From the editor This week, journalist Georgia Osland caught up with Seaham-based model Jasmine Farlow, who recently won her first pageant title as Miss Continents Australia 2016. While much of what we know about pageants comes from train-wreck reality television like Toddlers and Tiaras, Honey Boo Boo and the like, Jasmine's story is refreshing in that, for her, it's not just about the glitz and glamour. "People see the diamantes and the dresses and then they think it’s all for the tiara, which, let’s face it, it’s a nice little sparkly icing on the cake but there’s a lot more behind it," Jasmine says. To that end, Jasmine has raised much-needed funds for ovarian cancer charity Teal Wings of Hope as well as starting her own, Newcastlebased fundraising initiative Newcastle Suspended, which raised money for people affected by the April 2015 storms and continues to generate support for the Hunter region's homeless. Jasmine's story is quite inspirational and you can read all about it on page 24. So, it seems that we are finally climbing out of the nadir that was winter with sunny days becoming more and more frequent. Here's hoping that we're not in for a long, hot summer. ember for Paterson Meryl Swanson is calling for urgent blood testing for Williamtown residents affected by the RAAF base chemical contamination. Ms Swanson is applying pressure to the government to act now, in light of the Department of Defence’s OffSite Human Health Risk Assessment of the contaminated area. The report, released last week, confirms restrictions already put in place by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) in the ‘red zone’ around the RAAF base, where high concentrations of perfluorinated compounds have been found. Typically used as hydraulic fluid in the aviation industry and commonly found in firefighting foam, the most common of these chemicals are PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonate) and PFOA (perfluorooctanoic acid) – both of which have been found in ground and surface water in Williamtown.

Aqueous film-forming foam, which is now known to contain PFOS and PFOA, was used at the RAAF base for fire training and emergency response from 1976. Over time, chemicals have worked their way through the soil to the groundwater underneath the site. Now, as a precaution, affected residents are encouraged not to drink or use groundwater when showering; not to eat eggs or drink milk produced in the advisory area; not to eat fish caught in the area; and to moderate consumption of home-grown fruit, vegetables, meat and poultry. Fishing areas in Fullerton Cove and Tilligerry Creek are closed. The NSW EPA is continuing to investigate the area, while the NSW government is working with the defence department to expedite and undertake contaminated site assessments in and around the area. But Ms Swanson says an

independent taskforce should be overseeing the investigations. “[The defence department] created the problem; they shouldn’t be part of the solution,” she said. While the Australian Environmental Health Standing Committee says there is no conclusive evidence that PFOS and PFOA cause any illness – including cancer – in humans, and that blood testing is of little value in assessing health effects, Ms Swanson said blood tests should be carried out just to be safe. “We didn’t know the risk of things like tobacco and asbestos until it was too late,” she said. “Experts don’t even know how to interpret [the findings so far]. I believe people deserve to know what’s in their systems. Through no fault of their own they’ve found themselves in an impossible situation. It’s about doing the right thing by these people.” - Georgia Osland

hadow Minister for the Hunter Sonia Hornery has criticised the Baird government’s move to introduce legislation to shut down the greyhound racing industry directly to the Upper House. The government has bypassed the Legislative Assembly altogether, introducing the bill to the Upper House as an Urgent Notice of Motion. Ms Hornery has bolstered support for the state greyhound racing industry – particularly in

Maitland – by helping to circulate a petition against the ban, which drew 37,000 signatures and was presented to the government earlier this month. She says bypassing the Legislative Assembly will deny the community its right to a proper, considered and deliberate debate. “By not allowing proper discussion an entire industry - an entire community - is being ignored and not given a fair chance,” Ms Hornery said.

Land exchange in Cardiff Transport for NSW has sold back land to Lake Macquarie council it bought in August 2015 to complete vital upgrade works in Cardiff. Given that part of the land upon which the state transport body intended to build a new bus shelter belonged to the council, Transport for NSW determined the quickest way to complete the works on part 248 Main Road was to acquire the land from the council for $22,000. Now that the works – which also included a designated ‘kiss and ride’ area and interchange – have been completed, Transport for NSW has transferred the land back to the council for $1. The land will now be classified as Operational Land, under which the council is responsible for its ongoing maintenance.

news Local government elections for some here’s no reprieve from voters’ fatigue for Lake Macquarie and Cessnock residents, who will be heading back to the polls next month, this time for local government elections. The elections, to be held on 10 September, will decide the two cities’ councillors for the next four years. Residents in Newcastle, Port Stephens, Maitland and Dungog, however, will not be required to vote – yet. Elections in those areas are temporarily on hold, while the future of those councils hangs in the balance. The state government is seeking to merge Newcastle council with Port Stephens, and Maitland council with Dungog, based on recommendations by

the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal in its Fit for the Future report, released last year. The report deemed Newcastle council “not fit” for the future, based on scale and capacity, and recommended a merger with Port Stephens council, which was deemed fit to standalone. int-sized powerhouse Stephanie Egan is ready to make her mark. At just 10 years old, Stephanie is the fastest female cross country runner in her age group in New South Wales. Tomorrow, Friday 19 August, she heads off to the National Cross Country Championships in Canberra’s Stromlo Forest Park for three days. Stephanie, from Thornton, qualified for nationals at the NSW PSSA state cross country carnival in Sydney’s Eastern Creek on 22 July. She completed the twokilometre run in eight minutes and 11 seconds, securing her spot at nationals. She said it was slower than her

Loyal partner receives rare honour She’s been described by those around her as “the best Rotarian who isn’t a Rotarian”. East Maitland’s Carol Coffey last week became Australia’s eighteenth recipient (and the first in Rotary District 9670) of Rotary

International’s Rotarian Spouse/ Partner Service Award. Only 100 awards are given out in the world each year. As the title suggests, the award honours spouses and partners of Rotary club members who have showed

commitment to Rotary through exemplary humanitarian service. In other words, Carol is an unswervingly loyal right-hand man to her husband, Brian, who has been a member of East Maitland Rotary Club for 16 years, and club president twice. Over the years, Carol has been heavily involved in various Rotary programs, without actually having been a member of a Rotary club. She has opened her home to overseas students visiting on the Youth Exchange program, counselled them and chaperoned a group of inbound students once on Rotary’s famous Capricorn Ramble trip around Australia. Carol sat on the Youth Exchange Committee for five years, and enjoys helping younger people in any way she can. In 2011, after a personal vacation to Vanuatu with her husband, Carol was inspired to help a young

boy with club feet, whom she met overseas. Through Rotary, she and Brian brought Charlie Nurak home and hosted the young boy and his mother for seven months, while Charlie underwent operations at John Hunter Hospital to have his club feet corrected. “To see the mother grow was just as exciting as seeing Charlie walk,” Carol said, “My heart was burning; I was so proud.” Carol has also helped deliver linen and medical aid overseas through ROMAC – Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children. She has received two Paul Harris Fellows, where each time $1000 was donated in her name to The Rotary Foundation, and last year received a Neville Arthur Award, a pseudo Rotary of the Year award. But Carol says her most recent award is her proudest achievement yet. “I feel empowered,” she said. - Georgia Osland

While wine and food tours have long been de rigueur in the Hunter Region, a group of independent Newcastle art galleries are taking that idea and applying it to the prolific Newcastle art scene. Independent Galleries Newcastle will be kicking off its first Roaming Art tour, later this month, which will see art fanciers hop aboard Newcastle’s Famous Tram to visit three Newcastle galleries vGallery 139 on Beaumont Street, Timeless Textiles on Hunter Street and Art Systems Wickham. People will also have the chance to gain insight into what makes the small galleries tick, the processes of exhibiting artists as well as picking up some historical tidbits about Newcastle. “The whole idea came about because I had had quite a few requests from people asking about the smaller galleries in Newcastle,” tour organiser Ahn

BOTANICAL ARTIST

Newcastle-based illustrator has had one of her works accepted into one of the most prestigious botanical art exhibitions in the United States. Edgeworth’s Lauren SahuKhan, who works under the name Lauren May SK, will see her highly detailed work Mr Banks exhibited at the 15th International Exhibition for Botanical Art and Illustration in Pittsburgh. “It is really exciting as it’s in the top-three biggest botanical exhibitions in the world,” she said. “The other, Botanica in Sydney, I was lucky enough to exhibit at earlier this year and I’ve also just found out that I am eligible to exhibit at the Royal Horticultural Society botanical exhibition in London’s Kew Gardens within the

next five years so, it’s also very exciting that, soon, I’ll be able to tick off the big three. “It has been a patience game but, as an artist, I’m used to being patient before I see results.” For the Pittsburgh exhibition, Lauren submitted one graphite drawing and two watercolour paintings for consideration, with the drawing, Mr Banks, getting the final nod from selectors who described the work as having “an amazing dynamism and ferociousness about it.” She will also travel to Pittsburgh in October to attend the annual meeting and conference of the American Society of Botanical Artists. Lauren, who studied Natural History Illustration at the University of Newcastle, said she

couldn’t imagine doing anything else, despite the fact that her detailed illustrations can take anywhere from 10 to 90 hours to complete. “It’s never been a question for me,” she laughed.

“Since I was little, I’ve always loved to draw and paint and while I do like other mediums I’ve always been attracted the realism and the challenge of botanical illustration.” - Stephen Bisset

record since his iconic band The Saints released their incendiary debut record I’m Stranded in 1977, the prolific songwriter said he hadn’t really been keeping track. “That number was something my agent told me about – honestly, I had no idea,” he laughed. “In fact, there are about a dozen albums I have done which weren’t included on the list as they were mainly instrumental or covers albums.” While he is still constantly asked about possible Saints and Laughing Clowns reunions, Kuepper said he always looked to the future. “People still love those bands and they still want to see that stuff and I’m extremely touched by it,” he said. “However, the Saints was 40 years ago. I will say, though that TYM Guitars in Brisbane launched a Saints distortion pedal to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first album and the sound of that thing is just phenomenal. “As soon as I clicked it on at the launch event and played a couple of chords, I thought ‘hmm, maybe I wouldn’t mind another Saints show’ because that pedal captured the sound so well.” Catch Ed Kuepper at Lizotte’s Lambton on Friday 19 August. - Stephen Bisset

ormer Saint, Laughing Clown and one-time Bad Seed Ed Kuepper will be back in our neck of the woods this weekend, giving Hunter punters an up-close and intimate look at his latest album Lost Cities. The album, Kuepper’s 50th (give or take a few) is very much a solo affair, with the iconic songwriter tackling all instruments himself is a lilting atmospheric affair – something that came out of a spot of writer’s block. “I had been experiencing a little bit of writer’s block and I figured that the best way to break it was to announce a tour of new material, with no new material written – that definitely helped break the slump,” Kuepper said of the album’s origins. “I was also looking to do something more sonically different to what I had done before – a little more atmospheric. Also, the main thing I wanted to achieve was I wanted this album to be one that you could listen to as a whole, rather than a series of separate tracks. I was very conscious of the fact that, in the past, a lot of what I have done is quite extremely diverse sonically so I wanted this one to be a bit more cohesive.” While Lost Cities officially marks Kuepper’s 50th

NAS is an artist-run, not-for profit centre completely run by volunteers. NAS relies on the support of the community, in buying artworks, and sponsors, to keep their events going. This year’s prize was sponsored by Hall and Willcox, Newcastle Art Gallery Society, DR Paul Beath Dental NEAP, The Lass O’Gowrie, Newcastle Herald, Eckersley’s Art and Craft, Crowne Plaza Newcastle, Tambourlaine Wine and Ann Sutherland. The prize categories include painting, works on paper, photo media, 3D media, and, for the first year ever, 4D media. Entries will be judged by Wendy Sharpe, Dani Marti and Ahn Wells. Another addition to the program is the NAS Student Art Prize. Jordan Fardell, this year’s co-director, who is also a high school art teacher, was passionate about ensuring that the students of the area were well represented.

With entrants from years 10, 11 and 12, every single entry will be on display on the night before being judged by Bridget Uren. “Each entry will be hung, because we find it’s really important to encourage young artists. They all deserve to be rewarded for their bravery; it’s a celebration of them,” Newcastle Emerging Artist Prize co-director Melissa Bull said. For the year 12 winners, they will get the chance to have a series of mentor classes with an established artist in their chosen area. This year is the last year that the Emerging Art Prize will be held in the Parry Street location; however this does not ring the end of NAS. “It gives us an opportunity to change a few things if we need to. We’re looking to change the prize and make it bigger and better,” Melissa added. The opening night and judging will be from 6pm on 20 August, with the exhibition continuing until 28 August. - Amy Theodore

Fortuna Court ticks all the boxes While clubs and Asian-inspired menus go hand-in-hand in this region, Fortuna Court at Belmont Bowling Club is fast-becoming one of the standout examples of quality Asian fare in the region. Having only been in the kitchen at Belmont for a little while, head chef Kevin Chong (pictured) has brought a wealth of experience to a menu that seamlessly mixes Chinese fare with some traditional Australian flourishes. Being lucky enough to dine there on Friday night, I was truly impressed with a Mongolian beef that packed a massive flavor punch as well as the perennial classic honey chicken – a dish that Chef Kevin presented as crisp, fresh and with just the right balance of sweetness. While there’s a lot to write home about on the Chinese menu, the western side of things – grilled chicken, fish fillets, steak and schnitzels definitely deserves a look, as well. In a world full of fast, fried foods that contain endless lists of ingredients and additives, Vita Café and restaurant in Wangi Wangi is giving things a fresh spin. Running for 12-and-a-half years, the menu is abundant with not only fresh, but also locally-sourced ingredients. “All the locals bring in their excess produce, herbs, vegetables, fruits and figs, and we use them either in the pastries or in the dinner menu. The local school also has a fabulous garden,” Vita owner Michelle AustenTabone, said. Every morning, Hunter Valleytrained chefs bake French and Danish pastries completely from scratch inhouse, with the lunch menu featuring gourmet brioche burgers and authentic stone-baked Italian pizzas.

The Italian goodness continues on during dinner on Thursday and Friday nights, which offers up a variety homemade pastas, gnoochi and pizza, with a beer or wine for only $20. If you can’t get enough of what Vita has to offer during the week or are simply too busy to see what all the fuss is about, Vita is now also open Sundays. “The special thing about Sunday is that we do an artisan breakfast all made from scratch. We have homemade cream corn, homemade chorizo, spicy baked beans, skillet baked eggs and beautiful fluffy pancakes with homemade honey comb,” Michelle said. All of this goodness can either be enjoyed inside looking out at the beautiful waterfront view, or outside in the fresh air. “It’s relaxing and casual, but you’re getting good quality food,” Michelle said. Behind the glitz and glamour, there’s a young lady who is passionate about making a difference in her community. Seaham’s Jasmine Farlow has been competing in pageants since she was 23, and earlier this year earned her first title as Miss Continents Australia 2016. But despite her time in the spotlight, the now 27-year-old, who grew up in Forster, has remained focused on what she considers important.

Through MAQuest, the Australian agency that directs a number of pageants throughout the country, Jasmine has played a vital role in raising thousands of dollars for the agency’s charity, Teal Wings of Hope. The charity aims to raise awareness of ovarian cancer in an effort to save lives through early detection of the disease. “There’s a lot to [pageantry] that people don’t actually see,” Jasmine said, “The TV shows show the glamour of pageants but you don’t actually see the other side of it, where all these girls are going out every week, fundraising for charities, hosting events, making appearances, talking to their communities, and actually volunteering. “Instead, people see the diamantes and the dresses and then they think it’s all for the tiara, which, let’s face it, it’s a nice little sparkly icing on the cake but there’s a lot more behind it.” Like many MAQuest pageant competitors, Jasmine doesn’t just 24

raise money for Teal Wings of Hope. As well as supporting the charity through local and national events (the latter of which raised $10,000 last year - a collaborative effort by MAQuest pageant competitors around Australia), Jasmine started her own, Newcastle-based community initiative in 2014 called Newcastle Suspended. Last year during the April storms, Jasmine and a few other pageant girls raised $600 through a raffle at a Newcastle pub to buy food and supplies to distribute to people whose homes had been lost or damaged. The organisation also works to support the Hunter’s homeless. It’s quite a different path Jasmine has found herself on, given that when she was 17 and fresh out of high school, she was hell-bent on becoming an actress. She took herself to a Sydneybased agency, where she was told she would do better in modelling. “I often wonder what would have happened if I’d have stood up for what I wanted; I wasn’t very forthright,” she said. “But I like the path it put me on.” Jasmine travelled to Las Vegas in May to compete in the Miss Continents pageant against women from all over the world. She had already been crowned Miss Continents Australia right here in Newcastle, at Belmont 16ft Sailing Club, before she left for the pageant where she placed in the top 10. Jasmine had just finished competing in her fourth year

in Miss Galaxy Australia when the international director of Miss Continents contacted her to take part in the Las Vegas pageant. Jasmine will hold the Miss Continents Australia title for the next year, and says during that time, she plans to focus on her swimwear and pageant wear label, JF Designs. She designs and produces all garments by herself by hand. One of Jasmine’s national costumes earned Miss Teen Universe Australia sixth place in a pageant in Guatemala earlier this month. But for all the things going on in Jasmine’s life, a saying by her mum, Suzanne, reminds her to stay grounded. “My mum always said it’s not about your looks because eventually they’re going to fade and all you’re going to be left with is what’s underneath. - Georgia Osland

For the Newcastle Weekly photoshoot, Jasmine styled her hair loosely with a VS hair Sassoon curling wand. When competing in pageants, she uses hairspray liberally to keep her hair in place, but for everyday wear, she prefers to let it fall naturally. However, when it comes to deciding between curls or straight hair, Jasmine almost always opts for curls, at least for formal events. Straight hair is a no-go, particularly if you don’t want your outfit to fall flat. For fine hair, Jasmine recommends using extensions to give volume. Jasmine applied her own makeup for the make Newcastle Weekly shoot. She used a combination of her favourite go-to brands, up Napoleon Perdis and MAC. Start with the Napoleon Foundation Stick, which can be used sparingly for everyday wear, or liberally for extra coverage. Jasmine also recommends a primer underneath your foundation for even coverage. Maybelline powder finish completes the look. For oily skin, Jasmine recommends the stick foundation and compact powder combination over a liquid foundation. When applying eyeliner and mascara, Jasmine warns not to isolate coverage to top or bottom lids and lashes.

Apply to top and bottom, as top-only application can make your eyes look heavy, and bottom-only coverage gives the illusion you have no eyelashes. MAC eyeshadows and blushes are perfect for adding colour, Jasmine says. For the lips, use two tones – a lighter colour in the centre and a darker one around the edge – to make the lips pop. Blend and add lip gloss for extra shine. When choosing a gown for a formal event, Jasmine says to pick something that style matches your skintone. The emerald green dress Jasmine wore for the Newcastle Weekly shoot works because she has darker skin. However, if you have lighter features, a white dress will make you look washed out. Choose a statement piece that won’t overshadow you. Jasmine says you want people to remember the person in the dress, more than the dress itself. The same thing goes for shoes and jewellery; don’t let it outshine your personality. Jasmine’s rule of thumb is to steer away from black shoes and wedges. “Black shoes are distracting and wedges are so chunky a lot of people can’t walk in them properly. They may be comfortable but all you can see is stomping,” she said. And, if you choose to wear high heels, make sure you can walk in them without too much effort.

Rising house prices and family appeal: Fletcher has it all

I

f you haven’t driven through Fletcher in the last two years, you might get a bit of a shock the next time you do. Once regarded as desolate bushland out the back of Wallsend, the suburb is now booming, with new housing developments and infrastructure being built as fast as the demand for property is rising. Century 21 Novocastrian real estate agent Chad Dunn says while the median house price in Fletcher is around $592,000, that figure is on the rise. In his experience, houses currently on the market are sitting around the $600,000 to $680,000 mark, with the highest sale in the area $810,000 in the Outlook estate. And they’re selling like hotcakes. The average time a house spends on the market is 27 days. Chad believes this is a reflection of the housing quality in Fletcher. “All the homes are under 15 years of age and generally brick and tile,” he said. “People love the well-built

infrastructure of shopping centres, schools and playing fields/parks as well as the many walkways that surround the area.” Fletcher has family appeal, with 80% of homes owner-occupied by couples with children. As well as brand new homes and infrastructure, Chad says the schooling in the area is a major drawcard for families, and buyers are looking to get into the market solely for this reason. The main schools in the area are Bishop Tyrell Anglican College and Glendore Public School. Investment homes are doing well in the area, as depreciation rates are reasonable and homes do not spend very long on the rental market before being snapped up. Once rented, Chad says they are usually contracted to a full 12 months and pull $500 a week on average.
