We will ever live to serve her, Live to give our best, Live to make our Alma Mater Pride of all the West. Let her praises wake the echoes, While we pledge anew, Hearts and minds and hands and voices To Nevada U.

Several songs have served as the Nevada alma mater over the years, including “Beside the Waters of the Truckee,” “U of N So Gay” and “Nevada, My Nevada.” The current alma mater, “Mackay Song,” with words by Jack H. Morse, came into use circa 1955, although its official adoption date is unknown. The earliest version of “Mackay Song” in print was included in the 1924 University Songbook.

Academic Dress

Academic costumes date to the 11th and 12th centuries with the first organized institutions of learning in Europe. In 1895, the academic institutions in the United States adopted a code of academic dress that gave this country a beautiful and impressive method of signifying scholastic honors. With the exception of revisions in 1932 and 1959, the code has been virtually unchanged since its inception.

MACE. Once a terrible instrument of medieval close combat, the mace has evolved into an ornamental, ceremonial staff borne at the head of processions marking the beginning of a convocation or commencement.

The black mortarboard is most commonly used in the United States. The tassel, normally worn in the left front quadrant of the cap, is black, although it may be of the color appropriate to the subject of the degree. The tassel on the doctor’s cap is usually made of gold thread.

GOWNS. The bachelor’s gown has a long, pointed sleeve. The master’s gown has an oblong sleeve open at the wrist (or some older gowns may be open near the upper part of the arm). The doctor’s gown is fuller than the others with velvet panels full length on the front and three velvet crossbars on each sleeve in black or in a color distinctive of the subject pertaining to the individual’s degree. The gowns are black except for the doctor’s,

which may be a color representing the institution that awarded the degree. A number of colorful cords and sashes recognizing student achievement and activities are worn by many of the graduates.

HOODS. Academic hoods signify the wearer has received a master’s, doctoral or other advanced degree. The hood, draped over the shoulders and down the back, indicates both the institution granting the degree and the academic area of specialization. The silk lining of the hood represents the color or colors of the institution from which the degree was received. The higher the degree, the more the lining is revealed.

The level of the degree is designated by the length of the hood and the width of the velvet edging. The master’s hood is three-and-one-half feet long, and the doctor’s is four feet long. (The shorter bachelor’s hood is not given at Nevada.)

The velvet edging is three and five inches in width for the master’s and doctor’s degrees, respectively. The color of the velvet signifies the field of learning, such as orange for engineering, green for medicine and gold for science. For Ph.D. or Doctor of Philosophy degrees, the dark blue color represents mastery of the discipline of learning and scholarship in any field, and is not intended to necessarily represent the field of philosophy.

The Distinguished Nevadan represents the most prestigious award conferred by the Board of Regents. It is bestowed upon prominent individuals who have made significant achievements that have contributed to the cultural, scientific or social advancement of Nevada.

JUDGE

PETER I. BREEN’S career of public service spans more than 50 years, and his devotion and impact on Nevada’s judicial processes has been substantial. Born in Reno, Nevada, Judge Breen was raised in Goldfield and Tonopah, Nevada, where he graduated from high school in 1956. He then graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1960. He completed the University of Santa Clara Law School in 1963 and passed the bar in that year. Breen served in the Attorney General’s office and practiced law in Carson City and Reno, Nevada, until 1973 when he was appointed to the Second Judicial District Court by then-Governor Mike O’Callaghan. He served in Department 7 of that district until 2006, having been elected six times to the post without opposition, and has served as a Senior District Judge since his retirement. In July of 1995, the Second Judicial District Court established a felony adult drug court over which Breen presided. The Second Judicial District has grown to include drug court, diversion court, mental health court, felony DUI court, veterans’ court, and prison reentry court. Always active in the community, Judge Breen’s founding of the Washoe County Courthouse Historical and Preservation Society in 1999 proved pivotal for the purpose of restoration of the historical courthouse and its history.

DR. SUSAN DESMOND-HELLMANN has contributed greatly to the scientific and economic advancement of Nevada, the U.S. and the world.

Dr. Desmond-Hellmann grew up in Reno, Nevada as one of seven children. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in pre-medicine and an M.D. from the University of Nevada, Reno in 1982. She received her residency training at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) where she served as chief resident. She is board-certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, and also holds a master’s degree in public health from the University of California, Berkeley School of Public Health. Dr. Desmond-Hellmann served as the chief executive officer of The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation from 2014 -2020. She was previously the chancellor of the University of California, San Francisco. An oncologist by training, Dr. Desmond-Hellmann is a recognized leader on issues of higher education, public health, drug development, regulatory innovation and health policy. Prior to her tenure at UCSF, she was president of product development at Genentech, where she led the development and introduction of two of the first gene-targeted therapies for cancer, Avastin and Herceptin. In 2021, Desmond-Hellmann was appointed by President Joe Biden to the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).

DISTINGUISHED NEVADAN 2023

JUSTICE JAMES W. HARDESTY’S career in public service has had a profound impact on the judiciary in the State of Nevada. Justice Hardesty graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting in 1970. While an undergraduate student, Justice Hardesty was elected President of the student body and named outstanding senior graduate. In 2021 he was named Outstanding Alumnus. Justice Hardesty graduated from the University of Pacific McGeorge School of Law in 1975. In November 1998, Justice Hardesty was elected District Court Judge for the Second Judicial District of Washoe County, Reno, Nevada. In November 2004, Justice Hardesty was elected to the Nevada Supreme Court and was re-elected to the Court without opposition in 2010 and 2016. Justice Hardesty has led numerous improvements for Nevada’s judicial system including: creation of Business Court; the method for Judicial Funding; implementation of Jury Trial processes; Statewide Juvenile Justice Reform; Access to Justice; Statewide Adult and minor Guardianship reform; adoption of Evidence-Based Pretrial Release procedures; adoption of Statewide Rules of Criminal Procedure; updating rules for the Preservation, Access, and Sealing of Court Records; recommending rules for the Adjudication of Water Law Cases; and implementing best practices for Virtual Advocacy in Nevada’s Courts. In recognition of his contributions to Nevada’s judicial system including the creation of the Court of Appeals, the Nevada Supreme Court recently named the Las Vegas Courthouse the James W. Hardesty Courthouse.

HONORARY DEGREE 2023

MAGGIE CARLTON has worked tirelessly for the people of Nevada throughout a distinguished and groundbreaking career in public service. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, the Nevada State Senator and Nevada State Assemblywoman is the longest serving female legislator in the State of Nevada, having served 12 years on the Senate and 12 in the Assembly until reaching term limits in 2022. She is also the first member of the legislature to serve the maximum number of terms in both the State Assembly and State Senate. She prioritized education, workforce development and worked to establish more career and technical education programs for our schools. Her leadership included chairing the the Assembly Ways and Means Committee, Commerce and Labor Committee, and the Committee on High-Level Radioactive Waste. One of her top priorities was to provide Nevadans with better access to quality, affordable health care that is easily navigated. Ms. Carlton’s professional experience includes working as a waitress in gaming. In this capacity, she also served as a shop steward for the Culinary Workers Union at Treasure Island Hotel & Casino where she represented and advocated on behalf of her fellow workers. Ms. Carlton worked as a community development director for the Great Basin Primary Care Association of Nevada. In 2023 she continues her work on behalf of Nevada’s children through her appointment to the Nevada State Board of Education by Governor Joe Lombardo.
