Newcastle Weekly contents

thursday 01 december 2016

14 The precocious ‘80s celluloid teenager Ferris Bueller once said “life moves pretty fast, if you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” This statement was never truer when, this week, I realised that we are now at the beginning of December and staring down the barrel of 2017. Where did the time go? While I’m never one for New Year's resolutions, perhaps, this year, I might pledge to take some time out, every now and then, to heed Bueller’s advice by taking the blinkers off and looking around once in a while. Still on the subject of ‘where did the time go’, this week, my son completed an important chapter in his life – junior high school. While he is getting more and more excited about the prospect of senior school, his mother and I are left convinced that it was only yesterday that we were enrolling him in Kindergarten Time really does fly. Well, the Newcastle Weekly giving tree appeal is in full swing and we have been amazed with the amount of presents that have been dropped off over the past week. This year, we’ll be donating gifts to the Salvation Army so, make sure you drop your unwrapped Christmas presents, for both boys and girls, to our office, between 9am and 5pm, at 19 Pearson Street, Charlestown, before Friday 16 December. Let’s help make Christmas a little brighter for the less fortunate. Have a great week. - Stephen Bisset

Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp at Newcastle High School.

Invest in our schools: Crakanthorp Exorbitant maintenance backlogs are crippling Newcastle’s schools and jeopardising students’ education, Member for Newcastle Tim Crakanthorp argues.

The top five most run-down secondary schools in Newcastle have a combined backlog of more than $4.4 million. They are: Newcastle High

School ($1,078,979); Hunter School of Performing Arts ($1,065,482); Callaghan College Waratah Campus ($969,567); Lambton High School ($675,864); and Merewether High School ($612,180). The backlogs are for maintenance and general repair works to the schools’ structures and teaching facilities. Newcastle High and Hunter School of Performing Arts were both built in the 1920s, while Lambton High and Merewether High were built in the 1970s. Callaghan College is the only school on the list still in its infancy, having opened in 2005. Mr Crakanthorp said he believed Newcastle High, being the oldest school on the list, had sat at the top for quite some time. “Its [backlog] has been consistently high,” he said. Mr Crakanthorp said the government’s preoccupation with having a surplus had left students

with a second-rate learning environment. “The government talks about having large surpluses, but they’ve sold just about everything the state owns – our hospitals, the Port [of Newcastle] – that’s why they’ve got the money,” he said. “Surely the education of the next generation is worth spending some of the surplus on?” Across New South Wales, the total school maintenance backlog increased by $43 million over the 2015/16 financial year – from $732 million to $775 million. Mr Crakanthorp said the Rudd government had made large investments in education, but recent cuts to the sector had dried up funds. As a father of four, Mr Crakanthorp is concerned. “It is disappointing that this government is letting our children down in the very important area of education.” -Georgia Osland

news New ADVOs applauded

Safe house to open in Raymond Terrace Women’s crisis accommodation in Port Stephens has been bolstered with the imminent opening of a new safe house. Port Stephens Local Area Commander and domestic violence spokesperson for the Northern Region, Superintendent Chris Craner, said he anticipated the two-bedroom apartment in Raymond Terrace would be finished within the next week. With the help of community organisations and local businesses, the NSW Police Force has been working to renovate the council-owned building to provide temporary accommodation for women and children fleeing domestic violence.

New, Plain English Apprehended Domestic Violence Orders, which are being rolled out state-wide on Saturday 3 December have been welcomed by Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald. “These new ADVOs use clear and simple language so there is no excuse for a domestic violence perpetrator to breach an order,” he said. “We have removed all the complex legal jargon and spelled out a defendant’s obligations in plain english, so they can no longer claim they didn’t understand the meaning or consequences of the ADVO.” In addition, the penalties for breaching an order, including up to two years in prison, have been moved to the top of the document making them the first things perpetrators see. Further, the state government’s recent changes to ADVOs means final applications can be determined even if the victim doesn’t come to court. They will also protect a victim’s current partner if they are being harassed by the victim’s ex-partner, and will stop self-represented defendants from personally cross-examining child witnesses during ADVO applications.

It could house a single woman and her children, or a number of women and children at a time, depending on the circumstances. Superintendent Craner, whose role it is to oversee domestic violence prevention and intervention from the Hawkesbury River to the New South WalesQueensland border, said, eventually, he would like to see domestic violence perpetrators spend the night there, instead of victims.

Telstra says goodbye to 2G

“What kind of message does it send when the kids see dad hitting mum and instead of dad ending up at the police station, they wind up spending the night here?” - Georgia Osland

Telstra will switch off its 2G network from today (1 December), potentially leaving people unable to make or receive calls. The changeover won’t just impact on older 2G phones, but could also affect users of medi-alerts, alarms and other critical devices that rely on the 2G network. It is estimated that there are still 250,000 2G Users across the country, but this shutdown will only affect Telstra customers with Optus shutting down its 2G network in April next year with Vodophone following suit in September.

news St Pius X High School students participate in the Physical Activity for Everyone program. Photo courtesy of Hunter New England Health

Let’s get physical A school-based physical activity program to tackle childhood obesity, successfully piloted in the Hunter, is set to be rolled out across four local health districts in New South Wales.

Hunter New England Health’s Physical Activity for Everyone program was trialled over two years at five high schools: St Pius X High; Kotara High; Morisset High; Berkley Vale High; and Great Lakes College, Forster.

The results, published this year, showed the program not only slowed the decline in physical activity in adolescents, it reversed it. Post-program evaluation found that students exercised for seven minutes longer each day and gained 2% less weight than before. Program manager Rachel Sutherland, who conducted the program for her PhD studies in collaboration with Professor John Wiggers, said physical activity declined in high school students at a rate of 7% per year, from year 7 onwards. Further, when researchers observed the amount of time students spent actually exercising during sports and PE lessons, they found only about 30% of that time was spent engaging in moderate to heavy activity, with the remainder being sedentary or light activity.

“We worked with PE teachers to maximise sports in that time,” Mrs Sutherland said. The program’s success earnt it a trifecta of NSW Public Health Awards this year – a Hunter New England Health excellence award, the 2016 NSW Health Award for preventative health, and the 2016 NSW Premier’s Award for tackling childhood obesity. Now, the program is expanding to cover 76 schools across the Hunter, Central Coast, Mid North Coast and South Western Sydney health districts. Mrs Sutherland said the program was the first of its kind to be implemented on such a large scale, and could go a long way toward achieving the Premier’s Priority target of a 5% reduction in childhood obesity. - Georgia Osland

news Hillsborough Public School students get active for Jump Rope for Heart.

You say jump, they say how high They may be small, but Hillsborough Public School students have proven they are mighty, raising $6,837 toward the Heart Foundation’s annual Jump Rope for Heart fundraising campaign. Three hundred students skipped their hearts out in what is the largest and most-recognised fundraising and physical activity program for young people. With one in four Australian children overweight or obese, the program teaches students, families and the school community on the importance of keeping their hearts healthy through regular exercise and balanced nutrition. The Charlestown school has participated in the program for six years, raising more than $14,000 in total. All proceeds go to the Heart Foundation to help fight heart disease.

Street-safe program boost Newcastle council will treble its financial support for a volunteer-run program that assists vulnerable and intoxicated people get home, while preserving peace on the streets. Street Safe Salvos – a Saturday night program run by the Salvation Army’s Oasis Youth Network, in conjunction with council and NSW Police will see its financial support from council treble from $10,000 to $30,000. The announcement came after crime data, supplied by NSW Police revealed a 6.7% reduction in alcohol-related street offences and a 28.7% decrease in alcohol related crime during the pilot program from November to July, when compared to the same period in the previous year. “The statistics, although not restricted to Saturday nights, suggest that the Street Safe Salvos pilot program is having a very positive effect,” Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes said.

Critters vex Hunter drivers Drivers in the Hunter Valley are 15 times more likely to collide with an animal than drivers in Sydney according to AAMI. The latest AAMI Crash Index – an analysis of nationwide insurance claims revealed that, over a 12-month period, 8.09% of accidents in Newcastle and the Hunter were the result of animal collision compared with 0.54% in Sydney. The index revealed the most common types of crashes in the region were: nose to tail (30.95%); collision with stationary object (25.81%); failed to give way (21.62%); collision while reversing (12.08%); and hit an animal (8.09%).

You might have noticed that Lake Macquarie is looking a little fresher and cleaner lately. That’s because, throughout October, a dedicated army of more than 650 volunteers swept the city to complete 28 ‘renovation rescues’. Coordinated by volunteer organisation CityServe – a collaboration between interdenominational church groups across the region – the annual clean-up initiative takes to the streets of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie to perform maintenance and repair works on community

and public assets. This year, projects across Lake Macquarie ranged from painting and paving to deck-building and backyard blitzing. Beneficiaries included sports clubs, community groups, schools and early childhood centres. Charlestown’s C3 Church Victory received an outstanding achievement award for undertaking five community projects. Lake Macquarie Mayor Kay Fraser said the initiative generated goodwill and pride in local communities.

Salt Ash teen Philadelphia Coleman is a natural-born leader.

Teen takes the lead Philadelphia Coleman is an ordinary teen with an extraordinary story. At 18 years old, she has proven that, no matter your past, you have the power to change the future. As a young girl, Philadelphia was exposed to years of violence and abuse in the family home, but that hasn’t stopped her from achieving her dreams. Like a phoenix from the ashes, Philadelphia has risen above her struggles to become a true leader in her community. In her spare time, the diligent Medowie Christian School student volunteers for several

Award for crime prevention project A Newcastle City Local Area Command crime reduction project was recognised at the annual Australian Crime and Violence Prevention Awards, held in Parliament House last week. Member for Newcastle Sharon Claydon congratulated the team from Restoring Hamilton South for winning the silver award for their efforts in reducing crime rates in the Hamilton South area. “The team won this prestigious award for the excellent outcomes they achieved in partnership with the Hamilton South housing estate community which saw local crime rates drop by as much as 15 per cent,” Ms Claydon said. “Not only has crime reduced, but the project is also helping to address other issues facing the community like mental health, substance abuse and family problems. “This is an incredible achievement and a great model of strategic coordination and effective community engagement.”

community organisations, including the Rural Fire Service, Port Stephens Youth Advisory Panel, Rotary, Birubi Beach Surf Life Saving Club, and the Australian Air Force Cadets. Philadelphia’s selflessness and leadership was recognised, this month, when she won the Country to Canberra Leadership Competition. The Salt Ash teen and 11 other young women from rural Australian communities went on a four-day ‘Power Trip’ to Canberra, where they visited Parliament House and met politicians and other influential people. Each winner was chosen based on their essay entry, in which they outlined what gender equality meant to them. Philadelphia talked about her experience with family violence, and her goal, to one day, become a helicopter pilot with the Royal Australian Air Force – a role that has not always provided equal opportunity for women. “I just want to empower women and girls to reach their full potential and break gender barriers,” she said. Philadelphia and the other young women were each provided with a mentor to continue building their leadership skills. - Georgia Osland

Brothers Les and Kevin Smith proudly wear their Anne Clark B.E.M Service Award lapels. Photo: Peter Stoop

A family affair Few families have made as big a contribution to netball in the Hunter, and indeed Australia, as the Smiths. Marks Point’s Les Smith became the third in his family, earlier this

month, to be awarded the Anne Clark B.E.M Service Award – the highest honour bestowed by Netball NSW – in recognition of more than 54 consecutive years of service to the sport.

His brother, Kevin, received the award in 2009, and their late mother, Molly Smith, received it in 1979. With a mother as dedicated to netball as Molly, it’s no wonder the boys followed in her footsteps. Molly founded Lakeside Netball Association in 1962. Many will know the netball courts at Belmont are named after Molly, who gave her life to the sport and the association – with her husband Gordon’s support – before she died in 2000. Kevin and Les were more heavily involved in coaching and umpiring than Molly, cutting their teeth in the world of netball – or women’s basketball, as it was then known – at the ages of 16 and 18. In 1979, they fought and won a discrimination case to become the first badged male netball umpires in Australia. Kevin and Les gained their A-grade badges in 1981 and 1982

respectively (Kevin was the first male in Australia to do so). They were involved with the Lakeside association until 1984, when Kevin joined Newcastle Netball Association. Les followed a year later after a short stint with Westlakes Netball Association. The pair sat on the executive board, as they had at Lakeside, and coached many a team and umpire fledgling. Kevin and Les umpired at state championships, with Kevin eventually attaining his All Australian Umpire Badge (international level). Even today, the pair are still involved with Charlestown Netball Association, and it was president Dianne Pascoe who nominated Les for the Anne Clark award. “I think if mum were here she’d be so pleased,” Kevin said. -Georgia Osland

Newcastle Roller Derby League players skate out for last year’s end-of-year ‘Purple Reign’ bout.

Roll up for final bout

Suicide rates are at a 10 year high and the number of suicides each year is double the national road toll.

Newcastle Roller Derby League is gearing up for its final home bout of the season. Hot on the heels of NRDL’s end-of-year ‘Purple Reign’ bout against the South Side Derby Dolls in Menai, Newcastle’s two home teams – the Purple Cobras and the Average Joes – will go headto-head at the Hall of Industry building next to Newcastle Entertainment Centre this Saturday 3 December. One way Lifeline is tackling our community’s suicide emergency is by providing local people and workplaces with training. LivingWorks safeTALK (1/2 day) alerts community members to signs that a person may be considering suicide and gives links to further suicide first aid help. LivingWorks Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training – ASIST (2-day) shows people how to recognise when someone may be at risk of suicide and how to respond to increase immediate safety and link the person to help. Most suicide can be prevented and suicide prevention is everyone’s business. Despite some threatening play from Newcastle, in the end it was two goals, in just three minutes from New Zealand international Marco Rojas, that sealed Melbourne Victory’s win at AAMI Park on Saturday. Newcastle came out firing with debutante Andy Brennan sending a shot wide in the fourth minute of play and winger Andrew Hoole was unlucky to see his free kick, 10 minutes before half-time, punched away from danger. Newcastle will be looking for a reversal of fortune when they take on Sydney FC at McDonald Jones Stadium on Sunday 4 December. After eight games in the 2016/17 A-League season, Newcastle sits on equal-eighth with Wellington Phoenix.

Sophie Stokes with her new cookbook In Sofia’s Kitchen. Photo: Peter Stoop.

FROM SOPHIE WITH LOVE For Fern Bay mother of three, food blogger, talented cook and author Sophie Stokes, the culinary flavours of her Greek heritage still conjure feelings of family, togetherness and simple home-style cooking. To that end, Sophie, whose pen name is Sofia, has just released her first cookbook – In Sofia’s Kitchen: Mediterranean Flavours Down Under and she told Newcastle Weekly that the book was the culmination of a life sampling the best dishes the Mediterranean had to offer. “I’m from a Greek family so I’ve grown up eating Mediterranean food and, when I had a family, I started cooking those same dishes for them, too. Some of these recipes I’ve been making for 30 years,” she said. Sophie added that she had been perfecting her culinary craft ever since she was a precocious seven-year-old in her mother’s kitchen. “Like all good Greek families, my parents ran

a shop, so my mother was often too busy to teach me how to cook,” she said. “So, I basically took it upon myself, when I was about seven, to teach myself how to bake and I’ve been in love with cooking ever since.” While she said all the recipes in the book were on high rotation on the family dinner table, Sophie added that there were a few particular standouts like spinach and feta triangles, lentil soup, baklava and Greek custard pie. “There’s something in there for everyone and while there are a lot of traditional recipes in the book, I’ve put my own unique spin on all of them.” While Sophie is no greenhorn in the kitchen, she said that when it came to putting these recipes

on paper, she ran into some unexpected problems. “If you know anything about Greek cooks – it’s more about feeling than it is about exact measurements – a pinch of this here and a dash of that there. We love cooking with the heart, so it was quite a challenge to get all of the correct ratios and everything, but I think I got there in the end.” In Sofia’s Kitchen: Mediterranean Flavours Down Under (RRP $39.95) is out now via Exousia Publishing – www.exousiapublishing.com.au

BOYD’S BEACH SAFE MESSAGE

Boyd Conrick is preaching a beach-safe message with his new children’s book.

Former champion surf lifesaver, champion triathlete and proud Novocastrian Boyd Conrick has written a delightful children’s book about getting kids beach safe this summer. books that taught beach safety for children that inspired the book. “After I had kids, I started reading a lot of kids’ books and there wasn’t a lot out there that spoke about beach education,” he said. “It’s all about two little characters who are out performing their patrols and we get to see how they cope in various situations, in a bright and engaging way.”

“There are a lot of drownings on the East Coast of Australia and I’ve often wondered that if these lessons are taught early enough, if we would perhaps see a reduction in the number of adult drownings.”

Boyd added that he hoped the book, which is officially sanctioned by Surf Lifesaving Australia, would be the first in a series.

Suitable for children aged 3-8 years, At The Beach with Lizzie and Luke engages children in the fun of being at the beach but also has a serious message about staying safe, as a child almost drowns because he didn’t swim between the flags. Lizzie and Luke race to his rescue and, once he is safely on dry land, they put a brace around his neck. Once he has recovered, he realises how important it is to be safe at the beach, and that means swimming between the red and yellow flags. Boyd said that it was a lack of

CPC Psychic & Lifestyle Expo A VIRTUOSO DOUBLE Newcastle guitar fanciers will be treated to a night of fingerstyle virtuosity when one of Australia’s best exports, Van Larkins, teams up with Italian wunderkind Andrea Valeri for a special show at the Stag and Hunter next week. Larkins, who has just released the scintillating single Outback Storm from his forthcoming album Cinder Moon, told Newcastle Weekly that while his and Andrea’s styles were markedly different, the show would be a great representation of what fingerstyle guitar playing was all about. “Andrea is just an absolute prodigy,” he said.

“He is just so fast and he plays a more traditional, Tommy Emmanuel-esque style of acoustic guitar, whereas I take more of a one-man-band approach – using the body of the guitar for percussion and using alternate tunings to simulate a bass guitar, for example. I experiment and use every possible part of my acoustic guitar to make music – it’s just so much

fun to see what I can do next.” Larkins’ latest single Outback Storm is an evocative musical soundscape that he said drew influences from his rural upbringing and electronic dance music. “I grew up in country WA and I really wanted to capture the feeling of the outback with this song, and it’s the first time I’ve been really obvious about the oneman-band thing,” he said. Aside from the tour taking up much of his time, Larkins is also developing a guitar method for visually impaired people. “Both of my parents have vision issues – my dad is actually an artist who airbrushed an album cover for Phil Emmanuel in the 80s and he can’t paint any more – so I thought it was a brilliant idea. “The program is essentially finished and I’m planning on hitting the ground running with it in 2017 – it’s all very exciting. Van Larkins and Andrea Valeri will play at the Stag and Hunter Hotel on Wednesday 7 December.

OUR HIDDEN HISTORY some way to redressing that balance.” John added that, given that many people featured in the book were given Indigenous names and assimilated into an Indigenous way of life, it painted a much different picture of early Australia. “I would say that the overall theme of the book is one of acceptance,” he said. “When these white people re-assimilated back into white society, both sides mourned the white people’s return to European life with many going on to stand up for the rights of indigenous people.” Living with the Locals is out now through NLA Publishing.

Two researchers at the University of Newcastle have released a book that uncovers a slice of Australian history that, until now, has been sorely neglected. Living with the Locals, co-written by John Maynard, a current director of the Wollotuka Institute at the University of Newcastle and university historian Victoria Haskins, share the compelling, true stories of 13 men, women and children – shipwreck survivors and convict escapees – who were taken in by Indigenous communities of the Torres Strait Islands and eastern Australia between the 1790s and 1870s. John Maynard told Newcastle Weekly that these stories helped paint a clearer picture of the Australian identity. “I would say that firstly, these stories illustrate the fact that Australian history did not begin in 1788 with white settlement,” he said.

Celebrating Original Sin

ANOTHER GREAT EVENT BY

It might seem shocking, but this month marks the 33rd anniversary of Original Sin – one of the trademark tracks from seminal Aussie rockers INXS. What better way to celebrate than with an explosive show from, arguably, Australia’s best INXS tribute act, the aptly-named Original Sin? Written by Michael Hutchence and Andrew Farriss, Original Sin became an international hit for the band in 1984 and started them on a trajectory of global domination. With INXS retiring from the live arena, Original Sin continue to fly the flag, with a jaw-droppingly accurate show that takes to back to the days of Never Tear Us Apart, Don’t Change, What You Need and many more. “Michael Hutchence was a huge influence in my teenage years,” lead vocalist Glenn Campbell said. “INXS were in integral part of me wanting to become a musician – it’s such a buzz playing their music. A TWIST ON HISTORY drew inspiration from all over the world for the décor. Velvet chairs in the champagne lounge give it an heir of exclusivity and luxury, while the drum kit hanging in the drum bar is a spectacle to marvel at. As far as meals go, you’re spoiled for choice. The hotel specialises in smoked barbecue meats such as chicken wings and beef brisket, cooked low and slow over hickory wood pellets on an imported American smoker for a truly authentic taste. There are vegetarian options, plus steaks, salads and a range of burgers. The hotel offers accommodation and caters for a range of functions, from intimate birthday gatherings to Christmas parties and wedding receptions. The Lucky puts a modern twist on its historical roots, serving up a range of tasty dishes in a trendy atmosphere. Photo: Peter Stoop

It’s one of Newcastle’s oldest watering holes, but not as you know it. The Lucky Hotel, formerly the Lucky Country Hotel, is so fresh and modernlooking that we could forgive you if you weren’t aware of its history. The hotel was the first building to be constructed on Hunter Street in 1861, and quickly became a Novocastrian favourite. It closed in 2008 and lay dormant until 2014, when partners in crime and in business, sisters Hayley and Blake McCloy, reopened the hotel with new look and new name. They’d dropped the ‘Country’ and shortened the hotel’s name to The Lucky, paying homage to the heritage-listed building’s roots by maintaining its exposed brickwork. Inside, there are three modern dining areas to choose from: the courtyard; champagne lounge; and drum bar. Having travelled extensively before reopening the hotel, Hayley and Blake

t doesn’t take a fashionista to run a market, but expertise in the field certainly helps – especially when there are two of you. Sisters Karla Cowper and Gemma Slattery are the creative masterminds behind Newcastle’s Hunt & Gather markets. Karla recalls how she and her sister loved playing ‘shopkeepers’ together when they were young. “We both have a passion for fashion,” she said. Karla has 10 years’ experience in fashion buying, including a three-year stint with Burberry Buyers in London. She later worked for David Jones and the General Pants Group in Sydney. Gemma, on the other hand, has a zest for sales and marketing.

WITH FASHION & BEAUTY EDITOR, GEORGIA OSLAND

Shortly after the pair’s sea change from Sydney to Newcastle in 2013, Karla and Gemma saw a gap in the market for a culturally-rich event – one that combined good food, live music, entertainment and markets. Thus, Hunt & Gather was born in November 2013. The monthly event, held at Pacific Park in Newcastle on the third Saturday of the month, is more than just a market. Of course, you can still pick up a handmade treasure from one of Newcastle’s many talented artisans, but at the heart of the event is the notion of coming together and celebrating the city’s culture. And if you can be sure of one thing, it’s that Karla and Gemma have sourced the cream of the crop to sell pre-loved clothing and accessories

and designer labels in ‘the flea’, with roughly 25% of market stalls being fashion-related. These stalls and more will come together on Saturday 3 December for Sunset Gather – an annual, end-of-year event, curated by the girls, that is an extension of Hunt & Gather. This year’s event will be held at Gregson Park in Hamilton from 3pm to 9pm.

STAY SUN SAFE

THIS SUMMER Well, it’s certainly shaping up to be a long hot summer and, before you make a bee-line for the beach this season, the Melanoma Institute of Australia CEO Carole Renouf is reminding people throughout the Hunter to make sure sunburn isn’t their summer holiday souvenir. “The summer holidays in Australia are renowned for families enjoying long and playful days in the sun, surf and sand,” she said. “Whilst summer holidays are the perfect time to reconnect with family and friends, they are also the prime time for severe sunburn. “In addition to being painful, sunburn can have a far more harmful impact. Intense, intermittent exposure, leading to sunburn at a young age, significantly increases your risk of

developing melanoma in the future.” One Australian dies from melanoma every six hours, making it the most common cancer affecting 15-39 year olds and the leading cause of cancer death in 20-39 year olds.

Ms Renouf added that the real tragedy of melanoma was that it was largely preventable. While sunscreen acts as a barrier, the active ingredients break down quickly, meaning a single application in the morning will not last the whole day. “I urge Hunter holiday-makers to not become complacent and actively take steps to help protect against the serious risks posed by just one bad case of sunburn,

CHOCOLATE MOUSSE BODY CREAM

20 drops of eucalyptus essential oil First things first, melt the cocoa butter and shea butter in a double boiler. Stir them a little and once they are nearly melted, add the coconut oil. Once all three are completely liquid, take off the heat and mix in the cocoa powder and cinnamon. Finish with the addition of the eucalyptus essential oil. Really concentrate so you don’t taste the cream by accident – it looks and smells just too inviting! Allow the mixture to rest and cool down, until it starts to become solid. Now, whip it up – ideally, with a handwhisk – until the body butter is fluffy and light, just like chocolate mousse. The perfect after-bath dessert for your skin. Apply plentifully as a daily treat.

Shelf life: 6 months Store in a cool, dark place

Benefits:

4 Tbsp cocoa butter 2 Tbsp shea butter 2 Tbsp coconut oil 2 tsp cocoa powder 1 tsp ground cinnamon

• Cocoa butter improves skin elasticity and accelerates the process of collagen production. • Shea butter is anti-inflammatory, moisturising and supports the skin’s own healing process. It

is beneficial in treating eczema, scars and skin blemishes. • Coconut oil has amazing moisturising and nourishing properties. • Cocoa powder is rich in antioxidants, while its antiseptic powers will clean and heal skin blemishes. • Cinnamon has antibacterial properties. The invigorating eucalyptus essential oil generally purifies the body and gives this cream a delightfully fresh edge.

home trending: STYLING

natural Christmas décor WITH HOME EDITOR, GEORGIA OSLAND

With Christmas less than a month away, no doubt many of us will be starting to plan our Christmas tabletops. Planning a Christmas soiree can be stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. This year, go back to basics with natural, stripped-back décor. Incorporate wooden decorations with fresh wreaths and white and gold details for a truly show-stopping minimalistic style that is totally ontrend. A far cry from traditional, red-and-green-cloaked tabletops, natural décor epitomises the “less is

more” mentality. Start with a simple, white tablecloth, perhaps with a gold or silver trim or lace detail. Then, lay your dinner set. Newcastle Weekly loves this 12-piece star dinner set – $15 from Kmart (1). Next, choose a centrepiece for your table. You might like to display your baked Christmas goodies in a ceramic or glass cake server, dish up nibblies on a wooden cheeseboard, or line the table with ornaments, like this LED large glass globe – $25 from Big W (2).

Beat the bugs The first day of December brings a reminder of the gardening jobs to be done for the month - beginning with stink bugs. These wretched pests are invading citrus trees, and treatment can be difficult. Spray with Malathon and white oil mixed together. Fruit fly are out there waiting for fruit and tomatoes to ripen. Try using traps to lure the fly and remove any infected or fallen fruit from the ground. It is early for lawn grub attack, but there is already evidence of them being present in lawns. Swap from whichever chemical you used last year as the grub does build up immunity to products. Agapanthus have set their colourful long-stemmed blooms ready to open for Christmas, but

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

some are being attacked by mealy bug. Look deep down in their stems. If you notice creatures that look like flour, spray with Confidor. Going away for Christmas? Don’t neglect your garden. Apply a good layer of mulch and arrange for neighbours or family to water regularly, especially on hot days. It will help to arrange potted plants in a shady spot and be sure to leave sprinklers and hoses attached to taps to help your good Samaritans. It’s nearly time to shop for a living, growing Christmas tree. Don’t buy too early. Wait until at least next week, as too long inside can be detrimental to the tree. Remember to have a saucer underneath to enable regular watering.

Why aim to have to have your property on the market as a “coming soon” campaign before Dec 14th 2016 Did you know that properties on both Domain.com.au & Realestate.com.au websites over the Christmas New year period get some of the highest “hits/ views” from potential buyers who want to purchase in the new year - and they share the properties with family and friends more, as well as in general spend longer looking at property online also during this time.

December 2 – 8

PICK OF THE WEEK The Impossible Friday, SBS, 8.30pm, M (2012) The tsunami on Boxing Day, 2004, was a disaster of unprecedented proportions. Here we see couple Maria and Henry (Naomi Watts, above, and Ewan McGregor) and their three sons on holiday in Thailand. When the wave strikes and chaos ensues, the family are separated and so begins a desperate attempt to find their loved ones. Watts is outstanding and was rightly nominated for an Oscar for her role as Maria, whose desperation and strength sends shivers up the spine.

Tropic Thunder

Mission: Impossible Monday, NBN, 8.30pm, M (1996) An enlivenment of the cult TV series, headlined by Tom Cruise and starring Jon Voight, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ving Rhames, Jean Reno and Emmanuelle Béart. The ensemble of actors are perfectly cast, but their talents are under-used by director Brian De Palma, who allows little room for character flair. Opting for gimmickry and gadgetry, his Bond-style setpieces look spectacular and the stunts are spinetingling. Still the best in the series.

Tuesday, ELEVEN, 8.30pm, M (2008) Actor-director Ben Stiller’s (right) star-studded send-up of pampered Hollywood actors and out-of-control action films dares to tread territory laden with minefields. Interestingly, it’s comeback kid Robert Downey Jr, as an Aussie method actor who undergoes a “pigmentationalteration procedure” to play a black man, who steals the spotlight of this equal-opportunity offender. Outrageously funny.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

CANCER JUNE 22 – JULY 22

LIBRA SEP 24 – OCT 23

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

Focus on staying active this summertime and you’ll be feeling sexier. Business and pleasure intertwine and a chance encounter or new connection will feel like serendipity at play. This is the ideal month to take time off to be with close friends and loved ones and to simply enjoy life.

Focus on de-cluttering your home; it’ll clear your head too. Also avoid trying to please everyone as you’ll gain more respect if you hold your ground. On a practical note, if your finances have been feeling the pinch it’s the ideal time to revise your budget.

Focus on your second family; if you’re away from home this holiday season, host a feast for your orphan friends. Mercury is Retrograde and people from your past may re-enter your life, relatives you haven’t seen for a while or friends you went to school with may resurface.

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

Mercury is Retrograde and if you don’t nurture certain friendships, relationships and business connections, they will exit your life. You’ll be very much aware of the issues that confront you and how they restrict you, however, your psychic insights will provide the necessary clues to overcome them.

A flurry of social events will bring out your best. However, Mercury Retrograde warns you about burning the candle at both ends, so focus on keeping everything in moderation otherwise your body will respond to the stress that you are likely to put it under.

Mercury is Retrograde this month so focus on your key relationships, both business and personal, lay it on the table and get answers. However, avoid digging up the past; it’s time for a fresh start, so look forward and not back. Don’t waste energy trying to cajole others.

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20

Focus on feeling your best; add salads to your diet and you’ll be feeling a welcome boost. Mercury is Retrograde so in order to stay out of arguments, avoid butting in with your opinion. Keep calm and carry on; if a loved one says something that stings, don’t be offended.

Happy Birthday Sagittarius! Jupiter, symbolising long distance travel and abundance, is poised to make your relationships and career thrive in the coming 12 months. Meanwhile, Mercury turns Retrograde this month and you will to need to be very careful of your spending habits.

It’s time to socialise, so be prepared to be the leader of the pack when you suggest a fun night out with friends. Your inventive thinking will impress the right people this month, so stop doubting yourself. Those big ideas might work, especially with your creative approach.

Focus on working out strategies for your goals in 2017; be clear about what you want, get organised and take time to tie up loose ends. If you’re serious about de-cluttering, why not hold a garage sale. Avoid taking yourself too seriously and create a light-hearted atmosphere.

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUNE 21 Focus on projecting competence as an unexpected breakthrough will lead to a fantastic career opportunity. The social whirl is increasing but don’t wear yourself out before the main event. A quick detox might be just the tonic you need.
