From the President Melinda Cagle i am excited to begin 2019 as President of the First Settlers region. While early in the year, the activities calendar is packed with many of our favorite events plus some new ones. Checkered Flag Porsche in Virginia Beach and euroclassics Porsche in richmond are sponsoring tech sessions this year. More fun runs will originate from the richmond area. other events are in the planning stages. you can find the latest events calendar in this newsletter, on our website fsrpca.org, or in the weekly FSr e-news. this year we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the First Settlers region. the FSR President Melinda Cagle “richmond region” was chartered 22 April, 1959 and renamed First Settlers in 1964. the Ho will feature articles throughout the year reflecting on our past. Special exhibits and features throughout the year will provide opportunities to reflect on the Club’s history. the Porsche Club of America was founded to further and promote these six objectives: • • • •
• •
the highest standards of courtesy and safety on the roads; the enjoyment and sharing of good will and fellowship engendered by owning a Porsche and engaging in such social or other events as may be agreeable to the membership; the maintenance of the highest standards of operation and performance of the marque by sharing and exchanging technical and mechanical information; the establishment and maintenance of mutually beneficial relationships with Porsche works, dealers, and other service sources to the end that the marque shall prosper and continue to enjoy its unique leadership and position in sports car annals; the interchange of ideas and suggestions with other Porsche Clubs throughout the world and in such cooperation as may be desirable; the establishment of such mutually cooperative relationships with other Sports Car Clubs as be desirable.
My goal for 2019 is to rediscover our region’s past while looking forward to the future. our founding members drove the 356. today our members drive coupes, cabriolets, sport utility vehicles, and sport sedans. the future promises more hybrid and electric vehicles as Porsche is committed to 50% mix of battery-electric vehicles by 2025. How is the First Settlers region performing according to the six objectives? What can First Settlers region do to increase your enjoyment of your Club and your Porsche? this Spring, you will receive instructions for participating in a short region-wide survey to help us chart our future. We currently have a packed calendar of well attended events. Are there ways we can improve? there are approximately 700 households in the Club. i would love to hear from you all. Looking forward to seeing you and your Porsche soon,

"I think my favorite Porsche would be the 906 from 1966. My friend Weldon let me drive his about 1975. It is one of those things that you just never forget. My perfect Porsche day is turning that left-hand side ignition key and hearing the twin pipe sport muffler bark!"
SPOTLIGHT Andrew Chisholm, Member Spotlight Photos: Courtesy of Andrew Chisholm
Andrew Chisholm lives in Virginia Beach, his family moved here in 1962. He joined FSR/PCA in November of 1969 When asked how did you become president, Andrew answers, " I received a phone call one evening advising me that it was "my turn" to be regional president of the First Settlers Region. I ran unopposed and won the election. My first year as president of FSR was 1974."
About FSR, "FSR has evolved from being a Porsche car club to the modern civic organization it is today. I am especially proud of how FSR contributes to the local community in so many ways. What keeps me in FSR/PCA? "You know, it is not just the cars, it is the people." Andrew S. Chisholm "Thank you, Andrew"
(Editor's note: Andrew also served as FSR President 1990 & 1991)
Our Habitat House is finished!!!
Andrew tells us, " I drive the newest Porsche that I have ever owned, a 1973 Porsche 911E, purchased in 1988. I still own my original 1969 Porsche 912, purchased while I was in the US Army. Also, a 1970 911T, back in 1984. One of my earliest Porsche/PCA memories was the 1971 Porsche Parade in Sun Valley, ID. I drove there from Virginia Beach. I had no idea what I was doing, but that event lit my Porsche fire forever. I was hooked."
Be on the Lookout for our Special Ho edition coming in April, reviewing the Steps, Sponsors, and Helpers making this house possible!!!
Favorite Porsche event? Probably one of those 36 Porsche Parades that I have attended. Favorite personal car related story? Winning my class at the 1974 Porsche Parade autocross at Pocono, Pa. It is a great story. HorizontALLy oPPoSeD

Apple Strudel w/ Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry Submitted by Kathy Kent (a regular on the Kent Menu)
1 egg 1 tbsp water 2 tbsp sugar 3 tbsp flour 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon 2 large granny Smith Apples, peeled and sliced 2 tbsp raisins (and 1/4 cup nuts if desired) 1 sheet Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry 1 tbsp confectioner's sugar Heat the oven to 375*. Beat the egg and water in a small bowl with a fork. Stir the granulated sugar, 1 tbsp flour and cinnamon in a medium bowl Add the apples & raisins(nuts) and toss to coat. Sprinkle the remaining flour on the work surface. Unfold the pastry sheet on the work surface. roll the pastry sheet into a 16 x 12 inch rectangle. Spoon the apple mixture onto the bottom half of the pastry sheet to within 1 inch of the edge. roll up like a jelly roll. Place seam-side down onto a baking sheet (this will help keep it from unrolling during baking). tuck the ends under to seal. Brush the pastry with the egg mixture. Cut 4 deep slits in the top of the pastry. Bake for 35 minutes or until the pastry is golden brown. Let the pastry cool on the baking sheet on a wire rack for 20 minutes. Sprinkle with the confectioners' sugar, if desired.

Seven Cool Facts About the Porsche 928 By: Chris Chin | Automobile Magazine, January 2018 Submitted by Ken thomas
Last year, as the second-generation Porsche Panamera began arriving in dealer showrooms, its spiritual predecessor, the Porsche 928, celebrated its 40thanniversary. the 928 is a unique car that was in many ways significantly ahead of its time. even today, it invokes many oohs and aahs when one rolls through town. And for many, it served as a poster child for many people’s dream car, particularly for those who grew up in the 1980s. Here are seven facts we learned about the original Porsche 928 and what made it special, aside from being Porsche’s second-ever frontengine vehicle and the company’s first-ever front-engine V-8 automobile.
1. It was originally meant to replace the 911 By the mid-late 1970s, Porsche was increasingly seeing the 911 as a car that was nearing the end of its evolution. the 928, along with the entry-level 924, were supposed to herald a new era of front-engine, rear-drive Porsches that would feel easier and more modern to drive. in fact, the 928 was seen as the brand’s flagship product, ahead of even the mighty 930-series 911 turbo. the 911 is still extant in the lineup today, while 928 ended production more than two decades ago.
2. It was the fastest naturally aspirated production vehicle in the world on August 7, 1986, famed American iMSA racer Al Holbert took a pre-production 928 S4 to the Bonneville Salt Flats for a few sprints. He went on to clock in the flying mile at 171.110 mph and the flying kilometer at 171.926 km/h, making the 1987 928 S4 the fastest naturally aspirated production car in the world at the time. Later that year, the 928 S4 supposedly went on to run a 180-plus mph top speed at italy’s famed nardo top-speed ring.
3. It was a Hollywood star the 928’s futuristic design and status as a luxury vehicle for the jet set crowd garnered it a fair share of screen time. it was the star car in several classic big screen hits of the 1980s, including “Weird Science,” “risky Business,” and “Scarface,” which is also one of the reasons why the Porsche 928 became an icon and an enthusiast’s dream.
4. The GTS is most desirable variant offered from 1993 to 1995, the 928 gtS received a revised V-8 that was bored and stroked to a 5.4-liter displacement, equipped with the latest four-valve-per-cylinder heads, and mated to a new four-speed automatic. the result was an output of 345 horsepower and a 0-60mph time below 6 seconds. With 928 sales already at their lowest point due to the model’s age, Porsche only sent 407 examples of the 928 gtS to the U.S.
5. Most 928s were equipped with automatics it might seem backwards to put an automatic in a Porsche, especially one from the 1970s or 1980s. But the manual in the 928 was not at all a shining moment. in the example i drove, it functioned as if it was lifted from a Volkswagen Bus instead of a Porsche thoroughbred. even when the 928 was new, the automotive press noted that its manual was not a particular strong suit and, as a result, the automatic was the way to go. Further reason to delete the third pedal is to emphasize the effortless, luxury grand touring persona of the 928.
6. It makes extensive use of aluminum and galvanized steel the Porsche 928 was one of the earliest production cars to utilize aluminum throughout its construction. Along with the weight reduction, aluminum also means the Porsche 928 is resistant to rust. Additionally, rust-resistant galvanized steel was employed for the floor pans, roof, and rear quarter panels. there’s actually a saying in Porsche enthusiast land that if you see a 928 with extensive rust, run in the other direction as something really bad clearly happened during its life.
7. The 928 set the stage for early passive rear-wheel steering systems not only does the 928’s transmission sit at the back for better weight distribution, but the transaxle is home to one of the 928’s signature features: the famed Weissach axle. named after the Porsche r & D center where it was created, this rear axle design is bespoke to the 928. its purpose is to increase the amount of cornering grip and stability by eliminating the toe-out tendency caused by mid-corner throttle lifts. this translates into incredible mid-corner composure and grip and with the 928’s 50/50 weight distribution, made it not just fast in a straight line but in the corners as well. the Weissach axle is one of the earliest passive rear-wheel steering setups and a precursor to active rear-wheel and even four-wheel steering systems.
There are nine 928 owners in First Settlers Region.

Sixty Years of Porsche Passion in Virginia
Early region reports offer some clues as to how the PCA measured the success of a region as well as how the Richmond Region performed.
Article by Melinda Cagle
The 1961 Region Report highlights the exclusivity of the Club. The Region listed 25 active members with an average attendance of 10-15 for meetings and 8-10 for events. Meetings are held every two months but not regularly. The Club offered picnics, dinner meetings, and technical sessions. All three of the officers lived in Richmond. We also see our first female officer, Mrs. Evelyn Applewhite, who serves as Treasurer, Secretary, and the official mailing address for the Club.
The year is 1959. Alaska and Hawaii become our 49th and 50th states. The Barbi doll makes its debut. NASA introduces its first astronaut class known as the Mercury Seven. The United States launches the first weather satellite into space. Abroad, Fidel Castro comes to power in Cuba. In Britain, the iconic Mini is born. In Richmond, the capital of Virginia, a group of Porsche enthusiasts organize and petition to become part of the Porsche Club of America (PCA). The original charter dated April 22, 1959 lists the name as the Richmond Region.
In 1963, the Club reported the same 25 members but attendance averaged 12 for meetings and events. That year the Club held a picnic, two tours, and a concours.
Porsche ownership in 1959 was quite rare. Consider just nine years earlier (1950), the first Porsche 356 was imported into New York City by Max Hoffman. Four years earlier (1955), the Porsche Club of America was founded. Just three years earlier (1956), Porsche AG celebrated the 10,000th Porsche 356 rolling off the assembly line. The Richmond Region was significantly smaller in territory than the First Settlers Region of today. Records indicate members from outside this defined territory participated in Club events and served as officers – a practice that continues to today. When did the name change to First Settlers? While the exact date of the name change is uncertain, club documents provided to the PCA indicate it was between May 15, 1964 and December 31, 1964.

enthusiasts in the western part of Virginia met in Roanoke to begin the process which led to the charter of the Blue Ridge Region. In 1995, Porsche enthusiasts, many of whom were active FSR members, met in Waynesboro to begin the process to form a new region. Shenandoah was chartered August 6, 1995 to serve Central Virginia. With each new charter, FSR said farewell to part of its family. Figure 3. The 1964 Region Report for First Settlers. In 1999, FSR expanded again to the current boundaries that exiss today - from Fredericksburg south to the North Carolina line and from Farmville east to Chincoteague. In addition to Blue Ridge and Shenandoah, First Settlers shares boundaries with Potomac, Chesapeake, and Hurricane regions.
Figure 3. The 1964 Region Report for First Settlers.
Figure 4. The First Settlers Region today.
By the start of 1965, the Region changed its name and expanded. All three of the officers lived in Norfolk. The membership total remained flat at 25 members. The Club noted plans to publish a newsletter that year and a contest was on to name it. We also see our second female officer, Mrs. Jean Hughes, who also serves as Treasurer and Secretary.
The First Settlers Region has grown to over 700 households. Our members own the greatest variety of cars than ever in its history. One thing has remained true, Club membership is the best option for Porsche owners to get the most enjoyment from their cars.
The 1967 Region Report is the first time the board lists the same six officer format FSR uses today: President, Eastern Vice President, Western Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Activities Chairman. The membership grew to 29. This is also the first time PCA is taking attendance for its board meetings. Over the years, Porsche enthusiasts throughout the state began to organize new regions to make it easier for members to participate in events. In 1980, Porsche

We Had a New Year's Party in January!!! Article by Vince Canepa, Activities Chairman / Photos: Courtesy of Mike Ball
this year’s FSr new year Party was held January 19th, 2019 at the Kingsmill resort in Williamsburg. there was a nice turnout for an evening of fun, camaraderie, great food and live jazz and dancing to the sounds of the very talented and versatile musicians of “Limelight”. even the weather cooperated, with the rain holding off well into the night on Saturday ; Sunday morning dawned cloudy – it can’t always be perfect. As has become customary, the new slate of officers was introduced with Melinda Cagle as President, Phil grandfield as eastern Vice President, ed Merry as Secretary, John Schwaebler as treasurer and Vince Canepa as Activities officer. the now famous “White elephant Auction” brought out an interesting collection of items and an enthusiastic group of bidders. nearly $1,000 was raised for the FSr charity efforts, a truly wonderful way to kick off the new year. thanks to everyone for their generosity!
Pam Michaels, Valerie Dru and Paul Oberdorfer
Kathy Kent rolled out another of her fun “mixers”. this year was a matching game; the subject was german road signs. each participant received a slip with a picture of a sign and another slip – this one had the meaning of a sign. the goal was to match your sign with it’s meaning. it seemed everyone had a good time trying to find their match! Who knew the germans have so many signs! eight pages worth. Some are truly amusing. thanks Kathy! As with all FSr events, this one could not be a success without the voluntary contributions of several FSr members. Jerry and Kathy Kent did the table decorations, Phil and Josie grandfield set up the White elephant Auction, george and Pam Michaels arranged for the band and printed the programs and Vince Canepa made the “tent” cards and built the video. thank you!
