From the editor Being someone who cannot function

week, with Kerry Cooper from the Cardiff Sustainable Neighbourhood Group about the quest to save used coffee grounds from landfill to be used, instead, in local community gardens compost, was met with much interest. Up until now, I’ve nary given a thought to where the grounds I absent-mindedly empty into my bin every morning, end up, however after speaking to Kerry, I’ll be making a more concerted effort to put my coffee detritus to better use. I would encourage anyone who is as much a fan of coffee as I am to consider ways that the grounds could be better used around your home – apparently they are also fantastic for cleaning hardwood floors and they work pretty well as a facial exfoliant, too. Even better, why not contact a community make use of your cast-off beans? It’s a simple, yet tangible way to have a positive effect on your community. Turn to page 12 to find out more. news Community demands clarity over Belmont TAFE sale

Member for Swansea Yasmin Catley is standing up for students and staff at Belmont TAFE campus.

he future of Belmont TAFE is still no clearer, leaving students and staff in the lurch. During budget estimates last week, NSW Minister for Skills John Barilaro could not guarantee the campus would not be sold off under statewide reforms to the skills and training sector. When the Opposition pressed him on the matter, Mr Barilaro said he could not rule any campus, or asset, in or out. “What I have said is that if there is an opportunity to recycle any asset of TAFE that isn’t a part of today’s needs or future needs for the growth of the organisation, we would look at it,” Mr Barilaro said. “If there is divestment, we will make that clear to the public.” Member for Swansea Yasmin Catley said the minister missed an opportunity to be open

with the community. “Our community is worried about the future of Belmont TAFE campus and today the minister squandered his chance to provide any future certainty to the students and families who rely on Belmont TAFE,” Ms Catley said. Belmont TAFE is one of 15 in the Hunter portfolio, and one of four the government has indicated it may sell and privatise services at, along with Glendale, Muswellbrook and Scone campuses. Belmont is the only Hunter TAFE campus that offers fast-tracked learning in electrical studies, which, for mature-aged students Ben Wall and Anthony Wolfl, its potential closure would mean spending longer training at another campus further away, while for others, like 18-yearold Haydon Calder, it would mean sacrificing their studies altogether.

Haydon is completing a Certificate III in Employment and Training, a job-ready course that also prepares students for tertiary education. After dropping out of high school in Dubbo two years ago, Haydon now lives in Swansea. If the Belmont TAFE campus was closed, Haydon would not be able to continue his studies. “The only way I would be able to get the same education would be if I were waking up at 4am every day,” he said. Haydon said he feared Belmont TAFE’s closure because he knew it was his “only chance”. “After having difficulties going through the regular stream of schooling, I still want to make something of myself and knowing that Belmont TAFE is facing closure is a really scary thought.” - Georgia Osland

Strong showing for Labor in elections The strong performance of the Labor party locally in the July federal election was reflected in the results of the council elections in the Cessnock and Lake Macquarie LGAs, last week. Incumbent Cessnock Mayor Bob Pynsent will be returned to the position after claiming 45.31% (correct at the time of printing) of the first preference vote while Lake Macquarie has a new mayor in Kay Fraser who is currently sitting on 45.06% of the first preference vote behind Liberal mayoral candidate Jason Pauling on 20.23%. Council elections in Newcastle, Maitland and Port Stephens have been postponed to next year after decisions have been made on proposed council mergers.

New app to report transport complaints

a share in $3,000 of prizes

Dirty train carriages, late services and safety incidents – commuters can now report it all through Transport For NSW’s Feedback2Go mobile app. Transport Minister Andrew Constance launched the free app earlier this week, which allows commuters to snap photos and send complaints about trains, buses, ferries, light rail and roads. “We’re not frightened of complaints and this app is an easy option for customers to share their thoughts,” Mr Constance said. Member for Wallsend Sonia Hornery welcomed the app, but again flagged the need for greater police presence on Hunter trains to fend off crime, as Newcastle Weekly reported last month. Feedback2Go is available for download via the iTunes store and Google Play.

Woodlands Lodge Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator Janine Warne helps residents Dawn Lyon (left) and Fred Rigler (right) decorate their shoes.

Art competition generates dementia awareness Residents at West Wallsend aged care facility Woodlands Lodge have unleashed their creative side for Dementia Awareness Month. They’ve busted out the craft and glue to decorate shoes - some donated, some collected from op

shops - for the Uniting Protestant Association facility’s inaugural Walk a Day in My Shoes art competition. Residents at the lodge have been working on decorating their shoes for the past two months, and some have even started from scratch

and made shoes out of clay. Other aged care facilities in the region have also participated; some of which have engaged local school students to pair up with the residents to help them with the project. On Tuesday 20 September, all entries will be judged by Newcastle Art Society at Woodlands Lodge, with prizes and trophies up for grabs across seven categories. The event is open to residents’ relatives as well as the general community, which will be able to view the display on the day. Alzheimer’s Australia will also attend the event to provide information on strategies for dealing with dementia. Woodlands Lodge Leisure and Lifestyle Coordinator Janine Warne is the creative mastermind behind the event. Janine said the competition – the idea for which she got

from a New York store that had engaged local artists for a similar project for its grand opening – provided empowerment through connectivity. “Everybody has the right to be creative and express themselves how they’d like to,” she said. “It brings the residents and community together, enabling [the residents] to feel a part of something greater than themselves and gives purpose to the activity of working towards a meaningful project.” Janine said the initiative also helped generate awareness and understanding of those living with dementia, a disorder of the brain that affects cognitive function, behaviour and memory. Walk a Day in My Shoes will run from 10am to 12pm, with morning tea provided. For more information on dementia, visit fightdementia.org.au - Georgia Osland

Hunter region police tech boost New mobile tablet devices, designed to simplify the process of issuing infringements for frontline police officers, will be rolled out to Hunter Region local area commands over the next few months. Nine hundred devices from the Moblie Policing Program have already been delivered to LAC’s across NSW with a further 1300 to be issued – of which seven will go to the Central Hunter LAC, 10 to Hunter Valley LAC, 17 to Lake Macquarie LAC, 28 to Newcastle LAC and 10 to Port Stephens LAC. Parliamentary secretary for the Hunter Scot Macdonald said the new technology would simplify the process of issuing infringements so officers didn’t have to return to the station. Homelessness is becoming more prevalent in the Hunter, new data suggests. A survey of attendees at Hunter Homeless Connect Day in August found significant changes in the demographics and overall number of people doing it tough in the region. Attendance rates at the annual one-stopshop open day for homelessness services and resources had increased by 10%, or 1000 people, year-on-year. Of those who attended, almost 20% were classified as homeless – either sleeping rough, sleeping in cars, couch surfing or staying in hostels or refuges. The survey, conducted by Hunter TAFE, also found the number of women seeking help had increased by 25% over the past two years. Women experiencing relationship breakdowns or fleeing domestic violence account for 31% of the overall homelessness population. Indigenous Australians continue to be over-represented among those at risk, with 21% of Hunter Homeless Connect Day attendees identifying as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, despite comprising just 2.6% of the Hunter’s population. The top reasons given for attending the event were: accessing health checks and other services (13%), free haircuts (12.5%), clothing and blankets (11%) and seeking housing (7%). - Georgia Osland

Tegan Rossiter from Winding Creek Espresso Bar, giving Kerry Cooper from the Cardiff Sustainable Neighborhood Group the weekly haul of used coffee grounds.

offee. Most of us drink it, yet few of us give much thought to where the beverages’ byproduct, the grounds, end up. Thankfully, one barista has given it some thought and, with the help of the Cardiff Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, is diverting around 50-kilograms per week of used coffee grounds from landfill to enriching the compost and gardens at the Waratah/ Mayfield and Warners Bay Community Gardens. Tegan Rossiter, who works at the Winding Creek Espresso Bar in Cardiff, wanted to do her bit for the environment by collecting used grounds and contacted the Cardiff Sustainable Neighbourhood Group, and they were more than happy to get on board. “It’s a great initiative and one that we’re more than happy to be

a part of,” group member Kerry Cooper told Newcastle Weekly. Kerry, who also works at the Waratah/Mayfield Community Garden has enlisted the help of the Oily May Café in Mayfeld, the Oily George in Georgetown, the Winding Creek Espresso Bar and the Mosh Pit Retro Café in Cardiff. “We’ve been doing it for about a month now and it just seems to keep growing, which is great,” she said. “We’ve now got plenty of coffee grinds for both the Waratah/Mayfield and Warners Bay community gardens which are really good for compost and spreading around strawberries to keep the snails away. You can even use coffee grounds to grow mushrooms which is also something worthy of looking into.” - Stephen Bisset

5 Tbsp fish sauce 2 Tbsp white wine 300g rice noodles 16 raw tiger prawns, shelled and deveined (keep shells and heads for stock) 2 pak choi, sliced into strips 70g bean sprouts

1 Tbsp sunflower oil

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

200g piece of smoked streaky bacon, cut into lardons

Method

4 spring onions, trimmed, white and green parts separated and sliced 2 red chillies, deseeded and thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, peeled and finely chopped

To make the prawn stock, heat the oil in a sauté pan, then add the garlic and cook until golden. Add the prawns (plus the extra shells and heads from the shelled prawns for the soup) and cook until they turn orangey red all over. Crush the prawns with the back of a spoon,

then add the water and bring to the boil. Add a good pinch of salt and simmer for 25 minutes. Strain through a sieve into a bowl and set aside. To make the soup, heat the oil in a large saucepan. When it is hot, add the bacon, white spring onions, chillies and garlic. Sweat for 5 minutes, stirring every so often. Now pour in the prawn stock, bring to a simmer and cook gently for 10 minutes. Stir in the fish sauce and wine. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Tip the rice noodles into the pan and cook for 3 minutes. Add the prawns and pak choi and cook for a further 2 minutes until they turn orangey red. Finally, add the green spring onions and bean sprouts.

Stellar line-up at 48 Watt While there’s no denying that we’re pretty spoilt for choice, here in Newcastle, when it comes to great venues, one of the newest kids on the block, 48 Watt St, has unveiled an impressive lineup for its ‘Live at 48 Watt St’ series. Kicking off the series this weekend (Saturday 17 September) will be Sydney-based troubadour Patrick James (pictured) who is currently causing quite a fuss with his debut long player Outlier and its singles California Song, Bugs and Kings and Queens. Following on from brilliant Hunter shows as part of her Deep Dark Savage Heart album tour earlier this year, Hunter bred songwriter Melody Pool will be taking to the 48 Watt stage on Thursday 20 October and, this time around, she’ll be bringing Melbourne-based troubadour Peter Bibby along for the ride for what promises to be an intimate and heartfelt performance. Henry Wagons rounds out the impressive lineup with a solo performance on Friday 4 November. Fresh off the plane from five weeks touring North America on the back of his new solo album After What I Did Last Night..., Henry’s fingers are nimble, his voice is limber and his memory bank is full of many new stories of big skies and the open road. If that’s not enough, a pop up bar will feature a variety of yummy beverages including beers by Central Coast brewers, Six String Brewing Co. and Mini Pinoy Grill will be serving their delicious Filipino fusion cuisine from the kitchen at each even. TAKE A RUN AT THE SUN

Hot on the heels of their biggest European tour to date, Cronulla-bred surf-rock, skadub groovers Caravana Sun will be making a welcome return to Newcastle, later this month, with album number three, Guerilla Club, under their collective belt. Since forming in 2009, Caravana Sun have been gaining quite the reputation, both here and overseas as one live unit to be reckoned with. Blending ‘smooth-as-honey’ vocals with some irresistibly danceable and bouncing ‘Gypsy ska’ vibes, these guys certainly know how to fill a dancefloor. While the band’s previous two albums, Aya and Rising Falling concentrated on reproducing the Caravana Sun live sound, this time around, with the help of Eskimo Joe’s Joel Quartermain in the producer’s chair, there is much more studio experimentation going on. “Our last records were more about a live sound but, we really wanted to challenge ourselves with this one, so we kind of approached it as a separate

entity to what we do on stage,” he said. “Joel, who is just fantastic, wanted to make it a bit more groove-based in the vein of the Gorillaz and the Specials, so it’s a bit of an evolution for us – but you have to evolve. “I really think it’s our best work and it’s opened up a lot of doors to more creative avenues that we’re keen to explore in the future.” Having just come off a mammoth European tour and with a 21-date Australian tour about to kick off, you’d be forgiven for thinking that

Caravana Sun would be keen to take some time off to reflect. However, that would be to underestimate the band’s work ethic. “After this Australian tour, we might have a little bit of time off over Christmas, but we’re definitely heading back over to Europe in the new year. You’ve just got to keep plugging away.” Catch Caravana Sun when they play at the Small Ballroom, Islington on Thursday 22 September. - Stephen Bisset

Saturday, 24 September 2016 The Marvin Gaye Experience is a tribute to a true soul legend, celebrating 3 decades since the passing of one of the most talented, singer/ songwriters in the history of the Motown era.

LAKESIDE

DINING AT ITS BEST

If intimate lakeside dining is what you’re after, then you can’t go past Jessie’s On The Water at Valentine Bowling Club. With the self-proclaimed “best view in Lake Macquarie”, the bistro is in a prime location, says head chef Garry Fisher (pictured). “You sit anywhere in the club and you can see the lake,” he said. Having recently undergone renovations to its kitchen and dining area, the bistro now offers alfresco dining from which to enjoy the view with your meal. Open seven days a week, Jessie’s serves classic bistro meals plus a wide range of a la carte dishes, from fresh seafood and pasta to steaks and schnitzels. Meals range in price from $10 for your classic bistro meals to $20 to $30 for a la carte dishes. With vegetarian and gluten free options, chef Fisher says there’s something for everyone.

Every few months the kitchen freshens up its menu, but rest assured, the crowd favourites will always remain. Jessie’s also caters for functions such as weddings, birthdays and anniversaries in the upstairs function room, which seats 110 people. From finger food to sit-down menus – they do it all. Jessie’s On The Water at Valentine Bowling Club is located at Valentine Crescent, Valentine. The bistro is open for lunch between 12pm to 2pm, while dinner service runs from 5.30pm to 8pm. - Georgia Osland

Garden trends are still being dominated by succulents, cactus and grasses. Glossy magazines feature such plants among rocks, white or black, or as an indoor plant, often displayed in a clear glass bowl, highlighted with polished stones. September 16 – 22

PICK OF THE WEEK Paul Saturday, PRIME7, 10.30pm, MA15+ (2011) Simon Pegg (far left) and Nick Frost (left) team up once again in a sci-fi/ comedy vehicle that’s not quite up to the level of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. The Brits play sci-fi geeks who stumble across a real-life alien (voiced by Seth Rogen) while on a roadtrip across the US. Some clever jabs at fanboys and a few sharp in-jokes keep this afloat, but the direction of Greg Mottola (Superbad) is a bit flat when compared to the brilliance of Pegg and Frost’s previous team-ups.

Friday ABC (ch 2)

Pride & Prejudice

Revolutionary Road Monday, SBS, 12.25am, M (2008) Kate Winslet reunites with her Titanic paramour Leonardo DiCaprio (left, with Winslet) for this sumptuous 1950s period drama. The pair enter emotionally troubled waters as Frank and April Wheeler, a couple whose marriage is foundering on the rocks. Director Sam Mendes covers the same themes of suburban stagnation to his biting satire American Beauty. Winslet is peerless in her ability to simultaneously convey maturity and naivety, while DiCaprio’s boyish looks make it easy to accept Frank’s adolescent attitude.

7MATE (ch 63)

Friday, ELEVEN, 8.30pm, G (2005) This adaptation stars Keira Knightley (right) as the headstrong Elizabeth and Matthew Macfadyen as the dashing but snobbish Mr Darcy. Purist fans of Colin Firth’s famous stint as Darcy in the BBC mini-series may feel disappointed with this corner-cutting adaptation from Joe Wright (Atonement), but there are several saving graces. Knightley’s tomboyish charm sits perfectly with the part, Elizabeth’s four sisters are a delight, and Brenda Blethyn steals the show as the know-it-all mother. Gorgeous photography and Dario Marianelli’s score top it off splendidly.

Jada needs to stem any tendency to get caught up in other people's affairs or she could become a scapegoat in a complex situation. Her natural curiosity is part of her charm, but it can be misinterpreted as a need for involvement. Jada should watch from the sidelines but refuse to become a key player in an intense game. Jupiter is encouraging her to use her intuition and to dig around in the background before making decisions.

in the

18 September 1971

CANCER: JUNE 22 - JUL 22

LIBRA: SEPT 24 - OCT 23

CAPRICORN: DEC 22 - JAN 20

The 17 September Full Moon advises you to avoid self-sabotage by not interfering in the routine of others. Your motive may be a genuine desire to help, but your suggestions will not be welcomed by everyone. With Jupiter in your 7th house, romance is high on your agenda.

The Full Moon on 17 September warns you to avoid taking gambles with your hard-earned cash and being outspoken and tactless, as this will only hurt others. The last thing you need is an argument at home; there seems to be trouble brewing over something so trivial it’s laughable.

The Full Moon on the 17th indicates that matters at work are likely to be muddling and confusing, so give yourself plenty of time to sort things out. If you need help ask for it! Healthwise, an old complaint may resurface and will need resolving once and for all.

The Full Moon on 17 September indicates a need to avoid being caught up in a drama involving close friends and siblings, as all your good intentions will come to nothing. With Jupiter in your 10th house, this should be a truly positive time professionally.

TAURUS: APR 21 - MAY 21

LEO: JUL 23 - AUG 23

SCORPIO: OCT 24 - NOV 22

AQUARIUS: JAN 21 - FEB 19

The Full Moon on the 17th indicates a need to be careful of how you deal with friends. Avoid being egotistical, as this will only make you unpopular. Be patient and stay calm even if you disagree with someone. The past exerts a powerful influence as Uranus journeys through your 12th house.

The Full Moon on the 17th warns you to be wary of being hypersensitive and imagining hurt or offence where none exists. Don't give into the need for excessive boasting in order to get recognition from others. Jupiter sextiles Mars and your dynamic personality is shining through.

The 17 September Full Moon indicates a need to be careful of being manipulated into buying things, so avoid slick sales reps. Mars is in your 2nd house of finances and longterm objectives. Opportunities for advancement and recognition for past efforts surround you.

The 17 September Full Moon indicates your value system is going through an overhaul; it’s time to let go of aspects of your life that are no longer working. With Jupiter in your romance sector, now is your chance to show that special someone how much they mean.

GEMINI: MAY 22 - JUNE 21

VIRGO: AUG 24 - SEPT 23

SAGITTARIUS: NOV 23 - DEC 21

PISCES: FEB 20 - MAR 20

The Full Moon on the 17th warns you to avoid stepping on the egos of bosses and work colleagues and to avoid allowing insecurities control you. If you've made arrangements with a client or colleague, be sure to follow through. Jupiter is in Libra, so your intelligence shines.

The 17 September Full Moon is in your partnership zone, so avoid procrastinating and refusing to face the facts where certain relationships are concerned. Avoid being jealous and envious of others as this is only going to create separations. Be sure to take some ‘me’ time.

The Full Moon on the 17th indicates unexpected domestic or property problems are likely to be a little bit messy. Unfortunately you’re also going to have a less than sympathetic family unit to deal with. Keep your cool and once it's all sorted, take some time out.

The Full Moon is in your sign on the 17th and you are likely to be extremely emotional and hypersensitive. There will be a temptation to overindulge. You must resist any temptation to drink and drive or you are likely to be caught by the law.

The Nepean River at Penrith in Western Sydney is a spectacular attraction, so it’s not surprising it offers so many water-based recreational activities, such as the Nepean Belle Paddle wheeler, which tours the river. For action-packed adventure, try aqua golf; water-skiing at Cable Wake Park; enjoy a Jetpack Water Adventure or raft the waves at White Water Stadium. With so much on offer, it’s no wonder Penrith was awarded the host city for the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games rowing and canoeing programs.

You can enjoy all this and more from the luxury of Mercure Penrith. Discover a stylish, relaxing and affordable gateway to Western Sydney. Facilities include gymnasium, guest lounge, outdoor swimming pool and more. Visit mercurepenrith.com.au
