‘Dare to be the stone that causes the ripple in the pond; dare to be the master of your own making.’

Two eclectic evenings of theatre and comedy created and performed by Live Theatre’s acclaimed Youth Theatre.

Talented young people, supported by some of the region’s most talented theatre makers, showcase their work offering a fascinating insight into how young people experience their world and the world around them.

A selection of different plays are performed and presented by different groups from Live’s Youth Theatre each evening. Stand-up routines from homegrown young comedians from the Youth Theatre who also return after their hilarious debut last summer.

When it starts, you don’t realise it’s started. In a flash of ink you are transformed. It happens that fast. Belle is newly married. Planning a honeymoon. A life. A future. She knows nothing of spoons.

When a 13 year old lad goes AWOL in the rat run of Byker Wall, Gash and Jam are the only ones with any hope of finding him. Each and every breadcrumb’s laced with synthetic freedom. Because it’s 1995 and, even if Rat Boy’s mates had mobiles, they’d be as big as the bricks their Byker is built upon.

And then she is hit by a car. And the spoons are dictating her life. The spoons tell her what she can do, and what she can’t. But, how can she put her life back together when her spoons keep disappearing?

Inspired by the Greek chorus and the golden age of musical theatre, Paper. Scissors. Stone. tells the interwoven stories of three generations of women.

Continuing their long association with Live Theatre, this mesmerising and emotional tour-de force follows Open Clasp’s hugely successful Key Change, which premiered at Live Theatre before winning the Carol Tambor Best of Edinburgh Award in 2015 and transferring to off-Broadway, featuring as a New York Times Critics Pick in 2016.

Rattle Snake was created by Open Clasp and funded by Durham PCC and the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), to train front-line officers in better responding to sexual and domestic violence — coinciding with the change of law making coercive control in relationships a crime in 2015.

Live Theatre’s multi award winning Youth Theatre is the region’s largest FREE youth theatre, open and welcome to all.

11–13 years | Mon or Tues 14–16 years | Mon, Tues or Wed 17–25 years | Mon or Thurs

Youth Theatre members develop skills, build confidence, meet new people and work with some of the most exciting theatre makers and writers in the region. And for those who don’t want to perform on stage, there are many other ways to be involved in the Youth Theatre shows.

Live’s Youth Theatre is open to young people aged between 11 and 25, who meet on a weekly basis throughout the year.

Volunteers encourage and inspire young people to develop their imaginations and write stories. They provide encouragement, one-to-one and in small groups, and help the children to improve their writing and storytelling.

Volunteer illustrators create drawings to accompany the children’s stories, whilst some use their acting skills to act the character of the centre’s editor.

TICKET PRICE GUIDE Open for in person or telephone bookings from Monday to Friday between 12 noon and 5.30pm and until 8pm when there is an evening performance. Opening hours on Saturdays and Sundays vary, depending on the performance schedule. Live Theatre is normally closed on Bank Holidays.

Theatre performances have a colour classification on different nights with a range of prices depending on the type of seat that you choose. When booking by phone or in person, Box Office staff will discuss your choice of seating and ticket prices with you.

There are also a limited number of lower priced side seats available for theatre performances in the main theatre, which may have a restricted view.

Concession tickets*: Students, those aged 25 and under, those on unemployment or disability benefits can get discounts on certain theatre performances. * Only one concession per ticket applies. Proof of eligibility for any concession will be required on collection of tickets.

Live’s Youth Theatre Members & Family Max Card holders: Get one £3 ticket for the young person, for selected performances subject to age suitability Carer Companions: If a carer companion is essential to enable an individual to access the theatre, a 2 for 1 ticket is available through Box Office in person or by phone.

Over 60s & Equity Card Holders: Receive £2 off selected theatre performances (excludes PURPLE and GREEN priced performances).

Group/teacher/tutor discount: For every 10 tickets bought for the same performance get one additional ticket free.

Exchanges: Tickets can only be exchanged for another performance of the same show, up to 24 hours before the performance. A fee of £1 per ticket (up to a maximum of £5 per transaction) applies. Exchanges are subject to availability and at Live Theatre’s discretion.

Collection: Tickets can be mailed out, at an extra charge of £1, or can be collected from the Box Office free of charge.

The Theatre, with a capacity of up to 170, offers unique surroundings in which to enjoy a performance – no one is ever far from the action. When booking tickets choose to sit in one of the three designated areas:

The Studio accommodates 60 people, either in seats and cabaret tables, or a raised bank of fixed seating. It is an intimate setting to see new plays or live music.

Cabaret seating: Chairs around tables offer an intimate view of the performance with a social atmosphere. The Cabaret area is situated directly in front of the stage and is unreserved. Arrive at least 20 minutes before the start of the show to pick your seats.

Seats are unreserved, allocated on a firstcome-first-served basis when the doors open. It is recommended to arrive at least 20 minutes before the start of the show to choose your seat. Located on the third floor, the Studio can be accessed via the lift and stairs.

Ground floor and Balcony: Has more traditional rows of fixed theatre seating. The two seats at each end of the rows on the ground floor may have a restricted view and are offered at slightly lower prices. Access to the balcony is on the first floor via the lift or stairs.

You can select your own seat when booking online for a performance in the theatre.

ASSISTED PERFORMANCES

OUR FACILITIES

Live Theatre offers a range of assisted performances aimed at improving the theatre experience for all our audience members. These services are marked with the appropriate symbol on the Calendar on P34 & P35 and are offered at no extra cost for service users and should not affect the performance for other audience members.

British Sign Language A BSL interpreter is positioned on or next to the stage to communicate in a non-verbal language.

Captioned The words spoken by the performers are displayed as text on a screen, on or next to the stage, similar to television subtitles.

Audio Described A live commentary of the action on stage is described through personal headphones, between words spoken by the characters.

Touch Tours To complement an audio described show, this is a hands-on tour of the set, describing props, costumes, characters and the visual style of the show, especially for visitors with visual impairments. Touch Tours are a separate event and have to booked separately. They usually take place an hour before the main performance.

Internal Hearing Aid Systems

An induction hearing loop system is available for all shows in the theatre for use with a visitors own hearing aid. The Theatre can also provide in ear monitors and receiver to amplify the sound on stage.

HOW TO FIND US Live Theatre is based on Broad Chare, just off Newcastle’s Quayside and behind Newcastle Law Courts.

The Q3 Quaylink bus stops just 2 minutes walk away outside the Law Courts. The Theatre is a 10 minutes walk from the Metro at Monument, Central Station or Manors.

There is free parking after 5pm (6pm Sundays) in nearby car parks at Trinity Gardens and Sandgate.
