Fort Scott Tribune Items from the past
75 Years Ago - 1951 Charles Lifer of northeast of Fulton said he had sold his truck and milk route to Russell Bloomfield of Prescott. Lifer stated that he had too much business trying to run the farm and care for livestock and that it made the hours too long. Earl Walker and his son Junior of Prescott still think the old fashioned was of husking corn by hand is better than picking it by machinery. The men were planning the latter part of last week to set in on the job of gatherings 125 acres of corn. D. R. Nichols of 623 Wilson reported last week that the family was eating roasting ears out of the garden. He said that after he furnished picking the raspberries he went in and planted sweet corn about the first of July between the berry rows, and it has
done well. 100 Years Ago - 1926 Harry Warren, former county attorney, this afternoon was unanimously nominated for state senator by Bourbon County Democrats at a mass meeting in the District Courtroom. It as been discovered that there is a paved road practically all the way from Fort Scott to St. Louis and that by this road it is only 25 miles farther to the Missouri metropolis than by way of Kansas City. This better road is by way of Springfield, Mo. 125 Years Ago - 1901 Sheriff W.E. Brooks and A.B. Combs are having trouble with 120 head of cattle they have pastured on John Henning’s place down on Paint Creek. The Stock brioke into the corn field on Michael Rutheroff’s place, which adjoins the farm, and did considerable damage.
Mr. Rutheroff does not ask for damages but he made it plain that the stock must be kept out of his corn field. 150 Years ago - 1876 We paid out last season $50,000 for castor beans and flax seed. We want to pay out the same amount this season for beans and seed here at Walnut Station, Kan., Deerfield, Mo., Pruitt Station (Moundville Switch), all at Fort Scott prices – Davis and Stuart Co. We shipped today from Walnut Station a car of Walker Wheat said to be the most reliable variety grown in southern Kansas – David and Stuart Co.
