– three gold medals and two silver is certainly nothing to sneeze at. I know I spoke about Maddie on this page a couple of weeks ago, however, when she came into our office for the photo-shoot with her mum Nikki, last week I was struck by how down-toearth, humble and unaffected by her mammoth Rio achievement Maddie was – quite a welcome respite from the increasing levels of diva or just plain bad behavior exhibited by some highprofile sports stars. Well done Maddie, you’ve done the Hunter proud. Also, this week, we have a bumper nine-page Melbourne Cup feature. Even though this iconic race is held about eight hours drive from us here in the Hunter, its popularity reverberates around the country and we are certainly not immune to it’s beguiling charms. So, if you’re planning a bit of a Melbourne Cup soiree, this year, make sure you turn to page 27 for some great ways to celebrate the race that stops the nation. Have a great week. - Stephen Bisset

Hunter economy supercharged great café culture, it was no wonder Newcastle was selected to host the event. “We’re so fortunate to have a passionate supporter-base in motorsports here in Newcastle but we also are equally fortunate to have a fantastic city,” she said. In big news for Newcastle’s tourism industry, the government will spend $12.7 million on a new cruise ship terminal in Newcastle Harbour. The 3000-square-metre multipurpose terminal will be similar in scale to Sydney’s White Bay Terminal and built at the Channel Berth in Carrington. Construction is due to start in mid2017 and finish in 2018. Mr Baird also announced the Hunter Innovation Project – a $17.8 million venture, to which the government has committed $9.8 million, to

It includes an “innovation hub”, a dedicated space in Newcastle’s CBD, due for completion by early 2019, to foster collaboration between researchers, students, developers, investors, start-ups and small-tomedium-sized enterprises.

hristmas came early for the Hunter region last week, with NSW Premier Mike Baird paying a visit to announce several projects and investments. Newcastle will host the final series of the Virgin Australia Supercars Championship for the first time in 2017, and each year for five years thereafter. A specialised circuit will be built, including a high-speed straight along the foreshore, a series of sharp turns through the CBD, and a strip through Camp Shortland, the park behind Nobbys Beach. The scenic switch from Sydney’s Olympic Park to Newcastle’s harbourside is expected to inject more than $57 million into the Hunter economy. revolution

On the second floor of Market Square, in Newcastle’s Hunter Street Mall, there’s a revolution going on - a Vintage Revolution.

M

Vintage Revolution advertising moment

argaret Vanderbilt has recently opened the doors of Vintage Revolution, a preloved fashion boutique, for both men and women, with a focus on recycling and repurposing, along with her partner Terry Lee Barker, whose business, Barker Guitars [under the same roof], turns out custom-made, one-of-a-kind guitars. As soon as you walk in to the small, but well -appointed space - thanks to the clever use of pallets for shop fittings - the array of retro clothing on display, along with the lovingly-created ‘60s and ‘70s-themed collages that line the walls - you are instantly transported to another time; a time when clothing was made to last. “Vintage Revolution is all about upcycling, recycling and vintage clothing,” says Margaret. “We try to be as environmentally friendly as possible because the rag trade is one of the worst for landfill and, for us, it’s about being responsible. “In Australia, I think it’s something like 85% of donated clothes end up as landfill – clothes that could easily be repurposed, recycled or resold. We try to get things in the best condition possible and I try to upcycle clothes as well. I find great things and bring them up to modern standards.” From denim jackets and jeans to one-off, upcycled pieces and repurposed tye-dyed tee shirts, Vintage Revolution is the place to go to add that

dash of originality to your wardrobe. “People want something unique,” Margaret said. “They can come in to a place like this, buy some clothes, and they’re not going to see themselves 25 times down the street.” When it comes to guitars, adding the word “custom” to the conversation usually adds at least an extra zero to the price tag. No so for Terry Lee Barker and Barker Guitars. With prices sitting at around the $1000 mark (including a good-quality tweed hard case and top-quality components and finishes), suddenly a custom guitar is not so unattainable. “My focus is on really good, pro-quality stuff that professional players will take out and use as tools within a good price range, because I just think that the price of stuff like Gibsons and Fenders is just crazy,” he said. With more than 50 years of playing, repairing and building guitars under his belt, Terry Lee Barker knows what players want out of their beloved instrument and will sit down with you to figure out the best option for your style of playing and aesthetic preferences. “All the components I use in all my guitars are the exactly the same as you would find in a Fender and, in fact, a lot of them are of a higher standard,” he says.

It’s all about custom fashion and quality axes at Vintage Revolution and Barker Guitars.

“What’s the search that every guitar player on earth is on? The search for great tone – and that search always starts at the source – the guitar which is why I only use the bestquality components.” Aside from custom guitars, you can also take your existing guitar in and Terry will set it up and, in some cases repair it, to make it sound its best. “I guarantee all my work – I give the same warranty on workmanship and parts as anyone else will and I absolutely stand by everything I build. My ethics on it is to try and build something that is proquality that hits a reasonable price point and still performs at the same level as the top brands do.” So, for great quality recycled, upcycled and repurposed clothes or for your next big guitar purchase, Vintage Revolution and Barker Guitars is the place to go.

National day casts spotlight on mental health Every year, one in four young Australians will experience mental health issues. It is statistics like this that the inaugural Headspace Day, on Tuesday 11 October, hopes to shine a light on. The day was established by Headspace, the leading national youth mental health service. With 95 centres across Australia, including Newcastle, Headspace helps 12 to 25-year-olds tackle everything from relationship issues to drug and alcohol abuse.

“[Headspace Day is] about helping the community understand the most significant health issue young people are facing, and letting young people know there are services out there [to help],” she said. Held to coincide with World Mental Health Week, from 8 to 15 October, the national day will see a number of high-profile celebrities, sports stars, musicians and politicians. These people will be sporting a special Access All Areas wristband on the day. Novocastrians can do the same by dropping in to Headspace Newcastle and picking up a free wristband and sharing a photo on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter with the hashtag ‘#headspaceday’.

It’s just one of a raft of services available to young people struggling with mental health issues – something Headspace Newcastle centre manager Belinda Walsh wants the community to know.

Chemical identified as toxic

As an added bonus, those who share their photos on social media will go into the draw to win a Golden Ticket to all live music shows at all-ages venue Drone Newcastle for 12 months. The competition ends 30 October. You can donate online at headspace.org.au - Georgia Osland

One of the chemicals found at Williamtown RAAF base has been identified as “toxic to animals, including humans”. PFOA – a chemical found in aqueous film-forming foam, which was used at the RAAF base from 1976 – was highlighted by the Stockholm Convention’s Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee as “likely, as a result of [its] long-range environmental transport, to lead adverse human health impacts” and that “global action is warranted”. Member for Paterson Meryl Swanson has written to Health Minister Sussan Ley, asking her to clarify the ramifications of the finding on Australian health guidelines. The guidelines currently state there is no evidence to suggest PFOA is toxic to humans. Opposition Leader Bill Shorten described the government’s treatment of Williamtown residents as “scandalous”.

Newcastle’s most vulnerable will be in the spotlight next month when the city’s inaugural Registry Week takes place. Representatives Registry Week aims to from local homelessness services will take to the address the needs of streets, in the early hours of October 18, 19 and Newcastle’s homeless. 20, to survey people sleeping rough in the area to determine their individual needs. Belinda McDaid, special works manager at the St Vincent de Paul Society, which is coordinating the initiative, said housing was a primary requirement for the homeless because people needed to feel safe and secure before they could work on other things, like health and substance abuse. “Registry Week has been chosen as the starting point of our initiative in Newcastle because it is a proven method that produces solid data on people sleeping rough,” she said. This methodology has already been adopted in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth and Canberra. The Newcastle initiative is being funded by Nova for Women and Children through the NSW Department of Family and Community Services. You can get involved by volunteering to help conduct the survey, reporting a rough sleeper, donating a suspended coffee or meal or offering accommodation. cover story

Maitland swimmer Maddison Elliott did the nation proud at the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

The Hunter’s golden girl Raw talent is hard to find, but if past performance is anything to go by, the only way is up for Maitland’s Maddison Elliott. At just 17 years old, the S8 class swimmer already has two consecutive Paralympic Games under her belt, the last of which earned Australia three gold and two silver medals. Last month’s Rio 2016 Paralympic Games quickly climbed to the top of

Maddie’s career highlights, adding one world and one Paralympic record to her growing list of accolades. Maddie, who was born with cerebral palsy that affects the right side of her body, became the first in her class to swim the 50-metre freestyle in under 30 seconds (29:73). She also set a Paralympic record in the 100m freestyle, finishing in 1:04:73 – two

one-hundredths of a second off the world record. Maddie dedicated this win to her friend and former Novocastrian Swim Club clubmate Jade Frith, who was fatally hit by a car on Hillsborough Road, Warners Bay in April. Her third gold medal came from the 4x100m freestyle relay. She won a further two silver medals in the 100m backstroke and 4x100m medley relay. Maddie’s efforts placed her tenth overall by gold medal count, and twelfth by total medal count. “It’s a lot to take in,” she said. “But it’s good to be back on home soil.” The Hunter prodigy started swimming when she was six months old, initially as a form of physiotherapy. But as she grew older and watched her older sister compete and earn medals in swimming, she became determined to do the same.

Maddie made her international debut in 2011. That year she won three gold, five silver and one bronze medal at the Australian Multi-Class Age Swimming Championships in Canberra. In 2012, at age 13, she became the youngest Australian Paralympic gold medallist at the London Summer Paralympics in the 4x100m freestyle relay. She also won silver in the 50m freestyle and bronze in the 100m and 400m freestyle. Maddie set a world record in the 100m freestyle at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, and returned in 2015 to bag seven medals at the IPC World Championships. Maddie will now enjoy a short break before resuming training with the University of Newcastle’s NUSwim team under coach Paul Sharman. Her ultimate goal is to compete at five consecutive Paralympic Games. - Georgia Osland

Do-gooders in orange You’ll spot them a mile away in their high-vis; an enthusiastic bunch of canoeists with a zest for making the world a better place. Newy Paddlers is a relatively new club, established about six months ago and already boasting more than 30 members – men and women, of all ages and walks of life. At Newy Paddlers, they do things a little differently. Winning is not the sole aim of the game. The club maintains a strong focus on raising money for various charities through local canoeing events, the next being the Hawkesbury Classic on 29 October, of which the Arrow Bone Marrow Transplant Foundation is the major beneficiary.

Over the years, the event has raised more than $3.3 million for leukaemia research. This year, 15 Newy Paddlers will compete in the non-competitive Brooklyn and Bust categories of the 111-kilometre overnight Canoe Classic along the Hawkesbury River in an effort to help reach the event’s $400,000 fundraising goal for the 40th anniversary. Get on the bargain trail in Maitland The popular Garage Sale Trail will be kicking off in Maitland, later this month, and council is asking the community to think differently about waste and participate in the nationwide event. Council’s development and environment manager David Simm said events like the Garage Sale Trail were a great way to reduce landfill locally. “Each year council processes more than 40,000 tonnes of landfill at The Mount Vincent Road Waste Management Centre and any initiative that helps reduce waste going to landfill benefits the environment and community,” he said. “Garage Sale Trail is a serious message, but delivered in a really fun way. Yes, it’s a great way to find a unique bargain and meet your neighbours, but it’s so much more than that.” Garage Sale Trail is a not for profit community enterprise founded in 2010, and has grown from one event in Sydney to a national, council-powered program. There are around 15 sales already registered in the Maitland area so if you want your garage on the trail go to garagesaletrail.com.au

news Go sober in October People of the Hunter are being encouraged to put down the bottle, for the month of October, all in the name of raising awareness about alcoholrelated harm in young people. Hunter Life Education launched their 2016 Ocsober campaign in Wheeler Place, Newcastle last week with a special event that saw ambassadors Carly Saunders and Tresne Middleton from My Kitchen Rules, immersed in a dunking machine. People were also given the opportunity to don a pair of perception-altering “beer goggles” that give the wearer the vision of someone who is under the influence of alcohol. Hunter Life Education executive officer Sarah Gray told Newcastle Weekly the launch was a resounding success. “The launch went really well – we had about 150 people come along and

Now in le t Newcas

Carly and Tresne were 100% great sports about being dunked for a good cause” she said. “The whole point of the dunking and the beer goggles is to bring home the fact that around 40% of 14 to 19 year-olds drink at levels that risk accident and injury, which is pretty alarming.” Sarah added that, with statistics like people aged 15-24 accounting for 52% of all alcoholrelated injuries, initiatives like Ocsober were integral in reversing such worrying trends. “Sydney University recently did research into events like Ocsober and Dry July which indicated that these initiatives have a direct health impact – it’s about people getting to know their sober selves,” she said. Try a new sport in Lake Mac The Hunter’s young and young at heart will be able to try a new sport, be active and have fun at a free sports festival in Lake Macquarie this month. The Hunter Academy of Sport’s SportsFest family fun day is on Sunday 9 October at Speers Point Park from 10am to 4pm. The Academy’s CEO Brett O’Farrell said a range of sports will be on offer, including less well known sports such as lacrosse, baseball, tae kwon do and gridiron. There will also be a rock climbing wall so people can try one of the new sports for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. “The event has its origins in the Festival of Sport but for the first time, all the events are in one place so kids and families can try of a number of sports,” Mr O’Farrell said. “People simply visit a sport station and Academy coaches and other game experts will give them some tips,” he said. “Experts include Lake Macquarie baseballer Lachlan Wells, who now plays in the USA.” Damien Hoar, 19, from Adamstown Heights was at the event preview, last week. He picked up a lacrosse stick at a learn to play session last year and loves it so much he is moving to Melbourne to play in a league. “Try a sport and you never know where it may take you,” Mr O’Farrell said. The program also includes five kilometre and 10 kilometre fun runs along the shores of Lake Macquarie starting at 11am. While SportsFest is free the fun run has an entry fee of $20 with all proceeds going to Cancer Council for local support services. Visiting sportsfest.gofundraise.com.au to register. Maitland residents, it’s time to get mulching. October is Mulchtober at the Mount Vincent Road Waste Management Centre, where residents can pick up mulch for free. The month-long giveaway is an initiative of Maitland City Council’s Waste Services section. Council’s Manager Development and Environment, David Simm, said with the weather warming up, now was the perfect time to mulch your garden. “Mulch is a great addition to any garden as it helps retain soil moisture, provides root protection during hot and cold weather and provides nutrients as it breaks down,” Mr Simm said. For those residents who can’t make it to the waste management centre to pick up mulch, the council is offering free delivery to residents within the local government area.

Looking much the same as a traditional telephone, the CapTel captioned handset has a large built in screen that displays the text of the other party’s conversation. Someone who may struggle to hear over the phone can keep up with the conversation by simply reading the text (also known as captions). The captions are provided free of charge by the Federal Government’s National Relay Service. The CapTel handset can be rented for $55 per year plus a $50 refundable deposit. MIRACLE ith a few exceptions (namely the birth of rock and roll and hip-hop), there are few popular music genres that have cut such a swathe through the global cultural zeitgeist as disco. The genre that melded the best of pop, funk, salsa and soul with an undeniably danceable syncopated rhythm changed the face of popular music, when it exploded onto the scene in the mid-1970s and its influences reverberate throughout many genres to this day thanks to the likes of Bruno Mars, Madonna and Daft Punk. When talking about disco, it’s almost impossible to do so without mentioning UK heavyweights Hot Chocolate. During the 1970s and 80s, Hot Chocolate became synonymous with disco in all corners of the globe, thanks to such songs as You Sexy Thing, Heaven’s In The Backseat of My Cadillac, and Everyone’s a Winner. Still very much a going concern (albeit minus a few original members), the band is winging its way back to Australia this month, and Patrick Olive, the band’s original guitarist and the guy responsible for those sultry riffs, told Newcastle Weekly he couldn’t wait. “We’re still touring quite regularly around the globe but Australia is still definitely one of our favorite places – you guys really know how to get down,” he laughed. For this tour, the band will be bringing Liverpudlian 70s soul rockers The Real Thing and Olive added that it would be an all killer-no filler set of solid gold classics. “We always pull out all the stops when we play, even now,” he said. “We never give the audience a chance to take

a breather – it’s a very fun and full show.” Hot Chocolate’s first foray into superstardom came from a reggae version of Give Peace a Chance. Then, under the guidance of uber-producer Mickie Most, the band built a solid name for themselves with a string of hits including Brother Louie and Love Is Live. However it wasn’t until the advent of disco that the band became a household name, thanks to a slinky sound that was almost purpose-built for disco fever. Before you could say “disco ball”, they were dominating charts and filling dancefloors worldwide – a time Olive remembers fondly. “It was really such a crazy time –especially in America,” he said. “I know it might sound a bit old fashioned now but everyone really was boogying down – it was a truly amazing time.” Catch Hot Chocolate and The Real Thing at Wests Lambton on Wednesday 19 October. -Stephen Bisset

It’s certainly been a crazy life of late for country rockers The Wolfe Brothers with their third album – the aptly titled This Crazy Life making serious headway both here and in the States. “It’s going great guns at the moment,” Tom Wolfe told Newcastle Weekly. “We’re actually in Nashville right now and the audiences have been great, although we’re actually lost right now, but if you’re going to get lost, Nashville isn’t a bad place to do it in.” The album in question went straight to number one on the iTunes country charts here in Australia, when it was released in June, and with much hoopla still surrounding the record, the band will be hitting Australian roads again, from this month, for a tour that could be best described as a mini-festival. The This Crazy Life tour will feature The Wolfe Brothers, Canadian country star Gord Bamford, Newcastle’s own and one time half of McAlister Kemp – Troy Kemp, current CMAA best new talent golden guitar winner Christie Lamb, rising New Zealand star Jody Direen and ABC Music’s newest signing Craig Heath. Tom said the tour would be a neo-country extravaganza that will give punters a chance to see some of the best and brightest up and coming country talent. “We’re all really looking forward to this one – it’s going to be a blast,” he said. “I guess it kind of is like a mini-festival but it gives some great artists a the chance to play a massive show and lets the artists showcase what Aussie country music in 2016 is all about.” Catch the This Crazy Life tour at Wests Lambton on Saturday 22 October.

THE JETS STILL FIRING Having only recently played a mammoth soldout show at Belmont 16s, Newcastle’s favourite rockers The Screaming Jets will be returning to the venue this month, kicking off a trio of Hunter-based gigs for the band. Frontman Dave Gleeson told Newcastle Weekly that, after such a huge turnout last time – testament to the popularity of the band’s latest album Chrome, the boys couldn’t say no to a second go-round. “It’s just been fantastic,” Gleeson said of the album’s reception. “Belmont was absolutely rockin’ last time and this time will be no different. I’m champing at the bit – I’ve got about a week to go with the Angels [Gleeson also fronts the Angels] and then it’s back on the road with the Jets. It’s a busy life – two bands, one wife, two kids, but one I wouldn’t swap for quids.” The current run will be the second national

jaunt in support of Chrome – the band’s first studio album in eight years and one that revels in a take-no-prisoners, unpretentious brand of rock and roll – and Gleeson said the album was some of the Jets’ best work. “We’d been playing some of the songs at gigs before the release to kind of road test them and the reaction they were getting from fans alongside songs like Better made us realise that we had something really

special with this record,” he said. “The line-up we’ve got now has been together for eight years – the longest of any Jets line-up and we’re absolutely firing.” Catch The Screaming Jets at Belmont 16s on Friday 21 October. They will also be playing at The Royal Hotel, Muswellbrook on Saturday 5 November and at the Hope Rocks festival at Hope Estate, Pokolbin on Saturday 26 November. - Stephen Bisset

Having been a fixture of the Pacific Highway at Charlestown for more than 30 years, this is one restaurant that really knows its flavours – from the rich, yet finely tuned flavours of the massaman curry to the delicate creaminess of their butter chicken and a healthy selection of red and green curries, kormas, Tom Yum Gai and Penang curries, there is something on this restaurant’s sizable two menus to suit all palates. Aside from the fantastic array of food on offer, Nara Thai and Uncle Raja’s Curry House also puts a big emphasis on being a place you can take the whole family for a great night out. The restaurant boasts an array of ‘costumes’ so the young and the

young at heart can inject a sense of fun into their dining experience. Speaking of fun, the restaurant also offers some of the best local live entertainment on Friday and Saturday nights as well as the ubertalented piano maestro Roxy taking up a residency every Wednesday night. Also, you might also see manager Judi Fing, a seasoned and talented performer in her own right, pick up the mic and croon a few numbers. The restaurant caters for a range of functions, including family gatherings and birthday celebrations. If you don’t feel like heading out, Nara Thai and Uncle Raja’s Curry House offers home delivery. Nara Thai and Uncle Raja’s Curry House is located at 165 Pacific Highway, Charlestown. Phone: 4942 4199 or 4943 0663.

It’s all about fun and great food for Nara Thai and Uncle Raja’s Curry House manager Judi Fing.

HOW TO ACCESSORISE YOUR LBD

The little black dress, or LBD, is a worshipped wardrobe staple. Black is an elegant colour to begin with – all you need is a few accessories to dress it up for a formal occasion.

NYC heel $79.95 Sportsgirl Dazzling Dainty Droplets necklace $119 Pandora

1. Dress up your feet

2. Grab a clutch or handbag

3. Add some jewellery

A nice, sleek pair of heels will go a long way toward making your little black dress pop. Black teams up nicely with any colour, but you may like to contrast your black dress with a bit of colour to make your outfit really stand out. Giving your stature some height with a pair of heels can do wonders for those of us who are vertically challenged; otherwise, ballet flats or similar can look just as elegant.

An accessory that looks good and serves a functional purpose? Sign us up! A good-sized clutch or handbag is the perfect partner in crime to your little black dress. Here is your chance to add in funky colours or patterns to break up the black. A sparkly gold or silver clutch or handbag works well, too.

Jewellery is the final touch to accessorising your little black dress, or any dress, for that matter. A necklace will draw attention to your face and neckline – a particularly dramatic effect if your dress has a sweetheart or plunging neckline. A long necklace gives the illusion of height, whereas a short, chunky and colourful necklace will do well to tie your other colourful accessories together.

October in the garden truly does define spring, especially if the recent unsettled weather has finished. This month, gardeners are rewarded for their devotion during winter but the spring garden still requires ongoing maintenance. Once bulbs have finished flowering, fertilise to create protein storage for next year. Prune springflowering trees and shrubs once they finish blooming and fertilise. Tropical plants can also be pruned. Hibiscus, once pruned, should be fertilised with cow manure. Daisies and lavender will need to be deadheaded and lightly pruned once blooms fade - then fertilise. Lawns, now actively growing, will respond to weeds being eliminated. I am surprised when gardeners complain that a product hasn’t worked on bindiis and other weeds. My first questions being- had you mown the lawn before application? Did you spray on wet grass and was

IN THE GARDEN JUDY SHARPE

the treatment followed by six hours of sun, and did you let the weeds die down before mowing? Obviously, if I get yes answers the problem is solved. Summer vegetables such as tomatoes, capsicum, eggplant and lettuce will respond to weekly applications of Flourish. Greens, such as silver beet and parsley, love a small amount of blood and bone to increase their rich colour. Passionfruit enthusiasts beware, the unsettled spring weather will discourage fruit setting - apply sulphate of potash to help this problem.

Lifestyle appeal tightens market

T

he property market in The Junction has tightened over recent years, as homeowners look to stay put. Set back about three kilometres from Merewether Beach, The Junction offers all the magic of a seaside lifestyle with the added benefit of inner-city convenience. McGrath Newcastle City sales agent Tammy Hawkins believes it is these attributes that make the suburb so attractive to buyers, and, more importantly, those already living there. “It would seem that the appeal of having the seaside, cosmopolitan lifestyle as well as all the amenities you could ask for at your doorstep is too much to give up,” she said. “I have spoken to many local residents who have confirmed that it is just too hard to move away from the suburb after having everything at your fingertips.” In The Junction, the number of house sales has more than halved year-on-year from the 2014/15 financial year to the 2015/16 financial year.

The median house price is $1.215 million (RP Data), but Ms Hawkins says this usually does not get taken due to the sheer lack of supply and turnover. Knock-down rebuilds are becoming increasingly commonplace, with buyers prepared to pay substantial money for quality new homes in the area. One property in particular, 43 Kenrick Street, recently fetched a whopping $2.1 million. House prices in The Junction are similar to those in neighbouring suburbs of Merewether and Cooks Hill. There are about 500 residential properties in The Junction, with a heavy commercial mix. Residents enjoy living within walking distance of shopping centre The Junction Fair, which Ms Hawkins believes is a major drawcard. Ms Hawkins said the property market in The Junction would only tighten further as more people looked to buy into this sought-after suburb. - Georgia Osland

October 7 – 13

PICK OF THE WEEK Philomena Friday, SBS, 8.30pm, (2013) Philomena Lee (Dame Judy Dench) is an IrishCatholic who gives birth to a boy conceived out of wedlock and gives him away for adoption in the US. Years later Lee meets Martin Sixsmith (Steve Coogan, above), a reporter with whom she decides to discover her long-lost son, despite a contract that stipulates she isn’t allowed any sort of inquiry about her son’s whereabouts. The notoriously serious Dench and serial comedian Coogan may seem like a mismatched pair, but somehow fit together perfectly.

Friday

The A-Team

The Words Saturday, SBS, 8.35pm, M (2012) This story within a story is cleverly shot. We first meet successful author Clay Hammond (Dennis Quaid) at a reading of his latest novel. The excerpts he reads take us into the world of struggling author Rory (Bradley Cooper, above left), who finds a manuscript and publishes it as his own, finally enjoying great acclaim. Soon after, he is tracked down by the real author (Jeremy Irons, at his best) who shares his heartbreaking tale of romance and loss in Paris in the 1940s that inspired his work.

Saturday, TEN, 9.30pm, M (2010) Pity the fool who isn’t at least slightly intrigued by this highly modernised update of the hit 1980s TV series. A group of disgraced Iraq War veterans (including Liam Neeson, right) strive to clear their names with the US military after their latest clandestine mission turns out to be a trap. Going “rogue”, the mercenaries use their unique talents to try to track down the real culprit. Director Joe Carnahan (Narc) perfectly recaptures the cheesy tone of the original with this bona fide blockbuster.

Jupiter has moved into Libra making the next 12 months a highly sociable time for Hugh. His intellect will be working to its fullest capability and he will only wish to spend time with those who stimulate him mentally, or who are well read and informed. On the career front it is time to be prominent, confident and push forwards. The luck that Jupiter brings his way will not be around for another 12 years. Physically he needs to be more attentive to his sleeping habits and diet.

ARIES: MAR 21 - APR 20

CANCER: JUNE 22 - JUL 22

LIBRA: SEPT 24 - OCT 23

CAPRICORN: DEC 22 - JAN 20

Find a space to dig deep to ask yourself what you want. Luckily, friends will be going out of their way to make you feel appreciated. Their sympathetic gestures and thoughtful messages will make you aware that love and affection are around in ways you haven’t noticed before.

An influx of funds, good news or advantageous deals will give your finances a lift. You need to pay close attention to the details of travel plans or arrangements with a distant relative or friend so they don't come back to bite you.

Happy Birthday Libra! Jupiter is in your sign all year and your good humour is buoyant and your sense of fun is contagious. This is the ideal time to step outside your routines; remember, even though fortune is smiling upon you, you must act positively to reap the rewards.

An unexpected visitor or unusual

TAURUS: APR 21 - MAY 21

SCORPIO: OCT 24 - NOV 22

AQUARIUS: JAN 21 - FEB 19

Mars is in your 9th house and the emphasis is on foreign countries and higher education. It is quite likely before this month is out that you will have booked yourself a trip somewhere exotic and why not? It is the ideal time for bushwalking or visiting sunny climes.

Mars in Capricorn warns that complex financial matters may be stressful, so work through conflicting information and confusing options carefully. The stars are shining on your domestic life; possibly you are entertaining there and while it might be a slight strain, you’ll suddenly decide it’s worthwhile, so push ahead.

GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21

VIRGO: AUG 24 - SEPT 23

SAGITTARIUS: NOV 23 - DEC 21

Mercury in Libra indicates you’ve got your groove back, so it’s time to get out and about to different places, as they will be eye opening and unusual conversations will be informative. The planets also suggest there may be a cash windfall or generous present, and that can't be bad.

Good fortune at work or financially will give you a lift, but watch your spending. Money could gush out on special purchases, impulsive outlays and generous deeds so rein it in. Mars in Capricorn increases your desire for fun, however be careful of burning the candle at both ends.

Your own talents and skills are obvious to everyone you deal with and as you are a generous soul, you will be doing your best to mentor others. A huge task or deadline will stretch your resources at work. Avoid taking it all on your own back, remember to delegate.

LEO: JUL 23 - AUG 23

Mars in Capricorn indicates that you will be celebrating something special with a loved one; it will be exciting, but could be expensive. A reunion or emotional get-together could lead to deep and meaningful exchanges and discoveries. You have a wonderful opportunity to make things happen.

incident on the home front will keep you on your toes. Venus is in Scorpio bringing support from friends and acquaintances, so look forward to some fun times and go out and explore when you can!

Mars is in your 12th house and it is going to be imperative that you make time to rest and relax, otherwise you will suffer from stress-related illnesses. When it comes to tricky personal matters, listen to your heart and intuition, it will guide you in the right direction.

PISCES: FEB 20 - MAR 20 Be ready for a difficult aspect that will set alarm bells ringing. Mercury and Mars are in a difficult aspect and contentious issues with a loved one could suddenly arise. Seeing both sides won't be easy, but it will help you find a positive way forward.

Rebellion is a five-part drama that tells the story of the violent birth of modern Ireland, exploring the emergence of a new state during one of the most disruptive and terrifying periods in history. The drama begins with the outbreak of World War One. As expectations of a short and glorious campaign are dashed, extremism comes to the fore as social stability – the very fabric of life – erodes. How do people react? Some prioritise family loyalties. Others take sides. Motivated by the noblest of ideals or opportunism, some take up arms, prepared to sacrifice everything for the dream of a better society. What is it like to be caught up in such chaotic and violent times?
