Newcastle Weekly contents
thursday 06 July 2017
This week... From the editor Oh, the places I’ve been. In my three weeks’ absence from the editor’s desk, I covered some 32,500 kilometres travelling the USA with my partner, Luke, and my aunt and uncle. We spent time in New York City, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Oh, how I wish I could encapsulate for you, dear readers, the various sights, sounds, smells and even microclimates we encountered, but alas, it is a task too great, even for a journalist like myself. Of one thing, I am certain: travel truly is the only thing you buy that makes you richer. There is one moment in particular, though, that will stick with me. I’ll set the scene for you: we were on a Manhattan-bound train, returning to the city after having spent the afternoon at Coney Island. Before we got on the train, I bought a Sunday New York Times, as thick as anything, from a newsstand no bigger than my bathroom. I sat there on the train, broadsheet spread out, engrossed in its tangible words, while the others played mindlessly on their phones. I was in my own, content bubble – ink all over my fingers and t-shirt. It was a beautiful moment. Kudos are in order to my fantastic team, who put out three stellar editions while I was away. It’s good to be back.

news “This is the future of the university and education, so it’s great to be here at the point where staff are moving in.” NeW Space aims to deliver new academic and research programs in business, law and emerging fields, including creative industries, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The campus will also play a role in connecting the university with business, industry and community partners in Newcastle and the Hunter. “This [NeW Space] is obviously a different environment to the one at Callaghan – it’s urban, compared to the bushland campus,” Mr McGregor adds. “While we’re very proud of our city campus, we also highly value our Callaghan campus.”
The university’s transport planning includes new Callaghan-based park-and-ride facilities, with more than 300 parking bays available; a free, exclusive shuttle bus service running every half hour during semester; and the introduction of a ridesharing app.
An additional 150 parking spaces have also been secured for staff and students in the CBD. The state and federal governments committed a combined $55 million towards NeW Space, while the University of Newcastle invested $40 million. - Ben Murphy

It has visibly transformed the skyline in Newcastle’s CBD over the past few years. Now, the University of Newcastle’s $95 million NeW Space facility is one step closer to its goal of transforming the way students are educated in the future. The urban campus’ doors opened to the first lot of staff this week, while up to 3,000 students are set to study at the site from the start of semester two. The university’s chief operating officer Nat McGregor says NeW Space is an “incredibly important” facility. “It’s one of our signature buildings and we’re very proud of that, and the way we’re engaging with the business community,” he says.

news Brickfest organiser Kevin Evans at Newcastle Racecourse with some of the LEGO creations. Photo: Peter Stoop
LEGO festival showcases array of clever creations If you missed out on the Brickman Experience when it came to Newcastle in April, don’t fret. Everything is awesome at Newcastle Brickfest: A LEGO
Fan Event, with a staggering 55 exhibitors from local LEGO user group Rainbow Bricks showing off their stunning creations. Minecraft and Star Wars have
provided inspiration for LEGO models built by exhibitors. A 14-metre model of the city of Newcastle is the crowning jewel of the exhibition, complete with Kooragang Island and its bucketwheel excavators, and a model of the Pasha Bulker. Builders can test their skill at the inaugural Speed Building event, where competitors have only three minutes to build a model from an assortment of LEGO bricks. Organiser Kevin Evans grew up playing with LEGO. “I loved LEGO as a child,” he said. “But then, kids go through the ‘Dark Ages’, where they think they’ve grown out of playing with LEGO and that sort of stuff.” It wasn’t until his son was given a LEGO kit that Mr Evans rekindled his love for the playtime staple.
“You can build and rebuild with it,” he explained. “There’s so much flexibility. The only limitation is your imagination”. Mr Evans came up with the idea of hosting LEGO events from seeing other LEGO user groups hosting successful fundraising events online. After hosting a similar event at his son’s school and receiving a positive result, he decided to organise a public event and raise money for local schools and charities in the Newcastle area. This is the fourth event Mr Evans and Rainbow Bricks have hosted, with the previous three raising more than $10,000 for charities and local schools. Brickfest is on at Newcastle Racecourse this Sunday 9 July from 9:30am to 5:30pm. Entry is $5. - Alice Hennen

news An artist’s impression of the new playground in Stockton.
Kids’ call to council pays off The children campaigned, and Newcastle City Council delivered. A new playground and picnic area is in the works at Stockton, with the unveiling of concept plans in front of excited students at St Peter’s Primary School, whose tireless campaign for a new play area at Griffith Park has finally come to fruition. Newcastle City Council and the
local community first supported the idea of a playground at Griffith Park in 2012, after adopting the South Stockton Reserves Public Domain Plan. Last year, schoolchildren got busy, penning persuasive letters to the council, constructing models of the park. They then invited council officers to review their ideas for a new play
area, a skate park and picnic area. The concept images for the new park blend together modern play equipment and give a nod to Newcastle’s industrial heritage, with a crane, a skate park featuring sand dunes, docks and scaffolding for youngsters to climb. Other features included in the plan are an accessible spinner, a basket swing, a rock pool water feature, and a social area with a barbecue, picnic area and shelter. Community members are invited to view the plans, and provide feedback, before Friday 4 August. The plans are on public display at Stockton and Newcastle libraries, the City Administration Centre (282 King Street Newcastle), and on Newcastle City Council’s website at newcastle.nsw.gov.au/ YourSay - Alice Hennen
Pedestrians on path to safety Lindesay Street has just become a whole lot safer for pedestrians, with work undertaken to improve road crossings between Cumberland Street and Raymond Terrace Road at East Maitland. A new pedestrian crossing on Pierce Street and traffic islands near Rolleston and Narang streets will encourage pedestrians to cross the road at these locations, and the relocation of a bus stop between Narang Road and George Street is expected to make public transport easier and safer to use. Connecting pathways to the kerb and traffic islands have also made it easier for parents with prams to navigate the footpath. The installation of lighting over the crossing near Pierce Street is scheduled for later this year.

A catwalk for a worthy cause
Some of the youth who will take part in Centre for Hope’s Recycled Runway event. Photo: Peter Stoop
It’s a fashion show with a difference. Recycled Runway will feature second-hand clothes – and all of your favourite brands – at bargain prices. The event aims to raise muchneeded funds for local charity, Centre for Hope. Based in Windale, the notfor-profit organisation supports disadvantaged kids and their families across Newcastle and the Hunter Valley. It provides coaching and mentoring in more than 20 schools, as well as a drop-in centre at Mount Hutton, where youth are given a safe space to play sport, eat healthy food, and talk to people. Founder Geraldine Moran says any donations from the local community will be greatly appreciated. “I’d just like to thank the
volunteers and people supporting the day – it makes a big difference,” she says. “Any event that is organised for Centre for Hope impacts these kids directly, whether that’s through the continuation of our school programs, film and art projects, or NAIDOC Week celebrations. “The money goes directly towards including young people in activities that they may otherwise be excluded from due to a number of reasons like not feeling as though they are good enough, or experiencing troubled times.” Apart from the latest fashion trends, Recycled Runway will also provide personalised advice from a professional stylist. The event will take place at The Grove, 130 Garden Grove Parade Adamstown, on Saturday 15 July from 2pm to 5pm. - Ben Murphy
Council eyes new community centre Maitland City Council is seeking feedback on a proposed multipurpose community centre at Tenambit. The council says new development and population growth in the area has created the need for a new centre. The existing Tenambit Community Hall, located on Tyrell Street, is set to be demolished and replaced. The proposed site is close to a selection of retail outlets and public transport, which the council believes will enhance accessibility and connectivity. The public can provide feedback on the proposal until Friday 28 July. To view the community centre’s proposed location, and offer feedback, visit maitlandyoursay. com.au or follow @maitlandyoursay on Facebook.

Cindy’s goal for beloved club When Cindy Redpath’s husband passed away suddenly, she selflessly took on an even bigger role with South Cardiff Junior Football Club. The long-serving committee member stepped up as president and, for the past two years, she has
fulfilled a long list of duties. Ms Redpath can, on any given Saturday, spend about 12 hours at Ulinga Park in a bid to ensure everything goes smoothly for the club’s 300 juniors and their families. Now, the tireless volunteer and mother-of six’s dedication to South
South Cardiff Junior Football Club president Cindy Redpath.
Master plan adopted for Lake Mac park
Cardiff has been recognised with the Newcastle Permanent Northern NSW Football Community Volunteer of the Month award. Ms Redpath said the award was “humbling”, but added that she simply aimed to bring the club together with the help of others. “I’ve been trying to build a stronger relationship between the juniors and the seniors,” she said. “I just want to make it better for the kids and get more people to come and join our wonderful club. “There are some very good helpers behind the scenes who are part of our committee.’’ Ms Redpath has organised a soccer clinic from 11 to 13 July, 9.30am to 12pm. It is open to both South Cardiff juniors and the wider community. Visit the club’s Facebook page for more details. - Ben Murphy
Development is set to start next year at Thomas H Halton Park, with the adoption of a master plan by Lake Macquarie City Council. The plan came about after the council identified the Croudace Bay park as a major recreational hub for Lake Macquarie residents. After extensive community consultation, the council drew up the plan to effectively integrate some much-needed facilities. Improvements in the plan include a skate park, outdoor fitness equipment, a learner cyclist circuit and a fenced dog area. New amenity blocks, an upgrade to the playground and picnic area and a fence to improve child safety are also in the works. Construction is scheduled to start in 2018. It is expected to be ongoing for three years.

Annette’s eager to help Cambodians
Lambton’s Annette Squires with some of the local residents during her time in Cambodia.
Access to clean running water and toilets are a convenience that we take for granted every day. When Lambton woman Annette Squires visited Cambodia, she saw first-hand the toll that dirty water and inadequate toilets took upon the local community. She was teaching English at a oneroom school in a rural village, 40 minutes outside of Siem Reap. “The rural people are so gracious and gorgeous,” she said. “But there is so much preventable disease. Six months of the year is wet season, which brings flooding. “With animal and human waste floating around, disease quickly breaks out.” A large number of Cambodians do not have a toilet or water filtration system, while about half don’t have access to clean water at all, leading to preventable diseases such as typhoid, diarrhoea and tuberculosis. Children, in particular, are susceptible
to dehydration as a result of diarrhoea, as well as skin disease, respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, and other gastrointestinal diseases which affect child health and, in many cases, result in death. Ms Squires believes that everyone has the right to safe drinking water, so she decided to do something to improve conditions in Cambodia. She is hosting a Christmas in July fundraiser in Newcastle to help build three toilets in Dom Nak Khgas, a small village one-and-a-half hours’ drive from Siem Reap. For $20, you can enjoy a delicious Christmas dinner, live music from local artists, raffles, auctions and much more at Carrington Bowling Club on 29 July, from 5pm to 11:30pm. The theme is red Christmas. Phone Annette on 0431 194 778, or Nelle at biglovegowild@gmail.com for tickets.

Swim school wins award It is a chlorine-free swimming pool that features solar heating, water recycling and energyefficient lighting. The purpose-built FinS Swim School Kotara has been recognised as an industry leader after winning the most ecofriendly centre in Australia. The school, which was designed with a strong focus on ecological sustainability, long-term viability and cost effectiveness, took out the award at the 20th Swim Australia Conference on the Gold Coast. FinS Swim School owner Damon Rodd said the achievement was “massive in the times that we live in”. “Electricity prices have gone up about 20% in the last financial year, and we’ve made this [centre] as sustainable as we can get it at

Dr Stuart MacKenzie advertising moment
Orthopedic surgeon Dr Stuart MacKenzie can help sort out your joint problems for good. Photo (above): Peter Stoop
Get to the bare bones of your joint problems
As the song goes, the foot bone’s connected to the shin bone, and the shin bone’s connected to the thigh bone. hat’s missing from the song, though, is that the bones are all connected by joints. And sometimes, those joints can hurt. Dr Stuart MacKenzie has been an orthopedic surgeon in Newcastle since 2013, and knows all about those aches and pains. He specializes in hip and knee surgery, as well as trauma surgery. After completing a degree in medical science in 1999, he capped off his undergraduate medical training at the University of Newcastle in 2002. With the completion of his internship and residency in the Hunter Region, he was ready to start orthopedic training. After qualifying as an orthopedic surgeon in 2011, Dr MacKenzie travelled the world to further his knowledge of hip and knee surgery. Along the way, he completed fellowships in Canada and England, and worked for six months in the USA in Portland, Oregon. Dr MacKenzie performed the first robotic-assisted hip replacement at Lingard Private Hospital in October 2016, bringing groundbreaking techniques to the medical community in Newcastle. The robot has more precise movements than
a human hand, and is able to maneuver in tighter spaces than a surgeon can. When he’s not operating at Lingard Private Hospital, Dr MacKenzie can be found at John Hunter Hospital, or in his consulting rooms at Merewether and Nelson Bay. He also sees patients in the public clinic at John Hunter. Prolonged or worsened pain can often be the first sign of trouble in the hips or the knees, and joint problems such as arthritis can often prevent you from living life to the fullest. Physical activity can be limited by stiff and sore joints, and the pain can hinder sleep. Dr MacKenzie treats hip and knee issues with physiotherapy and pain relief, but when the condition can no longer be managed, a hip or knee replacement is best. “Hip and knee arthritis particularly are very debilitating problems,” Dr MacKenzie said. “By the time patients see me, they have often been in pain for a long time – sometimes even years. They may have to use crutches to walk because the pain’s so bad. “After doing a hip or knee replacement, in a few weeks or even days, they’re up and
walking around.” The best part of the job, according to Dr MacKenzie, is seeing a patient satisfied with their treatment. “Hip replacement is often described as the most successful operation ever, and patients who have really bad arthritis in their knees or hips find that having a hip or knee replacement is a life-changing event,” he said. If you’re living with sore and stiff joints, visit Dr MacKenzie and get moving again.

sport Northstars hang in precarious position after narrow loss

After back-to-back Australian Ice Hockey League championships, the Newcastle Northstars now find themselves in a precarious position more than halfway through the 2017 season. The Northstars suffered a narrow 5-4 defeat to Perth Thunder at the weekend, leaving them languishing in seventh place. Newcastle started strongly on Sunday as Jonatan Ruth opened the scoring – his second of the season. In the dying moments of a penalty-filled first period, Perth’s Per Daniel Goransson halved the home team’s lead to 2-1. A big slapshot from the blue line by Newcastle defensive import Felix-Antoine Poulin extended the

Northstars’ lead to 3-1, but Perth responded just seconds later. Poulin was the first to make something happen in the third period, scoring to give Newcastle a comfortable 4-2 lead. However, the Thunder eventually drew level, sending the clash to a shootout. After four shots on goal each, it was the Thunder, with two successful shots on Northstars goaltender Charlie Smart, who walked away with the win. Newcastle will face the Sydney Bears on Saturday 8 July at Macquarie Ice Rink.

Supporting seniors to live happier, healthier lives at home
When Kerrie Burns witnessed her own grandparents moving into a nursing home and the subsequent deterioration of their health, she and her husband Mark were determined to start a company that would provide quality in-home care to seniors so that they can maintain their independence and live a full life. Home Care Assistance Newcastle is a locally owned and operated company that provides in home care to enable seniors to stay in their own home. They are an approved provider of government home care packages. Consumer-directed care is the pride of Home Care Assistance Newcastle, where support is tailored directly to their clients’ needs. The aging process affects everyone differently. Home Care Assistance Newcastle believes that every person and family is unique and the caring and support needs to be just as unique. Whether the client needs help with cooking dinner, showering, housework, or doing the shopping, support can be provided to meet those needs.
Mark and Kerrie Burns pride themselves on delivering quality in-home care for the elderly through their business, Home Care Assistance Newcastle.
“We take the time to really listen and understand our client’s preferences, wishes and dreams,” Kerrie said. It is easy for partners and extended families to be overwhelmed by an aging loved-one’s needs. Often the workload has been building and the stress levels rising before the need for help is recognised. The relief of sharing the care of a loved-one can be enormously beneficial to the wellbeing of everyone involved and allows family caregivers to resume their role as a loving and supportive family member. Home Care Assistance Newcastle’s support workers are trained in the Balanced Care Method of providing in home care - building and maintaining good-quality life, as well as longevity through physical and mental stimulation, good nutrition and upholding a sense of purpose. Activities are tailored with the senior to enable happier and healthier lives. Residential care is an expensive option compared to supporting seniors to live at home. When opportunity comes knocking
It wasn’t the lure of fame and fortune that drew Breanna Blick into pageantry, nor the chance to flaunt her natural beauty: it was her drive to raise awareness of a cause close to her heart. On Father’s Day in 2006, Breanna lost her dad, Wayne, to bowel cancer. She was six years old. From this day on, the Blick family, and, in particular, Breanna, made it their mission to raise awareness of bowel cancer and funds for research through Bowel Cancer Australia. “Losing my dad at such a young age had a profound impact on my life,” Breanna told Newcastle Weekly. “I learned the true value of life and to also never let an opportunity pass by.” So, when Breanna was scrolling through Facebook one day in 2015 and stumbled upon the Miss Teen Australia International beauty pageant, knowing entrants were required to fundraise for a
charity on the side, she leapt at the opportunity. She competed and won the title in Sydney last November, qualifying to enter the Miss Teen International pageant in West Virginia, USA, early next month. Through last year's pageant, Breanna raised $2,500 each for Bowel Cancer Australia and Surf Life Saving Australia (her dad being a former boatrower for Nobbys Surf Life Saving Club). This time, the 18-year-old from Wickham hopes to raise $10,000 for bowel cancer alone, to bolster the funds she has already raised for Bowel Cancer Australia. If Breanna makes it through to the finals, she will have the (albeit brief) chance to talk offthe-cuff about her chosen charity, which she is excited about. “I don’t really see it as pageantry; I’ve just done so much stuff for bowel cancer,” she said.

Long-time MC, Trials, aka Daniel Rankine – the man behind Adelaide’s Funkoars – and acclaimed producer, Tony Buchen, also feature on Camacho. Murray said the variety of artists had helped give his sixth album a different vibe.
“I got Trials to fatten it up a bit, the drums are quite beefy,” he said. “With Tony [Buchen], there was a bit more of a pop side to it, [while] Jon is quite a good songwriter and gave me some great options.” Murray fans can decide for themselves when he performs at The Cambridge Hotel on Thursday 27 July. Singer-songwriter Pete Murray’s career took off in mid-2003 with the release of his first album, Feeler. Numerous ARIA nominations, national tours and top 40 hits ensued. Despite his success, it is Murray’s latest body of work – Camacho – which he believes is most akin to the breakthrough album. “Musically it’s different, but it’s similar in [terms of] what people have been saying about it,” he said. “A lot of people loved that album [Feeler] and I’ve had plenty of great feedback on this one. “It’s a body of work that’s really solid from start to finish, which I think Feeler was as well.” Murray worked alongside a number of high-profile names for his latest release, including Evermore lead singer Jon Hume and Grammy award-

time out Crime thriller to give you chills this winter authentic feel to the novel. Growing up in Seattle, Cole was heavily influenced by true crime writer Ann Rule and how she wrote about the city and the Pacific Northwest. Seattle’s famous weather also provided the perfect backdrop for a crime thriller. “It’s a dreary, rainy sort of place,” she explains, “The sort of place where crimes would happen, and the characters also have this wornout, dreary look.” When Sergeant Wade MacKinnon turns up at a murder scene, he knows exactly who did it. Only thing is, the killer, Michael Rhodes, was executed a year ago. When other murders occur around the Seattle area, following the same modus operandi as Rhodes, Wade is the only person

Can a serial killer strike again from beyond the grave? In The Recipient, anything is possible. The first crime thriller from Port Stephens-based author Audrey Pflugrath, who goes by the pseudonym Audrey J. Cole, opens up the possibility that our minds are not truly our own. A registered nurse for 10 years, Cole drew on her clinical knowledge to write The Recipient as a medical mystery. “It doesn’t help with the police procedural stuff, though,” she laughs. “I consulted with a homicide detective on police procedures and crime detection.’’ Cole also consulted with a medical examiner about autopsy procedures and forensics, to get an
Newcastle artist John Turier certainly loves to mix it up. His mixed-media works have been displayed at Newcastle Regional Art Gallery, Lake Macquarie Art Gallery and Maitland Regional Art Gallery, as well as at Coventry Gallery and King Street Gallery in Sydney. His most famous work, Foundation Seed, stands on west King Street and is the tallest piece
of public art in Newcastle, towering over motorists and pedestrians at 14 metres tall. Turier’s latest exhibition Matchbox Horse, at Art Systems Wickham, features a mixture of drawing, painting and sculpture. “It’s all about material relationships, colour and painted surfaces,” Turier says. “I stretch silk over frames and that acts as a platform for paint. “I have also done mechanical works, exploring kinetics in sculpture.” As well as being an accomplished artist, and teaching art at Newcastle Art School, Turier is also a musician. He says that the processes for making art and music are very similar. “Writing lyrics based on poetic concepts and making physical works with found objects – it’s a
reactive process,” he explains. “You put it away, bring it out again, and add a little bit more to it. It’s like writing an essay.” When asked if his music life crosses into his art life and vice-versa, Turier laughs, “All the time!” “The colours are like the lyrics and you’re teasing out ideas. “It’s symbiotic, with an audio or a visual outcome.’’ Turier has also uploaded his music
onto Soundcloud, under the name of Johnny Bakerlite. With all of these projects going on, Turier certainly is a busy man. “Otherwise, we’d be bored!” laughs Turier. Matchbox Horse runs from 7 to 23 July at Art Systems Wickham, 40 Annie Street Wickham. Viewing hours are from 11am – 4pm, Friday to Sunday. - Alice Hennen

For some of them, this is the first thing they have ever made for public viewing.” Seeing the completion of the project has been bittersweet for Ms Madigan, because it meant the end of watching people work together and enjoy the creative process. Wallsend’s Nelson Street is looking a lot more colourful these days, with the addition of some pretty planters. Thanks to funding from MP Pat Conroy and Wallsend Town Business Association, who then commissioned local art organisation Art Mania to design and complete the community art project, the plant troughs not only beautify the main street, but have also unified the community. The planters are covered in mosaics with images reflecting Wallsend’s history, community and culture. A mixture of people from all walks of life, from students to people with disabilities, spent 60 hours on each planter over the period of 18 months. It’s a painstaking process, applying grout to the side of the

Choosing a statement chair
Turn to page 44 for more on statement chairs
When you find the right chair that complements your room, it will instantly inject some personality and enhance the overall look and feel of your space. Focus on Furniture marketing manager Samantha Clarke offers some simple tips to find the right style of chair: Measure up: Decide where you would like your statement chair to be placed in your room and measure the space carefully. Allow for plenty of leg room, a side table and optional footstool or ottoman.
Style it right: Before deciding on the style or types of material your chair
is made of, consider your existing décor. Is your room a contemporary, traditional, art deco or Scandi style? Is it casual or a more formal room? User friendly: How you will use your chair? Do you prefer a high or low back? Are you after a recliner or tub chair? Do you require a wider seat to fold your legs up on the seat or wider arms? The choice is yours.

July is pruning time, but that doesn’t mean you can be overzealous. Hold back the chainsaw and take stock of what needs to be cut. A range of plants can be pruned now, but care should be taken not to prune springflowering deciduous shrubs or flowering fruit trees that have been grown for their spring blossom. It is an ideal time to prune crepe myrtle, which should never be cut back to last year’s pruning nodes. Fuschia, duranta, grape vines, westringia, plumbago, viburnum and photinia will all respond to winter pruning. Pruning hydrangea seems to perplex many gardeners, but there is a simple approach: if you didn’t prune last summer, don’t cut back the stems that haven’t flowered. If pruning now, hydrangeas should be cut back to stems where there are two eyes beginning to shoot. Remember when fertilising hydrangea that flower colour can be influenced by the alkalinity or acidity of the fertiliser. Cow manure will encourage deeper colours, whereas poultry will increase alkalinity, creating lighter shades of mauve and pinks. Roses should not have been pruned prior to this month; the end of the month is early enough. Hold off on frost-prone areas until August, or whenever the late frosts are over. And never prune climbing roses until such time. Leaf curl should be controlled during July. Deciduous fruit trees are prone to this disease. Apply copper oxychloride during the last two weeks of the month, and again during the first two weeks of August. Although it is cold, don’t underestimate the ability of winter winds to dry out plants. Keep watering regularly, particularly newly-planted trees and shrubs.

PICK OF THE WEEK Taken Away Friday, PRIME7, 12pm, PG (1996) Former L.A. Law stars and real-life couple Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker do their best to inject some class into this by-the-numbers kidnapping drama in which the sick Eikenberry is taken and restaurant owner Tucker must go to extreme lengths to get her back. Notable mainly for an early role for X-Men’s James Marsden and less trying than it might have been thanks to the assured work of its experienced stars.

S.W.A.T.
The Incredible Hulk Monday, 7MATE, 8.30pm, M (2008) The big green guy returns in this somewhat dissimilar sequel where Edward Norton takes over from Eric Bana as Bruce Banner. This regeneration from director Louis Leterrier (The Transporter) sees scientist Banner searching for a way to escape his monstrous persona, and resigned to living a life away from his love, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler). But, in a bid to lure Banner out of hiding, a sinister military man (Tim Roth) endows himself with Hulk-like abilities, forcing Banner to come to the aid of the people of New York City.
Saturday, 7MATE, 10pm, M (2003) Director Clark Johnson celebrates gun metal in all its forms, to the point that even Michelle Rodriguez as the token female fails to get a look-in ahead of the armoury. Samuel L. Jackson is the veteran Special Weapons and Tactics leader charged with training a young, pretty team (including Rodriguez, Colin Farrell and LL Cool J). Their first major assignment is to transport a highly wanted French criminal (Olivier Martinez) to a federal prison. Good, oldfashioned action with snappy dialogue is let down by some stodgy direction.

The Full Moon on the 9th indicates that you must try to cultivate some serenity and rise above any hostility or criticism. A little feigned disinterest on your part may help, especially if partners or certain family members seem determined to find fault with everything you say or do.
The Full Moon on the 9th indicates that issues in your closest relationships are likely, and no matter how strongly you feel, you simply can’t let your emotions control your actions. Your heart may be hinting at one alternative, but your head should be listened to. Listen to both sides.
The Full Moon on the 9th indicates that you will need to develop some fancy footwork if you want to avoid disagreements at home. The planets signify that your patience and energy are being drained. However, this is not the time to give into temptation or take short cuts.
The Full Moon on the 9th occurs in your sign and this could make you insecure or difficult to approach. Keep your head down and get on with trivial work rather than anything of great importance. Be sure to get some rest as you might be feeling somewhat run down.

The Full Moon on the 9th is throwing the emphasis on foreign affairs and travel, and indicates that you are about to make a bid for freedom and independence. Woe betide anyone who tries to get in your way; they will be trampled underfoot.
The Full Moon on the 9th indicates that there are changes happening in the lives of workmates which put extra pressure on you. The thing to do is to take everything one step at a time. You need to use the time for putting finishing touches to outstanding work.
The Full Moon on the 9th indicates a disagreement could become quite intense. Chances are it has nothing to do with you personally but you could still find yourself on the defensive. Other domestic battles should be completely avoided, otherwise you could find yourself in a dilemma.
The 9 July Full Moon falls in your 12th house which is the secretive part of your chart. This suggests that no matter how hard you try, you simply won’t be able to get your hands on all the facts and figures you need. Others seem to be deliberately elusive.
SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21
PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20
The 9 July Full Moon falls in the area of possessions which could become lost, mislaid or even stolen, so be wary, particularly when in crowds. Lastly, on no account should you spend in order to impress. You will end up all the poorer. Just be yourself, that’s all that is required.
The Full Moon on the 9th indicates there may be some issues with friends; perhaps one friend is going through a difficult time and needs some support whilst another friend may need to cancel an arrangement with you through no fault of their own. Don’t take it personally.
GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 The Full Moon on the 9th is in your 8th house and indicates there are occasions when you sink your teeth into arguments and refuse to let go. You must find a better way of approaching certain people. You need to be subtle, strategic and even devious if required.
VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23 The Full Moon on the 9th indicates that your concentration may not be the greatest, so do your best to avoid tedious people and detailed jobs. Travel plans may not run according to schedule either, so double check your schedule and be prepared for delays.

The Great Australian Baking Book We all have a favourite baked treat from our childhood: happy memories of Anzac biscuits still warm from the oven and slightly floppy because we were too impatient to wait for them to set; homemade sausage rolls spraying flaky pastry everywhere and attracting the inevitable tut-tutting; high-tea treats of scones and sponge cakes with lashings of cream and jam; and desserts we loved so much that we were never too full for a second helping – pavlova, trifle, apple crumble and sticky toffee pudding.
