The annual Newark Days celebration returns Thursday, September 17 through Sunday, September 20, 2026, with this year’s theme, “Adventure is Just a Page Away!”

Festivities will take place around the MacGregor Playfields and Newark Community Center, 35501 Cedar Blvd., bringing the community together for four days of carnival rides, delicious food, live entertainment, arts and crafts, family activities, and plenty of Newark pride.

Saturday is packed with some of Newark Days’ favorite traditions, including the Newark Mile 4K, Car and Truck Show, and the Newark Days Parade at 10:00 a.m. The celebration continues throughout the weekend, wrapping up Sunday with the annual Birthday Bash.

Newark Days has been a beloved community tradition for decades and is organized each year by the dedicated volunteers of Newark Days Celebration, Inc. Come celebrate Newark’s 71st birthday with your friends, family and neighbors! Check out the schedule of events and learn more at newarkdays.org.

Planning for the Future of Four Corners The City of Newark is beginning work on the Four Corners Specific Plan, a long-range planning effort for the area surrounding Newark Boulevard and Jarvis Avenue, between the Lake-Rosemont and Mirabeau neighborhoods.

The Specific Plan will create a vision for how the area could grow and change over time, building on the goals identified in the City’s 2023–2031 Housing Element.

Planning will explore opportunities for new housing, businesses and mixed-use development, neighborhood improvements, better connections for walking and biking, and access to public transportation.

The planning process will also consider future regional transportation improvements near the area, including the future Ardenwood Capitol Corridor station as part of the South Bay Connect Project and the future State Route 84 Intermodal Bus Facility.

Work on the Specific Plan is expected to kick off in late August 2026, and community input will be an important part of the process.

Residents, businesses and other community members will have multiple opportunities to share their ideas and help shape the future of the Four Corners area.

First-Time Homebuyer Program The City is excited to announce the start of the Downpayment Assistance Loan (DPAL) Program to support firsttime homebuyers in Newark.

City Council has approved $3 million for the program, which will provide low-interest loans of up to $150,000 or $200,000, tailored to buyer income and need.

The first-time homebuyer program is a core component of the Housing Element, Newark’s plan to meet the housing needs of all members of the community, at all income levels. As home prices have risen, so has the cost of a down payment. The program boosts a household’s buying power and ensures their mortgage payments are affordable. To be eligible for the program, your household should be first-time home buyers with a total income not to exceed 120 percent of the area median income for Alameda County, or $195,350 for a 4-person household.

Newark’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) has two opportunities this fall to help residents learn valuable emergency preparedness skills and get involved.

Meet CERT volunteers and emergency response personnel, explore emergency equipment and resources, and see demonstrations covering disaster preparedness, emergency communications, basic medical response and more. You’ll also learn about volunteer opportunities and the upcoming CERT Academy.

Take the Next Step: CERT Academy Ready to learn more?

The CERT Academy provides hands-on training to help participants safely assist themselves, their families, and their neighbors during an emergency before professional responders arrive.

Newark and Union City CERT partner to offer academies and other training opportunities.

While these training sessions are held in Union City, Newark participants who complete the academy will become members of the Newark CERT team.

Training covers disaster preparedness, fire safety,

light search and rescue, disaster medical operations, emergency communications, team organization, and other essential response skills. No previous emergency response experience is required.

Prepare Now for Wet Weather A little preparation can go a long way in preventing problems when heavy rain arrives.

Before wet weather begins, take a few simple steps around your home and neighborhood to help reduce the risk of localized flooding and stay prepared for storms.

Keep leaves and debris out of the street. Fallen leaves and yard debris can collect around storm drains and block the flow of water, contributing to street flooding. Rake leaves and place them, along with other accepted organic yard material, in your green organics bin so they can be composted instead of ending up in the street.

Prepare for areas prone to flooding. If you know your property or neighborhood is susceptible to flooding, plan ahead and have sandbags ready before a storm arrives. Selfserve sandbags are available at the City of Newark Maintenance Yard, 37440 Filbert Street.

Residents should plan to fill and load their own sandbags, and we recommend bringing two people

to make the process easier.

Be ready for power outages.

Keep flashlights, batteries, portable chargers and other essential supplies easily accessible. If you encounter a downed power line, always assume it is energized. Stay away, keep others clear of the area and report it immediately.

Never touch a downed line or anything in contact with it.

City Street Preparation. City crews prepare for significant weather by inspecting and cleaning storm drains, including jetting drains in advance when needed. Residents can help by keeping leaves, branches and other debris out of gutters and away from storm drains.

Taking care of routine yard maintenance and preparing before a storm helps keep our streets and neighborhoods safer when wet weather arrives. If you have any questions, contact maintenance@newarkca.gov.

Fremont Ford 39700 Balentine Drive Newark Through the City of Newark’s Vehicle & Accessory Theft Prevention Program (NVATPP), Fremont Ford will apply a Catalytic Converter Label Identification (CCLI) to your vehicle at no cost.

The unique identification can help deter theft and assist the Newark Police Department with identifying and recovering stolen catalytic converters.

The free service is made possible through grant funding from the Board of State and Community Corrections and is part of the City’s ongoing efforts to reduce vehicle and catalytic converter theft in Newark.

Your Guide to the November 3, 2026 Election Election Day is Tuesday, November 3, 2026.

Newark voters can vote by mail, return their ballot at an official drop box, or vote in person at any Vote Center in Alameda County.

All active registered voters in California will automatically receive a vote-by-mail ballot, with ballots beginning to arrive in early October.

What’s on the Ballot in Newark?

Another busy aquatics season is coming to a close, and most importantly, it was another season where everyone went home safe.

rescue, CPR, First Aid, and AED use. Staff also receive specialized waterpark training, and the City strives to have every lifeguard complete the 25+ hour Title 22 First Aid for Public Safety Personnel certification within their first year.

Training continues throughout the season with regular in-service sessions, emergency drills, skill evaluations, and professional development designed to keep lifesaving skills sharp and staff prepared for the unexpected.

Building a Stronger Team

More than 90% of Newark’s aquatics management team are certified Lifeguarding Instructors, completing additional instructorlevel training that allows them 8

to teach and certify others in lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid, and other lifesaving skills.

Having these instructors on our team strengthens the training we provide our own staff and creates opportunities to expand safety and certification courses for the Newark community.

A Season Worth Celebrating

Our aquatics team’s work extends beyond responding to emergencies. Lifeguards work every day to prevent incidents before they happen, while swim instructors help children and adults build confidence and develop lifelong water-safety skills.

We’re proud of our lifeguards, instructors, and aquatics staff for another successful season and for the preparation and professionalism they bring to Newark’s aquatic facilities every day. Their work may often happen behind the scenes, but it helps make every visit to the pool safer for our community.

Stay Safe in School Zones School zones are busy places, especially during morning dropoff and afternoon pick-up. As students return to school, the City of Newark and Newark Police Department are reminding everyone to slow down, stay alert, and do their part to keep students, families, and crossing guards safe.

As part of our ongoing efforts to promote safer roads, the Newark Police Department recently hosted a regional High Impact Traffic Team (H.I.T.T.) operation focused on traffic safety concerns throughout Newark. Officers concentrated enforcement efforts on speeding, stop sign violations, distracted driving, seatbelt violations, and other unsafe driving behaviors.

Operations like this are one way we’re working to encourage safer driving behaviors and prevent collisions. But keeping our roads and school zones safe takes all of us.

A little extra patience and attention can make a big difference. Whether you’re driving, walking, or biking, please do your part to help keep Newark’s roads and school zones safe for everyone.

Fall Registration Open for Preschool & Child Care Looking for child care this fall? The City of Newark’s Preschool & Licensed Child Care Program provides a safe, nurturing and engaging environment where children can learn, grow and build confidence as they prepare for kindergarten.

Offered Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., the full-time program encourages creativity, social development, and early learning through hands-on activities and a play-based curriculum.

Our experienced staff create a fun and supportive environment where every child can thrive.

Fall Sports Are Here! Know Before You Go The turf fields at Mel Nunes Sportsfield Park are available for public use during designated open-use hours when they are not reserved for permitted activities.

Before heading to the fields, be sure to check the publicuse schedule at newarkca.gov/ sportsfield Open-use hours are updated monthly and may change due to reservations, maintenance, special events, or other facility needs.

If a field is reserved, it is not available for general public use during that time. Please respect permitted groups and plan your visit around the posted schedule.

New Playgrounds Are on the Way! Exciting changes are coming to several Newark parks! Following community outreach to help shape the future of our playgrounds, the City is moving forward with the next phase of improvements at Birch Grove Park, Mirabeau Park, and Jerry Raber Ash Street Park.

Construction is expected to begin in late September or early October, with playground closures occurring in phases to minimize impacts across the parks. Birch Grove Park will close first, followed by Jerry Raber Ash Street Park and Mirabeau Park in mid- to late October, with some overlap between closures. During construction, the playground areas will be closed to the public while crews remove the existing equipment, prepare the sites, and install new play equipment, safety surfacing, and other improvements.

And there’s more to come!

Newark Community Park is scheduled for improvements as part of the second phase of park improvements. The park will become home to Newark’s first all-abilities playground, designed to create a more inclusive play experience for community members of all-abilities.

Birch Grove Park New playground equipment is scheduled for installation beginning in October, with work also including new tennis benches and other site improvements.

Mirabeau Park Improvements will include new play equipment for ages 2–5 and 5–12, new rubber surfacing, a climbing boulder, and additional site work.

Newark Resource Center Now Open The Newark Resource Center is officially open and connecting Newark residents with services and support available right here in our community.

Located at 37365 Ash Street, the Resource Center serves as a one-stop hub where residents can access a variety of social services from trusted community partners, as well as assistance from City staff.

Current service providers include: • California Migrant Education Program • ECHO Housing • Alameda County Healthy Schools & Communities • Compassion Network • Tiburcio Vasquez Health Center – WIC Program • Abode Services • Second Chance These organizations offer a range of services, including

housing assistance, health and wellness resources, educational support, family services, substance use treatment, and homelessness prevention.

Each provider offers services during designated days and times at the Resource Center.

Residents are encouraged to review the August–October Provider Schedule on our website, newarkca.gov/ humanservices, and schedule an appointment directly with the provider they wish to visit to ensure staff are available to assist them.

In addition to nonprofit services, City staff are available Monday through Thursday, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., to assist with Youth Scholarship applications and help connect individuals and families with City programs, services, and community resources.

Manufacturing Week Returns to Newark This October, Newark will celebrate Manufacturing Week for the fourth year, connecting local students with the businesses, careers and innovation happening right here in our community.

Held in conjunction with the nationally recognized Manufacturing Day, Manufacturing Week introduces students to the wide range of careers available in today’s manufacturing industry. Modern manufacturing goes far beyond the traditional factory floor, with opportunities in automation, engineering, information technology, biotechnology, operations, packaging, planning and more.

Newark is home to a growing and diverse manufacturing sector, making it an ideal place for students to see these careers firsthand. During Manufacturing Week, local businesses will connect with students at Newark Memorial High School and Mission Valley ROP, providing an inside look at their industries, career pathways and the skills needed to succeed.

Over the past several years, Newark businesses have helped make Manufacturing Week a success by sharing their expertise and giving students a look at the opportunities available close to home.

Help Shape Newark’s Future Community Cultural Arts Center The City of Newark is moving forward with planning for a new Community Cultural Arts Center, and we want to hear from you!

During development of the City’s Facilities Master Plan, nearly 600 community members shared what types of spaces and amenities they would like to see in a future facility. Arts and performance spaces, community gathering areas, and enrichment, dance, and fitness spaces emerged among the community’s priorities.

Now, as the City moves into the next stage of planning, we’re asking the community to help us take a closer look at how you envision using these spaces and what features are most important to you.

Thornton Avenue Overlay Project Moving Forward The City continues to move forward with plans to improve Thornton Avenue with new pavement and striping between I-880 and Olive Street between Ash Street and Spruce Street.

The approximately $7 million project is supported by a combination of federal and regional transportation funding, including $3 million in federal Community Project Funding secured with the support of Congressman Ro Khanna.

Due to federal funding requirements, the project design is required to go through a rigorous review and approval process with various permitting agencies. This review process has been on-going over the past year, and the City anticipates receiving authorization to advertise the first phase of the project (I-880 to Olive Street) for construction bids soon.

The Thornton Avenue improvements represent a significant investment in one of Newark’s major roadways and will provide a smoother, safer roadway for residents, businesses, and visitors. The City appreciates the community’s patience as we work through the required funding and approval processes and move this important project toward construction.

Enjoy an evening of holiday fun at the Newark Civic Center Plaza featuring crafts, performances by local groups, hot cocoa and cookies, games, a free photo booth, letters to Santa and more.

Then gather around as we light the tree and celebrate the start of the season together.

Fall Community Clean Up Event Got bulky items you need to get rid of? Newark residents are invited to participate in the City’s Fall Community Clean Up. Residents can drop off a variety of unwanted items, including appliances, bulky trash, e-waste, furniture, mattresses, metals, untreated wood, tires and reusable household goods.

Appointments are required.

To reserve a time, email environmental.services@newarkca. gov with your full name and preferred appointment time.

This event is open to Newark residents only. At check-in, please bring a utility bill showing a Newark address and a matching California ID or driver’s license with a Newark address.

Accepted: Appliances, bulky trash, e-waste, furniture, mattresses, metals, untreated wood, tires and reusable household goods.

Not Accepted: Hazardous waste such as batteries, paint, motor oil, chemicals and lightbulbs; construction debris such as rock, concrete, drywall and painted wood; fuel containers such as propane tanks and gas cylinders; appliances or equipment with gas tanks; and household trash.

Please note: The event may end earlier if collection bins are full.
