Do you have a favorite Porsche? There are too many to choose from. I suppose I am partial to the 991 Carrera S, Carrera Targa, and the Carrera GTS. Although I like our Carrera I would love to own a Carrera S (991). I especially like the external form and the interior layout of the 991’s.

What is your first Porsche memory? The excitement of driving a rented Hyunda Sonata to Annapolis to pick up our car. It was exhilarating and unbelievable that after seeing my first 356 in Florida, as kid, that we were now the owners of a new 911. Quite surreal Wow!

Rick Woolard

My dad as an old Studebaker driver would have been excited as well. He marveled at the speed and handling of the “Turtle Back Cars”. In fact we named ours “Tortuga” in memory of his admiration of the Porsche cars.

Dave Hickey

What is your favorite personal car-related story? on a trip to orlando, Fl about 10 years ago to visit with my family, we rented a Chevrolet HHR. As a part of the ritual we stopped by Perkins Restaurant for something to eat after leaving the orlando Intl Airport. After getting out of the car we could not lock the doors. After spending about ten minutes repeating steps, pressing buttons, holding the door handle and trying to lock the door with the key, we gave up. We figure there must have been something wrong with the locking mechanism or that it was a lot smarter than we were. There was some redemption. The food was good and so was the dessert.

By Ken Thomas First Settlers Region sponsored a volunteer event on March 5th at the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Twenty three enthusiastic and energetic FSR members participated in assembling bags of food for the mobile pantry program and boxes of food for the USDA distribution program. our members were so efficient and productive that we exceeded the production needed. The event also included a tour of the Foodbank and a Q & A. Then we were off to Tap-It local for beer, wine and lunch. During lunch, I was asked by our Charity Chair, Josie Grandfield, “what’s something about the Foodbank that makes it great”? There is no short or easy answer to her question. There are a number of things that make the Foodbank great and worthy of First Settlers support. Here are a few results from the most recent fiscal year that I feel stand out and put the Foodbank in an elite status when compared to many nonprofits: • The Foodbank distributed over 19 million pounds of food to over 182,000 children, seniors and working poor. • 95% of every donation went directly to hunger prevention programs. Continued strong community support in that over 50% of funds came from individual donations and that 79% of all food was donated. • every $10 donated resulted in distribution of up to $60 worth of food. • Almost 6,000 volunteers contributed more than 42,000 hours of work. • Recognition from Charity Navigator as a Four Star organization, its top award. Charity Navigator is a national non-profit watchdog organization.

These are just few highlights of the most recent fiscal year. The FSR members who participate in the Turkeys in the Trunk event each year supporting the Foodbank’s Mayflower Marathon have seen firsthand the Foodbank in action and its high level of community support. Seeing it yourself is great perspective and I encourage all FSR members to sign up for the 2016 Turkeys in the Trunk. Additionally, the Foodbank welcomes individual and groups tours of its facility at 800 Tidewater Drive in Norfolk. Feel free to let me know if you would like a tour. Thanks to all First Settlers Region members for their continuous support of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia. Charity Coordinator’s note from Josie Grandfield: Another thanks to everyone who turned out to support this event. Who would have thought that three hours of work would have gone so fast, been so much fun and been so rewarding! our efforts resulting in packing 400 boxes with USDA provided non-perishable food items. each box contained 11 items designed to make up to 10 meals per box. The boxes are distributed to individuals each week so the 400 boxes we packed will provide 4000 meals to needy families in our community. We also packed 842 “back-pack” meals designed to feed needy kids over the weekend. However, the ingredients are intended to provide meals for the entire family. each kit will make 10 meals so our efforts will result in 8420 meals. our shift lasted about three hours including a guided tour of the facility. The organization is obviously well managed and the logistics involved with running the operation daunting. They have to track food coming in from corporations, grocery stores and individuals, then sort it, pack it and send it back out to the community. The donations are colored coded, sorted into a wide variety of bins and shelves. They also keep track of where the food is delivered so that in the case of recalls they know where to track it down. overall, it is a very impressive operation that our community can be proud of. The trip to Tap It - local was a fun way to finish the day. The fun and chatter continued as we enjoyed a well deserved lunch. What a fun bunch of people! We did learn something else at lunch: did you know you can get a cheese burger with mac-n-cheese on top!!?? Delicious! (at least that’s what Doug said about it......) The Foodbank has a small, lean staff of employees and can only operate with the help of volunteers. I know everyone really enjoyed the experience of the food bank and lunch. We’re ready to do it again. We hope you can join us the next time! Thanks to Ken Thomas for helping to set this up and all the work he does for the Food Bank!

Dominion Raceway Road Course - Course Walk, January 2nd 2016

Happy Anniversary!

by zach loesche

Ken Thomas, Membership Chair

This past Saturday edwin Pardue, General Manager of Dominion Raceway attended the PCA FSR Northern area monthly breakfast. edwin spoke about the current state of construction, tentative scheduled dates for milestones and when motorsport enthusiasts will have access to the facility as spectators and participants. After the breakfast, we were invited to head down to the complex, located just 15 minutes south of Fredericksburg at the Thornburg exit. The road course experienced a little bit of rain construction wash out in some key areas of the track that precluded any driving on track, but we were invited to walk the course, and walk we did. Below are pictures I took with my smartphone. I want to caution anyone looking at these images and drawing concern over safety. There is still a lot of work to be done, including catch fences, Armco, curbing, and berms. Tire bundles will also be placed in key impact areas. So please enjoy the images, but please don’t draw conclusions until we see the final product. edwin assured all present that his staff is working closely with NASA and SCCA, as well as consulting motorsport safety experts on their plans to finalize all placement of safety/retention systems on the course.

The members listed in the table below are celebrating significant membership milestones in 2016. Congratulations to all and thank you for your loyalty to Porsche Club of America and First Settlers Region. your longevity is an indication that you enjoy your membership and all the benefits that are available to you. If you haven’t come out to an event lately, consider joining us for an event in 2016. First Settlers offers many popular events throughout the year with a focus on driving, social and charity activities. Try one of monthly breakfasts. They are very popular. Congratulations again and we hope to see you soon.

Dominion Raceway - Be the first to drive it!

in the two subsequent years of racing. In fact, the only wins that any other car had during 1970 and 1971 in the World Championship racing series were victories by a Ferrari 512S in the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1970 and in 1971, Alfa Romeo with their T33/3 did win three of the World Championship of Makes races.. The reason stated for allowing “production” cars to displace up to 5,000 cc was because the ACo wanted to have other manufacturers participating with their small-scale production models, particularly Ford and lola. Thus, in March 1968 the regulators reduced the number of required production cars for homologation to 25. The design features in these cars were radical and different, an evolution from intense research at the racing department. The highly efficient, horizontally opposed engine of up to 4,955 cc had one of the best horsepower-to-displacement ratios of any car ever built. The tubular chassis was light in weight, and the overall design was extremely aerodynamically efficient, particularly the long-tail version. The long-tail, however, was hard to manage for some drivers, and it became obvious that there were advantages to the short-tail as well, exclusive of top speed. The long-tails were made specifically for high-speed straights at le Mans, where in competition they achieved almost 240 miles per hour. only five long-tail chassis were made (910-040 to 910-044, all in 1970). The museum’s car, 917-043, has an exciting history. When it first appeared it was painted purple with random, psychedelic markings. After it qualified first, these markings were further decorated with green and white edging all over the purple background. The livery is the reason why this particular 917 is known as the “Hippy Car”. Kauhsen and Gérard larrousse were chosen to drive the car in the 1970 le Mans 24-hour. Gaining one position per hour they were third after seven hours. By the twentieth hour, they were second and maintained this position just behind 917K drivers Richard Attwood and Hans Herrmann in the winning 917-023. This race, held in the rain, was a dramatic event and one of the most famous competitions in le Mans history.

When 917-043 came back to the factory for further research, The Porsche administration still believed that there were advantages to a perfectly balanced long-tail body, and studies were undertaken by race designer Norbert Singer, working with SeRA, and finally a 1971 version of the longtail 917 was produced. A new body was put on this chassis as the result of this extensive study .

For a $50 fee, we’ll get you out on the track in your car with an instructor for a single session mid-day on Saturday. Standard De safety requirements apply, so you’ll need as a minimum a Snell SA 2010 rated helmet. FSR has a few loaners available, so please email the registrar before you sign up if you'd like to borrow one. FSR welcomes the BMWCCA and other car clubs to this "Intro to HPDe" event. Registration is open, please go to register.fsrpca.org.

In April, 1971, 917-043 came to the le Mans Preliminary Test. This car, piloted by Jackie oliver set a dramatic record with the fastest lap in the course’s history, 3 minutes 13.6 seconds, an average speed of over 155 mph and a top speed of 239 mph. This was good enough for the pole. Under John Wyer’s control, 917-043 performed admirably but while leading the race for eleven hours it retired at 5:00 AM because of weak oil pressure. 917043 returned to the factory and the body was reconverted into the 1970 long version, which was used in aerodynamic tests for several years.

These new cars called Mark II’s were ready for the 1966 le Mans where eight of them were entered by three different private teams. The particularly brutal 1966 race (only 15 of the 55 starters finished) was readily won by three Mark II Ford’s who completed in a dramatic 1-2-3 finish.

Phil. I enjoyed reading ed’s article on driving Daytona. From my experience racing there, and subsequently coaching drivers over the last half dozen years at Daytona, he did a great job capturing the uniqueness and difficulties of turning fast laps there; and the grandeur of 31 degree banking and mile long straights. For two of those years I had the pleasure (and challenge) of coaching two young european drivers who had won european championships on small tracks and earned rides with us. To see their faces when we rode through the tunnel into the infield and they were told they would be achieving just over 165 mph before braking for Turn 1, was an experience. Both did well and came up to speed quickly. I would like to correct one point ed makes: he indicates that the Audi Club runs the only De at Daytona. That is incorrect. PCA was the first club ever to obtain a contract with Daytona and run either a club race or a De at the track. We have done so every october since 2007. The De group is open to experienced solo drivers and has a great reputation. The group is open to marques other than Porsche so it fills fast. Registration opens about 90 days before the event each year for those interested in attending this october. It had long been a dream of PCA Club Racing to hold an event at Daytona and we had been rebuffed without understanding why. While I was on the executive council of PCA I asked the then zone Rep for Florida, Ruben ledesma, to see if he could help us make progress. After 6-7 years of approaches, Ruben and I determined who the real decision makers on this matter were and what their real objections were. We met with them at Daytona in 2006, presented our case, and subsequently signed a three year contract with the track. By that time Ruben had become PCA’s national treasurer and I was completing my term as National President. His work was key to us breaking the logjam. That contract has been extended. The backstory will have to wait for another time.

(“Buhatti Type 57G “The Tank”)

1936 Bugatti Type 57G “Tank”: In June 1936 the Automobile Club of France Grand Prix allowed the participation of “Grand Touring Cars.” This category included their definition of a sports cars. A few months before that Bugatti designed a special racing type 57S engine with a lighter crankshaft. It was called the 57G. A car with an unusual streamlined all enveloping body and this 57G engine was tested on June 7, 1936 at Montlhéry. It was sometimes referred to as the, “aerodynamic mule” which became the prototype of the three 57G Tanks.

I agree with ed that as unique as Daytona is, we have tracks that offer more technical driving challenges in our back yard; VIR comes immediately to mind. I’m happy that PCA members have the opportunity to experience both. Thanks for your work as editor of the H o. We all appreciate your efforts in keeping everyone informed of First Settler’s activities, and thanks for letting me set the record straight. ~Tom Bobbitt

lap records were set during this testing and the two other Tanks were assembled days before the Grand Prix of the Automobile Club of France for sports cars to be held at Montlhery. The race was easily won by the museum’s car, going at an average of 77 mph for just under eight hours, and record setting times were also made that day. later, at the Grand Prix de la Marne held at Rheims, the 57G won again at an average of 86 mph. In June 1937 the “Tank” won the 24 hours of le Mans, the first time a Bugatti had ever prevailed in a major sports car race. The museum’s car is one of three built and the only one that remains. Jean Bugatti was killed driving one of the others. It’s been up the hill at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, it was on the lawn at the Pebble Beach where it won the Pebble Beach Trophy. And saving the best for last - the 1970 Porsche 917 lH: Porsche started slowly in the evolution of their post-war racing production program. Racing versions of the initial 356 series, such as the 550, progress into the RS61, but they never really competed with the big boys in major races. Gradually, a series of cars increasing in speed and complexity evolved, from the 904 to the 910 and beyond. Then, dramatically, they introduced the 917 in the March 1969 Geneva Motor Show. This tubular chassis 4500cc, air-cooled 550-horsepower flat-12 engine, with striking aerodynamics was an immediate success. In a few weeks it had set top-speed record at 211 mph at le Mans, as well as a track record at an average speed of 149 mph. The design of this engine came on the heels of the dictate of Automobile Club de l’ouest (ACo) to reduce the average speeds achieved by the Ford Mk IV and the Ferrari 330 P4. Thus, prototypes were limited to 3,000 cc. on hearing this, Porsche decided to re-design the 917 prototype and to manufacture it in 25 examples as a GT car because the new rules allowed for 5,000-cc engines for small-scale, production models. obviously, they sold very few of these cars to clients. Meanwhile, John Wyer’s crew tweaked the car so that it ultimately outlasted the Ferraris (Continued on page 12)

Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum By Phil Grandfield A recent business trip took me to Philadelphia so Josie planned to come along with plans to spend the weekend in the City of Brotherly love. I went on line to Trip Advisor to see what the city had to offer an stumbled upon the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum ranked #29 of 360 things to do. I remember reading about this collection many years ago but had forgotten about it. After reviewing the website, a visit to this museum was high on our list for the weekend (well it was high on my list anyway.....). As it turned out, an early winter storm was predicted so we cancelled our plans for the weekend getaway. But I still needed to make the business trip and would have some time to kill so I bought my tickets in advance.

race winning Porsches from the 1980’s and some F-1 and Indy Cars. But for this the museum offers an explanation and apology. “This collection may well be characterized more by its omissions than by its inclusions. Where are all the great Grand Prix, Indianapolis, Formula one, and other open-wheel racing specials? Where are the great muscle cars which ultimately became stock racers? If you’re restricting yourself to sports cars, where are the great small displacement lolas, lotuses and Fiats, which provided such roadracing enjoyment? From a collector’s point of view, particularly one who doesn’t have the time to go racing on a regular basis, the open-wheeled machines are not drivable under ordinary circumstances. They cannot be taken on the road, they are always unmuffled, and the single-seater does not even allow enjoyment with a partner at one’s side, consequently they get little use. The later open-wheeled race cars have become complex to the point where external starters, special fuels and unavailable parts all define a different animal. Not to mention the computers and software required to run and tune them.

What a great find! This museum is fantastic and should be on every racing car enthusiasts list of things to do. It’s situated in a nondescript industrial park about a mile from the Philadelphia Airport. Right off of I95 it’s easy to find without having to deal with downtown traffic. It’s close enough to the airport that a visit would be a good way to spend a couple of hours during a layover. The focus of the collection is competition cars and includes some of the most rare race cars you’ll find anywhere. Most are unrestored; some looking like they just drove off the race track. The best part of this collection is that the cars are still driven today. The museum hosts “Demo Days” a couple of time a month where the take some of the cars out and drive them in the large parking lot behind the building. Check out the website and their schedule at www.simeonemuseum.org.

the visitor will not be bored by the sometimes too-folksy accounts of the particular car and how it was acquired, and mainly I know that the visitors will be enthralled by Michael Furman’s ability, without technical alteration by the digerati, to present the vehicle and its parts in their most flattering light. If any of these goals is achieved, the photographer and this author will be content.”

advised him to get rid of the car before he lost his license. TCSX2287 is the only Daytona Coupe which has not been restored. Type 35 Bugatti:The archetypal car, the 2-liter type 35 such as in the collection, gradually metamorphosed from a combination race and road car (with road equipment), to pure racing versions with larger engines and supercharger ending in the powerful Type 35 B and Type 51. Though these cars had similar chassis, they became bulkier than the original 1650 pound Type 35 car with larger radiators and much more robust engines. The single overhead cam engine on the original Type 35 capable of 95 horsepower ultimately became a double overhead cam version in the Type 51 which competed effectively with the great 8cylinder Alfa Romeos.

Here is the background of the museum of some of the cars. I picked these examples as some of the highlights of the collection in my eyes. But it’s a hard choice because of the wide variety and uniqueness of the collection of about 65 cars. Ferrari, Bugatti, Alfa Romeo, Corvette, Delahaye, Maserati, Bentley, Ford, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, Plymouth (Superbird), Stutz, Duesenberg, Jaguar, Talbot-lago, Cunningham, Aston-Martin, oh, and Squire Roadster. Never heard of a Squire? Not surprising since only seven were built in the 1930’s, two with a sports body design, and one is in the museum. It’s beautiful and was designed and built by a nineteen year old kid.

Clearly a purposeful performance automobile with no compromise for comfort, the surfeit of louvers throughout, the unique cast aluminum wheels, engine turning and hand scraping on some unpainted parts, and the overall noise and smell orchestrated an aesthetic gem, which is why so many were sold to amateur and professional racing men and women alike. As the Bugatti sales brochure indicates, the Type 35 could be purchased with road equipment (fenders and lights), whereas the later models were pure race cars, road equipped by the driver’s themselves if necessary.

Daytona Coupe: Chassis #CSX2287 was the very first prototype Cobra

of all these excuses, if you will, the fact that is both stylistically and functionally, the pure race car often does not offer the practical excitement provided by the sports car. From a museum conservator’s point of view, the nonenthusiasts who come to visit and learn, actually our target group, are much more likely to resonate with a roadable-looking car rather than a pure racing machine apparently designed to be managed only by an enthusiast or professional.

Here’s more of the story. years ago, I’d read about the Carroll Shelby Daytona Coupe built in 1964 to compete for the even among the specific genre of cars World Championship. Shelby knew the that are in the collection, there are many open cockpit Cobra’s were at an absences and omissions. It is far from complete, yourself to make it up the Philly, spend $12, and a couple of hours and it would not be likely, even if there were sufficient funds and ready strolling through history. My only regret is that the collection stops in availability of good original examples, that a universally representative 1975 with the newest car being an Alfa Romeo Tipo 323 - World selection could be presented. Rather, it is hoped that the visitor will be Championship winner in 1975 and 1977. I think it would be great to see refreshed on the general history of some of these great cars. I hope that

loud, smelly, and uncomfortable they were certainly not the ideal road car, a fact not lost on the Italian fans who often eschew the idea that Bugatti were any competition to their Italian favorites. But, as a cult car, Bugatti always has, and still does maintain a panache which no other sports car can manage. Witness the numerous clubs throughout the world, the glut of books still being produced regularly and the renaissance of the name in the form of the most expensive and most powerful road car one can buy at the time of this writing. Furthermore, interest in their classicism is witnessed by the fact that virtually any part of these frangible creations can be purchased new from the various specialist shops who can make you a “tool room” copy if so desired. Ford GT40 MkII: The Big Three American automobile manufacturer had agreed, more or less, to stay away from international racing. However, by the late-1950s sports car racing was a major influence throughout the world. A victory at the 24 hours of le Mans assured bragging rights and a sense of technical superiority. Ford initially tried to partner with the Ferrari operation in the hope of competing but there were disagreements between the two individuals (Henry Ford, Jr. and enzo Ferrari) so that Mr. Ford, with a substantial cash surplus, decided to go it on his own. His organization clearly recognized that they were far behind in competition technology, particularly at the level of le Mans.

(“one of Six Daytona Coupes”)

Daytona Coupe, and is the only coupe that was built entirely at the Shelby American race shop in Venice, California. It has an extensive race history, competing at Daytona, Sebring, Reims, Spa Francorchamps, oulton Park TT, le Mans and Tour de France. Chassis CSX2287 won the GT class at the 12 Hours of Sebring in March 1964 with MacDonald and Holbert behind the wheel and marked the first victory for a Cobra Daytona Coupe. This coupe ended its racing career by setting 25 USAC/FIA world records at the Bonneville Salt Flats, Utah, in November 1965, while driven by Craig Breedlove, Bobby Tatroe and Tom Greatorex during a Goodyear tire testing session.

By now he wanted to beat Ferrari, no expense spared. In fact, America had not won a le Mans race since 1921, and had no dominant success with the european sponsored Stutz efforts of the 1920s, nor the Cunningham activity throughout the 1950s and early-1960s. So Ford teamed up with lola, a company run by eric Broadley who had some experience in producing mid-engined sports racers with Ford power.

All trace of CSX2287 was lost by the mid-1970s, with car historians and collectors fearing the car had been destroyed. In 2001 the car was rediscovered in a rental storage unit in California. The owner Donna o'Hara had committed suicide and the car remained undiscovered for almost 30 years. Due to its estimated worth of over $4,000,000 the car was part of an extensive legal battle between her mother and a friend of Ms o'Hara who was the recipient in her will of the contents of the storage unit. An earlier owner of the car appears to have been music producer HyPeRlINK "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Spector" Phil Spector who had been known to drive it on the streets of los Angeles. Built for high-speed sprints, the cab became uncomfortably warm as the car engine heated up, among other problems. "It wasn't a street car; it was a race car", Shelby said. Still, Spector drove it on the streets, and legend is that Spector racked up so many speeding tickets, his lawyer

To be a Ford, this car had to be based around the currently used V8 with the central camshaft and a push rod overhead valve system. A standard Ford Fairlane engine, capable of 350 horsepower, was mated to a special force feed lubricated transaxle. Initial testing of these cars was disappointing but with the new gearbox and the installation of a Shelby Cobra cast iron V8 engine, the performance was somewhat better. later Shelby was called in to replace eric Broadley and the lola team. Under Shelby’s direction the new GT’s came in 3rd in the 1965 Daytona race. even with big block cars the 1965 le Mans was a failure for the Ford team. After development with the 4.7 liter engine and the T-44 gearbox, the GT40 was perfected and the new Ford team now headed by John Wyer. (Continued on page 10)

Letter to the Editor

(Continued from page 9)

Meanwhile, John Wyer’s crew tweaked the car so that it ultimately outlasted the Ferraris (Continued on page 12)

in the two subsequent years of racing.

From the President Jason Horner FSR Members, I would like to thank everyone who attended our New year Party and for making it another success. In FSR’s true spirit over $ (ask Josie) was raised for charity from the white elephant auction that was held. Thanks for your generous donations and for getting our charities off to a great start. Also, congratulations go out to all the (“Jason Horner - President, First Settlers Region”)

lucky winners.

Many thanks to everyone who was involved in setting up this event and providing items for the auction. This event along with any other event we hold does not occur by accident. each one represents a tremendous effort by many of your fellow members who volunteer their time and talents. your gratitude is the only currency they receive, so please thank them whenever you can. The board and I would like to again thank Steve Sarfaty (Western VP) and Bret Jacobs (Activities officer) for their years of service to the club and serving on the board. I would also like to welcome Dave Wallace as our new Western VP and Vincent Canepa, our new Activities officer, both have embraced their roles with enthusiasm and fresh energy. We have already sprung our clocks forward and spring is in the air with longer and warmer days ahead. It is time to uncover those cars and ensure your Porsche is in tip top shape by either performing the maintenance yourself or patronizing our primary sponsor Checkered Flag Porsche. Happy anniversary to our members who have reached milestones of 5 years or more in being members in PCA! Thanks again for your continued membership and support. This is your club and we are only as active as our membership. This club is filled with so many great people that you should get to know as many as you can. If you would like to attend and perhaps chair or co-chair an event, step up! If there is something that you would like to do or you have something to offer for the betterment of the club, we would really like to know. Please do not hesitate to contact either myself or any other board members with any new ideas, events or activities you may have. See you out there,
