As we go to our local polling booths and run the how-to-vote gauntlet this Saturday, it's important to remember just how important each individual vote is. If the recent Brexit result has taught us anything, it is that, for better or for worse, the popular vote still has an impact. So, when you're standing in the booth on election day, make it worthwhile and make your vote count. Just remember, donkey voters have no right to complain about their elected leaders. Up Scrubby Creek without a paddle

R

esidents of Mount Hutton whose properties back onto Scrubby Creek live in constant fear of rain. Susan Foster says a 20-minute downpour is all it takes for her to start panicking. She is one of many residents plagued by the problem-riddled creek, which starts near Lake Macquarie Fair shopping centre in Mount Hutton and runs through Windale. The creek is choked with rubbish; shopping trolleys, tyres, plastic bottles and children’s toys – even mattresses – are commonplace. It is also wildly unkept, with fallen tree limbs and weeds adding to the blockages.

Over time, this has diverted the natural flow of the already eroded waterway, causing flooding. Even a moderate amount of rain is enough to draw raw sewage from the sewage main out into the open. In the April 2015 storms, Susan’s three-acre property was flooded with storm water and faecal matter up to her front doorstep – a nightmare she does not want to relive. Susan has been campaigning with a handful of other residents, including Ray Hinton, to get something done about the creek. They say Lake Macquarie council hasn’t touched it in years, and the problem is only

about to get worse. Coles has lodged a development application to expand its Lake Macquarie Fair supermarket, which residents say could put extra strain on the creek. There is also a 19-lot housing development being built, uphill from the creek, on Cowmeadow Road. About 40 community members rallied for a public meeting on Saturday at the shopping centre to shine a spotlight on the problem. They resolved to lodge a formal submission to the council that outlines their request for the sewerage and stormwater infrastructure to be upgraded; debris and fallen tree limbs cleared and abandoned shopping trolleys removed – the latter at the expense of shopping centre management. The council did not provide comment by deadline on what maintenance work had been carried out to the creek in the past, or if the sewage system had been upgraded since it was installed over 50 years ago. A spokesperson did, however, say the council was working with the NSW Department of Housing, Lake Macquarie Fair and local Landcare groups to address issues related to Scrubby Creek. “Some works have already been undertaken… including the removal of some debris, particularly shopping trolleys,” the spokesperson said. The council has plans to undertake structural works to address the creek’s erosion; increase focus on shopping trolley management; and hold a community planting and clean-up day. It is also investigating grant funding to undertake an integrated creek rehabilitation project in the area. - Georgia Osland

Hunter loses out in state budget The 2016 NSW budget announcement was largely uneventful for the Hunter. There were no new infrastructure investments for a number of electorates, including Wallsend and Swansea, despite the government posting a record spend on infrastructure of $12.1 billion a year for the next four years. This means projects like the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange, which has previously been earmarked as a priority project for the Hunter, and the shovel-ready Marine Rescue radio base at Swansea Heads, have been left in the lurch. The government did, however, allocate $142 4

million to the Newcastle Light Rail project, which treasurer Gladys Berejiklian says proves the government is committed to delivering infrastructure projects in the Hunter. The redevelopment of Hunter Sports High School, originally slated for completion in 2017, has blown out to 2019, with only $1.3 million spent on the $20 million project so far. There is still no start date for the new Maitland Hospital, five years after the project was announced, with just $6.2 million of $20 million allocated for the site’s preparation. John Hunter Hospital’s neonatal unit did,

however, get a slice of the budget pie, to the tune of $10.3 million. All up, the expansion of the neonatal unit is expected to cost $18 million and to be finished in 2018. Singleton Hospital is also set to receive $5.4 million this year towards a $7 million upgrade, also anticipated to finish in 2018. As far as education goes, budget documents reveal an underspend of $313 million on TAFE during the 2015/16 financial year. There are also 14,567 fewer students with disabilities enrolled in TAFE now than in 2012. - Georgia Osland

oor decision-making by residents during storms has prompted the NSW State Emergency Service to launch a Hunter research project. “Flood deaths are preventable and the service wants to understand why it is that people continue to drive or walk through floodwaters, despite the warnings,” NSW SES Community Engagement Manager, Andrew Richards said. In the most recent storms at the start of June, the SES received 11,000 calls for help – 300 of which were flood rescues. Despite the service’s warnings for people to avoid driving or walking through floodwaters, two people died doing just that. “The research aims to prevent the loss of life by gaining a better understanding of how to encourage good decision-making prior to

these weather events occurring,” Mr Richards said. The SES hopes to use this insight to more effectively communicate the risk of entering floodwater. It wants to talk to people living in Gillieston Heights, Dungog, Torryburn, Woodville, Paterson and Duns Creek as well as Millers Forest, Duckenfield, Hinton and Wallalong. These communities were among the hardest hit in the April 2015 storm, which battered the Hunter and caused damage countless to homes and businesses. The research project will be undertaken by a team of researchers from the University of Newcastle, led by Dr Amanda Howard. Over the next few weeks, the researchers will be talking to individuals and groups to gauge their attitudes, decision-making

processes and behaviour during severe weather. Dr Howard said the team will also be surveying how aware and prepared the local community is for storms and floods, and what measures they have in place to respond. Dog park overhaul Users of Croudace Bay’s dogfriendly Thomas H Halton Park are being encouraged to provide feedback on Lake Macquarie council’s draft master plan for the park. The Newcastle Weekly reported in May that the council had set aside Section 94 development contribution funds that could be used to fence off a section of the park and restrict access to dogs, which are currently allowed to roam leash-free at certain daylight hours. At the time, the council was investigating how a fenced dog exercise area would work with other aspects of the park. ndependence, social inclusivity and new skills are what Zara’s House hopes to offer Newcastle’s growing refugee community. The Jesmond drop-in centre officially opened its doors last week, heralding a fresh start and a spate of opportunities for refugees past and present. Through key programs such as a sewing class, the centre hopes to equip women with skills and financial freedom. But the centre, which has been operating since April thanks to a $21,000 Multicultural NSW Unit Grant, offers much more than that, for men, women and children. In fact, its volunteers – members of an association called Refugees and Partners, which used to run Penola House in Mayfield until it closed last year – are on standby to help refugees with almost anything, from enrolling in TAFE courses to legal matters to applying for welfare benefits.

Centre volunteer Sister Diana Santleben says it’s difficult to give an exact number of people that use Zara’s House’s services, but she estimates it’s somewhere between 500 and 1000. And it’s preparing to welcome more, with the anticipated arrival of about 300 Syrian refugees in the Hunter over the next year. “Refugeeism should finish at the airport, when these people arrive,” Sister Diana said. “Everything after that, they do for Australia, as an Australian citizen. They are Australian people the minute they walk out of the airport, and should be recognised as such.” The centre hopes to play a key role in helping these refugees, most of whom have been displaced by war, transition to life in Australia, along with other vital services such as Northern Settlement Services and Hunter New England Health. oxing has transformed the lives of Henry Hely and John Patterson. Both young men’s confidence and social skills have improved out of sight since attending a boxing class for young adults with disabilities three times a week at Newcastle West’s Tuff’n Up Boxing Gym, according to their support worker. Twenty-five-year-old Henry, of Broadmeadow, and 28-year-old John, of The Hill, both have Down Syndrome. Together they have been attending the boxing class for the past couple of months, accompanied by Response support worker Brendan Murray. Brendan said he could not believe how beneficial boxing had been for Henry and John. “Boxing is a discipline, and anything that gives them routine is really good,” Brendan said. “The get right into it and they do benefit from the exercise.” But it was Henry himself who perhaps phrased it best how boxing made him feel: “I’m cranky when I start, and then I’m happy afterwards,” he said. Marks Point residents are being asked to keep an eye on the effectiveness of two tidal valves, which Lake Macquarie council will soon install to help manage tidal inundation. “The tidal valves that will be attached to stormwater outlets in Village Bay Close and Marks Parade are designed to stop water from the lake flowing up the pipeline and onto the road during high tides or at other times when the lake level is higher than usual,” council’s acting sustainability manager Dean Champan said. “During the trial period, we are asking local residents to help us assess the effectiveness of the tidal valves. Hamilton uncovered

ollowing on from the success of her 2014-book Hidden Hamilton, amateur historian Ruth Cotton has uncovered even more about the Newcastle suburb’s past with a second book titled More Hidden Hamilton. Ruth told Newcastle Weekly that, since her first book, she was inundated with stories of Hamilton’s past via social media (Ruth also runs a blog and is an active contributor to the Lost Newcastle Facebook group). “After the first one came out I thought ‘that’s enough’ but it really stirred people up – a whole lot of different people who had been following me on social media. I could see, around six months in, that I would have enough material for a second book.” While the book uncovers many historical gems about Hamilton landmarks such as Gregson Park, and the Roxy Theatre, there was one thing that Ruth found most interesting about her suburb. “It’s resilience,” she said. “When you consider that Hamilton started off as a really quite primitive settlement scattered around the mine, they were immigrants that came in; they pulled themselves up they organised a municipal council, they built churches, they fixed up the roads, they got a railway station.

As I talk to individuals today, I just think how, all the time, Hamilton is remaking itself, and resilience is something that is in the DNA of the suburb.” As an adjunct to the book and social media project, Ruth, along with the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce have organised a series of heritage plaques at sites of interest around Hamilton which will form the basis of walking tours that will launch next month. “There are interesting stories in all of our streets,” Ruth said “You just have to keep your eyes open and look around – you’ll be surprised.”

Hard work pays off In less than two years, Khadijeh Ebrahimi has gone from not being able to speak any English, to working as a qualified assistant in nursing. Khadijeh was born and raised in Afghanistan, but as a result of the war, she was forced to flee to Iran. She and her family eventually settled in Australia, where Khadijeh was determined to learn English. Khadijeh enrolled in Hunter TAFE and completed the Preliminary Course and Certificate I in Spoken and Written English within a year – half the recommended time to complete the course. In recognition of her tireless hard work, Khadijeh was awarded the Cultural Diversity prize at the 2016 Hunter TAFE Awards, off the back of Refugee Week last week (19-25 June).

“My TAFE English courses have helped me learn to communicate so now I am independent,” Khadijeh said. “When my English is good enough I will apply for nursing at Newcastle university.” Khadijeh is described by her teachers as a “hardworking, gifted language learner”.

Tomorrow, Friday, 1 July, marks the start of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) nationwide, progressive roll-out. The scheme will become available in Cessnock, Singleton and Port Stephens and other parts of the Hunter where it was not previously accessible as part of the initial trial. It is anticipated the NDIS will be fully operational in New South Wales by July 2018. The NDIS is Australia’s flagship disability care scheme. It was first trialled in July 2013 at four sites across Australia, including the Newcastle/Hunter area, which has since expanded to encompass Lake Macquarie and Maitland. The scheme, administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency, provides people with a permanent and significant

disability with the necessary supports to live the life they want. The NDIS pays for “reasonable and necessary” supports – that is, things that are related to a person’s disability and required for them to achieve their goals. This includes everything from equipment to therapy to travel arrangements and social activities. People who were already receiving care under a federal or state-based agency will automatically transition to the scheme in due course. Those who haven’t been receiving care, but want to, can apply to the NDIA. Applicants must meet disability, age and residence requirements. Aged just 49, she had not been unwell, but literally overnight, she became unable to live alone or do the things she wanted to do without assistance. However, life changed for her in 2014 when the trial of the NDIS in the Hunter region began. With the help of Life Without Barriers (LWB), Robyn was supported in preparing for her planning meeting, and through the process of having her NDIS plan developed with the NDIA. Now in 2016, and as the NDIS rolls out across half of NSW, Robyn has been able to access the support she needs. Thanks to a new electric wheelchair Robyn has been able to realise her goal of being more involved in the community. "It has changed everything. A powerful performance

ne of the major drawcards in this year’s NAIDOC week celebrations throughout the Hunter is sure to be Torres Strait Islander hip-hop artist Mau Power, who will be bringing his engaging brand of lyrical storytelling to the NAIDOC celebrations at Toronto Foreshore on Tuesday 5 July. Power told Newcastle Weekly that audiences could expect a huge performance. “I can’t wait to get down there, it’s going to be awesome and people can expect a real high-energy show with a touch of the theatrical.” Touted as the first rapper to emerge out of the Torres Strait and onto the

Aussie music scene, Power has been making a name for himself nationally for his 2014 album The Show Will Go On which features a collaboration with Indigenous music icon Archie Roach on the track Freedom.“Archie is such a humble soul and when I was a teenager, his song Took The Children Away really moved me to find out more about Indiginous history in this country and he inspred me to seek truth in songwriting so, being able to collaborate with him was a dream come true.” Mau Power will perform at the Westlakes NAIDOC Family Fun Day and Toronto Foreshore on Tuesday 5 July.
