From the editor It feels weird to say this but welcome to 2026.

I’m hopeful everyone had a relaxing and enjoyable Christmas/New Year period.

After all the dramas, the horrors and the tragedies, which ended 2025, one can only dream that the next 12 months embraces a more subdued approach.

And, I guess in many ways, there is some renewed optimism in the region.

Three major road projects – the Hexham Straight Widening, Singleton Bypass and the Rankin Park to Jesmond section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass – are expected to open to traffic in 2026.

Those ventures, along with the M1 Pacific Motorway extension to Raymond Terrace slated for 2028, have been labelled a “game-changer” for local and visiting motorists alike.

Then there’s the mighty Newcastle Knights.

Under the leadership of new boss Peter Parr, mentor Justin Holbrook and key signings such as Dylan Brown, Sandon Smith, Trey Mooney and Pasami Saulo, the mood is quite positive within the club.

Like the late George Michael once said, “we gotta have faith”.

Entwine: A new way for everyone to experience the Hunter Valley region

A

new roaming food and wine experience has launched in the Hunter Valley, giving visitors an

alternative to the region’s traditional sitdown winery lunches.

Entwine, which began operating in December 2025, is a progressive dining concept which connects chef-run food trailers with wine tastings across four Hunter Valley wineries.

The experience allows guests to move between venues at their own pace, pairing street-style dishes with beverages at each stop rather than committing to a single meal.

The business currently operates across Calais Estate, First Creek Wines, De Bortoli Wines and Allandale Winery.

Each location hosts a dedicated food trailer, with menus designed to complement the wines produced at that venue.

Entwine is owned by husband-andwife chefs Joe and Tatiana Wojarski, who moved to the Hunter region in 2021 after overseas.

Restored Sensory Trail a massive hit at Hunter Wetlands Centre

new-look Sensory Trail has been given the “thumbs up” following its official unveiling at the Hunter

Wetlands Centre.

The result of a year-long restoration project, supported by students, volunteers and community groups, it now offers an accessible pathway and an immersive experience for everyone at the Shortland facility.

It’ll also boost habitat for native wildlife that depends on local plant species.

The engaging path, which is wheel accessible, includes an audio guide, interpretative signage and interactive discovery activities, too.

Project updates NEWCASTLE INNER CITY BYPASS The fifth and final section of the Newcastle Inner City Bypass – Rankin Park to Jesmond is taking shape before motorists and residents’ eyes.

The 3.4-kilometre project, a $488 million investment between the Australian and NSW governments, has been built between Rankin Park and Jesmond to the west of John Hunter Hospital.

It’ll provide traffic relief to the surrounding road network, in particular the existing route of Lookout Road, Croudace Street and Newcastle Road, which is currently used by about 40,000 to 60,000 vehicles each day. The new bypass will remove up to 30,000 daily.

When completed, motorists travelling north-south on the new section are expected to avoid up to 11 sets of traffic lights along the existing route, which is anticipated to reduce travel times by up to 80% during the morning and afternoon peaks.

RECENT MILESTONES • The project is nearing completion and is expected to open to traffic early to mid-2026 • The northern interchange continued its staged traffic switch after the successful conversion of the roundabout to signalised intersections at the end of 2024 • The last switch was completed in May 2025, which provided additional lane length for westbound traffic on Newcastle Road turning right onto the bypass, and removal of the

f you’re new here, let me first say HELLO, CIAO, BIENVENUE! My name is Jess and I’ve been so lucky to be contributing to the Newcastle Weekly since September 2023. I’m a radio host,

obsessed with the food and wine scene of the Hunter and most importantly, I have a two-year-old little girl named Lucia Margherita.

I love using this column to share what we get up to, what challenges we overcome together, the hijinx, the fails, the learnings and the laughs.

One little nugget of wisdom that landed in my lap over the Christmas break came from the mouth of a new friend. We were connecting over coffee and the topic of parenting and our children naturally came up. She also has one child, a daughter, who is only about a year older than Lucia. Once establishing how fabulously crazy both our girls are, we danced around the topic a little more on how full-on having just one kid is. I gingerly made the comment, “I just don’t know how people have more than one”. And my new friend, with her mind, body and soul, leapt to agreeance.

Every single one of my mum friends has either just had their second or is expecting their second in a few weeks. No word of a lie.

I have zero only-child parent friends left. So, to hear this new friend adamantly exclaim she thinks she is “one and done”, was miraculous.

But the best part was a little thought she shared around this that I’d never considered.

She said most of her mum friends who had a second child mainly gave the reason “so their first born would have someone to play with”. Now that is a very valid and very reasonable motivation for wanting another kid. I have heard it many times myself. But what my new friend went on to say was “I don’t want to ever stop playing with my kid.”

(There might be some veteran parents out there thinking, “yea talk to me when their 12 and 13 and then see how much you want to keep playing”.) But right now, I absolutely ate that up. As someone who has built FUN and NONSENSE into the very fabric of my parenting style – this idea of seeing yourself as the person who will dive into the pool with them, who will scavenge for hidden treasures, who will play cards and colour in – I simply adored that idea. newcastleweekly.com.au
