From the editor It's probably a sad fact to admit but, after dealing with the daily minutiae of work and family life (bills, chores, homework et al), I sometimes struggle to find the motivation to drag myself off the couch to walk down the street to pick up a litre of milk. That's why our story, on page 5 this week, about Williamtown woman Lesley Holly, struck a particular chord with me. As a 50th birthday present to herself, this year, Lesley is going to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro to raise funds for child poverty charity Compassion Australia. Wow! I've never been the biggest rugby league fan (soccer is more my speed) but I have always been a proud Novocastrian, which is why the Knights shocking 62-0 defeat at the hands of the Sharks was particularly irksome. It's been a tough twelve months on the field for the Knights but, if there's one thing us Novocastrians are known for it's digging deep in times of trouble so, here's hoping the team can turn things around in their clash against the Tigers in Campbelltown this weekend and that fans come out of the woodwork to throw support behind their team for their next home game against the Eels on May 30. Candidates line up to contest Hunter seats

lection season is upon us, which means it’s time to take a closer look at the candidates vying for your vote in the Hunter Region. It’s important to note ahead of the upcoming federal election on 2 July that there have been some boundary changes to Hunter electorates. The seat of Hunter lost Maitland and Kurri to the re-drawn Paterson in recent boundary redistributions. However, it absorbed the western Lake Macquarie suburbs of Holmesville, Barnsley, Rathmines, Arcadia Vale and Morisset from the seat of Charlton, which was abolished. Sitting Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon will recontest the seat, which labor has held since 1983. Charlton MP Pat Conroy, who is also a member of the labor party, will run for the seat of Shortland, where sitting MP Jill Hall is retiring after 18 years in parliament. In the boundary rejig, Shortland gained Cardiff from Charlton in the north but lost Charmhaven, Lake Haven and parts of Gorokan in the south to Dobell. Newcastle also lost Beresfield and Woodberry to Paterson in the trade-off, but gained parts of Wallsend from Charlton. This is good news for labor frontrunner and sitting MP Sharon Claydon, as the margin has climbed from 8.8% to 9.4% in labor’s favour. In Paterson – which, while it has gained from other electorates, has lost Dungog, Forster, Tuncurry, Hawks Nest and Tea Gardens to Lyne – liberal MP Bob

Baldwin is retiring. He passes the baton to Karen Howard, who contested the seat of Newcastle in the 2014 state by-elections. Paterson has been a liberal-held seat since 2001. This is the local state of play in the House of Representatives - or the Lower House - for which residents must vote according to the electorate they live in. On voting day, these candidates’ names will appear on the green ballot. However, the July election is a double dissolution election, which means Australians must also vote in the Senate (the white ballot), which has been dissolved. In a dissolution, all 76 seats in the Senate are abdicated and a full election called to resolve deadlocks between the House of Representatives and the Senate. In this case the trigger was the Senate’s rejection of the bill to reinstate the Australian Building Construction Commission. At the time of printing, opinion polls placed the Australian Labor Party, led by opposition leader Bill Shorten, marginally ahead of the National Liberal party, led by reigning Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, in a two-party preferred vote. - Georgia Osland

Hunter home birthing boom

he Hunter is fast becoming a home birthing hotspot, recent data from NSW Health shows. The latest Mothers and Babies Report reveals more mums in the Hunter New England Health district opted for home births than anywhere else in the state in 2014. Across NSW, there were 228

planned home births, 72 of which took place in the Hunter. That’s almost 32% of all home births for the year. That figure has increased steadily year-onyear, with the Hunter leading the state in home birthing for three consecutive years. In 2013, there were 217 planned home births, of which 64 were

Hunter babies, with the region representing 29.5% of all home births. That figure rose sharply from 2012, during which there were 202 home births, and 36 – or roughly 18% – were in the Hunter. “It’s more than just a hippie fad,” head of Friends of Belmont Birthing, Anne Turner said. The volunteer group exists to support and promote Belmont Midwifery Group Practice – one of only a handful of birth centres in Australia that offers a free, publicly-funded homebirth program. Established in 2005, the midwifery group is based at Belmont Hospital, where it has two birthing suites. Expectant mothers can choose to have their children at the hospital or at home, with no intervention and only mild pain relief. In case of emergency, for example when a caesarian is needed, or if the mother requests an epidural, they are transferred to

John Hunter Hospital. For this reason, the Belmont midwives only attend home births within a 30-minute drive from the John Hunter. Ms Turner gave birth to her youngest child at home through the service. She said the experience was “incomparable” to the hospital birthing experience. “It’s very calm; you’re in your own space and it’s no big deal,” she said. “We’re very used to seeing [giving birth] as a big medical emergency, but for most mums it’s a very straightforward physiological event and it’s best kept that way.” Through its website friendsofbelmontbirthing.org.au, open days and media promotion, Friends of Belmont Birthing hopes to spread the word about the service. “Not enough women are aware that it exists and we want to change that,” Ms Turner said. - Georgia Osland

Moving mountains for charity ew challenges are as tough as a self-set challenge. For Williamtown’s Lesley Holly, her Everest stands 5895 metres above ground in Tanzania. Except it’s not Mount Everest – it’s Mount Kilimanjaro. In October, Lesley will join 13 other Australians, including her 21-year-old daughter Ebony, on a seven-day trek up the summit to raise funds for child poverty charity Compassion Australia. But for Lesley, the challenge is as much about personal growth as it is about charity. “I will be celebrating my 50th birthday in July this year and I want to lift the lid on the physical and mental limitations I have put on myself over the years,” she said. But, as it turns out, preparing for your first trek isn’t an easy feat, as Lesley has learnt the hard way.

Two weeks ago, she was ready to call it quits. She had injured her calf muscle four times since she started training in January. “I had a bit of a meltdown,” Lesley said. “I thought: you can’t actually do this, what are you doing?” But then she remembered what had inspired her to tackle the trek in the first place. The Holly family has sponsored a little girl in Tanzania through Compassion for the past 10 years, whom Lesley and Ebony will have the chance to visit before they start their trek. Lesley, Ebony and the rest of the convoy leave on 6 October. The mother-daughter duo aim to raise a combined total of $20,000. The money will help fund toilets and classrooms for Tanzanian children.

Labor has promised $13 million towards the Lake Macquarie Transport Interchange if it is elected on 2 July. The first stage of the two-stage project has been split up into two sections, the first of which involves roadworks to extend and realign Stockland and Glendale drives, which has already started. However, the second section – the construction of a bridge over the rail line at Pennant Street to link Glendale and Cardiff – is only partly funded by Lake Macquarie council, which has fronted up $6 million towards the $32 million works. The $13 million promised by labor represents the amount that was cut from the project under the Regional Development Australia Fund by the Abbott and Turnbull governments. “Labor has consistently backed the Glendale interchange project; we see the value it will bring to this region,” Shadow Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Anthony Albanese said.

be struggling with the rising cost of housing. “Today’s opening will go a long way to reducing the shortage of affordable housing we see in the Cessnock local government area,” Cr Pynsent said. The $1.3million project was fully funded, planned and developed by Pacific Link and two of the four units were designed to suit the needs of people with disabilities, if required. “The provision of housing with appropriate support services is essential to help tenants overcome disadvantage and, where possible, live independent lives,” Pacific Link chairman David Beacon added.

A Newcastle-Port Stephens council merger proposal has been shelved pending a public inquiry. The NSW government, last week, announced as part of its Fit for the Future reform 19 council mergers across the state. However, a Newcastle-Port Stephens council was not one of them. Instead, the government will review Port Stephens Council’s

alternative proposal to merge with its Dungog counterpart. This leaves the MaitlandDungog council merger hanging in the balance. Newcastle council prefers to remain standalone. Wyong and Gosford councils were among those on the merger list, with the government creating a new Central Coast Council.

Chivalry isn’t dead

or musician Matt Purcell, touring around Australia with the likes of Jimmy Barnes and Stan Walker opened his eyes to the lack of services available to young people that give them much-needed life skills. To that end, three years ago, the 2016 Young Citizen of the Year nominee and his wife Courtney set up The Green Room in Warners Bay and things have been going from strength to strength. “The Green Room is a holistic service that aims to meet the needs of young people socially, creatively and academically so, we offer life mentoring for families and youth as well as academic and musical tuition,” he said. The Green Room now services more than 220 families in the area. One of the mentoring programs that Matt initiated has been gaining considerable traction - The Code of Kings, which aims to practically teach young men to be responsible and respectful to achieve measurable results. A main focus of the Code of Kings is a podcast which interviews current students about issues that affect them, such as bullying and mental illness. Such is the popularity of Code of Kings that the podcast went to number one in its category and Matt is now teaching the program to all boys at Glendale high school, with further plans to take it to more schools.

“One of my best mates’ dad raised him around the codes of chivalry and that’s something that always resonated with me,” Matt said. “Chivalry is wrapped up in ideas about respect for yourself and respect for others and that’s what Code of Kings is all about. “It’s an evidence-based program so, for example the program is tied up in three incentives – being responsible at home, doing homework and keeping a clean room, and we ask that a parent provides photographic evidence of them with the completed tasks. “The podcast also helps to give these kids a voice which is good because, culturally, boys don’t like talking about their feelings and stuff because it’s considered weak, but we’re doing what we can to change that perception.” Matt has also gained the support of local businesses like Genesis Fitness which provide prizes to help reward students and is always on the lookout for more so, if you can help out, get in touch. f you thought that superheroes were merely the denizens of comic books and the silver screen well, think again as this weekend, caped crusaders of all shapes and sizes will descend on Newcastle Foreshore to raise funds for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.

Multicultural grants on offer Community groups throughout the region, looking to host events that promote cultural diversity, are encouraged to apply for 2015/16 Multicultural NSW Celebration Grant funding. Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter Scot MacDonald said the state government grants provide funding of up to $5,000 for festivals and events that bring communities together, and promote social cohesion. “These Celebration Grants are about supporting those important events as well as spreading important messages about cultural harmony and cohesion,” he said. Aquatic health on the agenda

nvironmental experts from around the state will converge on Lake Macquarie next week to discuss climate change mitigation and the effects of sea level rise at the inaugural Hunter Aquatic Research Seminar. The one-day forum, coordinated by Hunter Local Land Services and Lake Macquarie council is open to anyone working or interested in the aquatic, coast and marine fields and will be attended by representatives from government, research institutions, industry and environmental organisations. Presentations will cover a range of topics including soft coral, local shark research, effects of sea level rise and climate change, impacts of mooring on seagrass, ecological modelling, marine debris, nutrient sources, estuary monitoring, water quality and food webs. “This is a step towards sharing

knowledge and identifying future research needs in the aquatic field,” council’s coastal projects officer Kym Bilham said. Makeover for historic library Newcastle Library’s façade will undergo a $900,000 makeover. The Newcastle War Memorial Cultural Centre’s windows will be replaced with a mixture of modern, fixed and double-glazed casement windows. IT’S GAME ON FOR HUNTER CHEFS

ome of the best chefs the Hunter has to offer will take on some of the heaviest hitters on the Sydney food scene when the Hunter Culinary Association’s (HCA) 7th annual Food Fight gets underway in Pokolbin next month. Troy Rhoades-Brown from Muse restaurant, Chris Thornton from Restaurant Mason, Garreth Robbs from Bistro Molines and Josh Gregory from EXP Restaurant will take on Colin Fassnidge from MKR and 4Fourteen, Matt Kemp from Q Station, Warren Turnbull from Chur Burger and Justin North from Hotel Continental, will battle it out in a culinary extravaganza that will see one team crowned the 2016 Food Fight champion. Troy Rhoades-Brown told Newcastle Weekly that, while the Hunter team was under some pressure, it was more than willing and able to give it its best shot.

“Those guys are all industry pros and have an awful lot of experience between them, but we’ve got a lot of fresh blood in the Hunter team so we’ll be looking to bring those Sydney guys down a peg or two,” Rhoades-Brown said. “There is a healthy level of competition involved but it’s also great fun for us up there competing and the audience as well.” The event will see the teams prepare entrees, mains and desserts – six dishes each in total, which equates to around 1800 plates for the 300 guests expected to attend – with diners asked to vote on their favourite dishes. The event will also act as a fundraising effort for HCA, with proceeds put toward the Brett Graham Scholarship Fund – a scholarship that helps support the region's up-and-coming chefs by offering an opportunity to work with renowned Novocastrian chef, Brett Graham at his acclaimed London, Michelin-starred

restaurant, the Ledbury. Rhoades-Brown knows, first hand, the kind of foot in the door this scholarship provides. “I won the scholarship in 2004 and went over to the Ledbury and the amount of experience and passion I developed over there was amazing,” he said. “Three of my apprentices have also won it - it is a very rewarding program which is great for young chefs to grab an opportunity that would otherwise be out of their reach, and it’s also great for the region as it continues to provide us with really well trained and passionate chefs.” The 7th Annual Food Fight will be on at Cypress Lakes Resort, Pokolbin on Monday 6 June from 11am. From the Lake to Nashville Since making the life-altering decision to leave her native Australia and try her luck in the musical Mecca of Nashville at the start of 2015, Lake Macquarie-bred songwriter Beth Brown has been pricking up more than her fair share of ears. The first fruit of her Nashville adventure, her debut EP Dream Coat, is due for release later this year and she told Newcastle Weekly that her time in Nashville, thus far, has been filled with more than a few ‘pinch me’ moments. “My goodness me, it has been such a whirlwind 12 months,” Beth said. “I’m just about to head into a session to put the final touches on the EP, everything is coming to life, but it’s been such an amazing experience. “Nashville really is at the forefront – it’s kind of the epicenter of all art forms, it’s got such a rich history and you can’t help but feel inspired.” Having piqued the interest of US producer Brad Jones, who put his touches on albums by the likes of Melody Pool, Ben Lee, Missy Higgins and Bob Evans, the opportunity for Beth to relocate Stateside came up and she grabbed it with both hands. “I think it’s always been something that’s been in the back of my mind, working in another 14

country – there’s always been something propelling me forward,” she said. “I was studying voice at the Newcastle Conservatorium and then I got into the NMIT songwriting degree. There, I learnt from Greg Arnold who was in Things of Stone and Wood and he eventually gave a song to Brad who was a friend of his. “I went over and recorded a song with Brad which went really well and, when he asked me if I’d like to record an EP, I just jumped at the chance.” With highlights such as debuting at Americana Fest 2015, playing the prestigious Blue Bird Café, becoming the first Australian female artist to be endorsed by Gretsch Guitars, and working with gospel producer Shannon Sanders (John Legend) and writers John Hadley and David Olney (Dixie Chicks), you’d be forgiven for thinking that Beth has waved goodbye to the Antipodes for good. The Uplift Project is on again, in conjunction with popular pre-loved women’s fashion event Raid My Wardrobe on Sunday 29 May. The annual bra drive collects and distributes preloved bras to women in Asia-Pacific countries, such as Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu and the Philippines, who can’t readily afford them. It will be the third bra drive Raid My Wardrobe founder and director Rachel Prest has conducted in conjunction with the event. She said donating old bras was such a simple act of kindness, which raised awareness of the difficulties some women faced on a daily basis. “Imagine not being able to get a job because you didn’t own a bra,” she said. “[It] sounds ridiculous, but this is the reality for

When choosing which lavender to grow, consider the following: • French and Italian are the toughest in areas which get high humidity. • The English forms, Spica, Munstead and Hidcote need extra good drainage. • English lavender has the best perfume. • French lavender flowers longest from February to November. • Italian lavender flowers from September to November. • English lavender flowers from November to February.
