March against sexual violence
It was great to see the Newcastle Jets execute a potential reversal of fortune, at McDonald Jones Stadium last weekend when they trounced a lacklustre Brisbane Roar in a 4-0 drubbing.

Our cover story, this week, is about Tantrum Youth Arts’ production Manning The Fort, which looks at the role women played in defending Fort Scratchley during WWII. While the fort’s role in the history of Newcastle is widely recognised, this is one story that has not been told nearly enough so, make sure you take a look at the story on page 23 and get along to a show and uncover some local history up close. There’s no denying that we love a winning football side, here in the Hunter so, here’s hoping that new coach Mark Jones can see his side through a successful 2016/17 campaign. They say a side is only as strong as its supporters so, make sure you get along to the next home game, against Sydney FC on 29 October to show the Sydneysiders what it means to play football in Newcastle.

The invisible cycle Anti Poverty Week shines light on human stories
After a bumpy campaign last year that saw the side notch up just eight wins from 27, if the Roar game is any indication, it looks like we might have something to crow about, this year.

ripped out from under us; it was a massive blow,” she said. Mr Baird introduced the legislation directly to the Upper House, bypassing debate in the Lower House, after a special commission of inquiry found evidence of live baiting and animal cruelty in the industry. However, last week, after three months of petitions and protests by the community, Mr Baird announced, alongside Deputy Premier Troy Grant, “the government got it wrong”. “We firmly believed the government’s decisive response to the animal cruelty outlined in [the commission’s report] was the right one, but we misjudged the community’s response,” Mr Baird said. He said the government would give the industry “one final chance”
to weed out animal cruelty, by introducing strict industry reforms. A Greyhound Industry Reform Panel will determine a new regime, including mandatory life bans and extended jail terms for those involved in live baiting and lifetime greyhound registration. Subject to the panel’s recommendations, legislation to repeal the ban will be introduced to parliament early next year. While Miss Ernst is thankful the

It’s all smiles in the ErnstMcFadyen household, for humans and four-legged friends alike. Katherine Ernst and her partner Joe McFadyen say they are “relieved” the Baird government’s ban on greyhound racing will be overturned. The pair own five racing greyhounds and care for another three ‘pre-trainers’ on their 10acre property in Kitchener, just outside Cessnock. Miss Ernst, an editor of online industry publication, Australian Racing Greyhound, said before NSW Premier Mike Baird announced the greyhound racing ban in July, she and her partner had considered buying another property to train more greyhounds, but that plan was scuttled when the legislation was passed in August. “We felt like the rug had been

Student does Hunter region proud
Funding needed for interchange
Hunter TAFE student Rumbidzaishe Mazhura, known as Rumbi, has been crowned the 2016 International Student of the Year. Rumbie won the Vocational Education and Training category of the 2016 Study NSW International Student Awards. Having moved from Zimbabwe to Newcastle 18 months ago to study a Diploma in Business Administration at Hunter TAFE, it was Rumbi’s efforts both inside and outside of her studies that earned her the award. Rumbi volunteers with the UN Youth Australia NSW and Red Cross Australia, and, in her spare time, campaigns for political, economic, cultural and social equality for African women through her blog, Happy African Feminist.

Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery is calling on the NSW government to urgently fund the completion of the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange at Glendale. The project’s first stage, which includes the Pennant Street bridge over the Main Northern Railway line to link Glendale and Cardiff, is currently under construction and earmarked for completion by the year’s end. However, the second stage – a railway station and the interchange itself – is not yet funded. “Prioritising the completion of the LMTI is a no-brainer; it will be a key driver to further investment and development in the area,” Ms Hornery said.
Progress for Williamtown residents Voluntary blood testing for residents affected by the Williamtown RAAF base contamination will start next month. National Centre for Epidemiological Population and Health Professor Martyn Kirk will also lead a long-term study into patterns of disease among people who have been exposed to toxic firefighting chemicals, as is the case for Williamtown residents. Federal Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson said the news had been “a long time coming.” However, she and state Member for Port Stephens Kate Washington slammed the NSW government’s decision to convene a meeting of the Williamtown Elected Representative Group in Sydney on Monday, at a time when state and federal parliaments were sitting. MPs were, as such, unable to attend to be briefed on any developments at Williamtown.
Our team making a difference A month of steps and general knowledge tests were in the spotlight last month when our Castle staff united and raised funds for two charities. It was a mammoth month of stepping that saw our staff team-up and step-up for September. Almost 9 million steps were taken across 10 teams who together raised over $2,350 for the Cerebral Palsy Alliance. The initiative raises money for vital equipment, therapy and services for people living with cerebral palsy. Meanwhile members from our Disability Employment Services put their thinking caps on and pen to paper

for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children’s (RIDBC) trivia night. We narrowly missed out on a podium finish, but more importantly the night raised over $4,000 to help the children they’re working with. Both Castle Personnel teams really enjoyed the fundraising events and said it’s great working with other like-minded organisations, to help people overcome adversity and strive towards their life-goals.

A bright new beginning Changes to centre access On 27th October, the new Dan Murphy’s store will open at Stockland Green Hills, on Mitchell Drive. Other changes include: the closure of the existing Dan Murphy’s store and carpark on the same day. Access to the centre remains as it is via Stronach Avenue and Molly Morgan Drive, through the undercover carpark with no further changes.
A new 100 space parking area at the rear of the centre has opened, ensuring we have plenty of convenient customer parking. Parking remains free of charge. Stay with us while we take this journey – bringing a host of new stores to Green Hills, creating thousands of jobs and keeping shopping local to our region.
While eight stores close at this time to allow the centre to grow, 65 stores remain open and trading as usual, as detailed on the map. Exciting new stores will begin to open before mid-next year.

It can happen to anyone: Jennifer* is still rebuilding her life after an abusive partner took everything she had.
12
The invisible cycle of poverty Jennifer* was robbed of her life – all that it was, and all that it could be. Seven years ago, she was living on a five-acre Hunter property with her two eldest children; held a respectable job as an administration officer and had disposable income. Today, Jennifer epitomises the working-class poor: she earns enough government allowance to pay rent and put food on the table for her and her youngest child, and not much more. She has been out of the workforce for five years and suffers post-traumatic stress disorder – and it’s through no fault of her own. It’s all due to a cycle of disadvantage Jennifer has faced since she met her now ex-partner in 2009. Her partner physically abused her; he was addicted to the drug ice, had a gambling problem, and controlled Jennifer’s finances. Slowly but surely, he robbed Jennifer of everything she had worked so hard for. In 2010, she was evicted from her home because she couldn’t afford the rent, and, a year later, she was fired from her job due to absenteeism and decreased productivity. Forced to send her two eldest children to live with family, Jennifer bounced between refuges,
pub accommodation and share houses. During this period, she moved back in with her partner, whom she now relied on for money after he had spent all of hers. She fell pregnant with her third child – the first to this partner – in May 2012. One year and two Apprehended Violence Orders later, Jennifer finally broke free. However, she is still rebuilding her life. “I had it all and he took everything from me,” she said. “Anybody could end up in this situation. Whilst I don’t look at my life and think, ‘I’m living in poverty’, I struggle to pay the bills and keep a roof over mine and [my child’s] head.” Jennifer’s story is one of the invisible ones that come to light during Anti-Poverty Week, which runs from 16 to 22 October. The national week is an expansion of the United Nations’ annual International AntiPoverty Day on 17 October, and aims to highlight poverty and hardship facing many Australians, just like Jennifer. *A pseudonym was used to protect the woman’s identity. - Georgia Osland
news Stomp out stigma together For many, mental illness is a heavy cross to bear, but it doesn’t have to be. The annual Mental Health Wellness Walk (formally the Mental Health Walk of Pride) encourages all who have been touched by mental illness to stand tall, unite and ‘stomp out the stigma’ together. On again this Saturday 22 October, the walk kicks off at Pacific Park in Newcastle at 10am, winds through the Hunter Street Mall and finishes at Civic Park. Julia Mullaney is on the volunteer organising committee for the walk, which is now in its twelfth year. Every year, the free event attracts a crowd of hundreds carrying colourful balloons to raise the profile of mental
health and wellbeing within the community. For Julia, the walk helps her remember and honour her father, Michael, who took his own life some years ago. It took her years to muster the courage to look upon such a dark time in her life with positivity, having suffered depression herself in the aftermath, but Julia said the walk was a simple way we could remember our loved ones, and support those who still walked among us with mental illness. “It shows, as a community, we support each other: we hear you and we honour you and we celebrate you,” she said. “It makes you proud to walk with people who have walked the same journey.” The Mental Health Wellness

Walk is the Association of the Relatives and Friends of the Mentally Ill (ARAFMI) Hunter’s flagship event. This year’s event features activities in Civic Park at the end of the walk, including Circus

news Seek help sooner rather than later People with vision loss, who don’t seek help, are increasing their risk of falls, isolation and depression, with a recent Guide Dogs Australia survey revealing that 50 per cent of respondents waited more than two years between diagnosis and seeking assistance from the organisation. Further, a staggering 26% waited more than ten years before contacting Guide Dogs NSW/ACT for assistance. It was these concerning numbers that prompted the organisation to launch its Don’t Delay, Seek Help Today campaign with a special visionimpaired bowls day at Charlestown Bowling Club. A new video and brochure outlining the range of services offered by Guide Dogs NSW/ACT will be launched as part of the campaign to help people better understand how the organisation can support them through their vision loss journey. Newcastle musician and long-time client of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Matt McLaren encouraged people in the area dealing with vision loss to seek help sooner rather than later. “My experience is much different because I was born blind, but I can imagine how traumatic it must be to slowly lose your vision,” he said. “The Guide Dogs are there to help you and they’re

Residents revel in big weekend The Lake Mac Big Weekend certainly lived up to its name, as thousands of people flocked to the city’s waterfront for two days of fun-filled activities. Residents revelled in Lake Macquarie’s inaugural Color Run, with bursts of bright colour painting Teralba from top to toe. Dubbed ‘the happiest 5K on the planet’, the five-kilometre fun run’s Lake Macquarie debut was deemed a resounding success. While some enjoyed The Color Run, others marveled at the sheer talent and high-octane action displayed in round four of the 2016

Offshore Superboats series, held on the lake for the first time. The vessels raced within mere metres of the shoreline at speeds of up to 200-kilometre per hour, around a triangular course taking in Warners Bay, Eleebana and Marmong Point. For those who wanted to experience the action first-hand, there were free, come-and-try watersports on the lake. Markets, food stalls, children’s activities and live entertainment along Warners Bay foreshore ensured there was something for everyone.

news Throw away fear for a good cause You know what they say: no guts, no glory. If the idea of trekking ancient trails frightens you as much as it excites you, prominent Hunter volunteer Michelle Faithfull has one good reason why you should give it a go. A member of the Hunter Breast Cancer Foundation’s Board of Directors, Michelle is leading the foundation’s first fundraising trek in Spain, next September. The 10-day trek, organised by Inspired Adventures, will cover the El Camino de Santiago trail from Sarria to Santiago. Every step trekkers
take will raise vital funds for the foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that provides supportive care programs for men and women who are dealing with breast cancer. All money raised will go towards vital, free services, from house cleaning and lawn mowing to patient transport services to and from medical appointments, and all funds will stay within the Hunter region. “There’s the potential to raise $80,000,” Michelle said. Already, five people have signed up for the trek, including Michelle, who is a trekking veteran. This will be her fourth fundraising trek, after having participated in three others covering the Great Wall of China, the
Kokoda Track and the Inca Trail in support of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service. For this trek, each participant must reach an individual fundraising target of $3,500 before embarking on the trip, but Michelle says not to be daunted by this. “There are lots of ways people can raise money; a few events and you can chip away at it easily,” she said. “It’s very rewarding once you get over that sense of fear. “And, if you’ve never trekked before, there’s nothing quite like it to be honest – it’s a great experience.” Visit inspiredadventures.com. au/events/hbcf-el-camino-2017/ for more information on the trek as well as pricing and ticketing details. - Georgia Osland Michelle Faithfull in her hiking gear at Newcastle’s Strezlecki Lookout. WOMEN IN WARTIME While Fort Scratchley’s place in Newcastle's history is deeply ingrained in the hearts and minds of every Novocastrian, not much has been said about the role played by the Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS) who were stationed at the site during World War II. and the various munitions factories in the area.” The production uses local history and memories of real events as stimulus with the memories of the AWAS inspiring a range of visual, physical and text-based performances that will be staged across the site. One of the women in question was Amy’s grandmother-in-law, Dorothy McDonnell, who served as inspiration for the show. “Whenever you would get Dorothy talking, she would reminisce about Fort Scratchley,” Amy said. “She was so proud of how accomplished and capable she and ‘the girls’ were. “She expressed regret that, because she was female, she wasn’t able to stay on and have a career in the army.”
Remembering Newy hardcore If you liked your music loud and fast in the late 90s and early noughties, chances are you’ll be well aware of Newcastle metallic hardcore stalwarts Life.Love.Regret. To celebrate Novotone Studios’ first birthday, the boys are getting back together for a special one-off show at the Cambridge Hotel. Featuring Luke Crew, Jamie Chipperfield, Brad McDougall and Jon Williams of Arms Reach, Pitfall, Disengage and Found My Direction respectively, LLR toured Australia sharing stages with Cro Mags, Sick Of It All and Hatebreed to name just a few. Taking sonic influence from bands like Integrity, Buried Alive and Unbroken, the album Sick Of Goodbyes was released by Resist Records in 2001 and is now revered as an essential Australian hardcore classic. Catch Life.Love.Regret at the Cambridge Hotel on Friday 4 November.
Amy added that the production would also enlist the services of contemporary dance initiative the Flipside Project, who will choreograph a piece, specifically for the production. “This is a very contemporary interpretation of events that happened during the war,” Amy said. “It’s a highly entertaining musical, dance and theatrical extravaganza and the location is simply magnificent.” Manning The Fort is on at Fort Scratchley from Thursday 20 October to Saturday 29 October. Tantrum Youth Arts are redressing that balance with a site-specific production Manning the Fort, premiering today (Thursday) which tells the story of these women, looking at how the opportunity to experience life outside the home and make a contribution to the war effort shaped their lives and the lives of Australian women for generations to come. “During the war, women stepped up to fill a variety of roles that were vacated by the men who were off fighting, and manning the searchlights and guns at the fort was certainly a part of that,” producer Amy Hardingham told Newcastle Weekly. “The site was very important at the time because Newcastle Harbour really needed to be defended due to the significance of the steelworks

Comic book legend Stan Lee is back with a new graphic novel series – The Zodiac Legacy. When twelve magical superpowers are unleashed on the world, a ChineseAmerican teenager named Steven is thrown into the middle of an epic global chase. He’ll have to master strange powers, outrun super-powered mercenaries, and unlock the mysterious powers of the Zodiac. The first two books in the series, The Zodiac Legacy: Convergence (RRP $16.99) and The Zodiac Legacy: The Dragon’s Return (RRP $16.99) are now available at Target, Dymocks, independent book and toy retailers.
Given that they are celebrating their 60th year this year, it comes as no surprise that the Waratah Male Voice Choir would want to celebrate such an auspicious milestone. To that end, the choir will be pulling out all the stops, later this month for a celebratory concert, dubbed Harmony in October. Joining the Waratah Male Voice Choir will be the 42-strong Wollongong Lamplighters Choir so, The Sacred Heart Cathedral, Hamilton is the place to be on Sunday 30 October, from 1pm, for a musical extravaganza. The choir is always on the lookout for new members so, if you think you have what it takes, phone Ed Davies on 4958 3142 or Neil Cowie on 4951 5096 and let your voice be heard.

MINGAY
HITS HOLLYWOOD If you had’ve asked Novocastrianbred actor Ben Mingay, around ten years ago, what his career aspirations would be, his answer might be markedly different to the one he gives in 2016. “In the early days, my main career goal was to have a headlining gig at SJs,” Mingay told Newcastle Weekly. Well, with spots on such TV shows as Packed to the Rafters and Wonderland as well as theatrical roles in Phantom of the Opera and Officer and a Gentleman under his belt, Mingay has certainly eclipsed those dreams. The actor, from Elemore Vale, is set to make his big screen Hollywood debut in the Mel Gibson-directed blockbuster Hacksaw Ridge – a sobering WWII biopic about the first conscientious

objector Desmond Doss who, during the battle of Okinawa, saved 75 men without firing or carrying a gun. Mingay joins a cast that includes US stars Andrew Garfield and Vince Vaughn, as well as a “who’s who” of Aussie actors including Sam Worthington, Hugo Weaving, Rachael Griffiths and Richard Roxburgh. “There were plenty of ‘pinch me’ moments during filming, I can tell you,” Mingay, who plays mechanic Grease Nolan in the film, said. “Not least of which working with Mel Gibson who is just a phenomenal actor and director but also things like having lunch with Vince Vaughn and talking about life – it’s just surreal.” Hacksaw Ridge is in cinemas from November 3. -Stephen Bisset

Next year, Chris hopes to make Octoberfeast “bigger and better”, pending a liquor licence approval with upcoming redevelopments, which will allow the café to serve alcohol.
Oktober Feast
This month is ‘Octoberfeast’ at Café Deore. Owner Christopher Kodela pays homage to his Austrian and Slovenian heritage by adding dishes such as cheese kransky, sauerkraut, beef goulash and pork schnitzel to the menu in celebration of Germany’s hallmark festival, Oktoberfest. The café is known for occasional menu changes – Oktoberfest being one of them, and Christmas in July another. Chris said it generated interest and gave customers variety. “People look forward to it,” he said. “It’s something different to the everyday.”
Live Entertainment Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights. Karaoke last Saturday of every month. Fun for the whole family.

Tackling difficult plants There are plants that can be difficult to grow, but none surpass African violets and fuchsias. Instead of throwing away African violets when they stop flowering, try these hints: good light; keep turning the plant to get light on all sides; fresh air, but not a draught; water carefully, don’t have water sitting in the saucer; fertilise every two weeks in spring, summer and autumn, never in winter; and remove spent blooms and dead leaves. Fuchsias flower from June through to December. At the end of this period, your fuchsia will be short on nitrogen - the plant’s way of counteracting hot summers. During this period, they should be watered sparingly. When the weather becomes cooler in April, prune your plant and nourish with a slow release fertiliser. Ideal conditions for growing fuchsias include early morning sun, soil kept moist but not wet; and protection from wind and frost.

You’ve heard of the tiny house movement – self-contained homes usually measuring under 300-square-feet – and now, the world’s first tiny house has been built out of a shipping container in Carrington. Contain Yourself Australia (CYA) founder Sean McGilvray has, over the past two years, developed a system to convert any disused shipping container into a tiny house. The Carrington world-first project was unveiled last week. Quick and easy to install, a CYA tiny house can be constructed for emergency housing after natural disasters. It can be customised to build a sleek, modern home or used

Contain Yourself Australia was the first to build a tiny house out of a disused shipping container.
as an office, an extra bedroom or granny flat. Mr McGilvray calls it “floating infrastructure” – easy to put up, take down, and relocate. And, best of all, it means that safe, affordable, sustainable living is within reach. Mr McGilvray said there were 17 million disused shipping containers in the world. “Not only is this unsustainable, it’s totally unaffordable,” he said. “I believe that everyone has the right to shelter, to be safe and secure. That’s why I’m launching a crowd funding campaign to share my system with the world by developing tutorial videos and materials.” - Georgia Osland

PICK OF THE WEEK Under The Tuscan Sun Friday, 7TWO, 8.30pm, M (2003) Nights in Rodanthe star Diane Lane (left) features in this inconsequential but charming foreign production as a recently divorced San Francisco writer who impulsively buys an Italian villa while on a 10-day tour of Tuscany. She soon endears herself to the locals, finds romance with a hunky suitor and learns to start her life anew. Writer-director Audrey Wells (Shall We Dance?) capitalises on Lane’s naturally sunny disposition, crafting a love letter to the Italian town through her sweet mix of comedy and romance.

Dreamgirls
Shaun Of The Dead Tuesday, ELEVEN, 9pm, MA15+ (2004) In the title role, Simon Pegg (left) leads a who’s who of contemporary UK comedy in a classic exhibition of black humour that has as much to do with man’s eternal fascination with the pub as it does with parodying George A. Romero’s 1978 zombie classic Dawn of the Dead. Here, Shaun begins with three objectives: to visit his mum, win his girlfriend back and “sort his life out”. Now all that stands in his way, naturally, is the flesh-eating living dead. On the risqué side of mainstream, it’s dead good.
Friday, ELEVEN, 8.30pm, M (2006) To understand the definition of a showstopper, look no further than Golden Globe-winner Jennifer Hudson belting out And I Am Telling You in this adaptation of the musical, where the American Idol reject steals the show from Beyoncé Knowles (right). Following the rise of ’60s soul trio The Dreamettes, and echoing the story of The Supremes, this film explores the African-American music industry to reveal the grim side of show business.

Your confidence grows in leaps and bounds, which is very attractive to the opposite sex, but don't try to browbeat others or you could spoil a potentially great time. If you have any Scorpios in your circle, they might be playing a particularly large part this month.
Mercury in Libra creates a need to look at matters objectively without getting emotional. However you need to be careful of being overly analytical and procrastinating on important issues, as this will only frustrate yourself and others. Try to regain a more balanced outlook.
Mars is in Capricorn, so add charm to any requests you make to bosses, clients, colleagues, your bank manager or accountant. If there is any help or advice you can give others, offer it promptly as your efforts will pay off later when you least expect it.
make you proud.
LEO: JUL 23 - AUG 23
SCORPIO: OCT 24 - NOV 22
AQUARIUS: JAN 21 - FEB 19
TAURUS: APR 21 - MAY 21
The focus is on your bones and joints. Be certain to get enough vitamin D by getting outdoor exercise, so try gardening, walking on the beach or playing with your children in the local park. For those who are more energetic, it is the ideal time for bushwalking.
With two New Moons this month you have a wonderful opportunity to direct your life, make things happen and realise your dreams. It is time to assess matters with clarity and wisdom; if you are in a relationship, your ability to communicate with your partner is excellent.
From 23 October onwards, it is the ideal time to put your best foot forward career wise. Don't be afraid to push ahead with your ambitions or to present your ideas to others because they will look upon them favourably. Make time to rest and relax.
VIRGO: AUG 24 - SEPT 23
SAGITTARIUS: NOV 23 - DEC 21
PISCES: FEB 20 - MAR 20
Good fortune at work or financially will give you a lift, but watch your spending. Money could gush out on special purchases, impulsive outlays and generous deeds so rein it in. Mars is in Capricorn increasing your desire for fun, however be careful of burning the candle at both ends.
Mercury in Libra indicates that friendships will have complex emotional layers, with conflicts of interest or clashes to defuse. However, an unusual outing will be fun and enlightening; for singles it may even offer intriguing romantic possibilities to look forward to.
Neptune is in Pisces and intuition and imagination are running riot; try to keep them under control and channel them positively. This is the ideal time to take your relationship a step further; any commitments made this month will not be taken lightly, so consider every decision carefully.
The stars are giving you the ability to assert yourself and to direct a great deal of energy towards achieving success. There will be a tendency to overwork and neglect your partner and social life so ensure you focus on creating balance both at home and at work.
GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21 This is the ideal time to take action, order your financial affairs and to work hard without becoming tired or bored. There will be a sense of dynamism in the air and you will want to make things happen. Romantically you are likely to be more assertive.
