Young boy drowned at pool party

n 11-year old boy has been laid to rest after drowning at a friend’s pool party in southwest Michigan.

Dayton Hildebrand, after his Saturday funeral in LaPorte, was buried about 15 miles to the south at Hanna Cemetery.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, Hildebrand was at a friend’s birthday party on September 15 in Howard Township.

Police said there were children in the water when Hildebrand was spotted at the bottom of the pool.

Several of the kids brought the boy back to surface.

CPR was started by some of the parents at the scene then paramedics, once they arrived, took over the life saving efforts and transported the boy to Lakeland Hospital in Niles where he was pronounced dead, police said.

“Any time you have a child die, it’s unfortunate and tragic,’’ said Capt. Tom Jacobs of the Cass County Sheriff’s Office.

The circumstances leading up to his drowning and other questions like how long he had been at the bottom of the pool before his discovery were still under investigation, Jacobs said.

According to the American Red Cross, children in swimming pools should be supervised at all times and a responsible person should be designated to watch the water when people are using the pool.

Young or inexperienced swimmers should also wear a flotation device, according to the American Red Cross.

The boy was a student at Howard Ellis Elementary School in Niles where his father, Nicholas, resides.

His mother, Kelly, lives in Hamlet, according to his obituary.

he Greater Bridgman Area Chamber and Growth Alliance (CGA) regrets to announce the cancellation of the Weko Wine Fest at Weko Beach Saturday, Sept. 29.

Due to unforeseen issues with financial backing and vendor participation, the CGA is unable to create a successful fall festival.

Police looking for false reporter Eau Claire High School

E

very ounce was real, but merely fool’s gold in the hands of a thief with a gambling problem.

Veronica Allen is charged in LaPorte Circuit Court with corrupt business influence.

She could face an up to sixyear prison sentence on the level 5 felony charge.

Those are the accusations faced by a 63-year old woman, apparently without a penny left from the stolen gold coins she allegedly sold to feed her addiction.

According to court documents, the LaPorte woman stole 49 gold coins from a friend over an 18 month period.

The thefts occurred when the defendant was housesitting until the victim returned from out of town.

Police said Allen went to a pawn shop with one ✩ or two coins at a time.

The total amount received from all of the coins topped $63,000, police said.

On Friday September 7 at approximately 3:55 PM the Berrien County Public Safety Dispatch Center received a 9-1-1 call from a male subject stating that there was a teenage male in the bathroom of the High School with a rifle. The caller did not identify himself and stated that his phone was losing power.

Grand Beach Village Council updated on 42-acre grant LINDA HENDERSON IN VILLAGE OF GRAND BEACH

hris Khorey of McKenna and Associates presented an update on the Village of Grand Beach’s Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund (MDNRTF) grant application for the acquisition of a 42-acre nature preserve at the Grand Beach Village Council’s Wednesday, Sept. 9, meeting.

Khorey reported that the application received 330 points out of a possible 550 points and that 150 points were not eligible to the village. He said there was a potential for 70 additional points that could be gained by a programming and marketing campaign if they reached out to the community at large with a promotional campaign, an additional 20 points if the preserve fit into the green infrastructure plan of the Southwest Michigan Planning Commission and an additional 30 points if a collaboration agreement for planned protection and maintenance was made with possibly Chikaming Open Lands (COL).

McKenna said he will follow up with these additional opportunities.

Under new business the council agreed to amend its application request to the MDNRTF in the amount of $2.4 million.

The application includes a 25 percent match. Matching funds will come from $150,500 that will be pledged from Friends of the 42 Acres Grand Beach Nature Preserve; $312,000 from a 10 percent donation received from Grand Beach Land Development, the current land owners and $337,500 from the village’s General Fund. If more funding becomes available, the village match amount can be revised.

Building Commissioner Jim Bracewell reported that the new home construction is going well and there are seven new homes under construction in the village. Parks and Beaches Commissioner Frank Giglio reported that while the beaches have suffered due to high water levels, there are several areas near the pier and near the pump house where people can enjoy some beach.

Village President and Street Commissioner Paul Leonard, Jr. reported on the village receiving short notice on the closing of the Amtrak railroad crossing. He stated that they were notified late Friday that the crossing would be closed on Monday and that it had been very inconvenient and was poorly marked. He thanked Chief Dan Schroeder for getting the notice out to the residents. Leonard added that the village has no control over what or when the railroad work is done.

Under police matters, Debbie Lindley and Schroeder urged people to keep valuables out of their cars and keep car doors locked, as break-ins have continued to occur.

Schroeder also reminded residents to drop off unwanted medications in Village Hall’s receptacle box for disposal.

A recent concern regarding the 9-1-1 calls going to Indiana rather than to Berrien County, which delays response time, was also discussed. In addition to identifying that the respondents need to come to Michigan, residents can sign up for a smart phone app to identify location at www.safety.smart911.com.

Golf Commissioner Blake O’Halloran stated that the golf course had matched the 2016 revenues, which was a “good year.” If the weather continued to be nice, he said he also looked forward to a strong September.

Regarding the revetment at the pump house, O’Halloran said that protecting the beach access and the pump house with rock was very important. He stated that there are two

plans to ensure that there is water for the golf course. Plan A was to continue to protect the pump house, which is the source of the water intake for the golf course irrigation system. Plan B is to identify an alternative source of water if the pump house became inoperable.

At this time, drilling wells is one way to obtain water.

It was determined by Peerless Midwest that there are locations on the course that could be drilled; however, the quality of the water has not yet been determined, nor is the pressure of the water yet available. The cost of drilling a well is approximately $13,500 per well. Possibly seven wells would be needed to be drilled, which would cost $241,000.

Another alternative is to create a retention pond from which to pump the water, which may require fewer wells on the course. On a daily basis, 180,000 gallons of water are required to irrigate the course, which O’Halloran said is a “massive amount of water.” The pumps would require that 200 gallons of water be distributed per minute.

The council may consider a committee to study the matter. John Deaner, who has experience in irrigating his former fruit farm, volunteered to head the committee.

Golf course etiquette was also discussed. When playing with slower groups, residents were advised to allow others to play through so that the game could keep moving at an acceptable pace.

The council also discussed a new alarm system for the pump house, which would call Superintendent Bob Dabbs in the event of a flood. The cost of that system would be $30 per month and would include a $20 phone fee.

Councilmembers agreed to replace the propeller for the leaf blower at a cost of $8,000, which is a budgeted item.

Councilmembers learned that the street department painted/striped and sealed the pickleball/basketball court and removed the one-way sign on Lakeview and Maple.

Leonard stated that the village’s application to change minor street designations to major streets in order to qualify for State Act 51 street money has been reviewed.

The state determined that changes from a minor road to a major one was Grand Beach Road from US 12 to Deer Path; however, Perkins to Golf to Deer Path, which is the road that connects the south end of the village to the north end, will remain designated a minor road due to the slow traffic requirements. The village will receive major road funding for 3.41 miles of major roads and minor funding for 8.32 miles of local roads.

The council approved the draft franchise resolution with Indiana & Michigan Power, which is a 30-year renewal plan to provide power to the village.

The health insurance renewal for employees, which has an increase of 4.97 percent, was approved. The council felt this was a great deal for the village and was surprised that it was not a higher increase.

A payment to Donkersloot and Sons for revetment work at three locations High Point, Robin Lane and Lakeview in the amount of $33,431.55 was approved.

Hall rentals for Blake O’Halloran for a Celebration of Life held Sept. 8 for Nancy Anderson was approved, as well as the use of the hall for a breakfast Sept. 30 for Angela Trainor.

Shelia McGinnis reaffirmed the Friends of the 42 Acres Grand Beach Nature Preserve commitment, stating that whatever the grant’s outcome, the residents wished to acquire the land for future generations and pledges are still needed to help with the acquisition.

epresentative Kim LaSata, Republican candidate for the 21st State Senate District, announced today two candidate forums in Berrien County in which she plans to participate.

The first will be the Berrien RESA Candidate Forum Monday, October 8, 2018 at 8am at the Administrative Center at Berrien RESA located at 711 St. Joseph Avenue, Berrien Springs. This will be hosed by the Berrien/Cass School Boards Association, the Lewis Cass Intermediate School District, and the Berrien Regional Education Service Agency.

The second will be the Niles New Tech Candidate Forum Friday, October 26, 2018 at 5pm at the Niles Library located at 620 E Main St, Niles.

Niles New Tech is a project based learning school and their debate will feature student moderators.

Vice President Joe Biden to open The Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan Speakers Series 75th anniversary season

T

he Economic Club of Southwestern Michigan Speakers Series, hosted

by The Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College in Benton Harbor, Michigan, welcomes Vice President Joe Biden, the 47th Vice President of the United States, Tuesday, October 16, 2018. He opens the Economic Club’s 75th anniversary season as he shares his perspectives on a range of nationally relevant topics during An Evening with Vice President Joe Biden.

As a senator from Delaware for 36 years, he was a leading architect of domestic policy on some of the most pressing issues facing the country. Then-Senator Biden served as chairman or ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee for 17 years, and was a preeminent voice on criminal justice issues, including authoring both the landmark 1994 Crime Act and the Violence Against Women Act. He has worked relentlessly since the passage of the Violence Against Women Act in 1994 to change the culture around domestic violence and sexual assault, and protect and strengthen victims’ rights.

As chairman or ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for 12 years, then-Senator Biden played a pivotal role in shaping U.S. foreign policy. He has been at the forefront of issues and legislation related to terrorism, weapons of mass destruction, post-Cold War Europe, the Middle East, and Southwest Asia.

As the 47th vice president of the United States, he oversaw the implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which was integral to rescuing the economy from the brink of another Great Depression. The Recovery Act added 2 million jobs to the economy and made an unprecedented investment in America’s infrastructure. According to the nonpartisan Government Accountability Office, under Vice President Biden’s oversight, more than $800 billion dollars were injected into the economy with less than two-tenths-of-onepercent waste, fraud, or abuse – making it one of the most efficient government programs in history.

As Vice President, he also chaired the Middle-Class Task Force, an administration-wide effort to improve the everyday lives and livelihoods of working men and women, and oversaw the administration’s Skills Initiative to improve federal workforce training programs. He authored “Ready to Work: JobDriven Training and American Opportunity,” a report to the President on how best to ensure American workers are trained for the jobs of the 21st century.

Vice President Biden also led the administration’s efforts to implement meaningful reforms to reduce gun violence in this country, which resulted in federal actions aimed at strengthening the background check system and addressing mental health issues linked to gun violence, among others.

In January 2017, President Obama awarded Vice President Biden the Presidential Medal of Freedom, with Distinction — the highest civilian honor in the U.S. Since leaving the White House, Vice President Biden continues his legacy of expanding opportunity for all with the creation of the Biden Foundation, the University of Pennsylvania Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement, and the Biden Institute for Domestic Policy at the University of Delaware. TWO POT BILLS PAVE THE WAY FOR BETTER HEALTH RESEARCH, DECRIMINALIZATION

he House Judiciary Committee favorably reported the Medical Cannabis Research Act Sept. 13, sending it to the full House for a vote.

The bill, H.R. 5634, was introduced in the spring of 2018 by a newcomer to Congress, Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.), who stated: “This legislation, the first cannabisrelated legislation considered by a Republican-led Judiciary Committee in history, makes it easier for researchers to study medical cannabis, and understand its potential uses, benefits, and risks.”

“Currently, cannabis research is stymied by laws that unfairly prevent many of America’s great research institutions from studying cannabis, despite its promise as a treatment for nausea, epilepsy, muscular sclerosis, and a host of other conditions,” the former Florida state representative said in a prepared statement.

Gaetz added that “cannabis has the potential to mitigate opioid abuse and addiction, and early studies indicate that it may even help veterans who suffer from PTSD. By giving research institutions ‘safe harbor’ — keeping them safe from legal retribution — the [legislation] will greatly assist American researchers unlock cures that cannabis may provide. Just last month, the FDA approved a cannabis-derived medicine for certain types of epilepsy. Future research is likely to unlock other cures.”

Encouraged by the bill’s passage at the committee level in the Republican-controlled Congress, which only a few short years ago would have been nearly impossible given the skepticism about pot among those “law and order” Republicans who’ve supported the war on drugs, Gaetz went on explain the “catch 22” that has bottled up progress on this front.

“For too long, Congress has faced a dilemma with cannabis-related legislation: we cannot reform cannabis law without researching its safety, its efficacy, and its medical uses—but we cannot perform this critical research without first reforming cannabis law. The Medical Cannabis Research Act helps break that logjam, allowing researchers to study medical cannabis without fear of legal jeopardy…This vote will help unlock American innovation and discovery, and help researchers

bring the cures of the future a little closer to reality.”

In a nation with a patchwork quilt of state-level “reefer” laws (with some having legalized pot only for medicinal use and others for recreational use) fundamental changes at the federal level could simplify things, although the risk of monopoly control by Big Pharma may very well increase. Yet, many a conversation among Americans for years has covered a recurring question: Why not just treat marijuana like alcohol (or cigarettes) and legalize, regulate and tax it?

Well, under another bill in Congress, the Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol Act (H.R. 1841), that very thing is under consideration.

Introduced in the spring of 2017, the bill would decriminalize marijuana by directing the Department of Justice “to issue a final order that removes marijuana in any form from all schedules of controlled substances under the Controlled Substances Act (CSA),” a Library of Congress summary states.

Interestingly, this bill—while it lacks the momentum of H.R. 5634— also would eliminate marijuana from regulation under various federal laws, including the Controlled Substances Import and Export Act, the 1986 National Forest System Drug Control Act, the federal Wiretap Act, and the 1998 Office of National Drug Control Policy Reauthorization Act of 1998.

And, in the spirit of Gaetz’s bill, it “subjects marijuana to the provisions that apply to intoxicating liquors under the Original Packages Act, the Webb-Kenyon Act, and the Victims of Trafficking and Violence Protection Act of 2000; and distilled spirits under the Federal Alcohol Administration Act,” H.R. 1841’s summary adds.

Furthermore, under the bill, the Food and Drug Administration “shall have the same authorities with respect to marijuana as it has for alcohol,” the summary of H.R. 1841 goes on to explain, indicating that various fundamental changes are imminent if this bill is passed into law. “Functions of the Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration relating to marijuana enforcement shall be transferred to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF).

The ATF is renamed the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Marijuana, Firearms and Explosives.”

ew Buffalo Business Association (NBBA) members heard about the organization’s future plans and celebrated a great summer season at their annual meeting during Wine Down Thursday, which took place at Whittaker Woods Thursday, Sept. 20.

Members enjoyed delicious hors d’ oeuvres and got a sneak peek at the newly opened deck overlooking the golf course. (Rumor has it that weekend dining may soon be offered at the clubhouse.)

NBBA President Karen Poff and Executive Director and strategic planner Adam Burck gave an overview of the NBBA’s goals and presented the organization’s improved mission statement.

Everyone in attendance agreed that New Buffalo’s new, beautified downtown streetscape has improved walkability and the business climate on North Whittaker Street. Members also agreed that the Wednesday night Classic Car Cruise-in and the Thursday evening Farmer’s Market were big draws to the shops and restaurants.

Poff stated that the NBBA hopes to plan additional smaller events next year to attract people to town during the slower spring, fall and winter seasons and the busy summer months. The members were also pleased with the newly revamped information booth at the corner of Merchant and Whittaker streets.

The organization’s goals that were outlined throughout the meeting were to review and create more value for its members; to explore funding for an Economic Impact Study of events for New Buffalo; to continue to strengthen its relationships with the city and township to create more positive activities and events to support the community year-round; to assist the Downtown Development Authority and Corridor Improvement Authority with long-term program initiatives; and to help to support other area non-profits.

Board members include Vice President Emma Brewster, David’s Deli proprieter; Treasurer Lisa Gawron, a partner in Hidden Gem; Production Manager Cathi Rogers; Katie Maroney, owner of Equilibrium Fitness; Lori Robinson, MI Massage Studios; and Toni Morris, a partner in Yellowbird Vacation Rentals.

Upcoming NBBA-sponsored events include: the 13th annual Harvest and Wine Fest, which will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, at Lions Park on the lakefront; the Halloween parade and trick-or-treating, which will be held Sunday, Oct. 28; the holiday parade and activities, which will be held the Saturday following Thanksgiving, Nov. 24, to kick off the holidays and the Shop Small campaign; and the annual Gnome on the Roam Hunt, which will take place at participating businesses from Nov. 24 through Dec. 15.

School board members learn about savings through Sun FundED

New Buffalo Area Schools Board of Education members heard more about this unique opportunity when Kelly Hipskind and Patrick Poer, cofounders of the service company, Sun FundED, made a presentation at their Monday, Sept. 24, meeting.

Hipskind called Sun FundED the “first full service, all-inclusive, all in one solar company in the country that we know of that focuses exclusively on solar for schools.” He added that they’ve been working on the company for 12 months and officially launched it two and a half months ago.

Hipskind explained that, because Sun FundED owns, operates and finances everything, the district doesn’t have to “put out the capital for the solar array.”

Hipskind added that they bundled their services and that they weren’t a company that makes money on installing the solar panels and or on selling the panels, as they handled the RFP/RFI process and bid everything out to banks and solar installers.

Hipskind said that New Buffalo would be greatly maximizing its benefit by working together with area schools.

“We make our money not just from doing one building - we look to try and get 10 to 15 districts at a time and then we can go out and bid on your behalf,” he said.

While it may fluctuate, Hipskind said that, based on the number of panels that were used, the estimated average bill cost would be approximately $2 million; however, the district wouldn’t be providing that cost but would only be providing an up-front $1 investment. Sun FundED would be putting the financing together and investing it and owning and operating the solar farm on the district’s behalf. Sun FundED would cover the district’s assembly expenses for the solar array.

Sun FundED would work on New Buffalo Area School district’s behalf with its network of bankers, investors, suppliers, installers and utilities with regards to the Solar-as-a-Service (SAAS) solution.

Due to there being only so much land and roof availability, Hipskind did say that they wouldn’t be “offsetting” all of their power and that the district would still have some money going to Indiana Michigan Power.

By utilizing Sun FundED, the district would be seeing an approximate $27,000 in savings. Hipskind cautioned that this number could change based on the location of the solar panels, which would be determined after the district signed the Letter of Intent (LOI). Sun FundED would then begin the bidding process.

With Sun FundED, Hipskind said the district would see $1 million in savings, with the $1 up-front investment. There would also be a one-time developer fee from the capital partners for structuring and closing the deal. In addition, there would also be a monthly fixed, SAAS management fee that would be paid by the school.

Sun FundED’s educational component was also important. Hipskind said they hoped to place the panels in close proximity to the schools’ entrances so the students could throw sand and dirt on them and interact with them. In addition, Hipskind said they would provide an energy dashboard, an educational kiosk in the schools’ lobbies and companies that would aid teachers in developing a curriculum around the panels.

Also at the meeting, board members approved a $19,020.36 change order, payable to Rolling Prairie Excavating, for the elementary parking lot project.

Board members accepted the $12,767.02 bid from Dennis Deutscher Construction, for the elementary sidewalk addition project.

Chris Sokol, the president of the New Buffalo Education Association, reported that collaboration time Tuesdays and Thursdays between the teachers at the elementary and middle/high school has been successful. Recently, the board had approved a later start and dismissal time at both schools to allow for such a time to occur. At the elementary school, Sokol said that teachers were using the time for field trip planning as well as to work with their respective elementary specialists. Sokol said that there was curriculum discussion occurring “across grade levels” on different topics. Technology coaches were also meeting with the technology department.

Shelley Wheeler, accounting and yearbook teacher, thanked Lesley Green, New Buffalo Savings Bank marketing relationship coordinator, for being behind the effort to purchase workbooks for the students in the high school’s personal finance program.

Aglaja is a student at Michigan City High School but attended New Buffalo High School before her family’s move. T

he longstanding rivalry was a bit different this year, but with a victory just as satisfying for the River Valley High School varsity football team.

Friday night, The Mustangs trounced the South County Cougars 59-18.

It was a home game for River Valley, now 3-2 on the season.

The Cougars are 0-5 in the first year of merged football programs from New Buffalo and Bridgman.

Both teams will tangle again October 19 in a home game for the Cougars.

The next game for the Mustangs, Friday night, is at Lake Michigan Catholic while the Cougars next play at Brandywine.

The New Buffalo/Bridgman squad, despite its first season struggles, offered some encouragement on offense scoring the most points of any game of the season.

ne of my friend’s daughters turned 26 last week, and somehow or another the conversation turned to the things that weren’t around when she was born. When you stop to think about it, so many things we take for granted today weren’t even on our radar then. No wonder some of us “old school” people have trouble keeping up with the times.

One of the things I do in my spare time is drive for a ride sharing company in an industry that wasn’t even around ten years ago. When this year began, there were over 100,000 vehicles registered for ride sharing services. Last week I transported three couples who were in Chicago to see the Laver Cup tennis tournament. They were all staying at Short term rentals like Airbnb. The estimates vary, but in Chicago alone there are probably more than eight thousand homes being used for this purpose. Ten years ago, there were few if any. The second edition of the tournament drew 93,584 tennis fans to the United Center to witness team Europe eke out a victory over team World in a contest much like the Ryder Cup in golf.

We constantly see people walking around the city paying no attention to their surroundings because they’re engrossed with their cell phones.

These phones, as we know them today, weren’t around less than twenty five years ago. The first iPhone wasn’t invented until 2004. Cell phones have become such an integral part of our lives, it’s hard to remember when they were nonexistent. The advances in cellular phones lead to one of my favorite things, music streaming. These apps have turned the music industry inside out and I’m still not sure if it’s fair to the performers or not, but music fans are treated to an infinite number of songs for less than the cost of a cd a month. Another app that has changed the way we live are the navigation apps. Some of us remember road atlases and stopping in gas stations to pick up local maps. Along came Mapquest to begin the change, and now we have a variety of choices to assist us in getting around.

Another app that takes up a lot of our time is Facebook, which was formed in 2004. Many of us find it hard to remember when it wasn’t around. Finally, less than thirty five years ago cable television came to Chicago.

I could go on, but suffice it to say that the world is changing rapidly.

The rapidity of change makes it imperative for me to share the following information with you. The Cubs have to hold on for one more week and the Bears are less than twenty percent of the way into their season but for today, they’re in first. To tell you the truth, I am amazed and thrilled. Hopefully, I can say the same thing next week.

n the verge of the autumnal equinox, nature lovers converged on a sprawling farm tucked away in the southwest Michigan countryside.

For the second year in a row, guests gathered at Granor Farm for Chikaming Open Lands’ (COL) ninth annual Barn Benefit, which was held Saturday, Sept. 22.

Guests chatted inside and outside of the barn and inhaled the fresh air, which was tinged with an early fall chill. Servers weaved in and out of the groups of people while holding silver trays of appetizers from Froehlich’s in Three Oaks, Michigan.

COL Executive Director Ryan Postema thanked everyone for attending the event and helping to raise funds for COL, which he said has a mission to “conserve and preserve the land.”

The environmental education program, which includes third, fourth and fifth graders from the River Valley, New Buffalo and (new this year) Bridgman school districts, is a partnership with the Field Museum in Chicago and allows children to explore COL’s nature preserves. “This (program) is something when we think about who’s going to be the next conservationists… I’m relatively young, but I think about who is going to fill my shoes in 20 years, 30 years - those are the kids in elementary school right now,” Postema said.

Cherry Beach UNdevelopment fund

C

herry Beach was donated to Chikaming Township by the Warren Family in 1922. Today the Township has a unique opportunity to purchase and preserve a beautiful, undeveloped parcel of land immediately adjacent to Cherry Beach. The Cherry Beach Committee, a grassroots group of concerned citizens, is helping the Township raise funds and public awareness. This acquisition would protect nearly 3 acres of woods and increase the Park’s current lakefront by more than 2.5 times, from 253 feet to 657 feet. We have 7 miles of lakefront in Chikaming Township. Only 2% is public. This acquisition will protect this land from private development forever.

The seller is asking more than $4 million. The Township has applied for a Michigan Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund grant (MNRTF) that, if awarded, will supply 75% of the purchase price. The final sale price will be determined by appraisals paid for by the MNRTF. To qualify for the grant, we must raise the remaining 25% of the purchase price (or approximately $1 million) with private donations identified through pledges and other grants no later than October 1, 2018.

We are well on our way to success. A $250,000 dollar for dollar challenge grant has been awarded by The Carls Foundation through the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy (SWMLC). A $50,000 challenge grant has been awarded by the Upton Foundation. Several other grants have been applied for through The Berrien Community Foundation. The grants alone won’t get us to the 25% match so we seek personal contributions as well. We need your financial support.

Harvest & Wine Festival to usher in fall on the lakefront

he 13th annual New Buffalo Harvest & Wine Festival will be held from noon until 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, on the lakefront at Lions Park in New Buffalo.

In celebration of the harvest in Southwest Michigan, this one-day event will boast award-winning wines from regional vineyards and craft beers and hard ciders under one roof. The event will be tented, so festivalgoers can come out and stay all day come rain or shine.

Tastings and wine by the glass will be available from more than 60 regional wineries and six craft breweries, as well as 10 hard ciders by wineries. This year’s winery and brewery lineup includes 12 Corners Vineyards, Baroda Founders Wine Cellar, Domaine Berrien Cellars, Free Run Cellars, Lazy Ballerina Winery, Round Barn Winery, Tabor Hill Winery, Lemon Creek Winery, Warner Vineyards, Burgdorf’s Winery, White Pine Winery, Vineyard 2121, St. Julian Wine Company, Fenn Valley Vineyards, Lake Michigan Vintners, Gravity Winery, Great Mead Hall Cider: Crane’s Pie Pantry Restaurant & Winery, Virtue Ciders Breweries: Round Barn Brewery & Public House, Tapistry Brewing, Silver Harbor Brewing Co. and Saugatuck Brewing Co. “R

etire” - that’s a word I have never liked.

For me, the “r” word has all kinds of ageist connotations and imagery that mean “the end.” Look at some of the definitions MerriamWebster offers: 1: to withdraw from action, 2: to withdraw especially for privacy, 3: to move back - recede, 4: to conclude one’s working or professional career and (here’s my favorite) 5: to go to bed.

That’s not the way I see it. Instead, I’m just done chasing the illusive work-life balance and going for life.

Choosing to not work anymore makes me giddy with all the freedom it brings. Each morning when I wake up, I am the master of my own time. This is a time of newness and beginnings.

Sure, this journey sometimes has its challenges. In working life, tasks and duties and daily routines are well defined. Without a job to dictate my schedule, there are 50 or more extra hours a week to fill. It’s a new normal that can catch me off guard seeking structure, purpose and community.

The best days are when I slip into a creative flow and pursue the things about which I am passionate. These are the things that let me lose track of time and feel fully present and engaged. I most love to immerse myself in writing. Sometimes, just painting a vintage chair or wandering through a flea market is happiness.

Always, travel and nature’s beauty will feed my soul.

Average days are busy days.

Now that I have the time, I like to declutter a closet, or tackle long awaited home repairs. These simple accomplishments can be surprisingly satisfying.

Then there are the lost days, when I sink into the pitfalls of disorganization, ennui, distraction or procrastination. An inertia of non-productivity can take hold.

Responsibilities and deadlines morph

into tomorrows. Netflix binging becomes an indulgent pastime. Dust bunnies grow into tumbleweed and roll across my floors. Vegetables, purchased with the best intentions, sadly turn soft and limp, waiting for me to get into the cooking mood.

Paperwork, assignments and bills get pushed past their due dates.

It’s okay if I’m still figuring it out.

I’m doing this “retirement” thing in my own imperfectly perfect way.

Certainly, there are countless books, podcasts, TedTalks and articles by credentialed experts telling you how to design the perfect retirement. I don’t need to repeat their advice here. You know how to Google.

All I know is this: You must pay attention to the voice inside that calls you to that special “thing.” That “thing” you’ve always wanted to do. You know what it is. When you think about or engage in this “thing,” your pulse quickens. You feel a rush of excitement. It brings a sense of purpose, possibility, adventure, curiosity, or creativity. It’s an aliveness that sends you into the moment, centering you into your most authentic self.

Explore whatever that is for you!

Paint. Teach. Travel. Take a film class.

Play an instrument. Learn Chinese.

Become a cheese maker. Hike a mountain. Ride a horse. Rent an RV. Start by saying it out loud. Give it air. Let it breathe. Don’t ignore it.

Don’t park it on a bucket list. Don’t die with it. All the time in the world is guaranteed to run out one day. You only have today. Take time while you have it, to give wing to that “thing.”

Three Oaks hosts a Wurstfest to remember

he sun was shining, the band was playing and the grill was fired up for the sixth annual Three Oaks Wurstfest, which was held in downtown Three Oaks Saturday, Sept. 22.

Festivalgoers strolled down South Elm Street and shopped at the booths that lined the street, admiring the crafts, jewelry and fresh fruits and vegetables that were displayed at each booth. Vintage cars lined North Elm Street for a Classic Car Show.

In addition, guests could also browse the various shops located throughout the downtown.

In the children’s activities area, the younger festivalgoers could jump around in a bounce house or design a pumpkin.

Near the beer/wine tent, everyone was invited to dance in the street to the following band lineup: Vintage Postcard, Generation Gap, Johnny V. & Friends and Red Deluxe. MG Bailey also provided live entertainment during the car show in the morning.

This year, guests could sip at pours, brews and spirits from the following wineries, breweries and distilleries: The Round Barn Brewery, Saugatuck Brewing Company, Tapistry Brewing, Silver Harbor Brewing Company, Elk Brewing: Grand Rapids, Barn Brewers Brewery, Great Mead Hall & Brewing Company, Blake’s Hard Cider Co., Round Barn Winery, Distillery & Brewery, Lazy Ballerina Winery and Journeyman Distillery.

Food was provided by onsite vendors Wood, Stock and Grill and Drier’s Meat Market and downtown restaurants. Festivalgoers formed a long line by the tent in front of Drier’s to sink their teeth into the main course of the day: bratwurst.

embers of the public are invited to join Jonathan (Jon) Blum, former director of Medicare at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 14, at the Acorn Theater for an inside view of what potential changes to Medicare could mean for them.

Millions of voters will head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 6, and how they cast their ballot will have tremendous impact on today’s seniors and future retirees.

Changes to Medicare are being debated on Capitol Hill, and both sides of the aisle are advancing proposals that could improve or hurt the way members of the public receives health care.

Jon will be joined by local candidates running for office, including David Blum, candidate for County Commissioner of Michigan’s 9th District and Matt Longjohn, candidate of Michigan’s 6th congressional district. Dean Hill (who is running for state House 78th District), Joey Andrews (who is running for state House, 79th District) and Ian Haight (who is running for state Senate, 21st District) will also be present to answer questions about their campaigns.

Jon served as the director of the Medicare program from 2009-2014, under the Obama Administration in Washington DC. Jon directed unprecedented changes to the Medicare program that improved services to its more than 50 million beneficiaries, such as adding free preventive benefits and closing the so-called Medicare Part D “donut-hole.” He directed the implementation of new initiatives to lower the costs and improve the quality of care delivered to Medicare beneficiaries. These initiatives extended the solvency of the program to ensure it remained strong for future generations of beneficiaries.

He implemented reforms that forced Medicare Advantage and Part D plans to improve their services and become more accountable to the program and improve care for their enrollees. Finally, Jon presided over the program during a period of record recoveries of waste, fraud and abuse, which required pharmaceutical manufacturers and unscrupulous health care providers to pay back billions of dollars back to the federal treasury and ultimately its taxpayers.

CITY OF NEW BUFFALO BERRIEN COUNTY, MICHIGAN ORDINANCE NO. 231 OF 2018 AN ORDINANCE TO AMEND THE BOUNDARIES OF THE CITY OF NEW BUFFALO’S DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY’S DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT DISTRICT WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of New Buffalo adopted Ordinance 213 to established a Development District, Downtown Development Plan and Tax Increment Financing Plan for its Downtown Development Authority and on January 21, 2014 to correct and prevent deterioration in the downtown, and WHEREAS, The New Buffalo Downtown Development Authority voted to recommend to the City Commission at its February 8th that its boundaries be amended to reflect changes in the community since its original formation WHEREAS, pursuant to the requirements of Act 197 of the Public Acts of Michigan of 1975, as amended, the City of New Buffalo held a public hearing on the amendment of the District’s boundaries on March 20, 2017, at 6:30 p.m., at the New Buffalo City Hall. Notice of said public hearing was given by publication in the New Buffalo Times, by mailing to owners of property within the District and the affected taxing jurisdictions not less than 20 days prior to the date set for hearing; and by posting in at least 20 conspicuous and public places in the District not less than 20 days prior to the date set for hearing, all in accordance with the requirements of Section 16 of Act 197. At said public hearing, the City Commission provided an opportunity for interested persons to be heard regarding the amendment of the District’s boundaries and, in addition, the City Commission received and considered all communications submitted in writing with reference to the matter. A record of the public hearing, including all data presented at that time, has been made and is on file with the City Clerk.

Section 2. Amendment. Article XI, including Sections 2-81 and 2-82, of the New Buffalo City Code is amended to read as follows: ARTICLE XI. DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS Section 2-81. Section 2-82. Same – function; duties, authorities, and responsibilities of the officers.

The functions of the Department of Public Works is as follows: To provide for the operation and maintenance of City-owned or controlled parks, recreational facilities, and other facilities as assigned by the City Manager, to enable the public to enjoy recreational amenities and opportunities, while striving to enhance those facilities; and To provide for the maintenance of City street and alley rights-ofway, including, but not limited to, Complete Streets infrastructure (motorized and non-motorized transportation,) the stormwater management system, sanitary sewer collection system, urban forestry program, decorative street lighting program, Department of Public Works facilities, and City vehicles and equipment.

The duties, authorities and responsibilities of the officers of the Department of Public Works are commiserate with the function of said department.

The City Manager may prescribe such duties and responsibilities of the officers of the Department of Public Works, which are not inconsistent with the City Charter, these ordinances, or resolution adopted concerning such duties and authorities under the authority of the City Charter.

Section 3. Amendment. Section 7-2 of the New Buffalo City Code is hereby amended to read as follows: Section 7-2. Composition; appointments; filling vacancies.

Composition – The Harbor Commission shall consist of five (5) members, who shall be resident electors of the City. The following individuals are ineligible to serve as members: City Council members, the City Manager, the Department of Public Works Director, or any other elected official and/or employee of the City.

Appointments – Appointments made to the Harbor Commission shall provide for staggered terms of office.

Appointments to fill expired positions on such commission shall be for a period of three (3) years, and shall be made by the Mayor with the consent of the majority of the City Council at the regular organizational meeting of the City Council following the regular City election.

Alternate Members – The Mayor with the consent of the majority of

the City Council may appoint up to two (2) alternate members, who shall have the same membership requirements as regular Harbor Commission members. Alternate members have voice and vote on the Harbor Commission in the event a regular Harbor Commission member is absent. At the time of appointment as alternate members, the City Council shall designate one alternate to serve first in the event of an absence during a meeting, with the other alternate member serving if the first alternate member is unavailable, or in the event of a second absence during a meeting.

Filling Vacancies – Appointments to fill vacancies on the Harbor Commission shall be for a period of time equivalent to the unexpired term of that office. Appointments to fill such vacancies shall be made by the Mayor with the consent of the majority of the City Council, but shall be made within sixty (60) days of the date such vacancy occurs.

Section 6. Amendment. Section 1821 of the New Buffalo City Code is hereby amended to read as follows:

Existing Providers. Pursuant to Section 5(3) of the Act, within 180 days from November 1, 2002, the effective date of the Act, a telecommunications provider with facilities located in a public rightof-way in the City as of such date, that has not previously obtained authorization or a permit under Section 251 of the Michigan telecommunications act, 1991 PA 179, MCL 484.2251, shall submit to the City an application for a permit in accordance with the requirements of this ordinance. Pursuant to Section 5(3) of the Act, a telecommunications provider submitting an application under this subsection is not required to pay the $500.00 application fee required under subsection (d) above.

A provider under this subsection shall be given up to an additional 180 days to submit the permit application if allowed by the Authority, as provided in Section 5(4) of the Act.

Section 4. Amendment. Section 7-30 of the New Buffalo City Code is hereby amended to read as follows: Section 7-30. Exceptions.

Special permission for exceptions to these rules and regulations may be granted by the Department of Public Works Director except for the weight restrictions. Such permission must be written on the ticket for the watercraft in question and be initialed by the Department of Public Works Director or an authorized representative.

Section 5. Amendment. Section 189.00 of the New Buffalo City Code is hereby amended to read as follows: Section 18-9.00. Permit Required.

Any person desiring to construct a street, avenue, or other public thoroughfare across any platted but unopened right-of-way within the City shall first obtain a written permit therefore from the City Manager. Such a permit may only be granted if approved by the City Council after first receiving a recommendation from the Planning Commission. The construction of any street, avenue, or other public thoroughfare by any person across any platted but unopened right-of-way shall also meet with the requirements of Section 10, Structures to Have Access, of Title XI, Special Provisions, of Appendix A of this Code, that being the Zoning Ordinance of the City. Such permits, when granted, shall be forwarded to the Department of Public Works Director upon approval.

It shall be unlawful for any gasfitter, plumber, sewer digger, mason, or other person, except the Department of Public Works Director or Water Department Superintendent and employees of the City under the direction of the Department of Public Works Director or Water Department Superintendent, to dig any trench or make any other excavation in or under, or to remove any earth from any street, alley, sidewalk or public place in the City, or to contract for

Section 18-21. Permit Required.

Permit Required. Except as otherwise provided in the Act, a telecommunications provider using or seeking to use public rights-of-way in the City for its telecommunications facilities shall apply for and obtain a permit pursuant to this ordinance.

Application. Telecommunications providers shall apply for a permit on an application form approved by the MPSC in accordance with Section 6(1) of the Act. A telecommunications provider shall file one copy of the application with the City Clerk, one copy with the City Manager, and one copy with the City Attorney.

Upon receipt, the City Clerk shall make copies of the application and distribute a copy to the Department of Public Works Director, the Water Department Superintendent, and the Superintendent of the Galien River Sewer Authority. Applications shall be complete and include all information required by the Act, including without limitation a route map showing the location of the provider’s existing and proposed facilities in accordance with Section 6(5) of the Act. Confidential Information. If a telecommunications provider claims that any portion of the route maps submitted by it as part of its application contain trade secret, proprietary, or confidential information, which is exempt from the Freedom of Information Act, 1976 PA 442, MCL 15.231 to 15.246, pursuant to Section 6(5) of the Act, the telecommunications provider shall prominently so indicate on the face of each map.

Application Fee. Except as otherwise provided by the Act, the application shall be accompanied by a one-time non-refundable application fee in the amount of $500.00.

Additional Information. The City Manager may request an applicant to submit such additional information which the City Manager deems reasonably necessary or relevant.

The applicant shall comply with all such requests in compliance with reasonable deadlines for such additional information established by the City Manager. If the City and the applicant cannot agree on the requirement of additional information

Previously Issued Permits.

Pursuant to Section 5(1) of the Act, authorizations or permits previously issued by the City under Section 251 of the Michigan telecommunications act, 1991 PA 179, MCL 484.2251 and authorizations or permits issued by the City to telecommunications providers prior to the 1995 enactment of Section 251 of the Michigan telecommunications act but after 1985 shall satisfy the permit requirements of this ordinance.

Section 7. Amendment. Section 1918 of the New Buffalo City Code is hereby amended to read as follows: Section 19-18. Tampering with water system prohibited.

No person, except authorized employees of the Water Department, Fire Department, or Department of Public Works, and then only in the legitimate discharge of their duties, shall open or close any main valve or fire hydrant, or remove the cover for any valve or hydrant, nor shall any person interfere with or damage in any manner any building, machine, pipe, or fixture of the Water Department. The use of fire hydrants as a source of water supply, except by employees as above mentioned, is strictly prohibited, unless written permission is obtained from the Water Department, and this applies to all hydrants, municipally or privately owned, within or outside of the corporate limits of the City, supplied with water through the City mains.

Section 8. Amendment. Section 1918 of the New Buffalo City Code is hereby amended to read as follows: Section 19-19. Emergency Reduction of Water Use. The City Manager, or in his absence the Water Department Superintendent or the Department of Public Works Director hereafter collectively referred to as City Manager, is authorized to impose temporary restrictions upon the use of water from the city water system, in the manner provided in this section.

PUBLIC NOTICES Temporary restrictions may be implemented when one or more of the following conditions exist, and when the restrictions are necessary to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public, or to protect the water system from damage or failure: (1) T he user demand for water may exceed the sustained delivery capability of the system.

(2) T he system is operating at such high volume, or such low main pressures, that insufficient capacity or reserve remains to safely respond to an increase in demand created by a fire, water main failure, system malfunction, or other emergency.

(3) A ny other condition or situation, extant or reasonably anticipated, that may expose or threaten the system, its operating flows, residual pressures, or integrity to the point that the system is jeopardized or the public safety endangered.

Any temporary restrictions so implemented shall remain in effect until rescinded by the City Manager or until the next meeting of the City Council. The City Council may continue, amend, modify or suspend such restrictions by resolution at that time.

Temporary restrictions shall take effect when posted at City Hall.

The City Manager shall give prompt notice to local newspapers and radio stations of the temporary restrictions and the reasons for their implementation and shall take any other measures as he or she deems reasonable to notify the public. Notice of the termination of those temporary restrictions shall be given in the same manner.

The City may discontinue water service to any premises without prior notice in the event that such usage is in violation of any temporary restrictions.

Section 9. Publication and Effective Date. The City Clerk shall cause to be published a notice of adoption of this ordinance within 10 days of the date of its adoption. This ordinance shall take effect 20 days after its adoption, provided it has been published.

NEW BUFFALO TOWNSHIP INDIANA MICHIGAN POWER COMPANY ORDINANCE NO. 20180917 An Ordinance granting a revocable franchise to Indiana Michigan Power Company, its successors and assigns, for the right to acquire, construct, maintain, and operate in the streets, thoroughfares, alleys, bridges, and public places of the Township of New Buffalo, Berrien County, State of Michigan, and its successors, lines and appurtenant equipment for the transmission and distribution of electric energy to the Township of New Buffalo, and the inhabitants thereof, and for the transmission and distribution of the same within, through, or across said Township of New Buffalo, Berrien County, State of Michigan.

The Township of New Buffalo, Berrien County, State of Michigan, ordains: SECTION I Indiana Michigan Power Company, its successors and assigns (hereinafter called “Grantee”) is hereby granted the right, privilege, franchise, and authority to acquire, construct, maintain, and operate in, above, under, across, and along the streets, thoroughfares, alleys, bridges, and public places (as the same now exist or may hereafter be laid out) of the Township of New Buffalo, Berrien County, State of Michigan, lines for the transmission and distribution of electric energy, either by means of overhead or underground conductors, with all the necessary or desirable appurtenant equipment (the “Facilities”), to render public utility service in said Township and to the inhabitants thereof by supplying electric energy to said Township and the inhabitants thereof, and persons or corporations beyond the limits thereof for all purposes for which electric energy is now or may hereafter be used, and the transmission and distribution of the same within, through, or across said Township of New Buffalo, State of Michigan, subject to such reasonable regulation of the placement and operation of the Facilities as the Township Board shall prescribe from time to time and as is permitted under applicable state law.

SECTION II Said Facilities shall be constructed in a manner that shall not unreasonably interfere with the traveling public in its use of the streets, thoroughfares, alleys, bridges, and public places.

SECTION III The rights, privileges, and franchise hereby granted shall be in force and effect for a period of thirty (30) years from the date of the passage

The rights, privileges, and franchise hereby granted shall not be construed to be exclusive and the Board of the Township of New Buffalo hereby reserves the power to grant similar rights, privileges, and franchises to any other person or persons, firm or firms, corporation or corporations.

SECTION IV Said Grantee shall save the Township harmless from any and all liability arising in any way from Grantee’s negligence in the erection, maintenance, or operation of said Facilities, except to the extent arising out of the Township’s negligence or willful misconduct. If any demand is made or any action is commenced against the Township resulting from Grantee’s acts or omissions (or the actions of Grantee’s officers, agents, employees, contractors, successors, or assigns), in connection with the Electric System or the Grantee’s use of the Public Ways, Grantee shall, upon notice, defend and indemnify the Township and save it free and harmless from all loss, cost and damage arising out of such negligent construction and maintenance.

Except when arising out of or related to any negligent act or omission of the Township or its agents, employees, or contractors, the Township and its agents, employees, and contractors shall not be liable to the Grantee for any interference with or disruption in the operation of the Electric System, or the provision of service over or through the Electric System, or for any damages arising out of the Grantee’s use of the Public Ways.

SECTION V Whenever said Grantee shall begin the erection or installation of any lines or equipment, it shall promptly and diligently prosecute the work to completion and leave the streets, thoroughfares, alleys, bridges, and public places where such work is done in as good condition of repair as before such work was commenced.

SECTION VI The Township may require the Grantee to vacate or relocate any portion of the Electric System within the Public ways at the Grantee’s expense if such vacation or relocation is necessary to secure the public health and welfare or is otherwise required by the Township in the exercise of a governmental function. If Grantee’s electrical system components located within the public highways physically interfere with Township improvements made in furtherance of the rights of the public to the public highways under the jurisdiction of the Township, the Grantee shall relocate components of the electrical system to a mutually agreeable alternative location within the public highways at no charge to the Township,

provided however, that nothing in this provision shall be construed as a waiver by Grantee of any of its existing or future rights under state or federal law.

SECTION VII Wherever in this Ordinance, reference is made to the Township or the Grantee, it shall be deemed to include the respective successors or assigns of either; and all rights, privileges, franchises, and obligations herein contained by or on behalf of said Township, or by or on behalf of said Grantee, shall be binding upon, and inure to the benefit of the respective successors or assigns of said Township, or of said Grantee,· whether so expressed or not.

SECTION VIII This Ordinance shall be accepted by the Grantee within sixty (60) days from the date of the passage of same.

SECTION IX This franchise shall take effect after its adoption, acceptance and publication as required by law.

ibby Vera Kral, 90, of Lakeside, Michigan, formerly of Chicago, Illinois, died peacefully Sunday, September 23, 2018 in Pine Ridge Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Stevensville, Michigan.

Libby was born December 16, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, the older of two daughters born to Joseph and Lillian Rejcek. She married Edward Stanley Kral in 1950 in Chicago, Illinois.

Libby loved her flowers, birds, deer, and most of all her beloved dog, Cheyenne. She was the ultimate homemaker, cooking and cleaning. Libby never forgot anybody’s birthday, calling her daughters and singing “Happy Birthday” to them. Her husband and her kids were her life. Libby sang in the church choir. She was an avid bowler.

Libby will be greatly missed by family and friends. She is survived by two daughters, Stephanie (Marvin) Bowyer, Peggy (fiance’ Payge Jonas) Gearhart, both of Three Oaks; three grandchildren, Christopher (Adina) Gearhart of Buchanan, Jesse Gearhart of Three Oaks, Katie (fiance’ Nick Warner) Gearhart of Kalamazoo; and seven great grandchildren, Jonathon, Caitlin, Haley, David, Alissa, Noah, Maddison; She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister, Violet Rejcek.

Adam was born on May 8, 1983 in Oak Lawn, Illinois, to Jonas “John” & Ludwiga (Hur) Umbrasas. Adam attended Ferris State University where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration. While at Ferris, Adam became a dedicated Brother of Phi Sigma Kappa – Ferris State Chapter. Beginning as a volunteer in 2006, he became the Chapter Advisor in 2007 until he was elected to the Grand Council from 2013 until 2017. In 2017, Adam began his tenure with the Phi Sigma Kappa Foundation as a Trustee. Adam’s passion in life was for communities. He loved to help different towns and villages be the best they could be and work at their full potential. In 2007, he became the Village Manager for The Village of Kingsley until 2013 when he relocated to Three Oaks and served as the Village Manager there. Most recent, Adam was employed through Wade Trim Group as their Director of Community Engagement. Another love of his was boating; he loved to be on the water enjoying the outdoors or spending time at the New Buffalo Yacht Club where he was formally a Commodore. He also was an avid Chicago Cubs fan, watching their games whenever possible.

Adam was an incredible friend and brother to all; his wonderful and caring personality will truly be missed by everyone.

Adam is survived by his mother, Ludwiga of Three Oaks, Michigan; siblings, Monika (Michael) Vysoky of Crestwood, Illinois, Jonas (Yvonne) Umbrasas of Western Springs, Illinois, Major Karl Umbrasas of Washington D.C., Erik (Halley) Umbrasas of Union Pier, Michigan, and Eve “Queen Eve” Umbrasas of Three Oaks, Michigan; nieces and nephews, Cooper & Riley Vysoky and Violet & Scarlet Umbrasas; many aunts, uncles and cousins; and honorary brothers, Matt Purnell & Justin Qadri. Adam was preceded in death by his father, John.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 28, 2018 at 11:30 (EST) at St. Mary of the Lake Catholic Church, 718 W. Buffalo St., New Buffalo, Michigan. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family on Thursday, September 27, 2018 from 2 PM until 7 PM (EST) with a prayer service beginning at 7 PM, as well as on Friday from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM (EST) at Sommerfeld Chapel & Cremation Services, 15 N. Barton St., New Buffalo, Michigan. As many people knew, Adam was an incredible support system for his sister, Eve or “Queen Eve”.

Every year, he would send her to various camps whose focus was on helping people and families affected from down syndrome. he Rebecca Dewey Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, in Three Oaks, Michigan, met Saturday morning, September 8th, at the Three Oaks Township Library under the leadership of Regent Kathy Avery Alton.

What does the local chapter of DAR do? Our committees promote American History, Constitution Week, American Heritage, Native Americans, NSDAR Schools, Service to America by serving communities with volunteer hours, Commemorative Events past and present, and Community Service, Historic Preservation and Conservation Awards. We have also assisted the Blue Star Ladies with Veteran care packages through our Veteran Services Committee and much more.

The Rebecca Dewey Chapter is continuing the project for the restoration of Shedd Cemetery south of Three Oaks on Spring Creek Road. We are looking to install a lighted flagpole, a cemetery sign and pollinator garden by the end of 2019.
