From the editor It seems, in recent times, the Easter Bunny has become more like his cousin, Santa Claus, in that he, too, likes to give gifts. While this isn't a new phenomenon, it does beg the question: isn't chocolate enough? We empty our pockets at Christmas and on birthdays – why do we need to spend more on yet another holiday, not intended for commercialisation in the first place? Being an only child for the first 11 years of my life, gifts were, admittedly, included in my Easter spoils; books, pyjamas, you name it – one year the Easter Bunny even brought me a fishing rod (I spent a lot of my childhood outdoors). Now, as an adult, I'm lucky to snaffle half-price chocolate on Easter Monday. C'est la vie. No matter which side of the Easter gift-giving fence you sit on, I think we can all agree that, much like Christmas, it's a holiday best spent with the ones you love. This week's edition is Easterinspired from cover to cover. There's our cover star, of course – a gorgeous craft project, courtesy of Spotlight, which you'll find on page 34; a delicious hot cross bun recipe on page 30; and an Easter giveaway on page 32.

Hunter Multicultural Community Drug Action Team chairperson Tony Brown speaks at the ‘Make FASD History in Newcastle’ campaign launch.

One of the FASD awareness and prevention posters.

Newcastle taskforce a go he first taskforce in the state – and possibly Australia – to address alcohol-related birth defects and disorders in children has been established in Newcastle. The federal government has granted approval for the creation of a Local Community Drug Action Team, or LDAT, to oversee the ‘Make FASD History in Newcastle’ campaign. FASD refers to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders – the name given to the group of birth defects and disorders caused by drinking alcohol while pregnant. It can cause a range of permanent physical, intellectual and developmental disabilities. The Newcastle-based Hunter Multicultural Community Drug Action Team will partner with the LDAT to help raise awareness of FASD and reduce its prevalence, starting with an educational campaign, launched at Wallsend Health Campus last Thursday. About 100 representatives from government and non-government agencies in the health and community sectors gathered for the first look at the ‘Make FASD History in Newcastle’ posters and brochures, which are available online and will soon be distributed among the community.

Apply now for Newcastle City Council funding supporting events, activities and projects for the Newcastle community Events sponsorships up to $25,000 Economic development sponsorships up to $20,000 Community assistance grants up to $5,000 Recreation facilities grants up to $5,000

Last year, in conjunction with Northern Settlement Services and Hunter New England Drug and Alcohol Services, the Hunter Multicultural Community Drug Action Team surveyed 142 adults (predominantly women) of 42 nationalities to canvass their level of FASD awareness. The vast majority had a general awareness of the harmful effect of alcohol on babies, but little was known of the devastating consequences it can have. Armed with this information, and in consultation with the NSW Multicultural Health Communication Service, the multicultural community drug action team initiated the posters and brochures. Hunter Multicultural Community Drug Action Team chairperson Tony Brown said this was a great way to address this “insidious” issue. “We know that just posters by themselves won’t solve the problem, but they’re a great conversationstarter,” he said. This is only the beginning, with the educational campaign being a prelude to practical prevention strategies. Funding is still being secured for the Local Community Drug Action Team. - Georgia Osland

Housing proposal hits a snag engineering, car park design and waste. Mrs Taouk was also invited to respond to the 2500 public submissions formally lodged with the council. Newcastle Weekly reported in January that the $1.3 million development proposal had met strong opposition from some Swansea residents. Lake Macquarie Concerned Citizens gathered on-site in Josephson Street, last Saturday, for its third meeting regarding this particular proposal. The group is concerned about the development’s character, social impact, and safety implications. But above all, residents are worried about the “transient” types of people who would be living in the temporary accommodation. Owner-occupier Steve Nelson believes it will act as “a halfway house for people re-assimilating” into the community. The original development application refutes this, stating the units could accommodate awayfrom-home workers; individuals and families under housing stress; and those in need of emergency housing due to circumstances beyond their control, for up to 12 months at a time.

A park-and-ride shuttle service will run from the University of Newcastle’s Callaghan campus to the new, inner-city campus when it opens in July. Three-hundred parking spaces will be added to the Callaghan campus, where students can park and catch the free shuttle to the Hunter Street campus. The shuttle will run all day at at least half-hourly intervals. Along with the shuttle service, the university is also trialling a new ride-sharing app, via which students can register as a potential ride-sharer and match up with others who live close by and have similar travel patterns.

A development application for a mixed-use boarding house in Swansea is at tipping point. At the time of printing, Lake Macquarie council was awaiting a response from the developer – a private applicant by the name of Norma Taouk – on its request for more information regarding the proposal for 11 self-contained bedrooms; a three-bedroom manager’s residence; and a commercial space. Sent by the council’s principal development planner, Chris Dwyer, on 16 March, Mrs Taouk had 28 days (until tomorrow – 14 April) to provide the extra information or request an extension. If she did nothing, the application would be referred to councillors for determination, recommended by council staff for refusal. “Additional information is requested to detail the development in more certain terms, and to address areas of the proposal that are either not known or require further refinement and design work to be acceptable,” Mr Dwyer wrote. The extra information required was in regard to social impact, building design and neighbour impacts, acoustics, landscape and design,

news MJH Group chief information officer Brett Wilson is ready to participate in St Vincent de Paul Society’s CEO Sleepout again this year.

Braving the cold for a cause If you think it’s been a little chilly at night lately, try putting yourself in the shoes of those with no home to go to, and no warm bed to sleep in. High-profile Hunter CEOs will do just that on 22 June when they brave the elements for St Vincent de Paul Society’s annual CEO Sleepout. In its fourth year, the event does away with all creature comforts

for the night, to give participants a glimpse of the struggles many people experiencing homelessness face night in, night out. More than 100,000 people in Australia are homeless. The CEO Sleepout aims to bring attention to the issue, while raising money for local assistance programs, such as the Matthew Talbot Homeless Service, a

Newcastle-based outreach service for men. Last year sleepout participants raised $117,000, which helped provide assistance to more than 18,000 people. In the lead-up to this year’s event, a handful of CEOs gathered at the St Vincent de Paul Society in Newcastle, last Thursday, to mark the event launch. Before the CEOs spend the night sleeping in the cold, they learn about the services Vinnes offers and hear first-hand from people who have experience difficult circumstances that led to homelessness. The theme of this year’s event is ‘Homelessness Doesn’t Have a Postcode’. The 2017 CEO Sleepout will take place at McDonald Jones Stadium on 22 June. Visit ceosleepout.org.au to register. - Georgia Osland

Foreshore facelift to get under way Works to refurbish Warners Bay foreshore are scheduled to start next Tuesday 18 April. Improvements to the site include new plaza areas; extending the sandstone steps down onto the foreshore; adjusting the shared pathway; and installing new seating and lighting. A glow-in-the-dark section of pavement, representing the lake, will be a shining addition to the renovations. Pedestrians can still use the footpath; however, parts of the foreshore will be closed to the public. The project is expected to wrap up by late 2017.

A penny for young people’s thoughts Mission Australia is all ears to hear what’s on young people’s minds. With the launch of the organisation’s 16th annual Youth Survey, young people of Newcastle have a platform to share their hopes, fears and aspirations. The feedback from each survey provides valuable insight into the lives of Australia’s youth. This insight helps Mission Australia and other community groups shape their work, and influences government decisionmaking. Results from last year’s survey of 7,087 respondents across New South Wales (nearly 22,000 Australiawide), showed the top three most important issues for young people across the state were: drugs and alcohol; equity and discrimination;

and, for the first time in the survey’s 15-year history, mental health issues. Mental health has always been a concern for young people, with mentions of the issue doubling since 2011. Coping with stress; school or study problems; and body image made the top three personal concerns of young people. Mission Australia’s 2017 Youth Survey is now open to people aged 15 to 19 years old. To take part, visit missionaustralia.com.au/ youthsurvey, and don’t forget to spread the word by using the hashtag #YouthSurvey2017 online. The survey closes at the end of July, with results to be analysed and released before the end of the year. - Alice Hennen

Council’s open-burning policy is on fire Rural Lake Macquarie residents can now burn small piles of garden waste on their properties, in accordance with a new open-burning policy hot from Lake Macquarie council. Open burning, or pile burns, will be permitted on land greater than 4000 square metres in size, and any land zoned as an environmental rural landscape, farm or private

recreation under the Lake Macquarie Environmental Plan. The policy allows landowners to self-manage dead, dry vegetation waste. Landowners are still subject to no-burn notices and total fire bans during the bushfire season (1 October to 31 March), and will still need to apply for a fire permit during this time.

Belmont Baths set to be reinstated The return of fully-netted, enclosed swimming baths looks like a sure thing for Belmont, after Lake Macquarie council voted in favour of their construction at Monday night’s standing committee meeting. The council’s favourable recommendation will be considered at the next ordinary meeting on Monday 24 April. As Newcastle Weekly had previously reported, the Belmont community had been pushing to reinstate the baths at Brooks Parade for some time. Efforts ramped up after the April 2015 storm, when the existing jetty was washed away. The council will consider enclosing the new baths with a finger jetty and accessible ramp.

Artist Shane Kennedy shows off some of the community’s work in Hamilton South.

Little boxes on the southside

NW0683

A spray of colour has brightened up a Hamilton South public housing estate. Thanks to Newcastle council’s Make Your Place Grant program and funding from Family and Community Services, through its Social Housing Community Improvement program, residents

12

of Fowler Street and surrounds will notice a splash of colour around their neighbourhood. Samaritans has been working with local artist Shane Kennedy, of UP&UP, to give letterboxes around the estate a facelift, and brighten up what can be an otherwise dull and dreary environment.

Residents were actively involved in the process of designing templates and painting the letterboxes. Project coordinator Harmony Wilson said it made the neighbourhood look “more inviting”. With a fresh paint job, bright colours and cool designs, the letterboxes are now an object of beauty as well as function. The colourful designs also act as a graffiti deterrent. With a push for more funding, Samaritans and UP&UP are hoping to give more letterboxes a makevover, and paint a mural to help make the neighbourhood more inviting for both residents and visitors. Goalposts shift for Williamtown The goalposts have shifted once again for Williamtown ‘red zone’ residents, who have been told by the Department of Defence not to eat home-grown meat or produce. In light of Food Standards Australia New Zealand’s decision to reduce the safe drinking level of water containing perfluoroalkyl chemicals (namely PFOS and PFOA, both of which were used for years at Williamtown RAAF base), Defence has reworked its risk assessment of the area and released new recommendations. All residents inside the affected ‘red zone’ area should now avoid eating home-grown fruit, vegetables, eggs and red meat, cow’s milk and locally-caught fish.

Watch out Guinness World Record – Hunter crocheters are confident they can set a new record for the most amount of people crocheting at once.

Crafty crocheters attempt to break world record The current world record is 485 people crocheting at the same time and, by hook or by crook, event organiser Tracey Franks is sure the region will have no ‘treble’ smashing it. Bring your wool and hooks to Singleton Civic Centre Sunday 30 April to be part of the madness.

A

Long thought of as a hobby of grandmas all over the world, crocheting is weaving its way back into popularity. Later this month, Hunter crocheters will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most amount of people crocheting at once.

IM IST T R

There’ll be a crash course in crocheting for anyone wanting to learn the ways of the wool (or brushing up on the basics) at 9am, before the attempt officially starts at 10.45am. Entrants are asked to bring a four-millimetre crochet hook and eight-ply yarn, or a current workin-progress. Any leftover squares made during the attempt can be donated to make up blankets for charities. The Guinness World Record attempt is part of the rich fabric that makes up Singleton Festival, which features a fun-filled fortnight of food, wine, music and entertainment. Register for the crocheting event before 26 April and go into the draw to win some great prizes. Phone the Singleton Visitor Information and Enterprise Centre on 6571 5888. Upgrade for local sports fields Fresh ground awaits sporting teams across Newcastle after the council teamed up with freight giant Aurizon to resurface three well-loved playing fields. Tuxford Park at Shortland; Alder Park at New Lambton; and Gibbs Brothers Oval at Merewether have all been done up with new turf, lighting, fences, drainage and irrigation ready for the football season. After ticking the sports grounds off the to-do list, Newcastle council is turning its attention to other sports grounds that need a bit of love.

news Government needs to act now on contamination: Crakanthorp Soil contamination is at the top of Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp’s agenda. The state MP has called upon the government to address the issue of soil contamination in Newcastle, unearthed earlier this year. A Macquarie University report revealed in January that large parts of Newcastle contained soil with a concerning cocktail of heavy metals, residual from the city’s industrial history. Mr Crakanthorp said the report had been met with “total silence” from the Berejiklian government. He wrote to the Minister for Environment Gabrielle Upton in January, asking for a meeting to discuss the next steps to be

taken with the NSW Environment Protection Authority. Mr Crakanthorp was reportedly told the minister needed to be briefed on the issue before she would meet with him. He said he was concerned about the government’s lack of urgency on the issue, and residents needed to know what they could do, and if there were any health risks; drawing similarities between this case and the Williamtown RAAF base chemical contamination. “We don’t want another Williamtown debacle, but it would appear that the government is happier to ignore the existence of this report than deal with it,” Mr Crakanthorp said. “The time to act is now.”

The newly-unveiled Maitland Hospital Sensory Garden.

been four years in the making, and was made possible through fundraising by The Maitland Hospital Volunteers Inc. and generous donations by sponsors and supporters.

It provides a place for patients, staff and visitors to escape the hospital environment. Brightly-coloured stepping stones; a tub of sweet-smelling herbs; and a sound tunnel are among the garden’s features, as well as ample seating, including a bench seat donated by the Paterson branch of the Country Women’s Association. Hospital volunteer Ben Graham raised funds for a giraffe and tortoise statue, which were named through a staff incentive program at the hospital. The sensory garden also provides the perfect backdrop for Love Replaces Hurt, a photographic exhibition by Michelle Morgan Ward. Thirty-five images hang on the hospital’s walls, with new images appearing in the gallery in mid-June. The photographic exhibition is part of the Maitland Hospital Art for Health program, which promotes healing through artistic expression. - Alice Hennen

Tea rooms with a twist After lengthy renovations, the former Memorial Baby Health Centre in Lambton has been reborn. Husband and wife Nevine and Bruce Adlam, who own The Vintage Rose Café and Memory Lane Antique & Décor – also in Elder Street – signed a lease on the period building last September. The couple reopened the building last week as family-friendly tea rooms. In keeping with the building’s heritage, the tea rooms are furnished with décor and fine bone china from yesteryear, serving a variety of food as well as coffee and cake. By all appearances, it might look

like your average business, but Nevine and Bruce are using their not-for-profit enterprise, The Vintage Rose Café, as a training ground for their tea room employees – many of whom are National Disability Insurance Scheme clients, and trainees looking to find their feet. “Unemployment is just so high, and I have a heart to help the disadvantaged and the unemployed,” Nevine said. The tea room staff will learn barista, hospitality and business management skills. Lambton Park Tea Rooms is open daily from 8am. - Georgia Osland

Museum Express’ David Owens shows the kids at John Hunter Hospital School the wonders of the scientific world.

All aboard, first stop fun Being in hospital for an extended period of time can be boring for anyone, let alone children. But going back to school isn’t really an option when you’re fighting a chronic illness, or you’re laid up with a major injury. The John Hunter Hospital School brings learning to kids who miss school for these reasons. And they’ve enlisted Newcastle Museum’s outreach program, Museum Express, to bring scientific fun into the classroom. The kids were in for a treat, last week, when chemicals were on the classroom agenda. Museum Express’ David Owens demonstrated cool chemical reactions, delighted kids with fizzy

sherbet, and launched vinegar and bicarb soda-powered rockets around the Starlight Room. Scientific learning took the form of laughter and amazement as children and their parents, as well as staff, were wowed by the spectacular experiments and the fascinating facts about chemicals. Museum Express brings scientific education, presented by a qualified teacher, to primary schools throughout the Hunter and Central Coast regions. Last year, Museum Express presented 33 shows to 3,248 primary schools in the area. School holiday shows proved to be a big hit, with 10,789 people attending last year.

A birthday Knight to remember When you live and breathe NRL, what better way to celebrate your birthday than at the footy? Newcastle Knights fan Patty Smith kicked off her 95th birthday with her beloved football team at their practice session last Thursday. After practice, the team surprised her with a cake and sang happy birthday in the sheds. Patty was also a special guest at Friday’s match against the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, and while the Knights didn’t win, she still enjoyed herself. “[The Knights] are very special people and I love all the boys,” Patty said. Growing up in Tighes Hill and Gateshead, Patty says NRL is the only game she’s ever known and watched. She became a member of the Newcastle Knights in 1988 and

Newcastle Knights player Dane Gagai with one of his biggest fans, Patty Smith.

has only missed two games since the club’s inception. Her favourite moment in the Knights’ history was the 1997 win against Manly in the grand final. “I couldn’t believe it when they won,” she said. Her verdict of the 2017 season so far is that they could do a little better, and she hopes to see them win more games. - Alice Hennen

School taking out top gong in the challenging 15-kilometre schools course, starting and finishing at Pelaw Main Public School. Hot on their heels was St Joseph’s Primary School (Charlestown), with a second team from Kurri Kurri Public School finishing in third place. Now in its third year, the main event saw just shy of 300 of the Hunter Region’s mountain bike enthusiasts register. It involves a series of events, ranging in difficulty from a 10km family ride to a 60km dash, on both dirt and road surfaces. The entire event raises muchneeded funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. The service’s community liaison officer, Barry Walton, dubbed the day a huge success.

It was a tough loss for the Newcastle Knights last Friday night at McDonald Jones Stadium, going down 22-12 to the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. The score sat comfortably at 6-0 in favour of Knights just inside of half-time. However, the Bulldogs snuck in a score just as the half-time siren sounded. Dane Gagai tried to take back the lead for the Knights, but any ground he’d gained was lost when Sione Mata’utia made illegal contact with the defence. Gagai managed to keep the ball away from the Bulldogs’ Morris twins and scored in the corner, bringing the Knights back into the lead – only to have Mata’utia lose the ball when he attempted to ground a grubber.

Newcastle Knights’ Nathan Ross plants the ball to score after a mid-air tackle.

Even though the Knights didn’t secure a win, fans were treated to a spectacular leap from Nathan Ross as he reeled in a Hodkinson kick. Despite Ross being tackled midair, he managed to grab the ball and plant it in the corner. The Knights are now sitting last on the NRL 2017 Telstra Premiership ladder. Newcastle takes on the Roosters this Friday 14 April at McDonald Jones Stadium. Kick-off is at 6pm.

Dr Stuart MacKenzie advertising moment

Orthopedic surgeon Dr Stuart MacKenzie can help sort out your joint problems for good. Photo (above): Peter Stoop

Get to the bare bones of your joint problems

As the song goes, the foot bone’s connected to the shin bone, and the shin bone’s connected to the thigh bone. hat’s missing from the song, though, is that the bones are all connected by joints. And sometimes, those joints can hurt. Dr Stuart MacKenzie has been an orthopedic surgeon in Newcastle since 2013, and knows all about those aches and pains. He specializes in hip and knee surgery, as well as trauma surgery. After completing a degree in medical science in 1999, he capped off his undergraduate medical training at the University of Newcastle in 2002. With the completion of his internship and residency in the Hunter Region, he was ready to start orthopedic training. After qualifying as an orthopedic surgeon in 2011, Dr MacKenzie travelled the world to further his knowledge of hip and knee surgery. Along the way, he completed fellowships in Canada and England, and worked for six months in the USA in Portland, Oregon. Dr MacKenzie performed the first robotic-assisted hip replacement at Lingard Private Hospital in October 2016, bringing groundbreaking techniques to the medical community in Newcastle. The robot has more precise movements than

a human hand, and is able to maneuver in tighter spaces than a surgeon can. When he’s not operating at Lingard Private Hospital, Dr MacKenzie can be found at John Hunter Hospital, or in his consulting rooms at Merewether and Nelson Bay. He also sees patients in the public clinic at John Hunter. Prolonged or worsened pain can often be the first sign of trouble in the hips or the knees, and joint problems such as arthritis can often prevent you from living life to the fullest. Physical activity can be limited by stiff and sore joints, and the pain can hinder sleep. Dr MacKenzie treats hip and knee issues with physiotherapy and pain relief, but when the condition can no longer be managed, a hip or knee replacement is best. “Hip and knee arthritis particularly are very debilitating problems,” Dr MacKenzie said. “By the time patients see me, they have often been in pain for a long time – sometimes even years. They may have to use crutches to walk because the pain’s so bad. “After doing a hip or knee replacement, in a few weeks or even days, they’re up and

walking around.” The best part of the job, according to Dr MacKenzie, is seeing a patient satisfied with their treatment. “Hip replacement is often described as the most successful operation ever, and patients who have really bad arthritis in their knees or hips find that having a hip or knee replacement is a life-changing event,” he said. If you’re living with sore and stiff joints, visit Dr MacKenzie and get moving again.

POTTERY

In 20 years at the (pottery) wheel, it wasn’t until she finished the works for her latest exhibition, Ole, that she really felt she was getting to know the medium well. She does have one goal in mind when working with clay, though.

Maitland potter Anne Gazzard always had a fascination with clay and pottery, and a recent trip to Spain cemented her love for the earthy element. Clay is a challenging medium, according to Anne.

”I enjoy good form and my works are decorative with function,” she said. Her current exhibition, Ole, on display at Back to Back Galleries in Cooks Hill, is inspired by her trip to Barcelona, where she refined her pottery skills by completing a weeklong intensive course in ceramics and carving porcelain. “I found Barcelona to be a vibrant and energetic city,” Anne said. “The works in the exhibition will convey this feeling of Spain.” To complement Anne’s work, the walls will be hung with Spanishinspired paintings from Pokolbin artist Frances Fussell. Like Anne, Frances also visited Spain, and the two artists, while bonding over their shared experience of the country, decided to exhibit together. Ole opens at Back to Back Galleries today (13 April) with an address from Newcastle university’s Dr John Barnes. The exhibition runs until 30 April.

Instructions:

Trace around your MDF eggs onto the reverse of your favourite printed scrapbooking paper. Glue on with PVA or paper glue, and allow to dry. Add some decorative ribbon and hang anywhere that takes your fancy.

Start by painting the bottom half of your papier maché or paintable eggs in a colour of your choice. Once dry, paint the top half with burnished gold paint, making sure to paint down over the edge of the blue paint. Be as rough or as polished as you like. Arrange in your favourite Easter basket or hide around the garden for the little ones to find.

Consider natives

Danoz Directions JESMOND

Today’s garden designs tend to exclude our Australian natives. This can partly be blamed on modern house design concepts, which seem to encourage a minimalist garden using yuccas, cordylines and flaxes, and rocks, which I find restricts variety and individual taste. Consider planting Australian natives, which can complement modern architecture. Many of the native grasses like Lomandra ‘Little Con’ look great

Photo Spotlight

Easter is the perfect time to unplug the kids from technology and get hands-on with a DIY craft project. Have a go at creating these gorgeous hanging and painted eggs with this project, courtesy of Spotlight.

A bird feeds on a native grevillea

planted as a border in front of the grey foliage IN THE GARDEN of Westringia JUDY SHARPE fruiticosa, which gives a modern, structured look when shaped into balls. Fences always require enhancing with plants. Suitable and quick-growing are lillypillies; my favourite is Cascade. Although my home is modern, I have a row of bird-loving grevilleas planted along my western boundary. It looks effective if you mix and match colours as long as they are of similar height – try Honey Gem, Moonlight, Misty Pink and Sandra Gordon. Planting larger natives such as eucalypts has lost favour because of their size and the havoc they bring during storms. Smallergrowing, grafted gums are great as a feature.

BATEAU BAY

Features & Details

I am a Masterton single storey house, built around 15 years ago on a much loved block that hasn’t been offered for sale in 60 years. I am clean and spacious and in an enviable location – only one block from the gorgeous Shelly Beach and a ten minute walk to Bateau Bay Square. The Bateau Bay Bowling Club is also just a very short walk from my level corner position. I am situated in a quiet leafy neighbourhood, close to schools and you can even hear the waves from here. Families or investors would be happy with the potential to further add value with an additional side entrance that would be perfect for the development of a granny flat with own entry. Call for a private inspection today as you don’t want to miss out on me! • Large yard • Secure parking • Two living areas

• Master bedroom with en-suite • Ample development opportunity • Built-In wardrobes

PICK OF THE WEEK Casper Friday, GO!, 7.30pm, PG (1995) Precocious teen Christina Ricci (The Addams Family) and Bill “Mr Amiable” Pullman (Independence Day) waltz through this FX extravaganza, inspired by the eponymous friendly ghost of cartoon fame. The story is more or less what you’d expect, although the CGI animation is an unexpected treat. In a word, “transparent”, but hey, kids don’t need substance.

Friday

The Legend Of Zorro

Kinky Boots

Saturday, GO!, 7.30pm, PG (2005) Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are back for a second serving of swashbuckling fun. Years on from their first meeting, they are now playing happy families, with young son Joaquin (Adrian Alonso) in tow. California’s citizens are keen to join the US, and on the eve of the ballot which would see that happen, a sinister French count (Rufus Sewell) sweeps into town to do some underhanded politicking. Sounds like a job for Zorro.

Saturday, NBN, 7pm, PG (2005) Here’s a concept: A small-town guy turns a traditional shoe business into an outlet for “erotic” boots – for men. Aussie Joel Edgerton ships off to England to play Charlie, a Northampton boy who inherits the family business. Chiwetel Ejiofor is the cabaret singer-turned-cross-dresser who alerts him to the niche market. A very British, against-the-odds comedy that lacks the flavour of other ground-breaking comedies such as The Full Monty before it. Brings new meaning to being a drag.

ARIES MAR 21 - APR 20

CANCER JUN 22 - JUL 22

LIBRA SEP 24 - OCT 23

CAPRICORN DEC 22 - JAN 20

The next 12 months are going to be rather dynamic as Uranus continues to wind its way through your chart. Your home and family life is going to be busy. If you’re self-employed, be proactive as there are plenty of opportunities and you don't want to miss out on them.

If you need help just ask, as there are plenty of friends around you willing to return all those favours you’ve dished out in the past. You’re going to be feeling pretty sociable so get set for some fun in the next few weeks.

Your ruling planet Venus turns direct on the 16th and some say that love comes when you least expect it, but you usually have a plan of action. Separating the wheat from the chaff is something you do instinctively when it comes to potential suitors.

April is a busy month of commitments and work, you'll start to be more focused and organised in your workplace and your routine. If you have taken control of your professional activities, this won’t be too much of a problem.

TAURUS APR 21 - MAY 21

Venus turns direct on the 16th indicating that some of you may be putting a casual relationship onto a more serious footing. If there have been any rifts between you and a friend, take this opportunity to make a fresh start. You’ll be glad you did.

SCORPIO OCT 24 - NOV 22 The Sun in Aries gives you the stamina to shrug off any minor ailments that have been troubling you. You need to get yourself into shape to handle the challenges ahead. A few early nights, a better diet and a willingness to give up bad habits will work wonders.

With Mercury Retrograde, you may find it hard to reach any kind of objective at work. Colleagues could let you down and those on whom you can usually depend upon to get their job done efficiently could be uncooperative or off sick just when you need them most.

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 - DEC 21

PISCES FEB 20 - MAR 20

Your ruling planet Jupiter is on a Retrograde path. Whilst you may not feel like it, you need to look into your financial situation and work out a sensible budget for the future. So get out those bank and credit card statements and be honest with yourself.

Mercury is Retrograde and although you are supposed to be incredibly patient, it doesn’t mean that you are immune to stress. You will be busy playing peacemaker but you won’t be able to keep this act up for long, as an explosion of volcanic proportions may occur.

Mars is in your sign and the pace of life seems very fast, as though there’s too much to do and not enough people doing it. For householders, domestic chores and routine appointments are going to be taking up every spare minute of your time.

GEMINI MAY 22 - JUN 21 Your phone could be red hot as friends and relatives who live far away are keen to get in touch. It’s a pity you haven’t got as much time as you’d like to catch up on the gossip. Don’t let so much time pass before you speak to them again.

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

VIRGO AUG 24 - SEP 23 Venus turns direct on the 16th and an unexpected invitation could surprise you. If you’re single, you’ve probably been wondering when you’re going to meet someone special. While you might not meet the love of your life on your first date, at least your flirtation skills are getting a workout.
