From the editor What a difference a win makes!

The Newcastle Jets 3-1 victory against Wellington at home on Sunday did not go unnoticed, even by the least passionate of soccer fans among my acquaintances.

It was big news in our house, mostly because my son was able to congratulate striker Milos Trifunovic in his native Serbian when he ended the side’s barren run. (He has a Serbian friend, who mostly teaches him insults, but whatever they yelled to Trifunovic was greeted with a wide smile.)

They even hung around after the game to shake hands with the players instead of bolting for Maccas in the 90th minute. Sign of the times? I hope the crowd will be bolstered this Sunday to see the Jets beat Perth.

Still on a sporting note, it gives me great pleasure to welcome “Ahead of the Game” columnist Kevin Cranson to the Newcastle Weekly.

Kev is a long-time sports editor, fan, coach and player, who still takes the field with the Lambton Jaffas old blokes. What he doesn’t know about sport in the Hunter is nobody’s business.

I hope you enjoy his contribution and drop him a line.

Youth centre is a winner drop-in centre for young people in Lake Macquarie Fair is the latest initiative by the Centre for Hope to improve life in Windale and surrounds.

Founder Geraldine Moran, who was this week named Lake Macquarie citizen of the year, said the centre, which opened in September,

provided a safe place for young people, six to 16, to hang out, play pool or table tennis, and have a snack.

“We found a lot of the kids in this area just aren’t eating properly, so here they can come in and have a cheese and ham toastie and a bit of fruit, and they don’t have to steal,” Ms Moran

Help plan the future of Windale Community ideas are being sought on how to further improve Windale, as Lake Macquarie City Council prepares a development control plan for the suburb.

Planting trees and gardens in public spaces, rezoning to allow for small lot housing, beautification works and signage along the Pacific Highway and South Street, and refurbishing the tennis courts are among suggestions so far.

Council senior strategic planner Susie Young said increasing the mix of affordable housing was a priority, and it was highlighted by the winner of a recent ideas competition, Angela Gavin.

“We have more demand now for smaller households and more affordable housing to suit singles, couples, older people and people with mobility issues,” Ms Young said.

“Angela is a young person who believes it should also be easier for young people to get 4

into the housing market. Windale is an ideal area for that: its location, transport, and suitability to young families because of open space and sporting fields.”

Windale has about 1000 dwellings, twothirds of which are public housing. Some public housing had been sold to the private market in recent years and had been refurbished for private rental and sale, Ms Young said.

The skate park was to be relocated as part of the Masters retail development proposed for the eastern side of Windale, although its future is uncertain.

“We would also like to make sure there is connectivity via cycleways between these facilities,” Ms Young said.

Staffed by volunteers, the centre attracts about 20 youth a week, but the numbers are growing as word spreads.

More special events, like the visit by Blacksmiths hairdresser Lauren Harrison last week, are planned.

In the four years since founding the Centre for Hope, Ms Moran has also set up the Wheels for Hope (in which bikes are reconditioned), a homework centre and a Supporting Families program.

“We’re trying to support families and children at risk through different ways of doing things,” Ms Moran said.

“We’ve had incredible community support, plenty of volunteers, and lots of positive feedback from people who say ‘I wish I had that when I was growing up’ and ‘that’s just the thing we need to reduce graffiti and bad behaviour’.”

The centre has also received a grant to improve cross-generational support in the Windale indigenous community.

Flood warning failing The NSW State Emergency Service says people are still ignoring the message about not driving through floodwater.

People were rescued from 11 vehicles during recent Hunter floods without loss of life, but one person died in Victoria in the days before.

“Driving a motor vehicle through floodwater is the single biggest cause of flood deaths during Australian floods,” SES commissioner Adam Dent said.

People who drive through floodwaters risk a $425 fine for negligent driving.

If it leads to injury or fatality they may face imprisonment.

Researcher Dr Elspeth Rae says 80% of those who die driving into floodwaters are male, with the 18-25 and over 65 age groups at particular risk.

Four-wheel-drives are disproportionally represented in the vehicles involved.

There’ll be music, water activities, face painting, a mobile video games van, the annual Scouts canoe race, and a special performance by Australian music legends 1927 at 6.15pm and Richard Clapton at 7.50pm, with fireworks at 9pm.

• Port Stephens Riverside Park, Raymond Terrace, will have a free breakfast,

There will be a speed boat demonstration by the Raymond Terrace Aquatic Club at 11am and a RAAF flyover by Hawks from 78 Wing at noon.

Council merger meetings ewcastle and Port Stephens residents can have their say about the proposed merger between their councils online and at three public meetings on Thursday 4 February.

The meetings will be held at Horizons Golf Club, Salamander Bay, 9am-noon; and Marina Views Function Centre, Wickham, from 3pm-5pm, and 7pm-10pm.

Paul Toole said, based on analysis by financial firm KPMG, this would reduce the reliance on increasing rates, reduce infrastructure backlog, improve strategic planning and economic development, improve service provision, provide a better voice for the region at state and federal level, and realise the economic and employment potential of Newcastle Airport and the revitalisation of the Newcastle CBD. The merger would also generate savings of $5million a year from 2020, the government said. This would come about through streamlining senior management ($7 million), redeployment of administration ($54 million), increased purchasing power of materials and contracts ($11 million) and a reduction in councillors from 23 to 13 (reduced fees of $2.5 million).

Steph’s on her way t’s still a long way from Broadway, but Newcastle singer-actress Stephanie Priest has won her first professional music theatre role in Sydney musical theatre company Squabbalogic’s production of The Original Grease.

The show, at Sydney Seymour Centre’s Reginald Theatre from 6-30 April, includes

songs and scenes that were cut from the original Grease production, making it raw and rebellious.

Stephanie, 28, will play Jan, one of the Pink Ladies, who are wooed by the Burger Palace Boys. She has a duet, Mooning, with one of the boys, Roger.

“I feel so excited to have received this role and so lucky to be given the chance to work with such a wonderful company,” Stephanie said.

The vibrant young woman, who works as a humour therapist for the Arts Health Institute and singing teacher at The Voice Studio, has won two CONDA awards.

She was outstanding actress in a musical for The Great American Trailer Park Musical, staged by Hunter TAFE’s Regional Institute of Performing Arts in 2010, and as Annie Oakley in Opera Hunter’s Annie Get Your Gun, in 2011.

“What a wonderful platform Newcastle theatre has been for me; how much I have learnt and been able to thrive,” Stephanie said.

“My ultimate ambition is to be able to perform full-time and make a living out of it. And of course, I’d love to be on Broadway one day.”

Recently she co-wrote, directed and starred in the play Unforgettable for Short + Sweet Sydney, earning a place in the top 12.

Calling short story writers Aspiring writers have 10 more days to enter the inaugural Newcastle Short Story Award.

Organised by the Hunter Writers Centre, which also runs the prestigious Newcastle Poetry Prize, the award attracts prize money of $2000 for first place and $1000 for second.

The 30 best stories will be published in an anthology to be launched at the 2016 Newcastle Writers Festival on 1 April.

Stories must be around 2000 words, and entrants must be over 18.

Karen Crofts, the director of the Hunter Writers Centre, said the centre now offered three major contests each year, with prize money of more than $25,000.

Judges for the short story competition will be Newcastle author Michael Sala, who won the 2013 Commonwealth Book Prize for The Last Threat, and Glenys Osborne, the winner of the Barbara Jefferis Award for Come Inside.

Let’s look on the bright side – the only way is up ry to be positive, editor Alysson Watson said as we discussed the introduction of a sports column in Newcastle Weekly.

For a life-long fan of Newcastle’s football and rugby league flagships in their various incarnations since the arrival of KB United in the late ‘70s, and a sports journalist for 20 years, that’s easier said than done these days.

Sure, there have been moments of unbridled joy in that time, and entire seasons of sustained excellence, but the last half dozen years have been pretty grim.

The Jets and Knights are reigning wooden-spooners, and both are in the hands of their governing bodies after bail-outs following the disastrous Nathan Tinkler era.

And, at the risk of sounding churlish, the FFA and NRL seem

intent on running the clubs on the cheap, meaning that if everything comes together, and we have a good run with injuries, and some recruits we’ve taken a chance on come good, and some promising kids aim up, and we punch above our weight, well, we might sneak into the finals.

Money won’t guarantee you a title, but I sure can’t see any side winning anything these days without it.

And yet, we keep turning up.

Why? Why do we do it to ourselves?

Because you can’t give up. And because we know that, when we get it right in Newcastle sport, it’s a wonderful thing.

Hope springs eternal.

• Jets striker Milos Trifunovic has copped his fair share of criticism during the side’s barren run, but he showed some ticker

against Wellington on Sunday at Hunter Stadium.

With the Jets on the verge of a new A-League record for the longest time without scoring, referee Jared Gillett rubbed out a goal from skipper Nigel Boogaard and awarded a penalty for a foul on Trifunovic in the lead-up.

I doubt I was the only one watching with a sense of doom as the out-of-sorts Trifunovic stepped up to the spot, but he coolly slotted the ball home to end the drought and put the Jets on the way to a rare win.

• Veteran David Carney’s renaissance at the Jets continued with a man-of-the-match performance against Wellington.

Carney has dragged himself up by the bootlaces since being exiled

by Tinkler last season, and his effort on Sunday was full of guile and vigour.

Hopefully talk of interest from other clubs remains just that.

Newcastle fans need a new favourite, and the club can’t afford to lose a player people will pay money to watch.

If you thought you knew everything there was to know about the humble meatball, you obviously haven’t been to the revamped Greenroof Hotel.

reg Mathew and Russell Richardson (the brains behind King Street Hotel and Argyle House) bought the venue late last year and while they have certainly brought it into the new millennium with some thoroughly modern and quirky flourishes, much of the pub’s original charm remains.

Licensee Angus Harper told Newcastle Weekly that one of the main focuses of the revamp was to bring the idea of the local pub back to Newcastle.

“People of my generation – mid-20s – don’t have a ‘local’,” he said. “ We really want to bring the idea of the local back to Newcastle where it’s not always necessarily about going out and having a big night, but coming in, enjoying a couple of beers and a meal with friends.”

Perhaps the biggest talking point is the pub’s menu. With a heavy reliance on preparing meatballs in almost every way imaginable, diners can choose from either the Ready to Roll section, which includes a selection of chef’s suggestions 10

(such as the Ball Field – lamb balls atop truffled field mushrooms, with goat’s cheese, watercress, green sauce and truffle crumbs) or the Roll Your Own section.

This side of the menu asks diners to choose their own balls (beef, spicy pork, lamb, chicken or vegetaball) sauce, unders (Brooklyn-style spaghetti, Boston beans, grits, buttermilk mash or truffled mac and cheese) and greens.

“The menu is predominantly meatballs – it’s an idea from New York,” Harper said.

“Greg, one of our owners, went to The Meatball Shop in New York a number of years ago and looked at bringing a franchise to Australia but that eventually fell through. He and I visited again at the start of last year; we both absolutely loved the idea.

“There are a lot of great pubs in Newcastle who serve up great food so we wanted to be a little bit different from that. If you delve deeper into the menu you’ll find that we’ll use meatballs for a lot of other things like our El Mexico, which

is a nachos and instead of a bean sauce or beef mix, it’s made with meatballs.

“We also have a lot of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, so there is plenty to choose from.”

With something different happening every night (Monday’s Ball Games promotion – double your balls for $2, for example), the Greenroof also offers up an array of quirky activities to keep the punters coming back, such as retro games in the front bar.

“Retro games came about because we like to have a beer at a pub as well and we love playing games so we’ve got Connect 4, we’ve got Gameboys with Tetris in them and we’ll be having a Tetris high score competition which we’ll draw every month,” he said.

“We’ve got all sorts of quirky things behind the bar – we didn’t want a bar that was just chock-full of alcohol – we wanted some talking points to get people involved.

“There’s an ant farm that we’re currently populating and we’re going to name all of the ants after Seinfeld characters and we’ll be updating all of their goings-on on our socials so you’ll be able to see how much progress Jerry or Kramer made that week.”

PARTY WITH ADAM'S OUTLAWS n the world of popular music, the term “supergroup” gets bandied about quite often, but when it comes to Australian country, for Adam Brand’s latest project, the title couldn’t be more apt.

The 12-time Golden Guitar winner has teamed up with fellow country heavy hitters Drew McAlister (McAlister Kemp), the Hunter’s own Travis Collins (in the running for three 2016 CMC Music Awards), Matt Cornell (Baby Animals) and Mike Carr (two-time ARIA award winner) to form the Outlaws, who will be hitting our neck of the woods next month.

“We’re all just so pumped to be getting out on the road,” Brand said.

“It certainly is a long tour – about 30 shows – but the whole premise of the Outlaws is that we’re all great buddies. I’ve toured with all of

the guys before but never in the same car, so it’s going to be a blast.”

The band are hitting the road in support of their rollicking debut record containing an all-killer, no-filler collection of rock and country classics including Barnsey’s Working Class Man, Jet’s Are You Gonna Be My Girl and the Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson classic Mamma Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.

“The way we approached it was to look at it in terms of if we were going away on a fishing trip, what would be the soundtrack we would want playing, so picking the songs to go on the album wasn’t really that hard,” he said.

“Recording it was an absolute blast, too.

There was absolutely no pressure, just a hell of a lot of laughs.”

Brand, who has been one of the leading

figures in Australian country music since releasing his debut, self-titled album in 1998, said he has seen dramatic changes in the country climate in Australia – all for the better.

“I’ve seen Australian country evolve into something that has embraced a lot more styles,” he said. “I mean, you’re seeing a lot more rock and roll-inspired country these days, which is great. I mean, there’s definitely always going to be a place for traditional country, but it’s really exciting to see more and more influences creeping in.”

Once the mammoth Outlaws tour wraps up in March, Brand said he would be looking to start work on the follow-up to his 2014 set My Side of the Street, adding that fans could expect more than a few surprises.

“I’m always open to all possibilities,” he said.

“The next album will definitely be pushing all the buttons, that’s for sure."

Priest is still riding high on the back of his 2014 release, Easy To Love - a set that revels in his earliest musical influences – roots, reggae and lover’s rock – and one that pundits are calling a career-best.

The album is the first fruit of his relationship with iconic reggae label VP Records and also features contributions from such luminaries as Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, Earl Smith and

Steven “Lenky” Marsden.

“It was just such a joy to record,” he said of the album. “It was all very relaxed and very enjoyable and because I was working with the VP guys I found that I didn’t really have to explain myself too much. I’ve worked for many years with major labels and, not wanting to diss them, but they didn’t always understand what I was doing – with VP it’s like we’re kindred spirits.

“The process was just such a joy and it’s opened everything up for a whole new range of possibilities.”

Priest, who cut his teeth on the South London reggae sound system circuit with outfits like Saxon Studio International, said that his love of mixing styles came by virtue of his geography.

“I think that I have been entirely spoilt by growing up in England,” he mused.

“From a very early age I was immersed in this giant musical melting pot with people like the late, great David Bowie, the Rolling Stones and many, many different styles. It’s impossible not to want to select the best bits from all of those styles and sounds and to make something your own.”

When the US embassy is invaded, six staffers manage to sneak out and take refuge with the Canadian ambassador (Victor Garber). CIA extractor Tony Mendez (Affleck) is sent to rescue them, concocting a rather awkward plan of posing as a movie producer who is scouting locations for a sci-fi movie. It seems a bit far-fetched but, here’s the brilliant part, it’s actually a true story. Also stars Bryan Cranston, Alan Arkin and John Goodman.

With a dust storm about to hit the town, their parents (Nicole Kidman and Joseph Fiennes, pictured left) are thrown into crisis. The film delves into the strained dysfunction of the family, heightened by Lily’s near compulsive promiscuity which we learn was the catalyst for their relocation.

Kidman’s portrayal of the frustrated mother, who becomes increasingly unstable, is terrific.

Monday, 7MATE, 9pm, MA15+ (2008) Paul Rudd is going from strength to strength in the cult comedy business, adding Knocked Up and I Love You, Man to the resume in recent years.

This farce, while not in the league of his other conquests, still gets the laughs as two energy drink reps are ordered into a big-brother program as community service (Christopher MintzPlasse, pictured right, plays little-brother Augie).

It’s a crude, rude and surprisingly funny comedy – everything you would expect from a Rudd flick.
