Carpenter Center

Details We were asked to draw the project 1 on papers by hands which was very different than drawing them on pc or mac.

Project 1-B The Cube The cube was built by 15 pieces of foam core, and formulated a 6×6×6 inch model.

Four pieces in the center of the cube divided the interior space to create two small sections, I regarded them as the two ‘floors’. The long piece with a slope lean on the second floor is the stair connecting the two sections. (shown as the red arrow) All six faces of the cube can free stand on the ground, because on each sides, there are at least three pieces of foam core supporting the whole structure.

Project 1-A Carpenter Center We measured the distances between the columns of Carpenter center and also measured the walls outside the Carpenter Center. Then we simply calculated the curves that generated by the structure of the building.

At last, we integrate our data and drew it in CAD. The following is the first floor plan of the Carpenter Center.

In addition to showcase the hypsography of Carpenter center, we measured the height of the ramps and the small garden’s height, and then we drew some serial sections on the plan in order to illustrate the real ground level of Carpenter Center.

You can clearly notice that the bolder lines indicates the serial sections and I also showed the cross section of the ramp above.

On the left side, this photo shows the axonometric view of the first floor of Carpenter Center, which combines the dashed thin line to indicated the upper structures.

We measured every single distance between two columns and the length of the exterior wall associated a with the height of the ground level structures.

You can also see the ramp was measured and drew on the plan, the dash indicated the connections between these columns and bolder line is the outside and inside wall of Carpenter Center.

Project 1-A Carpenter Center Our concentration were moved to the Northeastern façade of Carpenter Center in order to design a multi-functional study space enclosed by the ramp and the building.

My first idea is to build a space that can correspond the elements in the northeastern façade and properly avoid the noisy from the path near the façade.

The space includes a small study room, a group study room and a larger space for lectures and speeches.

As a result, I initially designed a ramp-like space which follows the structure of the ramp but very simple.

Then I noticed that everyone’s model is within the spot enclosed by a limit constructed by the building and the ramp. I wanted to break the limit and also I let my space has a connecting section with the original ramp.

As a result, I used a ramp break through the original ramp and enclosure outside of the ramp. And I carefully calculate the angle degree of the ramp in order to prevent my ramp from knocking down the original one.

The whole structure contains different parts of stair s and ramps which combine to each other to divide the building into different movements. In the center of the enclosing ramp is a huge outdoor space which was surrounded by my ramp. So it is very quite for the lectures and speeches.

This spot is the place where study spaces located.

You can clearly understand the connecting section and the whole structure of my study space by seeing the top-view of the façade with study space.

And you also can read the intersecting parts between the two ramp.

The red arrow shows that the place where the ramps are connected.

The grey part is the original ramp, you can see it is under the new one and moving through the panel in the new ramp.

Project 1-A Carpenter Center You can also see them in the axonometric drawing of my model.

The section above shows the place where the original ramp moving through the new structure and people can walk down to it. And this lower one shows the connection section of the two ramp (Blue) and the additional balcony alongside the new ramp (red).

On the ramp, the stairs are the small individual study space, and the balcony is the group meeting place, the lecture space is in the center of the building which can be reached by the long stairs followed the shape of the original ramp above them.

Project 2 Christian Science Center Plaza research + pavilion design In this project we were asked to use apertures to view the plaza at the specific plot which we should choose at the beginning. My spot is located at the center of the long school building and the old Christian Science Church

I noticed that the shape of the Church is pointing out the plot and all of the main buildings can be seen at this plot, so I chose it as my researching plot.

The main idea of my model is using the elements in the CSC plaza added some my own design to create a pavilion which can guide people moving through the whole building and also gathering at the place where the two artificial sculptures located.

The pavilion combines my five aperture’s characteristics and earns the simple space more funny movement.

The five elements that support the design are: 1. Absorbs the elements form the plaza to create a space followed the characteristics of the whole plaza.

2. People is enable to move into the pavilion from three different direction.

3. Divided the road into two parts and don’t let people see through the pavilion.

4. Gathering people at the sculptures and guiding people move through the pavilion.

5. See different landscapes from each side of the building.

This one shows the roof of the pavilion, and you can noticed that the angle degrees are following the church’s and the roads’ angle.

People can actually move into the building from the three sides of the pavilion (shows on the drawing).

But they cannot see through the whole pavilion. (shows below)

Project 2 Christian Science Center Plaza research + pavilion design The axonometric drawing shows the five main apertures of the pavilion, you can see different landscapes and different buildings in the pavilion when you are moving through it along side the path.

There are two apertures on the roof so that light can shinning the inside space and people can see the sky.

Project 2 Christian Science Center Plaza research + pavilion design The plan show the paths to guide people walk and the locations of the two sculptures also. It shows that people can not see through the whole structure from the three entrances.

Whatever side you walk into the building, you can not see through (from red arrow, blue arrow and yellow arrow).

The section above shows that the locations of two sculptures and people moving through and relaxing in the pavilion. You can notice that the ground level is not a horizontal line rather that has some stair enable people to move up and down.

Project 3 Museum Stairs The project 3 started at the research of two beautiful paintings in the Museum of Fine Arts. We paid attentions on the details and the spatial relationship indicated by the elements in the painting. We moved around the real ones tried to find out different feeling by seeing different paintings.

Finally I got two ideas of seeing the two painting in the space.

The first painting combine four little girls and the living room of her house. Spatially gave me a 3D feeling by seeing the whole painting. I wonder if it would be different by seeing them at different times. So I divided them in two parts in my museum.

The second painting gave me a feeling that the outdoor space was rise up above the two characters and I put the painting the stair space into order to give me a feeling that the painting is also been rise.

So the multi-effect can make people consider the painting is 3D type and more real than before.

The analysis of two paintings finally used into my model and create a ideal view by photoshop.

Project 3 Museum Stairs

The concepts of my model are “Architecture is the structures break the boundaries between interior and exterior spaces.” and “To divide the space is to create a larger space in people’s imagination.”

You can noticed that there are lots of large aperture in my walls and the interior structure, such as the ramp and the balcony are combining with the exterior wall. And the spaces are much more than the space I had not divided. For example, all the circulations in my model are constructed by 5-feet wide ramp or stairs.

Project 3 Museum Stairs My model is eight feet under the ground, people can only enter the building by using the ramp to the entrance of the museum.

The reason is to avoid noisy in the city and to create a different view than other museum. Because the under-ground level can be light differently by sun.

This are the explored axonometric drawings of my museum model. They shows the locations of the two paintings and the part of the sequences in the model, the small arrow can guide you move through the building.

I pull out the stairs and the two circulation sequence out of the whole building in order to create a more clear view in the model. To show the interior relationships and the whole constructions.
