Welcome to issue 8 of AutoXstra, our first of 2024. It is hard to believe we are already in Q2 and delighted that we have started the year off well.

The big news since our last edition has been the opening of our sixth store in Enniskillen. Located in the Killyhevlin Industrial Estate we are well positioned to run vans in many directions and offer an enhanced local delivery service. Within a few days of opening, we hosted a MechanExpert roadshow at the premises, which was a fantastic evening and great to welcome so many local garages through our doors for a tour of the branch as well. I am hopeful that we can host other MechanExpert events this year, which is a great environment to meet the experts from the premium brands we have available on our shelves in all branches. We will share more details when available plus you can keep an eye on progress at www.MechanExpert.com.

We remain committed to offering market leading availability. In light of this the company has invested in huge range extensions in each branch of Kilen Coil Springs, Shaftec Calipers and Driveshafts, BM Catalytic Converters and Front Pipes, Borg & Beck Steering & Suspension, Cables, Hydraulics and Wheel Bearings amongst other products alongside a fresh injection of Bosch Friction, which continues to be really well received. We are always reviewing what we have available for you, and I am hopeful we will launch some new brands and products lines throughout the year.

Alongside our dedication to stock and availability, we remain focussed on delivering a market leading customer service. At the end of 2023 we introduced trade WhatsApp numbers at each of our stores. Simply message us details of what you are looking for and one of our team will swiftly reach out to discuss the options available. We have plans underway to make it even easier for you to trade with us through an online catalogue which I look forward to sharing more on in the coming weeks. With over 40 vans running around the province now, we remain committed to delivering our availability to you as often as we can.

We take pride in having great people at Network Auto who ensure we back up the company’s ambition with care and performance. I am delighted that we had an 83% uptake on free health checks at the end of 2023, something we have already committed to moving forward. Our newest branch is now open in the Killyhevlin Industrial Estate in Enniskillen. In a prime location on the edge of the town, the branch is best placed to provide a fantastic delivery service to garages and workshops in Enniskillen town and across Fermanagh.

Our sixth store will carry forward the ethos on which all our stores are built - providing the best people to advise you, the best service, and the best range of quality parts.

Compound Brake Discs

The compound brake disc is a new product innovation in lightweight design, comprised of a profiled steel hat, combined with a high-carbon cast iron friction ring. The two components are held together by stainless steel rivets. The design is based on the respective original equipment brake disc and the specially developed packaging protects both the brake disc and the anti-rust coating. Compound brake discs feature various materials, binding methods and designs, depending on the vehicle model.

Advantages over standard cast iron brake discs:

• Lightweight component design results in lower fuel consumption and reduced C02 emission.

• Reduced unsprung mass improves driving comfort and performance.

• Enhanced thermal capacity and heat conductivity reduces brake judder. Another advantage is that the friction ring is highly resistant to thermo-mechanical stresses.

• The friction ring and rotor hat are joined using a special method which further reduces undesired heat flow. This reduces warping and hot tears, as well as vibration and noise.

Impressive repair solution by MEYLE: ABS sensor kit for a targeted replacement

With a new MEYLE KIT, MEYLE offers another cost-saving repair solution in line with the current market value: the ABS sensor kit in MEYLE-ORIGINAL quality enables targeted replacement of the defective ABS sensor and the sensor ring – a solution that’s currently only available through MEYLE. Up until recently, if an ABS sensor had been damaged by a defective sensor ring, it would have been necessary to replace the entire wheel hub, which is expensive for both the driver and workshop. The MEYLE KIT comprising ABS sensor, sensor ring and installation materials can help: most of the time, the wheel hub is still fully functional and can be used. New Axle Shafts from Shaftec

What is it?

Also known as Half Shafts, Axle Shafts are an essential part of a vehicle’s drivetrain. The Axle Shaft transmits rotational power from the transmission into the wheels.

What does it do?

Axle Shafts are responsible for transferring torque while accommodating the up-anddown motion of the suspension system. In vehicles with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the Axle Shafts connect the transmission to the front wheels. In rear-wheel drive vehicles, they connect the differential to the rear wheels.

Where is it located?

Within the drivetrain of the vehicle, housed within the wheel assemblies on the underside of the vehicle.

At launch, the Axle Shaft range caters to applications from 2007 onwards, for popular vehicles such as the Mercedes Sprinter and VW Crafter. We intend to expand our Axle Shaft range over time, based on customer demand and feedback.

DMF Pro

Over 30 years ago, Schaeffler engineers developed a revolutionary technology for damping torsional vibrations in the drivetrain under the LuK product brand: the dual mass flywheel (DMF).

Unlike a conventional flywheel, the DMF consists of two masses which are mounted to rotate against each other.

A damping system in the form of arc springs is integrated into the DMF. Thus, it absorbs the torsional vibrations of the engine and almost completely.

Today, a DMF is already installed in every second new car and transporter – and the trend is rising!

More than 125 million vehicles in Europe are already equipped with a LuK DMF today.

Hill starts, endless traffic jams and winding roads – clutches for passenger cars are subject to a wide variety of demands every day. SACHS clutches, clutch kits and car clutch parts in OE quality get car drivers into gear easily. They ensure great convenience and are particularly reliable. SACHS clutches for passenger cars are also convincing due to their long service life.

Today, the service life of individual clutch components is almost identical. The SACHS clutch kit for cars takes this into account by providing all relevant car clutch parts and components that are required for clutch replacement. These are usually the clutch pressure plate, clutch disk and clutch release bearing.

The kit’s scope of supply includes a special grease for assembly that guarantees perfect, long-term car clutch functioning after the replacement. With the SACHS clutch kit for cars, clutch replacements can be performed safely, effectively and swiftly.

SACHS clutch kits are available in various combinations. In addition to the modern XTend clutch pressure plate for cars, the most advanced kit also includes a dual-mass flywheel (DMF). Apart from the clutch kit with DMF and XTend, there are additional combinations, for example with concentric slave cylinder (CSC).

Causes of Clutch Noise?

What can you do when the clutch is making noises or the clutch whistles? There are many different kinds of clutch noises. Whistling or whining from the clutch can be caused e.g. by the release bearing running offcenter, an off-center input shaft, or a defective pilot bearing.

On the other hand, rattling noises may be due to load alterations if clutch disks are furnished with preliminary dampers. These noises do not impair the function or service life of the clutch.

Additional possible causes of the clutch making noises include installation of the wrong parts, or installation of the clutch disk in the wrong position. Clutch noises can also indicate a defect. The following questions are important for workshops: do the clutch noises occur during setting off or during disengaging? Do they occur when the clutch pedal is pressed, while pedaling, or in neutral position? Do noises occur when the clutch is engaged, while declutching, or at idle speed?

The clutch makes noises? The clutch whistles? Always check the following:

• Correct part installed?

• Correct installation position?

• Pilot bearing installed and not worn or defective?

• Condition (wear) of actuating system checked?
