From the President Jason Horner FSR Members,
Spring is finally here though the temperature may make you think otherwise the pollen on our cars is confirmation that it is really spring. It was great seeing everyone who was able to attend our spring charity event. If you were unable to attend any of the weekend’s events, you truly missed out. Again this weekend brought into question if spring were truly here, the Friday night social greeted us with windy and cool conditions, but then Saturday was a complete 180, sunny with not a cloud in the sky. It was a lovely day to park 38 Porsches on the boardwalk in Virginia Beach.
I would again like to thank Bud and Boolie Syme for hosting the social event to kick off First Settlers Regions charity weekend and for having Chad, from the Boy’s Home, drive the 10-12 hour round trip to present everyone in attendance a touching five minute speech about one of our sponsored charities. A huge thanks goes to Josie Grandfield, her team, and everyone else involved for providing us with a fantastic, fun filled weekend. I cannot thank enough all our sponsors and those that donated items for our silent auction. Congratulations to all the gimmick rally winners, shine and show winners, the word challenge winner, and those who walked away with some fantastic items that were up for auction.
(“Jason Horner - President, First Settlers Region”)
In the end First Settlers Region raised over $12,000.00 for our sponsored charities.
I recently attended the zone 2 Presidents meeting in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Not to bore you with everything that was discussed but here are the highlights: as of April 15, 2015, Porsche Club of America is made up of 13 zones with 143 regions, with 69,500 primary members (First Settlers is in zone 2 which has 10 of those regions). Fifty percent of all the vehicles that Porsche sells are Cayennes. of all the Macans that are sold, 70% of the buyers are first-time Porsche owners. The hotels in French lick, Indiana where this year’s Parade is being held are sold out due to the great response and that there will be more people in attendance than the local population. Because of the anticipated response, next year’s Parade in Vermont may use a lottery type system like the one used for Hershey in 2005 for the 50th Anniversary Parade.
While in Hershey, Priscilla and I had the opportunity to attend the 38th Annual Hershey Swap Meet. This is the largest Porsche-only swap meet in the world. If this is not on your bucket list of things to do it should at least be placed at the top of your alternative list. First Settlers was not only represented by us being there, but also by Jeff and Jennifer Coston, and Edward Adams.
our calendar is filling up quickly and we have some great events coming up so please come up and take advantage of your membership. Detailed event information and registration for all FSR events can be accessed via our MotorsportReg club page: www.fsrpca.motorsportreg.com. I hope to see many of you at our events and at this year’s parade in French lick, we currently have 14 members going from our Region and 143 members from all of zone 2.
Wishing everyone a safe spring,

Porsche Swap Meet
Just a reminder . . . This note is a reminder that PCA is a large organization with policy and regulations required for the organization to remain viable. Though we have not had any problems within the First Settlers Region there have been problems elsewhere. This article is a reminder that the Porsche Club of America operates under an established Code of Ethics and Conduct.
The Central PA Region of the Porsche Club of America is once again brought its world-famous Porsche-only Swap Meet to Hershey, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, April 19th, 2013. Billed as the largest event of its kind on the planet it typically brings nearly 650 vendors, around 1,000 Porsches, and over 6,000 visitors from all over the world together in Hershey every year. If you’re seeking an obscure Porsche or an obscure part for your Porsche, this is your best chance to find it. Every dealer and Porsche packrat in a 250-mile radius will be bringing their odds and ends for sale or swap. you’ll see exotic Porsches found nowhere this side of Stuttgart, and Porsche personalities ranging from PCA muckety-mucks to (sometimes) celebrities like Jerry Seinfeld. They also feature a People’s Choice Concours, and Sunday autocross, too!

PCA CODE OF ETHICS AND CONDUCT This document is presented to define the standards and ethics to which the organization holds itself, its elected and appointed representatives, its employees, and its members. It supplements but does not replace our established Bylaws and procedures, which are documented elsewhere. The following represents the way we want to be and to do business.

PCA is not a political organization. It exists for the benefit of its members, to further their enjoyment of their cars. In the performance of this mandate, it must operate under the rule of law, adhering to the laws of the various countries and jurisdictions under which it exists. This means that illegal behavior is not tolerated, and that close attention is paid to the requirements of the law in the actions of all involved, national and regional officers, individual members, and those within the national office.
Your one stop for full color and spot printing. You need it in print? We’ll get it done. We also produce a full line of business forms and company communication materials.
PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS Advertising is expensive. Let us help you find ways to put your name in front of your customers 365 days a year. Visit our website . . . you’ll find thousands of products that will help promote your business and get your message out.
Beyond this, we accept the obligation to do what is right. An ethical system is based on the mutual benefit of the involved parties; the corollary of this is that we treat neither fellow members nor non-members in a way that is demeaning, embarrassing, derogatory, or otherwise inappropriate. our natural competitiveness does not extend to taking unfair advantage of others, be they individuals, clubs, or businesses. Actions and words about which there may be some question are undertaken, when possible, only after careful thought and perhaps consultation. Decisions affecting PCA should be either self-obvious or readily explained. Particular attention should be paid to potential conflicts of interest involving special treatment or gifts from individuals or companies possibly hoping to gain something in return. other potential conflicts of interest, in which an officer, employee, or member must weigh his immediate and personal potential for gain against the best interests of PCA, require special thoughtful attention. Transparency in all actions is desirable. Nothing must be allowed to compromise the integrity, credibility, and best interests of PCA in the making of decisions that affect the club. The culture of PCA is founded on doing the right thing to the best of our ability. Without this we lose our self-respect both as an organization and as individuals, a price that we will not pay. Non-adherence to these principles will not be tolerated; behavior or actions damaging to PCA will be dealt with by the established club Bylaws, and may result in permanent loss of membership. company to include service, parts, and helping manage the administrative side of opening a new body shop. Eventually he left for college in central Virginia and would return (“Hans Hohlreider, owner of Auto Haus, talking about restoration with Jeb during holiday Blair”) breaks to help drive purchased vehicles back from Northern Virginia. After completing an internship with Auto Haus and graduating with a degree in Finance, Alex was offered a full time position.
Auto Haus - A Story From Inside the Dealership by Alex Childs Editor’s note: you wouldn’t be reading this newsletter if you weren’t a car guy or gal so you must have at wondered, least to some degree, how the of business (“Fun Run from the Williamsburg breakfast to Auto Haus along the buying and selling Parkway”) cars works. I know I have. I’ve long be intrigued by the business and have considered a second career in the car sales industry. Maybe it could have been my first career since my first after school job was also as a new-car-prepguy at a local car dealership. So when I met Alex Childs at the Auto Haus tech session and learned that he actually gets paid to find the cars that are sold there I had to learn more. Here is his story - as told by Alex - and with a focus on the company he has grown up with. The photos the accompany the article were taken during the Tech Session sponsored by Auto Haus on March 7, 2015. The tour included the showroom and the restoration ship. The level of detail in their work is evident as is the quality of the cars on the display in the showroom. They can also maintain your Porsche!
Initially his job was to manage the wholesale vehicle inventory within Auto Haus. This job entailed traveling to auctions in Atlanta, North Carolina, Fredericksburg, Washington D.C., Pennsylvania and as far as Phoenix. While learning the auction process he traveled with the owner of Auto Haus who gradually taught him how to buy only the best cars at the auction. Alex also learned that considerable time and effort goes in to buying the cars at the auction. The auctions themselves are quite the operation. They can have up to 40 lanes where cars are driven through in front of auctioneers who start the bidding based on a price the seller wants for his cars. The auctions start early in the morning and may have as many as 7,000 cars or as few as 3,000 on any given sale day. The auction registers the cars several days before the sale for authorized buyers to research on a pre-sale list online. once at the auction the buyer must carefully inspect the vehicles before the bidding begins using vehicle history and condition reports and a keen eye along with a paint meter to detect bodywork. Having a strong mechanical knowledge is also critical to acquiring quality cars.
(“Speedster!”)
Twenty years ago Alex and his family were driving down Route 17 and spotted a faded Bahia Red 1972 Porsche 914 with a “For Sale” sign in the window. Soon after finding the 914, Alex purchased it with his dad who drove it home. He would spend many hours of labor as a 15 year old completely rebuilding the engine and preparing the car to be repainted. That car would be a daily driver for the next ten years. It was clear that he had found a love for German cars, particularly Porsche.
Auto Haus takes great pride in the quality of their sales inventory. Every vehicle must pass a stringent 116 point inspection before being offered for sale. Many of the (“Different generations - common interests”) vehicles for sale are purchased through Manheim 'dealer only' auctions from Mercedes, BMW, and Audi financing companies. The majority of the vehicles offered for sale are previously leased and have been regularly maintained by factory dealerships and are typically still under warranty or qualify as good warranty candidates for an after market warranty. New car dealers tend to specialize in new car sales whereas Auto Haus makes it possible for more people to own high quality late model luxury cars offering them at affordable prices.
The only automotive repair business in yorktown were Alex grew up that worked on such cars was Auto Haus. To pursue his interest in German cars, he began working at Auto Haus as an employee in the detail department with first tasks being to sweep the floor and empty garbage cans from the shop. While working full time, and also attending a local college full time, he moved to d i f f e r e n t departments within the (“I wanted to bring this red Cayman home!”)
Driver’s Education Seminar By Phil Grandfield The Driver’s Education Committee sponsored a seminar on April 18th to explain the basics of what this track stuff is all about to some very interested members. Coordinated by Marco Estrada, DE Committee Chair, the event was targeted at answering the range of questions from “What do I need to wear?” to “How do I have to prep my car?”. Tim Ashbridge, Chief Track Instructor, answered those questions and many more. Registration details were covered by Scott Hoffman who as the Registrar has the toughest job on the committee. Bud Syme talked about DE events from the instructor’s perspective and his theme was “This is fun!!”. We were also fortunate to have Alex Bell providing advice from his perspective as the PCA National Driver’s Education Chair. our next DE event is at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) on July 1112. Registration is open and the run groups are filling up but there will always be room for DE Intro Students. All you need is a car (and it doesn’t have to be a Porsche), a driver’s license, a long sleeved cotton shirt, closed toed shoes and a helmet. And we can loan you a helmet. Cost is $50 for one session with an instructor, but be forewarned - you’ll want to come back for more!!

What is your favorite personal car-related story? So maybe not my favorite story, but possibly one of the funniest is when I had to rent a car in New york City and the mystery manager’s special I reserved turned out to be a Town and Country minivan. I’ve always had small cars. Besides the Cayman, I’ve owned a Ford Probe and an Acura Integra, which is still my daily driver. So, picture me driving a minivan for the first time through midtown Manhattan and the lincoln Tunnel to get to my destination in New Jersey. There was a lot of horn honking directed at me that day.

Auto Haus has been selling and servicing most luxury car brands for nearly 25 years while specializing in German makes. The company’s success has led to the recent opening of a second (“914 coming back to life” location in Williamsburg where along with the sales and service of late models they also specialize in the restoration and maintenance of classic automobiles.

Not only does Auto Haus sell the major brands but employs factory trained technicians to service the vehicles as well. A vehicle that has come from an auction sounds like it may be of less desirable quality while in reality the auction is (“Porsche History”) only a central marketplace for dealers to exchange inventory. The quality of vehicles today is very high when compared to that of 20 years ago creating a strong secondary market for reliable used vehicles. Auto Haus specializes in finding vehicles for customers looking for specific models through a service called “i-find”. To use i-find the customer completes a form indicating a first second and third color preference for the exterior and interior color of the car. The customer also indicates all desired options, mileage, and price for the car. of course, once the car is found it must pass the same rigorous in-house inspection before the customer takes delivery.

What’s precious to you is precious to us.
It took us a couple tries to get this event in the history books but it was well worth the wait. The first attempt planed for February was cancelled for the inclement weather proving that were too optimistic about getting back into our cars. The rescheduled date in March was chilly but the roads were clear not only of snow but of traffic too! We meandered through Isle of Wight County, past farms, past the Glider Port at Garner Field and through some small towns. It’s great to know we have some good driving roads in our backyard.

Thanks to Ed Merry for planning the route and to Bret Jacobson and Jason Horner for doing some validation (sound like an excuse to go for a drive!). We started at Benn’s Church near Smithfield and ended up at the Virginia Diner in Wakefield. And, yes, the food was good and we ate too much!

surely Porsche could crib a 6-speed manual from zF that would work well in the application. While I'm not particularly partial to the blatant statement made by the rouge wheels shown here, the Porsche side script does hint at what a revival of the "Clubsport" name could look like. A stripped down interior with GT3 RS style appointments and copious use of alcantara could give the 921 a little of the sporting credit that the CS nomenclature deserves. Perhaps dropping as much as 200 pounds from the weight of the base car, the CS could be powered by the base engine, with an increase in boost to somewhere around 220 horsepower. While all of this is simply conjecture based on a graphic designer's daydream, we can only hope that Porsche is listening. As a former 944 owner, I have to say that I would be waiting outside of my local Porsche dealer waiting to place an order if they announced this car tomorrow. The design is beautiful, the concept not unprecedented, and if Porsche were to look at their own historical sales data, they would easily determine that there is a market for an entry level car with the engine up front. Brownell suggests this could be an “entry-level” Porsche, the 944 reborn, supposing a $40,000 base price, sub-3,000-pound weight, and 190-200 hp. To us, that sounds like a very expensive Subaru BRz with a Porsche crest. Make it more powerful -- say, by dropping in the Panamera's V8 to create a neo-928 -- and you're going toe to toe with the http://www.autoweek.com/article/20140111/carreviews/140119977 Jaguar F-Type coupe. Anywhere in the middle, and you're competing with the Boxster and Cayman. Again, it's all hypothetical. But what do you think? How would you feel about a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive addition to Porsche's model lineup?

to the sponsors of Porsches on the Boardwalk - Spring Charity Event 2015 WE COULDN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU!
Graphic designer Anthony Collard just answered the question that has been asked for nearly 20 years; 'What would a front engine Porsche revival look like?' Since the end of 1995, Porsche has stuck strictly to rear and mid-engine chassis for their sports car lineup. With the end of production of the 968 and 928 GTS in 1995, a piece of Porsche history went into a dormancy, as they no longer had any front-engine sports coupes in their stable. Equally important in the history of Porsche is the 928. The 928 was a car like no other, a GT cruiser that had a lot of V8 grunt. It's been called the ethological predecessor to the Panamera, and all it takes is a quick drive in one to figure out why. With a quiet blast down the Autobahn, or a flat footed pull out of a hairpin corner, the 928 never failed to impress. I'm not sure why, but Mr. Collard has chosen to name his concept design the "921". It is obvious that the 921 incorporates current Porsche design culture, with the rear bumper mimicking that of the current 991 Carrera. The rear hatch visually invokes that of the Cayman, but with a more prolonged trailing edge, leading into a kammback-style design more like that of the 944. The side window and small rear quarter window clearly mimic that of the 928, and works surprisingly well with the new smoother design language. At the front, the headlamps and muscular fender bulge work clearly emulate that of the 918 Spyder, and the front bumper features gorgeous lED fog lamps. I've spent a long time thinking about how this particular car could work, and how it could be positioned. What engines should it have, and what place would it take in the Porsche marketplace? Similar to the 944, I envision this car taking the place as Porsche's entry level vehicle. let's assume for now that the base car can slot in around the $40,000 mark, weigh just under 3000 pounds, and have about 190200 horsepower. With a 200-ish horsepower version of Volkswagen's 1.8 liter turbocharged engine currently being designed to work with the PDK transmission in the base level Macan, this engine and transmission would also work exceedingly well as the entry level 921 motivation. Porsche already has a number of higher power engines that could easily be squeezed between the shock towers of the 921 for higher output versions. The naturally aspirated 3.6 liter V6 currently in the base Panamera could work wonders for this car at 300 horsepower. While increasingly unlikely, as it could cannibalize Carrera sales, The Panamera S/Macan S 3.0 liter V6 Turbo could be installed to create the highest output version, a "921 Turbo", somewhere around 375 horsepower. As the market trends toward automated manuals like Porsche's excellent PDK transaxle, I'm not sure that a new car like this would even be offered with a true manual transmission. on a bargain car like this, it might not even be profitable to design a new longitudinal manual transmission unique to this application. If the market did deem it necessary, however, (Continued on page 11)

Porsches on the Boardwalk - Spring Charity Event 2015 By Phil Grandfield I know I’ve written this before, but if you The Grandfields, Kents and Michaels each missed our “Porsches on the Boardwalk” designed a challenging route with cryptic event on May 2, you really missed a good directions and tough clues. We had a great one. Make that a great one! The weekend time sharing ideas for each route and drove included socializing, driving, competition, them multiple times to make sure we had it eating, drinking and concours-ing on the right. “We don’t want to make it too easy” Virginia Beach boardwalk all in perfect was the often heard refrain. The sun was bright on Saturday morning as the Porsches descended upon the Grandfield’s house for the Gimmick Rally registration. Josie laid out a great spread of quiches (or egg pie - since real men don’t eat quiche), fruit and cakes so that no one left hungry. After the safety meeting and instructions on how to run the Gimmick Rally the drivers and navigators were off. As it turns out, it was fortunate the we provided the address of Blue Pete’s, our lunch destination, and the time for lunch because it’s possible no one would have made it by following the rally instructions.
The evening events were on the second floor of the Hilton overlooking the ocean. We enjoyed great food for the third time that day and were well taken care of by the staff. Dick Trowbridge, the Executive Director of Horizons Hampton Roads, and Debbie Mergi from the Foodbank explained why our support is so important to them.

What is your first Porsche memory? My first memory is actually when I went to the dealership to test drive a Panamera. I liked it because it was different, although I’ve never been a sedan person. yet, somehow I wound up with a Cayman instead.

company to include service, parts, and helping manage the administrative side of opening a new body shop.

Wishing everyone a safe spring,
Jason HoRIzoNTAlly oPPoSED
