A space for harmless banter. It’s all just a bit of fun really, nothing meant by it.

In the wake of the #metoo and #TimesUp movements—and with a world leader who ‘banters’ that he can ‘grab them by the pussy’—Locker Room Talk is an urgent response to everyday misogyny.

In 2017, Gary McNair interviewed hundreds of men across the UK and asked them to talk about women. He has distilled these conversations into a verbatim play in which the men’s words are given to an all-female cast to perform.

A provocative piece of event theatre, this is a rehearsed reading of a script which demands to be heard.

Are we in control of our own story, or is it in our DNA? Kema is three years old when his family move from Zambia to Newcastle’s west end. It’s not easy. It starts with a story of new surroundings. A story about making a new life, and then watching that life fall apart. It’s a story about growing up in a world that doesn’t always accept you. It’s a story about self-belief, trusting your head, your heart and always chasing your dreams.

FROM THE HIGHLAND CLEARANCES TO THE OIL BOOM, THIS IS THE UNIVERSAL TALE OF HOW THE GREED OF A FEW BLIGHTS THE LIVES OF THE MANY. Add a generous dose of Scottish rebellion and irreverence. Throw in some live music and a riotous ceilidh—you’ve got yourself a rollicking great night out.

1973 was a big year for radical, working class theatre. Whilst Live Theatre began touring into social clubs around Newcastle, 7:84 Theatre Company were doing the same with The Cheviot… across Scotland. The two companies were part of the same struggle.

45 years on, this new production of The Cheviot… takes the story back to its roots by visiting village halls in the Highlands and Islands, echoing the play’s original 1970s tour. The play was a phenomenal success for Joe Douglas in 2015, before he became Live Theatre’s Artistic Director.

He returns to direct, bringing it to Live Theatre, the only English venue on the tour.

The 1612 trial of Agostino Tassi for the rape of baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi is restaged by Fringe First and Total Theatre Award winning company Breach Theatre.

Based on surviving court transcripts, this new play dramatises the seven month trial that gripped Renaissance Rome, and asks how much has changed in the last four centuries.

Blending myth, history and contemporary commentary, this is the story of how a woman took revenge through her art to become one of the most successful painters of her generation.

THE FRIENDS OF HARRY PERKINS CHRIS MULLIN in Conversation with JANET PLATER

The launch of The Friends of Harry Perkins, a new post-brexit thriller by former Labour MP, award winning diarist, novelist and writer Chris Mullin, whose political diaries were dramatised as the play A Walk On Part by Live Theatre.

Nearly forty years after the publication of his best-selling novel A Very British Coup, Chris will discuss writing this long awaited sequel. He’ll be in conversation with Janet Plater, daughter of Alan Plater, who originally adapted A Very British Coup for TV. Janet is currently writing a stage adaptation of A Very British Coup for Live Theatre.

Her latest release the self-titled album Irish Mythen, gained her recognition and awards from around the globe.

Live Youth Theatre is the largest free theatre and drama programme for young people between the ages of 11–25 in the north-east of England.

Young people aged between 11–25 can explore the world of spoken word with Dr Tracy Gillman.

Through regular weekly workshops young people meet new friends, develop selfconfidence and make original plays that are performed on the main stage at Live Theatre.

Youth Theatre sessions are delivered by some of the most exciting theatre makers in the region.

CHILDREN FREE LIVE TALES STORY WRITING WORKSHOPS FOR KS2

This action packed, fun filled workshop, enables children to create a totally new story and each child leaves with their own illustrated copy.

Live Tales invites KS2 classes to create an original story. Children set their imaginations whizzing with wonderful ideas and even reluctant writers embrace their creativity and craft a fantastic story. Ideas like Slimy Lightbulb or Ninja Granny, always get a ‘yes’ unlocking the brilliant imagination that children are naturally brimming with.

100% of teachers visiting in 2017/18 said the session helped develop their pupils’ confidence in writing.

SUMMER WORKSHOPS WITH LIVE THEATRE’S ARTIST IN RESIDENCE

Pupils craft a story, hone character and explore playwrighting.

Young people can explore new ways of making theatre and learn new skills during the summer holidays working with different artists from a range of creative disciplines each week.

KS3 sessions guide young people’s creative writing ability with fun, fast paced activities that build their skills: delving into character creation, dialogue, conflict and playwriting.

Through a series of playful exercises, young people work individually and in groups to make stories and scenes learning from Live Theatre’s expert storytellers and brilliant writing volunteers.

ARTIST WRITERS FOR 10 MINUTES TO…

Submit an original 10-minute play that responds to, and is inspired by, the theme of Stake a Claim. Interpretation is left entirely to the writer.

Live Theatre will select seven scripts to be rehearsed over the weekend of Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 July and performed on the Sunday evening.

Live Theatre’s volunteers are an incredible group of people who give a wealth of energy and enthusiasm to the work of the theatre.

There are opportunities to join Live Theatre’s thriving volunteers at Live Tales in Newcastle or at The Fire Station, Sunderland.

In Live Tales, volunteers can take a number of roles, providing encouragement one to one and in small groups to support children and help improve their writing and storytelling. Volunteer illustrators create drawings to accompany the children’s stories and some put their acting skills to use by playing Live Tales’ (very hard to please) Editor.

BOX OFFICE & TICKETS Box Office is open for in person and telephone bookings from Monday to Friday between 12 noon and 5.30pm and until 8pm when there is an evening performance. Opening hours on Saturdays and Sundays vary, depending on the performance schedule. Live Theatre is normally closed on Bank Holidays.

Theatre performances have a colour classification on different nights with a range of prices depending on the type of seat that you choose. When booking by phone or in person, Box Office staff will discuss your choice of seating and ticket prices with you.

There are also a limited number of lower priced side seats available for theatre performances in the main theatre, which may have a restricted view.

Concession tickets*: Students, those aged 25 and under, those on unemployment or disability benefits, and freelancers can get concession discounts on theatre performances.

Live’s Youth Theatre Members & Family Max Card holders: Get one £3 ticket for the young person, for selected performances subject to age suitability.

Carer Companions: A free ticket is available for a carer companion when they are essential to enable an individual to access the theatre, available from Box Office in person or by phone.

Over 65s & Equity Card Holders: Receive £2 off selected theatre performances (excludes PURPLE and GREEN priced performances).

Group/teacher/tutor discount: For every 10 tickets bought for the same performance get one additional ticket free.

Exchanges: Tickets can only be exchanged for another performance of the same show, up to 24 hours before the performance. A fee of £1 per ticket (up to a maximum of £5 per transaction) applies. Exchanges are subject to availability and at Live Theatre’s discretion.

Collection: Tickets can be mailed out, at an extra charge of £1, or can be collected from the Box Office free of charge.

* Only one concession per ticket applies. Proof of eligibility for any concession will be required on collection of tickets.

THEATRE SEATING PLAN

The Theatre, with a capacity of up to 170, offers unique surroundings in which to enjoy a performance – no one is ever far from the action. When booking tickets choose to sit in one of the three designated areas: Cabaret seating: Chairs around tables are closer to the actors with a social atmosphere. The Cabaret area is situated directly in front of the stage and is unreserved. Arrive at least 20 minutes before the start of the show to pick your seats.

Ground Floor and Balcony: Has more traditional rows of fixed theatre seating. Selected seats at the end of each row on the ground floor may have a restricted view and are offered at slightly lower prices.

Access to the balcony is on the first floor via the lift or stairs.

STUDIO The Studio accommodates 60 people, either in seats and cabaret tables, or a raised bank of fixed seating. It is an intimate setting to see new plays or live music.

Seats are unreserved, allocated on a first-come-firstserved basis when the doors open. It is recommended to arrive at least 20 minutes before the start of the show to choose your seat. Located on the third floor, the Studio can be accessed via the lift and stairs.

ASSISTED PERFORMANCES

OUR FACILITIES

Live Theatre offers a range of assisted performances aimed at improving the theatre experience for all our audience members. These services are marked with the appropriate symbol on the What’s On Calendar on pages P38 & P39 and are offered at no extra cost for service users and should not affect the performance for other audience members.

British Sign Language A BSL interpreter is positioned on or next to the stage to communicate in a non-verbal language.

Captioned The words spoken by the performers are displayed as text on a screen, on or next to the stage, similar to television subtitles.

Audio Described A live commentary of the action on stage is described through personal headphones, between words spoken by the characters.

Touch Tours To complement an audio described show, this is a hands-on tour of the set, describing props, costumes, characters and the visual style of the show, especially for visitors with visual impairments. Touch Tours are a separate event and have to booked separately. They usually take place an hour before the main performance.

Internal Hearing Aid Systems

An induction hearing loop system is available for all shows in the theatre for use with a visitor’s own hearing aid. The Theatre can also provide in ear monitors and receiver to amplify the sound on stage.

HOW TO FIND US Live Theatre is based on Broad Chare, just off Newcastle’s Quayside and behind Newcastle Law Courts.

The Q3 Quaylink bus stops just 2 minutes walk away outside the Law Courts. The Theatre is a 10 minutes walk from the Metro at Monument, Central Station or Manors.

There is free parking after 5pm (6pm Sundays) in nearby car parks at Quayside, Trinity Gardens and Sandgate.
