The Sperrins were alive with the sounds and sites of over 80 examples of local retro machinery at the Retro Run in May - from the bapping of Twin Cams, to the burble of Imprezas and even the unmistakable warble of a 5 cylinder Audi or two!

We were absolutely delighted to support this year’s Retro Car Run as it is the brainchild of Jonny Donnelly – a member of our Magherafelt Team. The event started only last year and following that outing’s overwhelming success it returned to raise even more money for local charities this year.

Jonny has found a fantastic way to not only bring local car lovers together, but to channel this passion into something that can do so much good with every penny raised being donated to local charities. All money raised from the Retro Car Run will go towards Lilac Cancer Support & The Olive Branch.

Pumps and racks will live longer if the system is flushed regularly. Systems deteriorate over time. As the system ages, small particles start to break off. Then it snowballs…

Contaminants are suspended in the steering fluid, which then becomes abrasive. The abrasive action then speeds up wear in other parts. Contaminants from rubber pipes and particles of metallic swarf from other areas – such as the impellers of the pump – gradually build up, causing more wear. This, together with fluid oxidisation, which propels the build-up of air and results in further inefficiencies and noise, causes ongoing deterioration until… the system fails.

As all contaminants originate from inside the enclosed circuit, the only way to prolong the life of a pump is to change the fluid regularly, flushing the system thoroughly every time. Because the contamination collects inside the system where you can’t see it, the effects are hardly noticeable until the system fails.

Because of this, there is an ongoing debate as to whether fluid change should be a standard part of the service schedule. And of course, if the system has failed, it’s highly likely that there are raised levels of contaminants in the lines, making it even more important to flush the whole thing out before fitting a new part.

Remember: Essential Preventative Steps

Q: What does ‘virginalising’ a part actually mean?

A: Before you can successfully fit a replacement non VM specific aftermarket EPS part, the original fault codes which rendered this part obsolete in the first place will have to be cleared from the vehicle’s memory. Simply put - Remove any codes stored in the component’s memory so it can be recoded to work within the vehicle it’s being fitted to.

Q: Why does this need to be done and what happens if it’s not?

A: If this isn’t done, the car will automatically transfer the old fault code to the new unit. Nothing will clear this except the fitment of a further brand new unit. Additional unpleasant knock-on effects on the steering ECUs could in the worst cases, immobilise the vehicle.

Q: So how is this done?

A: To do this you need the correct diagnostic equipment; which is expensive and thus requires substantial investment. OR, you source a remanufactured steering rack which has already been ‘virginalised’. This means that the investment falls to the parts manufacturer. Enter Network Auto – we only offer remanufactured EPS racks and pumps where the memory has been completely wiped. This means that the part can be plugged in and – in the vast majority of cases - will automatically learn all the relevant details from the car it is fitted to.

Q: How can I tell if a part I’m selling has been virginalised?

Product Description

Electropneumatic pressure converters are used in large numbers for - Exhaust gas recirculation system (EGR) and - VTG chargers (“Variable Turbo Geometry”, turbochargers with adjustable guiding blades).

Electropneumatic pressure converters operate just like “dimers” in an electric circuit: From a low pressure and atmospheric pressure a mixed pressure (control pressure) is formed in the “EPW” which may be adjusted infinitely through a pneumatic actuator.

Complaint

Within the scope of our complaints processing, the following complaints have reached us:

• The “EPW” is the source of a well audible noise (“squawking”).

• The turbocharger does not perform.

• No exhaust gas is returned i.e.. increase nitrogen oxide levels in the exhaust gas.

Possible Remedy

In most cases the malfunction can be remedied through only a few measures:

• Use connecting hoses having a larger inner diameter.

• Use connecting hoses of lower stiffness.

• Interchange the connections of the connecting hose: Pull a possibly present elbow off from the “OUT” connect on the “EPW” and interchange it with the connection piece at the pneumatic actuator.

Make sure that no hoses are buckled.

Prevent the hoses from coming into contact with hot engine parts. In such cases there is the risk of a fire

The work described above must only be done by qualified personnel.

On-Board diagnostics “OBD” and possible

OBD error codes.

In case of vehicle equipped with OBD systems, the “EPW” units are electrically monitored. Here the following OBD error codes can occur:

Direct monitoring of the “EPW”:

P0033

Waste gate - Malfunction of the electric circuit

P0034 Waste gate - Signal too low

P0035 Waste gate - Signal too high

P0234 Engine charging - Limit value exceeded

P0235 Engine charging - Limit value not attained

Causes

Our analyses indicates that the cause for the malfunction cannot be attributed to a defective “EPW”. In particular in the case of very stiff connecting hose and those having small cross-sections, the column of air trapped in the connecting hoses between actuator and “EPW” may oscillate (see figure 2). In certain cases, a resonance may then occur which will prevent the “EPW” from operating properly.

The corresponding “EPW” is not defective.

Its operation is only impaired through the resonance of the oscillating column of air in the connecting hose.

• This type of malfunction can be detected through a well audible noise (“squawking”).
