This week...

From the editor It's been a whirlwind couple of weeks – short working weeks, at that – thanks to a string of public holidays. I hope you have lapped up the extra time with friends and family, as have I. Around here, short working weeks can be challenging, as we are tasked with producing the same, great content we do every week, in a shorter amount of time. But fear not, loyal readers: this week's edition is no exception.

A personal favourite of mine is the story of Zarin Cenna, a local artist whose career is forging ahead in great strides – all because she chose to chase after her dreams. Zarin and I went to high school together, and, even back then, she would doodle on anything she could get her hands on. I truly believe Newcastle Weekly has a place and a purpose to shine a spotlight on local, emerging artists, so it brings me great pleasure and pride to tell Zarin's story.

Our news section, this week, is very transport and development-focused, harking back to the basics of 'rates, roads and rubbish' – all of which are big talking points in communities like ours.

bid to improve traffic safety along Hillsborough Road has so far proven fruitless.

That’s according to community organiser Michael Nolan, who says residents won’t give up the fight.

Mr Nolan claims drivers turning onto Hillsborough Road from Chadwick Street and Higham Road, in Hillsborough, face up to a 15-minute wait until traffic clears at about 9.30am.

And, judging by the number of people who showed up to a recent community meeting to discuss the issue, it’s a concern for many.

“So many residents, including people who’ve lived here for 40 years, and I’ve been here for 20 years myself, all came to the meeting with stories of near misses and accidents,” Mr Nolan says.

The meeting, which Mr Nolan described as “productive”, attracted more than 100 concerned residents, plus the likes of Charlestown MP Jodie Harrison, Lake Macquarie mayor Kay Fraser and councillors.

Mr Nolan believes Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) has taken “too long” to deliver an outcome on the issue. He says residents are still waiting on a traffic study that the RMS started back in 2012.

“It’s frustrating for us, considering we have so many people who have written emails and made calls,” he says.

“We always get correspondence back, but by the time something looks like happening there seems to be a change [in personnel] at the RMS and it gets delayed again.”

An RMS spokesperson said the results from its Lake Macquarie traffic study would be released later this year. “[The Lake Macquarie Network Study] will assess the consideration of intersection treatments along Hillsborough Road and help to determine priorities for future improvements,” the spokesperson said.

“The community will be invited to comment [on the results of the study] before it is finalised.”

news Pool’s construction dives into final stages It has been billed as an exciting and highly-anticipated project for the people of Maitland.

And, now, the development of a new 25-metre heated indoor swimming pool is nearing completion.

The $8.5 million project will also feature a pool hall and covered walkway, as well as alterations to the existing amenities.

It is being built on land at the same site as the current Maitland Aquatics Centre.

Maitland City Council’s senior project architect, Aaron Cook, says construction has progressed well.

“Currently the contractors are completing works to the interior of the facility including pool tiling and installation of the air conditioning and ventilation equipment,” he says.

“Between now and when the facility is scheduled for completion, work will include external glazing, the installation of the pool water treatment equipment, as well as some external works to footpaths, turf and driveways.

“We’re on track to finalise the work on time and

Maitland mayor Peter Blackmore said earlier the indoor pool would be an important facility for the community.

“It is great news for families, keen swimmers and people who use the pools for fitness and aqua aerobics,” he said.

“Our aquatic centres in Maitland and East Maitland are hugely popular, and the new pool will complement these facilities, providing yearround access and improved aquatic services.

“This new pool is an important part of ensuring that our city continues to have the firstclass sporting and recreation facilities that the people of Maitland expect.”

The indoor pool has been part of a wider upgrade of sporting facilities in Maitland.

It is part of the council’s capital works program, with funding provided through Section 94 development fees.

Other projects included the netball building in Maitland Park and the construction of a new grandstand at No.1 Sportsground.

Awabakal Aboriginal Land Council will receive $150,000 to stabilise the old post office in Newcastle.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald MLC, recently announced the funding for the heritage-listed building.

It was awarded under the state government’s heritage grants program.

The announcement marks this year’s Australian Heritage Festival, which runs until 21 May. Mr MacDonald said communities played an important role in maintaining and promoting local heritage.

“Our local heritage speaks to our history so it is important to protect, promote and celebrate it,” he said.

Councils, Aboriginal organisations, peak heritage organisations and owners of heritage items have been awarded a share of $5.4 million in grant funding as part of the program.

Roads a top priority

The state government’s decision to outsource the manufacturing of a new intercity rail fleet has left Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery deeply concerned.

The new rail fleet will replace trains carrying people from Sydney to the Central Coast, Newcastle, the Blue Mountains and the South Coast.

While the benefits will be felt locally, the government has engaged a South Korean manufacturer to build the new fleet, through a $2.3 billion contract.

Cessnock council is calling on the state government to make roads a priority.

Councillors voted unanimously to seek support from various government officials in a bid to work towards a solution for Cessnock’s ageing state road network.

The council will pursue an urgent meeting with the NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight; the NSW Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter; and the state member for Cessnock.

Cessnock mayor Bob Pynsent said the united stance of councillors reflected the current frustration levels in the community.

“The safety of our road users is paramount, prompting the decision to pursue new avenues to gain the support of the state government and secure much-needed funding to enable these vital works to take place,” Cr Pynsent said.

In response to this, Ms Hornery has launched a petition, calling on the trains to be built in NSW by local workers.

She claimed hundreds of jobs would be lost at the Downer EDI site in Cardiff.

“Spending that money overseas will be seen in the future with higher unemployment and less opportunities,” she said.

“The government needs to be willing to invest in the Hunter; we have two very successful train manufacturers here.

“The Victorian state government has recently procured a new fleet of trains from a local manufacturer at a competitive price, demonstrating that local workers and local businesses are well equipped to design and build these new trains.

“I am calling on the government to cancel this contract, re-issue the tender for a fit-for-purpose train and ensure the new intercity rail fleet is built here in NSW by local workers.”

The new rail fleet will come into service progressively, with the first trains expected to be rolled out in 2019.

Some of the mooted features include wider seats, charging stations for mobile devices, digital screens and announcements, and modern air conditioning.

She’s lived, in her own words, a “very fortunate” life.

St Francis Retirement Village Eleebana resident Marj Blakemore celebrated her 100th birthday last Wednesday.

Surrounded by family and friends, she told stories and recited a poem before reflecting on her milestone.

“I’ve lived a wonderful life,” she said.

“My advice is just to be content, make yourself as happy as you can and treat each day as best you can.”

Born in Hamilton, Marj has lived in the region her whole life, spending the majority of it in New Lambton.

Despite living through The Great Depression, Marj has mostly fond memories of her upbringing.

“I was an only child [and] had a very happy existence in those days; I knew all of my neighbours and was very fortunate,” she said.

Marj went on to work as a secretary in Scott Street for a decade and married husband Jesse, who was on his final leave from the army, in January 1944.

Following his death in 1975, she spent years taking care of her mother. Now, after residing at the retirement village for the past four years, she has nothing but praise for those who are caring for her.

Palliative care gaps a concern It can make a huge difference to those suffering from a serious illness.

Palliative care provides access to effective pain management as well as emotional and social support.

But a lack of services available across the state is an issue of great

concern to the Hunter Cancer Action Network (CAN).

Though some people with advanced or terminal cancer are able to use palliative care when and where they need it, many others miss out due to a serious shortage

of specialised doctors and nurses.

Hunter CAN spokesperson Barbara Gaudry said the network wanted to help change that. “[A] lack of palliative care can put a terrible burden on patients and their families at a time of great need,” she said.

“I know that from the sad stories that I hear from affected patients and carers and from personal experience too.

“It’s very sad to think that many people in New South Wales, particularly in communities like the Hunter, can’t access specialist palliative care and support.

“Although the current palliative care doctors and nurses do a wonderful job, we know they are under great pressure because of the staff shortages. This situation must change.”

In order to highlight the

shortage, Cancer Council NSW is calling on cancer patients, carers and families in the Hunter who have been affected by advanced or terminal cancer within the last five years to share their journey.

Patients and carers can call the 13 11 20 Information and Support service to answer a short series of questions with a health professional, in confidence, until Sunday 30 April.

Alternatively, there is an online questionnaire available at cancercouncil.com.au/ palliativecare The information collected will help paint a picture of the difference palliative care staff make to people’s lives, as well as the impact that gaps in access to services have on the Hunter community.

Growing up in suburban Sydney as a young Muslim girl with Bangladeshi roots, Zarin Cenna often wrestled with her identity.

Her parents moved to Australia three years before she was born, and they lived there until she was four.

“Being Muslim, that was a big thing, so it was hard to form a clear identity,” she said.

The first of his concerts in Newcastle will take place on Wednesday 10 May, while the following night’s performance is sold out.

Banking on local talent It’s been a wild ride for Newcastle-based glass artist Lee Howes and her husband, Tim, over the past 18 months, but the couple are finally ready to share with the city their latest project.

The Howes sold their family home in Waratah and bought a former bank building in Hunter Street, and have been working tirelessly to transform it.

The old building has been reborn as The Bank Glass Gallery

– a contemporary space for Lee to showcase her works, while also supporting the work of other local artists.

It took a year to get the gallery up and running, which has culminated in the gallery’s first group exhibition.

Bush to Beach opens today (Thursday 27 April), and features several local artists’ work in a range of mediums, including photography, painting, ceramics,

mixed media, textiles, jewellery, and glass.

Howes’ own work is widely known both nationally and internationally, with her glass pieces chosen for the prestigious Ranamok and Waterhouse exhibitions in Australia and Emerge in the USA. She said she and her husband understood the challenges of “becoming known” in the field of arts, and they hoped to help Hunter-based artists with this challenge.

“There is so much great art sitting in people’s back rooms and studios that is never seen,” Howes said.

“It would be great to give it a chance to be viewed by a wider audience.”

in the garden Battle of the grasses Today’s garden designs rely heavily on grasses – not lawns, but ornamental species like Purple Fountain Grass and cordylines.

Where did the battle of the grasses begin? It all began with the humble mondo grass, and progressed to Liriope muscari, better known as Evergreen Giant. This hardy plant bears spikes of purple flowers and looks great in a pot or planted out in clumps to provide accents.

Cordylines are frequently used as a garden specimen; their colours provide a strong feature amongst green.

A wonderful example is Cordyline Nigra, which will grow to 1.8 metres, featuring rich black-green, strap-like leaves. It will grow in full sun or part shade and looks great in a tropical garden with palms and Zanadus.

Some cordyline varities become unsightly when they grow tall. They look great when small in a pot.

Region on track to reach housing benchmarks A “significant” increase in newhome building approvals across sections of the Lower Hunter has been hailed by the Housing Industry Association (HIA).

The latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) indicate that activity in some outer fringes of the region have been performing well.

In the year to February 2017, 3,760 approvals were issued for new dwellings in the Hunter region, with Maitland, Cessnock and Singleton accounting for 1,333 or 35% of those approvals. This is an increase of 23% year-on-year.

HIA Hunter director Craig Jennion said, should this upward trend continue, the region would do well to reach the housing benchmarks outlined in the Hunter Regional Plan 2036. “[If] the average Hunter region building approvals of the last five

calendar years continue for the life of the plan, then the aim of 70,000 additional dwellings will be exceeded by 10%,” Mr Jennion said.

The Cessnock local government area, in particular, appears to exceed housing projections by 29%.

Mr Jennion said the new Huntlee project had been a hotspot for Cessnock, with an estimated 106 dwelling approvals last year.

“The approval of this, and other greenfield projects in recent years, has ensured there is not as large a problem of land supply bottlenecks that occurs in other locations in the Hunter, ensuring better outcomes in this area,” he said.

“A key component of the Hunter’s success will be how well local government areas away from the coast can deliver increased dwellings in both green field and urban renewal locations.”
