50 Years Ago 1976 Wichita, Kan. - A serious shortage of space in Kansas grain elevators will create problems during the fall harvest of corn, milo and soybeans and may force farmers to sell grain at depressed prices, agricultural officials predict. “Most of the country elevators are full or nearly full,” said John Junior Armstrong, president of the Kansas Farm Bureau. “They don’t have much space for the row crops and it looks likes we’ll have some problems.” Elevators that were virtually emptied by the 1972 Russian grain sale now are brimming with wheat that farmers have refused to sell at a price below $3 a bushel. Grain industry officials said the wheat log-jam now poses problems for the harvest of feed-grains and soybeans in coming weeks.
