charities in this awesome event!

the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach is a spectacular place to display beautiful classic and modern cars next to vintage warplanes. show your car or come support this event as a spectator. either method of participation is a blast. Moving on from october into november, we’ll start out the month with our popular breakfast get-togethers. since we had the open Board Meeting in lieu of the breakfasts in october, it will be fun to get back together at our usual hangouts. Victoria’s is the place in Williamsburg on the first saturday of the month. or you can choose between Joe’s inn if you’re in the Richmond area, or Pop’s diner if you’re near Chesapeake on the second saturday of the month. our really big charity event for the southeastern Virginia Foodbank also happens in november. We’ll stuff our trunks, our cargo areas, and our passenger cabins with thanksgiving food donations. things start out at Checkered Flag Porsche in Virginia Beach with refreshments, socializing and a food weigh in. then we’ll head to Pembroke Mall to unload our vehicles at the “Mayflower Marathon” collection site. Josie grandfield, our Charity Chairperson, works hard on this event and we have more cars and more people participate every year! We’ll have our breakfast meetings as usual in december. And before you know it we’re at the holidays! so mark your calendars for the 2018 new year Party on January 13th at the Kingsmill Resort in Williamsburg. don’t forget, you can always check out what’s happening, or register for any of our events, at fsrpca.motorsportreg.com. MERRY MEMORIES: WELCOMING A NEW PORSCHE

welcomed a new Porsche Boxster s into our family. lee and i have been looking for suitable Porsches: well maintained, wonderful to drive and within our price range. We almost thought we had a 1999 red base Boxster. But i had been wisely advised to pay for a pre-purchase inspection (PPi). so we took this red Boxster to RaceWerks for a PPi. it looked good to us on the outside as novice buyers. But once on a lift, John pointed out major deficiencies. What initially looked good was in fact a dog. discouraged, we started to leave. then John Kopp pointed out a flier on his bulletin board. We followed up on this lead. skip to saturday, 12 november 2016. We went to see a 2001 yellow Boxster s owned by a PCA member, steve newton. to describe how well steve cared for this car is an understatement. After a brief drive, lee decided to go immediately to the Credit Union as it was still open. the loan officer was a car-nut as well who helped speed the financial process along.

by ed Merry & lee eason How do you welcome a new Porsche into your family? We all know a Porsche is more than "just another car." some of us have become quite attached to our Porsches. somewhat like family, they become endearing to us. Me included.

so how does a person welcome a new Porsche into their family? i can think of at least 3 ways. First, some want to show the new car off. i've done that. Recently, lee eason, my step-son, welcomed a new Porsche as well. He is properly proud of his new Boxster and he loved showing it off. But other later that afternoon we returned to steve folk welcome a Porsche differently. the newton's home with money in hand. there was second way comes from being excited one condition. steve newton insisted that we about the quality and build of the car. care for this yellow Boxster s in the same loving they read up on the car, explore its manner that he did for so many years. this we features and in some cases carefully promised to do. steve reluctantly gave us the disassemble parts of the car to explore lee in his new yellow Boxster! keys, a box of extra parts, and car cover. then what is not easily seen. such people lee drove his new Boxster s home. lee was the happiest i have ever look carefully inside and marvel at the engineering and workmanship seen him in the 5 years of our relationship. He now has a disease, in our cars. i have done that as well, but not so deeply that i cannot common to many Porsche owners, called "perma-grin." this disease properly reassemble our Porsche again. occurs when your face is sore from repeated smiles and grins. i have this disease also. so now we have a speed yellow Boxster in our the third way comes from driving the Porsche. this is how we

driveway but not yet properly "welcomed." But how did we properly welcome a new Porsche into the family. Well, dr. Ferry Porsche said: "My cars are made to be driven.". so we planned a road trip for later in the week. As some of you know, i highlight VA state maps and give them out often. the highlights are twisty and very twisty, lightly traveled roads that i have found. so with such a highlighted map we drove two wonderful days, covered about 670 total miles of which over 200 were suitable twisty. A PRoPeR WelCoMe indeed!!! let me describe our route. Having a Virginia state Road Map handy will help make this more meaningful. twisty Road number 1: VA810 from Crozet to stanardsville goes along the eastern slope of the Blue Ridge. the segment from White Hall to Us-33 is especially good. i had not recently driven this road and had forgotten how wonderful it is after you leave the congestion around Charlottesville. the day was quite warm for midnovember and suitable for topless Boxster driving. i led and lee followed.

twisty Road #1 - VA-810 Crozet to stanardsville.

After VA-810, we took Us-33 to the skyline drive. Us-33 as it climbs up the Blue Ridge is also quite twisty with three lanes allowing us to pass slower traffic. then we drove the skyline drive north for about 45 miles. Along the way we stopped and swapped cars at Big Meadows for a much needed break. Along the way, we saw deer, turkeys and several bears. one bear crossed the road right in front of lee. Unfortunately, we did not get a picture of this bear either on our phones or my video. twisty toad number 2: VA-615 and VA-675 follows the eastern flank of Massanutten Mountain. After spending the night in downtown luray, VA, we left the next morning after

twisty Road #2 - Massanutten Mountain the school busses had done their job. Just west on Us-211 from luray is the egypt Bend Road (VA-615) which is pretty twisty as it follows the west bank of the south Fork of the shenandoah River. then several miles later, we turn left on VA-675 which steeply climbs up the eastern saddle of the mountain with wonderful switchbacks. We stopped at the summit overlook and then started down into the valley between the saddles of Massanutten mountain. i really like this road when the leaves are off the trees and you can see further.

twisty Road number 3: At the bottom of the valley, we continued straight on what became VA-678 or the Fort Valley Road heading north. VA-678 is not as twisty as climbing up the mountain, but is about 9 miles of good, lightly traveled twisty road toward strasburg. We stopped at the elizabeth Furnace picnic area and swapped cars again.

earlier in our drive, i would lead as i knew the roads and stop at each intersection to let lee catch up. this made sense as he was unfamiliar with these roads and just learning his new Porsche. At first, i would wait quite a while and then lee would arrive. But as we drove more and more, the wait became less and less. soon i'd stop, check for traffic and lee was right behind me.

As we headed south back toward VA-675 on VA-678, lee started out first. i had to stop and re-start my video camera. now with the camera activated, i thought i would catch up with lee quickly. this was not so. i was really pressing along and finally caught up with lee about 5 miles down the road. Perma-grin was very evident when we stopped at the VA 675 junction.

twisty Road number 4: VA 675now goes west to edinburgh VA and i-81. At the junction of VA-675 and VA-678, we headed west over the western saddle of Massanutten mountain. this segment has fewer switchbacks but is suitable very twisty. We stopped in edinburgh for a break and gas. several locals stopped and talked with us. Apparently a bright yellow and a bright blue Porsche catches the eye quite nicely. one local described the twisties of VA-675 from i-81 to the Wolf gap picnic area. After some enthusiastic twisty road discussion, we learned he was a retired police officer. oh no!! twisty Road number 5: VA 675 (Wolf gap Road) from i-81 to the West VA border. SPOKANE PORSCHE PARADE: Early Event Experiences August 2017 by ed Merry this article covers ed and Brenda Merry's experiences from saturday, 15 July through Monday, 17 July at the recent spokane Porsche Parade. We had a rental car and left tuesday morning for glacier national Park. thus we missed the tsd rally, autocross, various tours, and banquets. We also missed the saturday night Victory Banquet where First settlers' Region again received two awards: Charity and Web-site. We arrived at the grand Hotel Friday evening and immediately found a beautiful blue 356 at the entrance as well as a 918 spyder just inside. After dinner we went into the downstairs garage and found lots of people already preparing their Porsches for the Concours. Brenda and ed volunteered to help at the Welcome tent on saturday afternoon and sunday morning. it was led by liz Reid with whom we had worked in savannah in 2011 and Monterey in 2014. soon we had ice chests filled with cold water and bags of snacks to give to arriving Porsches. Unlike earlier Parades, traffic leaving the interstate had to cross several lanes to reach the Welcome tent. some people totally missed us, others waved as they drove straight to the grand Hotel. so one of our group would stand in the median and wave a sign just like the liberty tax people do each spring. that effort brought in quite a few Porsches. thus we welcomed quite a few cars. including cars from Alaska and Hawaii. the Hawaii group brought us chocolate macadamia nut candy to share. yummy. sunday night was the Pirelli Welcome Banquet and the FsR folk gathered together. good food, a german music band and good conversation. i believe we had at least 8 FsR members at the Parade. Unfortunately, we did not get any of the smaller door prizes or the set of Pirelli tires. Monday was the first of three competitive Parade events -- the Concours d' elegance. each of the competitive events (Concours, tsd Rally and Autocross) have a cadre of serious competitors. Ask george Michaels how serious the Parade Concours is. For the Concours, a team would inspect each entrant for a fixed period of time. each team was very familiar with the type of Porsches they were evaluating. i enjoyed watch the team evaluate a 1974 Carrera RsR. While there were many really neat cars, i especially liked these two. the first was a 1950s 550 spyder with the aluminum body shined to a high gloss. note the reflection of the spokane clock tower in the hood of the 550. the second car was a beautiful blue turbo s with a similar reflection. Finally, i have included some pictures of speed yellow Boxsters for my son lee. looking back, we had a wonderful time and met some old friends. For once, we restricted ourselves to only a few activities and were not exhausted. newbies to the Parade often tend to overdo the many available activities and end the week exhausted. the 2018 Parade is closer in Missouri and i understand 2019 will be in Florida. We could more easily drive to these. Attending a Porsche parade in a rented toyota Corolla is just not as much fun. simply this time, ed did not want to drive across the great Plains of America twice. so for us, 2018 and 2019 should be better. All and all, it was wonderful. drive safe.

VA-39 is sweet. lee had never driven any of these roads and was now severely diseased with "perma-grin". goshen Pass is very scenic and is popular when the water level is much higher. Western Virginia was in the midst of a drought and the river was mostly rocks with several deep pools. A few people had stopped along the way mostly for the scenery. near the town of goshen, we stopped and swapped cars again and back tracked east on VA-39, this time going all the way to i64 just west of lexington, VA. little traffic and one sweet tide. VA-39 is definitely very twisty.

areas. But after we crossed VA-42, the best twisties lay ahead. We stopped for a break at the Wolf gap Recreation Area. Again, several men came over and started talking and admiring our cars. Hmmm. i think i see a pattern here. For the record, VA-675 turns to gravel in West VA so we headed back down from the Allegheny Mountains to i-81. the next part of our proper welcoming of the new Boxster s was simply motoring down i-81 for about 70 miles. interestingly, both cars are comfortable long distance travelers with good highway gas mileage (About 25 MPg for the Boxster 6 speed, about 31 MPg for the Cayman 7 speed PdK).

twisty Road #6 - Raphine to Brownsburg. Friday is drawing to a close and we debated what final roads to drive. But because of the late hour we started north on i-81 expecting to just motor back home. But near Fairfield, VA, mile post 200, there was congestion and an accident on i-81. so we crept to an exit toward Us-11. now with an early return not feasible, we decided on one last twisty road.

twisty Road number 6. VA-606 goes from Raphine to VA-252 at Brownsburg then to VA-39 and west through goshen Pass and return toward lexington. this is the western third of my all time favorite mountain twisty road, VA-56. leaving i-81 at the Raphine exit and after getting gas and lunch, we headed west on VA-606. lightly traveled and with several neat twisty segments, we finally arrived at Brownsburg on VA-252. going south, VA 252 is twisty but not very twisty. then we went west on VA-39 toward the goshen Pass where the Maury River passes through the mountains.

twisty Road number 7. VA-56 goes from Vesuvius east to the Blue Ridge Parkway. then we took the Parkway north to i-64. Usually i drive this wonderful very twisty road from east to west and usually are going downhill from the Parkway to Vesuvius. But this time, lee and i went east. once away from Vesuvius, it is almost like a hill climb road. twist after twist after twist. in ed's opinion, VA-56 from Massie's Mill to
