From the President Melinda Cagle A Porsche is a bucket list item checked off for many of us. i’m sure each of you can point to at least one person that planted the seed for cars and driving leading to fullfledged automotive passion. For me, it was my father. He was the youngest of six children born to a tobacco farmer. He worked in a textile mill and helped my grandparents run the farm. As a toddler, i rode the tractor as he worked the fields and learned to drive from his lap. i loved the sounds the engine made, and the wind in my face. daddy was a fan of nASCAr and drag racing and liked to drive fast. He remains a FSR President Melinda Cagle Chevy man to this day. Family vacations usually involved visiting a track, and my first visit to daytona was in 1969. My earliest memory of the family car was a 1967 butternut yellow Chevelle SS 396 with a four speed manual. The car was no frills inside but it was loud and fast. even as a small child, i knew the ride was more fun in the Chevelle than the farm truck. The movement of his hands and feet, the car roaring to life, and the speed over country roads were ingredients for pure joy. in rural Virginia, church parking lots become the local concours every Sunday morning. daddy and i cleaned up the Chevelle on Saturday so it looked its best for Sunday. While the women talked about clothes and recipes, the men talked about cars, trucks, and tractors. After church, we visited my grandparents. i was fascinated listening to my mother’s father, a mechanic, unravel the mysteries of what made a car work. it was like a foreign language and puzzle all in one. i learned this language over the years as i helped daddy work on various machines on the farm. Today, the world is much different. i was driving a farm pickup by age eleven. i couldn’t wait to get my license and the freedom it allowed. Today’s youth have little interest in driving especially when smart phones and tablets entertain them more. The future points to vehicles offering the comforts of home while transporting passengers to their destination. ride sharing and autonomous vehicles will combine to eliminate car ownership in urban areas. it’s up to all of us to plant the seed of automotive passion with Millennials and gen z. They will become buyers and caretakers for the Porsches we prize today. PCA recognizes this and offers the PCA Junior program for children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews of members. i encourage you to invite your friends to an event, the track, a breakfast, or simply offer a ride in your Porsche. When i brought my 911 home to show my parents, daddy insisted we cruise through town. He wanted everyone in Altavista to see he was riding in a Porsche. Automotive passion, pass it on…

First Settlers Region & Tidewater Chapter BMWCCA BBQ

OUT AND A BOUT

Submitted by Vince Canepa, Activity Chairman On April 28th ron Boustedt opened his place in the deep Creek area of Chesapeake for the fourth year. After moving the event to April in 2018 we realized we had found a sweet spot with the weather conditions so we continued with that choice in 2019. For the second year in a row the weather was perfect; lots of sunshine, and to everyone’s relief, warm but not hot. Another change carried over from 2018 – no band. This change has been universally welcomed.

Western FSR Breakfast - May 11, 2019

ron’s place has abundant parking to display the cars and there were plenty of great Porsches and BMWs to admire last year we tried to adjust to the mix of cars – have some unique cars displayed on the lawn adjacent to the pool. This year we had a brace of Corvettes, a Maserati, an Acura nSX, a BMW i8. On the Porsche side we encouraged our folks to bring out some vintage cars. george and Pam Michaels brought out their 928gT and 930 Turbo – both beautifully preserved and prepared examples. eric Apotheker and his daughter brought his lovely 356. An ever popular exhibit was ron’s 1950 Plymouth Special delux. The BBQ was german themed, with brats and chops and plenty of refreshments. it was great event and both clubs have agreed to do it again next year.

backwards (still won FTd in class!)…chewing up dozens of dry aspirins while navigating for gary Simmons in rallies all over the state…or the horror of discovering my 2012 Type 991 destroyed with a screwdriver, red paint and eggs inside and out in my own garage. There are many more.

Bill McAllister, Past President FSR, 1981 Where do you live? Marla and i live in richmond most of the year, and Stuart Florida in the winter where we are members of the gold Coast region.

Do you have a favorite Porsche? My current car is clearly the best of the lot. But i would have to say that my ’79 911SC was my favorite. it was a consistent concours winner, it was lowered and set up for track events, it had 225 horsepower instead of the stock 172, and it was balanced so well that it was like an extension of my own body when i drove it.

long have you been a member SPOTLIGHT How of FSR? i joined in 1976, but took a 23-year time out to pursue billfish on my boat. i rejoined in 2012.

Describe your perfect Porsche day With my sweet new bride, in a 2018 rented black Type 991, in perfect weather, crossing the Alps nine times, and driving 165 mph on the autobahn in the 2018 Treffen-Plus. (Fast lane Travel.)

What is your memory of being President of FSR? When? i was President of FSr in 1981. it was a wonderful year of many friendships and continuous competition in various PCA events.

What keeps you in FSR/PCA? i like the people, and it gives me excuses to drive my car in what someone called “twisty bits.”

What was your first Porsche? A used 1972 911T. Tell us how the FSR has changed from when you first joined. The members are older and seem to be stronger financially. There seem to be more low-key, fun-run type events. The charity mission within PCA is new to me. FSr also now has a de program of its own. in my earlier years, i was a dual member of Potomac and went to track events they sponsored. i was a red group de instructor for Potomac.

"IT'S NOT JUST THE CARS, IT'S THE PEOPLE"

Introducing New Charities to First Settlers Region Porsche Club of America submitted by Mary Burns Ball First Settlers region Porsche Club of America has been giving back to our community for over 10 years by donating over $300,000. in honor of this remarkable feat, two new charities have been added to First Settlers PCA. These new charities are Health Brigade and Central Virginia Food Bank/Feed More.

Bill enjoying Lake Como, Italy

What kind of Porsche do you drive? 2017 911 Carrera S.

Health Brigade (formerly the Fan Free Clinic), has been in operation since 1970 and will soon celebrate 50 years of providing exceptional health services to those least served, in a caring and non-judgmental environment. Services provided by Health Brigade to 12,000 individuals last year include: Primary Care Medical Services, Mental Health and Wellness Services and Health Outreach and Advocacy Services.

What other Porsches have you owned in the past. ’72 911T, ’73 911e, ’78 911 Targa, ’79 911SC (owned for 24 years), ’83 911 Cabriolet, ’12 911 Carrera S (destroyed in ’15 by an ex girlfriend), ’17 911 Carrera S. What is your first Porsche memory? in high school, driving a gray 356 that my dad borrowed for a few days from one of his car-dealer friends.

The Central Virginia Food Bank is one of many programs provided by Feed More, a network of agencies that provide more than 52,000 meals each day to neighbors in need across 34 counties and cities across central Virginia. Central Virginia Food Bank has been in operation since 1980 and was created by 60 local churches and charities that were concerned about growing hunger and poverty in our region.

What is your favorite Porsche event you have attended? When i was most active in FSr, when i was in my late thirties and early forties, i was passionate about Potomac region de events at Summit Point. The day i was “promoted” to red group instructor was joyous.

Bill & Marla driving the Alpine Pass

These new additions to our charities will increase the number of lives that we, as FSr PCA members, can assist. Please keep these new charities in mind as you participate in raffles at our monthly breakfasts, White elephant Auctions at our holiday parties, silent auctions at the Spring Charity event, charity laps during driver education events, the Air & Classic Car Show in the Fall, and Turkeys in the Trunk in november.

What is your favorite personal car-related story? it’s impossible to pick. Maybe taking the engine out of my 911SC to clean it for concours…or sailing across the finish line at the Crewe airstrip

VIR May 24 - 26, 2019 Report Article and photos submitted by doug Worrall, Past President First Settler’s High Performance driver’s education(HPde) event at Virginia international raceway(Vir) May 24-26, 2019 was a blast! As in blast furnace maybe. it was hot! We “enjoyed” mid to upper 90’s and bright sunshine all three days. For those new to the club or unfamiliar with these acronyms, HPde’s are opportunities for us to take our cars to racetracks and legally drive them safely at speed. Vir is a fast road course located near danville, VA. it is a world class motorsports resort, complete with onsite lodging, dining, a pool, and even spa options available. Vir has a total of five track configurations. We were using the Full Course which is over three miles in length. With lots of elevation changes due to southwestern Virginia’s rolling hills, the track is both beautiful and challenging. To promote safety, our cars are technically inspected (teched) each morning before we get out on the track. A driver’s meeting is also held each morning to remind us of track procedures and give us a group safety briefing. Since we were experiencing August temperatures in May, Tim Ashbridge, our Chief Track instructor, told us to “take care of the most important piece of track equipment we possess; our brains”. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate was the theme of the weekend.

Morning Drivers Meeting - from left to right: Marco Estrada, Scott Hoffman, Tim Ashbridge

VIR Viewing Stand

Marco estrada(HPde Chair) and Scott Hoffman(HPde registrar) kept our weekend running smoothly. We go out onto the track in “run groups” of which there are five. The green and Blue groups have an incar instructor riding along. There are classroom instruction sessions each day for green, Blue, and White group drivers. Between classroom sessions and in-car instruction, these drivers learn vehicle dynamics, track terminology, passing procedures, how to drive “the line”, and other skills that make us better at driving our Porsches in any environment. White, Black, and red groups are solo groups, with the red group usually designated as the instructor’s group. i drive in the Black group and occasionally ask an instructor to ride along for an assessment and feedback. i also like to attend classroom instruction sessions to keep the information fresh in my mind while out on the track. i am proof that you can teach an old dog new tricks, it just takes longer for it to sink in! When we’re not out on the track, we’re hanging out in the paddock. The paddock is a large parking lot next to the track where we keep our cars and all of the gear that we’ve brought to the track. That gear runs the gamut from small tool kits to full-on race haulers. you’ll find all kinds of cars, all kinds of drivers, and all kinds of budgets in the paddock. everyone has a smile on their face, sometimes from ear to ear. Fast and friendly conversations are easy, and i’ve received lots of mechanical help over the course of my years at the track. luckily that was not necessary at this event.

if you enjoy driving your Porsche, you might want to consider participating in an HPde! First Settlers has another one coming up in October. Once again, we’ll be on the Full Course at Virginia international raceway. October is a beautiful time of year in southwestern VA. Hopefully we’ll have October weather in October. i’ll look for you in the paddock!

IN MEMORY OF JERRY BURKS Submitted by ed Merry / Photos courtesy of Mike Ball This PCA motto is often quoted. But on Saturday, 6 April, 15 Porsches and 24 First Settler members demonstrated the substance of it again. Jerry recently died of cancer. He was active in our club and loved touring in his Porsche. So it was most appropriate that we left the Williamsburg breakfast and toured down the Colonial Parkway from Jamestown to yorktown. The eastern red bud was in bloom, a promising hint of Spring. The tour stopped at James river and york river overlooks. A good time was had by all. Plus good memories of Jerry were shared. “It is not just the cars, but the people.”

First Settlers Region Built a House for Habitat for Humanity! It is, and will always be, the home built by the First Settlers Region, Porsche Club of America. Article and Photos submitted by Phil & Josie grandfield Ten years ago, the First Settlers region started a charity program and we were proud to raise $6,000 for our local charities. This year our region raised over $95,000 in cash, services and items-in-kind to build a home. The project took the commitment of a great team, to include our Board of directors, members and sponsors. As a result of our work and dedication, Cecilia and her son Mason are living in a home of their own.

The Habitat Committee-Mark Hugel, Phil & Josie Grandfield, George Michaels (Ken Thomas not shown)

Sponsors were key

This project started early in 2018 and crossed the finish line in April 2019. The key to making the dream a reality was the drive and enthusiasm of the First Settlers region Habitat Team. led by the Charity Chairperson, Josie grandfield, the core group included Mark Hugel, george Michaels and Ken Thomas. The team worked for a full year to solicit donations, attended numerous coordination meetings, and planned and executed fund raisers. The Committee’s journey began with learning everything we could about the Habitat for Humanity program including the family approval process, government oversight by the department of Housing and Urban development (HUd), how our financial donation would be “protected” and how our member involvement would be critical to the successful completion of the house. The Committee met with the Habitat for Humanity officials many times to negotiate the details of our agreement. With the agreement in hand, the Committee made the appeal to our Board of directors and convinced them we could make our dream happen. We needed to understand and explain to our Board and membership that the Habitat for Humanity program is not a hand out; rather, it is a hand up to a needy family. The Board agreed and the green flag dropped! The Committee mailed a letter to every member of the region explaining the Habitat for Humanity program and the Board’s decision to change our charity program and try to do something different and really big. We explained the first challenge of building a First Settlers region house was to raise a minimum of $50,000. Habitat for Humanity could not start their process until we met our financial obligations. There would be opportunities to get our hands dirty by helping to build the house but we needed the money first. We thought raising the first half of the funds would go relatively quick but that the second half of the money would come over many months or even over the course of the rest of 2018. As it turned out, we raised the needed funds in two months!!!! Finally, with all of the hurdles overcome, construction of the First Setters region, Habitat for Humanity house started in late summer of 2018. The Committee, our region President, several members and representatives from our sponsors, Checkered Flag Porsche of Virginia Beach and Prevailance, were present at the ground breaking ceremony with officials from Habitat for Humanity. everyone was excited to get started!! The open slots for our dedicated “build days” filled up quickly. We had 20 members armed with hammers and hard hats at the site early on the first day. The goal for the day was to frame and erect the outside walls of the house but we met that goal by lunchtime! The Building Coordinator made an extra run for more lumber as we kept the nail guns firing. Our team of Porsche enthusiasts worked all day and we erected all of the interior walls too!

level of donations and volunteer hours grew. Over 200 members from all over the region (including some who have moved out of the area) donated money, time, or both, on this project. Over 17 sponsors pitched in. An estimated 2000 hours of direct labor went in building the house through fundraising, coordination and swinging hammers! Overall, First Settlers members invested sweat equity to build the walls, hang the siding, paint the house, sweep the floors, build a shed and plant the landscaping. What a team! When it was over, the project had raised over $65,000 in cash and another $30,000 in materials donated by our members and sponsors. As a direct result of our members’ commitment, the demolition of the previous house, flooring, paint, cabinets, countertops, new appliances and landscaping for the new house were all donated. March 30th was a beautiful spring day with perfect weather for the dedication ceremony of “Our House”. The event attracted a big crowd of members that arrived in a parade of Porsches led by Mark and luana Hugel with Cecilia and Mason riding on top of the back seat of the cabriolet. Mark Hugel, a great spokesman for our team, had the opportunity, via an interview on local TV, to explain why all of this effort was so important to us. We all bowed our heads as Mark led us in prayer to bless the home. it was a great moment. The ceremony culminated with the Cecilia cutting the ribbon and being handed the keys to her new home hanging on a brand new Porsche key chain! Then the party started! We headed to the Hunt Club Farm in Virginia Beach where we enjoyed great food from Mission BBQ and threw back a few cold beers and warm wine. We were fortunate to have rose Ann novotnak, our zone 2 rep, and her husband John make the trip from their home in Pennsylvania to celebrate with us. last but not least, we would like to thank every member that put their trust in us to make this dream happen. Whether you donated money, were hands-on with nail guns (in cold weather), provided advice or were just supportive of the project from start to finish – you made it happen. Also our sponsors who didn’t do just the bare minimum; they upgraded the appliances, paint and flooring and donated a very valuable demolition of the previous house. We can’t thank you enough! Pam was a demon with the nail gun

We did it!! The First Settlers region rocks!!

Michelle & Jeff were a great team

FSR Western Area Spring Fun Run

Submitted by Vince Canepa, Activity Chairman May 18th was perfect for our Western Area Springtime Fun run. Our starting point, the regency Square Mall in Henrico, hosts a bi-weekly Cars and Coffee event. Many of the participants came early to browse the eclectic gathering. you will always something different at these events. i’m always amazed by the size of the 50’s and 60’s American full-size cars. As a teenager working in my uncle’s lincoln-Mercury dealership i frequently found myself driving those big bombs, picking up or delivering customer cars. They seemed normal sized then – not so much these days! Around 11:00am about 29 folks from First Settlers and Shenandoah gathered for the start of our 70mile drive to Tappahannock on the rappahannock river. Things were going swimmingly until someone decided to park a seemingly miles long freight train across our path. After a bit of head scratching our tour leader, dave Wallace, and his team found a route over the tracks and we resumed our enjoyment of the roads and scenery to the north and east of the Virginia Capital. i’ve made several fun runs through the region over the past few years and, thanks to our volunteers that put these events together we always find new twisty roads that are located a reasonable distance from Virginia’s fifth most populous city. The drive ended at lowery's Seafood restaurant, a Tappahannock icon that has been family owned and operated for over 75 years. i would like to thank dave and nancy Wallace for preparing and hosting this event. And thank you to all the folks that attended.

it was fun

meeting all of you and spending the afternoon enjoying our Porsches in the environment in which they thrive.

Adding a bit of SOUL to my 991.1 S Cab Article and Photos submitted by Mark early One of the first things i did when i bought my 2013 Cab S in 2015 was to go from the stock Porsche exhaust to the Porsche Performance exhaust. i really like the difference it made and considered it a very worthwhile investment. However, i longed for a deeper, richer sound -- especially under hard acceleration. After spending countless hours researching options via personal discussions, the Porsche forums, and the internet i decided that the system build by Soul Performance Products sounded very intriguing. i got in contact with Soul PP and spoke to John gaydos. (i guess i should add that over my 60 years of driving i have replaced quite a few exhaust components – but never the entire system before – and never at anywhere near the cost of what this was going to be. in terms of Porsche cars, i did a cat-back on my 2006 Cayman S and my 2013 Boxster S – both of which were nice but both had a bit of an irritable resonance problem.) John was a quite knowledgeable and answered all of my questions. Since the general opinion from a lot of folks was that Soul made a very good product, i signed up for the new long tube headers with the hi-flow 200 cell cats and the new valved exhaust. i really liked the fact that their valved exhaust used the most efficient flow when the valves were open – instead of when they were closed. i was also hopeful that their Helmholtz tubes would improve the sound and help reduce the tendency to “drone”. My primary purpose in the whole endeavor was to pick up an improved exhaust note – deeper, louder of course, a bit of a rumble, and just more in line with the performance aspect of the flat six engine. Of course, i was also hoping for some performance gains but that was not the main focus of my quest. Before i get to the actual install i’ll jump to the “end” and just say that i absolutely lOVe the result of the change. The sound is everything i hoped it would be and then some. With the valves

closed it is just a bit deeper sounding than the PSe and nO “drone” – just like the PSe. With the valves open it sounds like a beast! i was freaking awesome when i opened the valves and dropped to 4th gear at 60 in the Baltimore Tunnel! i THinK it is a bit more responsive, but as most of you know the 3.8 S is pretty darn responsive “out of the box” – so i would be hard-pressed to prove any significant difference on the 300-mile drive home on i95. i got to Soul PP at a little before 7am on Tuesday, March 26th and the place was lots of grinding, welding, hopping. measuring and polishing going on – everyone looked like they were enjoying what they were doing and i knew that i had come to the right place. "They quickly checked in my car and got to work." "All of my new parts were carefully lined up waiting for me to get there." "got the car on the lift and started the process of removing the existing system." "For some reason Porsche has reduced the size of the outlet on one side of the dual tip and we decided to take it out to provide about another inch diameter to the opening." "The installation of the new headers and the new valved exhaust was quickly accomplished by an expert installer – and the fact that the fitment of the new system was fantastic." Soul PP was in the process of creating a new chromed dual wall, dual tip for this application and the timing worked out that they were installed (temporarily) on my car to make sure they would work and for some photo work. i really liked the look but John said they had not even figured out what their cost was, so he had no idea on selling price. i really liked the way they looked – but totally torn between the chrome or a possible matte black. i have to say that everyone i met at Soul PP was fantastic. John and the rest of the team are definitely “performance car people” that have an enthusiasm for what they are doing and are totally professional in every aspect of their work. The attention to detail in the product, the thought process that went into it, the care and efficiency of the installation were all fantastic to see and experience. Obviously, i am a fan of Soul PP at this point. (continued on page 16)

(continued from page 15) SOUl . . .

• driving on some back roads around town where i could ignore social norms and let the car “stretch it legs”, it sure seems like it has a lot more acceleration in the mid and upper rpm range – i guess there is a slight chance that is just due to the awesomesound and that is influencing my sense of speed – for whatever reason it sure seems a lot more responsive running it at max shift points.

Some random thoughts about the system on the drive home: • it was really hard not to stomp on the gas so i could hear the great sound • it was slightly louder / deeper than PSe with the valves closed at normal (meaning social accepted) driving speeds / acceleration but not “bad” and -as i said earlier – no drone

Whether or not i gained any hp out of this is certainly open – especially since my efforts to document a before and after on the dyno was a

• At freeway speed, with the valves open and not on cruise control it seemed fine – more gas, more noise – just what i would expect

cluster you know what. However, i can definitely say that the “sounds” are exactly what i was looking for (actually a bit better than i had hoped), so that makes the whole endeavor totally worthwhile from my point of

• With valves open, at 2,000 rpm (75mph) and on cruise control the resonance does start to get a bit noticeable – it seemed that the cruise control managing the acceleration made it worse – it was easy to fix – just close the valves and everything was the same as it was before the conversion

view.

i have always loved the responsiveness of this flat 6 3.8 and now i have the same feelings about the aural symphony that goes with the performance.

• Bottom line – basically the same as PSe with valves closed … and way – way – way better than PSe with the valves open

Letter from the editor . . .

in terms of the new long tube high flow headers over the stock headers:

I want to thank all of the contributors in this issue for sharing • i know that the headers helped the sound quality a lot

• On the drive home on the freeway driving at socially acceptable speeds / acceleration, i can’t unequivocally say that i noticed a big difference in performance – the car always seemed quite quick to me “out of the box” – especially with the Softronic tune – and while i accept the fact that the headers may have increased the hp, i just could not tell that there was a big improvement

information. Feel free to call me anytime and send articles and photos. If you want to add an advertisement, it is possible. Articles need to be less than 1000 words, less if you want to include photos. If it is a feature article (2 pages), we can talk.

appreciate your enthusiasm and support. The next HO Articles and Photos will be due September 9th to be turned in by September 13th to the printer. Keep them coming. Thank you, thank you, thank you. You are great!! I love this job as Editor.

Where Do New Members Come From Ken Thomas Membership Chair Okay, i know you’re not supposed to end a sentence with a preposition, but i didn’t like the other title options for this article. When a new member joins PCA, the staff at HQ asks questions to determine what the key driver (pun intended) was in the decision to join. listed below is a recent report from PCA ranking the referral sources given for the week. i thought you might like to see this information as it drives (pun again) a few key points.
