Welcome to Issue 9 of AutoXstra. With the first Quarter behind us we have had a strong start to the year. The local market continues to change, and we remain focused on the opportunities that present themselves off the back of this.

Since our last edition, the most exciting news is that store number seven is open! Located on the Somerset Road in Coleraine, our newest branch has hit the ground running as we focus on the company’s commitment to offering leading brands, by excellent people with excellent customer service.

Our commitment to bring Network Auto to as many garages across the province won’t stop there, so keep your eyes on our social media for more updates on branch number eight, which will follow later in the year!

Our focus on offering premium brands and the product lines you require continues. In recent months we have launched tools with Laser & Sykes Pickavant, more diagnostic solutions from ThinkCar, Coolant Flushing Machines from SPIN and Turbos from Nissens alongside our ever-expanding portfolio of parts from leading brands, which we have invested heavily in with additional stock over the past 12 months.

Recently, we were delighted to partner with MechanExpert for their first 3 roadshows of 2025 as they took place in Northern Ireland. Throughout the first week of April, we supported the MechanExpert team with shows in Newtownards, Downpatrick and Dungannon, and we were delighted to see so many customers attending. This complimented additional training earlier in 2025 as we worked in February with Schaeffler to deliver LuK training, and Nissens to deliver training on new refrigerants and temperature vs pressure diagnostics. Training is something we are committed to and we will endeavour to put on more sessions as they become available.

Last year we introduced a trade WhatsApp number for each branch, and this has proved to be very popular. Committed to continuously making it easier to buy from us, our new online catalogue, NavCat, is in the testing stages, and we intend to roll this out to several customers over the coming months. Ease of ordering combined with a fleet of 50+ vehicles constantly circulating the province means that our products are never far away from you and your business.

MechanExpert NI Roadshows 2025

In April, Network Auto was delighted to be the partner motor factor for the MechanExpert Roadshows in Northern Ireland. For those who aren’t aware of MechanExpert, it brings the leading brands of the aftermarket directly to workshop technicians.

MechanExpert partners with Bosch, Brembo, Exide, FAG, Febi, Gates, INA, KYB, LIQUI MOLY, LuK, MANN-FILTER, MEYLE, Nissens, Sachs and Shaftec and on their website you can find the latest technical guides and trade news.

Three times a year they collectively hit the road to provide 9 roadshows, which allow you to chat directly with the technical experts from these brands, along with tech talks, with three of these generally being held in Northern Ireland.

We were very excited to partner with MechanExpert to support shows in Newtownards, Downpatrick and Dungannon. The shows were all held in the workshops of technical colleges and all attendees received a free polo shirt and were entered into a draw to win a Bosch Cordless Angle Grinder. It was fantastic to see so many mechanics and workshop technicians turn out to get the latest industry updates and have the opportunity for a chat with the experts one-on-one.

Bosch Training - A Great Success

In October, Bosch and their ADAS equipped van visited us to provide some free training sessions. Across two fantastic training demonstrations, they provided invaluable technical insights into the latest Bosch diagnostic equipment.

Key focus of the sessions was Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) and how these can help elevate a garage or workshop to the next level, opening up a whole new revenue stream and assisting you to provide a comprehensive service offering to customers. Attendees found the training really useful, with positive feedback received all round. Nissens Training

Announced at the September MechanExpert shows, Nissens visited us here in February 2025 to provide a comprehensive training session on Air Conditioning. Areas covered included:

• Why Air Conditioning?

• What AC systems exist in the world today

• Review of the different systems

• Understanding the relationship between pressure and temperature

• Review of the individual components

• Troubleshooting via pressure and temperature

• What AC oils are available on the market and how do they interact with each other

• How to use trace drug and is there a difference between spore drugs

• Status of refrigerant and focus on 1234yf

• Flushing / cleaning an AC system – is it necessary?

With a clear objective to inspire and develop aftermarket professionals, Nissens also provide access to multiple training areas, details of which can be found on their website. Scan the QR code for more details.

With the support of MechanExpert, we were able to provide this for free to a limited number of customers, 12 of whom were in attendance on the night. The training took place on 13th February, at Mallusk Enterprise Park and from the positive feedback received, an interactive and informative evening was enjoyed by all.

Colleague Training

Always striving to enhance our knowledge to support our customers better, a team of six Network Auto colleagues completed the IMI Level 3 Award in Automotive Refrigerant Handling at SERC Motor Vehicle Downpatrick in October.

The L3 course is designed to cover the operating principles and components of the automotive A/C system and their functions, and the correct use of the equipment used to service modern Air Conditioning systems using R134a and R1234yf refrigerants. Our colleagues are now certified compliant, meeting the minimum F-gas requirement (EC842/2006 and annex EC307/2008).

Thanks for Alan at SERC for the fantastic course, it was very informative and will help us continue to provide the best service for our customers.

Timing Belt Kits

NEW to STOCK

Schaeffler has put together intelligent KITs for changing timing belts under its INA product brand to make replacement in the garage particularly simple and efficient. These KITs contain all components required for the exchange, each individually adapted to the respective car:

• Timing belt

• Tensioner pulley

• Deflection pulley

• Required accessories such as screws, nuts, bolts and seals

As with all repair solutions from Schaeffler, the individual components are perfectly matched to ensure optimum functionality of the vehicle after repair. In general, we recommend urgently not to carry out repairs where only the belt or individual tension or deflection pulleys are replaced, because all components form a coordinated system. A garage professional therefore always replaces all relevant components of the entire belt drive.

Including the water pump

Since an existing water pump is often affected by wear, the wide INA product range also includes a large number of Timing Belt KITs with water pumps.

For engines in which the thermostat is mounted directly on the housing of the water pump and later replacement would require the timing belt to be removed again, INA also offers special KITs including the thermostat.

A sustainable replacement of the timing belt, including all relevant components, is thus enabled.

Turbochargers

ROLE:

Turbo increases engine efficiency and thus its power output. It is a turbine-driven device that forces extra air into the engine's combustion chamber.

OPERATION:

The turbo consists of a turbine and a compressor coupled by a common shaft. Operation of the turbo depends on the engine's exhaust gases. The energy of the exhaust gas flow is extracted and enables the turbocharger compressor to pump the air. Turbo operation depends on various components across different systems in the vehicle.

BERU's Pressure Sensor Glow Plugs (PSG) are glow plugs with an integrated pressure sensor to improve engine efficiency. The sensor measures the rapidly changing in-cylinder pressure in the combustion chamber and continuously reports it to the engine control unit. MEYLE engineers are passionate about improving their MEYLE HD stabiliser links, constantly seeking new ways of refining all components. To make installation and removal procedures easier for customers more and more MEYLE HD stabiliser links are designed with a wrench attachment at the ball pin - a distinguishing advantage, in particular over those original designs which lack this value-adding feature. Owing to the larger ball head the ball surface on MEYLE HD stabiliser links has been increased be 50%. This significantly improves the part‘s load carrying capacity along with its service life. The blue clip on plastic socket adds additional strength to the MEYLE HD part.

Secure Diagnostic Access

Protection of vehicle electronics:

Modern vehicle electronics are increasingly threatened by tampering and hacking attacks. More and more vehicle manufacturers, therefore, protect access to the diagnostic data of their new vehicle models. As a result, car repair shops no longer have full access to vehicle electronics. Instead, where available, they must first obtain access again via the respective manufacturer-specific gateways and payment concepts.

Vehicle diagnostics with one-time login:

SDA enables central access to the various participating manufacturer solutions by using the SingleKey ID (former BoschID). This consists of an e-mail address of the repair shop employee and a password. Registration for the personal SingleKey ID is free of charge and only required once. What's more, the ID can not only be used for SDA, but also for other Bosch applications, both professionally and privately, e.g., for booking technical training courses at Bosch Service Training Centres or for smart home applications.

SDA for independent repair shops:

Many vehicle manufacturers have different access requirements and payment concepts for accessing their vehicle data. As a consequence, the access process can be particularly challenging for independent car repair shops. To counteract this issue, Bosch has developed Secure Diagnostic Access (SDA), a central, integrated and standardied solution, which allows easy access to protected vehicle electronics. Diagnosis can thus be carried out in full, just like before, with the usual functions of ESI[tronic] Evolution.

In the above-mentioned vehicle with air conditioning and automatic temperature control, sporadic or complete failure of the interior blower fan can occur.

In order to remedy the problem, the error memory of the air-conditioning/heating control unit should be read out. If the error code refers to a mechanical error (e.g. B10BE07), a defect of the blower motor could well be the cause. If the error code refers to the power supply or the signals (e.g. B10BE31), then in most cases the electronic blower controller is defective.

Before replacing components, other causes of malfunction (defective fuse) should be ruled out. In addition, it is advisable to check whether a software update is available for the air-conditioning/heating control unit.

93515 – replacing an original version of the turbo needs additional parts

Background

The OE turbocharger 04L 253 014 L is no longer manufactured. The new OE part 04L253014M is the replacement part, and due to the modified position of the EGR flange, some additional parts are required to secure the proper installation in the vehicle.

Nissens turbo #93515 is the equivalent of the OE 04L253014M part, and thus, the technician must obtain the recommended installation parts to ensure the proper replacement of the unit.
