FATHER’S DAY TAKES ON NEW MEANING

Catherine Hill Bay SLSC

Catherine Hill Bay Surf Life Saving Club is a small, community-based non-profit organisation manned by volunteers that provide surf patrol and support services during weekends and public holidays from September through to the end of April each year at Catherine Hill Bay, with an extended rescue response north and south of the bay. The club also operates an organised youth program during the swim season for children aged five to 14 years to educate, train, and equip with the skills for surf and aquatic sports environment. This program is called Nippers. Junior and senior members also participate at surf and IRB boat carnivals with the other Hunter area clubs, and at state competition. The Nippers program is an excellent way for children to develop skills, confidence, and personalities while also helping to create the surf lifesavers of the future. Our operation is reliant on funding from Hunter, state, and national bodies; business sponsors; community-based organisations; and grant funding through local council, with purpose-specific state and federal grants to provide the funding for its operations and equipment. Operating in a harsh environment, the equipment has very little lifespan and renewal is always a challenge on a tight fiscal operation, so we are very grateful for the financial support.

Home-Start Family Services

Home-Start believes that every child deserves the best start in life, at home. But when parents are struggling, their children struggle too. When a parent has a physical or mental illness, a disability, multiple babies and children, and no family or friends around to help, their children’s development can be negatively affected. Home-Start currently has a waiting list of families in Lake Macquarie, and a growing list of willing volunteers just waiting for training. This ClubGRANTS funding will help Home-Start train a new group of volunteers to reach out to families in Lake Macquarie. Home-Start is a Volunteer Home Visiting service in which trained and supervised volunteers offer weekly support, practical help and friendship to families with at least one child under five. Home-Start volunteers are a lifeline for many families, providing an extra pair of hands and eyes for stressed parents. They bring their own experience as parents, and undergo a free preparation training course with Home-Start. They are then ‘matched’ with a family and visit weekly in the family’s own home. Their role is varied and tailored to suit the needs of each family. They can provide invaluable practical help with caring for babies and children, shopping, cooking, reading with children, and transport to health or other appointments. They can share parenting information and ideas, be a trusted listener and help families connect with their community. Parents can call Home-Start themselves, or be referred by another service. HomeStart is always happy to hear from people who have a few hours a week to spare to visit a family in need. Phone: 4952 9488 or visit homestartaustralia.org

The Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that provides grassroots support to women and men being treated for breast cancer, and their families, within the Hunter Region. Our Supportive Care Program provides patients with transportation to and from treatment, postoperative comfort cushions, professional lawn maintenance and house cleaning services. The foundation also supports the education of young people who have a parent with breast cancer, as well as funding scholarships. We have also donated medical equipment to a number of Hunter hospitals, and assist with the purchase of prosthesis for patients. Recently, the foundation also introduced a Survivorship Program in the Hunter, helping patients access the highest standard supportive therapy. The programs include Meditation & Mindfulness, EQUIP’d for Empowerment, and Revive (fitness program).

UCA Lifeline Newcastle & Hunter

Hospital Art Australia

Hospital Art commenced 18 years ago and is run entirely by volunteers. Our aim is to continue to provide art as therapy to hospitals and nursing homes across NSW, including the Lake Macquarie/Newcastle area, at no cost to the patients. Our volunteers create the design, pre-draw and colour code the canvases, and send to the hospitals and nursing homes along with the paints required to complete the artwork. Diversional therapists engage their residents through art classes, painting bright colourful images that are later displayed on the walls for the patients and residents to enjoy. While engaged in their painting, patients are focusing on the artwork, the colour and the subject of their painting, rather than any pain or discomfort they may be experiencing. Painting beach scenes, birds, flowers and other “happy” subjects often stimulates conversation and happy memories, making their day more interesting and fulfilling. Hospital Art has supplied more than 20,000 canvases, which patients have turned into colourful art, giving satisfaction to our creative volunteers, the diversional therapists, hospital patients and nursing home residents. These colourful artworks have brightened the walls of many facilities, enhancing the environment for the patients, resident, staff and families.

Lifeline Hunter Central Coast aims to save local lives and assist people in crisis. Lake Macquarie, like the rest of Australia, has a suicide emergency. Twice as many people are lost to suicide as those who die on our roads each year. Lifeline offers face-to-face counselling as one of its key services from its Islington office, and, thanks to the Lake Macquarie ClubGRANTS, Lifeline will be able to reopen its outreach centre in Lake Macquarie, helping to make this low-cost service more accessible to local residents. Lifeline regional manager, Rob Sams, says that Lifeline’s service provides professional, low-cost counselling on all manner of personal and relationship issues. He says many people can’t afford a private psychologist or to wait for a public system appointment. Counselling is one of many services Lifeline provides locally. Its 13 11 14 crisis phone line, community support programs and training for health professionals and community members offer hope and support to those in crisis as well as their families and those bereaved by suicide. They need more support to keep all these services running. Lifeline invites the community to “Walk With Us” on 8 September for World Suicide Prevention Day. Register through the website. Clown Doctors

Imagine being a sick kid in hospital, in need of a friend to play, laugh and smile with. That’s the magic of Clown Doctors! Local professional performers Dr Nose Best and Dr Nose Nothing treat vulnerable sick and seriously ill children, and their families at John Hunter Children’s Hospital, with a special kind of medicine: doses of fun and laughter. It’s a well-known fact that laughter helps improve health and wellbeing, and the funding received from the Lake Macquarie City ClubGRANTS scheme will ensure that this wonderful weekly humour therapy program can continue to positively transform the hospital environment, with Clown Doctors performers bringing much needed joy, laughter and relief to those who need it most. To find out more about Clown Doctors, visit humourfoundation.org.au

TAD

The TAD (Technical Aid to the Disabled) Hunter Volunteer Group designs and makes equipment, and modifies existing equipment, to enable people with disabilities and seniors to live more independently. We have provided this service for 35 years across the Hunter Region. The funding received from ClubGRANTS will support our Freedom Wheels modified bike program. Special assessment clinics are held where children with disabilities are seen by our occupational therapist to decide what levels of support are required to enable the children to ride a bike.

Westlakes NAIDOC Family Fun Day

Hunter Life Education Hunter Life Education is a community-based, independent organisation working in partnership with schools, community partners and the Hunter business community to raise funds to ensure Life Education programs are delivered to children our area. Every year we deliver the Life Education message to more than 27,000 children in Newcastle and the Hunter Region, with local funds raised staying in our community. Hunter Life Education’s goal is to ensure that every student in the Hunter Region has access to annual Life Education programs during their school years, to empower them to make healthier and safer life choices as they transition their way through childhood, adolescence and on to adulthood.

Swansea Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels was originally started in England in 1938 by a Women’s Voluntary Service. This is a continuation from supplying workers with meals during the Second World War. Swansea Meals on Wheels began in 1974 and was run by a committee of five, headed by Mrs Bernice Graham. It is now run by a local committee elected annually. Swansea Meals on Wheels has been operating in Swansea for 43 years, providing the community with home-delivered, hot, chilled or frozen meals. Delivery of nutritious meals, social interaction and a friendly check of a client’s wellbeing by Meals on Wheels volunteers can help people live the lives they choose. We have now opened our doors to the public, to provide frozen meals to those who like the convenience of choosing their own meals. This has been a great success.

NAIDOC celebrations at Toronto Foreshore attract around 3,000 people each year. It is an annual event that is getting bigger every year. It attracts people from all over NSW who travel to the event especially to celebrate with family and friends. NAIDOC stands for the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920s, which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians. NAIDOC is a national celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Indigenous Australians in various fields. The day involves both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people coming together to promote understanding and pride, educate youth, and celebrate the diversity of the Australian culture.

In 1998 the NSW government created a scheme (now known as ClubGRANTS) that diverted gaming machine revenue back to local communities. The ClubGRANTS scheme covers activities that are aimed at improving the living standards of low-income and disadvantaged people. Although the scheme is a requirement of regulations that govern club licenses, each year participating clubs voluntarily exceed the minimum requirements of the scheme.

Newcastle Weekly contents

thursday 24 august 2017

This week... From the editor If I had a dollar for every time somebody asked me if I was Dean Osland's daughter, I'd own a house by now. No, seriously. A former press photographer of almost three decades, my dad is well known among media circles. He did most of his networking the old-fashioned way; not through LinkedIn, or Twitter, but by rubbing shoulders with real people in real time. He's always keen to talk shop with me, and who better to show me the ropes on the media industry. Perhaps one day people will ask him if he's related to Georgia Osland – not the other way around. My dad and I have shared many fond memories over the years – many of them made among the great outdoors – but the bond we've formed during my young adulthood is fast becoming my favourite. Father's Day means different things to different people. Some are not as fortunate as I, and spend the day remembering the fathers and grandfathers they've loved and lost. Others, like the Herrett family, are lucky enough to be thrown a lifeline; a second chance, to celebrate more Father's Days in years to come. Join us on page 28, as Gary and Alison, our shining cover stars this week, tell their story in this, our bumper Father's Day edition.

Cinema captures community spirit

I

t’s no small miracle that Birmingham Gardens’ crown jewel – the Regal Cinema – is still standing today. From the day it closed in 2007, after more than 50 years in operation as a cinema, to the long-awaited day it reopened in 2014, a lot happened behind the scenes to get the venue

back up and running. A group of about 1600 volunteers, known as Friends of the Regal, worked tirelessly on a community campaign to save the cinema from its almost certain demise. Having served its purpose, the group disbanded in 2015, but some volunteers still remain.

These days, they don’t go by a name, but each volunteer makes an essential contribution to the cinema’s operation. Some you’ll see in the kitchen, preparing complimentary drinks and treats for cinemagoers; others, are neither seen nor heard, with only a tidy, weed-free backyard to denote their presence. It’s clear, then, why Regal Cinema volunteers – 77 of them, to be exact – scooped the field at the 2017 Newcastle Volunteer Service Awards. And they’ve earned it. “Volunteers contribute to the Regal in their own unique way, and it gives the Regal the heart that allows it to be enjoyed by so many members of the Newcastle community today,” cinema manager Jo Smith said. It was Newcastle council that initially closed the cinema due to safety concerns, earmarking it for demolition. Its fate seemed all but

Sandgate Cemetery Community Focus Group

sealed. Then, Friends of the Regal assembled, acting as a mouthpiece for those among the community who were disgruntled by the decision. The council listened, gifting the building and the land to the Regal Cinema Trust, on the condition that it reopen as a cinema. Council staff helped develop a strategy for the iconic theatre, and, with the help of a $140,000 state government grant, secured by Wallsend MP Sonia Hornery, the cinema was not only saved, but refurbished with digital capabilities. Today, it’s thriving. Roughly seven or eight hundred patrons walk through the cinema’s doors each week. It’s not your average theatre – it’s more of a “community hub”, as Ms Smith puts it – with high teas, live music and other happenings. And it’s all thanks to volunteers. - Georgia Osland

The Matildas’ all-time leading goalscorer, Lisa De Vanna, at Bar Beach ahead of her side’s clash with Brazil in Newcastle.

Australia’s record goalscorer admits she still gets emotional when the Matildas run out in front of increasingly packed stadiums. Lisa De Vanna has watched the women’s game grow around the world since making her international debut back in 2004. The 32-year-old puts Australia’s drastic improvement during that time down to professionalism and coaching. And, after helping the Matildas win their first trophy in seven years with a 6-1 thumping of Brazil earlier this month, De Vanna is eager to maintain the momentum. “It’s something that I’ve always dreamed of – to have this kind of support,” she says. “When I started, we only had about 200 people coming to see us, and now we’re at the point where the stadiums are nearly sold out. “I’ve been around for a while and, after getting the goal record and winning the Tournament of Nations, I’m still here. “So, for me, it’s very emotional.” The Matildas will now line up against

their Brazilian rivals in a two-game international series. The second clash is set to be played at McDonald Jones Stadium on Tuesday 19 September. It will mark the women’s national side’s first match in the region for almost two decades. Speaking to Newcastle Weekly at Bar Beach ahead of the clash, Australia’s cocaptain says she can’t wait to tackle a side of such calibre. “I’m really excited because it’s just a great place to have a Matildas game against a top team like Brazil,” De Vanna says. “It’s very community-based here [in Newcastle], and we want it to be a bit more intimate when it comes to football games because it’s such a familyfriendly environment.” The clash kicks off at 7.30pm. Callaghan College Wallsend student Connor Terry. Photo: Peter Stoop

Olympics delivers powerful message Connor Terry thought there had to be a better way to promote mental health among youth. The Callaghan College Wallsend student wanted to present the important message to his Year 9 cohort without pushing too much information on them. So, he came up with the idea of hosting the Mental Health Olympics.

It encourages students to compete in a variety of activities, which focus on the good things about mental health, such as problem solving, exercise, music, dance, and art. A trial program took place at the college last week. Connor said the event was simply a fun way for young people to support each other.

“I wanted to further educate my peers around the seriousness of mental health in youth and I also wanted kids who may have mental health [issues] to know that it’s okay to talk about it,” he said. Due to the size of the Year 9 group, there needed to be more organisations involved in order to realise the project. Ability Links (St Vincent de Paul Society) – an early adopter of the Olympics – encouraged others to get behind Connor’s idea. They have since been joined by headspace Newcastle, The Samaritans Foundation, UP&UP, STARTTS, Family Planning, and a number of individuals including the likes of Mark Picton from Mind Passages. headspace Newcastle’s community development officer, Byron Williams, said Connor’s project was vital in the bid to promote mental health awareness.

“When Connor came to headspace Newcastle, I was impressed with his vision and passion regarding the project,” Mr Williams said. “Having a young person lead the way for other young people is powerful. “The message is not coming down from adults or authority, it’s coming up from the youth, and that’s what breaks down barriers.” During the trial, one of the organisations, UP&UP, joined forces with the students to create a mural, which symbolised diversity. The mural was funded by a generous donation from the Newcastle Youth Council. Following the trial’s success, a number of other Newcastle schools have expressed interest in hosting Mental Health Olympics – all stemming from the passion of a Year 9 student. - Ben Murphy

New recruits take post; resources still fall short Three of the Hunter’s Local Area Commands have welcomed five new probationary constables this week. Two constables from the 226-strong graduating Class 331 were each assigned to Lake Macquarie and Port Stephens LACs, with a fifth stationed at Central Hunter LAC. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, congratulated the new recruits. “Policing can be an extremely challenging profession,” Mr MacDonald said. “Our officers encounter the best and the worst of humanity in the line of duty, so I’m very pleased that our community will benefit from the enthusiasm of five new officers starting their career on the beat.” However, Wallsend MP Sonia

Hornery said not enough new recruits were assigned to the region, highlighting that Newcastle Local Area Command missed out altogether. She called upon the police minister to review the allocation. “Wallsend residents have been crying out for more police resources for years and, again, those cries have been ignored,” she said. “Police resources are stretched to the limit and officers are doing as much as they can, but more local police are needed on the ground. “My office has received a spike in complaints from people fearing for their safety and security.’’ The Northern Region, which stretches from the Hawkesbury River to the Queensland border, received 16 new recruits.

Claydon urges plebiscite participation Newcastle federal MP Sharon Claydon is flying the rainbow flag for marriage equality. A colourful window display in her office serves as a visual reminder for residents to update their details on the electoral roll before it closes at midnight tonight (Thursday 24 August). Ms Claydon urged Novocastrians who support marriage equality to participate in the government’s postal plebiscite on same-sex marriage. “I’m calling on all marriage equality supporters in my community, both young and old, to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our LGBTI citizens, and support the ‘yes’ vote,” she said.

The window display in Sharon Claydon’s office on Hunter Street, Newcastle.

“If you aren’t registered, if you don’t know whether you are, or if you’ve moved house since the last election, please visit the Australian Electoral Commission website to update your details or register to vote.” Ms Claydon said she understood the temptation to boycott the survey, but urged people not to. Charity tees up final fundraiser He has pushed his body to the limit over the past five years, but it’s been worth the effort. Norm Henderson first established Change A Heart to help purchase heart and respiratory equipment for children in local hospitals. So far, the charity has raised more than $25,000, with some of the funds coming from Norm’s long-distance cycles or walks. Earlier this year, he notched up another 500 kilometres on the road in just 10 days. And, apart from Mr Henderson’s gruelling journeys, a number of charity golf days have also boosted the fundraising total. But, sadly, all good things must come to an end, and the upcoming event at Charlestown Golf Club will be the final one of its kind. “I need to move on to new things; it’s time for a change,” Mr

Henderson says. “It’s always been a small group of volunteers, and I can’t thank the likes of Fran Howell enough – she put her hand up to help as soon as I mentioned it back in 2012.” After battling with his own personal health problems, Mr Henderson hopes the fundraiser can push the final figure beyond the $30,000 mark. “Kids that can’t breathe or their hearts don’t work properly – I can’t think of too much that’s worse than that,” he says. “My own issues scared me greatly, so it concerns me to think that young children suffer from far more serious heart and asthma conditions.” Registrations for the charity golf day on Friday 8 September will open at 7am, with an Ambrose event starting an hour later.

The cost is $90 per person, which includes golf, a cart, breakfast and lunch. There will also be raffles with some great prizes up for grabs. For more information, or to

Heroic rescue officially rewarded Amid the chaos of the April 2015 Superstorm, Marine Rescue Port Stephens embarked on a dangerous mission that would later earn the unit a coveted national award. The operation, dubbed ‘Reef Dragon’, saw the crew respond to reports of a catamaran washed onto the rocks in Fame Cove. “Even though the boat was inside the bay, the weather was horrendous,” Port Stephens unit commander Lee Uebergang said. “There were five to six-metre waves and visibility was just about next to nothing. “Our crew showed exemplary seamanship to control the vessel in those conditions. “They then deployed a 2.5-metre inflatable dinghy that went across to the catamaran, called Reef Dragon, successfully got two crew members off the boat, and brought them back

to the safety of the rescue vessel.” The eleven members involved in the operation were officially recognised at a special ceremony last week. Their role saw Port Stephens win the Unit Citation for Courage and Service, as well as the 2015 Australian Search and Rescue award. Apart from that crew, a number of other volunteers were also acknowledged on the night. Among them was Michael Brown, who received the Commissioner’s Citation for the part he played in the ‘Excalibur’ rescue operation in 2002. Three other members of the unit – Ross Debenham, Ronald Lighton and Paul Farnill – picked up the National Medal for 15 years of long and diligent service. - Ben Murphy

It’s a celebration of the community’s artistic talents. A benefit concert and creativity showcase next month will feature live musical performances, raise the profile of quiet achievers, and support an award-winning local charity. Centre for Hope, a not-for-profit organisation based at Windale, looks to empower disadvantaged youth. Founder Geraldine Moran says the upcoming event will offer a voice to people from all walks of life. “This isn’t just about Centre for Hope – it’s also about the community, where people are doing wonderful things that others might not be aware of,” she says. The action-packed program is the brainchild of producer Michael Riddell and internationally-

acclaimed choreographer Bron White. Among the performers at Adamstown Uniting Church will be the One Voice Mob choir from Windale village, plus the Spirit of Movement Aboriginal Cherubs. And, in harmony with Adamstown Arts, the creativity showcase will be set up in the adjoining hall. The event will take place on Saturday 2 September from 2pm to 5pm. The Hunter Region’s premier spring festival is on the move after 56 years. This year, the Mattara Festival, which is usually held at Newcastle’s Foreshore Park, will relocate to its new home at Wallsend Park. Festival organisers believe Wallsend offers a larger footprint to accommodate a full program of entertainment and exhibits. Wallsend Town Coordinator, Rhonda Campbell, said it was a logical move. The festival, which draws its name from the Indigenous ‘hand of friendship’, remains one of the region’s most significant celebrations of local culture. The 2017 iteration will be held from 30 September to 8 October. For more information, visit mattarafestival.org.au

The precious gift of time

Alison Herrett-Clark with her father, Gary Herrett, at Lambton Park. Photo: Peter Stoop

In 2006, the Herrett family was given the ultimate Father’s Day present: the gift of celebrating more in years to come. That was the year Gary had life-saving surgery, 18 months after he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Each year, Father’s Day is a chance for Gary, Linda, and their three daughters to reflect on their journey and count themselves among the lucky ones. “This Father’s Day, like many other families, I will spent the day with my husband and children, as well as my own father, simply to recognise the heroic person and grandfather he is to me and my family,” Gary’s youngest daughter, Alison, told Newcastle Weekly. “I am thankful he is still here, and that I can share many more moments with him, as he can with me.” Following his initial surgery to remove the cancerous gland, Gary underwent another two procedures within 12 months. He has now been in remission for several years. But the Mount Hutton resident wasn’t going to let cancer – specifically, male cancers that are less

talked about than female cancers – off the hook that easily. Gary joined the Maryland-based Hunter Prostate Cancer Support Group shortly after his initial surgery to seek friendship and support. He became concerned by a lack of public awareness of prostate cancer, and so, in 2008, he became an accredited Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia ambassador. Over the years, he has spoken to hundreds of people at local and regional forums. He is still actively involved in the Hunter Prostate Cancer Support Group, which meets on the second Tuesday of the month at Maryland Community Centre. “Many men put their heads in the sand; they are less proactive than women and less likely to do something about [cancer],” Gary said. “But, this way, we can help others, together.” For more information on the Hunter Prostate Cancer Support Group, phone Terry Wheeler on 0420 359 647 or email hunterprostatehelp@gmail.com - Georgia Osland

LOCAL CLUBS THROW LIFELINE TO COMMUNITY

Helping children chase their dreams An annual scholarship program is helping Australian children overcome barriers and chase their dreams. Variety – the Children’s Charity provides scholarships to young people aged six to 18 in both NSW and the ACT. A maximum of $5,000 per child is available each year through the program to cover training costs, equipment and skills-based courses. Maitland’s Maddison Elliott OAM, the youngest Australian to win a Paralympic Gold Medal, is just one of many to have benefited from the initiative. Born with cerebral palsy, Maddie has achieved her sporting dreams with the support of her family and Variety. “Variety changed my life by giving me scholarships to support my training and competition costs,”

Belmont 16s CEO Scott Williams and Lifeline regional manager Rob Sams.

Four local clubs are helping us to save local lives and assist people in crisis. We’re very grateful for the Club Grants we have just received to help reintroduce face to face counselling for people in Belmont as well as to help continue our much used 13 11 14 telephone crisis line across the Hunter. A big thank you to these clubs, their members & guests. • Wests Group • Belmont 16s • Wallsend Diggers • Hexham Bowling Club We had to discontinue our professional, low cost, counselling for personal and relationship issues in areas like Belmont because of a lack of funding. The Clubs’ funding will help people who can’t afford a private psychologist or to wait for a public system appointment. We need more funding & support to keep all our life-saving services running. Our region has a suicide emergency. Many more people are in crisis or at risk. To help, visit www.lifelinehunter.org.au

Storm roll in, blow past plucky Knights The Melbourne Storm juggernaut swept through Newcastle at the weekend, with another emphatic victory securing the NRL minor premiership. Newcastle, riding a three-match winning streak, quickly grabbed the lead, but Melbourne hit back through tries to Curtis Scott, Dale Finucane and Brodie Croft. Trailing 16-6 at half-time, it didn’t get any better for the Knights as an inspired Croft – who replaced champion half-

back Cooper Cronk – picked up two more tries to claim his hat-trick with 15 minutes still to go. And, there was more carnage to come, with Storm winger Suliasi Vunivalu diving over in the 69th minute. Nelson Asofa-Solomon’s try on the full-time siren then rounded out the resounding 44-12 triumph. The Knights now head to Canberra to tackle the Raiders on Friday 25 August, before their final match against Cronulla.

Three sisters from Lake Macquarie have represented NSW at the Australian Karate Federation National Championships in Sydney. Anna, Mika and Kaia Hayes joined about 130 other members on the state team. Anna, Mika and Kaia Hayes at Charlton Christian College. The trio train up to three hours a day, five days a week at the Hunter Valley Martial Arts Centre in Warners Bay. That hard work and dedication has seen them reach high levels, with Anna achieving a Nidan Black Belt (2nd dan), Mika a Shodan Black Belt (1st dan) and Kaia a Junior Shodan Black Belt (1st dan). When they aren’t training, the girls teach students, aged between six and nine, at the centre. Many of the children are shy, angry, have low self-esteem, ADHD, or autism. Even after just a short period, the girls notice a significant difference in their students, with many gaining confidence that helps them overcome challenges. The sisters’ have attended Charlton Christian College for the past eight years.

Sephardim advertising moment

Restauranteurs Danny and Emma Clark will take your tastebuds on a journey from Spain, to Morocco to the Middle East – all without leaving Warners Bay. The couple own Sephardim, one of the seaside suburb’s hidden gems. “Because we’re not right on the foreshore, a lot of people are still surprised when they find us,” Emma says. The couple opened the restaurant just over two years ago. Danny had been working as Bocados’ head chef for several years, when the opportunity presented itself for him to open his own kitchen with his own flavour. They started out serving primarily Spanish cuisine, but Sephardim’s menu quickly evolved to offer a more culturally-rounded experience, including Mediterranean and Middle Eastern dishes. Sephardim gets its name from the Sephardi, who hugely influenced the food of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean and into the Middle East. It is these regions the restaurant explores. So, it was the perfect name for Danny and Emma’s restaurant, which they describe as a 36

casual yet sophisticated mezze bar and grill. With six children – two of whom were born after they opened the restaurant – Danny and Emma have certainly had a lot on their plate. “It’s been a hurricane of an experience,” Danny says. “But we really wanted to cement a different kind of cuisine and dining experience – something that didn’t really exist in the area. “We work very hard to maintain that kind of authenticity, and we keep these flavours close to our chest.” Sephardim offers a dish and an atmosphere to suit everybody – couples, groups and families. Banquets are the most popular choice among parties of two or more, because it gives patrons the chance to sample a wide variety of mouthwatering mezze morsels. The restaurant caters to intimate dining during the week and is lively and vibrant on weekends. Sephardim is open for dinner from 5.30pm ‘til late, Tuesday to Saturday, and lunch from 11.30am to 3pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Check out the restaurant’s Facebook (‘Sephardim’) and Instagram (@sephardimwarnersbay) pages.

“The process of doing a surfing road trip is disappearing, and so are the people doing it. “I think it’s a bit more premeditated these days – it’s still an adventure, but it’s just different. “So, we realised that if we don’t get something done now, it’ll never happen.” The book features about 60 stories that describe the search for the best waves, the offshores and disasters, the friendly surfer girls, police harassment, fights with the locals, the clubbies, and fires in the bush. It also comes with a foreword written by four-time world champion Mark Richards. And, while their first joint foray

It was a time when you’d fill up a jerrycan, jump in a car that might not get you anywhere and head out into the blue yonder in search of waves. Those days are long since gone, but the memories remain. And, many of these spontaneous trips have now been brought to life in a book compiled by Newcastle trio John Waring, Chris Tola and Brian Birkefeld. Surfing Roadies fondly recalls the era, from the 1950s onwards, where surfers’ around the world would, if only for a short while, break away from civilisation. “It’s about the people you were with, the vehicles you drove, and the places you went to,” Tola says.

Buddhist nun breaks the mould Robina Courtin does not fit the mould of what most people expect from a nun. She’s outspoken, fiery, passionate, warm, funny, and speaks with rapid-fire clarity and precision. Over the past 30 years, the Melbourne-born Buddhist nun and social activist has traversed the globe on her search for deeper meaning in life, giving talks and sharing insight. Born in 1944, Robina lived in London during her young adulthood, and was ordained in 1978. Her life and work have been documented in two films: Christine Lundberg’s On the Road Home (1998) and Amiel Courtin-Wilson’s Chasing Buddha (2000), and in Vicki Mackenzie’s book, Why Buddhism? (2003). As a passionate women’s rights

activist and as someone who keeps abreast of modern, global culture, Robina draws on her own experiences to shed light on the human condition. And, as part of her Australian tour, Robina will be giving a public talk at 28 Watt Street in Newcastle on Friday 1 September. She’s teaching others to ‘Harness the Craziness’: how to face negativity with a positive mind. Whether it’s traffic jams, strained relationships at home, highly demanding jobs, or the overall state of global affairs, there are a lot of external influences we allow to affect our personal spheres. So, how do we shed our habitual anxiety, stress, blame, guilt and depression? How do we, instead, cultivate bravery in the face of our problems? Robina hopes to equip you with the tools to find the answers.

Robina Courtin will give a public talk in Newcastle on Friday 1 September.

During her time in Australia, Robina is also set to appear on the ABC’s Q&A, along with the Richard Fidler program. The Newcastle public talk will be held from 6.30pm to 9pm. Tickets cost $59. Visit bodhievents.org

time out Real stories, real women Being adventurous doesn’t always have to mean being the fastest, going the furthest, or doing the most extreme things. Adventure, for most of us, is stepping outside of our comfort zone and climbing our personal Everest. This is the message the Women’s Adventure Film Tour hopes to instil in audiences around the country. Presented by Mountainfilm on Tour: Australia & New Zealand, in conjunction with She Went Wild, the film tour follows a sell-out launch in Sydney in May. It features some of the world’s most inspiring women in adventure, and is a celebration of the fantastic women around us who are doing extraordinary things. The films – the cream of the crop from the Mountainfilm Festival in

Colorado, USA – can be enjoyed by both women and men of all ages. They show real stories about real women from a variety of cultures and sports around the world, who have achieved their adventurous goals. The tour has officially partnered with Women’s Health Week (4 to 8 September), with which its pitstop in Newcastle on Wednesday 6 September coincides. Tower Cinemas will host the Newcastle screening from 7pm to 9pm. It’s an extraordinary chance to experience a night of edge-ofyour-seat outdoor adventuring and heartwarming storytelling. You’ll also hear from guest speakers, and there are great prizes up for grabs. Tickets start from $16.67 and are available online at womensadventurefilmtour.com

Victorian Racing Club chairman Amanda Elliott says it’s a chance to meet a racing legend. The Lower Hunter town was selected as a cup tour destination at a special event in May due to its passion for racing and its community spirit.

next freezing and wet. IN THE GARDEN My prime JUDY SHARPE concern at present is the emergence of bud swell on deciduous plants. They may look bare, but the fact is, readers, deciduous plants can feel the earth warming around their root system and will want to grow. A drink a day is absolutely necessary as the sap stream is trying to rise to carry growth to the top of the plant.

• Give houseplants some attention. They may need dust wiped off their leaves, dead fronds removed, topsoil turned over and peat moss added to the surface. • Clivias are beginning to flower. Don’t worry if those in complete shade are a little slow. • Now we’ve had a little rain, it’s a good time to throw around an all-purpose fertiliser to stimulate spring growth.

PICK OF THE WEEK Notes On A Scandal Friday, SBS, 8.35pm, MA15+ (2006) It’s hard to go wrong when you match up actors Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett (both pictured) on opposite sides of a twisted drama about a spinster preying on a woman caught in a scandal. Dench plays Barbara, a bitter teacher who discovers the secret of new colleague Sheba (Blanchett) – that she’s having an affair with a student. Barbara decides that she won’t inform the authorities so long as Sheba ends the relationship.

Friday

Hancock

Happy Feet Two

Sunday, GO!, 8.50pm, M (2008) Will Smith (pictured) stars as Hancock, a superhero who’s fallen out of favour with the citizens of Los Angeles. But Hancock’s image is set for an overhaul after he saves the life of PR executive Ray Embrey (Jason Bateman). As his wife Mary (Charlize Theron) looks on, Ray promises to iron out Hancock’s creases, unaware that Mary is connected to Hancock’s past. Directed by Peter Berg (The Kingdom), Hancock is not quite the blast it could be. Smith is engaging and the action is up to scratch.

Saturday, GO!, 6.30pm, PG (2011) Five years after the original wowed audiences, the sequel finally arrived to delight fans once again. Mumbles (voiced by Elijah Wood) is all grown up and with a furry little kid of his own. Young Erik struggles to find his place in the penguin hierarchy, which isn’t helped by his reluctance to boogie. A message about global warming is sugar-coated by the song-and-dance sequences which have a fun ’80s flavour the older “kids” will appreciate.

STARS STARS WITH FRANCIS BEVAN

Love and friendliness will surround Elizabeth throughout the next 12 months. It’s an excellent time to explore her creative abilities or to beautify her home. Gaining experience from life’s adventures will be of paramount importance. Her personal life will become more secure. Family and friends will become increasingly important and on many occasions she will find herself lending a hand to loved ones who may be going through a difficult time.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

If affairs of the heart aren’t your particular cup of tea, a creative adventure suggested by a friend could provide the fulfilment you require. In life, you will need to feel that what you are doing is worthwhile and has more meaning than simply paying the bills.

You may need to lay plans to ensure maximum profit, but don’t expect swift returns from investments; take a long-term view. Sensible monetary decisions made now will pay off in a big way later. Don’t allow others to take money from you if you don’t feel you should give it.

Your mental powers are sharp and this is a great time for being with other people. Friends, lovers and family will all be happy to share your company and to cheer you up. You will bring them just as much pleasure in return. Communicate clearly to avoid causing offence.

Should you think big or conservatively with a long-term financial or personal direction? Gather information, clarify your priorities, define your goals and you will find the best way forward. This is a positive time to focus on clearing up past mistakes.

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19

If you find yourself dealing with demanding children or adults, the fact that you are still able to empathise with their point of view while maintaining your own position of moral authority will be very important. On the home front, you might decide to redecorate or repaint.

The year ahead sees success on many different fronts and with the Sun in your own sign, you will make excellent progress. It is a good time for starting new projects. If you are looking for a new home then the right place will suddenly appear.

August provides a turning point for your career and aspirations, which is all to the good. The splendid aspect between the Sun and Uranus encourages you to reach for the sky. You will have the will and insight to make the most of any opportunity that comes your way.

A friendship that’s been slow to blossom will grow and a secret wish could manifest. A reunion will touch emotional chords; there will be issues of the past to reconnect with and let go of. There may be a situation where you feel you’re on the outside looking in.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21

Something from your past could come back to cause embarrassment. For example, you may have forgotten to do something or you may have done something in an inefficient manner, simply to save time or to cut corners and this problem now reveals itself in an inconvenient manner.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20

You might be connecting with people far away or making travel plans for later in the year. It’s important that you take time to rest. Try not to wear yourself out by partying or working too hard. On the work front, use diplomacy to solve any professional problems.

A change at work will increase your workload, but will showcase your talents in a dynamic light. A health pursuit will require concerted effort. Labors of love for family and friends might prove demanding, but they’ll open the way to nurture or rebuild important relationships.

The Sun in Leo indicates you will be surrounded by friendly, chatty people. You are particularly persuasive right now so you should be able to win even the most stubborn person over to your cause. You might hear unexpected news about your mother or grandmother.

HOUSING PEOPLE My wonderful team does the hard but satisfying work of putting a roof over someone’s head. A home is so vital to our well-being and people are so grateful for something that should be their right.

My favourite things

EGMONT, CANADA I love to travel and recently got to spend time in the USA and Canada. Egmont is a beautiful little town in the spectacular Canadian wilderness. China and Russia are next on my list.

Greg Budworth

COMPASS HOUSING MANAGING DIRECTOR

What do you get when you cross a youth worker, police officer and a religious minister? Newcastle born and bred man, Greg Budworth, has worked in all three roles, which have proved useful for his current position leading the Hunter-based notfor-profit community housing organisation Compass Housing Services. In his 14 years with the organisation, Greg and his team have helped Compass become one of Australia’s largest social and affordable housing providers. Almost 10,000 people call a Compass house their home. Greg is passionate about ensuring that everyone has the fundamental human right to housing because of its importance to our health, well-being and employment. Compass’ approach is to do more than put a roof over people’s heads. Greg has initiated programs to give tenants skills and opportunities so they can fully participate in their community. That passion has seen Greg elected co-chair of a United Nation’s committee, supporting the sustainable development of cities globally, and seen Compass recently win three housing awards. 82

FAMILY I am blessed to have three children and three grandchildren who are keeping me young at heart. I recently remarried and I feel very fortunate to share my life with my beautiful wife Tracey (pictured at our wedding).

MY FAITH I really value the pursuit of learning, including understanding our place in the universe. My faith in God makes that place clearer for me.

PORT STEPHENS Tracey and I have just moved to the region and are loving it. The change of pace is really good and I am now finally going to take up kayaking.
