Foreword: NewBees in 2022 Every year in our annual report, we discuss how things are going with NewBees, our colleagues and our participants. This year, we are proud to tell you how 2022 went and the impact NewBees made.
In addition to our services for newcomers and municipalities, 2022 was also an important year for employers in the Netherlands. We launched NewBees INC. for employers. Inclusive organizations where employees feel at home and safe are more productive, creative, and successful. Many employers have questions about how to go about implementing this process. That is why NewBees INC. advises and supports them in this. We know from experience

Impact in 2022 “At NewBees, we always want to keep learning how to make our solutions better. That is why we measure the impact we have on the participants, employers, government bodies, our own organization, and the rest of the world. This year we managed to optimize the impact measurement process to reflect on the modular structure of the building blocks we’ve put in place. This ensures we use the building blocks in such a way that we achieve a real long-lasting impact.” Annemiek Dresen

these components. Demonstrating the financial, social and societal impact our work has.
What is impact exactly? The impact that NewBees measures is about the ultimate impact NewBees has through the work that it does, and the impact it has on people. For example, the increased well-being or language development of the participants. We measure this in relation to all stakeholders involved: participants, companies where traineeships are set up, the NewBees organization itself, municipalities, and society at large.

RESOURCES NewBees can only achieve results if the right resources are available. For example: • Finances • Employees • Locations
WORK
IMPACT
By using these resources, NewBees can arrange how it works, our building blocks for example: intakes, workshops, neighborhoodsafaris, film education, personal guidance, etc. This all generates costs.
When measuring impact we go one step further and look at the change that impact makes for the various stakeholders. We do this in relation to a reference scenario. So, what effect has the NewBees traineeship had on participants versus non-participants?
RESULTS These initiatives directly affect the environment within, as well as the community around NewBees: result, for example: • The number of participants who contributed to one of the building blocks at NewBees. • But also the number of matches made to (volunteer) work.

Resources More cities, more colleagues In 2022, NewBees invested in the rollout of its services to 50 municipalities, which also meant that our teams had to be expanded. Building on the experience of the past few years, we’ve positioned ourselves to make even more impact in even more places, with even more people.

The NewBees Online Platform is smart, user-friendly and secure NewBees has developed an online platform that keeps track of the number of hours dedicated to participation, and how far someone is on the road to civic integration. This is important, because, as part of the Z route, people are obliged to participate for 800 hours and to follow 800 hours of language training. It is therefore important to properly register which hours of their day and week they spend on these components, because it has a direct impact on their integration.
GDPR-proof Login and access to the information differs per person and per position. Multiple authorization levels have been set. As a result, each user only has access to the information intended for them. In addition, various safeguards are used, so that the system is always GDPR-proof.
Tool to measure the impact The Online Platform also serves as a tool to measure the impact. For this purpose, the system uses quantitative data, such as participation

The MDT traineeship at NewBees helps Maher to use his time effectively, making the long wait more bearable Film education: leave them wanting more! “During the film education program offered by NewBees I get the opportunity to speak the Dutch language as well as learn about Dutch culture and society. All key topics for the film education are sent to me a few days in advance. I learn them well so that I can understand the films and participate in the conversation afterwards. It’s great, but always leaves you wanting more! Once a week is not enough. I also hope to find volunteer work to practice the language, to meet people, to participate in society, and to use my time effectively.”
Use talent in the Netherlands. Practical support from NewBees “I studied psychology in Syria. I worked as a basic counselor for the Syrian Red Cross. I would like to continue working in my field in the Netherlands. Wies arranged a network meeting with a professional from my field who informed me about a possible profession
Maher came to the Netherlands in June 2022 from Aleppo (Syria). Since 1 September 2022, he has been living in an emergency shelter, on a ship, in the port of Arnhem. There’s nothing to do on the ship. He is waiting for his residence permit. He is waiting for a house in Tiel and he is waiting for the right to work. He’s also waiting for his family, who he has not seen for almost two years. He is very happy with the MDT traineeship at NewBees, which provides him with educational, useful and fun participation work, together with other young newcomers once a week.
Maher: “I’ve been taking part in the MDT traineeship for two months now*. The program started with an intake interview in English with Wies (edit. matcher at NewBees). She gave me information about NewBees and I talked about my studies, my profession, my talents and work experience. I shared my concerns, wishes and ambitions. I liked the environment and the card game, it was very easy and accessible. We spoke almost like two old acquaintances, equal and with sincere and mutual interest.”
in the Netherlands. I want to understand how the system works here. Of course I also have to learn the Dutch language. A lot depends on the language. That is necessary to communicate with the municipality, to find work and ultimately to be able to do my job.”
* The MDT traineeship is part of the Social Service Programme, a program by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science to encourage young people to contribute to their neighborhood or community while discovering their talent. NewBees developed an MDT, especially for young newcomers. NewBees offers them a traineeship to further develop their talents, expand their network and get to know the Dutch employment market and culture. Participants take part in the participation building blocks via NewBees, this includes an intake interview, neighborhood safaris, film education, volunteering/internship and conducting network meetings.

NewBees Traineeships Participation Building Blocks Our courses - NewBees Traineeships - are tailored to the individual and consist of flexible, practical building blocks: learning and experience modules that are integrated with each other, the daily activities, and the environment for participants. Each newcomer gets an individually tailored curriculum, consisting of a combination of the building blocks. The building blocks are designed on the basis of our many years of experience with participation for and by newcomers.

Despite the fact that fewer participants completed a trajectory with us compared to 2021, the more intensive trajectories have led to an increase in the average positive impact per traineeship.
The negative impact on the government has decreased somewhat because the government’s contribution to NewBees’ activities in 2022 is slightly lower than in 2021. This is because the influx of participants was low in 2022.
The overall positive impact on businesses has decreased slightly. This can be explained by the fact that fewer participants than last year have been matched for long term and by the more intensive trajectories (on average a shorter period for a match within the traineeship). As a result, the overall negative impact (especially financial costs for companies) has decreased compared to last year.
The overall positive impact on the community has increased compared to 2021. This is because in 2022, more people reported living in a household with multiple people, which has increased the positive effect on the employment status of a family member.
The positive impact on NewBees as an organization has increased. This year, a correction has been made to the dates that represent the salaries of employees. New employees also joined the workforce.
The negative impact on society has also increased because the value of the employee’s working time is much higher than in 2021. This is because the data on the average annual salary of NewBees employees for 2022 has been corrected compared to 2021. This negative impact reflects the value that NewBees’ extracts from society because employees are not working elsewhere.
The positive impact on the government has increased because 1) more former participants are working more hours, and 2) more participants were put together with a partner, which had a positive effect for the government on the savings on benefits. The tight labor market and less stringent COVID measures have undoubtedly played a role in this.

That is why I am very happy with my activity as a volunteer at the village house in Rheden. NewBees arranged this match for me. I go there one afternoon a week. Scientific research supports NewBees approach and way of working Successful integration Scientific literature shows that education, social contacts, and mutual openness are fundamental components for ‘successful’ integration. It is also important to ‘not talk about the target group, but with the target group’. If the target group is closely involved in its own process, it improves the integration process. People then get what they need and value themselves.
Major similarities between science and the NewBees method There have been major similarities between some scientific literature listed as successful elements for civic integration, and NewBees’ approach. This includes low-threshold education, which also offers opportunities for newcomers to establish social contacts. Matching newcomers to (volunteer) workplaces, providing support along the way, through employers, for example, also shows that scientific research effectively contributes to successful integration. A society and a business in which inclusion, diversity and equality are central, reinforces the openness that a society has towards newcomers.
The Power of NewBees Lilian writes in her research ‘One of the strengths of NewBees is that the organization is built with insight
Lilian Ebbelaar graduates from Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam. From August 2022 to February 2023, she did an internship as a matcher at NewBees in Zaanstad and at the headquarters in Amsterdam. from different angles: the knowledge and strength of local people, older people and newcomers. Because of this diverse combination, there is a good basic knowledge of the city and the municipality in which newcomers have to integrate, a good network of local partners and a lot of knowledge about where good participation locations can be found’. There is also a good level of insight into what newcomers need to find their way, many of the NewBees employees themselves have a background as a newcomer. They serve as an example and role model.
Film education In response to the question of what they thought of the building block ‘film education’, the newcomers interviewed answered with words such as: ‘useful, informative, a lot of learning, fun, interesting, and important’. They rated the level of film education as ‘fine, as long as there is someone who can translate the contents’, which is almost always the case, because NewBees speaks so many different languages. The participants like to take part in the film education.

Neighborhood Safari The building block ‘neighborhood safari’ is also highly valued by the participants. They get to know new

What do the participants think of the NewBees building blocks?

Lilian interviewed several newcomers for her research: they were more than satisfied with the way they were supported by NewBees and the participation activities they carry out. Participation in the building blocks turns out to be important for their social engagement. It promotes the formation of meaningful connection with others.
Intake and guidance During the ‘intake and guidance’ building block, the matcher takes out time to get to know the participants. This is the first contact between the newcomers and the matcher who will guide them throughout the entire process. The intake interview is seen by both the participants and the matcher as an important moment to build a relationship of trust.

Impact made by NewBees on all stakeholders In 2022, the work done by NewBees has been of tremendous added value for all our stakeholders. The positive impact associated with our work outweighs the resources invested in our methods and people, many times over. This shows that NewBees’ approach works: working in practical way, based on talent and equality, leads to improved well-being and better integration. We are very proud of this!

flipchart or a presentation on a screen and began to tell their story. The interaction between the participants was minimal. At [the workshops given by NewBees INC. ed.] we were put in a circle. I could not imagine that a circle would have so much influence on people’s behavior. This setting gave us such a nice, familiar and safe feeling that everyone started talking. The coach was great. His energy, empathy, multilingual skills and great talent for communicating the message clearly, touched me enormously. I also saw immediate results.”
Give compliments “During one of the exercises we had to give a compliment to a colleague whose name we pulled from a card tray. This created a situation between two colleagues from the same team who had not spoken to each other for years. One of them took the name of the other. And everybody was quiet. He called the name, the other colleague stood up, walked up to him, shook hands with him. The colleague who had to give him a compliment said: ‘I want to thank you for the past beautiful year’. I get emotional and I still get goosebumps when I tell this. I have done so much and tried in vain to bring these two people together. Thanks to this workshop run by NewBees INC., in this circle, at that moment, I saw these two tough men walking towards each other and talking to each other again after all these years. Now they are friends. That’s exactly why I’m so happy with the NewBees INC workshops. Practical, concrete, personal, immediately applicable and with direct visible results on the work floor.”

Impact in 2023 and beyond NewBees is working towards an inclusive world and workplace, because we believe that diverse talent makes us all better. We have a systemic impact by influencing both sides of the market: we guide various employees and support inclusive employers. In the coming years, we want to see this impact increase significantly.

On our way to 100,000 satisfied people in an inclusive world 2022 was a transition year. It was the year in which we implemented our building blocks to ensure successful civic integration in an impactful way. It’s also the year NewBees INC. launched inclusive solutions for employers. An enormous amount of hard work has been put in to achieve that, which is why we are incredibly proud of all the wonderful people who make NewBees the inclusive, innovative, fun organization it is.
Solutions for employers NewBees INC. is going to grow and offers suitable and practical solutions for employers who want to fill a more inclusive workplace with practical tools. We are currently working with our partner, Critical Mass, who uses Virtual Reality experiences to engage in good conversations. In order to offer these experiences to employers on a larger scale, and with a focus on talented newcomers in the workplace, NewBees INC. will create its own VR material in 2023. From the

team put their heads together and expressed their commitment for the coming years. NewBees wants to make a systemic impact for an inclusive world and workplace. We don’t only want to impact the municipalities that purchase our complete package of building blocks, we also want to help smaller municipalities that have less resources at their disposal. There are still 298 municipalities that cannot offer NewBees building blocks to their inhabitants, and we think that is a shame. That is why we are working in 2023 on solutions that are accessible to all municipalities in the Netherlands, so that all newcomers throughout the country have the opportunity to integrate in an inclusive, practical, equal and fun way.

Meet the new board of NewBees
Supervise and monitor NewBees’ mission Theo: “I worked on the launch of NewBees INC., the new label under the NewBees banner, which develops Diversity & Inclusion programs for employers. In my work I come across many companies looking for their “why”. NewBees is one-and-all ‘purpose’. Everyone is so motivated and passionate, that touches me. During a conversation with the management, I indicated that I would like to remain involved with NewBees for a longer period. Companies need diverse talent and people need to be able to work safely. I would like to use my knowledge and expertise for this purpose.” Leon: “In 2015-16, when many Syrians arrived in the Netherlands in large numbers, I worked as a Senior Program Manager for the Dutch government. Back then, I instructed civil society organizations on how to get started and use the power of society to find solutions to the situation that The Hague was so illprepared to deal with. At that time I met Annemiek, who had just founded NewBees. We have kept in touch since. In my current position at Pharos, I am not directly involved in the integration of newcomers. That’s why I love the fact that I can play a role in that as a member of the board of NewBees. My parents taught me that

The board is a sounding board for the management, the critical ear. That’s the best part of our job.” Asma: “Annemiek’s first priority is the social goal NewBees has. With my expertise, I can support her in this. In addition, I am happy to help the organization with the changes that are taking place as a result of the growth. How do you make an impact with a larger social enterprise? And if the structure of the organization changes and the company develops a more systemic approach, how do you ensure that the group of people you work for, continues to reap the rewards?’
From growth phase to next level: How do you look at the future? Leon: “The new Civic Integration Act offers many opportunities for NewBees. In the short term, I hope that the housing issues for newcomers will be resolved by the various municipalities so that the existing NewBees teams can get to work on carrying out participation processes. NewBees does it for and with the people it stands for. In the longer term, I expect that more and more municipalities will realize that NewBees’ proposition, programs and working method deliver the best participation results. NewBees

looking for practical solutions for a safe and inclusive workplace. Lots of opportunities for growth.” Theo: “I expect that more municipalities will purchase services through NewBees and that the number of people involved NewBees participation activities will grow significantly. Our goal is to continue to deliver the quality we stand for. I also see interesting opportunities for further interaction between NewBees and NewBees INC. People who go through Participation and Civic Integration programs, or have done so previously, will start working at organizations where they need to feel at home and safe. NewBees INC. can play a role in this by guiding and advising employers.” Asma: “The organizational growth also brings an opportunity for NewBees to make a systemic impact by sharing knowledge and collaborating with various actors in the ecosystem. In addition, NewBees can use communication and storytelling as a tool to show what works and what doesn’t, to mobilize more people and create more awareness around the topic of migration and inclusion.”

NewBees and the SDG’s The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all member states of the United Nations in 2015, provides a blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and in the future. The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an urgent call for action by all countries - both developed and developing - in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other hardships must go hand in hand with strategies that improve health and education, reduce inequality and stimulate economic growth - all while addressing climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests.
