The nature of loadbearing masonry brick is heavy, strong and stable, and is the material most traditionally seen around the Harvard-Allston area. To make our site blend in with the already existing environment, we chose to work with brick for these reasons. Seeing that brick was mainly used for cladding, with the use of veneer bricks, our goal was to utilize brick differently, using it as the structure itself for the treatment of the envelope. Through the concepts of shifting and indenting, we explored ways in which the structural material can create a thickened facade that deals with the dynamic system of flows of water, wind, sun and energy.

THE EPHEMERAL ACTIVE SYSTEMS + EXPERIENCE FLEXIBLE STRUCTURE

Interior CLT column and beam structure allows for the addition of interior partition walls for dividing spaces as needed. In areas where double height spaces are needed, CLT bays can be removed as needed.

DURABLE STRUCTURE

Exterior Brick Masonry load bearing walls along the perimeter of the building requiring little maintenance overtime primarily as face-grout. Brick walls vary in depth as a response to solar orientation.

ACOUSTICS

Sound insulation can be placed below floor structure underneath the HVAC. Sound absorptive partiton walls can be placed in 6� spacing of wood grille ceiling. Wood grille ceiling offers high acoustic performance and minimizes HVAC noise.

LIGHTING

Plug and Play LED lighting system uses a series of low voltage cables that can be easily replaced or fixed based on lighting needs. Lighting is suspended from the wood grille ceiling, supporting any shape or size lighting fixture.

COMFORT SYSTEMS

Spaces are heated and cooled using active chilled beam systems that minimize size and use of air ducts in the building. Active beams are often used in building retrofits due to their flexibility in comfort requirements. Spaces are also ventilated passively using awning windows between brick panels.

SYSTEMS MAINTENANCE

Panelized wood grille modules can provide direct access to active systems for maintenance and updating overtime. The modules can easily be removed or replaced if damaged. 18� suspension of ceiling can provide enough spacing for future demands of larger air duct systems.

HARVARD RESEARCH LIBRARY Demand for smaller spaces (meeting rooms, study rooms, offices), can be achieved by installing 6� partition walls. Walls can be inserted in wood grille ceiling for increase in acoustic insulation. Walls include windows to let borrowed light in deeper across spaces that are further from window wall. Protect Book stacks from direct sunlight by placing them against brick wall panels with varying sizes of 8’, 10’ and 12’.

Market stands can be placed along brick wall panels for ease of circulation and movement of large crowds.

Market stands can install light fixtures above each stand to direct people to the desired stand. The roof insulation slopes to drain any rainwater, causing a drop in the decking structure.

FOOD PRODUCTION CENTER

Skygreens be placed along glazed facades on the southern and northern facades. Skygreens require 19’ ceiling clearance, therefore CLT floors can be removed in those programs.

Since minimal heating and cooling is required in growing areas, active beams can be used less with more dependancy on natural ventilation through the awning windows.
