ocated alongside the Passaic River, Riverfront Park is a centerpiece of the city’s great park system with 15 acres of biking and walking trails, playgrounds and ballfields. During warmer months, the park features movie nights, concerts, exercise classes, festivals and boat tours on the Passaic River. Future plans include an outdoor amphitheater and a sculpture gallery. A 3.5-mile self-guided walking tour has over 80 points of interest, several of which feature interpretive panels that provide an overview of each site’s history. Popular stops include the 115-year-old Broad Street Station, the 1885 Ballantine House and the National State Bank building that’s now home to the Hotel Indigo Newark Downtown. he newest neighborhood art destination is in the city’s West Ward. The site, a PSEG electrical facility, includes a 30-foot art wall and outdoor public space. Designed by the architectural firm behind the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture, the art wall walkway has tall decorative pillars that are capped to provide shade for outdoor events and gatherings. o many food choices, so little time! When visiting the city make sure to dedicate part of the trip to sampling and savoring the culinary and cultural mélange that is Newark. It’s a city built by immigrants and each group has left a permanent and tasty legacy. Newark has long been known for its Ironbound area, where there are Portuguese, Spanish, Hispanic and Brazilian restaurants, bakeries and ice cream. Citywide there’s also a solid tradition of soul food as well as ltalian, Irish, German, African, Asian and Mediterranean cuisines. Edible Jersey, a publication that focuses on food from source to table, featured Newark in a recent issue, lauding it for “preserving a legacy while pursuing a renaissance.” Want a sure sign of the renaissance and the opportunities it brings? It’s when celebrity chefs put down stakes. Chef Marcus Samuelsson, of Red Rooster in Harlem and other restaurants around the world, was attracted to Newark’s cultural history. He opened Marcus B&P in late 2017 in the Hahne & Co. building on Broad Street. Marcus B&P sources produce from AeroFarms, the world’s largest indoor vertical farm, based in the Ironbound. A longstanding Newark favorite is Vonda’s Kitchen, led by Vonda McPherson. Her healthy take on soul and comfort food favorites has made it an important fixture in the city’s food scene. Fast food, casual, gourmet, bakeries and fine dining, Newark has it all. Start hungry and begin exploring this exciting food-centric city!

Beautiful Parks

Newark and Essex County are home to worldclass greenspaces. The oldest county park in America, Branch Brook Park, was designed by the internationally renowned Olmsted Brothers and is famous for its thousands of cherry blossom trees. Every April the park draws huge crowds from across the globe to its Annual Cherry Blossom Festival (Bloomfest). After a stroll through the park, take a spin on the indoor roller skating rink or test your skills on the tennis and bocce courts. At the city’s south end is the 300-acre Weequahic Park, also laid out by the Olmsteds, where you can play basketball, tennis, softball, baseball or jog through the tranquil setting. There’s even an 18-hole golf course! Cast your line to fish in these two parks and in six other locations.

Downtown Newark

is graced by historic greens, including Military Park, where you can participate in free outdoor yoga and tai chi classes during warmer months, study the massive Wars of America monument by Mount Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum and ride a carousel. The newest city greenspace, Riverfront Park along the Passaic River, offers ballfields, playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts as well as outdoor concerts and dancing in warm weather.

Also among Essex Countyâ€™s 22 parks are Brookdale Park in Bloomfield, famous for its gorgeous rose gardens, and Verona Park with its swan and paddle boats.

Glorious Gardens

Take time to visit the areaâ€™s beautiful gardens. Presby Iris Gardens in Upper Montclair are in bloom from late May until early June showcasing 100,000 flowers on six acres. Close by is the Van Vleck House and Gardens in Montclair, open 365 days a year. Greenwood Gardens, in Short Hills, features a formal Italianate garden, open spring through mid-November, with programs and events held year-round. Nearby is the Cora Hartshorn Arboretum and Bird Sanctuary with walking trails and programs for children.

Like to hike? Greater Newark boasts nature reserves that include South Mountain Reservation, a 2,000-acre wooded area laced with trails and vistas and even a waterfall. The adjacent Turtle Back Zoo is filled with exotic and familiar animals to delight children and parents. Eagle Rock Reservation includes the 40-mile Lenape Trail, which traverses Newark and its suburbs. Popular with families is the West Essex Trail, a three-mile biking-and-hiking path that follows the former rail bed of a defunct train line.

Learn about the Environment Looking for some educational and fun activities? The Greater Newark Conservancy, located in the city’s Central Ward and New Jersey’s only urban environmental center, offers self-guided tours through 10 garden galleries. There are year-round events and programs based on the season and weather including Second Saturdays Family Adventures, Family Fun in the Kitchen and Volunteer Days that are held at the conservancy’s main site on Prince Street or one of its two nearby urban farms. Explore Newark, one of the nation’s oldest cities, and you’ll find art at every turn. It’s easy to see why it was named one of the Top 10 Vibrant Arts Communities in the country. The Newark Museum is a national gem, which boasts major collections in the art of Africa, the Americas and the largest collection of Tibetan religious and secular art in the Western Hemisphere.
