Dear Reader, As you embark on a journey into the past 125 years of The Nevada Sagebrush, you will read some of the best work our organization has to offer. We used this anniversary to highlight the unique qualities of independent student journalism, which is now threatened across the country. “The Nevada Sagebrush” is historical and award-winning, but this has not come without its challenges. However, we were created through adversity, and didn’t expect anything less. Our founders, who named us “The Student Record”, envisioned an independent paper, free to criticize fairly. This would lead us to be called “feisty”, “defiant”, “entertaining” and “colorful”—our reputation precedes us. From the very first to the most current issue, we continue that mission 125 years later. It has been our honor to provide quality news coverage of the university for more than a century, and here’s to 125 more years and beyond.

An independent voice for students for 125 years

By Guy Clifton Editor-in-Chief l985-86 In the early fall of 1893, a group of University students asked the administration for permission to start a student publication, a request that was quickly denied.

So they did it anyway.

The students – led by Charles Magill, a mining major and minister’s son, and Fred Frey, a mining engineering major – held a secret meeting on the top floor of the mining building and voted unanimously to start an independent periodical, which they named The Student Record.

The first issue was put together in the basement of the new Congregational Church, located just south of campus on the southwest corner of Fifth and Virginia streets, just before editor Magill’s father, the Rev. Thomas Magill, began Sunday school class. It appeared on campus Oct. 19, 1893 and the publication now known as The Nevada Sagebrush was born.

“The Record will be independent in politics and reserves the right to criticize all parties and measures,” appeared in the first edition. What didn’t appear was the name of any staff members.

It wasn’t until the third edition in November of 1893, once the university hierarchy accepted the publication, when a staff list appeared.

In the 125 years since that first issue, the Sagebrush has remained an independent voice

for Nevada students; produced an impressive list of high-achieving alumni including a Nevada governor (Emmett Boyle) and U.S. Senator (Alan Bible), a director of the United States Mint (Eva Adams), a state Supreme Court Justice and Lt. Governor (Myron Leavitt), a Reno mayor (Francis Smith), four Rhodes scholars, six Pulitzer Prize winners and no less than 17 inductees into the Nevada Newspaper Hall of Fame.

Six Nevada schools – four in Las Vegas (Ruthe Deskin Elementary, Harvey Dondero Elementary, Myron Leavitt Middle School and Sig Rogich Middle School) and two in Reno (Rollan Melton Elementary and Earl Wooster High School) – are named for former Sagebrush staffers.

One of those Rhodes scholars, Stanley M. Wilton, led the effort in 1910 to change the name of The Student Record to the Sagebrush, as he and several fellow staff members felt it better described the spirit of the campus and Nevada’s “free and open life and the vigor and strength of the hills.”

As Robert Farrar, the Sagebrush editor in 1912-13 and 1913-14. later explained, “Any college or prep-school can have a ‘Student Record,’ but only Nevada can have a Sagebrush.”

Like any good newspaper, it has endured its share of bumps, bruises and challenges through two world wars, depression, recession and more than a few controversies.

In 1902, George Springmeyer

became the first, but not the last, student editor to be removed from his position. That year, Reno had a smallpox scare and university president J.E. Stubbs imposed a semi-quarantine, requiring students who lived on campus to stay on campus, while allowing students who lived off campus to come and go.

Springmeyer, who was living in Lincoln Hall, led a rebellion of dorm students who marched downtown in defiance of the order. In The Student Record, he lambasted Stubbs for his handling of the scare. Springmeyer was expelled, later reinstated though required to complete his courses at Stanford before being allowed to graduate with his Nevada classmates.

Springmeyer would go on to law school and be appointed the U.S. Attorney for Nevada before a long career as a lawyer.

He became law partners with another former Sagebrush staffer, Bruce Thompson, who became a federal judge and is the namesake of the federal courthouse in Reno.

Thompson’s appointment to federal judge by President John F. Kennedy, came after the death of a fellow Sagebrush alum John R. Ross (Sagebrush editor in 192223), who had been appointed to the bench by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1954.

Another editor who was forced from office early was Donald O’Donnel in 1961, fired by the student senate for what it termed “Incompetence,” after O’Donnel

had written several scathing editorials critical of the administration. The remaining Sagebrush staff retaliated, putting out an edition that was completely blank with the exception of the Sagebrush flag on the cover and the paid advertisements inside.

Despite controversies, the Sagebrush has largely maintained its independence through the years and its roster of high-achieving alumni encompass journalism, medicine, literature, law, education, the military and more.

One of the most prominent in the field of journalism was Frank McCulloch, a Fernley ranch kid who served as Sagebrush editor in 1940-41. McCulloch went on to storied career in news, including serving as the Time-Life bureau chief in Vietnam and Washington, D.C., and holding newsroom executive positions with the Los Angeles Times, Sacramento Bee, San Francisco Examiner and McClatchy Newspapers.

Of the six Pulitzer Prize winners who graduated from Nevada’s journalism school – Ed Montgomery, Howard Sheerin, Warren Lerude, Susie Forrest, Ron Einstoss and Kristen Go – all had bylines appear in the Sagebrush and five of them were members of the Sagebrush staff.

Virtually every newspaper in Nevada, at one time or another, had Sagebrush staffers transition into their staffs, none more so than the hometown Reno newspaper – originally the Nevada State Journal and Reno Evening

Gazette, which merged in 1977 into the Reno Gazette-Journal.

Joseph McDonald, Joe Jackson, Frank Sullivan, Ty Cobb, Rollan Melton, Einstoss, Lerude, Bruce Bledsoe, Steve Falcone were among the many Sagebrushers who went to work for the local paper.

Current Reno Gazette Journal staffers Brian Duggan, Michael Higdon, Duke Ritenhouse and Jim Krakewski were all Sagebrush staff members in their college days.

Many a past Sagebrush alum went into advertising or public relations, including some legendary names from Reno’s “Mad Men” era, including Thomas C. Wilson, Mark Curtis, Gene McKenna and Gene Evans. Abbi Whitaker, who runs the Abbi Agency in Reno, was on the Sagebrush staff in 2001, and Annie Flanzraich, owner of Flanz Writes agency, was Sagebrush editor in 2005-06 and 2006-07.

Former Sagebrush editors Jim Joyce and Sig Rogich opened powerful advertising and government relations firms in Las Vegas and Rogich was on the campaign teams of Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

Among former Sagebrush staffers who went into education as a career field were Harvey Dondero, editor in 1930-31 and the namesake of Harvey Dondero Elementary School in Las Vegas; and Earl Wooster, Sagebrush staffer in 1919, is the namesake of Wooster High School in Reno.

At least one Sagebrush staffer went into the medical profession.

Fred Anderson, the Sagebrush editor in 1927-28, was a Rhodes Scholar, went on to medical school and had a long career as a physician in Reno. He was also a longtime member of the Nevada System of Higher Education Board of Regents and was the driving force behind the establishment of the medical school on the Reno campus.

During World War I, many of the men on campus were drafted into service, including those serving on the Sagebrush staff. The 1918 editions were largely put out by associate editors Elsie Farrar and Agnes Constable.

The situation was largely the same during World War II. Melba Whitaker and Betty Molignoni were co-editors in 1943-44, with Molignoni serving as editor through the 1944-45 school year.

She was followed by Madeline Maestretti, who served as editor in 1945-46.

The Sagebrush has changed with the times during its 125-year history, but though all the years, it has never swayed far from the mission its founders set out in 1893 – to be an independent voice for the students of the University of Nevada.

Here’s to the next 125.

Frank McCulloch: Editor-in-Chief, 1940-41

By Warren Lerude Editor-in-Chief l959-60 Frank McCulloch, Nevada’s most celebrated editor through the decades, was named a Distinguished Nevadan by the Board of Regents posthumously at commencement May 18, 2018, four days after he died at age 98 following a brief illness in Santa Rosa, CA. Regent Jason Geddes commented to a gathering of 10,000 students, faculty, staff, friends and families: “In memory of Frank McCulloch: Your life as the most accomplished and distinguished journalism graduate in University history has provided the best possible example of how to be an ethical, honest and successful journalist. Your influence on American journalism over the past half-century has been immense. You have played an instrumental role, on the largest and most compelling stages in American journalism, in continuing the fight for First Amendment freedoms for journalists. In honor of your significant contributions to Nevada, and to the social, economic and educational advancement of its people, we are proud to recognize you as a Distinguished Nevadan.”

Dean Al Stavitsky of the Reynolds School of Journalism presented the award to McCulloch’s family at a memorial service in June at Santa Rosa.

The Nevada Sagebrush Alumni Chapter has created the Frank Mc Culloch Lifetime Achievement Award in his honor to be presented at its annual dinner to former Sagebrush editors or staffers who have distinguished themselves in their careers. And the Reynolds School of Journalism has created the Frank McCulloch Courage in Journalism Award to annually honor the work of journalists of distinction.

Frank’s daughters Candy Akers and DeeDee Parman asked me as a life-long friend and colleague to write his obituary. It was reprinted in many newspapers and placed as a memorial in media organizations archives.

Frank McCulloch, the son of a pioneer Nevada ranch family who served as a combat war correspondent and led major American news organizations distinguishing himself as an icon for a free press, died Monday night, May 14, 2018. He was 98.

His family was close by at a Santa Rosa, CA. nursing facility where he had been treated for a brief illness.

McCulloch served as a reporter, editor and bureau chief for Time-Life News Service bureaus ranging from New York and Washington, D.C. to Dallas and Los Angeles. He served as Southeast Asia bureau chief in Hong Kong and Saigon covering the Vietnam war and in top editor positions at the Los Angeles Times, the national McClatchy newspaper company based at the Sacramento Bee and the San Francisco Examiner.

Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism in New York presented McCulloch its highest award in l984 “for singular journalistic performance in the public interest” and “overarching accomplishment and distinguished service to journalism”.

McCulloch both championed and questioned his profession, saying at a retirement dinner in Los Angeles in l964: “We admit the free press is not what it should be, and probably never will be. But the inescapable truth is, it’s all we’ve got. For better or worse, so long as this remains an open society, you and we—a free people and a free press—are stuck with each other. Shouldn’t it behoove both of us to try to understand each other better?”

Pulitzer Prize-winning war correspondent and author David Halberstam, commended McCulloch as he received the Center for Investigative Reporting’s prestigious 2009 Founders Muckraker Award in San Francisco: “I speak for a great many others in different venues where Frank worked, and was admired, and always made a difference. Some of us had a sense of his iconic status for a long time, going back as far as l967” when McCulloch covered the Vietnam war as “a marvelous reporter”.

President Johnson was enraged

by McCulloch’s Vietnam reporting in l966 that he planned to build up American forces to 545,000.

Halberstam recalled a senior reporter in Washington raised the topic with President Johnson “who famously answered that Time’s bald-headed Saigon

bureau chief had been wandering around in the sun without a hat and was addled. Well, they loved that in the upper levels of the Time hierarchy. The fact that the president knew that Time’s man was bald.”

McCulloch’s own colleagues in the Time-Life Washington bureau were critical but by 1968 the forces had grown to that number.

“I wasn’t any genius,” McCulloch said in an interview published in the University of Nevada Silver & Blue alumni magazine years later (l992), “I just had the sources.”

One disagreeable source, Indonesian ruler Sukarno, confronted McCulloch because of his reporting in Time. McCulloch recalled their intense, face to face standoff. “He was threatening to throw me out of the country, and I told him I didn’t think that would be a very good idea for either of us.”

Sukarno backed down.

McCulloch was credited at the San Francisco program for inspiring a generation of reporters including Halberstam, Karsten Prager of Time Magazine, Lowell Bergman of The New York Times and PBS Frontline and scores of others.

Young reporters saw McCulloch as a visionary. He predicted the death of once robust Life, Look and the Saturday Evening Post national magazines which he prophesized being forced to give way to television’s dramatically moving photo journalism, increased depth reporting in major newspapers and a proliferation of specialized topical magazines.

He encouraged one young Associated Press reporter to join his staff as a business writer at the Los Angeles Times in l962 with a promise of spirited competition to beat back the invasion of The New York Times in a newly planned West Coast edition. He confided to the reporter ahead of any official announcement of the creation of The Washington Post/Los Angeles Times news service to compete with the well established new service of The New York Times.

McCulloch wrote many Time Magazine cover stories, including a l955 piece on Justice Thurgood Marshall of the U.S. Supreme Court, when the cover stories had a unique status in national journalism. He covered a range of presidents from Truman to Johnson, Nixon and Ford as well as Generals Curtis LeMay and William C. Westmoreland and writers John Steinbeck and Ernest Hemingway.

McCulloch was the last reporter to interview billionaire Howard Hughes when, in l958, the Hollywood and aviation celebrity took him on a flight over Southern California and Arizona in a prototype of the 707 to predict a new era of jet plane passenger traffic.

McCulloch made news himself in l972 when author Clifford Irving claimed to have interviewed the by then reclusive Hughes for a book and Life Magazine serialized the story as authentic.

Hughes called McCulloch, then working in Time-Life New York headquarters, to reveal it as a hoax, and McCulloch stopped the Life presses in Chicago to kill the

magazine’s serialization, upsetting his bosses at Time-Life.

“I did it on my own,” he said with a chuckle in the Silver & Blue story. “It didn’t sit too well with my superiors. But it would have been a lot worse if the edition had continued to run.”

The dramatic turn of events eventually was made into a movie, The Hoax, starring actor Richard Gere.

Another actor played the bald-headed McCulloch character.

McCulloch was born in Fernley, Nevada, about thirty miles east of Reno, January 26, l920 to ranchers Frank and Freida McCulloch and educated in rural classrooms and at Reno High School. He worked at his school paper but really broke into journalism as the editor in charge of the University of Nevada student newspaper Sagebrush in Reno, graduating with Phi Beta Kappa honors in l941.

While in college, McCulloch met Jakie Caldwell, the daughter of a nearby town veterinarian who inspected McCulloch’s father’s cattle for the state of Nevada. A student away in a college in Oregon, she was visiting her parents in their home in Yerington. “It was love at first sight,” a family member said. McCulloch courted her on horseback rides and soon proposed. They were married after graduating from college on March 1, 1942 at the home of her parents, George and Faye Caldwell.

McCulloch often paid tribute to his alma mater, joking with friends: “If it weren’t for that journalism school, I‘d still be bucking bales of hay on the ranch

in Nevada.”

The university presented him an honorary doctorate when he returned to the campus as commencement speaker on l967 and named him a Distinguished Nevadan in 2018.

He was further honored by his alma mater when the Reynolds School of Journalism created the endowed Frank McCulloch Courage in Journalism Award given annually to journalists of national achievement and the student newspaper designated the Frank McCulloch Lifetime Achievement Award for distinguished alumni. He was selected twice as the Distinguished Scripps Lecturer that honored fellow Nevada journalism graduate Ted Scripps of the Scripps Howard news organization.

After graduation, McCulloch worked for United Press in San Francisco as a reporter, then served in the U.S. Marine Corps from l942 to l945.

He served as a reporter covering crime, sports and politics for the Reno Evening Gazette from l946 to l953, then joined Time-Life News Service where he began his long news magazine career. He was a founder of Learning Magazine in l972.

McCulloch, recipient of the Society of Professional Journalists Freedom of Information Award in l983, reflected on his career in a 2012 Nevada alumni magazine story, saying he was proud of “starting, maintaining and establishing investigative reporting at the Los Angeles Times, The Sacramento Bee

A different path to payday:

Sperm banks and egg clinics target college students Pacemaker, 2008

Like many university students, Sarah wanted to study abroad, but money was an issue. That was until the cash-strapped 22year old University of Nevada, Reno student decided to sell her eggs.

“Somebody wants a baby. I want to go to France,” Sarah said. “It sounds like a good trade to me.” Sarah still hasn’t told her parents about her decision to sell her eggs, which is why she didn’t want to use her last name for this story.

Sarah is one f the thousand college students who turned to selling bodily fluids, like sperm and plasma, to fund their education.

In 2005, clinics performed over 16,000 egg retrievals from college-aged women, said eleanor Nicoll, a spokeswoman for the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM).

Compensation for donors varies, but ASRM recommends no donor receive more than $5,000. “It’s so women are not blinded by the cash,” Nicoll said.

Despite ASMR recommendation, some internet companies offer as much as $10,000

for 20 eggs. The Nevada Center for Reproductive Medicine offers $3,000 in return for 20 eggs, Shannon McGrath, a nurse practitioner at the clinic said.

She said eight years ago, the price was $2,500, but it was raised about two years ago to compensate for rising tuition and inflation. “We understand many of our donors are college students,” McGrath said.

As recently as 2006, The Nevada Sagebrush printed a classified ad from Heart Felt Egg Donation, offering a $2,000 check for collegeaged women willing to donate their eggs.

Despite friendly ads, the procedure doesn’t come without its troubles. It’s long, painful, and often women who want to donate their eggs for money are turned away for not meeting standards.

Women who want to donate are asked to provide head shots, medical history, personality traits and SAT scores. Donating eggs has little physical health risk, Marshall said.

Inflammatory Pelvic Disease is the greatest health risk involved, but less than one percent of donors get it.

Despite the low physical risks, mental problems are more likely, Marshall said.

Marshall said the mental problems stem

from young people making a huge decision and not weighing the consequences.

Sarah said potentially having a child does not set easy with her. “I don’t want a knock on my door 18 years from now,” Sarah said.

That knock will not happen as long as a Nevada law stating all donors remain anonymous remains the same. McGrath said she warns donors not to view the law as a way out potential parental responsibilities.

“There’s always potential laws can change,” McGrath said. California law releases [donors] from parental responsibilities, Brown said.

Regardless, the potential $5,000 check she will receive from Giving Hope, a corporation she found using Craigslist, is enough to make Sarah go through with the process.

“College students are heavily recruited to to donate eggs and sperm,” Nicoll said. “They are young, generally healthy, don’t plan on having children soon, and the compensation appeals to them.”

Scoot Brown, communications manager for the California-based sperm bank Cryobank, said most of the banks “recruiting” takes place on college campuses. He said sperm “recruiters” will visit campuses and

Free parking for athletics, others pay extra Pacemaker, 2012

A new policy this year that excuses the athletics department from paying for fan parking during games contributed to a 25 percent increase in the price of all parking permits for students, according to university officials.

The move, which University of Nevada, Reno President Marc Johnson said can be contributed to budgetary constraints in the face of a massive state deficit last year, exacerbated problems such as long walks and expensive pricing that students and faculty had already noted with campus parking.

When the measure came before the University Parking Board in April, its members asked administrators to reconsider it because of the effect it could have for students already facing rising tuition costs in a down economy, said Jodi Herzik, a representative on the board last year.

But administrators ultimately decided to continue with the plan.

“It just hurt,” she said. “It hurt as an employee, and we knew it would hurt students with their fees increased and… [it would hurt] staff as well.”

Sarah Foster, a 23-year-old secondary education major, said the cost of parking was already too much for her. Instead, she turned to streets adjacent to the campus.

“I’ve never paid for parking at UNR because I always thought the prices were outrageous,” Foster said. “More so now.”

Other students supported the decision because of the necessity to meet funding constraints.

Travis Holland, an 18-year-old business major, took on the price of a permit this year.

“I’m OK with it because I think the school needs to bring in people to support athletics,” Holland said.

Athletics originally paid the selfsupporting Parking and Transportation Services department for fan parking on spaces on game days, but when administrators cuts

$1 million out of their biannual budget, they excused them from paying for those extra spaces, Johnson said. The resulting loss of revenue for Parking and Transportation added $170,000 onto a projected $200,000 deficit from lagging permit sales, Director of UNR’s media relations department Jane Tors said.

Despite the jump in pricing, UNR’s parking department still projects a deficit of about $190,000, Tors said. Administration in the department plan to fill the hole through operational efficiencies, she said.

The increase, the first in three years at UNR, is in line with parking fee hikes that have traditionally been raised every few years, Director of Parking and Transportation Services Melody Bayfield said. But the new policy didn’t help with the deficit that necessitated this year’s prices, she said.

The changes have especially impacted students involved in medical fields, said Mike Maskaly, a development technician in the University of Nevada School of Medicine. With new buildings such as the Center for Molecular Medicine and the William Pennington Health Sciences Building opening on the north end of campus in the past two years, the demand for parking has increased.

Bayfield said her department shifted parking it has erased with the opening of the south campus Davidson Mathematics and Science Center to the areas around the new building.

But the new spaces require users to display a silver permit — the most expensive tag parking services offers.

“Student [hardship] is easy to see,” Maskaly said in an email.

“But what about the nurses, medical assistants and staff who have seen their pay cut 12 [percent], no raises and are expected to use their personal vehicles for tissue collection, lab supplies, nursing and technical support at offcampus locations?”

To avoid paying for silver parking spots, many of the students, faculty and staff who use the

medical buildings have instead purchased blue and green passes, he said. But those with blue passes end up in an area that leaves them walking across space that’s not always well-lit at night and offers no stops along the campus shuttle route, Maskaly said.

Many end up walking up and down a steep dirt path to get to their buildings faster.

Budget constraints blocked an opportunity to improve parking for north campus again when several faculty expressed interest in developing a patch of dirt into new spaces, said John Walsh, associate vice president of Facilities Services. The lot, which currently hosts construction workers that are building a new residence hall, couldn’t be developed because of the university’s state-forced budget cuts, he said.

But the sacrifices necessary in a university community where monetary decline affects everybody, according to David Ake, director of the School of Arts.

“Look, no one likes to see their costs go up,” Ake said in an email.

“It’s a simple fact of life, though, that these things happen sometimes. And we have to recognize, too, that occasionally folks...other than ourselves, will — and should — receive additional help.

Parking workers at three schools Nevada has faced in athletic events in the past year — the University of Oregon, University of Idaho and University of Nevada, Las Vegas — said their athletics departments pay for their spaces on game days.

UNLV’s athletics department includes parking fees in the price of their tickets, according to the school’s Director of Parking and Transportation Services, Tad McDowell.

At the University of Idaho, the athletics department bundles parking fees into season ticket sales and donor programs, said Carl Root, Director of Parking and Transportation Services at the institution.

Johnson said the parking waiver is temporary. Whether it continues in the budget biennium will depend on the department’s fiscal ability in the future.

“Some people look at it as an easy way to make money,” Brown said.Brown said Cryobank averages 100 new donors per year, who generally donate two times a week, one less than the weekly limit.

Brown said each sperm bank has their own policies on informing donors whether they have a child. Brown said Cryobank will inform donors if their sperm was chosen 18 years after the child is born. The decision to contact the child is up to the donor.

McGrath said there are no sperm banks in Reno and the majority are in California.

Sperm donors are compensated $75 for each donation, Brown said. Egg donors, on the other hand, can make much more.

The reason for the disparity is a matter of supply and demand, Marshall said. She said women are born with about 2 million eggs, most of which will die by the time they are in their 40s. Men can produce sperm until the day they die.

Brown said women get compensated more than men because the process of donating is more painful and time-consuming. Aside

from the reproductive cells, students have been known to sell other fluids for cash.

Plasma, serum and white and red blood cells can be sold at certain donor centers.

David Lupan, a senior associate dean for research at UNR’s school of medicine, said plasma — the liquid that allows blood to clot — is the most commonly sold blood fluid.

Biomat, a plasma donation center in Reno, receives an average of 1,000 donations a week, said Delleha Kaamasate, a donor processor for Biomat. Since January, about 700 people donated their plasma, Kaamasate said.

Daniel Whittemore is one of them. Whittemore sat in the Biomat’s waiting room for the sixth time Saturday. He needed $30 so he could put gas in his car.

Whittemore, a 22-year-old unemployed Reno man, donates his plasma about twice a week to cover living expenses. He hopes one day to return to school.

“Nobody is hiring now,” Whittemore said.

He said donating plasma makes him feel good because he knows he is helping people.

But he doesn’t see himself donating after he gets a steady job. “I wouldn’t recommend this as a job,” he said.

Higher enrollment poses a problem:UNR looks at record budget cuts and population Pacemaker, 2009

The University of Nevada, Reno is facing two conflicting milestones in its history — the largest proposed budget cut and the greatest number of enrolled students in its 135-yearhistory. The friction of these benchmarks forces the school to answer the question of how to provide classes and services for students with less money.

Already, proposed budget cuts up to 49 percent of state money has cost UNR its free tutoring services, academic centers, career counseling and faculty their jobs. Now, the university expects to see a 1.39 percent increase in in students for fall 2009, bringing total enrollment to more than 17,000 students, according to an institutional analysis.

“Is there a concern about paying for more students in the current budget environment? Yes,” UNR President Milton Glick said. “But we’re making it our top priority to make sure students get the classes they need.

Their choices might be less optimal but they will have them.”

Despite fewer class choices and monetary concerns, Glick said he thinks students are still choosing UNR because the university has established a strong enough reputation to appeal to prospective students.

“We are facing budget concerns, but we’re not alone in facing those,” Jane Tors, a spokeswoman for UNR said. “Institutions in neighboring states are experiencing budget problems too.”

Tors said enrollment caps recently implemented at many institutions in California may also be a cause of the increase.

But whether expected enrollment will come to fruition with a stilluncertain budget is in question.

“There’s always a possibility [enrollment] might change,” Bruce Shively, the associate vice president for budget and planning analysis at UNR, said.

“If things come back from Carson City and there’s huge raises in tuition, that might cause those numbers to drop.”

In the capital, the legislators hope to finalize the budget by May 8, they said in Friday’s work session. Until

then, they are sorting out whether to change the funding formula for Nevada schools and how federal stimulus dollars will come into play.

“Our budget is somewhat driven by enrollment, there is per-pupil funding, so there would be some money coming in [with the enrollment increase],” Tors said.

UNR now annually receives $11,000 per full-time equivalent, or every 12 credits students take.

But on Friday, the Nevada System of Higher Education requested that legislators change the funding formula which leaves the amount UNR will receive per student up in the air.

Now the state operates on a model that gives money to schools based on a three-year average of enrollment.

NSHE requested the model change to a one-year average for the 2009-11 biennium. The legislature will have to approve by the end of its session in early June.

The change is under consideration because large enrollment swings at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the College of Southern Nevada create inaccuracies in funding those institutions on the three-year average.

Provost Marc Johnson, who handles the budget at UNR, said the school would initially benefit from a one-year formula, but said he think the three-year model is more appropriate because it’s more stable.

“We may have enrollment gyrations, but with a three-year formula we don’t have funding gyrations,” he said.

NSHE Executive Vice Chancellor Dan Klaich, who would support a change for the upcoming biennium only, said it’s about finding a model that gives all institutions adequate funding based on enrollment.

But implementing a new formula now is still a risk, he said.

“We’ve never applied the [one-year] formula in this situation,” Klaich said.

“Now we are looking at it in a declining revenue. We’re cautious about just applying it. With significant cuts, it will be difficult for institutions to project growth trends.”

Glick said he supports the one-year model for the one biennium and thinks the problems with the threeyear model stem from how it was built. The three-year model was built for growing revenue, rather than a

declining economy, he said.

Federal stimulus may bring relief In response to the recent recession, President Barack Obama signed a recovery act in February that makes states eligible for federal stimulus dollars, including money specifically set aside for education.

In order to receive the money, Nevada must fund education to its 2006 levels in the 2009-11 biennium, which is about $270 million more than what Gov. Jim Gibbons proposed in his budget.

The governor’s office can apply for a waiver, but hasn’t yet done so.

The office also hasn’t applied for the stimulus dollars.

Legislators said they were frustrated with the lack of communication with the governor’s office on the budget because they are trying to make final decisions within three weeks. State Senate Majority Leader Steven Horsford and State Budget Director Andrew Clinger got into a tiff in Friday’s budget work session in which Horsford accused the governor’s office of holding the budget “hostage”.

Clinger said he doesn’t understand the legislative budget analysis because he hasn’t seen it. Horsford replied that it is available.

Legislators said they need to communicate with the governor’s office because they need to know how to divvy up the state’s money, which depends on how stimulus money will come into play.

Clinger told the legislators Friday that the governor’s office was waiting for federal waiver guidelines that have yet to be released before filing either of the applications.

The governor’s office is also still deciding whether to submit the waiver, because the state should be able to meet requirements because of the $220 million of state funds that were freed up thanks to Medicaid, he said.

“I think what’s very clear to us at this point, though, is that regardless of whether we get a waiver or not, the federal government is requiring that education be funded at a certain level and that level is not met in the governor’s budget,” Assembly Speaker Barbara Buckley said Friday.

“It makes sense for us to take this education stimulus money because we can restore some of the proposed cuts to education.”

Student falls into inexplicable coma

By Maddison Cervantes On April Fool’s Day, Metsihate Bertukan received a text message from her 20-yearold cousin Aden Hailu, a University of Nevada, Reno, freshman saying that she had admitted herself to Saint Mary’s Regional Medical Center due to abdominal pain.

Bertukan originally assumed the message was a joke, considering the date. It was not until she received a picture of Hailu sticking her tongue out in a hospital bed that Bertukan called her cousin to determine the reason for her admittance.

Results from Hailu’s laboratory tests, such as a pelvic exam, ultrasound and CAT scans, seemed normal to the doctors.

However, Hailu was not responding to the IV fluids given to her, and her vital signs had been inconsistent since she was admitted.

Doctors then insisted that Hailu undergo exploratory surgery to detect the source of her illness.

Hailu, who Bertukan described as a presumably healthy girl, went into cardiac

arrest on the operating table. She is now suffering from severe brain damage as a consequence of edema, or brain swelling.

According to Bertukan, the last word she and her family have received from the doctors is that Hailu is braindead.

Hailu has been attached to a ventilator since the surgery, she has been receiving medication to prevent seizure activity and medication to stabilize her blood pressure and temperature as needed.

Additionally, Hailu’s family has been informed by the hospital that her insurance will soon exhaust. As a result, Bertukan has created a GoFundMe profile in order to raise money for her cousin’s treatment.

Bertukan stated on the profile that according to Hailu’s neurological diagnosis, she is in a persistent vegetative state and doctors have emphasized to her family that there is no chance of Hailu recovering her higher functions such as thought and action.

“In a subtle way, we feel pressured to make a life-ending decision but [Hailu] is only 20-years-old with no history of illness

or family illness,” Bertukan said. “This news not solely deteriorated my entire family but is very difficult to make a decision especially since the cause of her primary illness remains a mystery.”

Bertukan stated that the only way Saint Mary’s doctors can explain Hailu’s condition is by claiming that it is a mystery. Therefore, attempting to make a life-ending decision with very little knowledge currently seems

impossible for Bertukan and the rest of Hailu’s family.

During our days when Richard Bryan was student body president (l958) and my being either news editor (l958) or editor (l959-60) he was calling for development of a student court and we thought that not a good idea, that regular courts could serve students just fine.

So we headlined Dick as King Richard and his Court, to his mild dissatisfaction. We were all good natured about it. But we did point out that if he as president of the ASUN, which owned the Sagebrush at the time, ever sued us for libel he, as technical publisher of the paper heading the then publications board, would be the chief defendant in his own libel trial.

To this day, now in our 80s, I frequently call him King Richard saying that even out ranked his eventual distinguished titles as Governor

My days at UNR as editor of The Sagebrush are filled with many memories of the various and infamous University and College debates and protests that created upheaval amongst students of the 60’s and more.

From agitator, Stokely Carmichael, to an era of amazing music, that 60’s era redefined America and its culture in so many ways and had a profound impact on students around the country.

For the most part, UNR was able to dodge the horrific extremes we witnessed at campuses like Berkeley, Cal, Wisconsin, Kent State and others, but we had our share of fiery and compassionate debates over politics, culture and the future direction of our nation.

However, for me, the most memorable edition of the Sagebrush I was part of was the result of a tragic event that occurred on December 18, 1965. That very sad day when we lost our Student Body President, Michael “Foot” Ingersoll to a skydiving accident.

Mike was a member of Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) fraternity and even though I was a Sigma Alpha Epsilon (SAE) member, we bonded and

He in turn happily addresses me as John Peter (as in Zenger) who in 1734 established truth as a defense in libel and got the ball rolling for creation of the First Amendment some 55 years later. Dick commented at the dedication of his unique celebratory statue on the campus that he learned one thing for sure as a campus politician—Don’t get into a fight with people who buy ink by the barrel.

Dick chose to have his bronze statuedpersonal showing him seated reading the Sagebrush. That so endeared this outstanding Nevada leader to the Sagebrush Alumni Chapter that it voted him to be an honorary member!

Pretty good standing, or in this case sitting/reading, for an ASUN President/Nevada Governor/U.S. Senator and, yes, even King.

He did win the battle and along with others installed the student court.

And we’re all still pals—fifty eight years later.

became very close friends and members of several university organizations including Coffin and Key, where I served as President.

The campus and the community were stunned to learn of his death, and the pain and grief of the loss of this extraordinary and beloved student leader was staggering for many, including myself.

We were determined that we would work day and night to put together a memorial Sagebrush issue in Mike’s honor.

It was a labor of love for all of us on the staff, and we worked thru the night and even used a special, slick bonded paper stock for that publication so that it would be even more memorable.

I still remember writing last minute stories and reaching out to those who knew Mike while recapping his life, his dreams and goals.

And I remember too, that Ted Marston’s wonderful family, who owned Sparks Printers where we printed our bi-weekly editions of The Sagebrush, stayed up with us throughout the night to ensure we got everything put together and perfect.

I’ve never forgotten Mike Ingersoll. And I’ve never forgotten the deep appreciation I had for my staff and for the family in Sparks that dropped everything they were doing that night to make sure we met

Editors of the Sagebrush usually have no problem remembering unique aspects of their year. We definitely had our one-of-a-kind cast of characters, controversial issues and memorable moments – it was the late 1970s after all. But the one thing I remember that made our year special was the old building we inhabited.

Sagebrush staffs preceding our 1978-79 group had a pretty cool space in the basement of Morrill Hall. I worked for the Sagebrush beginning with the fall of 1975, and loved working in the bowels of the oldest building on campus. I remember the feeling of walking across the Quad on a brisk October Saturday afternoon to file a football game story on deadline for the Nevada Appeal.

In the basement office alone, typing away on a cutting edge IBM Selectric, the history of the leaky, brick-walled space would wash over me.

Needless to say, most of us were upset when a renovation of Morrill Hall began in early 1978 and the Sagebrush staff got the boot.

But the move was just across

our deadlines for this tribute for Mike.

Overall, my memories at UNR were filled with a sense of accomplishment, pride and laughter, personal growth and coming of age. But the shocking death of such an outstanding young man and friend is something that I will never forget. His mortality struck a blow to our own personal invincibility, and the severity of the loss we all felt when he was gone, has stayed with me forever.

I have said often that Mike could have done so much because he had all the great attributes of intelligence, loyalty, commitment and integrity.

He was someone that could have been Nevada’s Governor, or U.S. Senator, and I think that is something he would have considered with his great love for Nevada’s history and its traditions.

For many, Mike was the first real friend that we knew, loved, and lost. And I remember so clearly the disbelief and deep sadness in the eyes of students and faculty when we gathered to pay tribute to our friend on that chilly winter day in 1965.

I was grateful that because of my involvement with the Sagebrush I had that unique opportunity to remember Mike by paying tribute to him in a special way. It’s truly one the most enduring memories I had during my time at UNR.

the Quad, and suddenly we had a lot more room than the cramped quarters of Morrill Hall provided. All of the publications – the Sagebrush, the yearbook Artemisia and the literary magazine, Brushfire, were relocated into the doomed Mechanical Arts Building, an historic icon in its own right. The building was scheduled to be torn down the next summer to make way for the new College of Business and we were tasked with giving it one last home before its demise.

By the time the school year started in August of 1978, we had been there a semester and were warming to the idea of the new space, embracing the freedom of being the lone inhabitants of an entire, albeit drafty, building.

All of the student publications were now in one location taking up the entire top second floor, which stretched the length of the building. As a result, the publications staffs bonded, eager to share ideas, friendship, personnel and equipment. Publications had gone through several rough years in the mid-70s and we felt embattled but on the rebound.

My office looked out over the Quad and it was easy to get lost in thought up there and gaze out at all the familiar faces milling about – the campus only had

Ten single-spaced pages follow — a letter from the outgoing Sagebrush editor to the incoming Sagebrush editor, Bryan Allison. We had worked together at the paper for three years, developing a friendship built on endless hours in the office and a shared passion for newspapers. The recommendations and advice in those 10 single-spaced pages ranges from mundane instructions about AP style to confidential evaluations of Sagebrush colleagues.

I must have written this document in early May 1988 — more than 30 years ago. It was a time when the printed word still ruled, when the Internet was still just a concept. Bryan and I, and some others,

“There was never yet an uninteresting life. Such a thing is an impossibility. Inside of the dullest exterior, there is a drama, a comedy and a tragedy.” – Mark Twain My tenure as Sagebrush Editor-inChief from 1976 to 1977 was, by that definition, a string of more interesting life events than I ever expected.

During my junior year as a broadcast journalism major and intern for KOH, a local news radio station, I’d been covering the tragic and needless death of John Davies, a UNR student who died of alcohol poisoning during a Sundowner hazing near Pyramid Lake. I had some strong opinions about that incident, so in the spring of that year, I applied for the position of editor of Sagebrush and won it.

By the time school started the following fall, the Sundowner trial was ready to begin and it was a real surprise to all of us on the paper, that the wrongful death lawsuit by the Davies family would fail. However, a few years later, the Nevada Supreme Court actually overturned that finding. It was very difficult taking on such an established off-campus organization as the Sundowners, for many reasons. Some leaders in the Reno area had been Sundowners and fraternity members while attending UNR, and had participated in similar hazing events.

By Christmas break, I thought we really had a great team of assistant editors, reporters, journalists and ad sales staff. We were putting out two papers a week in an era of paste-up and typesetting using electronic typewriters, and went on to win many awards for writing, photography and coverage of sports and current events. Fellow journalism students sat across from me in the basement of Morrill Hall and discussed serious reporting, something that really hadn’t happened since Buddy Frank’s days as editor.

There were some great times. The best feeling was when my circulation manager and I would drive around the campus at dawn on the days the paper came out, filling boxes as our fellow students and friends raced to class. We were very proud of Sagebrush and its role as the student/professional newspaper at UNR. Then the drama took a turn for the worse – two fraternity men with

about 6,500 undergrads then so you seemed to know everybody.

It was a wonderful time to be at Nevada.

With demolition pending, we tended not to think long term, and didn’t worry much about preserving the wood floors or paneled walls where we proudly wrote the exact times we finished production for each of our eventual 61 twice-weekly editions. We revelled in the messy quarters and the disorganization, and responded in kind when the editor of the student paper at UNLV editorially mocked our shabby quarters after a visit.

Separated from other university employees, we hung speakers from the rafters of the high vaulted ceilings, hooked up a turntable, and blasted the current tunes of the day. Even in 2018, if I hear Grateful Dead’s “Terrapin Station,” or Warren Zevon’s “Johnny Strikes up the Band” it brings back the memory of our long Monday and Thursday layout nights.

The space was made even more unforgettable when you looked at the area our news editor occupied. Just behind him were several rows of tiered benches that looked down at his desk, which, rumor had it, had been a medical research table where cadavers

lived and breathed the Sagebrush. We were in the office more than we were in class or at home. Right or wrong — surely wrong, in hindsight — personal relationships and schoolwork took a back seat to the paper.

After writing this document and graduating a couple of weeks later, I devoted 25 years to the newspaper business as a reporter, city editor, managing editor, columnist and publisher. It was a great run.

Looking back at “The Final Word,” I see that this letter contains the seeds of most everything I practiced and preached over the course of my professional newspaper career.

Not everything in the letter was deep and meaningful, though.

“If I were you, I would get some new chairs for the office. Somewhere. Somehow. The chairs we have now suck. All of them.”

And: “If I were you, I would accommodate staffers who want to play some of their own music and I would not criticize it too much. Some people, as you know, cannot

their eyes on political power in the Student Senate approached me while I was studying in the library right after Christmas. Their proposition – either I would support their bids for election or I would face their wrath, in the form of a direct attempt to railroad me out of my post, based on petty charges. They said they had the support of the current VP of Finance and Publications. My response was a fearless one – “Do what you want, if you think you can get by me and my staff.” Sometimes comedy isn’t pretty, they say.

The two men, who were juniors at the time, began campaigning for student body president and vice-president a month or so later.

The battle began. Life became very difficult as I tried to keep my grades up, the newspaper running and taking on the endless meetings and encounters that preceded a final vote by the Student Senate to fire me, a few weeks before the election.

One of my challengers was elected and the other was rejected when the candidate we supported, who was an independent, went on to become student body president.

Not only did our paper cover the campaigns, but we also covered our own story, and did our best to provide a balanced reporting. Additionally, I was still doing a daily call-in show for KOH Radio with Reno on-air personality Bob Chez, and he and I shared my entire ordeal on-air with his listeners in the Reno community.

Looking back, my termination inspired my fellow journalism students to take over and hold the Sagebrush editorship for many years, even to modern times. It was clear that student government who controls the editorial and financial management of the campus press was not a good idea, and it was a clear departure from the concept of a free and independent press outside the campus.

I had to take two more classes in the summer to finish up, but another tragedy struck before my graduation was complete. In August 1977, I met my good friend and the former Sagebrush sales manager for an afternoon of sailing on the south end of Pyramid Lake. He had just bought a new day-sailor type of boat and I thought it would be fun to try it out with him. At the end of that fateful day, we were righting the boat which had been capsized by a strong gust of wind blowing off-shore, when we discovered that the rudder came off.

I knew nothing about sailing, and

he knew just a little more. It was painfully obvious that we couldn’t control the boat any longer. Hours passed as we struggled to stay with it, drifting further and further away from our cars on the beach toward the distant eastern shore.

Darkness fell, the water and sky turned completely black and we were desperate. A mile from shore and out of reach of any help, we clung to the boat with water up to our chins in two-foot swells.

My friend became progressively incoherent as hypothermia set in.

Sometime later, he quit breathing as he sat right next to me, passing away while I could only watch incredulously and wonder if I would be next.

Somehow, I gritted my teeth and, determined to survive, and used the daggerboard to paddle myself downwind to Dago Bay on the opposite shore, arriving there around four a.m. with my friend’s body still in the small plastic sailboat. I dug into the pocket of my cut-offs. There was a lighter, so I built a fire on the beach with some wood and a tire, and warmed my chilled bones until the sun came up.

Hiking out of the area in bare feet, I kept my mind focused on just one thing – survival. I guess you could say that’s the lesson I learned in that decade of my life. Out of survival evolves resilience. I am always grateful for what I have, and still hopeful to receive what I desire.

Currently, I’m testing my resilience yet again, at the age of 65. I’ve made a career of being self-employed as an entrepreneur and artist working with live performance animation, a form of virtual reality. My company is called CHOPS Live Animation. At this time, I’m attempting the most ambitious project ever, creating a computer-generated virtual celebrity in the form of Yankees catcher and an All-American favorite – Yogi Berra. My other creation is a second company called Invirtua, whose purpose is to help kids with autism have better therapy sessions with the assistance of interactive virtual characters and software that I have developed.

Each day, I count my many blessings, thanking my family, my friends and my supportive communities in recent years, particularly where I volunteer at the Thunderbird Lodge Preservation Society, the Carson City Rotary Club and the Tahoe Center for Spiritual Living. I’m very grateful to survive that August night in 1977 and have an interesting life. Thanks for letting me share it with you.

were dissected some 50 years before, adding to the creepiness factor of the supposed haunted building.

We gave the old place a good Saturday night send off party after putting out the last regular issue in May 1979, thinking the building had just a few weeks before demolition. But the destruction

handle that stuff as well as others.”

And: “You might try to set up a deal sort of like Guy Clifton had a few years back where each office staffer takes out his own garbage or all of it on a certain day. Garbage truly is a big problem here if people are not willing to take it out.”

But I offered a few fairly mature insights as well. For example, I impressed upon my successor that as the editor, he ultimately will be responsible for things that go wrong: “Getting everything done in a reasonable amount of time is always your problem and yours alone. If the paper is late, it is your fault. Period. It is your responsibility to make people work faster and to keep their minds on their work.”

We did not have a faculty adviser, as many student papers do, but there was one journalism professor we were compelled to impress: Jake Highton. He was a newspaperman to the core and had strong opinions about what should and shouldn’t be done. My advice for dealing with Jake:

was delayed and publications ended up with one more semester there, and one more group was able to savor a special space for a few more months.

I’m thankful that the Sagebrush was part of giving it a proper goodbye.

“Talk to Jake a lot but don’t always agree with him. I know you know that but he can be convincing at times and later on you will realize you know better than to do what he suggests. On the other hand, he is right most of the time.”

Clearly, I had one foot out of college life already when I advised: “As you know, the office the past three years has at times been a madhouse that scares some people away. I think that kind of scenario should be avoided next year, if possible.”

Some of my advice was just ridiculous, such as: “Since you may be here by yourself on these [pre-production] nights, be sure to bring fresh music and relatively healthy food — chips instead of candy — for the ride.” Chips instead of candy?

Talking to Bryan about this recently — we both live in Las Vegas these days and neither of us works in the newspaper business anymore — he told me he read “The Final Word” several times during his tenure as Sagebrush editor and tried to follow its suggestions, with the exception of this one:

“Make sure to do your goddamn homework. There is always something better you could be doing other than homework but you have to remember that the real reason you are here is to take classes. It is true, whether we like it or not.”

Bryan did not follow this advice, but he produced a fine newspaper week in and week out.

It would be arrogant and probably inaccurate to assert that the late 1980s were one of the Sagebrush’s glory eras, even if it feels that way to me. We did some excellent work. Several incredibly talented journalists saw their first bylines. But I will submit that the passion for and dedication to the Sagebrush that we exhibited during those years could not be exceeded.

We were all in, consumed by a desire to produce a great paper on every single deadline, no matter how many hours it took. We made mistakes — oh yes, many mistakes — but never, ever because we were lazy or didn’t care.

I served as Editor-in-Chief of The Nevada Sagebrush from May 2013 to December of 2013. If that sounds like a shorter-than-normal tenure for an EIC, that’s because it is. I can’t speak to the length of time that passed from the time I resigned to the time that another editor resigned, nor can I speculate how many editors have ever resigned before their nominated time was up, but I can assure you two things: resignation of a position is a difficult decision that does not go without extensive internal debate; and second, resignation is not defeat.

In anticipation of celebrating the 125th anniversary of this esteemed periodical, I broke out my archived collections of The Sagebrush from the two years I served within its ranks. I began as a copy editor, was appointed to news editor the night of President Obama’s second election, and elected as EIC the year after.

In those two years, some wild and scandalous happenings manifested themselves within campus life at ol’ Nevada U. These were some politically hot times in ASUN. The vice president of ASUN was impeached on, what he and many—myself included—believe were largely misplaced accusations inspired by little more than the petty, early-20-something ego trips of white males (again, some things never change). This ultimately led to an entirely verified list of every then-current Coffin and Keys member presented to me privately in my office. I never published the list and I don’t regret that decision, regardless of CK grading me with an “F” during my tenure as news editor, only to be flipped around and graded with an “A” during my reign as EIC. Power goes a long way, but so does understanding. I’m friends with some of those boys to this day, and later that year, the ASUN president and vice president both went public with their CK membership.

Soaring blues, crisp reds, deep greens…we had created something which we thought was rather cool, representative of the student interest, and showcased what the Sagebrush could become.

Very few people saw it.

I was awoken by my live-in girl-

friend, telling me “we’ve been attacked!” Heading to the television downstairs for more information, we tuned into CNN just in time to see the second plane hit the towers.

It was then that I knew action was needed, and I took off for the Sagebrush. Once there, I called .staff to see who could come in to assist in creating what would become the first Special Edition

den and tragic bicycling accident on Sierra Street. Lani Craig passed away after suffering a head injury when she fell on her bike, and it’s those kind of stories that were sobering to write and difficult to stomach, but also must be written. If you have ever passed the corner of Sierra and College and seen decorative offerings on the light pole, that’s for Lani.

It is a good reminder of good friends and the respect they are owed in life and death.

And death happens, we must admit that. For a while now, I’ve been taking a trip down memory lane after beginning this column with telling you that I resigned as my post of EIC without ever telling you why.

It’s fitting that the death of my time as EIC was prompted by the deaths of Michael Landsberry and Jose Reyes, the victim and perpetrator, respectively, of the Sparks Middle School shooting.

Almost five years ago on October 21, 12-year-old Joseph Reyes opened fire on the playground of Sparks Middle School with a semi-automatic handgun, injuring two and killing 45-year-old math teacher Michael Landsberry before taking his own life. At the time of the shooting, I was a freelance reporter for Reuters and was called to cover the shooting. Long story short, the things I saw, heard, and experienced that day shook me all the way to my core. This wasn’t what I signed up for in journalism and it wasn’t the kind of person I wanted to be. I want to help people, to nurture them and advocate for change for them and for myself and future generations.

It was not enough for me to report on the facts without wanting to embrace the children who witnessed a homicide-suicide that day.

I bowed out a few weeks later after much thought and a very public conversation. I have always believed in transparency for those in power.

Many people did not like me or understand why I did what I did, perhaps even thought I was weak and not suited for the job because of capacity to feel so deeply (at least, that is what Sandy Rodriguez of ASUN told me before I began my tenure). They saw it as abandonment and failure and disregard.

Many others, however, respected

my choice and understood my own conflicting feelings of needing to find a path that would mold my love for words, editing, truth seeking, and nurturing into one in a manner that didn’t make it feel as though objectivity and subjectivity were ideals exclusively and always at war with one another.

We don’t have to be at war with one another, and we don’t have to please everybody, either. I have always believed in the value of making my reputation on the pillars of being honest and unmerciful, but it turns out mercy is a key ingredient in storytelling from the human perspective, enveloping the way that stories live in and grow from the hearts and minds of many. Mercy is also a key ingredient of the law, and it is only now, as I reflect on my time at The Sagebrush and what I learned from it, that I see that all of the decisions of my youth, within and without The Nevada Sagebrush, have led me to this path.

The Nevada Sagebrush is, was, and I hope always will remain one of the finest college newspapers you will ever come across. I will always speak highly of the caliber of product put out of the third floor of the Joe, because I know first hand how much time and how many hands it takes. The value of news, however, is learning more intricately about how human beings operate, what drives them to do what they do, and how they continue to support one another despite differences, hard times, or obstacles any person finds themselves in. The Sagebrush embedded in me further the belief that all walks of life can come together for a common purpose to support each other—professionally, personally, emotionally, mentally. I don’t regret my resignation and I never have regretted my time at The Sagebrush—it has helped make me who I have become and I firmly believe that without leaving, I may have lost my love for journalism altogether. It is a great opportunity I have to bring that wisdom into the law now, where perhaps I can sit on courts one day that make laws about things like gun control, coming full circle to places where critical decisions were first made that changed my course forever.

Without a copy editor, layout editor, photo editor, or staffers, the rest of us relied on what our coursework at the Reynolds’s School of Journalism had taught us – to relentlessly follow the story wherever it leads. In this case, it was to report on the impact of this event on the student body.

When I think of my time at the Nevada Sagebrush, one word usually comes to mind: camaraderie.

I had the pleasure of being part of three awesome staffs at the newspaper, and they were all unique in their own ways. From my first year as assistant sports editor under Ben Miller to our crew winning a National Pacemaker Award in 2015 (the first time the Sagebrush had won since 2011), the Sagebrush always had a diverse cast of characters. So, to do my best A Tribe Called Quest impression, here’s my “Midnight Marauders” album cover of Sagebrush alumni from my era.

My initial introduction to the newspaper was as a freshman in the spring of 2012, and it was a fairly inauspicious start to my student journalism career.

My very first editor, the great Juan Lopez, told me that my initial draft of a story on the men’s club lacrosse team would, “get an A in English class, but an F in journalism.”

Certainly this was a tough lesson to learn, but as a business major, I wasn’t exactly channeling my inner Hemingway each day. Nonetheless, I pressed on and was part of the staff later that fall. This start turned out to be the foundation of my time at the newspaper.

Our crew that autumn was certainly the most eclectic. From our news editor quitting after my first deadline to my first “Sager Rager,” headlined by copy editor Ryan Miyashiro and Julian Rhodes, we had a staff that did not lack in personality. This was also the time when I connected with my closest confidant on staff and a bigger pro wrestling fan than myself: sports editor Eric Uribe. Mr. Uribe hailed from Elko, Nevada and became my biggest source of creative inspiration at the paper. This was also the start of a new era of Nevada athletics with Chris Ault stepping down to kick off the Brian Polian era and Doug Knuth taking over as athletic director that spring. Being front row to history is something I will never forget.

Inverted pyramid writing was alive and strong during my tenure as editor in 1962-63 because type was cast from hot lead and metal doesn’t compress, so wordy items were cut from the bottom and the lead re-melted. Lead was money, a limitation that guided me in an especially memorable and troublesome conflict.

Nonetheless our crew responded in an admirable fashion, and we had our strongest semester that spring in terms of pound for pound quality content produced. See BOLINE page A2 home countries were at war. Each attacked the other. After three weeks, I called a halt to the letters with an editorial telling them that if they wanted to fight, they could go home and do it there.

The next week, a dummy with my name was hanging from the fire escape over the Dining Commons.

The Sagebrush office was in the basement of the Journalism Building (now run by University Administration). We could hear Department Chairman A.L. Higginbotham walking the floor above with his heavy metal leg braces. The paper was printed in Sparks on Monday and Thursday evenings and distributed on campus next morning.

Law-changing journalist Nick Coltrain to receive 'The Jake'

By Annie Flanzraich As a journalist, Nick Coltrain takes on state and local governments, changes open records laws and advocates for the First Amendment.

It’s just the way his Reynolds School of Journalism professor Jake Highton would’ve wanted it.

Coltrain, the editor of the Nevada Sagebrush from 2008–2009, is this year’s recipient of “The Jake,” an award presented by the Nevada Sagebrush Alumni Chapter named for Highton, who died in 2017.

During his 30-year tenure at the Reynolds School, Highton raised generations of journalists to champion the First Amendment, practice accuracy, write clearly, report fearlessly, and adhere to AP style. Each year since his death, the Nevada Sagebrush Alumni Chapter awards “The Jake” to an active journalist who attended the Reynolds

School and best exemplifies the values Highton instilled. “(This is a) powerful sense of validation to know that I'm carrying on this torch and that people think that I'm worthy of carrying on this torch,” Coltrain said.

Coltrain will receive the award on Oct. 19 during the Nevada Sagebrush Alumni Chapter’s annual dinner, which celebrates the 125th birthday of the paper this year.

Coltrain began his journalism career at the Nevada Sagebrush in 2005 after inadvertently finding the student newspaper's offices while searching for frisbees from Wolf Pack radio. At first, the smell of free pizza drew him to the paper. Journalism, comradery and mentorship made him stay, Coltrain said.

“I went from a kid who grew up listening to too much punk rock to realizing this is a noble calling that can be a societal good,” Coltrain said.

After graduating from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2009, Coltrain's journalism career continued in Carson City, Twin Falls, Idaho, and Athens, Ga. Now, Coltrain is a reporter at The Fort Collins Coloradoan and focuses on government, politics and general investigations.

During his time at the Coloradoan, Coltrain’s dedication to the First Amendment led to a modernization of Colorado state open record laws. In 2015, he requested records from Colorado State University to investigate potential unequal pay practices. When the university delivered a 145-page printout and declined to provide that information digitally, Coltrain spent months recreating and then analyzing a digital database. His resulting story led to raises for a quarter of full-time female professors at CSU and a drop in raises for executive-level administrators. Alumni Chapter History

By Amy Beck On Feb. 28, 2012, a group of eight former Sagebrushers met at Craft Wine & Beer in Midtown to discuss their ambitious dream of creating an alumni chapter. Our mission was simple — “Unite the old, help the young.” After a couple hours of brainstorming with beers, the dream started to become a reality.

We wanted to make sure that we gathered at least once a month and planned to host an annual dinner to raise funds to send current staff members to conferences or help with other expenses.

After a few meetings, bylaws were drafted and a formal application was turned into the university. The Nevada Sagebrush Alumni Chapter was officially founded in June 2012.

The last six years have been a whirlwind of successful events and growth. We stuck to our goals of meeting monthly in what we affectionately call Deadwine…aptly named because instead of being on Deadline, now we go and Deadwine. And this Friday we will host our seventh annual alumni chapter dinner, where we will award the Frank McCulloch Lifetime Achievement and Jake Highton honorary awards and celebrate the 125th anniversary of the publication that bonds us and is the foundation of our Sagebrush family.

In addition to these activities, we have hosted Bagna Cauda dinners, summer barbecues, tailgates, pizza parties with the current Sagebrush staff, and are working on a project with the current staff and Special Collections on campus to digitize the entire history of the Sagebrush. These events and initiative are the reason that we were recognized as Chapter of the Year by the Nevada Alumni Association in 2017.

I have been our chapter president for more than six years now and have been introduced me to more accomplished alumni than I knew existed in our Sagebrush history. One particular highlight was meeting McCulloch in his Santa Rose, Calif. a few years back when Dan Hinxman and I had the honor of presenting him with the Sagebrush Lifetime Achievement Award. We pulled his bound

reporting spurred the state to pass a law to make records digitally available in 2017.

Coltrain’s work toward transparency in Colorado was a key reason why Highton’s daughter, Jett Highton Stansbury, believed he should win the award.

“There was nothing more sacred to Jake than the First Amendment,” Highton Stansbury wrote in an email.

Coltrain received the 2017 First Amendment Award from the Society of Professional Journalists Colorado Pro Chapter and in 2015 and 2016 he received the Colorado Press Association Service to the First Award related to open records work.

Throughout his career, Coltrain's stories have shown a commitment to watchdog journalism.

Despite McCulloch being near blind, he flipped through those pages, pointed out names from headlines, and told us stories from his time on the university campus. As Hinxman and I left, McCulloch said, “this is the most fun I’ve had sharing memories in years.” I jotted that note in my phone as we walked to our car and I periodically pull it up from time to time to remind me of the importance of our chapter and reminisce about meeting one of the greats.

We would like to congratulate each of you who worked at the Sagebrush, no matter whether you had one byline or were editorin-chief. Without you, the publication would not exist to this day.

Each of you make up our Sagebrush family and we look forward to seeing you at a future Sagebrush Alumni event.

Each time he works on a story to hold those in power accountable, Coltrain said he hears Highton’s voice.

“Jake's idea of the role of the press in terms of speaking truth to power was transformational for me as a reporter,” Coltrain said. “When people are being obstinate, I think about Jake.”

The professor's feared and sometimes beloved red pen also appears in Coltrain's mind as well.

“I do hear him when I'm editing my stories or I'm reading them after they published,” Coltrain said. “I can feel his red pen looping around and through my copy.”

In the tradition of Walter Van Tilburg Clark and Robert Laxalt, John Trent has served as Nevada’s storyteller for a generation. Since his early days as a feature writer for the Sagebrush in the late 1980s, to a fine newspaper career at the Las Vegas Review-Journal and Reno Gazette-Journal, to serving as an assistant press secretary and speech writer for Nevada Gov. Kenny Guinn, to serving as an adjunct professor in the Reynolds School of Journalism to his current stint in the university’s communications department, John has been touching, entertaining and educating us with his words.

He has done so in a typically understated, self-effacing manner in which he will deflect credit to everyone but himself. The best stories, he will tell you, are the ones that allow the author to stay out of the way. The best stories also show a depth of understanding by the writer and that is where John truly excels. He has been a part of Nevada and the University of Nevada virtually all his life, loves and knows the history and relishes in sharing it.

While at the Sagebrush and barely in his 20s, John wrote a profile of basketball star Billy Allen that read like a Frank Deford piece for Sports Illustrated, incorporating both his knowledge of music and knowledge of sports in an awardwinning story.

During his time with the Review-Journal and Gazette-Journal, John was twice honored as the Nevada Sportswriter of the Year.

People who knew our late Gov. Kenny Guinn, know he was not comfortable as a public speaker, but his State of the State speeches were tremendous as John was able to craft a speech that allowed the governor to shine.

It has been his work at the University of Nevada over the past two decades that has allowed John’s writing to truly shine. Few people know he wrote the bulk of the manuscript for the book that told of the first 100 years of sports at the university.

His features in the Nevada Silver & Blue alumni magazine are always interesting and educational.

And he has been the lead writer on some of the most difficult stories a university communications department must deal with – the deaths of monumental figures in the university’s history.

John’s obituaries on past presidents Joe Crowley and Milt Glick, on longtime journalism professor Jake Highton and many others are the definitive pieces on their careers.

It’s become cliché to say that someone is an even better person than they are a (insert profession), but in John’s case, it’s absolutely true. He is one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and he had his wife, Jill, and their daughters Annie and Katie, are well-know and well-loved in the ultra running community.

Volume 87 No. 44 March 24, 1981 Shit was all Sagebrush production manager Randy Gragg saw and mostly smelled when he entered the Sagebrush office early Friday morning Gragg, who entered the office about 3 a.m. to do photographic work, said the hallway leading to the newsroom was “wall to wall manure” Gragg also said the doors to the newsroom and the editor’s office had been forced open and manure piled in both offices.

Elaine Wilson, associate editor, said that when she went to look for a Coffin and Key’s flier later that morning, she discovered the file on the organization was missing.

Coffin and Keys, and [an] all-male secret organization on campus, released a flier last semester that predicted the Sagebrush offices would be “full of shit.”

Despite these coincidences, Wilson insisted the Sagebrush “will not rush to a judgement as to who is responsible.

We’re going to let UNR police do their job, helping in any way we can.”

Aside from broken doors and a stolen file, glass frames covering several Sagebrush awards were also destroyed.

Condemnation of the burglary came from several quarters on campus.

UNR President Joe Crowley called the crime “both reprehensible and juvenile.

The university will certainly do what it can to bring the culprits to justice.”

ASUN President-elect Doc Bodensteiner said the break-in made him “sick.

Destruction of our property costs us money. We are lucky the damage wasn’t more expensive. Anything I can do to

stop this type of vandalism I will.”

Don Jessup, vice president for business, said he has instructed the UNR police to give the case high priority. Jessup added that what action that what action might be taken against the person responsible should they be caught is still very much up in the air. “It will depend on the circumstances in the case.”

ASUN President Stephanie Brown said, “It is ridiculous anyone would do something like this; it interferes with the whole operation of the Sagebrush.”

Nevada Athletics needs to terminate the football program

have an idea, and you’re going to think it’s crazy. Nevada athletics needs to terminate the football program.

If you haven’t been paying attention this season — and according to attendance numbers there are a lot of you —Nevada is 4-7 in what has been a terribly boring 2016 season. The fan turnout for Saturday’s Senior Day game against Utah State looked like a middle school play; in fact, it was the least attended game since at least 2011. To say that fans are upset with the football program is inaccurate. Fans are completely disinterested, which is worse than upset.

Smart businesses know when to cut losses and start over. The college football industry — more than any other college sport — is about how much money you have to spend on recruiting and facilities. If you don’t have the money, you have no chance of consistently competing with more affluent programs. According to a study authored by College Sports Solutions, Nevada has the smallest annual football budget in the Mountain West Conference: $7.02 million. Nevada relies heavily on fans to support the team through season ticket sales and donations, but Nevada ranked 10th out of 12 Mountain West schools in fan revenue last season and that number is trending downward.

Here’s the solution: cut the football program and sell off all the assets. People will become hysterical for about two months. Older fans who didn’t go to the Utah State game on Saturday will complain on Facebook and there might even be a protest outside the stadium, but

people will get over it. Here’s the reward: Nevada will find itself with a few million dollars in cash per year along with the money earned from selling off assets like Mackay Stadium, Legacy Hall and the mascot costumes, which have to be worth a fortune.

What exactly does the University do with the extra cash and newfound real estate? I have three ideas.

OPEN THE LARGEST COLLEGE BAR IN AMERICA ON TOP OF MACKAY News flash: college students like to drink alcohol. Have you seen the lines at The Rack lately? That place is making more money than Bernie Madoff in the ’90s. The only downside is it’s a $10 Uber from campus, and once you’re downtown you’re basically trapped for the night. Not anymore.

The new bar — let’s call it Mackay’s — will employ of-age students to bartend and run the business, and all profits will be pumped back into the school’s budget. Right now, a school administrator is reading this and saying, “It is ridiculous and unethical to have a public university utilize funds raised from an alcoholic institution.” Is it though? Over onethird of all funding for Nevada’s public schools comes from taxes on the gaming industry. The state is using people’s dependencies to fund the budget and it’s completely genius. The only difference here is the school is also running the bar.

Think about the kind of bar you could create with a few million dollars; it would make the Wal look like a Sonic Drive-In. It has to be at least three stories, host a live performer every weekend and include a foam pit. Mackay’s would be the most talked about college bar in America.

Wilson said members of the Sagebrush staff are angry and concerned about the break-in. “At this point we don’t know whether the break-in was done by someone who simply lacked the maturity to understand the significance of the crime or if there was a conscious effort to undermine press freedom on campus. In any case the whole episode smacks of Nazi tactics, and we don’t plan to take this act lying down,” Wilson said.

BUILD AN ENORMOUS PARKING GARAGE Finding a place to park at Nevada is harder than finding Osama bin Laden.

Students desperately circle neighborhoods and sketchy dirt lots every day in an effort to park their cars for free. Side note: if you get a parking citation, place the ticket under the windshield wiper of your car for a few weeks and fool the ticketer into thinking you’ve already been cited.

This garage would be absolutely massive, and the surge of parking passes created would drive down the price of parking across the campus and still increase revenue. A badass sky bridge would be built from the old stadium parking garage to the new parking garage and would serve as an ideal place for sorority girls to take dramatic Instagram pictures on the way to class.

The garage would include state of the art elevators and a lift service that takes students to different spots on campus.

Bottom line: convenient, cheap parking is better than an average football program.

OPEN A SNOWBOARDING/SKIING TRAIL This is definitely the most ambitious idea of the three, but it has the greatest potential. Nevada builds a snowboarding trail that starts at the intersection of McCarran and Virginia, whips by the medical school, turns toward the post office and then hits a perfect straightaway to the south end of the stadium.

According to Google Maps, the trail would range approximately 830 yards and would probably offer the speed and difficulty of the bunny hill at NorthStar.

Some students who eat at the Downunder Cafe in DC store feel because of experiences involving excess defecating, hair in their food and food poisoning, they are paying too much per year for meal plans.

Excessive diarrhea or first week of college led Chloe Zubka, a freshman at UNR, to refer to the after effects of eating at the Downunder Cafe and DC store as the “DC s****”. Zubka said she is certain that the Downunder Cafe and DC Store were the causes of her diarrhea.

“I don’t know what else it would have been,” Zubka said. “You come to a new environment; you’re eating completely different food that’s the only thing I was eating. I would think my eating is affecting the way my body is digesting food.”

Students who purchase meal plans are spending $7-9 per meal, depending on their meal plan, at the Downunder Cafe and the DC store. Students believe the food quality is not worth what they’re paying.

Some students believe the Downunder Cafe and DC store add preservatives to make students defecate more frequently in order to protect students who may have ingested a food allergy.

Russ Meyer, associate director of housing and dining operations at UNR, said the Downunder Cafe and DC store don’t add preservatives to the food they receive. he said the only thing that might be affecting students is the produce sanitizer the Downunder Cafe uses to make sure there are no contaminations in fresh produce, but even then, the product is safe.

Zubka isn’t the only students familiar with the “DC shits.” Jennifer Sheppard, a student visiting UNR from Foothill High School in Henderson, said she experienced stomach pains after ingesting food from the Downunder Cafe and the DC store.

Zubka said the DC store is “The most disgusting place to eat on campus,” and the Downunder Cafe is “the second most disgusting.” Zubka found a black hair in her shrimp scampi served last month at the Downunder Cafe and has heard similar experiences involving hair from students like Haleigh Harris, a fellow freshman attending UNR who recently found a black hair in her soup.

However, finding hair in her food is not the root of Zubka’s disdain for the DC store. Zubka believes she contracted food poisoning last semester from chicken served at the DC store.

“I ordered the grilled chicken and the meat must not have been cooked all the way because an hour later I threw up and I was throwing up having projectile diarrhea for the rest of the night,” Zubka said. “ I think I threw up maybe, like, a total of six or seven times. It was all throughout the night. I went to bed

with cold sweats and I’d wake up in the middle of the night and have to run to the bathroom. That lasted till maybe four or five in the morning.”

Zubka said it had been 5 hours since she ate before the grilled chicken, which led her to believe it was the chicken that made her sick. Enid Jennings, the Health Educator for the Student Health Center at UNR, said foodborne illnesses are often associated with the last meal that was eaten, known as the “last meal” bias. Nevertheless, Jennings said the last meal is not always the source of the illness, depending on the incubation period of what was contracted.

According to food inspection reports carried out by the Nevada State Health Division, the DC store is a clean facility, receiving 100 percents on both inspections in 2011 and 2012.

However, though the DC store received 100 percents in the last 2 years, Paul Cohen, the state food inspector that oversees UNR food establishments, inspected the facility during the summer when it was not in operation or serving food to students.

The Downunder Cafe scored well, with 96 percent in 2011 and 97 percent in 2012. Cohen said in the four years he’s been in inspecting the Downunder Cafe, for its large size, has been in good shape.

Melissa Peek, an epidemiologist for the Washoe County Health District, said since she has been with the health district in 2005, there has never been an outbreak related to the school cafeteria.

Cohen has never received a complaint regarding the Downunder Cafe or DC store, but that doesn’t mean it hasn’t happened.

Regardless of food inspection reports, there are students who enjoy the Downunder Cafe and the DC store.

Lindsey Markel, a student visiting from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, said she enjoys the Downunder Cafe and believes that certain foods normally make certain people gassy.

Even after her food poisoning experience with the DC store, Zubka continues to enjoy the chicken fingers and recommends the macaroni and cheese.

Tyler Collins, a sophomore at UNR, said he is fond of the Downunder Cafe because of the unlimited food - it fills him up for 6 hours at a time - and because the food tastes good. Though he enjoys the Downunder Cafe and DC store, Collins believes the food quality is not worth $7-9 per meal, and thinks there should be changes made to the Downunder Cafe .

“There should be healthier items for a more variety of people,” Collins said. “ because I know a lot of vegetarians who don’t eat anything. And they should have more of a variety on different nights, but otherwise, the DC is the shit.”

Sagebrush staff decides to call it quits

Volume 120 No.27 April 21, 2014 Operating at the zenith of their craft, the staff of the most prominent weekly collegiate newspaper in North America has decided to walk away from the business while they are still on top.

Citing massive amounts of reader interest, pay increases and unparalleled recognition, the staff of The Nevada Sagebrush have collectively decided it would be best to let someone else learn in their absence. Working under deadlines and producing content on a weekly basis, in addition to full course loads and their own social lives, The Sagebrush staff came to the conclusion that if they could do this, then they could do anything.

As mentioned before, reader interest has been at an all-time high. Numerous sources on campus have described the

work of The Nevada Sagebrush in recent months as “all right”, “competent” and above all else, “OK.” Many readers have also mentioned how “exclusive” the paper is due to the high amount of copies that are usually left out on newsstands. This is so other members of the high society on campus will be able to read it over and over to appreciate the intelligence of the writing.

With the economy reaching a moderate peak since the Great Recession of the late 2000s, Sagebrush staffers have reported engaging in inordinate amounts of excess. À la the “Wolf of Wall Street,” editor-in-chief Chris Boline has spent most of his evenings with his dog Waffles listening to his brandnew cassette player. Arts and entertainment editor Tyler Hersko has started to throw lavish parties at his off-campus apartment in the vein of another Di-

Caprio film, “The Great Gatsby.” Finally, copy editor Abby Feenstra has reported that her “milkshake” does indeed “bring all the boys to the yard.”

The recognition for the work the staff does has also peaked throughout the school year. From numerous members of Greek life and the Nevada athletic department cooperating on stories to receiving only positive remarks from campus secret society Coffin & Keys, the work of The Sagebrush has become akin to that of men and women twice their age. Some have said in recent years that the work of The Nevada Sagebrush is the perfect secret society in the sense that their work is published all over campus, but only a select few read it.

There is also a concern on staff that since The Nevada Sagebrush is on such an upswing, they would like to keep

their anonymity intact since staff members are currently able to walk throughout campus without being noticed. The fact that their names and faces are literally all over campus has somehow left staff members in an awkward “floatzone” where they can do whatever they please as the gatekeepers of campus history.

The despair from the community has almost been immediate. Patchy the raccoon, a candidate for the city of Reno mayoral race, who was recently profiled in the Reno News & Review, had this to say: “This was an incredible surprise to me and a very disheartening one as well,” Patchy said. “How am I ever going to make my nest without the copious amounts of newspaper that are simply left out?”

Many other members of the campus

community have already felt the impact of The Sagebrush’s collective decision to leave campus news in the hands of whoever wants to take up their vacant mantle.

1968-69 were tumultuous years

Tim Countis Editor-in-Chief, 1968-69 Nixon was elected, the Vietnam War was raging, friends were getting drafted and killed, American cities were burning and campuses all over the country were seething with protests.

Not so, however, on the sleepy little campus of UNR. Back then Nevada was still a bedrock of dyed-in-the-wool conservatism. In 1968 George Wallace, the racist governor of Mississippi, ran for President on an inde-

pendent ticket, and Nevada was the only state he carried outside of the Deep South.

In those days UNR was still a shit kickin’ party school. Sororities, frat houses, alcohol and sports were the main activities.

Homecoming and Governor’s Day were the main events, and no one seemed to know or care what was happening in the outside world.

We set out to change all that.

The first thing we did was move the Sagebrush to an offset press, a huge leap forward from the old letterpress days of linotype machines and hefty lead galleys that had been around since the days of

Mark Twain.

Then we changed the content. Fraternity parties, sorority dances and football took a back seat to politics, drug use, rock ‘n roll, civil rights, the war in Asia, and issues that were consuming the country and campuses from California to New York.

We also broadened our coverage to the community at large, exposing, among other things, police brutality and abuses of power. At one rock concert in Wingfield Park we took photos of cops beating up long-hairs, and splashed those pics above the fold on the front page. We did stories

Since 30 years ago...

Bryan Allison Editor-in-Chief, 1988-89 It’s been 30 years since I served as editor of the Sagebrush, and I remain extremely proud of the paper my staff and I published. We worked to expand our reporting to cover the entire campus, not just the usual suspects in ASUN and athletics. We regularly published 24- and 32-page newspapers twice a week. We even delivered newspapers to the Nevada Legislature in Carson City, since it was in session that year.

But frequently, when a friend or relative reflects back on my tenure, none of that comes up. It’s all about the Dick Donnelly ad.

The seed for the ad was planted in the fall, when one of our photographers returned from covering the Boise State-Nevada football game, which was in Idaho that year. He stormed in, clutching a copy of a BSU game day program in one hand, a Nevada program in the other. “Look at this bullshit!”

Each program carried a full-page ad for Donnelly’s car dealerships, one in Boise and one in Reno. He was one of the largest boosters for both athletic departments, and the ad featured a photo of Dick and his wife Susan standing in front of a car, superimposed in front of an image from each campus and declaring their support for tradition at each of the universities.

That wasn’t the issue. The problem was that the ads were identical, apart from the words “University of NevadaReno” and “Boise State University.”

Obviously, there was nothing wrong with a business located in both cities providing support to the schools. But it was the way they did it that felt disingenuous and twofaced, especially to outraged college students. So lazy. So … sneaky! We fumed, not sure what to do. Eventually the programs landed on someone’s desk in the disaster area that was the old Sagebrush offices in Jot Travis, forgotten under piles of used fast-food containers and other junk.

Fast forward to spring and the end of the semester. In those days, we published an annual satirical issue called Playbrush in which we made extremely questionable and often regrettable jokes about the administration, fellow students, anyone we could target. But that year, our hearts weren’t in it, and we didn’t feel up to producing a full issue.

I don’t know who remembered the Donnelly ads, but we quickly decided the best way to fill a half-page space in the final issue was an ad mocking the car dealer. I will take full credit for spearheading the design and most (if not all) of the language, including calling Donnelly “a two-faced dork” and the notso-subtle final line: “Thanks a bunch for the ‘support,’ Dick.”

During my years at the Sagebrush, I received the occasional outraged call or letter, but nothing prepared me for what happened when the ad hit the campus. Thenathletic director Pharbus Harper called me, absolutely apoplectic, assuring me I would be expelled. Coach Chris Ault also screamed into my ear, delivering the kind of dressing-down I imagine his

football players would wearily recognize. Such language, coach! I even received a letter from President Joe Crowley which was more muted, expressing his disappointment in my judgment. In a way, that one was the worst, the equivalent of a parent just shaking their head and walking away, leaving you to soak in your own shame.

The Donnellys were furious. They yanked the fleet of loaner cars the dealership provided to the athletic department and administration. There was talk that their funding would also vanish.

My parents and other relatives who lived in Reno, who rarely weighed in on what we published, heard about the ruckus and either chuckled in disbelief or gave me the Crowley treatment.

Eventually, it all blew over and was marked up to the poor judgment of student journalists. The cars were returned and the funding remained. But I still receive the occasional comment to this day.

Would I do it again? Today I work in marketing and I have a much better understanding of the nature of sponsorship. I’m also older and much more forgiving. The language wasn’t exactly artful, and the tone was snide and probably over the top.

But I stand by my decision and our shared outrage. It was a really lazy way to express your support for two rival schools. I dug out my May 9, 1989 issue of the Sagebrush to look at that old ad while I was writing this piece and it still makes me mad.

You know what? Screw Boise and its stupid blue field.

I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

A run in the UNR

Administration Lauren Belaustegui Ohlin, Editor-in-Chief , 1983-84 After several months of investigation three of our sharpest Sagebrush writers,

Joe Lowell, Mark Mansmith, and Scott Shelly uncovered that the university administration was misusing scholarship funds. Among the misuse of funds was $44,000 siphoned into the Board of Regents account and another $11,000 paid to scholarship office classified staff.

We ran a few stories between April and May of 1984. After the first story broke in early April, then-President Crowley spotted me walking across The Quad and ran after me. “Lauren,” he

on Native Americans, went toe to toe with crooked politicians, and routinely bashed Nixon on the editorial page.

Needless to say, this didn’t go over too well with the established order. (Shortly after that rock concert, Reno cops ransacked our offices, terrorizing my secretary and busting typewriters.) I was called on the carpet numerous times by the Dean of Students and the Dean of Men. Two state senators took to the floor to demand my resignation, the Pub Board tried to fire me, and the Reno Evening Gazette published a front page editorial demanding that I be sacked. When the head of the

journalism department threatened to give me the boot, I switched to political science.

But through it all we managed to hang on until the end of the year. That year the Sagebrush garnered three awards for excellence from the Associated Collegiate Press Association, the first time the ‘Brush had ever won a national award.

Upon graduation I found myself blacklisted from employment by the local press, so I packed my bags and left Reno to travel the world. But that’s another story.

Looking back I have only one regret. I wish I could do it all over again.

Joe Crowley’s advice Dan Hinxman Editor-in-Chief, 1990-91 Having been taught by Jake Highton about the intrinsic duty of newspapering, I entered my year asSagebrush editor with a high-and-mighty principle – that of fist shaker.

It was 1990-91, and the only thing I knew about university President Joe Crowley was that his nicknamewas “Joe Chromedome” and that he couldn’t really be as suave and easily likeable as he appeared to be in public appearances and news bites, could he?

Several weeks into the academic year and still having not met Crowley, I wrote an editorial about what we on the Sagebrush editorial board believed was an unbalanced approach to academics – putting money before education, or something like that. I wrote, and I’m paraphrasing here, that Crowley had said he wanted to run the university as if it were a business – I was sure I had seen that somewhere – and how education would suffer with that philosophy.

Within a week or two, Crowley’s secretary called the Sagebrush to schedule a meeting with me and the other editors. I felt pretty big-time. I had no idea

what was coming.

Probably 5-6 of us sat around Crowley’s big office table, and he – in his old-fashioned, low-key, well-mannered, Iowa-country-boy charm – let it be known that I should check my facts before writing stories to be published. It was a small part of the meeting – mostly it was a meet-and-greet – but it’s the part that still resonates with me.

I walked out of there with a new appreciation for the president for his patriarchal way.

After my time at the Sagebrush, my friendship with Joe – he never wanted people to call him Mr. Crowley or President Crowley – grew and grew. I cherished our occasional meetings for coffee at “The Joe,” and I ached when he died nearly a year ago.An aside, and this is my favorite story about Joe, in 2003, after he had retired at UNR, he was serving as interim president at San Jose State. I ran into him in the Mackay Stadium press box for the SJSU-Nevada football game. He was wearing a blue blazer – the color of both teams – but his tie was unmistakably SJSU blue and gold.

I said something like, there are going to be a lot of angry Wolf Pack fans when they see that tie! He leaned over and whispered, “I’m wearing my Wolf Pack boxer shorts.”

Timing is everything Buddy Frank, Editor-in-Chief, 1972-73 In the very early 1970’s Sagebrush was a bit more of an alternative newspaper than it is today.

While supported by the journalism department, our strong stands against the Vietnam War, for peaceful protests, against Nixon’s presidential bid and a relaxed position on recreational drug use were definitely not the department positions, nor the University’s. You must remember that this was the era where USF and Cal Berkeley were sites of massive protests and generated strong pushbacks against student activism from most of the conservative politicians running both California and Nevada.

With that as background, the leading commercial alternate newspaper in the country then was the “Berkley Barb” published in the Bay Area. It was read nationwide and pretty much encapsulated the hippy and anti-war movements of the late 60’s and early 70’s. The paper had two sections. The first section was excellent with a strong group of writers covering material from Washington politics to great reviews of the music scene. The second section was completely different. It was composed almost entirely of personal (sex) classifieds, along with display ads for strip clubs, outcall massage service, sex toys and the like. Most everyone I knew read Section One cover-to-cover and used Section Two to line the bottom of the garbage can.

Then the “Barb” ran an editorial noting that the “porno ads” in Section Two were the main funding source for their entire publication. They were quite amused when their readership surveys found that most “conservatives,” who detested the Barb’s editorial content, enthusiastically pursued Section Two. What had prompted this editorial was one advertisement for a product called “Auto Suck.”

I looked up at him and said, “Well, are they true?” and he replied, “Yes, but I can explain.” To that, I told him we were going to keep printing the stories.

The result of our reporting and editorials ended with the UNR administration coming up with a better policy to track and administer scholarship funds with accountability mechanisms put into place.

plied, this device, which could be powered from a car cigarette-lighter jack, would provide “hours of driving or parking pleasure.” The “Berkeley Barb” thought this was the ultimate low-point, even for Section Two. But, they were also taken by the irony that their most-ardent critics were the most-probable consumers of these products. I, and most of the ‘Brush staff, loved it.

The rest of this story is all about timing; bad timing.

The very-next day after the “Barb” editorial, we received an ad placement request for the aforementioned “Auto Suck” device. It was a decent size ad, and they included an advance payment. Our first reaction was laughter. But then we (or more correctly me and just one or two other staffers who names I’ll withhold to protect their reputations), decided we’d run the ad.

But with the commitment that we’d reprint the Berkeley Barb editorial in the next issue to show this blatant hypocrisy between conservatives and liberal students. Boy, was that a mistake.

The night before the issue with the ad was released, our team had made a record haul of awards at the Nevada State Press Association banquet (Best Local Small Newspaper, Best Photo and a few others). The next afternoon, the late-Nevada State Senator Coe Swobe requested that we send 100 copies of the paper to his Carson City office. We assumed he wanted to brag about our awards.

Here’s where more bad timing comes in. Sen. Swobe was one of those holding hearings on the University budget that week.

Calls came flooding in from Carson City to the campus, most of them outraged. Folks who’d never even heard of, or read, Sagebrush were outraged by “Auto Suck.” They did not want Nevada students exposed to this paper and, preferably, someone shot. In a hastily called meeting with university president N. Edd Miller and the ASUN student

Years later, when my children were in grade school, I heard a knock on my door. To my surprise, Joe Crowley was standing there. He looked at me. I looked at him. Then Joe said, “Lauren?”, and I said, “President Crowley?” He asked if his granddaughter, Gracie, was there. Come to find out, my son, Hugh, and Gracie were in the same grade together and had become fast friends.

After a couple awkward moments, we both laughed and talked about how it

That would be celebrated since the “liberal California” schools were not taking any decisive action against their rebellious students. The student body president wanted to resist and fight back against the legislature, but Dr. Miller and I convinced him to go along for the good of the University. He went along, but he insisted that I be reinstated the minute the budget was finalized.

The legislature loved it. In fact, they invited the student body president to Carson City where he received a standing ovation for his decisive action in getting rid of this indecent editor. The budget was successfully approved.

And, suddenly that commitment for re-instatement vanished.

A week later ASUN had called a special evening hearing to consider making my suspension permanent. They even had their attorney present to make sure they did everything proper. I’ll never forget walking from the “Brush” offices in the basement of the old Library (now the Jones Center) to the hearing which was in the Jot Travis building. It would be ASUN and their attorney aligned against me. And I was alone. My staff (smartly) were in hiding. Dr. Miller (who’d been very supportive) had no standing with student government. Again, I felt very alone.

As I approached the hearing, I noticed a lot of lights and quite a crowd. It seems I wasn’t alone at all. Unbeknownst to me, this event had attracted considerable news coverage. Most national news outlets used the tag line, “In a state where gambling and prostitution are legal, they’re trying to oust a student editor for running an ad.” To my complete surprise, there were also multiple attorneys there to represent me.

was indeed a small world. As it turned out, four of Joe’s grandchildren became good friends with my two sons. For years, the Crowley’s had the little Ohlin boys running through their house when their grandchildren visited and I had the Crowley grandchildren at my house.

During those years, when Joe would walk around the block with his dog, we always shared a few kind words and laughs and discussed the welfare of our little off springs.

Senate Bill would make newspaper independent

The Nevada Sagebrush may become independent of the student government if the senate approves a resolution Wednesday.

The legislation, which student Sen. Taylor Anderson worked on over winter break, will allow the newspaper to control its own budget and editor selection.

“It’s been a long time coming,” said Brian Duggan, editor in chief of the newspaper. “There’s been a lot of talk about Sagebrush independence for

years.”

The Sagebrush’s budget will depend on advertising revenue the newspaper makes throughout the year, Duggan said. Advertising sales will be done through the Associated Students of the University of Nevada’s advertising department. The editor in chief will control the budget, and the ASUN senate will no longer approve changes to the budget.

Also, selection of the newspaper’s editor in chief each year will be done by the staff, Duggan said. Previously, student

senators that sat on ASUN’s publication board would choose the new editor each May. The staff plans to keep the process as public as possible, Duggan said. Anyone who wants to run for the position will be able to apply.

Duggan said the staff will create more detailed for how the selection will work.

Anderson said he worked with Duggan and Speaker of the Senate Greg Green on the bill over break while the ASUN interim committee was working on creating the publications board,

UNR students say, “I STAND for consent”

By Jennifer Marbley Appeared in Vol. CXIV Issue 17, 2008 More than 200 University of Nevada, Reno students attended the I STAND for Consent campaign’s launch event on Monday, Oct. 20 to spark a dialogue on how to end sexual assault on campus. The event drew students, faculty and U.S. Senator for Nevada Dean Heller, to discuss how UNR and the Reno community can take action.

Students lined up to sign the I STAND for Consent pledge in the Joe Crowley Student Union Milt Glick Ballroom. The pledge, found on the university’s Facebook page, allows students to commit to creating a safe community by promoting awareness of sexual violence and intervening when necessary.

Junior Elayna Winter heard about the campaign through advertisements on campus. Winter said that she agreed with the campaign’s mission and believes that topic of consent is an important one for college students.

“I am verbally taking [the pledge] and will follow through action-wise,” Winter said. “I believe highly that campaigns like this are important because it brings more awareness to our students and gets them more involved.”

The I STAND campaign is an ongoing program that seeks to engage

the UNR community in a dialogue about sexual consent on campus and create steps in lowering the high statistics of sexual assault and rape.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in five women and one in 71 men will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime.

The I STAND campaign fights to reduce these instances of assault.

Some of the speakers included Alison Gaulden, a professor at the Reynolds School of Journalism, Heller and Jo Harvey, program specialist for the Office of Student Conduct.

Harvey is an organizer for the I STAND launch event and leaders Green Dot trainings that focus on bystander intervention where sexual violence might take place.

Harvey offered Green Dot training as one solution to lowering rates of assault on campus. She encouraged all students to stand against harmful behavior that includes bullying and hazing in addition to sexual violence.

“I hoped Monday night served as the beginning of more honest and compassionate conversations concerning the issue and that students will be inspired to seek more information and training,” Harvey said. “I have been amazed at the positive response from our students and their eagerness to get involved.”

There are other steps being made other than bystander intervention training in an attempt to combat assault on campus. Heller spoke at the

event about ending sexual assault on college campuses through the promotion of new legislation.

In an interview with KRNV News 4 on Monday, Heller said that he was unsettled by the fact that 20 percent of women are sexually assaulted during their college years. This concern led the senator to combat sexual assault with the Campus Accountability and Safety Act, a piece of legislation that aims to ensure that students have adequate resources to address sexual violence.

Sen. Heller acknowledged the university’s I STAND campaign as a step to bring attention to this issue.

“I applaud the university and its students for taking the initiative to launch I STAND to bring awareness and action to this topic,” Heller said in the interview. “It is my goal that students, universities and communities throughout the country will follow suit and make it a priority to end sexual assault.”

The Associated Students of the University of Nevada Sen. Owen Stewart was one of several students who attended the event. Stewart worked with organizers to help students sign the I STAND pledge.

“There are things that we can all do on an individual level and on a community level to help prevent it,” Stewart said. “You can stand for consent. You can let other people know that you’re there with them and you cannot be a bystander anymore.”

Anderson said he feels the bill gives the editor more control over the paper and takes ASUN out of the picture.

“It takes out the conflict of interest with the government’s involvement with the newspaper,” Anderson said.

Amy Koeckes, publications adviser, said it’s the first step for the Sagebrush to operate as an independent newspaper without any control from within the university.

“For now, there’s still an entire business side with the Sagebrush will still work with the advertising department,” said Koeckes, who has worked with the publication since 2001. “It’s going to take 20 to 30 years and lots of little steps to get to a point where it doesn’t have to deal with the university at all.”

Green said ASUN’s new constitution allowed for the Sagebrush to become independent because it wasn’t allowed in the bill.

“I’m glad to see this finally come to fruition,” he said.

The Diversity Problem and what is being done to fix it

By Madeline Purdue and Karolina Rivas Appeared in Vol. 124 Dec. 12, 2017 When the country watched as white supremacists marched in Charlottesville, no one could predict the implications it would have immediately and subsequently on the University of Nevada, Reno, campus. The events that occurred over the course of this semester spotlighted and ignited conversations on an issue many people face at the university — diversity.

Since the beginning of the semester, students and faculty have called for change from the administration on how they handle issues of diversity. For some, what the university has done to address the issues is enough, but others believe more can be done to support the diverse university population. In this report, The Nevada Sagebrush looks at the events spanning the semester, what the university has done in response — both immediately and over time — and what the university community wants to see done going forward.

WHAT HAPPENED The fall semester kicked off with a protest — two, actually.

The first happened on Friday, Aug. 11, at the University of Virginia. Members of white supremacist groups gathered to protest the removal of a Confederate statue from the campus. News and photos of the protest quickly went viral, which led to the identification of one of the partici-

pants as UNR student Peter Cvjetanovic — creating national attention for the university.

In the days following Charlottesville, UNR President Marc Johnson gave a news conference and sent out an email announcing that Cvjetanovic could not be expelled from the university or fired from his on-campus job — from which he would later resign. Members of the community organized a counter-protest put on by the Reno-Sparks chapter of Black Lives Matter on Sunday, Aug. 27.

More than 1,000 people gathered and marched downtown against the hateful acts seen in Charlottesville.

The ASUN Senate also held a special meeting for university members to speak about their thoughts and feelings on the Charlottesville protest and the university’s decision to keep Cvjetanovic on campus. They responded with creating the “I am the Real Nevada” T-shirt campaign. They ordered 2,000 shirts to hand out to students during the festivities that come with the beginning of the semester.

Three days after the Black Lives Matter march, the former Assistant to the Director of the Latino Research Center, Iris West, resigned from the university with a four-page letter detailing issues of diversity at UNR.

Artists get to Drag Queen Boxing event the heart of art raises eyebrows, awareness

Medical images are often met with anxiety and dread. Artists Karen Rips and Paula Chung raise the question: why are we afraid of our own anatomies?

“A View Within” features artistic interpretations of medical images. The exhibit is currently being shown at the Sierra Arts Foundation.

“I think that people miss the beauty of the body and only see medical imagery as bad news,” Chung said. “The body is really a magnificent machine and has a lot for us to appreciate. It talks across cultures, societies, often genders and speaks to everyone in a personal way.”

“A View Within” has been 7 years in the making. The pieces come from an array of MRIs, CAT scans and X-rays. The images originate from personal connections, friends of friends, people they have met or even from the internet. In total, they have completed almost 200 pieces.

Rips was originally a neonatal nurse, and although she did not use any images from her job, it did encourage an “appreciation of the body itself.”

“You look at an X-Ray or an MRI, you don’t know if that person is male, female, black, white, young, old or what that person’s story is,” Rips said. “We want you to look at that image and appreciate what the body is and how it functions and leave out all the extraneous stuff.”

Some of the medical images used in “A View Within” actually came from Rips’ daughter as she was trying to get pregnant.

“I was invited along to her infertility session and got the images from the doctors,” Rips said. “They were very generous in giving me those images. Then, throughout her pregnancy…she had frequent ultrasounds which

she gave me. We were lucky to have a personal connection with those images.”

Each artist has her favorite piece. Chung’s is the visualization of a young teenager that had a stroke and survived. Rips’s is one displaying Alzheimer’s. “[It] was inspired by my father going through the early stages of Alzheimer’s right before he died,” Rips said. “The personal ones are our favorites [because] we have a connection with them.”

All of the artwork in the gallery is made out of fiber and stitch.

“Fiber is so accessible,” Chung said. “People know it, they wear it, they have it around their bodies, they sleep within it. It’s something that people relate to and it’s something that we’ve always worked with and it’s very versatile.

It’s far more versatile than other mediums because you can paint on fiber, you can stitch it, you can manipulate it, you can dye it, you can tear it, you can do almost anything to it.”

Their artistic influences include Agnes Martin and Egon Schiele.

Chung and Rips have been showing “A View Within” throughout the country as an ongoing project. They have presented in Houston, Pennsylvania and Florida. All over, they have received praise and had positive interactions with patrons.

“It’s really amazing when people come up to us to talk about their situation or how the image has moved them, it’s really fulfilling,” Chung said. “Some people come up with tears in their eyes.”

In 2018 they look to move up the West Coast.

“We’ve branched out more into body processes,” Rips said. “We’re doing a series on Parkinson’s, we’re doing a series on multiple sclerosis. We’re doing more disease processes. We don’t see this ending anytime soon. We’re just plugging along.”

Juliana Bledsoe/Nevada Sagebrush

By Juliana Bledsoe Oct. 15, 2013 When you think about boxing, the first images that come to mind are probably not of heels, wigs and lipstick. When you think of drag queens, envisioning them in a violent activity that might mess up their looks is equally unlikely.

Nonetheless, Saturday’s Drag Queen Boxing event at The Alley in Sparks was a huge success. It might have been the first time in the history of boxing that someone said, “No offense, but that looks kind of gay,” and no one was offended.

The event drew an estimated 200 people and completely sold out before the fights even started, forcing onlookers to attempt to steal glimpses of the show from outside.

“We weren’t expecting the ring to be so big,” said Meredith Tanzer, vice president of the board for Build Our Center, the organization that threw the event. The ring filled up much of the floor space, causing the venue to reach capacity quickly.

The air was thick with energy and hairspray as contenders backstage adjusted the bra straps and corsets tethering their faux breasts. They sipped cocktails through straws in an effort to keep lipstick in place and fanned each other as the rumble of the crowd grew steadily outside the back room. With the stage set, the crowd fidgeted anxiously in the sweaty Sparks hole-in-thewall.

“Do you Dangle?”: The real story behind Reno 911!

The University of Nevada, Reno’s Homecoming Parade welcomed Reno’s most incompetent sheriff as grand marshall this year.

Thomas Lennon plays hotpants wearing Lt. Jim Dangle on Comedy Central’s show “Reno 911!” Dangle is the leader of the fictional Reno Sheriff’s Department, overseeing seven of the most bungling cops on TV. Lennon described the show as not about making fun of Reno, but the cops themselves.

In his favorite skit, the cops try to get a weasel out of a wall and end up shooting on their own members. The weasel never did get caught.

“Reno 911!” originated when Lennon and other cast members were shooting footage on location for another skit and realized that Reno, strangely enough, looked similar to Los Angeles.

Robin Holabird, deputy director of the Nevada Film Office, said the cast members had always planned to shoot a “Cops” spoof in L.A., but set the show in Reno after that similarity was noticed.

“The purpose was not to spoof Reno, but to spoof ‘Cops’ and shows like that,” Holabird said. “It could have been ‘Albuquerque 911!’”

Since that original pilot was shot in 2000, “Reno 911!” has had four seasons and a movie about the sheriffs’ mishaps.

Bringing Lennon for homecoming was the brainchild of Brita Muller, university weeks chair for the Associated Students of the University of Nevada.

She had heard a song Lennon wrote in the persona of Dangle rapping about his civic pride for Reno. Part of the chorus is “Keepin’ it alive in the 775,” which ended up becoming the homecoming theme.

“I just thought that it’d be cool to have someone everyone knows of,” Muller said. “It’s solely a Reno thing. For any other city, it wouldn’t matter.”

Muller said that the beginning of the process to get Dangle to Reno was difficult, but as soon as Lennon was reached, it was easy.

“He was really cool about it,” she said.

Lennon wore his trademark short shorts at the student tailgate Saturday, when the high temperature was 55 degrees.

Kyle Kimber, a 21-year-old music major, said when he first saw Lennon dressed up as Dangle, he couldn’t help shouting out, “Daaaaangle.”

“I was just in shock because I didn’t expect him to be there,” Kyle Kimber said. “We were just like, ‘Oh my God, it’s Dangle.’

He came over and talked to us and said it was cold as hell.”

Muller said she hasn’t heard any negative feedback about a fictitious cop leading homecoming.

“All the students and everyone thought it was really funny,” she said.

Holabird said when she used to travel throughout the United States and Europe for work, people would ask her about “Bonanza”. Now it’s “Reno 911!”.

“When I’m out of state, people ask about it,” she said.

“Many, many people have heard of ‘Reno 911!’ It’s a door opener.”

Holabird said that having a city known for its fake cops has never been a bad thing.

“They don’t seem to think our officers wear shorts quite like Lt. Dangle’s,” she said.

Nor do people believe that there are palm trees in Reno, like there are on the show.

“They spell it right and pronounce ‘Nevada’ right, so we like them,” she said. “They get the name out.”

The Nevada Sagebrush: Why are you coming to Reno to celebrate Homecoming with us?

Thomas Lennon: I guess it mostly traces back to I wrote

that song called “Proud of Reno.” It’s Lt. Dangle singing about civic pride and some of the positive things about Reno.

NS: Are you going to play it?

TL: It’s kinda hard to play. It’s like a rap.

NS: Are you going to wear the Dangle shorts?

TL: You got to be kidding me.

How on earth would Dangle — of course! It’s in the forties there right?

NS: Yeah, it is. It might snow during the game.

TL: Right, here’s the thing: it’s always horrible in the shorts.

Although I was also in Chicago in January in the shorts.

NS: Do you have winter shorts and summer shorts?

TL: (Laughs.) I don’t. There was a period where once in a while it would get so cold when we would shoot that I would wear pantyhose, but it gives me a look for of like a Hooters girl.

It’s also weird because then I look down at my own legs and think, ‘Boy those look kinda good.’ It sort of am thinking of myself at a Hooters. It’s disturbing and confusing.

NS: Going back to the shorts: do they chafe?

TL: The shorts are the more horrible than you could possibly imagine. Like, I though the shorts were a very funny idea. You have to understand, we shot the pilot for ‘Reno 911’ in the year 2000. It was basically right around the Y2K scare.

We’re nosing up on a decade in them.

NS: Do you get new ones every season?

TL: I do. I’ve been through probably several dozen sets.

NS: And they all suck?

TL: Uh, yeah. They’re really horrible. You know, there’s an official Lt. Dangle Halloween costume you can buy? Those shorts, by comparison? Are huge! But they’re made out of vinyl.

NS: So, boxers or briefs?

As the first boxer, self-dubbed Mirage, entered the ring, her heels pressed dangerously into the bounce-house rubber, leading the announcer to inquire whether they would be a threat for her opponent or more of a detriment to the stage itself.

Her competitor, Reba Ryan, sported a pink camouflage mini-dress, though her bulging biceps and tattoos made her a tough and intimidating match.

The crowd was a diverse mix of gay, straight, drag-queen and otherwise, but when the fights started, every face was turned to the ring. No one was disappointed as the elaborately clad fighters took to swinging at one another’s made-up faces.

“Can Mirage catch up from behind,” announcer Ian Sorensen asked, as Mirage began to falter, “or will Rena take her from behind?” The audience erupted in laughter.

Lola Von Tess, also the people’s choice winner for the Mr. and Mrs. Dragalicious competition thrown earlier this year, took home the prize of the evening: a glittering pink champion belt complete with rhinestones.

The mood was lighthearted as the judges ate homemade cupcakes over the mics, and scantily-clad ring girls provided by the Wild Orchid and the Spice House squeezed through the crowd, wielding their giant signs to signify each round. Nonetheless, the philanthropic cause behind the fights was very serious.

was a fundraiser for Build Our Center, a non-profit organization that aims to open a safe, anonymous community center for members of the gay community.

“We need a space, and we need it now,’ said Eyemiss Mai Hungcock after her bout.

Event organizer Phillip Brown explained in a recent interview with Channel 2 News that many young people end up getting kicked out of their homes when they come out as being gay, and this is just one of the many reasons the LGBT community needs a center. Build Our Center also works to provide support, advocacy and education to members of the LGBT community and their allies.

“The most exciting thing was the number of allies that came out,” Tanzer said. “So many of the people that can help move us forward are allies.”

The Alley, which provided the venue for the event and has worked with Build Our Center before, is another ally in this cause.

“They have been really good to our community and have made donations in the past,” Tanzer said. “They are very open and queer friendly. They believe in what we are doing, and what gays offer the community.”

Tanzer was also a judge for the annual Queer Student Union drag show hosted at the Joe Crowley Student Union the night before.

“We would love to see more college students at these events,” Tanzer said. “We as a community want more college kids involved: gay, straight, whatever.”

Feminism is not just Since when are the homeless not people too? for females

f it is true that the strength of a society should be measured by how it treats its most vulnerable members, it is becoming increasingly clear that Nevada is shamefully weak.

On Oct. 26, a homeless encampment set up under the Wells Bridge near Sixth Street was shut down by the Reno Police Department, and its residents were evicted. Before that, Nevada settled a $400,000 lawsuit with San Francisco over the Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital’s state-sanctioned practice of busing its patients to other cities, without enough medication or any resources waiting for them once they stepped off the Greyhound.

These instances paint a grim picture of how our state and city treat the most helpless among us, favoring image and convenience over respect for humanity.

On the day the homeless encampment was evicted, the local nonprofit group Food Not Bombs Reno arrived to “provide support and protection” to the homeless, according to a post by the group on its Facebook page. What they encountered while observing the evacuation is disturbing to say the least.

They witnessed “many police officers … degrading [a mentally-ill woman] and telling her she needed to leave by 7 [a.m.] with the rest of the encampment. We saw three officers gang up on her, making fun of her, humiliating her, which in turn made her cry hysterically.”

These officers expressed no remorse for their actions, according to FNB, and one stated that he did not care where the evicted residents went, and added “I can suggest is that you go somewhere we can’t see you. Like, you know, out of sight and out of mind.”

That statement acutely sums up the city’s attitude toward the homeless population: They need to stay out of sight and out of mind.

This attitude has been echoed by prominent residents — residents who could use their influence to lobby for legislative action that helps relieve homelessness, but instead favor further marginalizing the homeless population for the sake of the city’s image.

In an Oct. 2 interview with the Reno GazetteJournal, CEO of the Eldorado Casino, Cindy Carano, expressed a desire to address the problem of homelessness downtown, but not to provide better housing for those who spend their lives on the city sidewalks.

“With all these new people coming to town (for Tesla and Switch), it’s a great opportunity to turn these motels into apartments and upgrade them in order to create a better atmosphere,” Carano said. “ … it’s an opportunity for investment. Once you make it beautiful, the lower end will move out or away.”

Much like Rawson-Neal’s solution to alleviating the burden of too many patients was to ship them away to become someone else’s problem, Carano’s solution to revitalizing downtown is simply for “the lower end” to move away. Out of sight, out of mind.

If the city wants to improve its image, it should do so not by shoving those it deems undesirable by the wayside, but by focusing on providing opportunities to those without stable housing.

The problem of homelessness will not solve itself, and, as data has shown, it is projected to get worse if left unaddressed.

The National Alliance to End Homelessness found in its 2015 report “The State of Homelessness in America” that between 2013 and 2014, Nevada experienced a 25 percent increase in overall homelessness, with 10.56 in the state in 2014. By the state’s own admission, these numbers are likely to keep increasing. The Nevada Interagency Council on Homelessness states in the draft of its 2015 Strategic Plan that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s homeless projections for the state “anticipate that the number of chronically homeless individuals will increase by over 40 percent from 2013 to 2016.”

These startling figures should serve as a wakeup call for every Nevadan. Homelessness is undoubtedly a problem, and solving it will require addressing its causes, not merely attempting to hide its symptoms.

The City of Reno is taking steps toward addressing homelessness, but only time will tell if they will be enough to create a real impact. Last month, the city unveiled Reno Works, a pilot program funded with $110,000 of the city’s $10.9 million budget surplus The program that will hire 20 homeless individuals living in a shelter to work cleaning the Truckee River and provide them with job training and resources throughout the course of the 18-week program.

While this is a start, we must question if it is enough to really make a difference for the city’s

I

’m a feminist. I’m also a guy, in case the beard didn’t give me away.

I haven’t always been comfortable claiming this title. However, I’ve set that unease aside because I want to share why feminism is important to me and why I think feminism is a men’s movement too.

This October, an opinion column was written for CNN.com that hinted at feminism’s image problem. This isn’t news to me.

Man-hating, militant radicalism comes up a lot when I talk about feminism. I’m used to it. Friends have dismissed my entire pointof-view, claiming everyone is already equal or that feminism casts all men as the enemy.

I wish it were otherwise, but my friends aren’t wrong. During the 1960s and 1970s, some feminists argued that women were at odds with a common male oppressor.

At the most extreme, this idea led writers such as Sheila Jeffreys and Andrea Dworkin to claim heterosexual sex was oppressive and that women who chose not to abstain were enemy collaborators.

I don’t want to neglect the real progress these feminists achieved toward equality, but what can anyone say in response to being told their entire existence is characterized as oppressive to another? It isn’t the only message out there. Feminism can have more than one voice. While these ideas are still professed by feminists today, they do not represent a holistic view of the movement, past or present. In her book “Feminism is for Everybody,” bell hooks argues that while they didn’t receive the media attention man haters did, many feminists came to understand that it

was institutionalized sexism or patriarchy and not men that they were struggling against. In light of this understanding, men were seen as companions in the fight.

This is what John Brougher, the author of the article, wants us to consider. Like me, he’s a feminist.

He’s also the founder of MaleFeminist.com, and he contends that instead of shying away from the label, like many have done, both men and women should embrace it.

Why? For Brougher it’s all about equality. Gender discrepancies within job fields and political offices, the pay gap, slut shaming, the blame heaped on rape survivors, and everything that gets attributed to patriarchy are things Brougher thinks all genders need to come together to continue to combat.

I found it interesting that he never mentions men except to say we can help women. Yes, feminism is about equality.

Women are still confronted with sexism everyday. Men have privilege in this system, but at what cost do we gain this privilege?

Just as patriarchy holds that men are superior to women, it also contends that, as men, we must act in certain ways.

Patriarchy forces identities on everyone, and these identities cause damage. It has certainly caused a lot of conflict for me.

In particular, my sex life is under constant scrutiny because it does not conform to what it ought to be. I find it unsettling that I, as a straight man, am required to be the instigator. I don’t mind doing so, but it has taken a long time for me to feel comfortable with the practice, and it runs counter to so many things I felt were natural parts of my personality growing up. I want to be pursued in equal measure. I want to feel some

reciprocation that I don’t feel otherwise.

In the bedroom, I try to balance dominant and submissive impulses. Often, I don’t want to be aggressive. I can be, but just as I want to feel pursued, I want a woman to tell me what she wants. Sometimes, I want her to be the aggressive, domineering one.

The women I pursue are also under scrutiny. I imagine most people have a type. I like women with short hair, that are rail thin and whom have small breasts.

Since I’ve been able to express what I’m most attracted to, I’ve had to contend with criticisms of my masculinity and orientation.

Real men like long, flowing hair.

Real men like curves. Real men like big tits. Real women have these things and because of this I’ve been called both gay and a pedophile.

The conflict isn’t just a part of my sex life. I never played sports as a kid. I was soft spoken and quick to tears. I am and have been obsessed with fashion. I talk with my hands. I’m a chatterbox.

I have never been stoic. So many things that are or were a part of my identity have felt wrong, and I have suffered self-esteem issues because of this. I know I’m not alone.

I don’t want to say masculine behaviors aren’t worthwhile. I camp. I fish. I carry a big knife.

I’ve changed the oil and rotated the tires of my car every 5,000 miles since I was 16. Just as I recognize all the ways it doesn’t, I know where my identity conforms to the expectation. I don’t want only half of me to be recognized as worthwhile.

Feminism affords me the same opportunities it gives women in combating patriarchy. This is why I’m a feminist.

A new era begins for Nevada Sagebrush Staff Editorial Jan. 22, 2008

L

ast semester marked the end of an era for The Nevada Sagebrush.

We moves out of our Sierra Street offices and are now located on the third floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union, complete with new iMacs, upto-date software and a printer that works. It smells nice, it’s warm and it doesn’t have asbestos.

But a new office isn’t the only change going on at this newspaper. This Wednesday, the student senate will vote on a bill that will be the first step towards independence for The Nevada Sagebrush.

The Nevada Sagebrush Act of 2008 essentially ends student government oversight for this newspaper. This immediately

means those who work at the newspaper will select its editor at the end of the school year – not a publications board filled by student senators.

It also means the Associated Students of the University of Nevada will no longer publish The Nevada Sagebrush. We will still fall under ASUN’s accounting office, but now a student government official will no longer play a part in our financial matters.

Our budget is what we make in advertising, which has been the case in recent years with the exception of a number of requests to pay for major trips and technology. The most recent subsidy we received from ASUN was the funds to purchase the equipment for our new office, and we thank the student senate for approving the money to bring our newsroom to life.

But what does all of this ultimately mean? This bill, which

passed unanimously in interim committee is the first step toward true independence.

Any potential for conflict of interest in the editor selection process would be gone by having the newspaper choose its own leader.

The process for choosing an editor would remain a public one so that any students can apply.

The difference is now that the people asking the questions and making the selection would be the people who know this place the best.

It’s time for a change, especially as ASUN adapts to its new constitution and we adapt to a new office.

The Nevada Sagebrush has come a long way since it was moved into the Sierra Street offices more than a decade ago. It’s grown in budget, staff and quality. And now it’s time to take it to the next step.

UNR should accommodate gender differences

P

ropelling itself into the second decade of the 21st century, America has become even more of a beacon of change than it has ever been. President Obama continued his historic political run by becoming the first African American to be elected and re-elected as president.

Marijuana and gun laws faced multiple upheavals, and the former was even legalized in a handful of U.S. states. In sports, professional athletes Jason Collins and Michael Sam became the first openly gay participants in the four major U.S. sports (football, basketball, baseball and hockey). Collins recently became the first gay active player in the NBA and the latter entering the NFL Draft in April. As the country continues to change, university campuses like our own will continue to shift.

The University of Nevada, Reno has a student population that is almost representative of the state and the city of Reno. According to enrollment data as of spring 2013, there are 8,604 male students and 9,623 female students at the university. Forbes.com states that the university’s demographic information for the top three most represented races are Caucasians at nearly 67.8 percent, Hispanic/Latinos at 12.4 percent and

Asian/ Pacific Islander at 6.3 percent.

Although this information is useful, there is sparse data and information on LBGT students at the school. These students are becoming more known and accepted at the university and should be accommodated on campus just like any other knowledge seeking undergraduate or graduate.

While the information on these students is limited, they are a part of our campus like any other minority, and to restrict them would be a disservice to anyone who has fought for change in their lives.

UNR is in no way a hostile environment, but being able to immediately identify and cater to these students will help the university attract a wider array of different viewpoints and perspectives, which is what it needs to stay competitive in a rankings race with schools all across the globe.

The university has already started going in the right direction by showing the documentary “Trans” on campus and introducing gender-neutral “family” bathrooms, but the latter might be tiptoeing around the elephant in the room a little bit.

A good number of universities have already implemented gender-neutral bathrooms and residence hall floors. Although this is a step in the

Twelve Nevada Football players raise fists in protest during National Anthem

When the national anthem is played at Mackay Stadium, the football team isn’t on the field. This is the protocol for most programs across the country, but not at Purdue. The American flag was sprawled across one of the end zones and the anthem began to play with both teams on the sidelines.

Just like Nevada alums Colin Kaepernick and Brandon Marshall, 12 Nevada players protested during the anthem by raising a singular fist into the air – a salute used to symbolize unity or resistance that dates back to ancient Assyria. Also known as the “Black Power Salute,” the gesture was popularized by the Black Panther Party in the 1960s and was further immortalized by U.S. Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos after they raised their fists on the medal stand during the 1968 Olympics.

“To me, it’s a sign of unity and that’s what society needs most in this world because we have so much division and hate,” said sophomore safety Asauni Rufus. “It was just us showing that we are with everyone who is fighting against injustice. We want to do it in the most respectful way possible and that’s how we felt we could do it. We discussed that we didn’t want to take a knee because we didn’t want to offend

people, but we did want to show our support, so that’s what we came up with.”

Rufus later elaborated on why he chose to join the growing number of athletes around the country in demonstrations during the anthem.

“I believe that people in society should use their voices and what voice they have to speak out against injustices,” Rufus said. “I feel like playing football you have a little platform and we just wanted to do that. I respect people who do that. I’m not against the military or anything like that, but I’m with what’s right.”

L.J. Jackson, James Butler, Patrick Choudja, Dameon Baber, Travis Wilson, Jaxson Kincaide, Randy Uzoma, Cameron Turner, Hasaan Henderson and Malik Reed joined Rufus in the protest. Butler pointed to Rufus’ passion and the heightened coverage of the issues on social media.

“Just trying to do my part with these protests silently and trying to raise awareness,” Butler said. “Asauni is really big into what’s going on in the world and I just tried to pick his brain on what’s going on.

Asauni is real big on that and I have the utmost respect for Asauni. You look on social media and every other day somebody is getting brutally murdered. It’s easy to not really feel the pain but kind of feel the pain until it happens to you or somebody you care about.”

After laying down the team protocol of standing with helmets off, Nevada head coach Brian Polian let the players decide what they were going to do.

“Legally they have a right to do that and frankly I don’t want to get hung up on something like that,” Polian said after the game. “We’re seeing young people express themselves throughout the country and show social awareness. It was a 1 1/2-min-

ute thing and they have the right to do it and off we roll. I legally have to give them free reign. I’m in no position to tell them what they can and cannot do. I discussed with them what our protocol was, what I hope would happen, but in the end they have a right to express themselves and as long as they do that responsibly and respectfully, I’m OK with it.”

The players were grateful for Polian’s

approach to allow them the freedom to express their beliefs without the fear of repercussion.

“I just feel like that goes to coach [Polian] showing his character and that we’re individuals and not just football players for the University of Nevada, but we’re also individuals and we live in a society where we can voice our opinion,” Butler said.

Victory brings major ‘We have what we need to win here’ changes for fans, players

Eric Musselman’s 26-year coaching odyssey has stretched from Rapid City, South Dakota to Memphis, Tennessee to most recently Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The 50-year-old coach has seemingly done it all, almost.

National Basketball Association head coach? Check. NBA D-League head coach?

Check. Continental Basketball Association coach? Check. Venezuela national basketball coach? Check and check. National Collegiate Athletic Association assistant coach? Checkmate.

However, until Thursday, March 26, there was one item Musselman’s lengthy resume lacked: NCAA head coach.

That’s no longer the case after Musselman inked a five-year, two-million dollar deal to become the Wolf Pack’s 18th head coach.

The head coaching gig is Musselman’s 12th of his career, including a two-year stint as the Golden State Warriors head coach from 2002-2004 and the Sacramento Kings during 2006-2007.

Aside from his three seasons in the NBA, Musselman has posted a winning record each time as a head coach.

Nevada is a new animal, however. Musselman will be tasked with turning around a program on a shoestring budget (the league’s second-least) and a three-year streak of losing seasons. The excuses are there, but Musselman isn’t buying them.

“We have what we need to win here,” Musselman said. “I know with myself and my players, all we need is two buckets and 94 feet and we’re ready to rock and roll.”

During the head coaching search, Wolf Pack athletic director Doug Knuth had a baseline criteria for Nevada’s next head coach — a great recruiter, a coach that can develop players and one who can engage the community.

Musselman checks all three boxes, according to Knuth.

“When you look at what this basketball program needs to get us back to the top of the conference or back to postseason play, you talk about recruiting, you talk about player development and you talk about engagement and frankly, there is nobody with the skills and nobody with the ability and knowledge to get us there quicker and do it in the right way than Eric Musselman,”

Knuth said.

Recruiting might be Musselman’s biggest question mark. Musselman didn’t enter the college coaching realm until 2012, when he joined Arizona State for two seasons. A year ago, Musselman served as Louisiana State’s associate head coach.

Now, he’ll be pushed to recruit against the likes of San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher, New Mexico head coach Craig Neal (who actually played under Musselman in 1989 with the Rapid City Thrillers in the CBA), among others in arguably the top mid-major basketball conference. Not that Musselman minds the challenge.

“The Mountain West is a great conference and I think this a positive,” Musselman said.

“I don’t see that as a negative. Great players should want to play against great players.”

Musselman has two scholarships to hand out during the upcoming year. However, recruiting the current players on the team is a chief priority.

Transfers are common when a head coach is replaced and even when a player stays following a head coach swap, sometimes tension rises between the old regime’s players and the new ones.

Musselman was in the midst of that when he played collegiately at the University of San Diego. USD head coach Jim Brovelli recruited Musselman to the school, before Hank Egan replaced him after Musselman’s freshman campaign.

He’ll draw on that experience more than three decades later.

“What I learned as a player is we felt the first couple of weeks, ‘Are we Coach Egan’s guys because Coach Brovelli recruited us?’”

Musselman said. “We found out very quickly that if you buy in, it’s one big family. I have great sensitivity to the guys coach Carter recruited because I’ve been in there shoes.”

Musselman had a team meeting with Nevada players the morning of his introductory press conference. The team was in the gym practicing the following day.

For Musselman, who has coached players such as Metta World Peace, Gilbert Arenas, Jeremy Lin, among others, he’s excited about leaving a dent in the lives of young men.

“We’re not just coaching the next four years of their life, but hopefully I’ll have an impact on these young men as they become adults over the next 40 years and really that’s the most exciting part for me,” Musselman said.

Despite it being 1:30 a.m. Central time in St. Louis, 19-year-old University of Nevada, Reno marketing major Brad Rootz was wide awake.

The now-No.24 Wolf Pack was on the cusp of defeating then-No. 4 Boise State, and he wasn’t about to hold in his emotion.

Rootz, a die-hard Wolf Pack fan, teared up after Nevada’s loss to Hawaii earlier this season.

This was a chance for redemption.

After freshman kicker Anthony Martinez gave Nevada the win, the rest of the Rootz family, who were asleep, knew what had happened.

“We just went nuts,” said Rootz, who went home Thanksgiving. “I was screaming at the top of my lungs and woke everyone up.”

Nevada’s victory sent shockwaves across the college football world, shaking up bowl projections and the outlook for the Bowl Championship Series bowl games.

For the Wolf Pack, the win affected

For quarterback Colin Kaepernick, it was fitting that his final home game with Nevada was a victory against the seemingly-unbeatable Broncos.

It was at Boise State in 2007, that Kaepernick made his first start for the Wolf Pack, introducing himself to the college football world and posting 420 total yards and five touchdowns.

Yet it was in a losing effort. Each year since, the Wolf Pack has come up short against the Broncos, losing by two, seven and nine points.

Imn what was one of the biggest stages of his career last Friday, Kaepernick threw for 259 yards and rushed for 45 yards, scoring one passing and rushing touchdown.

“I started my career against Boise, so it’s good to end it this was,” the senior said.

marred the class’ legacy. Instead the win cemented it as one of the best in program history.

“This win puts a stamp on this program that says this team is ready to play football with any team in the country,” Kaepernick said.

AULT Ault was happy to see his senior class go out with a bang.

“What a great thrill for those seniors,” Ault said.

Last September, many called for head coach Chris Ault to be fired.

Despite coaching the Wolf Pack for 26 seasons, fans were growing impatient.

Ault needed a signature victory — a big win to silence his critics.

The Broncos, ranked No. 4 in the BCS standings, were a team Nevada hadn’t beaten since 1998. Boise State was Ault’s signature victory.

More than 1,000 fans traveled to Key Arena last week hoping to catch a piece of history.

The Nevada men’s basketball team delivered — twice.

Nevada staked its claim as this year’s Cinderella team and booked a ticket for St. Louis and the Sweet 16 by upsetting heavily-favored No. 2 seed Gonzaga 9172 on Saturday.

The win followed a historic first on Thursday, when the 10th-seeded Wolf Pack earned its first NCAA Tournament victory by overcoming a 16-point deficit to beat Michigan State 72-66 on Thursday.

“It’s a big win for the program, for the city and for us,” Nevada senior guard Garry Hill-Thomas said. “It’s a great feeling.”

tion since 1985, plays No. 3 Georgia Tech on Friday at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis in its quest to become the first No. 10 seed to reach the Elite Eight since Gonzaga did it in 1999.

Despite the presence of a largely proGonzaga crowd on hand to support the Spokane, Washington school, Nevada (25-8) dominated the Bulldogs (28-3), who entered tournament play ranked second in the nation in the Associated Press poll.

“We had no reason to have fear, to be timid out there,” junior forward Kevinn Pinkney said. “We went and attacked instead of being attacked.”

The Wolf Pack built a 20-point lead by exploiting the foul trouble of Gonzaga’s top low-post threat Ronny Turiaf, then weathered 15.6 points per game, was expected to provide the Bulldogs with a large chunk of their offense. Instead, the 6-foot-10 junior forward picked up his third foul with 11:05 left in the first half.

As Turiaf watched from the bench, Pinkney and freshman Nick Fazekas took advantage. The pair scored a combined 18 first-half points.

The Pack padded their lead by going 15 of 19 from the free throw line in the first half.

With Nevada leading 47-32 at halftime, junior Kirk Snyder said he and his teammates knew Gonzaga would make a run in the second half.

“We knew they would come out and play hard,” Snyder said. “We just wanted to sustain it, take the blow. We waited, waited and then started making plays.”

A pair of Blake Stepp free throws pulled Gonzaga within eight with 11 minutes, 41 seconds left. But that’s as close as the Bulldogs would get.

One highly controversial libel suit involved Senator Paul Laxalt, R-Nevada, and investigative reports in The Sacramento Bee about finances at the Laxalt-owned Ormsby House hotel in Carson City, Nevada’s capital. The story gained national prominence because of Laxalt’s status as close friend to President Reagan and the possibility of Laxalt himself becoming a presidential candidate.

Laxalt challenged the story as defamatory and libelous. McCulloch stood behind it, declaring at a l983 journalism forum in Reno: “It certainly would not have been published had we not been utterly confident that everything was factual and, in a broader sense, true”.

The suit was settled amid a bristling controversy between Laxalt and the McClatchy organization with details not made public.

“As soon as I saw her face on [Facebook] and her story, I felt through my faith that I had to share her story and have others help her out as well,” Pimienta said. “If it wasn’t going to be me, then who? Everyone deserves to live a life of full joy and not have to deal with something like that.”

There have been a variety of both anonymous and public donations to Bertukan’s account, but the goal of $70,000 has not yet been reached. Some who contributed to the GoFundMe left words of support along with their donation, such as Rana Abu-Elniaj.

“I love you Aden, you’ll always be my best friend,” Abu-Elniaj said. “I know you’re strong enough to overcome this.

God bless you Aden.”

Others who knew Hailu personally, such as Isabelle Langham and Nati Alemayehu also commented with words of comfort for Hailu and her family members during their time of distress.

At the height of the intense libel drama, coffee cups appeared in the Sacramento Bee newsroom proclaiming in bright red ink: “Laxalt Our New Editor Publisher”.

McCulloch ironically recalled to a friend how he played basketball for Reno High School against Laxalt at Carson City’s high school.

The Center for Investigative Reporting, at its San Francisco program honoring McCulloch, cited “his passion for investigative reporting” by noting he “was named in seven libel suits—all unsuccessful—during his McClatchy years that helped establish protections from which journalists still benefit today”.

McCulloch was frequently hailed as a journalist’s journalist. When he retired as managing editor of the San Francisco Examiner in l991, staff writer Harry Jupiter commented: “These are bittersweet days at The Examiner. Reporters don’t usually get misty-eyed at the departure of the boss. But Frank McCulloch is not a typical boss...McCulloch leaves enormous footprints. He has been one of the outstanding movers and shakers in American journalism for 50 years…Even more than his magnificent achievements, there is something else.

Along with this, Bertukan explained that attempting to understand the many “medical jargons” provided to the family has been a difficult feature of their situation.

Bertukan explained that aside from the constant trials each day has held for [her] and her family, she still feels as though she is dreaming. Hailu has just returned from spending spring break with Bertukan when she admitted herself to Saint Mary’s.

“I go back to look at our pictures together and it makes me think that life is so short and unpredictable,” Bertukan said. “One day she was walking and the next she is lying in bed.”

Hailu has just declared her sociology major. The cousins had continuously conversed about Hailu’s enthusiasm for her chosen career path. When Bertukan asked her cousin what she enjoyed about the subject, Hailu said that she likes to observe and understand people.

Being that the family is struggling with acquiring Hailu’s medical records from the hospital or any additional information as to how her illness developed, the medical bills are piling up. As her Monday, April 27, a total of $16,403 of $70,000 has been raised.

“We believe that each day holds a miracle and we cannot give up on our Aden just in 18 days,” Bertukan said.

the right direction, what the university should absolutely not do is start to segregate these students from the rest of the undergraduate or graduate populations in their living spaces.

The introduction of LBGT residence halls would be a good way to make students feel safe, but the university should start working towards inclusion and not exclusion.

The ever-present construction on campus should also be used as an opportunity to include more inclusive services for students.

The new Pennington Achievement Center will be more accommodating to students with not only gender differences, but also various religious philosophies.

According to current ASUN vice president Elliott Malin there will be a kosher kitchen and an inter-faith prayer room inside of the achievement center that will be built over the space that Getchell Library once occupied. Moving forward, it does not matter what your background is, but how you want to better yourself and the people around you.

Like past students at any college institution, this is a time to leave a legacy. Students at the university should be a united front for change since this is what they will remember as their time comes and goes and when they inevitably will leave the school on the hill. The University of Nevada, Reno should further embrace student diversity because this is the direction of progress.

To personalize this, I became intimately familiar with both kinds when I was a combat correspondent during the Vietnam war, when political and policy censorship was largely a failure.

“I believe history will show that it has not been effective in any war. It’s the policy and political kind that Ed Kennedy violated.

Throughout his long career as a combat correspondent, Kennedy respected military censorship.

The historical record shows that his career was ruined and his reputation destroyed because he did the right thing by reporting the news that the entire world had every right to know. “ McCulloch and the committee of journalists urged the Pulitzer Board to award Kennedy the high honor. It declined to do so without explanation.

In retirement, McCulloch confided to

friends that he still dreamed of being back in the newsroom, and he didn’t stray too far from it, continuing to consult with newspapers, talk with journalism students and lend his expertise to the nationally prominent Center for Investigative Reporting in the Bay Area.

McCulloch is survived by daughters Michaele Lee (Dee Dee) Parman and Candace Sue (Candy) Akers of Santa Rosa, CA. He was preceded in death by wife Jakie Caldwell McCulloch, son David Caldwell McCulloch and sons in law Mike Parman and Ron Akers. He is also survived by grandchildren Christopher T. Parman and Leah M. Parman, step grandchildren Elizabeth A. Akers and Erica L. Akers, great grandchildren Sienna P. Clark, Alden L. Clark, Cole A. Parman, Jake R. Parman and Zachariah L. Akers.

Journalists from around the nation attended or sent messages to be read at a memorial service held June 9, 2018 in Santa Rosa where McCulloch and his family lived following his retirement.

In lieu of flowers, donations have been sent to the Frank McCulloch Courage in Journalism Award Program at the Reynolds School of Journalism, University of Nevada, Reno Nevada, UNR Foundation.

While we came up empty at the end of 2014 in terms of earning that elusive Pacemaker award, we came back stronger in the fall. With a new logo change, thanks to the superb design skills of Nicole Kowalewski, the backbone of the newspaper during my time, we were locked into the goal of getting back on top of the collegiate journalism mountain once more. From top to bottom this was perhaps the most skilled group during my time at the paper.

Rollie Melton of the “Nevada State Journal” and the “Reno Evening Gazette,” the paper’s corporate attorneys were there. There was also a prominent attorney from the Thomas Jefferson Foundation (now called the Center) in Washington DC. And in a real surprise, well-known civil rights activist lawyer William Kunstler was working for me pro bono. He was the director of the national ACLU and had successfully defended Martin Luther King, Stokely Carmichael, Lenny Bruce, Angela Davis and many others. I felt better.

Louis Test, representing ASUN, is a great local attorney. But at the time of this hearing, he was quite young and simply overmatched against a national team of experts on freedom of the press and civil rights law. Not to mention that the student government leaders had never seen so many lights and cameras focused on them in Jot Travis. I was re-instated on the spot.

NS: Trying to find it?

TL: Yeah, except it’s just a weasel behind a wall. And then we end up shooting Junior through the door. I like that one quite a bit.

NS: Did you ever get the weasel out of the wall?

TL: No, never.

McCulloch wrote the group’s lead letter petitioning for a posthumous Pulitzer Prize for Ed Kennedy who broke the news of the German surrender May 7, l945 to the Allied Forces. Kennedy was fired by the news service amid claims that he broke an embargo delaying the announcement for political purposes.

TL: Those [episodes] are actually used as training videos for the L.A. police department.

NS: Are they really?

TL: The one called “Shoot My Dog.” You know that one? Where the guy comes up and he’s like, “I can’t afford to put him down, he’s dying” and the guys take him behind the garbage cans and shoot the sweet, old dog. Tehn a lady comes out and says, “You shot my dog!”

They used that one and the one where the lady flushes all the cocaine down the toilet and they think they’re at the wrong apartment are used for the L.A. Sheriff’s Department. For training purposes.

NS: Were they like what-not-to-do training purposes or what-to-do?

TL: No, no, they were in the what-notto-do category.

What you do and say as a journalist often speaks to a much broader audience than you intended. You constantly need to be aware of how a story may be perceived by others.

While idealistically, I felt advertising and editorial were two distinct worlds, that’s seldom the pure case.

There can be, and often is, some crossing of those lines. Lastly, your content must be put in perspective of other news. It was a critical mistake for a university student editor to be unaware of the activities in Carson City or elsewhere in government. A month later when the University budget was complete, running this ad would probably never have drawn outside attention.

Some interesting post scripts are that a formal request by the Geology Department to procure six “Auto Suck” devices for field trips was denied by the UNR purchasing department. And finally, in a very, very private ceremony, the late-Dr. Miller and new student body president Terry Reynolds (now a Deputy Director of Business and Industry for Nevada) presented me with the certificate shown below as the “Outstanding ‘Auto Suck’ Dealer of ASUN for 1972 – 1973 School Year.”

NS: Why are there palm trees in Reno 911? Is it one of those myths that you’re never going to explain?

TL: If we could afford the CGI to remove them, we certainly would.

NS: Do you get a lot of feedback from real police people telling you it’s so great or it’s so wrong?

TL: This is going to sound like a joke, but I’m 100 percent serious. Most of the cops we meet say it’s the most accurate cop show on T.V. They do because it feels like CSI and those investigative shows, everybody’s very slick and they’re always running of to a lab and things are wrapped up very neatly in the end. The fact is, that’s not what most of police work is like. A lot of it comes from us shooting in a real police station in Carson, CA. NS: When you’re not filming, do they

have police meetings in there?

TL: Oh always. In fact, they kinda work around us when we’re there. The last time we were there, they brought in a guy in handcuffs who was being booked and who saw me in the shorts and yelled out, “Oh my god, you guys were shooting here the last time I was getting arrested.”

NS: What does your character like about Reno?

TL: It is three-and-a-half, four hours from San Francisco. That was when Dangle was just sort of dropping hints that he might, you know, be into dudes.

NS: Do you think that will ever be answered?

TL: I don’t think that will ever be fully answered. I hope that we keep that as weird as it can possibly be.

Ault said Nevada’s game against Boise State was an event that brought the city together.

“The thing that really excites me is it gave our com-

munity something to hang on to and something we can brag about,” Ault said. “Because times are tough, i think there is an obligation to bring out community good things.”

The game even turned non-football fans into supporters, even if it was for just a day.

Carissa Gutierrez, a 22-year-old business administration major, didn’t watch too much football before this season. For her, the Wolf Pack’s game against Boise State was a must-see.

“It’s the most important game in a while,” Gutierrez said. “The game put us on the map and made is more

recognized and hopefully made more people want to attend.”

Beating Boise State may seem like a storybook ending for Nevada’s season, but the Wolf Pack still has work to do.

Nevada travels to play Louisiana Tech in a game that may be less glamorous on the surface, but holds much significance.

A Nevada victory means the Wolf Pack would earn a share of the conference title, the team’s first since 2005. A loss, and Nevada could drop to third.

“We haven’t won a champi-

onship,” Ault said. “And the players have to understand that. Beating Boise is a great thrill, but that won’t matter.

You have to find a way to be La. Tech and they have a lot to play for.”

The Wolf Pack’s victory over the Broncos also affected Nevada’s — and the rest of the bowl-eligible WAC team’s — bowl outlook.

ESPN.com predicted the Wolf Pack to play in the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl prior to Friday. Now it predicts Nevada for the Humanitarian Bowl. Nevada could also go to the New Mexico Bowl, the other open bowl game with WAC affiliation.

What of the hundreds of others who do live in shelters but were not among the 20 chosen to participate? And, most importantly, what will become of the program’s participants after the

program ends? According to an article in the RGJ, program officials “hope the 20 participants can use the real-life work experience to find a full-time job.” For those facing life on the streets, hope just isn’t enough.

The City of Reno and the Nevada as a state must realize that problem of homelessness lies in the social and economic factors that force people into temporary shelters and onto the streets, not in the existence

of homeless people. If the city truly wants to improve its image, it will start by putting an end to the dehumanization of the homeless that is a far greater shame than any tent city will ever be.

Sagebrush Alumni Association sponsors minting of commemorative medallions

In celebration of the Nevada Sagebrush’s 125th anniversary at the University of Nevada, Reno, the Sagebrush Alumni Chapter is sponsored the minting of a commemorative pure silver medallion.

The medallions feature lettering from 1940’s Sagebrush editions, a quill representing journalism, the famous “CC” mint mark and an “N” to represent the university. The back features the Nevada state seal. The medallions were minted on the state’s most historic coin press, the Coin Press No. 1.

“We wanted something special for the 125th anniversary and felt that a limited edition of 125 medallions would be a fitting tribute,” said Amy Beck, president of the Nevada Sagebrush Alumni Chapter. “Tying it in with state history and the old coin press makes it even more special.”

The first medallion was minted on Thursday, Sept. 20. Director of the Nevada State Museum Myron Freedman minted the first medallion

before allowing Sagebrush alumni Guy Clifton, Amy Beck and Sen. Julia Ratti to mint one themselves.

Coin Press No. 1 was used to strike millions of gold and silver coins when it first began use at the Carson City Mint that opened in 1870. The press ceased use when the mint closed in 1893 — the year the Nevada Sagebrush was founded at the university as The Student Record. It was sent to the Philadelphia Mint and later transferred to the San Francisco Mint.

The mint was scheduled to be demolished and thrown out until a journalist saw it in 1958 in the San Francisco Mint due to the large metal piece on the top of it that read “Virginia and Truckee” and “Carson, Nev.” After the journalist alerted the Nevada State Museum of its location, the State of Nevada was able to purchase the press for $225 and relocate it back to Nevada’s capital.

The medallions are being given to attendees of the 125th Nevada Sagebrush Anniversary Dinner on Friday, Oct. 19, at as a “thank you” and keepsake.

The Sagebrush celebrates 125 years, and looks to the future

By Madeline Purdue forNSights As The Nevada Sagebrush prepares to celebrate its 125th anniversary on Oct. 19, the current and past staffs have reflected on their time at the newspaper, how it helped them in their career and what the legacy of the Sagebrush is.

I have a different relationship with the newspaper than most of the staff, as my mom was on staff during her time at the university and one of my dad’s great friends from his time here, Guy Clifton, is one of the best known past editors and now a famous Nevada historian. Since deciding to continue on the family legacy of attending UNR, I have felt that I was destined to lead this famous organization that holds a very special place in my heart.

The Sagebrush is and always has been everything a newspaper should be. The Sagebrush was born from students rebelling against the Board of Regents. On Oct. 1, 1893, students at the university gathered after being told by the Board they couldn’t have a newspaper at the university because it was too much responsibility for students to handle. On Oct. 19, the first-ever copy of the Sagebrush, known then as the Student Record, was published as an independent newspaper and started the legacy of defiance the Sagebrush still holds today.

Every editor for the past 125 years has a story describing the time or times they received pushback for what was published about the university, and I am no exception. However, most of us Sagebrushers are of the opinion that if you’re not receiving pushback, you’re not doing your job.

The Sagebrush is a staple at the university, and is important to students for more reasons than one. Yes, we thrive off of putting out an investigative story and giving the university community essential information on the things happening around them, but we have also been the training ground for future journalists and often have helped skyrocket their career. What better place is there to practice journalism than a student newspaper?

We have been awarded for our coverage more

times than any human should count. In recent history, the Sagebrush has been honored with the Pacemaker Award - one of the highest honors a student newspaper can receive - from the Associated Collegiate Press seven times.

Sagebrushers take what they’ve learned here and carry this award-winning spirit out into the real world after graduating. Among other levels of achievement, five Sagebrush alumni have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Not too shabby.

Obviously, student journalism is important and beneficial not only to university communities, but also to the student reporters as well. However, times are changing, and newspapers don’t hold the same value as they once did, which is reflected onto student newspapers across the country.

Some newspapers face funding issues, censorship or being shut down from their university due to what they write.

These issues faced by all student newsrooms across the country spurred the national movement #SaveStudentNewsrooms, which brought light to these issues and raised money for student publications. The Sagebrush was happy and eager to get involved in the national conversation because we don’t face the same censorship issues since we are an independent newspaper. However, no one is immune to funding issues, even an award-winning, legacy institution such as us.

We are celebrating 125 years of incredible, groundbreaking student journalism, and we plan on celebrating at least 125 more. The importance of student journalism cannot be understated, and needs to continue to be the watchdogs of the university they cover. In honor of our 125th year, we are asking all of you to consider donating to or advertising with the Nevada Sagebrush so we can continue our award-winning, rebel-spirit legacy.
