This week...

From the editor Well, here we are at the last edition of 2017. Next stop: 2018! This week we bring you our annual swimwear issue. It'll be in stands for two weeks instead of the usual one, while we take a week's break from publishing, so it's packed with goodness to see you through the summer holidays. The location for our swimwear shoot was a no-brainer. It's none other than our iconic Newcastle Ocean Baths, and, boy, did the weather turn it on. The lovely mum-of-one Ashlee Burraston models our pick of the in-season swimwear from three local boutiques, plus a Newcastle-based designer. Special thanks goes to hair and makeup artists Dean Blaq and Mitch Wynn, who've helped us, pro bono, on a few occasions now. They're the reason our glam cover stars look camera-ready! Once you've perused our swimwear special (pages 37-39), flip to page 41 for all your beach and pool party essentials. There's loads of fun to be had, so jump in (see what I did there). Newcastle Weekly will be taking a short break over the holiday period. Our office will be closed from Thursday 21 December to Wednesday 3 January, inclusive. We will reopen at 9am on Thursday 4 January. We wish all our readers and their families a safe and happy holiday season. - Georgia Osland

Belmont Bowling Club and Belmont Golf Club presidents Trevor Gasson and Lyn Cooper discuss the amalgamation. Photo: Peter Stoop
Members back Belmont merger There will be a twist in Belmont Bowling Club’s proud 87-year history. After going through financial difficulties, the club decided it had to look for a new home. President Trevor Gasson says the search has been a long and exhausting process. “Our journey started about 18 months ago when my board came to a decision where we believed that we needed to relocate,” Mr Gasson says. “We were struggling as a separate unit; it’s a competitive market in Belmont and we also lost a bowling green in the April 2015 Superstorm. “So, for two years, we’ve only had one green, which has had a serious impact on us.” The organisation called for expressions of interest to amalgamate in February and received a response, among others, from Belmont Golf Club. Earlier this month, members of both clubs voted to back the merger. Belmont Bowling Club also sought, and found, a buyer for the land, with agents Colliers International sealing the deal on a reported $4.8 million sale. “We’re at the point now where the amalgamation has to be approved by OLGR
[Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing], and that is expected in March,” Mr Gasson says. “[Finding a buyer] means we can pay our own way – there’ll be no borrowing from the golf club to facilitate us, which is the icing on the cake.” The golf club will build two covered, synthetic bowling greens at its Marks Point site, with construction set to start in June. Belmont Golf Club general manager Glenn Howard believes the merger will be a win-win for both organisations. “We were looking at ways to diversify,” he says. “The greens will be a great attraction and will hopefully allow us to host major bowling events in Lake Macquarie.” Mr Howard says members voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining forces with the bowling club. “We had 418 [people] there and it was 417 to one, which is a great indication that our members saw the chance to change and diversify as a great thing for our club,” he says. “The bowling club will retain its identity and we’ll continue to recognise their history.” - Ben Murphy

news Police holiday crackdown
Keep watch these holidays Redirecting mail, mowing the lawn and placing floor lamps on timers. These tips may seem simple to some, but they can make a real difference in deterring criminals from breaking into your home over the holiday period. Neighbourhood Watch Hunter Area Coordinator, Bill Hackney, says you don’t have to be a “stickybeak” to keep an eye out for suspicious behaviour. “One of our key sayings is: ‘If you see something, say something,’” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “It might not seem important, but it can turn out to be. “You should be familiar with your neighbours’ movements and, if you see something different, have their contact numbers to let them know if it doesn’t seem right.” Mr Hackney believes the role of Neighbourhood Watch has “turned
a corner and evolved” over the past 30 years. The Metford resident, who sits on the NSW Police Neighbourhood Watch Advisory Board, says police officers and paramedics know there is still a need for it within the community. “These days, we’re very social media-based and the information is available to all members 24/7,” he says. “It has needed to change with its audience to be up-to-date in this day and age – we’ve taken a lot of steps to do that and adapt to today’s society.” Since Mr Hackney took over in his role as lead coordinator, 14 Neighbourhood Watch groups have popped up in the Hunter Region. His other tips for keeping your home and possessions safe these holidays include: make sure all

doors, windows and vehicles are locked; arrange for residents to put out and collect bins; consider a house-sitter; be social media savvy (don’t post about your holiday); check that all sensor lights and security systems are working; and ensure valuables aren’t visible. NSW Police is urging holidaymakers to stay safe on our roads during the busy Christmas and New Year period. Double demerits will be in place from Friday 22 December to Monday 1 January, inclusive, with police targeting a number of offences, including speeding, drink and drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt, and illegal mobile phone use. If you’re travelling throughout the holiday season, make sure you allow plenty of time to get from A to B, and take breaks as needed. As at 18 December, 372 people had died on NSW roads in 2017 – one more fatality than 2016 in its entirety.

As 2017 draws to a close, it’s a great time to reflect on the year that was. But, while some of us wrap up school and work for the year and switch to holiday mode, others may find the festive season difficult, particularly those experiencing isolation, loneliness, or mental health issues. Young people – in particular high school leavers – may find they need a little extra support, as they brace for big life changes over the coming months. Families and friends are key in helping a young person seek support. It’s important to know the signs and symptoms that indicate a young person might need help. Being withdrawn, not wanting to hang out with friends, not doing the things they would normally enjoy, and ongoing worry or
irritability are just some of the things to look out for. National Youth Mental Health Foundation, headspace, says, as a parent, guardian or carer of a young person, you can: encourage them to stay connected and involved, get them to partake in physical activity, and strive to keep a regular routine. If you are a young person, it’s important to eat and sleep well, be socially active, and take time to relax. Some activities to try during the holidays include working a casual job, finding a new hobby or place to explore, working on a creative project, getting active or volunteering. If you need support or advice, headspace can help. Phone your local headspace centre, or visit headspace.org.au
Christmas with a cause A bit of a self-professed Grinch, Christmas Day for The Happy Wombat owner Luke Tilse is a little unconventional. Every year for the past three years, Luke has opened the Hunter Street boutique bar and restaurant for a few hours on Christmas Day, donating about half of the proceeds to an environmental cause. This year will be no different, with the venue serving takeaway coffee and baked goods from 8am to 11am. Everything raised above and beyond staff wages will be donated to charity, and, although Luke hasn’t nominated one yet, you can be certain it’ll be well thought out. Last year, the venue raised about $1,500 for Devil Ark – the largest Tasmanian Devil conservation breeding program on mainland Australia, based at the Barrington Tops. “It’s hard enough to get people to donate anything at all to charity, but when they do, nine times out of 10 it’s for people, whereas we’re wiping out huge numbers of species and no one seems to care,” Luke says. Having undertaken environmental studies, Luke knew from the outset he wanted to incorporate his passion for planet Earth into his hospitality career when he opened The Happy Wombat, and that’s

exactly what he’s done. For someone who, much to his wife’s dismay, believes Christmas is more about kids than it is about adults, Luke says opening the restaurant is actually a very apt way of celebrating. “We’ve got carols playing, the Christmas tree is up and we’re doing something good for the environment: you don’t get much more Christmassy than that,” he says. - Georgia Osland
The University of Newcastle’s Laureate Professor Nicholas Talley has been named Australia’s mostcited academic, according to a Google Scholar report. Professor Talley has earned the highest ranking among the top 1,000 scientists from Australian institutions. And, it’s not hard to see why. Professor Talley is a global authority in neurogastroenterology and incurable functional gut disorders, which affect more than one in five Australians. His recent work linking the gut as a major driver of anxiety and other changes in the brain has contributed to a paradigm shift in the way we understand how the gut interacts with the brain.

Councillors unanimously back wetlands proposal A motion that sought Port Stephens Council’s support to buy back a parcel of land within Mambo Wetlands has passed unanimously. Councillor Jaimie Abbott put forward a proposal at the council’s latest meeting. The motion asked for the council to recognise: the high biodiversity values of Wanda and Mambo Wetlands, and the community’s aspiration to see all underdeveloped blocks consolidated into a single, protected reserve; the need for the proposed declaration of Aboriginal places at Wanda and Mambo Wetlands to be prioritised and completed as soon as possible; the need for an updated management plan to be prepared in consultation with the community; and the need to seek funding from the state government to proceed. Cr Abbott’s motion came after the former NSW Department of Education school site within Mambo Wetlands – near prime Koala habitat – was sold by the state government last year for $250,000 in an online auction. In November, Port Stephens Council praised the site’s owner for withdrawing a development application for a dual-occupancy home. The Mambo-Wanda Wetlands Conservation Group has created a petition to return the land to public ownership, with 10,000 signatures required to guarantee parliamentary debate. You can find a copy of the petition on the group’s Facebook page.

Fifty years at the drive-in When moviegoers pulled into Heddon Greta Drive-In on its opening night in 1967, they were treated to a screening of To Sir, With Love. Now, 50 years on, the theatre’s owner, Scott Seddon, saw an opportunity to not only mark the milestone, but also help the Richmond Vale Railway Museum. The museum set up a Rebuilding Richi Appeal after much of its historic fleet was damaged by a bushfire in September. Mr Seddon said all gate takings from this week’s one-time only screening of To Sir, With Love would be donated to the appeal. “I thought it’d just be good to celebrate the 50th anniversary and help the Richmond Vale museum,” he said. “If you were them, you would’ve just wept [after the bushfire].” Museum spokesperson, Graham
Smith, praised Mr Seddon’s gesture. “Scott’s offer came out of the blue really and we’re very grateful,” he said. “We have raised more than $26,000 so far, which is a great effort in such little time, and we plan to organise other fundraisers in the new year.” The Heddon Greta Drive-In was originally opened by Greater Union in December 1967. It closed twice during the mid-1980s to early 1990s, but was reopened by Mr Seddon, along with the help of family and friends, on 26 March 1996. “We reopened it with Babe and Apollo 13,” Mr Seddon said. “That was just after the Oscars too, so it couldn’t have been better timing. “It’s just an experience [at the drive-in] that people will remember – there are only two in NSW, so it’s

as much about the experience as it is about the movies.” Heddon Greta Drive-In’s next screening will be Jumanji, along with a second, yet-to-be-confirmed film on Tuesday 26 December. Gates open at 7.30pm.

news Green light for rail rezoning Newcastle City Council has given the green light for the former heavy rail corridor to be rezoned. The council’s decision clears the way for the Department of Planning and Environment’s final approval to change the land use along the 1.53-kilometre strip between Worth Place and Newcastle Station. A phone survey of 955 residents, conducted by ReachTEL, saw 57.5% of people support mixed-use development, as well as university or recreational uses, along the old corridor, while 34.7% called for the rail zoning to remain in place. A council report stated there were also 226 public submissions and 46 form letters in favour of the rezoning. However, the same report
showed 394 submissions and 137 form letters were against it. “During consultation, the community has supported a well-considered mix of open space, residential and commercial space, with affordable housing and educational and tourist facilities,” Newcastle lord mayor Nuatali Nelmes says. Some of the changes on the land will include: education between Worth Place and Civic Station; mixed use (including affordable housing) between Civic and Merewether Street; public recreation at Civic, and from Perkins Street to Newcomen Street; a mix of dwellings, retail, commercial and public recreation from Merewether Street to Brown Street; and a tourism zone at Newcastle Station.
End of the road for Beresfield Driver Reviver It will be the end of an era when Morisset Lions Club’s caravan pulls out of the Beresfield Driver Reviver site for the last time. The busiest rest stop in Australia is set to officially close on 1 January so work can begin on the M1 Pacific Motorway upgrade at Weakleys Drive and John Renshaw Drive intersection. The Beresfield Driver Reviver has been operated by the Morisset Lions Club for the past 23 years, with about 15,000 cups of tea and coffee handed out to tired souls each holiday period. Site manager Arthur Tumeth says it has helped reduce the road toll. “It is hard to quantify, but there is no doubt it’s saved lives,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “From the way some people have driven in there and stopped for a coffee, they’ve been half asleep.” Mr Tumeth says Driver Reviver has been an exhausting, but extremely important, project for Morisset Lions Club. “We’d operate for up to 60 days a year, 24 hours a day,” he says. “[On average] about 40,000 people would come
through here every year, although it’s been a fair bit less this year because people think it’s already closed. “It’s just been a massive effort to man this caravan, especially for 17 to 18 days straight over Christmas; you’d do around six shifts a day, and generally 100 shifts [all up]. “I don’t think this sort of service will continue anywhere else.” Mr Tumeth says many people who stopped at the site ended up donating to Morisset Lions Club, with the generous contributions going straight back into the local community. Over the years, the club has been able to provide, among many other items, three boats to Sailability NSW – a volunteer-run organisation that strives to improve access to sailing activities for people with a disability. After the Driver Reviver’s closure, the RMS advises that alternative rest stops nearby include: Beresfield BP on John Renshaw Drive; Beresfield Caltex on Weakleys Drive; as well as others at Heatherbrae and Twelve Mile Creek. - Ben Murphy

news Survivor breaks the silence Like a phoenix from the ashes, Newcastle woman Bec Acopio has risen above sexual assault to publish a book she believes could provide a beacon of hope for other women. Ms Acopio was sexually assaulted in three separate incidents a little over 20 years ago, after arriving in Australia from the Philippines. She said her struggle after the assaults led her to attempt suicide more than once. “I have experienced extreme depression, severe anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, [and] Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of these assaults,” she said. Her book, I Did Not Give Them My Consent, is a tale of recovery. “The book is one way for me not to be ashamed or to remain silent

any longer,” Ms Acopio said. “I want to help other women to speak out sooner than I did, and to know they can get help through talking to people.” Rather than turn to alcohol, drugs or medication to mask her pain, Ms Acopio sought help from Lifeline, the Heal for Life Foundation and other psychologists. And, Lifeline was there to support her again, last week, when she launched her book at the Hunter Central Coast office in Islington. The launch could not have come at a more appropriate time, given the recent allegations of sexual misconduct against Hollywood stars Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey, as well as Australian TV personality Don Burke. In Australia, one in five women will experience sexual assault in

their lifetime, but less than one in five will report the crime to the police, meaning many suffer in silence. Member for Maitland and shadow minister for the prevention of domestic violence and sexual assault, Jenny Aitchison, who attended the book launch, praised
Ms Acopio for speaking out. “It shouldn’t matter who you are, how old you are, what your relationship with the perpetrator is, or where you are when it happens: rape is rape,” Ms Aitchison said. The book is available from Booktopia and Amazon, with 10% of the proceeds donated to Lifeline.

news Donation bolsters rural medical care In the spirit of the season, the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) has received a $5.2 million philanthropic gift. It is the largest single donation in the HMRI’s history, and is tipped to strengthen medical care in rural communities. The generous donation will be used to help advance emergency out-of-hospital paramedical treatment and telehealth care for patients across the state over the next five years, under a collaboration between the HMRI, NSW Ambulance and the Hunter New England Local Health District. Together, they aim to maintain paramedics’ confidence and competence when treating out-ofhospital emergencies, such as cardiac arrest, and reduce hospitalisations by referring low-acuity patients to other pathways, thus easing emergency department demand. The gift will allow NSW Ambulance training facilities to be upgraded and new education equipment bought, including advanced technology simulation mannequins, as well as extra staff secured. The program’s rollout will start in rural NSW.
HMRI director, Professor Michael Nilsson, said the donor, who wished to remain anonymous, was motivated to provide support to improve access to high-quality care, particularly for vulnerable and rural communities. “A person’s postcode shouldn’t impact their medical care,” Professor Nilsson said. “We can address the current imbalance by mobilising medicine and furnishing regional communities with more sophisticated telehealth technologies.” Hunter New England Local Health District executive director of partnerships, innovation and research, Jane Gray, said the program built on the local health district’s long-term goals of keeping people healthy and in their communities by providing world-class clinical services and timely access to healthcare. “As one of the largest local health districts in NSW, our challenge is to ensure we deliver consistent, quality healthcare, regardless of where people live,” she said. The NSW Ambulance Service also extended its gratitude.
Grant windfall for Maitland Several Maitland community groups have received a funding windfall to implement projects. For the first time, $300,000 worth of Community Building Partnership grants was up for grabs this year. In previous years, the state government had allocated $200,000 to the Maitland electorate, despite many other electorates across the state receiving $300,000. This year’s successful applicants included Maitland PCYC ($41,505 to upgrade the facility’s music room); the City of Maitland Pipes and Drums ($20,575 to replace the hall’s guttering and downpipes); Norm Chapman Oval at Rutherford ($20,000 to upgrade the amenities and canteen); and the East Maitland War Memorial & Rest Park Trust ($16,027 to improve access to the memorial). If you have an idea for an infrastructure project to promote community cohesion, phone Maitland MP Jenny Aitchison’s office on 4933 1617, or email maitland@parliament.nsw.gov.au

Grand plans for cities’ futures An extension of the Fernleigh Track, improvements at Green Point Foreshore Reserve and a new surf club at Catherine Hill Bay are just some of the key projects under a $64 million infrastructure plan for southeastern Lake Macquarie. The draft plan, which has been unveiled by Lake Macquarie council and will be funded by developer contributions, aims to cater for an extra 7,250 people by 2030. It also includes an upgrade to Swansea Swim Centre, sports fields, parks, playgrounds, a library refurbishment, dog exercise areas, community gardens, and BMX tracks. Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser says the plan proposes exciting new community facilities for the growing area between Belmont and Moonee. “The plan identifies 44 open space and recreation projects with a value of more than $54 million, as well as upgrades to community facilities, including the refurbishment of Belmont Library and expansion of the Swansea Combined Pensioners and Community Care Centre,” Cr Fraser says. Meanwhile, the state government’s first Draft Metropolitan Plan for Greater Newcastle – encompassing Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Cessnock, Maitland and Port Stephens – will be on public display

until 28 February. The plan has been developed by the Department of Planning and Environment, with the help of councils and stakeholders. It sets out four key goals to reach by 2036, which include: a growing entrepreneurial economy; a rich natural environment; a wide variety of housing and jobs to choose from; and thriving communities. Visit planning.nsw.gov.au to have your say.
Community shares Christmas spirit The spirit of Christmas shone through for Hamilton Uniting Church’s Trees and Art for Charity project, raising a whopping $6,738. Throughout December, 15 decorated Christmas trees stood tall in the church, each one representing a local charity. Visitors were asked to vote for their favourite tree by making a small donation. The cheery volunteers at Bill’s Café were busy every day, providing light meals, coffee, tea and cakes. The Hunter Women Artists & Friends also donated 25% from each artwork sold during its exhibition to the charities involved. Those who visited the church throughout the year also contributed by purchasing a secondhand book for $1. This small gesture in itself raised a collective $2,253.

Dimi Petratos celebrates after scoring against Adelaide. Photo: Getty Images
Late Petratos penalty seals another Jets victory Newcastle playmaker Dimi Petratos held his nerve to slot a late penalty as the Jets snatched a 2-1 win over Adelaide at the weekend. A slow start to the game saw both sides struggle to create chances, but Newcastle sprang to life after the half-time break. In the 54th minute, Petratos looked to make space inside the 18-yard box but he was quickly closed down by Adelaide midfielder Vince Lia. However, the ball deflected off Lia and fell at the feet of Andrew Nabbout, who managed to swivel and bury his shot into the bottom right corner to give the Jets the lead. After going behind, Adelaide tried desperately to respond, and they eventually did so via George
Blackwood in the 67th minute. Defender Michael Marrone surged down the right flank and delivered a perfect cross for Blackwood to tap home. It was starting to look like both sides would share the spoils but, in the 87th minute, Petratos weaved his way into the box and struck a shot that ricocheted into the arm of Adelaide’s Ryan Strain. Petratos kept his cool to slot the penalty, much to the delight of more than 8,000 fans inside McDonald Jones Stadium. The Jets’ next three fixtures are against Western Sydney at home on Friday 22 December; Melbourne Victory away on Friday 29 December; and Sydney FC away on Wednesday 3 January. All games kick off at 7.50pm.
Buderus joins coaching ranks Newcastle Knights legend Danny Buderus has joined a new-look NSW coaching team ahead of next year’s State of Origin series. Buderus, who made 21 Origin appearances and captained the Blues on 15 occasions, agreed to become Brad Fittler’s assistant. Fittler replaced Laurie Daley in the top job after Queensland claimed its 11th series’ win out of the past 12 earlier this year. The Blues’ new management team also includes former NSW forward Paul Sironen and North Queensland football manager Peter Parr.

time out ‘People just love Elvis’
Ben Portsmouth grew up on a diet of Elvis Presley songs. After deciding to take on the persona of ‘The King’ as a tribute artist, Portsmouth’s career has gone from strength-to-strength. Fans from around the world declare him as the closest they have seen to Elvis, while social media forums are reportedly overwhelmed with supporters demanding his return to their country.
Now, he’ll bring his The King Is Back worldwide tour to Australian shores this January. Portsmouth says it’s “flattering” to be in such high demand. “At the end of the day, people just love Elvis,” he tells Newcastle Weekly. “I do a show where I take people through the story and era of Elvis – the first half is how he started out, the poignant parts of his life, and the

time out Peter Pan’s parallel universe From the same young playwright who brought you the CONDAnominated Do Your Parents Know You’re Straight in May, Bearfoot Theatre presents the classic tale of Peter Pan with a dark twist. Directed by Riley McLean in conjunction with Cassie Hamilton and Genevieve Lawson, Take Me to Neverland is not what you’d expect from this much-loved fairytale. Despite its title, and its holiday timeslot (11 to 13 January at the Civic Playhouse), the play is far from a fairytale, and is directed at more mature audiences (contains violence). Whilst fun and light-hearted at times, and based on the stories of Peter Pan (Tom Rodgers) and Wendy (Savannah Geddes), Take Me to Neverland explores dark themes such as mental health,
touching on violence and intense psychological trauma. Trapped in an institution and unable to fly, Peter struggles to distinguish between real and make-believe. How will he find his way back to Neverland, and how will the children in the orphanage learn to grow up when Peter wants them to stay young and lost forever? Other cast members include Grace Alston, Konstanze Koedam, Taylor Reece, Bonnie McPeak, Harry Lyddiard and Sam Hawkins. Bearfoot Theatre is a new theatre company in association with Eclectic Productions, with a focus on producing original works. Tickets to Take Me to Neverland are available from civictheatrenewcastle.com.au

time out The suite life in Sydney Just two-and-a-half hours south of Newcastle, Sydney’s accessibility is not lost on Novocastrians. Many of us won’t hesitate to zip down the highway for a mid-week or weekend getaway. And why shouldn’t we take advantage of our metropolitan neighbour? Life in the big smoke is exciting, energetic and revitalising; at every turn there’s something new to marvel at. When Fraser Suites Sydney generously hosted Newcastle Weekly overnight, this journalist packed more into 24 hours than sometimes she achieves in an entire weekend. With a commanding presence on Kent Street, there’s no way to mistake the hotel for anywhere other than Sydney’s bustling CBD. Everything is at your fingertips, with a plethora of restaurants, cafés, bars, pubs and shopping centres to suit

From Copenhagen’s design culture to literary Cape Cod, via artisanal Marrakesh and Medici Florence, Culture Trails by Lonely Planet is a comprehensive guide to 52 weekends of cultural heaven. “When we travel,” Lonely Planet says, “the cultures of the countries we visit are usually what we notice first, and it is often what inspires us to visit in the first place.” This new title follows the tradition of Lonely Planet’s best-selling Food Trails (2016) and Wine Trails (2015), and features expert recommendations, maps and practical details.

Try matcha tea as a coffee alternative. Matcha is a fine, green powder derived from tea leaves. Through its rich form of antioxidants, the tea prevents heart disease, cancer, reduces blood pressure and boosts metabolism. A healthier alternative to coffee, which contains 60mg of caffeine, one cup of matcha provides 34mg, and the effects last longer due to the natural substance called L-theanine.

While 2.1 litres of water may sound unrealistic, our top tip is to keep a bottle of water with you at all times and sip away. Dehydration causes fatigue, confusion and drowsiness.
5. Drink like the queen While green tea only contains 24-40 mg of caffeine, it’s rich in antioxidants, giving you the energy effects of coffee without the jitters. Black tea provides the caffeine hit while carrying antioxidants, vitamins, and other stimulants that keep you alert, active and stress-free. Another great alternative is mint tea, helping to activate your brain, prevent fatigue and memory loss.
6. Crunch away It’s true: an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Containing a natural form of sugar called fructose, an apple is a healthy snack that reduces fatigue without the crash in the afternoon. Additionally, apples contain good carbohydrates, which allow your body to keep moving.
7. Get outdoors A short walk might be all it takes to recharge your batteries. Studies have shown that exposure to the sun and vitamin D improves alertness and performance. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium, fostering bone health, reducing heart disease and boosting your immune system.

PICK OF THE WEEK Paddington
Jaws
Saturday, GO!, 6.30pm, G (2014) The popular British bear makes his first big-screen appearance in this live-action film directed by Paul King. Those familiar with Michael Bond’s classic British kids books will know the Peruvian bear’s story, but this sweet, quaint tale provides a chance for a new generation of kiddies to follow the adventures (or misadventures, perhaps) of the teddy named after the train station where he was discovered. A sure-fire winner with young ’uns or perhaps just a nostalgic journey for older viewers.
Friday
Tuesday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (1975) Seamlessly transferring Peter Benchley’s pulp novel to the big screen, Steven Spielberg redefined the scale of the blockbuster. Cinema history aside, despite the hype surrounding the robotic shark used in filming, the simple human fear of the unseen remains Jaws’ greatest strength, and it cleared the beaches in 1975. The dynamic trio of Roy Scheider (pictured), Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss shine as they go on the hunt for the massive shark, while John Williams’ memorable score remains chilling.
The Shawshank Redemption
Sunday, PRIME7, 8.30pm, M (1994) A modern-day masterpiece, directed by Frank Darabont and based on a short story by Stephen King, in which the amazing Tim Robbins (pictured) plays a banker wrongfully imprisoned for murder who works with a lifer (Morgan Freeman) to bring undone their exploitative warden. A universal appeal and a cliché-avoiding conclusion set this tale of the human spirit head and shoulders above most prison sagas.

FAMILY LAW PROBLEM? Want freedom from ongoing conflict?
NW0849-V3
Consider Collaborative Law
48
Mel Zambelis and Christine Iwaszkiewicz
If your matter is suitable we contract with you and your ‘ex’ and their solicitor not to go to Court. Instead we engage in a process which involves a series of meetings. The meetings are aimed at achieving a negotiated outcome based on your needs. Your needs take priority. We are committed to helping you to achieve an out of Court settlement without conflict, being a transition to a new phase of your life. We offer fixed price to resolution at a fraction of the average cost to litigate a contentious matter.
149A Adelaide Street Raymond Terrace | Ph: 4987 3844
Christine says “ in my experience handling hundreds of Family Law matters, a Collaborative approach causes the least trauma for people and has achieved the most happy outcomes. But it is not a ‘one size fits all’. At CMI Law Firm we adopt the best model for your situation whether that be Collaborative Law, mediation, negotiation or litigation. The alternatives are discussed at your initial consultation which costs only $82.50 upon mentioning this ad”.

Ideally, Jennifer should keep money and chums as far apart as possible because they are a recipe for disaster. It is very important that she doesn’t bottle up her emotions and create greater frustrations for herself than necessary. The better alternative would be to use the energy from the planets to further improve her health. The coming year will also be an ideal time for Jennifer to embark on a new stage in her relationship with her husband.
ARIES: MAR 21 - APR 20
CANCER: JUN 22 - JUL 22
LIBRA: SEP 24 - OCT 23
CAPRICORN: DEC 22 - JAN 20
Your powers of concentration are spot on so it’s a good time to fill in complex forms or statements. Mars in Scorpio indicates that if you have something to say, you’re not going to hold back. However, you need to do your best to avoid being a bully.
Join an organisation or group that caters for one of your interests so you already have something in common with the people you’ll meet there. Then wait to see what happens next. Mars in Scorpio indicates a need to take a philosophical attitude towards someone who is withdrawn or remote.
You’ll be putting a lot of energy into intimate relationships. You might want to spend more time than usual with your partner or a close friend simply because their company delights you. Take time to think about what these relationships give you and what you bring to them.
With Saturn in Capricorn you’ll wish to be productive at work and eager to create a convivial and pleasant atmosphere. You might even want to make amends for past issues. If you’re waiting for love to come along, you might not have to wait much longer. Perhaps you’ve already met them.
LEO: JUL 23 - AUG 23 This is the ideal time to present your ideas to your boss. You’re riding high at the moment and could hit upon some red hot ideas. Mars in Scorpio indicates your social life is about to go into overdrive. Mystical, spiritual or philosophical subjects will attract you.
Mercury in Sagittarius indicates it’s time to get to grips with your official finances and shared resources, especially if you know they urgently need your attention. Take a sober and sensible view and err on the side of caution rather than take risks or hope for the best.
GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUN 21
VIRGO: AUG 24 - SEP 23
SAGITTARIUS: NOV 23 - DEC 21
Mars in Scorpio is the ideal time for livening things up. If you’ve been rather predictable lately or stuck in a rut, think about how you can get things moving once again. Be open to other people’s suggestions and don’t be shy about doing something for the first time.
This is the perfect time to depart from tradition and branch out in new directions. In so doing you’ll attract unconventional and interesting people. Mars in Scorpio indicates your thoughts are on your career and ambitions and creating a strategy to forge ahead. It’ll pay to think laterally.
You're feeling all fired up with enthusiasm about the changes you’re considering making to your job or health. If you haven’t already done so, start putting plans into action while you’re so eager. Mars is in your second house and communication is definitely the key to success.
Your reluctance to say what you think disappears and is replaced with a much more spontaneous and confident persona. Mercury Retrograde could leave you feeling frustrated, but you don’t have to stay that way. Seize the chance to do something energetic, such as working off your frustrations in the gym.
SCORPIO: OCT 24 - NOV 22
AQUARIUS: JAN 21 - FEB 19 Mars is in Scorpio and social events see you shine, especially if you’re with some of your favourite people. You’ll want everyone to have a good time and will do your best to make it happen. If you’re hosting a gathering, you’ll pull out all stops to ensure it’s memorable.
PISCES: FEB 20 - MAR 20 It’s a perfect time for getting together with friends and loved ones. If you’re going to a party, you’ll do your best to be a brilliant conversationalist and to create laughter. If things have been dicey with someone you see regularly, try to sort out the situation.

‘ME’ TIME We all spend a lot of time doing things for other people, whether at work or home. It’s important to me to make a point of taking time to do things just for myself to rejuvenate, even if it’s just a short walk around the garden to enjoy the flowers.
My favourite things THE SMALL THINGS I’m an amateur photographer and get a particular thrill out of seeing the little things in life differently through macro photography. It’s amazing to see an insect’s face in detail, or the tiny hairs on a plant, and the change in viewpoint brings a different perspective on the world.
VARIETY – THE SPICE OF LIFE
Anna Dowley
COMMUNITY INNOVATION MANAGER AT THE CANOPY
Anna Dowley is the community innovation manager at The Canopy, a not-for-profit organisation that provides community development, family support services and facilities management across the western growth area of Lake Macquarie and Newcastle. Anna is responsible for inspiring and enabling communities and community groups in these areas, with the aim of facilitating innovative solutions that allow communities to reach their aspirations. Anna has worked in community development in the Lake Macquarie, Newcastle and Central Coast regions and thrives on the variety of the work and the positive changes that can come from community projects. Her passion lies in running events that meet community needs, and she is most proud of the success of the Cameron Park Twilight Festival, which she coordinates annually in partnership with other organisations and community members. Although Anna grew up in Armidale, she has been a Hunter resident since 2002 and considers the area home. 58
Within my role, I get to work with a broad cross-section of the community, from individuals to community groups, other organisations and government bodies. No two days are the same, which can be challenging as you never know what’s ahead, but it also means that every day brings surprises.
SUSTAINABLE GARDENING I love spending time in the garden and have used all of the available space on my suburban block for both decorative and practical areas, which include native plants, chooks, fruit trees, herbs and vegetables. Even as an adult it’s exciting to collect eggs from your own hens.
ADVENTURES Our country has incredible varied landscapes and the country’s national parks are a great way to explore and get a taste of both the country’s beauty and heritage. Road trips bring an appreciation of just how vast Australia is and just how much more there is to explore.
