NORTH DURHAM: COMING TOGETHER, GROWING STRONGER If you’ve been waiting for the right time to take your business to the next level, it doesn’t get any better than now. Over the next few months, entrepreneurs in North Durham Region are being offered an unprecedented number of opportunities to see their business grow. Momentum kicked off earlier this year, when the Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan announced the Region’s intention to nurture our area’s economic strength. By partnering with new and existing businesses and providing them with opportunities to grow, this five year plan sets out to boost the economy, and fortify the community.

P. 10 Connecting on Wheels! The First-ever Epic Lake to Lake Adventure Ride P. 12 Talk Your Way to the Top: How Communication Builds Business

The Epic Lake to Lake Adventure Ride has set out with similar intentions. Encouraging visitors and residents to acquaint (or reacquaint) themselves with the natural beauty of Durham Region, this 95 km bike ride begins in Beaverton and goes to all the way Ajax. Next up on the business calendar: On October 11th, North Durham entrepreneurs can join the 6th annual Building Business Forum. Here, local businesses have the opportunity to strategically network, while discovering exciting new resources to help them expand their businesses. Another opportunity to seize is new to the whole of North Durham, but has been helping individuals and businesses thrive worldwide for almost 100 years. A group of local business people have started a Toastmasters club in the area. These intrepid entrepreneurs spearheaded this initiative to bolster their businesses through the power of communication and leadership - and they’re actively looking for new members who wish to do the same. Anyone is welcome to benefit from this enriching experience. It’s a wonderful way to meet new people and be exposed to new possibilities. And since an entrepreneur’s year never really winds down, November sees Do It In Durham - a collaboration of events that runs during Global Entrepreneur Week - hosting events for Durham’s thriving community of entrepreneurs. And that’s the thing: you have to put yourself out there. Success isn’t going to come find you. Through action and collaboration, however, growth is almost inevitable. Read on to find out more about these opportunities and events. I hope to see you there. After all, together, we prosper! MEET THE UXBRIDGE & AREA NETWORKING GROUP What is the Uxbridge & Area Networking Group? We’re small and home-based business owners who meet monthly, building our network of business connections. There are no passwords, no secret handshakes, no quota for referrals or “homework” to be done. We’re a friendly, welcoming business group getting together to help each other to be successful. We exist to: • Share ideas, expertise and experiences • Make introductions to others in the community • Provide cost-effective ways to promote members’ businesses Who are our members? We are entrepreneurs, business owners and operators, as well as local representatives of larger organizations. Our members include individual sales professionals, business service providers, network marketing organizations and companies who provide consumer services. Most members are from the north Durham area, however we support a larger ‘ecosystem’ with members travelling regularly to our meetings from other communities. When are the meetings? We meet once a month (other than July and August), either for breakfast or lunch (see Page 1 for meeting details). How do I get involved? Join us for your first introductory meeting!

DURHAM REGION – THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE Durham Region is the right choice for a bright future. This is the concept the Region’s Planning and Economic Development hopes to bring to life over the next five years, through the 2017-2021 Economic Development Strategy and Action Plan. The plan offers ways to enhance economic development in our area via an integrated, aligned and multi-faceted approach. Durham Region is one of the fastest growing municipalities in the country, offering exceptional talent, innovation, and a transportation network that includes air, rail and highways, among other key points. “Through collaboration, and a strong entrepreneurial spirit, we can create and sustain better economic and community outcomes for all who live, work and invest in our region,” says Kathy Weiss, Director of Economic Development and Tourism. “It is through our partnerships that we can deliver timely, competitive and varied opportunities for new and expanding businesses.” According to the plan, key economic drivers for growth include enhanced partnerships; the promotion of infrastructure readiness for regional competitiveness; capitalizing on Durham’s talent pool; fostering innovative ecosystems; retaining and expanding existing business (north and south Durham); attracting new investment; and marketing Durham Region internationally. Complementing these activities are five unique attributes that drive current growth: high-impact infrastructure projects; impressive educational opportunities aligned with business; governance models that support collaboration; established networks with the marketplace; and a multi-dimensional support system for the business and investor communities. One of the goals of this plan is retaining and expanding business in North Durham. The focus is on actively facilitating investment and growth across the region, supporting existing businesses to grow and prosper, and attracting new investment to Durham Region. This will be a coordinated approach to economic development in North Durham as outlined in the Vibrant North Durham Economic Development Plan. “One of the objectives of this plan is inspiring and supporting entrepreneurship, innovation, labour force development and expansion initiatives,” says Nancy Rutherford, Manager of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. “This will help create a stronger better connected North Durham business community.” To ensure Durham Region’s council and local businesses are aware of the plan’s progress, key outcomes are scheduled to be measured and reported each year. The plan is available on the Invest Durham website at: http://www.investdurham.ca/Publications/Index.aspx.

THE BUILDING BUSINESS FORUM LOOKING TO INSPIRE FOR ANOTHER YEAR! Local entrepreneurs and business owners have the opportunity to network with and learn from North Durham’s leading small business people at the 6th Annual Building Business Forum. The half day conference is designed to inspire and support entrepreneurship while helping local businesses to make strategic connections and find new business development resources. The goal of the event is to help build a stronger rural economy and healthy business environments throughout North Durham. This year, the event is hosted by the Township of Scugog at the Blackstock Recreation Complex (3340 Church St., Blackstock, ON). It is taking place on Wednesday, October 11th from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. The theme of the event is “Making it on Main Street” with the hope of inspiring all types of businesses with success stories of small but mighty business owners who are showing what it takes to make it on main street. “We hope that we can encourage people to start companies or grow their businesses by listening to local success stories and showcasing successful businesses”, says Nancy Rutherford, Manager, Economic Development at the Region of Durham and one of the forum coordinators. “We know that when we bring local entrepreneurs and business people together exciting ideas are generated. The connections people make when networking really help support them with their day-to-day business decisions.” The We C.A.R.E (Create, Attract, Retain and Expand) for Business Tradeshow will be back again this year featuring key business resource organizations and community stakeholders who support entrepreneurship and small business. New this year, the event will feature Ignite Sessions, facilitated networking opportunities, and an area for businesses to advertise their products and services. SEVEN COURTESY HABITS THAT WILL PAYOFF FOR YOUR BUSINESS by Martin Birt HR Consultant at www.hraskme.com

1. Don’t just be on-time. Be a little early! Punctuality is an important signal of respect. You are demonstrating that you understand the value that others place on their time. 2. Say “Hello” to everyone. Everyone likes to be acknowledged. Greet people respectfully. Do this with people you are meeting for the first time and for people you see every day. 3. Remember people; especially remember names! Everyone likes to feel that they are important enough to you that you remember who they are. If you’re not good at this write down a persons name later and maybe a little something about them. 4. Listen attentively and look like you’re listening! Active listening payoffs in two ways. Your own recollections will be more accurate and you will have demonstrated respect for the other person. Be aware of your body language. People respond to and remember things like your posture and how you made eye-contact. 5. Watch your language! I spent the early part of my working life in the army. When I’m with my best friend from those days the language can get salty. It’s language that you and I should never use with people we don’t know really really well. Use language that is professional and respectful. 6. Practice “safe” humour! In his book The Humor Advantage (Why some businesses are laughing all the way to the bank) author Michael Kerr writes about how humour can contribute to a positive customer image of your brand. Safe humour “laughs with people, not at them.” 7. Use these two powerful words - “THANK-YOU”! “Thank-you” is all about opening channels of communication and keeping them open. “Thank-you” will help make all this happen.

TALK YOUR WAY TO THE TOP: HOW COMMUNICATION BUILDS BUSINESS Just about anyone who has established themselves as a successful entrepreneur can tell you how important communication and leadership skills are to the startup and continued growth of a business. And they have to be able to tell you: being able to effectively and authoritatively communicate is one of the biggest personal assets you can bring to your business. People who can’t express what their business is about will have a hard time selling it. It’s that simple. So what’s an entrepreneur – budding, new, or established – to do? Many programs exist to build skills of this type, but as with any skill, it makes sense to develop and practice these over time. Since 1924, Toastmasters International has provided an ongoing program of training and support to nurture the development of communication and leadership skills. The fact that thriving clubs exist in nearly every country across the globe speaks to the power of this program. Here at home, nearly 20 clubs have already been established in south Durham Region, ranging from Pickering to Bowmanville. However, only a single club exists (barely) north of Highway 7 in Brooklin, and until recently, none have existed in North Durham’s Uxbridge/Scugog/Brock area. But that looking like it’s going to change - and soon. What does Toastmasters offer the entrepreneur? Affordability, encouragement, and the opportunity to practice and hone their skills in a supportive environment. Toastmasters clubs provide a nurturing atmosphere where encouragement and positive reinforcement create the central component of evaluation, and provide an opportunity both to develop new skills and put existing skills into practice - not only in the giving of speeches, but also in areas such as meeting management, providing effective feedback, and heightened listening skills. It doesn’t matter if you are a novice or experienced speaker: each meeting assigns individuals different roles, so anyone has the opportunity to learn from every aspect of the experience. While regular attendance is a key asset in a member’s development, a “come as you’re able” environment makes it easy to accommodate commitments effectively. An added benefit: networking in any setting provides an opportunity for collaboration for all entrepreneurs. Many Durham Region residents are in the process of trying to establish or expand new businesses, and many of these people work or live in the North Durham townships. This demographic is currently the focus of a new early-morning Toastmasters club launching in the Town of Uxbridge, and new members are actively welcomed at the Uxbridge Toastmasters Club (details below). Already, participants are seeing the undeniable, tangible and lucrative benefits of the program in action. Stop by and see for yourself. Voted #1 Fitness Centre Since 2009! I joined NRG 4 Life Fitness in early March. I have been taking a variety of different classes and it didn’t take long before I started to notice the improvement in my cardio strength and balance as well…. stronger from the inside out. I want to thank ALL of the amazing staff and instructors at NRG for their knowledge and support and for being so positive. I believe it is because of this encouragement from the instructors that make people want towork hard and obtain their personal goals. Jayne F
