From the editor The culture of the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (WRHS) has been front and centre in the media in recent times.

It followed a joint investigation between 60 Minutes and The Sydney Morning Herald, based on allegations from a handful of “whistleblowers”, who described it as “toxic”.

They claimed, in a letter, of “inappropriate workplace behaviour”, “long-term victimisation” and an “environment of fear that targets those who speak out” to name a few concerns.

Not surprisingly, the WRHS refuted the accusations immediately.

And, the phrase “innocent until proven guilty” is certainly applicable on this occasion.

While not condoning poor conduct in any workplace, the question must be asked: Will it harm the WRHS's reputation? Hopefully, the answer is "no".

The service, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023, has been a godsend to hundreds of thousands of people – at no cost – throughout the region.

Quite literally, it’s saved lives, from flights for babies who are just minutes old to those requiring medical treatment or trauma assistance.

For more than five decades, they’ve served the community proudly.

It’s now our turn to support them.

Step forward to ease frustrating bottleneck on Hexham Straight

O

ne of the region’s most frustrating bottlenecks has taken a huge step forward, with three southbound lanes

now open on Hexham Straight.

The milestone marks significant progress on the $2.24 billion project, along with the M1 to Raymond Terrace extension, to ease congestion throughout the Hunter.

From Monday 3 November, motorists noticed the difference between Old Maitland Road and Sparke Street.

A new southbound bridge over Ironbark Creek is carrying four lanes of traffic, two in each direction.

Work also continues on a second structure, this time for northbound road-users.

One of the most exciting developments is the $4.2 million expansion of West Wallsend Swim Centre. This project will deliver a new indoor learn-to-swim pool, designed for year-round use. It will feature an accessible ramp, upgraded amenities and a dedicated lifeguard station, supporting children and adults of all abilities to build confidence in the water, as well as accommodating specialised programs like A Splash of Colour Swimming program.

Looking ahead, the team isn’t slowing down anytime soon.

Double Duck plans to start making its own pie shells and moving into wholesales, supplying their respected pies to interested cafés, pubs, and restaurants across the Hunter.

“We haven’t even scratched the surface yet,” Sheldon said.

“Next year’s going to be huge for us.”

“I think that’s why people keep coming back.”

So, after the rigmarole of getting her in the car and away – we arrive – at 2pm on a Saturday… only to be met with the banshee screams of forty or fifty 8-10 year olds there for various birthday parties and hopped-up on, what I can only assume, was all the Fanta and birthday cake in New South Wales.

I kid you not, we took one step into the place (after I’d paid of course) and Lucia, clear as day, eyes as wide as saucers, said “HOME!” Scared out of her mind at this intense energy, I’ll admit, so was I.
