, and contributes significantly towards council’s sustainable development goals.”

According to the council, 30 to 50% of the material that ends up in general residential waste comprises food organics that could be recycled by the new plant.

The creation of the new facility could prompt more effective ways to handle the city’s waste.

The council has no immediate plans to change kerbside waste collection in the area.

news No chamber of secrets Business chambers across Lake Macquarie are set to share skills, knowledge and resources this year in a bid to show a united front.

Warners Bay Chamber of Commerce president, Murray Halyburton, says there’s a push to join forces and “support each other, rather than trying to outdo each other”.

Mr Halyburton, who took up the position in November, believes it will be beneficial to operate as a combined chamber, particularly on widespread issues, while he also plans to coordinate events and improve communication between chambers.

“When we have issues likely to affect us all, we can go and petition as a group on behalf of all businesses in Lake Macquarie,” he tells Newcastle Weekly.

“We are hoping that will be a

much more effective approach to [Lake Macquarie] council.

“We’ll try to get a combined chamber up and running, so we will hopefully amalgamate and centralise some things.

“It’s about working more smartly as a group.”

As for Warners Bay, Mr Halyburton is fully aware the ongoing foreshore redevelopment, as well as drawcard events like the annual Lake Mac Big Weekend, will attract even more people to the area.

He admits the suburb will look very different over the next 12 months, but hopes the chamber, and its members, can take advantage of the changes.

“There is a lot of development going on and you get a lot of different responses – some people view it as a positive, others as a

negative,” he says.

“But it doesn’t take much to see that a lot of cafes and restaurants are full of people and that’s always a good sign – it’s an indication of what’s going on here.

“For too long, Warners Bay

has been left to its own devices in terms of investment, but developers are finally seeing the jewel that it is and are pouring millions and millions into the area because of that.”

news Options for Camp Shortland A children’s bike track and outdoor gym equipment have been nominated as the preferred options for the restoration of Camp Shortland, near Nobbys, following Newcastle’s annual Supercars event.

Newcastle council sought community feedback on potential ways to use the space. Around two-thirds of 334 survey respondents preferred not to returf part of the Newcastle 500 track that runs through the coastal park, with 149 instead giving the thumbs up to a children’s bike track.

An outdoor gym finished a close second with 147 nods, while 125 people leant towards a children’s play area and 118 supported planter boxes, seating and shade. Grassing over the eastern hairpin arm was preferred by 38% of survey respondents, but would deny access to the park each summer as newly-laid turf knitted and grew.

Merewether Beach’s top honour Merewether Beach has beaten the likes of Bondi Beach and Surfers Paradise to the title of Australia’s best city beach.

The home of next month’s Surfest competition was ranked among the nation’s best beaches overall in the 101 Best Australian Beaches list, which cited it as the region’s “blue jewel in the crown”.

However, the citation made special mention of Merewether Beach evolving to become the best city beach in Australia. Lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes said that, with summer in full swing and Surfest just around the corner, it was easy to see why Merewether had gained such recognition.

A popular New Year’s resolution, up there with losing weight, is spending less time glued to digital devices.

In 2018, more Australians than ever are looking to form healthier relationships with their smartphones, according to clinical psychologist Jenny McGee at rehab centre The Buttery Private.

“Like many addictions, problematic internet use is a coping behaviour people use just to get some time out from the stress and overwhelm they are feeling,” Ms McGee says.

The fifth annual National Stress and Wellbeing in Australia Survey found more than one in 10 Australians reported keeping up with social media networks contributed to their overall stress level.

The survey also found one in two people felt they were “missing out” on the seemingly perfect lives that others portray through social media.

So, if you feel like you need to take a break,

what’s the best way to go about a digital detox?

There’s no one-size-fits-all method, but there are a few things, aside from going cold turkey, that might help you regain control over your social media and internet use.

time out Into the great beyond There are many conflicting views on what happens in the afterlife, but the one thing most of us can agree on is that explaining death to children can be challenging.

Enter: Where Did They Go? – a picture book written by Cooks Hill clairvoyant KatrinaJane Bart and beautifully illustrated by Allison Warry.

When a child loses someone they love, whether a relative, friend or pet, it is difficult to put into words what has happened in a way that they understand.

Where Did They Go? aims to explain to children that, although not physically with them anymore, their loved ones are always watching over them.

The book can be personalised with the name of the person who has passed.

Bart drew inspiration for the book from friends of the family.

Four-year-old Archie and two-year-old Stella lost their beloved dad, Alex, to testicular cancer.

When the adults explained to Archie that his dad was journeying into the sky, Archie simply

asked: “Can I catch a plane [to see him]?”

Completely moved by the experience, Bart sprang into action and set about writing the book. She knew she had to use Archie’s exact words.

“His response was so typical of children when we try and explain [death] to them,” she told Newcastle Weekly.

“They have such vivid imaginations. [As a clairvoyant] I have so many people ask me how to deal with this, so I wrote the book for them.”

The third title to come from Bart, Where Did They Go? was self-published in 2016 and has won three awards: the 5th Annual Beverly Hills International Book Award 2016 (children non-fiction), the Book Excellence Award 2016 (children non-fiction), and the Independent Book Award 2017 (children non-fiction).

Bart hopes the book will become a resource, including in schools, for educating children about death.

Nobbys Head shines bright in spotlight For more than 200 years, Nobbys Head has caught the eye of artists, photographers, visitors and locals like.

The headland, which offers sweeping views of the city, harbour and the Pacific Ocean, is arguably one of Newcastle’s most iconic landmarks.

But did you know, public protests in the mid-1850s stopped a state government proposal to blow up the headland in its tracks?

This is one of the stories Lambton author Julie Keating illustrates in her latest title, Newcastle’s Harbour Foreshore: the first hundred years.

Following on from Newcastle’s Hunter Street: the first hundred years, the new book tells of how the government proposal deemed that the beautiful headland obstructed the harbour’s entrance, which would adversely affect the port’s use.

The headland was retained after community uproar, however, the top section was cut away to make a level space for Nobbys Lighthouse.

time out Drawing on experience Gallery 139’s fourth year in business is shaping up to be the biggest and best yet – but not without the support of so many local artists.

Director Ahn Wells says, after three years, she’s really starting to get the hang of how the gallery works, and has 17 group and solo exhibitions locked and loaded for 2018.

Many of whom Wells terms “Gallery Artists” will be returning to the fold this year, including the likes of Peter Lankas and Paul Maher.

These artists have supported Gallery 139 since its inception.

The first exhibition, opening this Saturday 13 January at 2pm, is titled The Doggie Show (dogs welcome).

Support comes in strides

When it comes to setting and sticking to New Year’s resolutions, fitness sensation Tiffiny Hall’s advice is: don’t.

“New Year’s resolutions are rigid and unrealistic; they set you up for pass or fail,” the TIFFXO online program founder and former coach on The Biggest Loser tells Newcastle Weekly.

“Instead, focus on a goal. When you have it, make a plan and a strategy to achieve it.

“Better yet, get someone to help you. When there’s someone to hold you accountable, you’re less likely to cancel.”

Arnold, whom she and husband Ed Kavalee welcomed last September, the importance of support in setting and achieving goals is not lost on Tiff.

“I love logging on [to TIFFXO] and providing daily support and encouragement to my community of ninjas,” she says.

“Not only that, it’s fantastic to see them supporting one another.”

Tiff coached on three seasons of The Biggest Loser over four years.

A highlight for Tiff was The Biggest Loser Australia: Families (2011), which starred Novocastrian twins Meg McGrice and Emma Duncan, with whom Tiff still keeps in touch.

Emma was crowned the series’ biggest loser overall, shedding an impressive 62 kilograms.

Her sister lost 57 kilograms, and, although she didn’t claim any winnings, Meg says the series provided a few invaluable lessons.

But perhaps the hardest part of the twins’ weight loss journey was what followed, after the

cameras stopped rolling.

Each relied on a different vice: for Meg, it was alcohol, while for Emma, it was sugar.

It took them a couple of years to find what worked for them, to enable them to continue to manage their weight, but they haven’t looked back since.

Meg opened a gym in Adamstown in 2012, which she ran until she had her first-born, Austin, in 2016.

Now 21 weeks’ pregnant with her second child, Meg has found her groove in female running group The Night Striders and Running Mums Australia.

Emma is also a night strider, and has successfully completed two ultra-marathons – something that was never on the cards before.

“The most important thing is just making a start,” Emma says.

“Even if it’s only a small step, like cutting back on junk food or going for a walk around the block – it’s still a step in the right direction.”

Summer fruits Pears, apples and oranges: I couldn’t give a ‘fig’ about them. Bring on the cherries any day.

There are only certain fruits I love, and they are the summer fruits – not quite what the nutritionists would like to read, but nothing beats the juice of a mango oozing down your chin!

It would be great if we could grow cherries.

Unfortunately, these beauties are restricted to cooler climates, and their production is shortlived. That is why we pay a premium for them.

However, we can grow mangoes, which grow up to 20 metres high with a huge canopy, therefore a larger garden is needed.

Mangoes require a sunny position with fertile soil.

Apart from normal feeding, trace elements should be applied to discourage fruit drop.

Avocados, like mangoes, lose blossom to the winds. They need warm, humid conditions to produce fruit, and take from five to 14 months to mature, depending on the variety.

Stone fruit – although I love them, sliced in a summer salad – do require some attention to avoid fruit fly.

If you live in the city and aren’t prepared to take the precautions, don’t grow stone fruit. It is virtually impossible to keep out fruit fly, which results in crops full of grubs.

Part of the answer is to clean up fallen fruit, bag it and bin it and use a fruit fly lure, which can be replaced at minimal cost when the bait is full.

DANCING A bit of a change of pace from what I usually get up to, but partner dancing is one of the most social things I have done. Dancing is a great way to meet new people and catch up with friends.

Aaron Morris MOTORCYCLE RIDER

Aaron started riding in 1992 at the age of three, following in the footsteps of his father Graeme Morris – an Australian Supersport champion. At age 16, he entered his first road race. The talented Novocastrian quickly realised that, if he wanted to win, he needed to know his machine, so he became a licensed motorcycle mechanic. Years later, Aaron placed second in the Australian Superstock Championships (2010), and finished runner-up in the Australian Supersport title (2013), before coming first in the Australasian Supersport Championships (2014) and ninth in the Endurance World Championship (2016). After taking a break from racing as funds dried up, his passion for road racing was reignited when he entered a single round of the Australian Supersport Championships and emerged victorious from his first race. Aaron will compete in the 2018 Australian Superbike Championship. He has high ambitions but, with a limited budget, it will be a difficult year ahead.
