This week From the editor On Monday, Ross Merrick was sentenced to 11 years in jail for the manslaughter of Marika Ninness.

“A deliberate and vigorous blow” took Marika’s life - an act that happened in our community, in a car park in East Maitland.

In today’s edition, Singleton-based lawyer and domestic violence advocate, Joplin Higgins, backs calls from Hunter domestic violence survivor Sarah, to overhaul the Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) process to enforce mandatory counselling for offenders.

We feel incredibly fortunate to give Sarah a forum to speak about her ordeal, but it’s such a shame that the scourge of domestic violence still rears its ugly head in our communities.

On another note, as someone who isn’t the biggest fan of summer, these cold mornings we've been experiencing of late have come as a welcome respite from the protracted warmer months, this year. Air-conditioning and shorts are replaced with blankets, fireplaces and tracksuit pants and the slow cooker, which has been idling away in my pantry, will see the light of day, once again, and I'll get to indulge in my wife's delicious chili con carne recipe.

Oh happy day.

news Petition strikes a chord A petition to replace a busy roundabout on Hillsborough Road, Warners Bay with four-way traffic lights has gained more than 10,000 signatures, guaranteeing a parliamentary debate on the matter.

The petition was led by Fishing Point resident Nicole Antony, an old friend of the mother whose 15-year-old daughter Jade Frith was fatally hit by a car, not far from the roundabout, last month.

Ms Antony said she had been overwhelmed by the community’s support.

“I’m just beside myself,” she said.

Ms Antony is still collecting petitions from local Lake Macquarie businesses, where it has been circulating, but she estimates there could be another 5,000 signatures to add to the tally.

Member for Charlestown Jodie Harrison will take the petition to the next sitting of parliament on 31 May, where she will table the document for debate.

Domestic violence ends with the perpetrator ingleton lawyer Joplin Higgins has backed calls from a Hunter domestic violence survivor to overhaul the Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) process and enforce mandatory counselling for perpetrators.

Sarah* was forced to live underneath her house for 18 months to escape her abusive husband, who, about one year into their marriage, pushed, hit and verbally abused Sarah to control every aspect of her life.

Sarah made the heartbreaking decision to leave her mother and one-year-old daughter in the house while she went into hiding.

She had struggled to find another home for the three of them and told Newcastle Weekly this was her only option.

One day, when her husband had left the house, Sarah decided enough was enough and changed the locks on the house.

She took out an AVO on her husband, but the abuse didn’t stop there.

While he never set foot on her property, he harassed her in other ways: drive-bys, unwanted phone calls, and dropping by Sarah’s workplace unannounced.

About two years and several AVOs

later, this behaviour finally stopped.

That was 20 years ago.

“After all these years, nothing has progressed,” Sarah said.

“The AVOs did nothing; it’s just ink on a piece of paper. They didn’t work then and they don’t work now.”

She said mandatory counselling for perpetrators would go a long way to addressing the pervasive problem of domestic violence.

“Drug addicts are made to take drug testing every day if working… but DV offenders have nothing in place,” Sarah said.

Like Sarah, Joplin Higgins believes something needs to be done.

Mrs Higgins said NSW, and indeed Australia, could learn a lot from the courtmandated counselling programs – called Batterers’ Intervention Programs – in America.

In February, Mrs Higgins visited various states in mid-west America on a Westpac Social Change Fellowship where these programs are in place and producing “phenomenal results”.

“Statistics show the longer the course, the less reoffending,” she said.

Mrs Higgins was particularly impressed by the 52-week program in place in Colorado.

She said there was a similar, 37-week program in the pipeline for the Upper Hunter area, covering Cessbock, Singleton and Muswellbrook, but nothing of this kind was planned for the Lower Hunter.

She said NSW Police and the government needed to work together to address this.

“If we don’t fix the perpetrator we can’t ever fix the problem of domestic violence,” she said.

And as far as the AVO process goes, Mrs Higgins says police need to treat breaches more seriously.

In her experience dealing with victims of domestic violence, behaviour such as stalking, fear mongering and intimidation were not taken seriously enough.

“We need to look at these elements of harassment as breaches of AVOs to make them more effective,” she said.

“Why have an AVO if there’s a breach and nothing can be done?”

As funds are limited, applicants must address all of the criteria. Council will only consider applications in exceptional circumstances, if not submitted as part of the annual process.

unter hospitals will share in $68 million in funding from private hospital group Healthe Care Australia.

Toronto Private Hospital will get a $9 million slice of the pie, which will fund 20 extra beds – 10 in the rehabilitation unit and 10 in mental health; a new kitchen and patient gym; new ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) and TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation) suites; a mental health day program area and additional car parking.

Merewether’s Lingard Private Hospital will receive $25 million to add more operating theatres; a 50-bed ward; a hydrotherapy pool and more parking.

Similarly, $25 million will be invested in Maitland Private Hospital, where the funds will be used to create two new theatres and associated services; an Intensive Care Unit; chemotherapy suite; a 24-bed ward and additional car parking.

The remaining $9 million will be invested in Mayo Private Hospital at Taree for new

services and car parking.

Healthe Care is owned by China’s Luye Medical Group and operates 17 hospitals across NSW, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and Tasmania.

Healthe Care Chief Executive Officer Steve Atkins said the funding would provide better access to hospital services for people in the Hunter Region.

“Our data shows us that the community is growing,” Mr Atkins said.

“We see where the demand and gaps are in service provision and aim to fill those gaps. Our hospitals will continue to get bigger and more sophisticated.”

Luye Medical chairman, Mr Liu Dian Bo, said the Toronto, Maitland, Lingard and Mayo hospitals were key hospitals in the organisation’s portfolio and it aimed to enhance patient experience in these hospitals.

Campaign breaks down stigma or some, it’s manageable, but for others, it’s debilitating. Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterised by intrusive thoughts and fears (obsessions) that compel an individual to carry out certain rituals in order to allay their anxiety (compulsions).

This week, from 22-28 May, is OCD Awareness Week.

The annual campaign aims to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people living with OCD, and help individuals who suffer the disorder better understand their condition.

One group that exists to support such cause is the Anxiety Support Group Jesmond.

The group meets monthly at Jesmond Neighbourhood Centre. It provides a safe environment for people with a range of anxiety disorders, including OCD, to share their stories.

Group co-facilitator Lindy Gemmell

said OCD was a complex disorder that affected people differently.

“For some, the hallmark symptoms of anxiety such as panic attacks can go hand-in-hand with OCD, but not always,” she said, “It is such an up and down type of experience.”

For this reason, Ms Gemmell, a trained adolescent counsellor of five years, said OCD Awareness Week was an important initiative.

“It’s taking the stigma away from mental illnesses in general, which can be such a preventer for people coming to a group like this and getting the help they need,” she said.

Ms Gemmel said the number of people attending the Jesmond group was on the rise.

“I think it’s an indicator that either disorders are becoming more prevalent in society or more people are reaching out and getting support.”

Boost for cancer services Local cancer services have been given a boost with the arrival, earlier this week, of four new chemotherapy chairs at Calvary Mater Hospital in Waratah. The new chairs, funded by Hunter New England Health, will help improve cancer services in the area and reduce chemotherapy treatment waiting times.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald welcomed the arrival of the chairs at the Hunter’s only dedicated public oncology unit.

“It’s important the facility has the spaces required to treat patients locally, reducing their need to travel,” he said.

“The hospital’s day treatment centre now has 20 treatment chairs and staff can, on average, treat approximately 45 patients each day.”

news Call for festival stallholders oodies and artisans unite: Lake Macquarie council wants you for the 2016 Living Smart Festival.

The council is on the hunt for stallholders for the annual festival, which will be held at Speers Point Park on Saturday 24 September.

The festival is a celebration of local sustainable products, from organic food to upcycled clothing to solar powered inventions.

More than 10,000 people flocked to the festival last year, making it the council’s premier environmental sustainability event.

Council’s acting Manager Sustainability, Dean Chapman said the festival had become a highly successful event on the council’s calendar, and one which effectively raised awareness of sustainability through music, demonstrations, hands-on activities, fun and food.

“This year’s festival is an opportunity for people to explore how they can adopt and introduce sustainable living into their everyday lives,” Mr Chapman said.

The program matches teenagers who have cerebral palsy with volunteer mentors from Greater Bank, who meet fortnightly for 1.5 hours after school for relaxed discussions about aspects of life

that matter to them as well as taking part in a range of activities from laser skirmish to a goal setting session with Newcastle Jets defender Daniel Mullen.

Cerebral Palsy Alliance youth projects coordinator Meredith Hudson told Newcastle Weekly, the program helps to develop life skills while offering a much-needed sense of inclusion.

“The program is basically a oneon-one mentoring experience in a group setting – some of the program is activity-based, such as fun things like laser skirmish and we also deal with topics like goal setting, bullying and cyber-safety,” she said.

“It really offers a sense of inclusion, helps to build confidence and it’s just so great to give these kids an opportunity to be around others who understand their situation.

“It gives participants a feeling of being okay with who they are and the confidence to possibly try new things.”

Meredith added that the mentors get just as much out of the project as their mentees.

“I do get a lot of comments from the mentors who say they get more out of it than their mentors and that, they don’t even see their mentee’s disability which is just fantastic.”

Corlette resident Rebecca Prior, whose son Issac Berg is currently participating in the program with his mentor Andrew Firth (who was recently awarded Volunteer of the Year from the Greater Charitable Foundation) said she couldn’t sing Ignition’s praises high enough.

“Issac started in an Ignition Lite program last year and came out of that extremely happy so he signed up to the program this year,” she said.

“We were only new to the program and we were both blown away with how we were completely welcomed by everyone involved and it’s really nice to know that Issac can talk to Andrew about anything.”

Report raises need for solution to housing crisis

S

ocial housing supply, rental costs and housing affordability for first-home buyers are among the hot-button issues flagged in a new report released by community housing provider Compass Housing.

Towards a National Housing Strategy, written by Hunterbased Compass Housing head of research Professor David

Adamson, in conjunction with other housing organisations and leading academics, recommends government intervention to address these problems and more.

The report calls for the establishment of a federal minister for housing, whose role would be to develop and implement a national housing strategy; the rebalancing of subsidised housing; as well as an

increase in social housing supply.

It reveals there are 206,000 families on the waiting list for social housing – 46% of which will wait two or more years to be allocated housing.

Of those receiving Commonwealth Rental Assistance, 40% pay more than 30% of their income on rent.

And while some struggle to pay the rent, renting seems to be the only affordable option for the younger generation, with the report warning of ‘generation rent’, which could see young Australians locked out of the housing market and forced to rent indefinitely.

These topics were discussed when the report was presented at a symposium in Canberra last week.

Experts in the field converged on the nation’s capital to refine the report’s recommendations into a suite of key policy targets, which Compass Housing believes should form the basis of a 10-year national housing strategy.

The plan will be presented to

the new government after the July 2 election.

Professor Adamson said the need for a national housing strategy had been repeatedly overlooked by successive governments, and the time for change was now.

“The commonwealth government is yet to produce a strategy that clearly acknowledges the problems being experienced by first-home buyers, renters, and those in need of social housing,” he said.

“There are around 100,000 homeless people on any given night and around 200,000 families on the waiting list for social housing.

“On top of that we have an extremely overheated housing market, particularly in capital cities, that is on the verge of turning an entire generation of Australians into permanent renters.”

For those wanting to put their culinary skills to the test, why not try your hand at this tempting recipe.

Baby stack pies

2 Tbsp pouring (single/light) cream 2 tsp apple cider vinegar

This is an edited extract from The Pie Project by Phoebe Wood and Kirsten Jenkins published by Hardie Grant, $29.99, available in stores nationally.

1/2 tsp vanilla bean paste 160g sour cream 2 Tbsp crushed freeze-dried raspberries to serve

Serves 4

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

2 × 435g frozen Careme vanilla bean pastry, thawed, or other bought sweet shortcrust rolled to a thickness of 3mm

Cut out six 15cm rounds from the pastry and press into the base and sides of six 11cm fluted tart tins. Trim the edges and chill for 2 hours.

60g unsalted butter, melted then cooled completely to prevent splitting

Preheat the oven to 200°C. Line the pastry cases with baking paper and fill with baking beads (or uncooked rice or dried beans). Cook for 20 minutes or until the pastry is light golden.

The Monsters of Rock Downunder will unleash their new single at Lizotte’s next month.

A MONSTROUS SINGLE DROPS When it comes to supergroups in the Newcastle region, they don’t come much more super than the Monsters of Rock Downunder.

Featuring the formidable talents of Grant Walmsley (Screaming Jets, Grant Walmsley Freebird), Craig ‘Rosie’ Rosevear (Screaming Jets), Paul Coxon (Faceplant), Dai Pritchard (Rose Tattoo) and Holly Wilson (Grant Walmsley Freebird),

these guys deliver a mammoth heavy rock sound, tempered by Wilson’s alluring stage presence and powerhouse vocals.

While they may’ve been gigging around the traps for the past couple of years, the band have just released their first single, Annie – an out and out rocker which tells the story of a single mother escaping a dark relationship.

“It has been a while in the making, so it’s great to see it out there,” guitar maestro Grant Walmsley told Newcastle Weekly” “We’ve been playing for two years now, but we’ve evolved to include Holly in the lineup who has definitely become an integral part of what we’re doing – it’s great having her with us as well because it gets us out of blokeworld.”

Grant added that given the long-standing relationship between all band members, there is intuitiveness within the Monsters camp that is quite hard to come by.

“See, Rosie and I go back to when we were kids and of course with the Jets; Paul and I have been surfing together since we were 14

or 15 and Dai is definitely my guitarplaying kindred spirit,” he said.

“I’ve also played with Holly for about four years in Freebird so, it’s all gelling really, really well.”

With the single finally out and set to be launched at Lizotte’s on 12 June, Grant added that there were plans in the works, this year for a lot of Monsters activity.

“Well, we do have a very special, symbolic album project in the works which I’ll remain pretty coy about, but we’re also doing an EP this year as well, and Annie will be the first track from that. It’s going to be a big year for us.

They may’ve only been a going concern for the last two-and-a-half years, but Newcastle rock three-piece In Motion have certainly packed quite a bit in.

The trio took out the Hunter High School Rock Off in 2014 as well as taking out runner up and people’s choice in the 2014 Youth Rockin’ The Black Dog competition. Last year, they also took out the Sydney-based competition Youth Rock (with previous winners including Silverchair, and Alex Lloyd).

Now, the band is on the cusp of releasing its debut EP, Change, and lead vocalist and bass player Lachlan Fisher told Newcastle Weekly that the excitement upon launching their music onto the world was palpable.

“It’s all pretty exciting to have the first recording out there,” he said.

“All of the writing was done by us in [guitarist] Daniel Ennis’ shed in Williamtown – some of the songs are six months old some are 18 months old so it’s a pretty good indication of where we’ve come as a band, so far.”

With influences ranging from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Powderfinger and Led Zeppelin, the band enlisted the services of

Chef Kevin Chong has brought a wealth of experience in restaurant management to the Belmont Bowling Club.

He has more than 30 years’ experience in the restaurant and catering industry and he now brings that wealth of knowledge to Kevin’s Fortuna Court. The restaurant boasts a combined western and Chinese menu, ranging from beef burgers, grilled chicken, fish fillets and steaks to an array of traditional Hong Kong/Southern Chinese cuisine with a slight Malaysian influence. Newcastle band In Motion will launch their debut EP next month.

Woolongong-based producer Adam Jordan (Nick Oliveri, The Choirboys), who has truly brought out the boys’ hook-laden melodies and hard, heavy beats.

With the EP launch imminent and the boys finally of age, Lachlan said their were plans in the works for the band to hit the road in support of the release.

“Hopefully, we’re looking at doing some touring around Australia either later on this year or early next year but, for the moment, we’re just really excited to be getting the EP out,” he said.

In Motion will launch Change at the Lass O’Gowrie Hotel on Friday 3 June.

layful, fun and sweet are a few adjectives that spring to mind when you hear the words Oh Fleur.

It’s an apt description of the two bubbly ladies behind the flourishing floristry business, Andrea ‘Ang’ Stig and Carla Rossiter.

The pair have been friends for about five years.

They met working at Belflora and worked together for a short stint at White bridal magazine.

But from the moment they met, the pair knew they were being beckoned by a higher calling.

With Ang’s background in business administration and Carla’s qualifications in public relations, the girls decided to put their heads together and follow a path they were both passionate about: floristry.

First they were asked to do flower arrangements for friends’ weddings, then friends of friends, and before they knew it, Oh Fleur was born.

“We were approached by people

in the industry who begged us to start up, saying, ‘Newcastle needs a killer wedding florist’,” Carla said. “So we thought: what have we got to lose?”

That was over three years ago.

Since then, Oh Fleur has burst onto the Newcastle floristry scene.

From a humble home studio in Mount Hutton, the dynamic duo fashion beautiful bespoke floral arrangements for weddings, private functions and pop-up stalls at local cafes, including The Edwards in Newcastle and Common Circus in Belmont.

They source their flowers from the Sydney Flower Market, to which they travel for fresh blooms before each job.

They pair Australian natives with timeless classics, from hydrangeas to peonies to orchids, and greenery such as trailing jasmine.

Each month they also run a

stall at the Hunt & Gather Markets in Newcastle’s Pacific Park, and occasionally host workshops at Maryville café Baked Uprising. “[The business] grew very organically,” Carla said.

“It was very much through word of mouth and social media.

“It’s just really cool to look back and think, wow, people must really love what we do.”

Oh Fleur has been inundated on Instagram and Facebook with enquiries about supplying flowers for bridal showers, kitchen teas and hen’s parties, which the duo is keen to pursue.

They are also interested in holding more pop-up stalls at other cafes. But for now, they are about to have a well-earned break, as Carla welcomes her first baby into the world.
