This week...
From the editor A hearty welcome back to the Newcastle Weekly and welcome to 2017. I trust everyone had a happy and safe holiday season. I had a great Christmas – a strippedback affair with just my wife, my son and my loveable Staffy and enough food for about 20 people. Honestly, I think I'll be eating leg ham sandwiches until March. New Year's Eve was also a relatively quiet affair, taking in the fireworks at Honeysuckle. It was great to see so many families lining the foreshore to watch the spectacle. Looking ahead to 2017 and what a year our region has in store for us. Just a quick look at the calendar shows Bruce Springsteen rocking the vineyards again in February, as well as what promises to be another mammoth Surfest. The nautical splendour of the Lake Mac Heritage Festival and Maitland Steamfest's 30th birthday in April are sure to be ‘must-dos’, as is Nelson Bay's delectable Tastes at the Bay Festival in November. Also, while I'm not the biggest fan of motor racing, the Newcastle 500, also in November, has piqued my interest. This meagre list barely even scratches the surface of what’s in store this year so make sure you continue to grab your copy of the Weekly, every week, to find out what’s happening in your area.

Hunter Stroke Research Volunteer Register participant Noel Johnson with the register’s coordinator Gillian Mason.
Beacon of hope for stroke survivors Hunter stroke survivors now have the chance to participate in cuttingedge research through a volunteer register for clinical trials. Each year, 1700 people suffer a stroke in the Hunter region – more than a third of whom are left
12
physically impaired. Despite this, researchers struggle to recruit participants in prevention and rehabilitation studies. That’s where the Hunter Stroke Research Volunteer Register comes in.
Run by the Hunter Medical Research Institute and operating within John Hunter Hospital’s acute stroke ward and Stroke/TIA Clinic; Rankin Park Rehabilitation Centre; and Hunter New England Health’s Community Stroke Team, the volunteer register aims to link stroke survivors with suitable studies. Coordinator Gillian Mason said it would save researchers time and money. “Recruitment for different trials, especially involving stroke recovery, has been somewhat disjointed because it largely depends on individual relationships with the hospital system,” she said. “It results in researchers spending many months recruiting for their study, and the trial sample might not be fully representative.” For stroke survivors like Kotara South’s Noel Johnson, who was
among the first to sign up to the register, it’s a chance to make a difference. Before he suffered a stroke 10 years ago, at age 54, Noel was happily self-employed and heavily involved in his local sporting community as the sales manager for the Newcastle Knights and Jets. In an instant, this was all taken away from him. He lost sight in his right eye and could no longer drive. “That’s a big thing – feeling worthless after stroke,” he said. “There’s so much you can’t do anymore, so to find something you can do is really of great benefit.” Clinical trials are already under way in physical fitness, fatigue, and degenerative decline after stroke. Visit hmri.org.au/participateresearch or phone Gillian Mason on 4042 0093 for more information. - Georgia Osland

It’s been an unsavory start to the new year for two demolition contractors, who have been fined $12,000 each for illegally dumping waste. The Hunter-Central Coast Regional Illegal Dumping Squad investigated two separate incidents in Loxton and Sandgate. Several tonnes of waste, including asbestos fragments, were found at both sites. It was later discovered the two incidents were connected; the material being from a house demolition in Charlestown in October. The culprits were found and promptly penalised. Report illegal dumping at ridonline.epa.nsw.gov.au or phone 131 555.

news Newcastle icon reopens
Swimmers delight in the Bogey Hole’s grand reopening to the public.
NW0445
For the first time in more than a year, there are sounds of people splashing and laughing coming from the Bogey Hole in Newcastle. The iconic natural watering hole reopened in December, just in time for summer, after closing in November 2015 due to the threat of rock falls. Since then, the state
government has undertaken work to stabilise the surrounding cliffs in stage one of a $491,000 rehabilitation project. A series of 15 rock bolts and a length of “rock catch” fencing were installed to lessen the risk of rocks falling on swimmers from above. Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp said the Bogey Hole’s reopening was a great victory for the people of Newcastle, given that Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald, had previously alluded the iconic attraction might stay closed permanently. “It is a great outcome; I’m glad it’s open for summer,” Mr Crakanthorp said. “I just wish [the government] had done it sooner.”

at Foreshore Park, Newcastle, bequeathed leftover funds from the sculpture’s creation in 2015 to Lifeline, which will use the money for its telephone crisis support, counselling, training, and community programs. The organiser behind the sculpture, Joanne Sinclair, and the mastermind who created it, Newcastle-based sculptor Roger McFarlane, presented the surplus funds just before Christmas. “We thought: who better to give the funds to than a local organisation helping to build resilience and prevent suicide in our community,” Ms Sinclair said. Given that it has served its purpose, the association has now folded, but its legacy lives on. If you or someone you know needs help, phone Lifeline on 13 11 14. -Georgia Osland

Mothers ditch the cigarettes The number of women who smoke during pregnancy is in decline across the state. Data compiled for the latest NSW Mothers and Babies report, commissioned by NSW Health, shows that, during 2015, 8.9% of expectant mothers smoked – down from 11.1% in 2011. Of those who smoked while pregnant during 2015, 27.1% stopped smoking in the first half of pregnancy. Over the five-year period to 2015, there was a trend toward smoking fewer cigarettes a day among those who continued to smoke during the second half of pregnancy.

Driver fatalities spike The number of driver fatalities on Hunter roads almost doubled from 2015 to 2016. Transport for NSW data shows 30 drivers lost their lives last year, up from 17 in 2015. Overall, there were 52 road fatalities in the Hunter region last year, compared to 42 the year before. This represents 13.5% of the statewide road toll, which climbed to 384 in 2016 – 36 more deaths than in 2015. In the Hunter, speed-related fatalities rose by 39% in 2016. Excessive or inappropriate speed was a factor in almost half (48%) of all fatalities. Fatigue was a factor in 31% of fatalities, while alcohol was the culprit behind the loss of at least 12 lives.
New approach to road safety NSW Centre for Road Safety executive director Bernard Carlon said the increase in fatalities yearon-year was a tragedy. “No loss of life is acceptable and we are investing heavily in road safety programs to drive the road toll towards zero,” he said. “We need the help of all road users in the Hunter to take personal responsibility and make safe choices on and around our roads.” - Georgia Osland
Imagine a world where, instead of incurring demerit points for a low-level driving offence, you brushed up on the basics of road safety instead. That’s precisely the idea the NSW Labor Party has put forward to the Baird government. With the state road toll rising 10% year-on-year from 2015 to 2016, Labor is calling on the government to consider new measures to deter risky driving. In lieu of demerit point penalty,
drivers would have the option to undertake the retraining program. They would still be made to pay their fine, and this, Labor envisions, would fund the course. If a motorist chose not to undertake the course, they would still pay the fine and lose demerit points. The retraining program would only be available to a motorist once every three years to deter repeat offenders.

sport Racing identities lauded
Newcastle Jockey Club chief executive officer Matt Benson in the club’s history room.
The region’s most prestigious horse racing identities, both past and present, will be immortalised in the inaugural Newcastle and Hunter Racing Hall of Fame. Launched on Saturday at Newcastle Jockey Club’s first race meeting of 2017, the Hall of Fame aims to recognise horses and humans alike who have made a significant contribution to and helped shape thoroughbred racing in the Hunter over the past 115 years.
Nominations are now open, with the eight inaugural inductees to be welcomed into the Hall of Fame at a gala event planned for early March. New inductees will be honoured every alternate year on an ongoing basis. All inductees receive a plaque in the soon-tobe-designed Hall of Fame Garden at the club. The Hall of Fame is the brainchild of industry stalwart Gary Harley, who remains a driving force behind the concept and its realisation. Mr Harley will join Brian Judd, Greg Radley and Ray Thomas on the judging panel. Newcastle Jockey Club chief executive officer Matt Benson said it was an exciting initiative for Newcastle and the Hunter. “We have so many participants that have significantly impacted both the local and national racing scene and it’s time they were recognised for their efforts,” Mr Benson said. Nominations are open until 31 January across four categories, including horses, trainers, jockeys and associates, with specific eligibility criteria for each. Go to newcastlehunterhof.com.au
Goals from Andrew Hoole, Andrew Nabbout and Morten Nordstrand saw the Newcastle Jets secure a stunning 3-2 victory over Brisbane Roar at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday. It wasn’t looking good for Newcastle, after Roar striker Thomas Oar scored in the 15th minute, however, Andrew Hoole levelled the score-line, in added time during the first half. Newcastle upped the ante in the second half, with constant pressure on the Brisbane backline. That pressure paid off in the 72nd minute courtesy of a stunning header from Andrew Nabbout. Jets skipper Nigel Boogaard brought Roar defender Jack Hingert down in the area in the 81st minute, which led to a penalty for the hosts – Jamie Maclaren restoring parity to the contest with eight minutes remaining. The Jets weren’t to be denied, with Danish marksman Morten Nordstrand sealing victory in the 84th minute. The Jets face Perth Glory at home on Sunday 15 January.

MAROBA CARING COMMUNITIES
INGENIA LIFESTYLE Ingenia Lifestyle’s over 55s communities are some of the newest living trends available to the downsizing market, allowing residents to own a home but lease the land. This eliminates stamp duty fees, ensuring an affordable entry price, and residents free up a substantial amount of equity raised in the sale of their previous home. With a high level of demand for quality, age-appropriate communities in the Newcastle region, you can find a brand new home in the Hunter Valley from $249,000, Chain Valley Bay from $299,000 and on the mid-north coast in South West Rocks from $239,000. Maroba offers a number of options, whether you’re looking for independent living, you need some day-to-day help, or you need specialised care. Maroba is fully accredited with highly skilled employees to care for your every need. There are activities to help to foster the sense of community that is so important to the wellbeing of residents. CENTRAL VILLAGE Over 55’s are making the move to downsize their home while improving their lifestyle at Central Village Mayfield. When people see the stone bench tops, bamboo flooring, Smeg appliances and the light-filled living areas they realise a move to Central Village is a move to improve their lifestyle. Ken and Glennis Isles, who moved in on 1 September, say moving from a large house with a pool to the quality homes at Central Village is the best thing they have done. They were able to free up equity in their home, buy a new car and are now just relaxing and enjoying life. W: centralvillagenewcastle.com.au

SUMMER FRUIT FREEZIES
Don’t let the heat sap the life out of your summer fruits. Get creative and blend them together to make some Pinterest-pretty popsicles. Alternatively you can use any fruits you like. Just mix them in with a coconut milk, yogurt or water base, freeze and enjoy!
Watermelon iceblocks Recipe courtesy of Coles, see more at: taste.com.au 1/2 cup (125ml) coconut cream 1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste 2 tsp caster sugar 1/3 cup (75g) caster sugar, extra 2 sprigs mint 400g watermelon, coarsely chopped, seeds removed
Place coconut cream, vanilla and sugar in a small bowl. Stir to combine. Combine extra sugar, mint and 3/4 cup (185ml) water in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook, stirring, for 5 mins or until sugar dissolves. Increase heat to medium and bring to a simmer. Cook for 2-3 mins or until syrup thickens slightly. Set aside for 15 mins to cool. Remove and discard mint. Reserve 2 tablespoons of the syrup. Process the remaining syrup and watermelon in a food processor until smooth. Strain mixture through
3 kiwi fruit, peeled, coarsely chopped
a fine sieve into a jug. Pour evenly among ten 1/3-cup (80ml) iceblock moulds. Insert iceblock sticks. Place in the freezer for 2 hours or until firm. Pour coconut cream mixture evenly over the watermelon mixture. Return to the freezer for 1 hour or until firm. Process the reserved syrup and kiwifruit in a food processor until smooth. Pour over the coconut cream mixture. Place in the freezer for 3 hours or until firm.

A CRAIC-ING
GOOD TIME Fresh from the Emerald Isle, traditional Irish four-piece Four Winds are currently enjoying a mammoth summer tour of Australia, and will be bringing the craic to Newcastle next week. The outfit – Daoiri Farrell (bouzouki), Caroline Keane (concertina), Tom Delany (uilleann pipes) and Robbie Walsh (bodhran) – has been in the country since December, playing stand-out shows at the Woodford Folk Festival in Queensland and the Cygnet Folk Festival in Tasmania. “We’ve been having the most amazing time,” Caroline Keane told Newcastle Weekly. “When we played at Woodford, for example and, by the end of
the set there wasn’t one person not dancing.” Deeply rooted in the traditions of Irish musical culture, Four Winds produce a vibrant landscape of music and lyrics that present Irish music in a modern context. Having only formed in 2013, the band has packed quite a bit in, with tours of the UK, North America and Australia, a debut album in 2015, and the prestigious Danny Kyle Award from the Celtic Connections festival in Glasgow. While the band may only be in its relative infancy, its members have shared stages with such renowned musicians as Paddy Keenan, The Chieftains, Tommy O’Sullivan, De Temps Antan,
FullSet, Muireann NicAmhlaoibh, Karen Tweed and more. There’s no denying that Irish culture has found a place in almost all corners of the globe. So, just what is it about the songs, and sights of Eire that resonate so well? “A lot of it is the diaspora – us Irish went everywhere,” Caroline laughed.
WHAT’S ON @ THE BOWLO Pelican
“Also, Irish music is well and truly dance music – it’s about getting off the seat and having a great time and I think everyone wants to have a good time, whether you come from Ireland or Sydney.” Catch Four Winds at The Unorthodox Church of Groove on Friday 20 January. trybooking.com/NYPE

Getting into the
swing of things To some, the 1950s is little more than a bygone era, but to many – especially those who lived during that time – the fifties still conjures up nostalgic memories of rock ‘n’ roll music and wide swing skirts. That holds true for husband and wife Gary and Kerry Haigh, who own 1950s rock ‘n’ roll dance studio All Shook Up. “[The fifties were] a lovely time,” Kerry said. “After the wartime, things brightened up; there was more money around for people to enjoy themselves and the music changed.” Kerry and her husband teach traditional four-step rock ‘n’ roll dance twice a week in Newcastle and Maitland. Gary is the only level-three rock ‘n’ roll dance teacher in the Hunter Valley with accreditation from the Australian Rock ‘n’ Roll Dancesport Council.
Established 11 years ago, the studio offers beginners and intermediate classes at Telarah Bowling Club on Wednesday evenings and Mayfield Bowling Club on Thursday evenings. The classes run as part of a five-week course, which starts afresh after the last course finishes. The studio has about 70 regular members. Some come for friendship, others come to learn a new skill, but they all have one thing in common: they’re there to have fun. And not only do they get into the swing of things with old-time music and dress; four years ago, the studio established its own classic car club, and many members participate in local car shows. Their biggest event of the year is the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival. For more information, phone the dance studio or visit their Facebook page.

KEV CARMODY AT LIZOTTE’S Hot on the heels of his four-CD anthology Recollections…Reflections… (A Journey), Kev Carmody, arguably one of Australia’s pre-eminent singer-songwriters, will be coming to Lizotte’s for a very special and intimate show. The latest album – Kev’s first new release in more than 12 years – is a collection of stories, written and collected over 40 years, politically charged and driven by the history of his peoples’ struggles and set on the land he loves. Many of the instruments on the album were furnished from objects found around the old fruitpacking shed that was used as a studio. Wooden logs, butter knives, bicycle pumps, chickens, and his beloved grandchildren all make an appearance alongside an array of more traditional instruments in this exciting and eclectic collection. Catch Kev Carmody at Lizotte’s Lambton on Tuesday 24 January.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE The Royal Exchange Theatre will play host to a thrilling night of entertainment when Varietyville comes to town this week. This special show is a beguiling fusion of the most unique, ridiculous and bizarre variety acts you’re ever likely to see. The brainchild of Daniel Oldaker (Dandyman), Varietyville brings together the world’s most inimitable acts including international circus variety star Rani Huszar (aka Ruby Rubberlegs) and New York variety/ comedy superstar Tanya Marie Gagne (hula hoopist and absurdist performance artist). Audiences can expect bite-sized morsels of masterful magic, chaotic clowning, preposterous physical feats, musical mayhem, hilarious hijinks and more. Catch Varietyville at the Royal Exchange Theatre on Friday 13 January.
tracks ranging from rock ballads, boot stomping roots rock, southern grunge and more. The band enlisted the likes of Izzy Osmanovic from The Screaming Jets who played on track, Travelling Song, Justin Ngariki, who co-wrote Intuition, La-Dean Lamafia, who added soulful Gospel on the track Brother Is, and Eddie Ryan, who laid down some tasty sax on Time for Living. Cornstalk first made their mark in the Australian independent music scene, from their very first show in Newcastle supporting The Beautiful Girls. They then debuted their self-titled EP that gained its own recognition. In 2013, Cornstalk was nominated for three MUSICOZ awards at the Australian Independent Music Awards (AIMAS). Catch Cornstalk, with support from Kenny Jewell and The Ride Ons, at the Cambridge Hotel on Saturday 21 January.

Top spot for home buyers HAMILTON 6 DEVON STREET With Hamilton continuing to prove popular among home buyers, there appears to be another major factor influencing buyers: transport. With Hamilton Train Station now being the ‘end of the line’ for the heavy rail, regular commuters prefer to live within walking distance
to the station, rather than other areas around Newcastle with fewer transport options. This fabulous four-bedroom home is only a short walk to the train station and one block away from Beaumont Street. It is recently refurbished.

McGrath Charlestown Principal Agent Anthony Di Nardo said stunning acreage homes along the picturesque Burwood Road easily fetched prices upwards of $2 million. $430,100, making the suburb appealing to a broad spectrum of buyers, Mr Di Nardo said. Whitebridge is also buzzing with development, with the Fettlers Whitebridge project on Dudley Road well under way. When finished, it will comprise of three and fourbedroom Strata Titled and Torrens Titled homes, along with one to two-bedroom apartments. Close to shops, schools and natural attractions such as the Fernleigh Track and Glenrock State Conservation Area, Whitebridge appeals to many, Mr Di Nardo says. “With continuing growth and investment in the Greater Newcastle Region from projects such as the V8 supercars, University of Newcastle NeW Space and Light Rail in the CBD, I can only predict continuing growth in Whitebridge,” he said.

PICK OF THE WEEK Superman II Saturday, GO!, 7.45pm, PG (1980) An improvement on the original, number two sees the Man of Steel (Christopher Reeve, left) locked in an impressive battle with three renegade Kryptonians (Terence Stamp, Sarah Douglas and Jack O’Halloran) intent on ruling Earth. As he courts Lois Lane (Margot Kidder) and thwarts the evil plans of Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman), Reeve looks more comfortable in his red exterior jocks, even offering some tonguein-cheek lines to the mix of good-versus-evil sloganeering. Superb entertainment.

Monday, NBN, 8.30pm, M (2007) Anthony Hopkins returned to his sneering, teeth-baring best in this cracking courtroom thriller. The Silence of the Lambs star plays Ted Crawford, an ageing tycoon who concocts a scheme to get away with murdering his young wife (Embeth Davidtz). But he’s reckoned without cocky attorney Willie Beachum (Ryan Gosling, right), a man who needs to wrap up the case quickly so that he can start his new cushy corporate job. So begins a slick game of cat-and-mouse between the lawyer and the canny killer.
Sunday, TEN, 8.30pm, M (2008) Unlikely action hero Liam Neeson (left) channels his inner John McClane in this solid revenge thriller penned by prolific filmmaker Luc Besson. Against his better judgment, a retired CIA operative (Neeson) lets his teenage daughter (Maggie Grace) travel from Los Angeles to France with her girlfriends. But when she’s snatched into the slave trade, the frantic father must save her. Director Pierre Morel reinvents the overused “parent rescuing abducted child” scenario, resulting in an intense flick that zips along at breakneck pace.

Feisty Pets Giveaway If you have a pet you know how quickly the cute can turn crazy. Feisty Pets are a new line of plush animals with “stuffed attitude”. Each pet changes their expression from cute to ‘feisty’ when you gently squeeze them behind the ear. They’re great to cuddle and play with, but also perfect for a hilarious and innocent prank on friends and family. No batteries or extras are necessary. There are six loveable and different Feisty Pets to collect for all ages – Sammy Suckerpunch (Wolf), Princess Potty Mouth (Kitty), Grand Master Funk (Monkey), Sir Growlsalot (Bear), Lady Monstertruct (Cat), and Karl The Snarl (Polar Bear).
Newcastle Weekly has three Feisty Pets (RRP $24.99) to give away. To enter, email competitions@newcastleweekly. com.au with Feisty Pets in the subject line. Tell us your name, full contact details and one of the Feisty Pets’ names. Entries close and winners drawn at 9am on Friday 20 January. One entry per person. Permit No. LTPM-1600488.
