I hope you enjoy this issue, the first we have released for some time, and can see that our focus is all about listening to our customers and bringing you market-relevant solutions. Whilst this has always been the case, I am delighted that we are now back to shouting about everything we have available for you.
So much has happened since our last issue, which was published just after we opened our branch in Dungannon. Since then, we have gone on to open Mallusk in Spring 2021 and Lisburn later the same year. These 5 sites are soon to be joined by our latest opening in Enniskillen, due to open in the coming weeks. In an ever-changing aftermarket, we are committed, as a locally owned business, to enhance our range of stocked products and our customer service to you, with colleagues who you know and can trust.
Whilst we continue to grow, we remain focused in each site on providing a market-leading delivery service. This is backed up by our continual investment in additional and replacement vans. With a fleet of 42 delivery vehicles our branch managers are continually looking to enhance our service so you can minimize the amount of time that vehicles are in your garage.
This investment in stores, vans and people is underpinned by our investment in stock. In recent times we have added additional premium brands to our offering including Petronas, Brembo, Nissens & Exide alongside product line additions such as propshafts, body panels and the WD-40® range of products.
Our Equipment offering has been enhanced also. Offering Diagnostics, Air Conditioning, Battery Charging & Testing, ATF Flushing, and Brake Bleeding solutions through premium brands such as Bosch, Mahle, Hella Gutmann, Telwin and ATE, we continue to look for the tools you require for both standard work and the more complex jobs. I am hopeful that this will be enhanced later in the year also.

Clutch systems are known as a “dry” system and even the smallest leak of oil in the area might damage its capacity to transmit motion from the engine to the gearbox. Also, the metal part of the Guide Tube oil seal, is deputy to ensure the clutch bearing travel, granting it smooth axial movement that avoids many malfunctions related to vibration or travel of the clutch pedal.
Due to this, checking the conditions and changing the Guide Tube oil seal during the clutch maintenance is fundamental in order to avoid further damage. If traces of wear are appearing on the metal part of the Guide Tube, if a leakage appears in the clutch bell, then the Guide Tube oil seal needs to be changed.

The Bosch TPA 300 programming tool has been specially developed for the vehicle-specific configuration of universal sensors for tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS). The tool supports a wide range of universal sensors available on the market. Using wireless transmission, the TPMS data is displayed and checked directly on the colored 2.8 inch display. The quick and easy operation of the programming tool enables uncomplicated sensor programming and the step by step implementation of vehicle relearning procedures. Regular software updates of functions, vehicles and sensor coverage ensure that workshops are up to date and can serve their customers accurately.

LSPI has been rife throughout the industry for years - low speed pre-ignition. It can lead to engine knocking, especially in new car models, thereby causing serious engine damage. But you don’t have to accept this - thanks to the additive specialist LIQUI MOLY.
Modern high-compression engines with direct injection are at an increased risk of premature ignition at low speeds (LSPI - low speed pre-ignition): the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber ignites before the ignition spark is produced. This knocking can result in serious engine damage. It is a phenomenon that is not yet fully understood, but contamination inside the engine definitely has a part to play.
This can be done in two ways: First of all, in the selection of the engine oil. Modern motor oils have adapted formulation to reduce the risk of LSPI. Anyone trying to save money on oil can end up paying much more later in the event of engine damage. The second point is the DFI Cleaner by LIQUI MOLY. This is a special cleaning additive that is poured into the fuel tank. It contains polyetheramine (PEA) as an active ingredient. “Active injectors, pistons and combustion chamber,” explains David Kaiser, Head of Research and Development at Liqui Moly. “When used regularly, it provides permanent protection from new carbon desposits, too.”
These deposits are considered an essential factor in connection with LSPI. The injection systems in modern, direct-injection turbocharged petrol engines are subject to high levels of stress. The injection nozzles extend directly into the combustion chamber, so they are exposed to high temperatures, pressures and the impact of combustion residues. Deposits form at the nozzle outlets within a short time, resulting in the petrol no longer being atomised so finely. This impacts negatively on exhaust gas levels and increases fuel consumption. The deposits can begin to glow due to high temperatures, which can result in engine knocking.
The DFI cleaner can be added at any inspection. It is so effective that it does not need to be added more than every 5,000 kilometres. It is suitable for all cars with a 4-stroke petrol engine, both for direct injection and cars with intake manifold injection.
Liqui Moly has more than 60 years of experience of additives and is the market leader in Germany. “Additives are useful chemical tools,” says David Kaiser. “They can solve a lot of problems more quickly, more easily and more cost-effectively than mechanical attempts.”
Hopefully, most professional technicians are aware of the evolution of the dual mass flywheel (DMF), including hardware adaptations such as the incorporation of a centrifugal pendulum absorber (CPA) into some units. The addition of a CPA, a technology more commonly found in aircraft engines, basically allows the DMF to remove even more drive train vibration than traditional designs.
Schaeffler engineers, at various LuK facilities around the world, have been working with leading vehicle manufacturers to look at other ways in which the CPA could be used to deliver improved comfort and driveability, as well as to help meet fuel consumption and emissions reductions targets. They discovered that a transmission featuring a CPA equipped clutch disc and a solid flywheel provided an ideal damping solution for engines that required less vibration removal performance than offered by a DMF, but more than could be delivered by standard solid flywheel and torsion sprung disc combination.
The new CPA clutch disc and solid flywheel combination works best in smaller engines that deliver under 250Nm of torque, with engines above 250Nm usually requiring a DMF to absorb the extra vibration levels. As the CPA clutch disc is also a more cost-efficient solution, its suitability for specification on smaller engined vehicles is even more pronounced.
Two manufacturers that are benefitting from the technology are Hyundai and Kia, whose 1.6 CRDI engines are originally equipped with a CPA clutch disc. You can also find it in corresponding LuK RepSets for all relevant vehicles.
Note that CPA equipped products cannot be retrofitted. If the component removed is a standard DMF or a clutch disc with torsion dampers, they must be replaced like-for-like. The speed at which engines are expected to run is getting lower and lower, as the slower the engine runs the less fuel it burns and hence the fewer emissions it will produce. At Schaeffler, we have been talking about ‘downspeeding’ during our transmission training sessions for a long time, usually to help explain the reasoning behind the need for such technology as the DMF.
Drivers want to be comfortable at all speeds in all gears, expecting a smooth drive at engine speeds of around 1000 revs in the highest gear, without significantly impacting driveability. However, drive train vibration cannot be avoided at such low engine speeds, and with it comes resonance-induced buzzing and rattling. To remove these unwanted effects, advanced torsional vibration damper systems are needed to ‘soak up’ the vibration – hence the need for a DMF or CPA clutch disc.
Note: When installing a CPA clutch disc, the centrifugal pendulum absorbers may move, and the resulting noises are normal. This is not a defect, but an indication that the technology is working as intended.
