Throughout the summer of 2025, Horizons students were encouraged to live our theme: Be the Change. Each day, they were reminded that even the smallest actions—like choosing kindness, trying something new, or speaking up for a friend—have the power to shape the world around them. From the first day of swim lessons to the final moments of our recognition assemblies, our community of learners discovered that change often begins with a dream and the courage to make it a reality.
When asked about the changes they’d like to make in the world, students had BIG ideas. Some focused on “creating a world without bullies” while others dreamt about “protecting all the creatures in the ocean.” Like small drops of water that create a ripple effect in a pond, our students understand that small steps toward change can have profound results.
Horizons faculty and staff are changemakers as well. This year, we celebrated Cristina Rosado and Owen Sandoval, each for 20 years of dedicated service, and we honored Jackie Roberson for a remarkable 30 years of service to Horizons. Throughout those many years, these three members of the Horizons family have inspired positive change in the lives of thousands of students.
We also celebrated the life of long-time Horizons champion and change agent Annie Cohen. Always there for the children of Horizons, Annie’s decades of dedication now live on in the Annie Cohen Library—a collection of books curated in her honor that will benefit students for years to come. We also pause and remember two other loyal supporters we lost this year: Roy Pfeil and George Post, whose immense contributions will live on through Horizons.
As the year continues, I invite you to join us in living our theme: Be the Change. By making a gift to Horizons at NCCS today, you are changing the lives of nearly 400 children from Norwalk and Stamford. Your support ensures that they will continue to have the tools, experiences, and opportunities they need to succeed in school, in their communities, and in life.
Together, we can Be the Change our students need—and the change we all wish to see in the world. Thank you for believing in Horizons and in the extraordinary potential of every child.
With gratitude,

Leanne Tormey, EdD Executive Director

TODAY I PROMISE…
To be kind, stay strong, and do my best in learning. With these hands, with this heart, with this mind… I CAN DO ANYTHING!

Behind every student’s success stands a community of visionaries who believe in our mission and help bring it to life. This year, Horizons lost one of our most dedicated champions with the passing of ANNIE COHEN.
Annie and her beloved husband, Richard, were active champions of Horizons from its very beginning in 1964, working with founder George Stevens and with Lyn McNaught, the first Executive Director. For decades, Annie’s unwavering devotion to the program was evident in every role in which she served, from Horizons Board Chair to a mentor to individual students. Annie believed deeply that education was the pathway to long-term economic security, making it her life’s mission to support and expand Horizons on the NCCS campus and beyond. Annie once said: “It doesn’t get any better than being surrounded by happy children that are loved and fulfilled every minute of their Horizons day.” Her passion, generosity, and steadfast support left a lasting impact on our community and the lives of countless students.
This past July, a group of friends, board members, mentees, and staff gathered to wave off the summer program buses and celebrate Annie’s extraordinary legacy. The event was filled with heartfelt stories and reflections, leaving everyone moved and inspired. In honor of her lifelong love of literacy, we established the Annie Cohen Library. Thanks to the generosity of our community, the shelves are now filled with wonderful books that Horizons students will enjoy for years to come, a lasting and meaningful tribute to a woman who so deeply believed in the power of education.

“ Horizons is my happy place. I feel truly honored to witness the joy and excitement of our kindergarten through ninth-grade students as they step off the buses each summer morning—filled with energy, enthusiasm, and anticipation.
—JACKIE ROBERSON

This summer, we had the opportunity to recognize three treasured faculty and staff members for their long-term dedication to Horizons at NCCS. Congratulations to CRISTINA ROSADO, OWEN SANDOVAL, and JACKIE ROBERSON for their immense contributions to our students and community throughout their many years at Horizons.
CRISTINA ROSADO celebrated her 20th anniversary with Horizons at NCCS this past summer. As a Lead Teacher in the Junior Program, Cristina is a warm and familiar presence who has found her home working with fifth-grade students. Her project-based lessons engage students in all parts of the learning process, encouraging creativity and strengthening their public speaking skills, as exemplified in their astronaut projects. Cristina does an excellent job preparing students for their important transition to the Senior Program.
OWEN SANDOVAL, Horizons Camping and Sports Director, was recognized for 20 years of service this past summer. As a proud alumnus, Owen returned to Horizons as a Teaching Assistant, working in various roles before finding his niche, combining his passion for sports education with his experience as a coach at Westhill High School. Each year, he leads eighth- and ninth-grade students on an extendedday camp-out, an experience that includes games, team-building, and making s’mores.
JACKIE ROBERSON is a true legend at Horizons at NCCS as the Senior Program Dean of Students and Culture. Jackie is also a social worker at Norwalk High School, where her passion for students is evident in all that she does. Horizons is truly a Roberson family affair— Jackie’s children Jupiter and Jasmin are proud alumni of the program, as was her late daughter, Lavone. Today, Jackie’s daughters Jasmin and Ashley continue the tradition as Lead Teachers in the summer program. Jackie has enriched the lives of countless students during her 30-year tenure, helping prepare them for every stage of their high school journey, to ensure that they graduate, with a plan for what comes after high school.
