ACADEMICS THAT INSPIRE What Newberry awakens in you academically, socially, civically, and spiritually is more than the time spent pursuing a degree; it’s a way of life. The inspiration for Newberry College comes from its founder, Reverend John Bachman, naturalist, scholar, and Lutheran church leader. Bachman believed education was an awakening of one’s academic, social, civic, and spiritual self for the good of all. Indeed, we still endeavor toward Bachman’s innovative vision today, offering a comprehensive academic experience that spans across eight divisions, numerous preprofessional programs, and an adult degree completion program. With a faculty that is truly distinguished, more than 75% hold the highest degree in their fields. Our students receive personalized attention and guidance that cultivate not just their intellect, but their overall being.

75%

More than any set of skills or proficiencies, more than any collaboration or internship, more than study abroad or hands-on experience, what makes a Newberry education unique is the convergence of them all. You’ll discover how skills interact with disciplines; how students, towns, cultures, industries, and countries are interdependent; and how, as a global citizen you can make a difference within them all - for life!

Business • The Department of Business, Behavioral and Social Sciences at Newberry College prepares students for management and entrepreneurial leadership through scholastic inquiry, internships, and critical analysis.

Forensic Science • Students graduate with the knowledge and skills needed to have successful careers and lives. Our graduates are currently employed in forensics/law enforcement, industrial and environmental labs. They are teaching in our high schools; others have been accepted into nationally renowned graduate and professional programs.

Music • The Department of Music provides our students with a comprehensive music foundation from which they are prepared to pursue a wide variety of careers in music. A number of our graduates have also been accepted into graduate music programs around the country. The result is that our music students become and remain passionate and lifelong advocates of music.

Nursing • Nursing majors at Newberry College have the advantage of small classes taught by experienced nurse educators who know their students by name, combined with comprehensive clinical

experiences at Lexington Medical Center and other area facilities. Our nursing graduates have been hired as RNs within a few weeks of obtaining their nursing licenses, and many are now in graduate school and/or doctoral programs at Duke, USC, and other prominent schools.

Teacher Education • At Newberry, professors truly care about their students’ success and well-being. In the teacher education program all students have faculty cell phone numbers so they can always be in touch. We strive to do whatever is necessary to prepare our students for success while demonstrating how to be an effective teacher.

Theatre • Three features make Newberry’s theatre program unique. First, we are a small department with many opportunities for students to perform and work technically in the classroom and in productions. Second, students can obtain funds to travel to professional conferences for auditions, workshops, networking and competitions. Third, our students perform in the downtown Newberry stateof-the-art Opera House in addition to our own Wiles Theatre on campus. Opportunity, travel and excellent facilities make our program unique, exciting and challenging.

Faculty Profile Dr. Wayne Kannaday ‘75

Professor of Religion, Department of Humanities Carter Professor of Humanities As a proud alumnus of Newberry College, I can attest to how effectively my professors, programs, and peers prepared me to pursue health and happiness in my personal life; to succeed— first in graduate school and later in my career; to lead with receptive ears as well as creative ideas; and to serve my church and community. Still today Newberry helps students, as I like to say, “make a life, make a living, and make a difference.”

LIFE AFTER GRADUATION Build your future on more than 150 years of success. Since 1856, Newberry College has been providing young people with the education and experiences they need to enter the world aware and prepared for its challenges. Career Services

At Newberry College Career Services is not just about

The Office of Career Services facilitates career development for all Newberry College students beginning with career exploration early in their freshman year. Through intentional conversations and career assessments, students begin focusing on their strengths, interests, and passions. We continue this approach throughout a student’s career at Newberry College as coursework and individual experiences lead a student down a path of self-exploration. As students move into their junior and senior years, we encourage them to participate in career development programs and employer events relevant to their chosen career.

finding an internship or job. Our focus is on the genuine development of the student in the context of their strengths and interests, while providing relevant training in career management. The journey is critical to ensure that the outcome aligns with a student’s ambitions and

In addition, we offer career and professional development training events that are designed to prepare students to articulate their skills and career goals and present themselves appropriately in social and professional situations. We use several online systems to facilitate interaction between employers and students. These systems allow employers to post internships and full-time positions directly to Newberry College students. Students can also upload relevant job search documents including resumes and cover letters, which are then searchable by employers interested in hiring from the College. Besides this career support, we schedule job fairs and employer activities throughout the year to help students obtain internships and full-time positions.

Rebecca Wicker worked in Malaysia with the Basel Christian Church of Malaysia (BCCM). Some of her responsibilities included helping with the Theodora Handicraft Center by selling fair trade crafts from the local Murut tribe. She also worked with the Tenom/Keningau Basel Children’s Choir teaching English to children and youth ages 6-22, and the youth of the local church congregation. After her experience abroad she moved to Philadelphia and now is a student at Lutheran Theological Seminary working on her M.Div. to become a pastor in the ELCA. “I feel that Newberry has prepared me to think critically about different situations and learn in many different ways. The Values Based Learning Program helped me to take what I learned and apply it to settings outside of the classroom. In seminary I’ve especially appreciated the way that I was prepared as a Religion and Philosophy major. My professors not only prepared me to be familiar with the material I would encounter in seminary, but they also prepared me for deeper critical and theological thinking.”
