From the editor Our funky, retro cover story this week features the wonderful world of pinball machines. As I was growing up in the late 80’s, pinball machines were declining in popularity as electronic gaming systems like Nintendo and Sega began their rise. Thanks to enthusiasts like Newcastle Pinball Association president, Chris Slevin, these reminders of a simpler way of life won’t die out anytime soon as parents of a similar age to myself are able to introduce pinballs to the next generation. As Mr Slevin told me, no two pinball games played on the same machine are ever exactly the same. Something simple as pulling the ball launch back a little softer or harder can dramatically change the outcome of your game. Mr Slevin also said the pinball industry was virtually extinct in the end of last century, with one major company deciding there was a stronger future in switching to making poker machines. However, there is still a solid market around the world with enough buyers for small companies to come up with new themed machines. We also take a look at a couple of medical stories, which while they don’t deal with particularly pleasant issues, are of vital importance to a significant part of the community. - Paul Monforte

Reducing the stress and worry of childhood heart disease arents of children suffering from heart disease have assisted in the development of a new program aimed at addressing a lack of resources and information available for affected families. The HeartsLocal program, an initiative from children’s charity HeartKids NSW, will directly benefit more than 500 newly-diagnosed ‘heart families’ across regional NSW by providing a comprehensive information pack, care guide, virtual support guide of hospital facilities and financial support.

HeartKids NSW worked with a dozen parents affected by childhood heart disease to define the content and objectives and, with $55,000 in funding from Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation, made the program a reality. HeartKids NSW CEO, David Rose, said the program will help to reduce some of the anxiety for regional families travelling to Sydney for treatment. “HeartKids is a really special children’s charity that is connected to our families - they are the reason why we do what we do,” Mr Rose said.

“Most people don’t know the impact childhood heart disease has on the community. Eight children are born every day in Australia with childhood heart disease. “Tragically, there are four children who lose their battle with childhood heart disease every week. “So, that means that childhood heart disease is the greatest cause of infant mortality under the age of one. “When we were looking at HeartsLocal, we asked ourselves what the problem was that we were trying to solve. We knew that the diagnosis of childhood heart disease had a similar impact to post traumatic stress disorder. “The HeartsLocal program, focuses on ensuring that heart families are not alone on their journey and provides assistance through peer and financial support and education and information services.” Newcastle Permanent Charitable Foundation executive officer, Jason Bourke, said the program would help to develop a mutually supportive network for heart families and provide muchneeded emotional support. “The HeartsLocal program will provide greater clarity, information and emphatic support to newly-diagnosed heart families and also assist the 3,000 existing heart families across NSW,” Mr Bourke said. Government grant for responsible pet ownership Parliamentary Secretary for the Hunter, Scot MacDonald MLC has announced that Lake Macquarie City Council will receive a grant from the NSW Government to promote responsible pet ownership in the Lake Macquarie community. Mr MacDonald said Council will use the $10,000 grant to offer ratepayers a free microchipping day and a subsidised desexing program for dogs and cats. “I congratulate Lake Macquarie City Council on taking its pro-active approach to responsible pet ownership,” Mr MacDonald said. “The NSW Government is committed to improving the positive benefits of pet ownership while strengthening safety and companion animal accountability in our neighbourhoods.” Responsible Pet Ownership Grants were

introduced in 2014 for councils to develop tailored programs to increase pet-owner responsibility and target issues addressed in the Companion Animals Taskforce report. Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole, said that this was the second round of the Government’s successful Responsible Pet Ownership grants program. “Approximately $300,000 will go directly to 29 NSW councils in 2015 to develop dog safety, microchipping, desexing, and cat and dog registration programs.” RSPCA NSW CEO Steve Coleman welcomed the second round of grants. “Anything that improves the rates of pets being vaccinated desexed and microchipped is something to be applauded,” he said.

Guiding children through their cancer journey he Greater Charitable Foundation recently provided funding to assist in the continuation of Camp Quality child life therapist, Veronica Oakley, at the John Hunter Children’s Hospital with a generous sum of $128,000 over the next two years. Child life therapy (formerly known as procedural pain or play

therapy) aims to reduce the stress and anxiety that can be associated with hospitalisation by focusing on the child’s development, social and emotional wellbeing. “Child life therapy is about helping the child through the journey and enabling them to be able to help themselves, because the more they know, the more

compliant they are and the easier it is for them to understand why it’s happening,” Ms Oakley said. “It’s virtually playing their way through each stage and the process that they have to go through.” Camp Quality child life therapists focus on supporting the psychosocial development of children diagnosed with cancer in order to build their resilience and develope effective coping strategies. Benefiting from the program is three-year-old Harper Vaughan who suffers from acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. “Harper has responded really well to Child life therapy,” Harper’s father, Brad Vaughan said. “Early on, Veronica helped, not only Harper, learn about her illness but both me and her mum as well. She also helped us to communicate better with Harper and help in understanding what’s going on throughout.” - Kayla Stephenson

Building approvals on the rise across the Hunter Latest Australian Bureau of Statistics figures on new home building approvals indicate that activity across the Hunter region continued to increase in the year to July. From January to July 2015, ABS figures show a total of 3,014 approvals have been issued for new dwellings in the Hunter and Central Coast regions - an increase of 7.9 % when compared to the same period in 2014. Multi-unit approvals have increased by 5.6 %, while detached house approvals increased by 4.25 %. Housing Industry Association executive director for the Hunter region, Craig Jennion, said the increase in new home building approvals was spread across both detached new homes and multiunit approvals.

RECAPTURE THE CAREFREE DAYS OF YOUTH AT PINFEST he golden age of pinball machines returns to Newcastle on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 September for Pinfest at Caves Beach Hotel. Organised by the Newcastle Pinball Association, Pinfest allows enthusiasts to play an unlimited number of games on 60 machines for an entry price of $10 for a four-hour session. Newcastle Pinball Association president, Chris Slevin said all money raised would be donated to charities Beyond Blue and Justice Community. “There will be machines of all eras at Pinfest, from the ‘60s through to the KISS machine which has just been released,” Mr Slevin said. “They will all be set on freeplay. “There will also be some machines on sale. I would advise getting there early on Saturday to peruse the games for sale. “We all wear orange shirts at Pinfest so, if anyone has any questions about pinballs such as

where to have your machines repaired, we can certainly put them in touch with the right people. “We usually have around 1500 people come through over the course of the weekend. A lot of family groups with little kids like to attend. Mr Slevin, owner of Pizza ‘n’ Pinball at Broadmeadow which features a rotating stock of machines, said his love of pinball machines developed at an early age. “I grew up in Waratah and pinballs were everywhere - in corner shops, fruit shops,” he said. “My brother (Pizza ‘n’ Pinball co-owner Dominic) used to get on our bikes and ride around everywhere to play pinball. “About 13 years ago, I gave up playing football and was looking for a hobby. Frame Drive bridge remains a high priority Cessnock City Council has assured assure residents and motorists all possible avenues for funding are being sought for Frame Drive Bridge, Abermain which has been closed to traffic since being damaged by floodwaters in April. Council said funding may still be available through the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) for upgrades to the road links as a result of the opening of the Hunter Expressway. RMS are currently undertaking traffic counts and traffic modelling at the Hart Road interchange, at Kurri, with Council expecting a report back by the end of September on the results.

Lifeball is a modified version of netball that is designed for older people. AN ARTFUL TRIBUTE f there was a voice, in this country, capable of carrying the work of icons Tom Waits, Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave it would have to be the sultry, booming baratone of Mikelangelo. Perhaps best known as the frontman of the astounding Canberra-based gypsy cabaret outfit Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen, the sonically stoic Mikelangelo, along with longtime creative foil Clare St Clare have created a show that pays homage to three of the biggest influences in the singer’s formative years. “Those guys were my mentors, growing up – I mean, when you’re a big awkward kid with a baritone voice it’s hard not to become influenced by those guys,” he told Newcastle Weekly.

Mikelangelo will take on the formidable catalogues of Cave, Waits and Cohen.

MIXED GRAIN ‘RISOTTO’ WITH BACON AND PEAS LaBrooy and Robertson write: This style of ‘risotto’ goes really well with a grilled piece of barramundi or crispy-skinned jewfish. You can also serve it with steamed vegetables, or roasted brussels sprouts or root vegetables. We created this dish when we wanted something lighter than the traditionally heavy, creamy and cheesy risotto that we’re all familiar with. Food Editor’s tip: Peas are in season, so substitute the frozen peas in this dish for fresh!

Simmer the barley, coucous, quinoa and lentils separately until al dente. You can cook these in four small or medium saucepans at the same time, just watch for different cooking times. Drain well, combine and set aside.

Heat a medium, heavy-based saucepan over high heat. Add the oil, onion, garlic, bacon and chilli and cook until the onions are soft and the bacon starts to caramelise. Add the grains and 250ml of stock and stir gently for 3–4 minutes. The starches in the grains will start to thicken up the liquid, keep cooking until you have a risottolike consistency.

Salt flakes and freshly ground pepper

Add the butter and, once melted, add the peas and mint, squeeze over the lemon juice and season to taste. If it looks a little dry, add some more stock. Spoon into bowls and serve.
